Oh what a disapointment that the Add Account script step allows you to supply calculated account name and password but not the privilege set This is particularly important to me as I have 45 files that originally used common grouped passwords (because you could not maintain passwords in a hosted system). Now, in FM8, I'm going to bring back individual account/passwords - but I have 42 users! therefore 1890 accounts to create! Bummer!

Is there a way to encrypt a database on the fly as well as have a password? I am in FMP 6 though. thanks

Hi, We are unable to connect to our Filemaker Web Publishing administration console. It seems that the username and/or the password have been lost. But there is good chance the problem is with the username. There is a way to find which username have been used when the installation of the service was done? If the problem is with the password I suppose the solution is to reinstall the service... Thanks

Hi New to the forum and very new to FM7. As most people here, I was asked to solve a problem but stuck Our HR group uses the Filemaker Recruiter DB and have used the sharing option for a while, without problems, with the DB stored on a shared network drive(Win2000 server)...and I now know that this is not great to do. The issue is that all of a sudden, if a new host opens the file, and the other users use the open remote function, they get a message stating that the account and password they entered can not open the file. However, if they are the host and enter in the same username/password, they have no issues. I checked that sharing was on and everyt…

I have a layout designed that takes an operator in to a related only record. There is certain information that the user must input before moving on. I can lock a record by validating the field as "not empty" thus preventing the user to go to any layout, perform any script or even close the database. This is fine.. However, it is very annoying as whenever the user clicks into space or out of a field the validation message pops up. Basically all I want to do is stop the database being closed before the record has been completed by one way or another - The way that I have allowed. I am using a magnetic card reader reading cards encoded with an 11 digit serial number followed by a carriage return. When swiping cards into a password or single line text field, the carriage return has the effect of trying to post the data but returns an error 4 message. If I change the field to a multiline text field it reads the data into the field and I can then submit the data manually. Any ideas why the carriage return doesnt post properly?

When you have a field set to display a drop down list and you have the 'Include Edit...' option checked does this bypass all security for the value list? It seems to for me. I have a privilige set where the overall setting is 'All View Only' for all of the value lists yet members of that privilige set can actually create and edit 'the values' contained in the lists. Hi I'm moved to a new Job so here at my new job there's File Maker Pro 8.x but in my old job there was a 5.X version. When I tried to open a file (made in version 5.x at my old job) it asks for a user and password but when I created it only asked me for a password not a user, so I don't know what user it was and only opens it with guest access and I can't modify the layout. Does anyone can give me a clue about this? THANKS

I'm new to FileMaker. My mentor is out today. I have an existing database which I added two new users to yesterday. Today when they try to access FM, they get the following error: Open FDIMS.fp7 could not be opened. Permission Denied. They are on FileMaker 7.0v3. I have verified that they have the appropriate access and groups in active directory. They are set up as users in FM with the same login ID as their network. Our environment usually syncs and does not require a user to log into FM - just uses their active directory permissions. Please help! Thank you!

Greetings Fellow FileMakers - I want to create a file that opens other files, supplying the necessary user names and pw's automatically. It keeps others who are not the current Get(UserName) from getting in, but allows a one touch opening of all the files. What is the best way to do this? Thanks, Royce

New to the forum and I have a question. I am setting up a database, and would like to have a user be able to completely create a new record, but also be able to edit one field in all other records (but only that field, not allowed to edit any other field in records they did not create during their login). I can get each of these things independently, but can't seem to be able to get a user that has both restraints. How do I do this? (If its possible) I tried searching this forum but didn't find it, and the help files don't have it either. Thanks for any help!

Want users to be able to delete current records or all found records, but no need to ever have access to delete all records. Did know if there was a way to calc the access under limited delete?

I am working on a db now in fmp8. It has a few users that have used it forever (since fmp4?) without login, but now we have a few new staff members who will access the db, and I am worried that they will inadvertently do things they shouldn't. Mostly I'd like to protect them from deleting or changing things they don't know how to handle yet. I am a manager of a research laboratory. I inherited a Filemaker database (Filemaker 7, Mac OS X) that the lab uses for ordering equipment and supplies. I can use the database as is, but I would like to modify it. It seems that the first step is to get it into the "Layout" mode, but this is grayed out. Also the "Define" option is grayed out under the File menu. I am a complete novice when it comes to Filemaker. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Hello, I have a table in a database that contains, user name, passwrod, and priveledge set. How can I have Filemaker use this, so I do not have to input all 400+ users manually?

