Hi Guys, Is there a way that when a particular value is entered in a field, the entire row that the field is in will become hightlighted with a specified color? The idea is, we've made a call log and want the row of the unreturned call to become hightlighted when we select "Call back" in our "Call status" column. Also, I'm working in "Table View". Thanks

Hi, I'm creating something akin to a ticketing system and I want to create a new 'status' record everytime I update the status of this ticket. So, the 'status' table contains the ticket ID, the date modified, and the text. How can I make a portal on my 'ticket' page that shows *all* the text I typed in for each update, and not just one line? I've followed examples for portals, and all I've seen are 'line items' where the data is only one line deep anyways, not a paragraph of data. Am I coming at this the right way?

Whenever I create a new record each file increments by 1. This shows how many companies I have. EG 1 2 3 But say that I delete number 2. How can I then create another company so that it automatically numbers this as 2 and not 4? Thanks in advance if someone can help.

I would like to have a single field be able to display several different value lists based on context from another field without doing it relationally or changing layouts. Example: There are 2 fields. field#1 can have a value of a, b, or c. field #2 will then have a particular value list based on the value in field#1. In this example, there would be 3 different value lists, each corresponding to a, b, or c. Thanks in advance for reading my problem and providing your input, here we go: I have 2 test fields, Text field A and Text field B. Text field A, is set as Drop-down list and the "Include "Edit.." box is checked to allow users to add values. I am creating a database to track scientific instrumentation. Many items require a yearly calibration and it is important to keep records of previous years results. I wish to place the cal sheets as individual PDF's in container fields. Do I have to create multiple containers manually and then populate with files or is there a technique to do this automatically ?. This idea will be used for equipment photographs as well. I guess another way would be to create a scrolling text box that has each line as a link to an image, PDF etc. However I have not seen any facility for adding this type of format to text.

Hello, I have a layout which I would like to "auto sort". In other words, whenever the layout is viewed the contents are sorted by date. I know I could achieve this using a scripted button, but I would prefer it if whenever this layout is viewd that the contents will sort automatically. I'm a newbie to FMP, and currently am doing a trial to see if I can get away from the problems I ahve with MS access. I have an application that is somewhat inverted: The normal view is the summary, but I want to click on things to get more detail. I've built a database for orienteering. An orienteering control is a marker attached to tree or fence post in the field. Each marker has a bunch of data associated with it, GPS coordinates, local description, maintenance history, who placed it, when it was last checked, used in a meet, found in a meet. Is there a way for me to center my layout and still stay within the printing margins? I've accepted the fact that I need to stay within the 8 x 11 boundaries for printing purposes, but it sure drives me crazy when working in the database and my database is shoved to the left while I have a huge margin of empty area to the right of the center. I would like for it to be dead center in the middle of the screen. Thanks for your help.

Is there a method of executing a script for printing labels from a layout served via the IWP? Printing direct is out because it's essentially a web page, but a script? Is this possible? Using Server 8 to distribute info throughout a company using web browsers, but the warehouse needs to print labels of parts (both sheet and Zebra printers). Any ideas?

