Does anyone have any details on the client server interactions of making database schema changes? The reason I ask is because, while developing a solution file on my laptop using wifi, the wifi has on two occasions dropped out in the middle of processing a schema change. This means the file becomes totally corrupt, and I have to go back to a backup file. I would have thought that that sort of thing would have been transactional, ie the FM client sends all changes at once to the server for processing, the server checks it's a complete and valid request, then all the operations done exclusively on the server, with it just sending informational progress update…

Hi Guys, Ive got some spare time, and as a member of the FSA I received my copy of FMS Advanced Developer Edition. Ive finally decided to install it on a Windows Server 2000 machine, installation as far as I know went as it should. Ive created an identifier and passcode Web Admin Console says [not yet connected]. When I try typing in http://127.0.0.1/fmi/config I get an Page cannot be found. Both services for server and publishing engine are running. When I type in http://127.0.0.1, I get an index of all the folders in my wwwroot folder with "Apache/2.0.55 (Win32) PHP/5.1.2 Server at 127.0.0.1 Port 80" at the bottom. Anyone guide me to the config scree…

I have a layout that uses several portals, most of which work fine. One, however, "forgets" the records it is supposed to display. If I actually go to the layout of the record(s) it is supposed to be displaying and create a new record or duplicate one that exists, suddenly all the records that should have been contained within appear, including the newly created record. When the file is closed and reopened the same thing happens—records are absent until the entire process is repeated. I've done the usual checks and tests of the relationships and everything is fine. I should mention that this only happens when the file is being shared, by FM Server 8. If the file is opened…

I am a rockie when it comes to databases and I am trying to teach myself as i go along as my boss have given me the job to create a database (don't ask me why) How ever as all this is new to me i would like to know where to start. Basically what should we invest in. It's a small company with 10 computers and they would like to have a database on the server so all can access their clients details. Do you need to install filemaker on all computers? and could i build the database on my laptop from home and then transfer the file to the server? I bet it's really stupid questions. Greatful for any replies... Frida

(i'm a filemaker newbie) I have a filemaker 7 database right now and I want to share it with 2 other computers on my network. Can I purchase filemaker 8 for those 2 computers and access/save changes to the filemaker 7 database without any problems? or would it be better to upgrade and have all 3 computers running filemaker8?

I'm trying to share a FM 8 database (Windows) via TCP/IP ... peer to peer. I have one computer as the host with the files in question opened - logged on as Admin with full privledges. I choose Edit >> Sharing >> FileMaker Network. I make sure turn it on. However whenever I change my selection for the "Do Not Display in Open Remote Dialog" that change does not stick. Let me explain... if I make a change to the "Do Not Display in Open Remote Dialog" setting and then immediately attempt to "open remote" via another computer on the network I can see the files as set on the host and everthing works fine. But if I wait a few minutes and try again (th…

A lot of the navigation techinques within my first multiuser solution depend upon global fields. A user may go to a layout and work there for awhile before returing to the original layout (or some other layout). Where you came from is stored in a global. That's how the solution knows where to return to when the user hits the "Return" button. What if someone else uses the same global during a wait period? Or in the middle of running a script that depends on a global. If all users shared the same globals, then this would make my solution behave totally eratically! Have I totally screwed up? Jason

Hi, I have coworkers sitting at customers sites with restricted surfing possibilities, they can access port 80 only at external sites. My IWP solution for timetracking starts at port 80, but answer them on port 16080. I´ve been looking around for a setting somewhere, but cannot find any in WPE. Maby a setting in Apache? A login at: http://:80/fmi/iwp/cgi?-db=&-startsession Returns: http://:16080/fmi/iwp/cgi?-db=-loadframes If they manually change the port to 80 it works, but thats an ugly feature... Can anyone help? I do know it is bad to open a shared file over a network. But is it also bad to open a single user file on a network drive? I have an employee who has 15 files that she has on her desktop and uses but she wants them on the server so they are backed up with everything else. I do not want to load these 15 files on the fmserver because my # of fies is already over 100 and I do not want to host more files if they are only going to be used by 1 person every once in a while. Would it be safe to store the files on the fileServer and allow her to open them as single user? The FileServer is a Windows 2003 SBS, the FMserver is version 5.5 on a Windows 2003 Std Serv…

