I can't figure out how to duplicate a table inside a DB file. A minor annoyance but is there a way to do it? I don't want to have a to recreate all my basic fields in every table (date_modified, date_created, uid, etc. etc.) It would save a little time to be able to duplicate a template table as many times as needed and then start adding the unique fields to each table. I am experiencing difficulty referencing FileMaker Pro 7 objects with AppleScript. On the Filemaker website I can read that the new version is more powerful then before with 100 new features. I have been trying to find the list of this 100 features so I can direct see what have been improved without reading all websites I can find and try to find when in FileMaker 7 trial version. Anybody know of a list like that? I am unable to move my Traditional Chinese fields to FMP7. I originally imported them in my FMP6 as plain ASCII, then assigned a Chinese Font to each Chinese field. This system no longer works. Converting the tab-text files returns unpredictable results: Word seems the only program able to operate, however if I create a text-Tab file exporting every Traditional Chinese field, then saving it as Unicode-Text, FMP7 just refuses to convert. If I import one field at the Time it works around 50% of the time. Other conversion through Text-Edit-Plus, Apple's Tex-Edit or Cyclone never deliver valid files. Another headache comes from Word. I've waited this upgrade for the Unicode and/or Traditional Chinese for months now. Multilingualism is not among the plus in Filemaker main information page for this version although it seems to be there. After downloading ver 7 I saw a truly cumbersome way to handle the fonts, nor a real explanation about this matter in the help file. Transferring 2Bytes Chars text from ver 6 delivers unreadable garbage. Probably because in ver 6 the only way to use 2 Bytes words was importing the 2 Byte Chars in ASCII format and assigning Chinese fonts to specific fields. I'm unclear on a couple of things after reading a bunch of the information about FMP7 on FMI's web site: 1) Is CDML dead? It seems like it isn't mentioned and XML, XSLT, XHTML, etc is mentioned a lot. Is this just in relation to "instant web publishing" and I just missed the section on "custom web publishing"? 2) Will Lasso work with FMP7? 3) Do we need to spend $2500 on FMP Server Advance to do web implementations (instead of $1000 on FMU)? And at that, does it really only support 100 remote users? I have a FM solution created in v 2.x that has grown to a very complex 12 file solution. With FM7, I have decided to recreate the solution instead of porting to take advantage of the new features, rid of some very old structure/fields/scripts no long needed, and because I am suspicious that one of my files may be corrupted. Can I import data definitions into new tables from old files to save on some typing? In previous versions importing scripts was supported and I imagine still is, but is this safe with the question of a file that could be corrupted? Could file layouts that are copied and pasted into the new file be subject to bringing any corruption over? THANK…

Just wondering if anybody else was feeling a little inadequate now that a realatively new release has come out. Over the past 10 years or so I've built up a level of confidence and started to hold myself out as a self-proclaimed expert. I learned all the tricks and work arounds and now overnight, the value of my intelectual knowledge has dropped since I'm starting over again. The more I use it, the more I realize I don't know about the new version. In this sense, it's as if a new verison ends up knocking us all back down to the beginner level again. Just been cruising around the Demo of FM7 and my dream features ain't there: to export digital images to a folder with the primary key as the file name from which they came. Yes, you can do this under the edit menu one image at a time (and thats after I've had to assign the primary key to the file name via Photoshop) via Export Field Contents. Try doing that for a thousand images! And yes there is a similar script step but it seems to assign the file name in sequences that don't relate to the primary key of the file: this is important so I know where that image belongs when it comes back from printing with the file name on the back of the print. We have a FM 5.5 (win) database with thousands linked objects. The linked objects are inserted from subdirectories on a common O: drive. But is seems like the filename is expanded to the UNC when inserted, e.g.: O:datafolderinfo.xls becomes: SERVERdata$folderinfo.xls Now the PROBLEM is, that we have to change network organization, which makes the UNC invalid, but the O:... location will still be correct. Is there any way to automatically search through links in a FM database and correct them? Is there a way to write a script (in 5.5, v6, or v7) or can any plug-ins do the trick? I really like the relationships window, its easy to see how everything relates.. Multi-criteria and comparative operators are powerful extensions to relationships. Multiple tables in one file is also a powerful feature. These features alone will reduce my development time, database complexity, etc. Value lists are still weak. There is no good way to have a record's serial # in a value list followed by an apropos field of info. An option to hide the first field would be great. So in filemaker 6 it works like this: three files A, B, C a is related to B and B to C. Placing a portal in file A with related records in B, one can create a calc. field in file B with data from file C. and then place this on the portal in file A. So FM7 is supposed to have multi-level relationships... I created this 3 table structure in a FM7 file, and I can't figure out how to place the fields directly on the portal 2 (or more) files away. It appears that live backups are possible with FM7. I just performed save a copy... of a hosted file with clients connected to the file and editing records. With FM6 you had to kick all the users to do this. So I guess with applescript or a scheduling plugin, you could do unattended automated backups without the need for FMS. Since my system will never reach beyond 5 users (he says) , I could get by without shelling out $999 for server. Has anyone else noticed this? Version: v7.x Platform: Mac OS X Panther