I'm still a newbie to FMP and am struggling with the page breaks. I work on a 19" wide screen set to 1440 x 900. So of course I have designed our database interface to take advantage of the extra screen space. The problem is my interface does not fall within the 8 x 11 page FMP has given me to work with. So when I print, instead of it being on one page, it is split between two pages. I have searched the forums, gone through the FMP men options and just can't seem to find a setting to change the page breaks. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Hello, Here is what I am sure is another simple newbie question, but I just cant figure it out. I have a layout with a date field and about 25 fields each one containing a number. EX: Date: 01/13/2007 Field 1: 2 Field 2: 55 Field 3: 8 Etc. When a new record is created the date field is automatically entered. So now I have a date field and 25 fields containing numbers. What I am attempting to do (without success) is to be able to run total for each field for a certain date range. I have layoutA for tableA related to tableB with a cartesian (by their respective uniq id's). On layoutA I have a field set up to display a dropdown using a value list. The value list is supposed to come from a field called AcountName in tableB. In tableB, these Account records have a SortOrder field, each with a unique character. In the relationship, I have tableB set to sort by that SortOrder field, but when I use the dropdown on LayoutA, the AccountName items do not appear in the sorted order. What am I doing wrong? Hi Guys I'm having a problem which I suspect is very simple to sort out. I normally use FM on a Mac, where I can easily select multiple items in a value list at the same time by using the Apple / Cmd key, then hit return to add all of those items to my choice. However, I don't appear to be able to do the same thing on a PC. This may be because I'm attempting to do it using Virtual PC running Windows XP rather than a seperate machine, but maybe someone can help? In trying to use a single-row scrollable portal to display large blocks of text, I've encountered a couple of strange behaviors that I haven't been able to figure out. Basically, the text within the portal is affecting areas of the layout outside of the portal (behaviors are described in detail in the example file). Before I abandon this approach, does anyone know of any "rules" to apply for such extended uses? Or am I completely off of the pavement in trying to use portals this way? Thanks for any help. Does anyone know how I can get this effect(highlighted on "invoice")? The Invoice Pic is just some generic pic found on the web. The Preveiew is what my form looks like. I have the description field set to slide as needed and works quite well I just think the seperators make it look more professional. The description can be 1 to 20 or more lines of text. My company makes unique parts and each requires a little different wording. Sometimes there is only 1 line item, sometimes as many as 20. I have downloaded an 8.5 trial and a few Web Viewer examples and so far I'm pretty disappointed. None of the examples I have been toying with will display a PDF, local or otherwise, stored as a reference or file. The only thing that happens is that the first time I import a PDF and FM tries to display it in the Web Viewer, I get a dialog box asking me to open something. What I am supposed to be looking for, I have no idea — files are grayed, browser apps are grayed, and Acrobat is selectable but nothing happens when selected. I am totally confused by this. Page margins for A4 In layout mode FM shows the page for A4 205 X 270mm but every printer has sizes for A4 210X297mm. This makes the document to be printed in less area of the paper. I tried to fix page margins of the layout printing but the mistake is regard to the dimensions of the paper not of the page. I suppose that FM takes the dimensions of the paper the printer gives not its dimensions. Any help please... Pascal

I don't know if I'm pushing the capabilities of FileMaker but it appears so. Is there a limit the number of layouts you can create? I'm trying to simply copy and paste components in different layouts and the spinning beachball is spinning for a good 30 seconds each time (sometimes longer). I've tried cranking the memory allotment way up (256MB). Performance is only slightly better in 8.5 vs. 8.0 I have a ton of relationships and over 170 layouts. I just tried to copy a simple box, nothing more, and the beachball just sits there spinning away. I checked the performance stats in Activity Viewer (Mac OS X) and it is showing a huge amount of processor activity. …

When working on developing layouts I gotten to wondering just how is the Display Data From list organized in the Field/Control Setup window? Sometime the list looks just as I have all the fields defined and organized in the custom order I have in Define database window but other times the list is all discombobulated. Does anyone know what criteria does FileMaker uses in organizing that list?

I want to be able to put text on a layout, and when I run my mouse over it (without holding it down) I want a little window to pop up with text info that I have entered. Like a balloon window with directory information. I don't know if this is possible in Filemaker but if it is, I want to do it. Can someone help me? I think tabs are pretty nifty. My application already has a bazillion layouts and being able to parse the view from within a layout is outstanding. Until it comes to printing the document. Is there a way to disable the graphic or somehow otherwise make it disappear from the printed document. What I want to print out is the data within each tab, not the tab graphic itself. Any ideas? New at this so please bear with me. I am designing a database for work and need to recall data into one layout from another. e.g. In Quotes Iayout I have: Room A, 4.5m length, 5.0m width, 3.0m height Room B, 7.2m length, 5.0m width, 3.6m height etc, etc. In Accounts layout I wish to recall all the relevant data just by typing in say Room A and having all the dimensions displayed automaticaly. Hi everyone! Just a quick formatting question... I'm not sure if this is even possible. I have a pop-up list containing about 20 items. When the list pops up, it only shows around 10 items in the window -- the rest you must access with the scroll bar. We're rolling out 8.5 to our clients and have discovered that automated print scripts that worked in 8.0 no longer work in 8.5. Clients are using Zebra and Dymo printers. When comparing the two, preview of the label looks and prints fine in 8.0. In 8.5 it's totally hosed and won't print correct (FM is fairly close to previewing what will print). Has anyone else experienced this? How did you fix it?