I just created a new file and somehow I locked myself out with an unknown password - totally unintentional. I have FM 8.5 I have tried "File --> File Options --> Log in Using "Admin" but I am not alllowed that option. Since this is a personal verison of FM, I assume I am my own administrator. How do I access that part of FM that will allow me to undo whatever password is there and open my file. Help! Appreciated: Nevada Traveler

How to disconnect a user from a small network (peer to peer network) when idle for more than 10 or 15 mnts. There is an option in Other Privileges that says " Disconnect user from FM server when idle"; we don't have FMS? Thanks for any suggestion

Just my file. Created in FM 5.5, converted in FM7 & now use 8.5 Advanced. Never had a PW for access & now I can't get rid of the "Admin" listing. Just want my simple database to open with no restrictions. Try to change the pass when I never created one for the original file created in 1996 wonks out. How do I get rid of ALL restrictions. No privacy needed.

I have setup a whole bunch of scripts, picture changers mostly, which depend on the Setfield command to work. However, when I create the Runtime, I keep getting Your access privileges will not allow this action -- ruining all the scripts. What am I doing wrong?

Didn't think this was possible: Created a database and decided to set up logins with various priviledges. I left the Admin privledges as is and just added a password. No matter how I log in, I can't modify anything - all accounts including Admin act as read only in any view including Layout. Help! Hi Chaps I have a live FMPro 8 Database hosted by a server. To date access to the primary file has been automatic via a non passworded "demo" account. I have now set up users with various levels of access privaledges that I now want to start using. However, I would like to create a startup/splash screen for these users that contains some database information such as a company logo and address but also contain a "User" and "Password" field that on a button press uses a script to authenticate the user and log them into the database proper. Hi, I am required to create an advanced customized login screen. I need to create a login screen similar to we see on mailing sites like yahoo or gmail etc. User will enter login-id and password and if authorised then he/she will be directed to *.fp7 application. I am working on FM Pro 8.5 and this application is designed for both Windows and MAC(accessible thru FM & IWP). Hello Everyone. I have a question that I haven't seen answered, quite, in any of these posts, maybe because it's so basic. . . How secure is my FileMaker file if I assign a hard/impossible to guess user name and password? Am I safe walking around with that file on my laptop? Or should I always place the file on my PGP encrypted partition? I don't need to allow anyone else access to my file: I just want to be able to use it myself, and carry it on my laptop without needing to worry about what will happen if, God forbid, my laptop is stolen or lost. Hello all, I have a database that has a data-entry-only account that is used for submitting web forms using CWP. No problems here. Users can freely browse to this web page and submit a form (for a job posting), and there is no need for a username/password. Part of the data that gets submitted from this form turns into a job listing that only certain users can look at. What this means is that when the data is submitted, anyone (a company) can do it, but when a user (a job seeker) wants to view the same data, they need a username and password. Hi all, I am just finishing up a system that I upgraded from v6 to v8. I am testing logins right now. When I login with a non-admin account, the database goes into kiosk mode. BUT I never ran developer tools on it and never activated kiosk mode! As a test, I took the original v6 file and updated it to v8. This seems to cause the problem. This is a major bug! If I create a v8 file from scratch, this problem does not occur. Any ideas?

I need to allow users access to a sub-set of my Patients-database based on the Status-field: status="active", any records with status="inactive" should be skipped. I attempted to implement this with Priviledge sets and it works to a fashion, i.e. the user has no access to the records with status="inactive", but those inactive records still show up in all the reports and layouts with field-contents as "no access". How can I implement this so that it acts like a Find, making the records with status=Inactive totally invisible? Thanks, Jos.

Who Am I Trying to Protect? Or more accurately what am i tring to protect and from who is a question spinning around my head at the moment. Am i correct in thinking there is no way to script the appearance of the Extended Privileges window?