I have a customer that has had FMSA running on an old iMac, and now we are trying to move it to a much faster Mini. FMS its self works much faster, however I can not get the ODBC connection to work. So I did a fresh install of 10.4.6 server (which is what they have been using) on an external firewire drive. Installed FMSA 7.0v4 with the v5 ODBC drivers. If I attach the drive to a G5, and boot to it, everything works, including the ODBC connection. I then take the same drive and put it on the Mini, and the ODBC connection does NOT work. I have tried thsi on 2 different Mini's and get the same result. Any ideas? I know people say not to use the Mini, but in this…

I am trying to determine what kind of performance I need out of my hardware given a couple of different scenarios. I am setting up a php site on a third party web server, so I don't have to worry about a complete lack of web presence if our connection is down in the office. (which I have already determined will require me to know what components they have turned on and off in php) I want this site to use data coming from a FMSA server at our location with the Server being one box and the webserver for the Web functions of FMSA being another box. As far as the servers here, which one is going to take the most heat when having the data accessed from the web? …

Hi everybody, I have established remote administration of FM Server 7, and everything works fine year and half. But, we changed internet connectivity in office ( ADSL instead of wireless ) and local IP addresses was changed. After that, I couldn't establish remote administration. When I try to connect on server via FileMaker Server Admin, it brings me message: " Could not connect to FileMaker Server “(IP)”. " Connectivity with server from all machines and to all databases works perfect, just remote administration failed. Port 5003 is open. Any suggestions how to solve problem? TIA

I'm trying to set up Server for the first time. I have a trial version on my Mac Dual G5 Desktop. I also have Filemaker Pro Advanced on my desktop. I have a solution created in FM Pro Advanced that is open. On my laptop, I have launched FM Pro Advanced and am able to open FMServer_Sample. I do not have the option to open my solution. In FM Server, the status for my solution is "closed" When I go to FM Pro Advanced and then to Sharing/Filemaker Network a dialog box opens called "Filemaker Network Settings". Network sharing is turned on. Do I need to change the status of my solution to "open" in FM Server? If so, how do I do this? Thanks

We are using v6 under Windows 2000 terminal services, files hosted under FMServer on a dedicated machine. Problem: if I log into the terminal server with admin rights, FileMaker file opening and closing takes very long, lots of squiggly line and hourglass. One example of an application using 7 related files takes almost 30 seconds to open. If I log on using more typical user rights then opening the same app takes 3 seconds. Same results across all of my apps. FileMaker priveleges have no impact. Anyone know what's up with this?

Hello, I have encountered a problem when 3 or more users are using a file through Server 7 ver 4. There is a three tier relationship in which the grandparent table has a one to many relationship with the parent table which in turn has a one to many with the child table. Records are created in all three tables and later modified, and every once in a while a record in the child table will go missing after modification of either the parent or grandparent table!! This then adversely affects calc fields in the other two tables that reference the child table. This only happens when 3 or more users are working on the file at the same time. They are not, however, working…

I am planning to start a modest database server based around FMAS. The system is likely to serve around 10 databases and never have more that around 10 concurrent users. The databases would themselves would be relatively small with definately less than 1000 entries and probably more like 200. I was planning on headless unit that would be hidden away and adminstered with VNC. Would a dual G5 powermac be overkill? Would a PowerPC mac mini be enough? Thanks for your help.

We have FMS7 running in Mac OS X which is set to backup every 20 minutes. I'm referring to the automated function within FMS7. We then run an Apple Automater script to send a copy of our backup once a day to our Linux machine which masquerades as a Win2K server. This has worked fine for many months until a couple of weeks ago when the internal backup function stopped working. The little button "enabled" would uncheck itself after running once manually. Then after two days of going crazy with this, suddenly it started working again and has done so since... perhaps 10 days now. Has anyone seen this? If so, have you fixed it? How? JG

I don't know if this is a coincidence, but I just installed php5 on our windows 2003 server which is running fmas8 and IIS6. Since I installed php5 and configured IIS to run it, I can't log into the FM web admin console. When I try go to that page now(http://localhost/fmi/config)I get a dialog asking me if I want to save this file called config, so its trying to download the config file instead of showing just showing the config page. Like I said, it wasn't doing this before I installed php and configured IIS, so I'm guessing I need to change a setting in IIS. Thanks for any suggestions anyone can offer.