Hi, has anyone any idea how to get rid of the ugly borders around the webviewer on Windows? All I found out is that it has nothing to do with the border-settings in FileMaker. On Mac the webviewer integrates seamlessly into filemaker - which looks really cool. Any ideas? Regards, Horst

Hi, I am not sure this is the right forum for this question. If not, please excuse me. Here is my question: is there any way to implement a drag and drop functionality in Filemaker? (not in the web version, just the plain client/server network version). What I would like is, having 2 or 3 portals, to be able to select, drag from one portal and drop to the other portal and in this way stablish a relationship between line X in portal 1 and line Y in portal 2. A drop down list in portal 2 with the values in portal 1 is not a viable solution (too many lines in portal 1, among other reasons). Thank you and regards

I was thinking that I could do this with a portal so I posted here. And I have not yet been able to do what I want. Which is to have a list of the found set appear on the screen without leaving Browse Mode. My Browse Mode screen is a record about a single plant, and I search using various criteria to create a list; and then want to click the list so I can see more info about the plant. I hope this isn't so confusing. I tried a portal based on a self relationship but this won't work. Am I trying to do something impossible? I also tried having a new window appear, with the found set in a list view, but was unsuccessful withat that as well. Michael

Hi, I am very new to this application and I am trying to have repeating regions for calculation part of the invoice. Thus, Hours, Labour Description, Unit Price and Amount. However, underneath I would like any unpaid invoices added. I have looked at other solutions, and they seem to use a Portal Setup, but I can not see where this information is coming from. Quick question for all, I am trying to filter a portal in a somewhat difficult way and was hoping someone might have some advice. I have a Calendar DB and a Lead Management DB. I want to display booked appointments from the Lead Mgnt DB in the Calendar for everyone to see through a portal. The two DB's are linked through a type and date. Now the complicated part is the Lead DB is of people, separated my numbers and letters; ex: 25823.AB or 35813.AD, 35813.BD, 35813.CD, ect. How do I go about increasing the list of known fonts FileMaker recognizes on a particular machine? I have one computer that has all the fonts in its fonts folder that were used in creating the layouts in one of our systems. However, FM only lists 3 fonts it recognizes. Oddly, the layouts look fine as FM subs for one of the fonts it knows. The problem lies in printing. IF Fm doesn't have the font it prints meanignless garbled messes. Any ideas on how to add more fonts the the FM list? Thank you.

