Hello all. I have a line items portal, and I would like to be able to give a total price of all items in the portal on a per-item basis. It's easy enough to total up all the extended costs to show a Unifid total, but I would like to show a total for just "ICE" and a total for just "SHOVELS" and so on, all on the same layout. How could I go about doing this?

I am not good at writing scripts and I need help. I have 3 tables. The first is Inventory which contains vehicle description and ID No. The second is MileageFuel Use. The fields are Vehicle ID No., Date, End Mileage, Destination, Purpose, Fuel Type, Gallons, and Cost. The third table is MileageFuel Report. It is set up as a portal which has the related fields from MileageFuel Use. The relationship is based on Vehicle ID. I want to be able to show the records from the MileageFule Use table for a specific time period (7/1/10 ...7/31/10) for a specific vehicle. I've been chugging along merrily on a solution to track payments to our accounting department, but I seem to have hit a wall. Hopefully it's not a dead end! We receive payments from customers and need to track the multiple line items that a single payment can cover so that the money gets distributed to the correct accounts. I've got a table that contains information about the receivable (check #, total amount, date received, payer, etc.) Another table contains the accounts with their account numbers and descriptions. Hi there, I have been using Filemaker for a few weeks now and am still blown away by how powerful the system is and what one can achieve. I have been reading so many posts here to get up to speed but can't seem to find the answer to my current query - Intro - We deal in shoes, and have a shoe database and another database that has all the components that make up the shoes (laces, soles, inners, etc...). Hi folks, My patient consultation notes table is set to display as a portal on the patient's main information layout (different file). One of the fields in the consult notes contains an image. I want to be able to click on that image in the portal so that it can be viewed as a larger object so I can see the detail of the image (and then be able to close that new window to return back to the patient info screen). Hi! I'm trying to develop a solution that will track work productivity. Our company tracks a certain fixed set of activities, which each employee must account for throughout the work day. Currently, when the activity has been completed, the employee makes a tally mark on a written shift report. At the end of the quarter, our supervisor counts the tallies for each activity and reports to headquarters. This is a total pain! Hence, the FMP solution... Hi all, I'm using portal to show data from related table "Tasks". One of field in task table is taken/related from another table "Contacts". How to make contact field in portal always up to date when data in contact table was changed. I was thinking use contact id instead contact name but I want to visualy operate with name and no id number. My goal is to have the field color (company) fill in a different color based on the value. I have a customer database I have a job database and I have a calendar view database of the jobs using portals. When the job appears in the calendar view, I want each customer to have it's own fill color so that you can identify the company by color as well as name. Although each portal is it's own relation based on day of week. I have the basic idea of a transparent field and using a global container, but the portal is throwing me. Thank you

Hi, I'm writing a script to retrieve the record in a portal with the most recent date with it. I have sorted the portal in the layout with the correct order, but just don't know how to retrieve this related record.. I have a household table which relates to a comment table. So in the household layout, I have a portal to contain all the related comments, and they are sorted with most recent first. Now how can I retrieve the date of that most recent comment? Do I need to sort the records in the portal? If yes, how? Please advice. Thank you!

I have a portal with a number of related records. One of the fields in the portal is a calculated text field which shows the name of any user currently using that record, if any. If no user is using that record, the field is empty. I would like to sort this portal so that all the records which are in use by users are listed at the top of the portal in ascending order (A, B, C...). However, when I sort the portal in this way, FileMaker considers the empty records to come before those with values in them, and thus all those records appear at the bottom. So, first time posting, hope this is the correct format. Here's the problem I'm running into. I've got a members table that that has the fields member ID, Member Name. I've got a events table with the fields event ID, Event Name I've got a registration table with the fields registration ID, Member ID, Event ID Basically what the Registration Table does is register a member for an event via a pull-down menu that pulls data from value lists created from the Member Name and Event Name. I have made this timesheet for recording my work hours. I made a portal and relationship via the date of the time sheet. When I create a record in the portal, it makes a mirror duplicate of the record in the master. So when I create "1" record, and go to add the job codes in the portal, it makes another record in the main time sheet, not too difficult to fix, however I am drawing a blank on what I am doing wrong. Maybe I am missing something but I have not gotten the following to work. I have a layout with two portals each with 4 columns. I would like to navigate within the portal from column to column on the first row then move to the second portal and do the same. The issue is that with tab order, it will not leave the initial portal after the last column but just goes to the second row.