OK i am 1/2 way through recreating a file that i accidentally removed full access from then lost the original file.... Now i have a second question relating to security: When opening a file i have specified to run the "OnOpen" script i created. The first entry in the script is Allow User Abort OFF followed by trap error messages. As I have configured the file to run the script at open, is this a sure thing? Or is there some way that a user can circumvent my "OnOpen" script so that they launch the file (with some magic key combination or otherwise) which would cause the script to not execute on launch? I have a database with accounts/passwords configured. This includes layouts showing pictures from another file. If user account is not created in picture file (and most are not), they are asked to enter account details when viewing appropriate layout. I want to put my 100 or so accounts from one file into the other quickly to avoid this double authentication problem. Or is there an alternative? Thanks.

I have a database with many tables. I need certain users who can amend layouts etc within specific tables only (this works fine). I also need these users to be able to create fields within the specific tables that they have access to. Right now, it seesm that only users with full admin rights can create fields. We've been running FM Server on a windows server for awhile now. We've got un's and pw's setup that give appropriate access, be it read only, write, or full access, etc. We simply log into FM with a username and we get those permissions...like it should be. Here's the deal. I want any user to be able to fill out a form with information for a new project. I do not, however, want that new information to be incorporated as a record into my project table until it is accepted by one master user. Similarly, I don't want all users to be able to modify records without the notification of the same master user. Ideally I would have a two forms, one for new records and one for record updates, which could be submitted to the master user for accenptance. Guys, Need some advice. I'm about to look into converting an access school/pupil academic system into a FileMaker based system. One of the things I need to consider is making sure the network infrastructure and computer systems security is adequote to protect data. Within FileMaker, I can take out the Export script command, so no user can export data from files but what other things can you guys think of that I can do to help keep data on a network secure from prying eyes. Hi does anyone have a template or sample file to an account management interface? I want to use the native Filemaker account setup, however, I do not want the accounts admin to always go to the menu and select 'Define Accounts & Privileges'. I know I can use scripts to allow the accounts admin to create, delete, and modify the priv set for users but I wanted to see if there was an eloquent solution out there. I have Filemaker Mobile 8. I couldn't sync with my PDA so I started to mess with users. Now I never entered a password yet when I try to open the database it's asking for a password. I'm desperate. It's a very important file. what did I do and how do I correct the problem

I have a script that requires a supervisor to check and pass a record. The start of the script asks the supervisor to log in. If the log in fails, the user will be asked to re-log in. press comtine or press cancel. If the user press's "continue" the script will go ahead and finish where as I do not want this. As there are multiple supervisors, and multiple scripts the same, it is very difficult to account conditions for all supervisor log in names. Is there any way I can stop the user pressing "continue" This is more of a filmaker function that I cannot control. The start of the script has failed but the user can still continue it. How can I stop this??

I had an older file which I used to have privileges on, but I now no longer need to protect. So I removed all but the guest user from the Define Accounts and Privilege dialog, making sure Guest access was set to Full. But the validation dialog still comes up every time I open the file, and it has to be manually set to Guest before it will open. How do I get rid of this dialog? This is FMP 703. i am working on a filemaker 8 database and i wish to be able to prevent edits to a record if the record is marked "complete". i don't wish to lock all records in the database, just the complete ones. i was hoping i don't have to do a check on each field. it would be great if certain access levels had the ability to alter 'complete' records as well. my searches for 'lock records' have not yeilded anything pertaining to what i wish to do. thanks!

I have a database called clients.fmp i have 3 fields Name: email: valid until: I have it published with filemaker server, so i am able to ac0cess it from anywhere. My question is.. Is it possible to let my clients see their specific page? for example, a log in that if they insert the name and email correctly, it lets them see their page including the "valid until field" .. I want to limit users' editing privileges for all defined fields except one memo field which allows users to add notes. I tried it to do it from Access Privileges, but the field is still not modifiable. I have set Developer and User password to limit the access priviliges. Anyone can help me? Thanks in advance.

