FileMaker Server Legacy Discussions

Discussions of Legacy versions of FileMaker Server

  1. Hello all! I am fresh here and will be able to handle all the newbie sarcasm! Bring it on! I have just been hired on to a new company and first things first right? Update FM6 to FM7. I recommend 8.5 and get shot down. I install FM7 Server and FM7 Pro on to the server which is running OS X Server Tiger. I convert all the database's and have everything up and running great. I do a test on my computer and I can do everything that I was able to do in 6 just as easily in 7. Next step, intsall on 'others' computers. Everytime I go to open remote I need to go to 'Favorites' and 'Add' the host (which to me is not a problem, there are only about 20 people that ne…

  4. I am trying to run Filemaker server 5.5 on a PC running Windows Server 2000. I set the application to launch automatically (it doesn’t) and I get the message: “Snap-in failed to initialize Name: Filemaker Server CLSID: {8B1BF5E3-4F4D-11D2-84A9-006008B01131}” on launching Filemaker Server Console for Windows 2000 (FMSCONSL.msc). If it matters, I did install Server on my D: drive due to lack of space on my C: drive. I will be updating to a ver 7 solution ASAP, BTW. Any ideas out there?

Is it just me, or is external server account authentication broken? Works fine under v3, but as soon as I updated to v4 for some reason it no longer works? The event log is silent, as are the various open directory logs.

The dialog box opens up but none of the files on the server e-mac show up in either the local server or the favorite server. It is programed to show up in the local server. 10. Hi, we're creating a FileMaker DB (FM8A) hosted on a FM8Server over a MacOs X Server 10.3, which will accept connections from Windows and MacOsX clients over an extranet link. As in this solution we have to manage images, too, we are trying to avoid the "embedding" and trying to procede as follow: 1 - Accept embedding by a client. 2 - Control existence of the uploaded image on server disk. 3 - Export to the server disk in a predefined directory. 4 - Re-Import the image "by reference". It's all going well locally, but when in remote we can't understand to which directory on server images will be writed to, and, therefore, neither from which director…

  11. I just upgraded my mac 10.4 tiger to 10.4 Server. I used to host FMS 5.5 on the old OS and everything ran great. When I install FMS 5.5 on the new OS, it just keeps trying to start and never does. I also tried just installing FMP 5 and opening the db as a shared file and I can access it with web publishing on the network but can not connect remotely from a client machine running FMP? Any suggestions would be great as I can not find anything on the apple support site relating to FMS not running.

We have FMS 7 installed on Windows Server 2003 for Small Business. The server has been specially configured for security to meet HIPA requirements. It has two NIC cards, one to an internal network and one to the internet. IIS is being used for web serving. I did not set this up and do not have much knowledge of it, being a Mac person. I am able to access the database being hosted directly with FileMaker client without a problem. When accessing through the web I can see the list of databases but when I click to access a database a dialog box appears asking for a user name and password. Unfortunately the accounts in the database are not accepted. I have enabled a gues…

  13. Something is really screwy with our server. First I was having trouble accessing the server with a password that I am 100% certain was correct. Next I installed the FMS8 demo and everything worked great for thirty days. Then I "uninstalled" FMS8 demo and "reinstalled" FMS7. It worked great until I entered a password for the admin utility...then...the password would not work...again! So I removed FMS7 and reinstalled it a third time. This time I left remote admin off and did not enter any password. I went out of town for a few days and when I returned there was a message that said something about The FileMaker Admin utility had changed and it asked me if I wante…

  14. Have searched the archives for this topic, but came up relatively empty, so... I've recently been forced to move our FMS 5.5 from OS X to Win 2003 Std Server. The IS Ops guys "strongly insist" that all servers in the organization get a reboot via automated task on Sunday mornings around 1:00 AM. I have created two automated tasks which stops FMS (FMSERVER STOP) a half hour before the reboot, & starts it again (FMSERVER START) a half hour after the reboot. I'm not really a Windows guy, so the question is: Is this the appropriate way to handle having to deal with the reboot requirement? Or should I add a task that closes the files before the stop? Or, sho…

Yes I'm new. I have just installed FM8.v3. Background: I have two backups. One: I stop the FM services and then backup to CD the FM database. Then I run Veritas Backup Exec to backup the entire HD to tape with the exception of the FM database. What I want to do is to make this easier. First backup FM database incrementally(I guess I could overwrite it completely everyday)using the administrative function on FM server. Then backup the rest of the HD using Backup Exec. There must be a way to script this function, such that would turn off the FM services, then backup the FM database, then start Backup Exec to do the hard drive to tape. It would be nice if t…