Hi everyone, This is another general question that I got stuck with.. I have been using portals in my layouts, and I noticed that the fields defined in the portals are not field contained in the related table where the portal is placed, as portals are just field holders. Am I right? I just wonder if I can somehow make those fields be part of the table, as I need to retrieve the content of those portal fields in the layout where the portal is placed. I have a product database with two tables, "products" and "productCategories". The productCategories table is setup as a portal in my products database. I have a found set in my products database (let's call the found set "Posters"). I want to assign all of the records in the found set to two different productCategories, "Movie Posters" and "Science Fiction". I've been trying to figure out a solution for this and have gone down this path, although I'm not sure if there's a simpler solution. Essentially, I'm creating a job application. There are radial selections for "Have you been convicted of a Felony?" and "Are you related to anyone who works for the company?" These are Yes/No fields and are stored in the APPLICATION table. The problem is that I want to "pop-up" explanation fields only in cases where the answer is yes. The idea is that for each sentence that I analyze, I add the root verb (i.e. walk instead of walks or walked) of that sentence, which are stored in another table ("Verbs"). Hi everyone, I have created a portal in the HouseHold layout to contain the household's cultural information (Asian, American etc) This info comes from each baby's record. Since each baby record contains cultural information, household with more than one kid would have duplicate cultural information (each sibling would have the same cultural info) So in my portal, the same cultural info would show up twice or more depending on the siblings' number. Is there a way to get rid of the duplicates in the portal? Is scriping the only way? I have a feeling that there should be a better way to develop this portal. Please advice. Thank you!

Seems to me that portals are just extracting the data from related tables, and it does not keep the data input format. I have a database with two related tables, Processing Systems and Processing Records. My relationship is based off of the processing record status (Complete or Active) and the machine that it is tied to which allows me to determine which system is available. Currently everything is displayed in a nice list with a one row portal view, which works well for an available system view but not for reporting. Hi all, I have several tables related to each other (tblBabies, tblHouseholds, tblStudies, tblLanguages etc) I also created portals about the babies info in the tblHouseholds. Problems occured when I tried to create new records of households with babies' information in the web version after I published the database. In the developer's end, I set the baby ID to be generated automatically, but it is not doing it in the web end. Hi, I have a fairly simple database with 4 tables - > Customers > Contacts > Sites > Survey_Results All of these are related by idCustomer. In order to keep things simple for users I'd like to keep all information on a single layout (Customers). Hello, I want to create a portal that has a start date field and an end date field which will constrain the portal data. I'm not sure where to start. How does Filemaker handle dates; for example, is 1/1/2001 lesser or greater in value than 12/1/2009? When I enter a date range into the date fields, I want the portal to automatically update, so I imagine that I need to do this with my portal relationship. The Details: - We have multiple Contract Files, each with its own associated Payments File. Leftover archetecture from Version 6. - We have a Payments List Layout, in each Contract File. I have 2 portals on a layout that are displayed across multiple users. These two portals represent the status of a particular item, one portal represents unapproved and the other represented denied. What is the best way to ensure that if a user sitting on the layout is always seeing up-to-date information? I can script a refresh window script to refresh every 5 seconds or so, but that seems a little inefficient. Thoughts?

This seems like the easiest thing in the world to do, but for some reason I am unable to script a sort of a set of related records via a portal row. What I want to do is have a portal that, upon record creation, displays the order that the records are created in. After the user closes the window, any subsequent time that they go into the layout to view the child records I want a script to sort the records contained in a portal by name. Greetings, I'm trying to beef up my current solution and can't seem to figure a good way to do it. currently I've got a Database hosted on server advanced where people access it through IWP. I have a results layout with a self-join relationship that shows the results of any search in that portal. The user then just clicks on the portal and it takes them to a details page for that record. This works great for searches but when I want the user to see all the records (5000+) it takes such a drain on the server to populate the entire list that it takes for ever and most people will want to view all when they first get in. Can portal flash be prevented when flipping from record to record? I have built a self relation portal that I'm calling overview. This relationship basically displays any records without a close date, also has some on the fly portal filters such as status, lead artist, etc... The filters are global, records displayed in the overview portal are the same for ea. record. So when you flip from one record to the next, there is no reason for the portal to check it's self. But currently when you flip to next record, the portal clears it's self, then re populates the records, so this creates an annoying flash! Is there no solution to this? Please help. THANK Y…