Is it possible for a Custom Web Published database to execute a script in a database being Instant Web Published? Here is the basic scenario that I desire: 1. User types a URL into a web browser. 2. The index.html file for that URL redirects the user to CWP database. 3. The CWP database then executes a script in a database that is only being IWP'd. 4. The script in the IWP database runs and updates the browser window to display the layout that the script is told to go to. Is this scenario possible? In my preliminary tests, I can't seem to get the browser to switch from CWP to displaying the IWP layout. Thank you, Chris Scott

Howdy - I had external authentication set up and working great between FMS (running on 10.4.5) and the Windows Active Directory Domain (running on Win2K3 Server). At least, it was running great up until we had a power outage on Friday... now external auth. seems to be broken. Users can still log in to files on FMS with FileMaker accounts which are defined inside the files. It's only the external authentication that quit working. I have checked the event log, and it shows that when the server came back up, FMS performed a consistency check on all the files, since they hadn't been properly shut down. All reported being OK. I don't see any troublesome entries…

I'm feeling a bit stupid for asking this but I have never had to do it. I am having a the makers of a plug-in troubleshoot my problems with their product and they have asked me to send them a clone of our file with no data/records. I have our backed up files but obviously they are full of data. The database they need to look at is tied to two others. I guess I need to send them all three. Also, how do I give full access if they have to use a password. Thanks for helping with my problem!

Hi, I am running our database on FM8 (just migrated last month). There are 35 files left after integrating the smaller tables into other files. My users are getting error mesages when editing records saying that the record is already being used/edited and they can't change anything. This happens when only one user is online, so it is not related to other users actually being in the same record. My guess is that it is related to the relations between files (that are still open in the background). Does anyone know how t solve this? Thank you for your time... I'm planning a new Windows server for a large FM8 database, and would like some feedback on hardware. I am looking for as much horsepower as possible in a single-server configuration. I'm planning on 15k SCSI disks and multiple CPUs, but I have some questions. What about quad processors? Would it make more sense to get four single-core CPUs, or two dual-core CPUs? Anyone doing this? Any FileMaker-specific problems or issues I should be aware of when choosing the hardware? How much ram is…

I am starting the process of developing web components of several databases for my school. Hi, I'm reading the External Authentication documentation and I'm starting to realize I've made this a whole bit more complicated that I should have. I do not need to register my server with the directory or enter the distinguished name, or any of that nonsense. Is that accurate? All I need is to have the FMSA registered in tyhe domain I want to use and then create groups in that domain and add users I want to access via those groups then define the access of those groups in each individual FM file. Does that sound right? I think I've got the grasp of it all, but here are my questions. Do the users have to be in the Users OU for this to work? How about th…

So we had a power flash during a lightning storm last week, (4 separate flashes of <1 second each over a two minute period) My filemaker server box (Dual 1.8 G5 with 10.3.9 and FMSA 7) did not go down during this time, and there were clients connected that didn't get disconnected. So I assumed (stupidly as it turns out) that everything was OK. I went out of town for the weekend, and upon return I noticed that my main db was unavailable. checking the server logs showed that the server had closed the file down after an unsuccessful backup attempt in the middle of the weekend. I have timestamped, zipped backups so I reverted to a backup from three hours before …

Has any Filemaker 8 Server user had an issue with the Filemaker Server 8 service not stopping. The service remains in a 'stopping' state. The only way to stop the service is to reboot the server. Any assistance is appreciated.