Hi, I'm running a multi-file for multi-user database with Server 8.0v3 on OSX. My users keep clicking the close button (x) which causes relationships to be lost, with all nasties that result from this. Is there a way to remove these buttons from the window? I'm talking about the red/yellow/green balls in the top left of the mac windows.

Hi oh ye gurus. In FM6, I had a handydandy little feature which prevented records from being accidentally modified. A record was "locked" (a field called locked was set to "yes" when the record was locked), and while that field was set to "yes" the record could not be edited. If someone wanted to edit the record he would first explicitly haveto unlock the record by clicking an unlock button (field is now set to "no") and now you could edit it. After the edit the user must again explicitly press a button to lock the record. It is very handy to avoid accidental modifications of fields if someone for example spills his beer all over the keyboard. …

Hi all, I am just starting to address some security issues in my database. In the past I have scripted everything by hand, but I would like to start using Accounts/Privileges. So I have a User account, that limits the ability for end users to only edit there own records. If a user trys to modify a field belonging to a record that they down 'own' they get a message,"You access privileges do not allow you to perform this action". Is there a trick to modify the text? I would like this message to be alittle more informative. TIA jerry

Can I stop FM from filling in default name when I open a file? When I go File/Open "myfile", I get a dialog... Open "myfile" using... with an account name already filled in (it appears to default to the 'owner' of the computer). Thanks John

It appears that I have locked myself from my own database. We are using server 8. On the FILE drop down Menu I selected FILE OPTION. When the pop up window appears I have unchecked the LOGIN USING checkbox which was previously checked. Now I can not log into the file with my password or the adminstrator password. Any ideas?

Is there anyway to control what records a user sees based on login? Specifically, I have a database with 1,500 records - students served in 25 different schools (field = Service School). I'd like users to login and only see the one school assigned to them.

I currently have a solution, where I have different layouts available to different users, based on there priviliges. What I would llike it to do is when you login and your username/password is correct, execute this script. And when its incorrect execute another script. I tried using the Get(LastMessageChoice), but then realized that was only good for custom dialog boxes. If anyone could help me get on the right path it would be appreciated. I'm trying to limit some user's to seeing only specific records. I've created a privilege set that has Custom Records access with View privileges limited to record with values that match a field in their personal record. It does just what I'd expect, but then they are unable to search. Any attempt yields "no records match this set of find requests" even if they simply copy a field value and paste it back into the find request. Like what's up?

I'm thinking about buying Filemaker Pro 8 for my medical practice. I know an entire file can be kept private by way of a password, but I'm wondering if certain areas, fields, or pages of information can be kept private without the entire file being password protected. I work with a few people in the office who need access to a file on a given patient, in order to look up information not related to their diagnosis or treatment. But certain info must be kept private in the database and restricted from viewing as well as editing. Can FMP 8 be set up so that someone can see certain information but not all info? When I try to open any FM8.5 database on any remote drive, FileMaker 8.5 errors that it cannot open this file (Not Found). However, I can copy the file to the local drive and open it, I can even delete it from the remote drive through the file sharing, but I cannot open it. I tried creating a new file from a FM template, dragged it onto the hard drive of 2 different Macs on the network, same behavior on all FM 8.5 files on all Macs. Filemaker 6 files work fine. What's up with that??

I recently inheirited a simple little database that runs a proofing application for our company. The problem is, the old admin locked everyone out of the front-end layout options. He was recently removed from the building, & all eyes turned to me to crack this database. I know NOTHING about FMP. All I know how to do is push the little buttons he created. I'd like to restrict a user to only see records that have a certain field value. So if a user named 'jones' logs in, he would only see records where the field 'owner' has a value of 'jones'. Seems awfully simple, but I can't quite pull it off. Could someone help me out here? Thanks!