I can't seem to get it. I have 2 tables, one is the invoice header date, invoice number name & address then I have subtotal and taxes. Hi there, There is something I can't pin point with my portal. I have 2 dbs. The first one holds a portal. The second one is used for logs. Every time someone logins, a new log is created but no logs are displayed in the portal. When I go back to the first db where the portal is located, then the logs are displayed. Hi, I am wondering if there is a way to Limit how many records can be created in a portal. For example... I am recreating a form in FMP.. I wanted to use a Giant Portal, that has all of the different Fields being used. The catch is, I only want to allow at max, 12 rows of data per 1 Parent Record. What usually happens is the portal extends to allow more records, I don't want that to happen. I want it to stop at 12. I am trying to make it fit perfectly on a sheet... and I don't want to allow anything over 12... Somewhere along the line I got the impression that it's a "Best Practice" (or at least a *better* practice) to build a little Child-Record-Creator system where the user onters values for a new child record in little global fields and then scripting a button to go and create the record, rather than simply putting browsable fields in a portal to the Child table and allowing users to create records by simply entering data on the next line in that portal. What I can't recall is *why*. I have a situation where the order of portal rows on a given parent record is important, but I'm having problems retaining information about their order in related tables. I want to set up an interface that works like a browser shopping cart, where one (main) image is shown with a row of smaller images representing different colors of the main image. I want the main image to change as the user selects a smaller image. Currently I have a layout based on a Style table with the image displayed thru a relationship based on style num. I have a few portals that are set up with a scripted sorting solution based on Excelisys's Extreme Portal Sort. This solution has worked very well for my needs. But my problem is that when a change is made to a field that the portal is being sorted by, quite often the portal resorts behind the scenes but the view does not seem to refresh. The result is the data being viewed is not lined up with the actual data. So when you make a change to a row you are looking at unsorted it actually changes the row that is really there after the sort. I have a number of portals, each with a button in the portal row linked directly to the DeletePortalRow command. Each of these these portals represent the Session Details (in a child table) for a particular client (registered in the Master table). All the DeletePortalRow buttons work fine (they delete only the portal row that the button is clicked in) except in one particular portal... When I click on the DeletePortalRow button - it deletes EVERY record (related or not) from the child (sessions) table. A scripted DeletePortalRow behaves in exactly the same manner. I have an IWP-hosted database that keep generating the error message "Portal Related Record Contents Have Been Modified" when there are two users working simultaneously. They are both verifying the contents of records displayed in a portal. The individual records have a user account name field and the TO relationship behind the portal requires this field to equal the users account name, so each user only sees records they are supposed to check and verify. Ugh -- maddening little detail I can't pin down. I made a solution a while ago with a little interface for creating child records from the parent context. A portal displays the current child records so that the user sees what's already been catalogued. Works fine. When there are no child records, the portal displays a first row with blank fields, and the little "Goto and "Delete" buttons I put into the portal. I've been searching through various portal sorting techniques. Seems most people are big advocates of using "Tabs" these days for portal sorting. What's the next most common and easiest to implement. I've found such a variety that my heads starting to spin from all the options.

I have a portal on a layout which is filtered by a drop-down list immediately above it, yet, when filtered, displays multiples of the same record. The filtering menu appears to do SOMETHING, as selecting an option alters the portal. Currently the portal is displaying the appropriate amount of records; the problem is that the portal only ever displays one record, and instead of displaying the appropriate records, displays the same record repeatedly. Please refer to the attachment. After the portal record is duped I'd like the focus to go to the newly duped record. The problem is, with the Go to Portal Row:Last script step the focus indeed goes to the last (and blank) portal row instead of the next-to-last one which has the newly duped record. I'm trying to produce a Filemaker version of a home budget program with similar functions of Quicken. I started out with Filemaker's "Check Tracker" template, and added additional features. I'm having some trouble implementing the "Split Transaction" feature. This feature allows a record to have sub records. As an example, if the record was a credit card bill, the split transaction allows typing in all the individual purchases made by that credit card for that particular bill. I could create a relational database file for each split, but that seems like alot of files to keep track of as the database grows. Is there another way to do this? Thanks, Ron K