Hi all, I've just migrated a system running Server v7 to Server v8 (and then patched to 8v2). I stopped the relevant services, then used the Backup Settings Tool to save all the paths and schedules from v8 before removing Server v7. Then installed v8, and used the Restore Settings Tool to, well restore the settings! Everything is fine, except one minor detail. The default Database Path can't be changed or set (it's greyed out) and sadly is set to the old v7 path. It's not an operational issue as I have the db files under a custom path, but I can't change the default which points to a older v7 server path, and hence can't remove the final parts of the v7 f…

FMServer 8 hosted on Win2003 with some clients Win2K and WinXP, some OS X. Still under development. The windows clients are members of an Active Dir. domain, as is the server, which is set to external authentication & SSL. This logs the windows clients in automatically. User jimbob in AD appears as jimbob in Get(AccountName). Mac OS X clients have to authenticate twice, once to the server and once to the first file. But if you come in through mac os x, you have to use DOMAINNAMEjimbob for it to recognize you, so Get(AccountName)="DOMAINNAMEjimbob". So far so good. But the system tracks usage (modified, created, etc.) by account name. If your username is jimbob and y…

OK here's the scenario: FMS8 on windows 2003, 2 NICs, one for all of our internal FM workload, and one that goes directly to our Apache Server for the web publishing engine(the one to our WPE is on it's own subnet with the Apache server so we shouldn't be getting any conflicts there) when we try to use the FMS backup scheduler to do a backup at noon, about two thirds of the files come back as delayed write failure, but we run a nightly as well that runs to the same place on the server("night" folder instead of "noon") and that works just fine. the backups run to a shared drive on a fairly new compaq Prolient server(windows) Anybody have any idea as…

Hi guys, I have question about the protocols for the web publishing engine. I used one computer for configuration: install Filemaker Server, the web publishing engine, and all of the associated software components on the same computer. To communicate with Filemaker Server and web server, the web publishing engine uses the following protocol on the ports indicated. Does anyone have experience of installing Advanced Server and IWP on OS X Server (10.4.6) managed by Tenon iTools? The OS is a clean install with SSL, iTools, FMSA and nothing else. Tenon tell me they have customers running this combination successfully, including Apache 2, but I can't persuade it to open the web admin console with either Apache 2 or 1.3. When I install Server 8 web Publishing everything works fine. I connect to the admin console and create a FMSA user and password. Move on to create a WPE password and user, no problem. Get to point out the FM server, and then it gets problematic. When i register my settings I get an "unexpected error" and then I'm stuck. The WPE user and password i registerd do not work so I can't get in and try something else. So I reinstalled the thing and the same thing happend again. I would be glad for any ideas or comments you can give me.

Every night during the week my server crashes regularly between 5 pm and 6 pm (ie. quitting time). On the weekend, no one is logged in and the server does not crash. On occasion, the server has quit in the middle of the day, typically a Friday. Once it has quit for the day, it will be fine until the next evening. I am not recovering files. I always pull from the latest backup. When the server crashes, I have been watching the Activity Monitor. The “fmserverd” process will go away but the other two FM process will remain. To “restart” the server, I have been replacing the crashed files with my backups and started the Admin app. The “fmserverd” will startup and wo…

I have a fiber internet connection that is working correctly and I'm using FM 8 on Win XP pro. Anyone have any tips or suggestions? Thanks in advance...

Hello everyone, I have this filemaker script which needs to run in the background once a day. Since I purchased Filemaker server 8, I thought I would be able to schedule it but unfortunately I understood that Filemaker Server only runs "shell scripts". I have absolutely no idea what a shell script is and was wondering if someone could help set it up. I should probably just say: open file "TTM bookings" in Filemaker pro 8 and perform script "export all icals for all artists"... I tried to check the net for examples, but I am afraid it is like chinese for me. thank you in advance.

Can anyone suggest a suitable setting for the Database Cache in FM Server 7? According to Filemaker in their "FM Server Best Practices" document, the Database Cache should (as a starting point) be set to 5% of the total size of databases hosted. As the databases hosted on my Server are approximately 65MB at the moment, I set the cache to 5MB. However, whatever I set the cache size to, I seem to be getting 100% cache hits all the time. I've tried it at 200MB, at 100MB at 50MB and all sorts of others, but none seem to change things. Any advice? Thanks