Hi there, Does anyone know of a way to abort the closing of a file when the user closes the file's last open window? If they close their last open window accidentally, I want to provide an opportunity to cancel shutdown and restart the application. I have a Shutdown script that's performed automatically when Closing the file. Cancelling the Shutdown script (and performing a Restart script) is no problem, but the file continues closing once the Restart script is finished. Is there anyway to stop the file from closing? I am trying to derive an exclusion list from related tables. Simply - I have 3 tables, Groups, Contacts and Joiner. There are many Groups. There are many Contact. One Contact can be in Many Groups and the group membership is stored in the Joiner table. Using different layouts with portals I can 1. I downloaded a layout that I have used to create screens for data entry and I would like to create a columnar report format using the same layout. I tried making a report by duplicating the layout and making it viewable as a list but instead of consecutive rows of data on the one layout I get each record on an individual layout. Is there a way to import a layout into the layout themes that are available in the New/Layout Report option? What I want is a columnar report using the custom layout that lists consecutive rows of data and has a summary field on the bottom. ANy advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Simple database. Tables Customers Jobs Orders Staff I have two customers in this sample database. Related to the Jobs table with League ID. On the Jobs table, I want to select the "League Name" which is the Customer's Business Name for practical purposes. I set up a Value List based on fields, with a drop down box - selecting the League ID & League Name and enabled the "return second value only" which in my case is the League Name. When I select one of the League Names, it was returning League ID instead. And, in the Customer's table, it was editing the League Name to the League ID. Hi, First off, this is for an IWP solution... Here's the problem. I have a user defined "Find" script in which the user is first taken to a layout to set the date range in a couple of Global fields. (Thank you to Stuart, Mr. Vodka and many others for that help!) Then the user advances to the next layout, the search criteria window. (this allows the setField to calc the date range and plug it into the date to search window.) I am working on a test application and have run into a snag. I have created the database in FM Pro 8.5 advanced. I have some basic fields and one Container for Quicktime movies and audio files. The Files are recorded through Quicktime Player, and then saved to the desktop. From there, I "right-click" the container and add the Quicktime file. The files are viewable and playable in the Filemaker Pro application without complication, BUT, when the database is shared using web sharing, I cannot view the multi-media content in the container. Hi, I am not quite a newbie, but have a pretty simple question for most of you here. I have revamped the FMP Business Productivity Solution to suit my business. I have been able to change ALL but one thing, and cannot figure it out. When in the sales orders section, I select an invoice, and click sales invoice, which runs a script to report the Sales Invoice, but on the sales invoice there is still a Generic place holder, at the top that says, "COMPANY NAME & LOGO", "Company Address - Phone - Fax - Email. FMP V6.04 I like to create a button that by clicking it would copy 8 fields (all address details of a client) so I can paste it in to another document. I am not sure how to go about this. Do I need to write a script, and if so does anybody have a sample as I am not sure how to go about it. Alternatively I can think of creating a layout like an envelope and copy it from there. However I ma not sure ho to do this either so I do not have to leave the record in order to do this. I am using an email script to have FMP 6 send an email via Microsoft Entourage. In my signature in Microsoft Entourage I have a pic. However if I use the script Microsoft Entourage produces an email without my picture in the signature. Any tips? Second problem is that it puts the new email in the drafts folder; I would like it to open the email and leave the new mail open. Any tricks for this? Thanks

I have a portal that I would like to sort different ways via buttons. So far, the only way I can see is to create a different layout for each portal since the sort order is set when the portal is created. This would be a huge pain. I'm guessing there's a better way.... HELP! Thanks, Mel

Is there any way to acheive tight vertical line spacing on printed reports with FileMaker? I've tried both normal fields and merge fields without success, yet the line spacing for a plain text block can be set to less than one line (e.g., line spacing = .7) and receive the desired result. As my example file shows, setting a normal field to less than the font's default causes descenders to be cut off. Can anyone suggest another approach to try (short of a calculated field that tries to combine hundreds of lines into a single field)? Thanks for any help. LineSpaceTest.fp7.ZIP

FMP V6.04 I would like to create a button that would dial a telephone number over the speaker of my computer, so that I could hold my phone in front of it and as such dial the number. BTW I use tone dialling. Is there a script for FMP 6 to do this? Or is there a standard way to set it up and it would work? Thanks for your help

Howdy, howdy... I have a run-time solution with a script that takes users to a splash screen/EULA agreement (see attached). The problem is, with the script as written (also attached), users can simply click on the Continue button in the Status Area as well as blow past the screen by selecting a different layout. What I'd like to do is take the users to the EULA screen where they'll be forced to click on either the "I agree" or "I disagree" buttons, then they'll be handed-off to the next script. I am setting up our FM data base to use Canada Post's online shipping. I would like to use the Web Viewer to populate the shipping form with data (name, address, etc.). However the form is built with Java Script, and it doesn't have parameters as part of its URL. I've tried writing a script to do this. But executing the script, even with key commands, pulls the focus out of the form. Even naming the Web Viewer object and using Go to Object doesn't help. Perhaps including a tab character in a script would help, but I haven't found a way to do that. Help will be much appreciated.

Hi, Brand new to FM. I probably don't even know the terminology well enough to ask a question in a way that can be understood, so I'd appreciate your patience as well as any advice. I'm sure there's a simple way to get around this problem, but I haven't seen it. I have a text field on a layout that has to be filled in. In my educational database I have many student records and many other tables with school elements. I need to create a special layout from fields from different tables to make an autocomplete certificate or a perfomance paper. I wonder if I should create a particular table with fields from all related tables. Does anyone have to suggest a respectable solution to this problem? I really have a problem because portals or like that in such a layout do not work at all. Certificates also do not need a portal but many fields from different tables...I am confused. Pascal Help!