Is there a basic way to count the number of records in a portal? But, I don't want the value in the portal. I want it on the layout that the portal is on. I have a portal relating account records to clients. Using information on this forum I figured out how to get the conditional formatting I want -- if there are more than 5 records in the portal of the same account type the back ground color is changed. What I'd like to do is have the number of records in the portal on the layout. Why? I want to perform finds based on that value. Thanks in advance. Christopher

I've looked at all similar posts, but answers my variation of this problem. I have a simple contact database with 2 tables: Contacts and phone_numbers. These are joined by contact ID. The phone numbers appear in the contact layout within a portal that contains two fields: type & number (e.g. "Work Phone" & "555-1234"). I've set the field behavior to allow data entry in find mode, but when I try a find of "Work Phone" in the type field in the portal, it says "No records match this find criteria". Whenever I enter find mode, the content of portals disappear, or there is a box from which you could perform a find. I'd like a portal to show record content while in find mode so I can script it and perform scripted finds by clicking the portal content. Is this possible? I know I could do this by creating a value list and creating a checkbox set instead, but unfortunately I need to be able to control the sorting better than the value list allows.

Is there a way to do a find for all records that contain an empty filtered portal? The portal is being filtered using Filemaker 11's new portal filter feature. Or am I going to have to create a filtered relationship in the relationships graph and then do an isempty search? It's a complex filter so I would really prefer not having to do it in relationship graph. Thanks!

I copied a script to remove a portal row but it removes ALL of the entries for the match and deletes them from the parent file. I have checked and there are no permissions to either create or delete records between the tables upon which the relationships are based (either way). Any ideas?

Hello, this might be something simple but I haven't been able to figure it for the past 3 hours. I have one dbase.fp7 with over 1500 records. I perform a search and find for certain records and let's say the search gave me 7 records (field name = CUSTOMER_NAME). I now want to import these 7 records into accounting.fp7. accounting.fp7 contains a portal with 7 rows that is supposed to show only the 7 imported records. When I import the 7 records and look at the portal, I see the same database record (CUSTOMER NAME) in each row of the portal and not the 7 different names of my customers. I have a database that is for a yearly convention. I have a table for the name and the amount of the of each session offered. I made a layout with a portal in order to open and choose which session will be attended. There can be up to 7 choices for the conference. Hi. in FM 11 I have a simple portal with a portal filter. Example: Clients and Orders. Depending on the value in 3 global fields, only subsets of all available Orders are shown in the portal for a client. Imagine a client has 12 Orders listed. I apply my portal filter to only show the ones from this year for example. And now only three Orders are shown in the portal. I am having issues creating a filtered portal on a users home screen. I am trying to filter a portal based upon a global number field on the home screen and a calculated number field in the portal record. I am filtering based upon two fields. The first is my primary field, which displays all records with a status of "Pending" and "In Progress". I have this field set to a check box and can actively filter between the two different statuses. Hello! Is there a possibility to show/hide portal rows? I have a table in my database for offers, which operate with data from another table through the portal. And I have the invoices file, where the same portal is placed. No problems so far. But, in invoices file I must hide some lines in portal. The deletion is not allowed, because the offer should stay untouched. Is there a way to do this?