I have been having a problem lately and I thought I should ask about it. When I have had to stop my FM server ( running on Mac OS X) to pull files down it often will tell me that it is shutting down, but can take hours before it actually shuts down. I do not have hours to wait, so in the past, I have had to resort to less than friendly means for shutting down the system. I worry as the last time this happened it causes major corruption in one of my databases. Is this a known bug? Is there are work around? Also, when I try to close just one file via the Administration databases it also sits there for hours saying that it is closing. Then I have to shut the…

This week I am deploying on new machines (client) running xp sp2 and when I try to open very simple files it takes too long. The odd thing is that when I change the subnet mask from 255.255.255.0 to 255.255.0.0 I get normal opening speed, but this is causing slowdown on mapped drives and other things. Not sure if anyone has encountered this scenario before but someone may have an idea as to a solution: - we have a number of FMS hosted FMv6 files that get updated every night by an ODBC import from a set of Paradox table from an external app - works fine unless FMS starts a cache flush and tries to pause a file that is in the middle of an ODBC import - if this happens the FMS seizes up with an application error stating that it could not pause the file due to an outstanding database lock - only way out is to reboot the FMS Our FMS is presently set to flush cache every 40 minutes. It makes sense that it might encounter the above scenario from time to time. S…

Hi, we have a client running FMS 5.5, hosting 125 multi-user files. There has never been a problem hosting these files. The files are opened using an "OPENER" file scripted to properly open the files through the Host dialog box. When the files open to the host dialog box, all the files just show up in the window. They have never had to "specify host". However recently they had to reboot the server where FMS is installed and now none of the files are showing in the Host dialog box. I had them "specify host" and enter the server address and check the box to permanently add the address. And now they must always “specify host”. My question is why aren’t the files s…

We run server 5.0+ with 50 users throughout our plant. It has been very solid and reliable. Occassionaly (a few times a year) due to network traffic or someone has plugged into the network with a incompatable IP address, the FM applications loose the server's db list broadcast. All of our users have the specific server's IP address in their host listing, but the only way I can require the menu broadcast is to re-boot the server (and then all is well). This of course is not a practical thing to do in a 24/6 operation. Is there another way to refresh the server (W2K)(or from the server software) that the menu broadcast can be re-established? Thanks

Evidently I downloaded the FM8Server software to my computer from the CD as I was downloading the Administrator module/software. I don't know how I did this. If I actually go to the layout of the record(s) it is supposed to be displaying and create a new record or duplicate one that exists, suddenly all the records that should have been contained within appear, including the newly created record. Problem: if I log into the terminal server with admin rights, FileMaker file opening and closing takes very long, lots of squiggly line and hourglass. Same results across all of my apps. FileMaker priveleges have no impact. Anyone know what's up with this?

This then adversely affects calc fields in the other two tables that reference the child table. This only happens when 3 or more users are working on the file at the same time. We have FMS7 running in Mac OS X which is set to backup every 20 minutes. I'm referring to the automated function within FMS7. We then run an Apple Automater script to send a copy of our backup once a day to our Linux machine which masquerades as a Win2K server. This has worked fine for many months until a couple of weeks ago when the internal backup function stopped working. The little button "enabled" would uncheck itself after running once manually. Then after two days of going crazy with this, suddenly it started working again and has done so since... perhaps 10 days now. Has anyone seen this? If so, have you fixed it? How? JG

Howdy - I had external authentication set up and working great between FMS (running on 10.4.5) and the Windows Active Directory Domain (running on Win2K3 Server). At least, it was running great up until we had a power outage on Friday... now external auth. seems to be broken. Users can still log in to files on FMS with FileMaker accounts which are defined inside the files. It's only the external authentication that quit working. I have checked the event log, and it shows that when the server came back up, FMS performed a consistency check on all the files, since they hadn't been properly shut down. All reported being OK. Hi, I am running our database on FM8 (just migrated last month). There are 35 files left after integrating the smaller tables into other files. My users are getting error mesages when editing records saying that the record is already being used/edited and they can't change anything. This happens when only one user is online, so it is not related to other users actually being in the same record. My guess is that it is related to the relations between files (that are still open in the background). Does anyone know how t solve this? Thank you for your time... I do not need to register my server with the directory or enter the distinguished name, or any of that nonsense. Is that accurate? All I need is to have the FMSA registered in tyhe domain I want to use and then create groups in that domain and add users I want to access via those groups then define the access of those groups in each individual FM file. Does that sound right? I think I've got the grasp of it all, but here are my questions. Do the users have to be in the Users OU for this to work? How about th…

According to Filemaker in their "FM Server Best Practices" document, the Database Cache should (as a starting point) be set to 5% of the total size of databases hosted.