In my main database, I want to set a field from "NO" to "YES" if all fields in the portal have a specific field set. Specifically, I've got a portal with academic transcript information, one line per institution. Hi, I'm having trouble trying to figure out how to jump to records via a pull down menu. For example, if I had a database of records each containing a first name field and a last name field. I would like a pull down menu where you see a list of all the last names, and when you select a last name from that pull down menu, you are taken to the record containing that last name. I've included a basic demo file hoping someone could help out and tweak it so it does what I want. I can get the pull down list to show the names, it just doesn't do anything. I am almost done with this project. It has been a year and you guys have helped me out a lot. I have one more question. I have a created a group data report that lists the workflow (design, production and design/production), relevant information for each record in that workflow, then the subtotal for the workflow. I need to also show a monthly break down. I have a date field (01/01/2007) that contains this data for each job number when it was created. Hello, How can I force a field to retain the font size, style, and formatting that i've set it to? Users are able to override this and change the font when they enter data, but I don't want them to be able to do that. For example, they'll cut and paste from a Word document and my pretty Arial 10pt field will suddenly have Times New Roman 12pt text in it. Is there a calculation or something I can do to the field so that it re-sets the field's text formatting or simply ignores any formatting that the user tries to do? Thanks in advance, Frank

Hi, I am a beginner in filemaker programming. I am trying to achieve the following: In a layout, the user will enter a record number (eg: 0001, 0002, 0003)and click on a button. Based on the number entered the code in the button should connect to an Oracle db using ODBC, get the required values from the selected record and create a record in filemaker db. So, if I enter an employee number and click the button in the layout, the employee name, salary, age etc. should be populated in the layout. How can I achieve this. Hello, For some time I've been using a script to copy the content of a portal to a textfield. It's been working great and I tried to take it to the next level by adding more portals and an equivalent number of textfields. The portals seem to be working without any problem. It seems however that the script to copy the content is only working correctly for the original portal. For the added portal only the first line is copied. Weird thing is that the first line is multiplied by the number of rows in the other (original) portal. Hi, I have read through a bunch of articles on this site about hiding buttons in portals and I still don't quite get it. I want something very similar to what is present in a lot of the built in templates that come with Filemaker 8 (ie Lending Library). I need a button to delete records in a portal, I only want the button to be present if there are portal records. I am a piano tuner in the panhandle of Nebraska. I have an awesome database for my business thanks to the help of a Filemaker Consultant out of Colorado. I'm trying to learn how to add more features to my database myself and am having a lot of fun doing it. I added a webviewer so that I can see a map for the address of each client. This is great for seeing where they live when I'm at home and connected to the internet, but I would like to be able to see the map on my laptop while driving to their house. I have a very simple request for help (well I thnik so) I have managed to import to my database from excel all the membership info of my Club. I have designed a resonable layout, and have managed to place a couple of buttons, now this is where I am stumped. I have incorporated Filemaker Magazine's technique for creating a dynamic value list into my database. If you look at my file: www.jarrodprice.myhomeserver.com/sampledb.fp7 in the first layout called Web Interface, you can select from my dynamic value list which was built with the Categories_me table. This technique appears to require that every field has a unique name. This does not make sense. Every field has its own id, but the way it is set up, it doesnt work. Ok, I’m lost as an Easter egg on this one. This is kind of a layout question so I will post it here. I have a report that can be printed two ways…either by button 1”All Hours” or by button 2 hours “By Year” for an individual. The “All Hours” of the report I have in place and prints great. Hello all, I currently have a tabbed layout, one of the tabs contains a portal “Qualification” another tab contains a protal "Certifications". In the first tab is the "Qualification" portal containing dates, names etc fields… and,at the end of the portal row is a notepad icon. Hello everyone. I'm having a problem with a set of radio buttons on my layout. I have a field that is configured to be a radio button field with three options. The field works fine and sets the value based on the selection. My question is that the radio button doesn't "fill." You click on the button but it doesn't turn black or show what you selected. I have an Invoice layout (invoice table) with portal rows(invoice data table) of invoice line items. Would like to be able to duplicate the invoice and have the line itmes in the portal be duplicated as well. This would create a new invoice with the serial number incremented by one and the portal data duplicated with the new serial number. End result would be: two invoices with identical data but different invoice numbers.