Is there an elegant way for a filemaker user to request (or force) other users to log off via script maker? I have some large batch operations during which I'd prefer for no other users to be using the file simultaneously. It'd be great if there was a script command which would force other users to log off (or at least, send them a message politely asking them to?) I don't absolutely need for this to happen, but I'd feel more comfortable knowing that only the single user is online. I know I can do this via the server console, but I'd rather have a non-super user be able to do this. Since nearly all navigation in this database is scripted, I thought of s…

I haven't pinpointed the problem but here's the circumstances. I'm running FMS8v2 on Mac OS X Server 10.4.5 w/plenty of ram and disk space. I'm serving about 60 files to 20 Mac clients running 8v2. I've recently started consolidating some of my files and I believe it's causing the problem. When consolidating I import a table into the main file, fix/add TOs, import scripts, and duplicate layouts. At some point during this process the majority of my 20 client's FMP application totally freezes requiring a 'Force Quit'. I'll have to do some more experimenting to pinpoint what's causing it and I'll report back. In the meantime I was hoping somebody might shed some li…

I'm running a database that has approx 50 files in it on FM Server 5.5. Will upgrade to Server 8 but cannot do it right now. I need clients with browsing (read-only) privileges to be able to run scripts. Many scripts need to have parameters set by the user for the finds. All entries to set the parameters are in global fields (which my read-only clients have access to). The clients are able to change the global fields but when the script uses the global fields to set criteria for the finds, a message appears saying that the field is not modifiable. This essentially makes most of the reports unusable for my clients. I know that FM 8 allows customized pr…

I have always been over my head in building my databases. I haven't had formal training but do okay. Yhis has been going on for 10 or 12 years. I work on Macs in my business and took that same knowledge to my day job using PCs. They are now licensed on all their computers. I use FMP8Adv on Tiger and XP The problem that I have is I seldom know enough about the total system to correct something if what I am trying to do doesn't work when I do what the instructions say do. That is exactly what happened when I tried to change a main db from single user to multi-user. I changed it on the designated host computer but that was the only computer that would indicate the…

I recently purchased a second-hand version of this for MacOS9/X, complete with serial number and original disk, and have registered already. I need 5.5 because we run Windows, OS9 and OSX machines. Trouble is, we normally run everything in Japanese, and naturally I purchased the Japanese manual. While I can read Japanese fine, I can scan and search through English manuals much faster. If anyone is willing to send me the English PDF of the manual I would be greatful! (Email is fine) Or if anyone knows where to find it online... Thanks! Edward Lipsett elipsett @ intercomltd.com P.S. I _DO NOT_ want a copy of the software, only the manual!

Open URL Script can't execute on FM7 Files published on FM Server Advance 8 using IWP. My remote PC running Win XPSP2, using IE6.0 Browser, can access the published FM File but cannot execute 'Open URL' Scripts. Using Firefox instead of IE also shows same result. Here is my challenge: I am not sure if this question belongs here or under Windows Server or Scripting... Does anyone know how to execute a FileMaker script on FM server 8? I have read elsewhere that it can't be done, but I need to find a solution... I want to download data (from another non-FileMaker system using ODBC) on a daily basis. I have written the scripts and it all works fine, on a client (FM 8 advanced). In FileMaker server 8, what actually happens when a file gets opened and "served"? If I specify a script to execute at file opening (in File Options), it looks like the server ignores that. We had found a way to do that in FileMaker 5 s…

I'm relatively new to Filemaker, so pardon me if this is a basic ("stupid") question. I've FM8 set up in a networked environment where it is hosted on a server and the files are open for sharing to 4 users on our network. One of the users is asking me if she is able to delete a database from a workstation that she is accessing from the hosted server. I've searched the help menus and the knowledge base and see nothing that mentions this. Is this possible? From what I can tell, the file has to be closed on the server before it is deleted. Also, same goes for renaming a file/database. Can a file be renamed by a user who has opened the file remotely? I see you can "Sa…

Hello - Has anyone successfully set up a FileMaker Server running on Mac OS X that uses external authentication from a Windows domain? I realize that it would be much easier to run FileMaker Server on a Windows server since we have a Windows domain, but I don't have that luxury. I don't think our domain server will change any time in the foreeseeable future, if ever.