can some please point me to ways of controlling login and privs. What I'm wanting is a filemaker document that user will open from their computer, allow the user to enter their name and password, this would then be checked against a database on the server. Once they have logged on then can choose what database they want to see. Some users will have full privs to all while some users will have full privs on some and read-only on others. I need to develop a timeclock solution in FileMaker. We have multiple sites, with one primary site with approximately 500 users and 2 remote sites with approximately 50 users each. The network connections from the remote sites to the primary site are relatively low-bandwidth and high lag. What I'm leaning towards is setting up a client side file that would be distributed to each user's computer. When opened, this file would connect to the appropriate server and import any updated information. The user would enter their time and associated details, and when closing the file and/or via a button, copy the records they've created back to the server. So far, so good.…

I have a database that has 2 main lauyouts, Main Menu (for users) and Admin Menu (for Admins). I want to limit users to just the Main Menu layout and give rights to Admins to access both layouts. I have a .fm7 solution which is sold to offices where i don't have security control over the filemaker host. Without this physical security of the machine, the database seems pretty open to mischievous password crackers. I am worried that a particular office has cracked the Full Access password and has been programming the database w/o me. Anyone have any good ideas for making sure the Full Access privilege password hasn't been changed?

Hey guys, how do you setup and maintain login security for FM files using the seperation method. If it is stored in the GUI file how do you get the login info from the client old GUI file to your updated GUI file (besides asking for their old GUI file)? Or do you use an alternative login method, i.e. third file and not use FM security? Some examples would be appreciated. Cheers

Our IT folks are wanted detailed information on Filemaker security for our solution we are putting on the web. Is there points I can give them to show that Filemaker is a solid platform to use. We have FM 6.04 unlimited - Port 591 Apache 2 - Port 80 PHP 5 The FM databases are on a different machine running FM server 5.5. The databases have built in security and authorization to open them. We also run Web Security databases to lock down files to only the access we want. Any info or help would be appreciated and these IT people and just looking for a way to force us to switch to Oracle.

Hello, i have build a database with the two file schema, one for front end and relations and the back end with only the data tables. this is just so i can do updates to the program without modifying the database itsself. I not have come into the problem that i would like to secure it. i would like to have custom accounts for each type of user and many users itself ( < 100 ) maby 1 or 2 on at once within out local network. there is no real security risk with people viewing the data so much as it is just machine reports and inventory. but i would like to prevent from accidental changes. what is the best way to administer so many users. How do I restore the Admin account with no password? I'm using Filemaker Pro 7. I tested a database I created for Web sharing (the guest account didn't work the way I wanted to so I set up two accounts). Now I want to restore it to the original security settings, with no account login required--I'm the only one developing this database and accessing it. I've tried removing all the accounts but Admin in the File Options settings, but nothing works. Hi, I keep all my passwords, credit card info and more very sensitive things in a simple text filemaker database. Im using Filemaker Pro7 I set up a password by Defining Accounts and Privileges, changing the account name and password. Now when I open my file it does ask me for my password.... Here's my question: Is this truly safe? Did I do it correctly? Id like to be sure. Does Mac Keychain have anything to do with this? Thanks for any tips or advice!

It appears that Filemaker sees the default Admin account differently than all other accounts including those with the [Full Access] privilege set, and it slows things down by a couple of orders of magnitude. As a test case I attempted a sort on an un-stored calculated column in a table with ~40K rows (this is not something I want/ need to do in my solution, it's just how I stumbled onto this and a good way to highlight the problem). When logged in as the default "Admin" user created by Filemaker, FMP sifts through roughly 300 records/ second. Hi everyone. I have a FM7 database on a shared drive that I want to be accessed according to priviledges. I setup the users under "File-Define-Accounts/Priviledges" and then "Edit-Sharing-FileMaker Network", but when I closed out of the program and re-opened it, I was not prompted to enter a username or password. How is this activated? Is this because I'm recognized as the admin user already?

Going crazy here......can someone help? How can I block a field so that no on othere than "Full-Access" users can see a field? THANKS!

Alrighty I need help desperately, and after looking over what others have wrote it doesn't look good. One of my database files got trashed the other day so I've been frantically trying to recover it. I still know my password for filemaker (the program) and have punched in every single combination I can think of. I'm very organized with my passwords but as of right now none of them are working. Is there anyway to reset the password for this file? Any and and all help would be appreciated beyond words.