I'm working on a database for field organizers to use in the Initiative-1068 Marijuana Legalization campaign in Washington State, USA. Petitions are individually (uniquely) numbered. The petitions are then checked out by the field organizers to volunteers. Volunteers collect signatures and then return the petitions to the field organizers who check them in before sending them in to campaign central. I'm pretty new at this stuff but have a layout for Companys (Companys table) with a portal for contact names (People table) related thru a CompanyName field in each table. Problem is, in a company with multiple contact names, only the first name (first when viewing People in Table View) shows up in the portal. I guess there is no answer to this, but it could be a good suggestion for filemaker team... Is there a way to make horizontal portals? I have to display a grid showing pre-scheduled sessions displaying time values. Three lines, one for today, one for the day before and one for the next day. Clicking on a timefield should bring up an appointments dialog. I actually made it working. there are three series of twelve horizontally aligned different portals. Here's the problem... I have a 'jobbing database' and I have created a separate new 'time database' - the link relationship is the Job_No field. Hi, I have a related table called Po lines. What happens, is that customers place orders for goods not released yet ( we are selling CD's; DVD's-etc). We put all these orders in this table, then when we have enough orders for a particular supplier, we create a purchase order. However, in the PO lines table, you can have 6 different customers ordering the same product, for differing quantities. At present I create a Po and assign the Po number to all the records chosen in the PO lines table. Hello, I'm a beginner user having a problem with calculating data in a portal based on a date field. The items I am working with are: Invoice (the portal table name) Payment Date (Date field) Payment Amount (Number field) I'm a guitar teacher and I would like to create a report that displays income sorted by year and then month. As many of you know, FM11 solves the flicker problems that have plagued Windows users -- with ONE GLARING EXCEPTION. Portals flash like crazy whenever there is any background color or graphic involved. It is a devastating effect for the user. To clearly test and demonstrate the effects in a variety of portal/layout combinations, I built the attached example file. Of all 16 variations it includes, only white on white lessens the effect. I'm using comment's dwindling value list (in FMP 8.0), which uses the ValueListItems function and a script to refresh window [flush cached join results], in a portal. It functions perfectly except for one thing. If I'm creating a new record in the last portal row and enter information and then use this script (which is fired by button attached to the field being entered) the other information, the entire row or record in fact, disappears and I'm now selecting a value in a second new record. Hi all, I currently have a structure for my employees that allows them to punch in and out, multiple times a day. This table is called Employees InOut, now I'm trying to filter this portal by month (2 for February), this works fine, however, it shows: 02/01/2010 02/01/2010 02/01/2010 02/02/2010 Meaning some dates are showing multiple times (because they punched in multiple times that day). Good morning, everyone. I have a question the about the auto complete feature of Filemaker 9 Advanced. Is there any way possible to have the auto complete feature work with a drop down list that is tied to a value list and be able to click on the arrow and choose from a list of items. I imported an application from FM4 to FM10. Table A and table B connected with an Id. Layout of table A with a portal where table B records are shown. HI there! I have a database with related tables which are all shown in a layout using portals placed in separate tabs. What I need to do is to be able to print a total concise report of the current record, but showing all the information from all the individual portals (relate records) which will be shown as separate sections of the report. The number of related records in each portal is not constant and therefore need something like sliding-and-auto-reducing for all portals. One of the problems also is that two of the related tables have around 100 fields each... I don't seem to have any idea for all of this. Does anyone?

In a student database, I have created a portal which details the student's enrolment. Example: Subject Year Assessment Institution Problem 1 I've created a new layout letter to advise the student of their enrolment details. However, if a student is enrolled in more than one subject, only the first subject in the portal appears on the letter. The 2nd and 3rd subjects in the portal do not appear on the letter. How do I resolve this? Problem 2 I want to create a report in a new layout which indicates a subject and lists all students enrolled in this subject. How do I do this based on the portal above?

How do I show a specific related record, not just the first matching one, in a non-portal field? I have a table Class with the Student_ID as a key. Every Student_ID appears in multiple records (once for history, math, biology, etc.). In a related table Phone, I want to say, "Show me the phone number only for students who are taking history." Hello I have a strange problem. I created a portal and use Kieran MacMillan's FastCreate to enter the data. It goes well except for the first portal entry. It goes like this: I create a new record. Fill the client's name (or any other field). Then I go directly to the portal entry field and make a selection in the value list (or any other entry field, value list or not ). When clicking outside the entry field to commit it. The datas disappear. In my line items, the datas are there but not the client id (so it seams the relation doesn't work). I want to use a portal to display I guess what you'd call two "instances" of one field. Table "Glossary" has only two fields: "GlosId" and "Word." Ok I have a simple checkbox on each portal record. It allows the user to multiselect items. It is tied to a number field and the checkbox set is attached to a lookup list that has a single value of "1" in it. My plan is if it is checked then 1 else nothing. Hi. I have a document storage solution that shows in a portal all documents pertaining to a customer. Some are letters in, some letters out some product images etc. The solution works fine. In one layout, I want to limit the records in the portal to a particular document type. Doing a search (either scripted or manually) on the document type field (within the portal) and the customer ID (outside the portal) fails to show just the desired documents within the portal.