I'm upgrading from FMP7 to 8.5 to take advantage of new features. I can transfer data from old to new files easily enough with the Import function. But is there a way to transfer the Accounts and Privileges (along with current passwords) from the old to my new file? I don't want to know the passwords and I don't want to require all users to re-enter theirs... Thanks, Larry Goldman

I'm wondering if it is possible to give a user something other than full account privileges and yet still allow them to reset and/or delete user passwords. Is this possible?

I'm using filemaker pro 6. This is the problem. I want to create different users for a filemaker database And I want to be able to keep track of who creates records and modifies records. When my database opens I want a prompt for a username and a password. And I want that username to be automatically entered into a "record created by" field every time a new record is created by the user who is logged into the database. Does anyone know if there are any character and length limitiations on FM pusernames and passwords, and if so, what are they? I haven't been able to find any documentation, but we seem to have issues with usernames andpasswords longer than 26 characters.

We have created a separate DB with relationships to other databases. Now here is my issue. I only want to allow access to the new DB to certain people. so I have created a local user on the new DB to login to. When this local user loges in they get a file not found on any area with a relationship. Now if I login with one of the external server users that has rights to the new DB and the the existing DB everything is seen correctly. So how do I allow the new users to access the new DB with the WEB without giving them access to the DB that contains the data? You would think the relationship would handle the permissions form the new DB to the existing DB. Look like this not …

Attached there is a file I was playing arount to create a date validation and a maximum records allowed calculation, the date and serial part works fine but combined in one script I have trouble. We were using 7 developer and upgraded to 8 when it came out, up until now however we never needed to be on the same database since upgrading. Now however we're getting a toomany liscensed user error, with 7 we were able to have up to 3 developers on a file at a time, did they change this in 8? Am i going to have to buy another developer licencse?

I've set up my DB on my laptop, and now that it's ready to go I have copied it on a CDR and moved it to a new machine. I have setup the custom menus and given only myself access to the full standard menu set. Users only get access to limited menus. But on the new machine, when I sign in with my admin name and password, I no longer have access to the full menu set! The TOOLS menus is gone, as is the LAYOUT menu. In a custom solution created for a small business, the employee time clock can be easily circumented by some individuals who just change their computer workstation clocks to reflect what they wish their clock-in or clock-out time to record. Shouldn't FMP (or FM Server) be using a network server clock only? Does this funtionality need to created or changed in the custom solution. Hello all, I have inherited a filemaker 5.0 application. It is currently hosted on a Mac OS 8.6. Its running on FileMaker Server 5. Now that I have secured the main password, I'm trying to make a change to the application. Basically, I'm trying to add a new employee's name to a pull down list. I've opened up the form in layout mode and I noticed that the values in the pull down menu are not just a list of values typed in with commas between them (I was hoping for that!). I have security enabled in FM for my inputers (Meaning I have turned on view and add only option)but now I can not use the cut and past function in FILEMAKER. Is there a way just to turn this on, without turning on the option to delete pages or other items like this? Any help will help. Thank you.

Hi everyone, I have been developing in FileMaker for a number of years (since v2.0). I am an in-house developer at a law firm. Here is the problem. I have designed a database that keeps track of employee info. One of the fields is for salary. The firm does not want me to have access to the data in that field. I cannot think of a way to lock myself from a field and still be able to work as a designer on the system. Essentially, they do not want me to view any of the salary information that is to be entered in the system. I've never had a situation like this to date. Can anyone suggest a way of doing this? I have a need to not only limit the records viewable based on user login, but I would also like to limit the items in a drop down list based on that login. This would be for Client Access to the database. For example, we could have 6 different jobs we are tracking from 3 different clients. For Ease of this example, lets say each client has 2 jobs in our database. When that client logs in, I only want him to see his records, but even more than that, we have some drop down lists that are generated by ProjectNames. Normally this would dynamically list all 6 projects to choose from. But I would want to limit this list to just his 2 projects. Make sense? …

I was playing around with the file/options trying to test out the privilages I had set. I chose to log in using the guest account. Now because is starts with the guest account evert time I don't have the privilages to set it back a full access account. Can anyone help? Thanks.