My first impressions are: I am happy and sad: Happy because: fm becomes a mix of the best things of fm and access Sad because: You have to rewrite your apps. because of the serious change I convert my fm6.0 28 file application . A lot of things went wrong. 1- the links between the files - in fm 7 databases - are corrupted. Hi all, I have the trial version of v7 running on WinXP. Just playing around with stuff really, just seeing what's about. Do you remember the post about the effects of pressing the escape key in a custom dialog box. Well if you did not see this, the discussion was along the lines of the Escape key acts as if you have pressed the default button. Many developers thought it should be used to either just exit the dialog box with no effect or to act as though the cancel button had been pressed. I see that we will still have to resize the columns in the Define Fields window every time we open it. Does anyone know if we can open the Define Fields window on a live database, or do we have to close everyone out of it like we do now? Can anyone tell me some info on this template. I'm looking for a 6 degree separation type of template in contacts/company relationship and this seems to have some nice options for assigning relationships of introducers and relationships - although I can't see a screen that displays contact within a company - which seems odd. I am quite new at this, but i have been trying to inserting files into a fm-file. I know about the "insert object" in the past versions but the problem with this is that the user have to manually choose "Open existing", "Show as Icon", "Link object" and so on. I know that if i use this there will be problem in the future. I would like to force the user not to do wrong. In FM7 i saw i new feature, "insert File". Great, i thought! But the problem with this is that if i insert a dokument (not link) in the db then i cant open it just by clicking on the container field (like insert object), i first have to export the document to the local drive and there open it by double…

Hi, I wasn't sure where to post this so apologies if it's in the wrong place/already been addressed elsewhere. I've just reinstalled Win XP for an organisation and put apps and files back on including File Maker 5. When their database is opened it takes longer to load than it use to - it opens up loads of forms (excuse the Access terminology I haven't used File Maker before). I increased the buffer size (or something like that) as suggested in the manual but this didn't make any noticeable difference. I have a question for the Filemaker whizzes out there. I am the owner of a graphic design firm who has recently taken on doing contract work for a local marketing company. We currently use a filemaker database to track all of our clients. I would like devise a simple solution for making proofs available online to customers through Filemaker 7. Well, now that I've had a night to sleep on it, here are my thoughts: I have to say I LOVE being able to pass parameters to scripts ... that'll save freakish amounts of time. Also, having more control over windows is great ... as are many of the new functions, though the usefulness of some I'm sure will not occur to me for some time. Now, on to the whining ... I was hoping FM 7 would be fully Unicode-savvy and able to display all kinds of scripts with minimal trouble. For example, I expected that the program would search the fonts on the system and use whatever is present to display utf-8 characters, as does TextEdit or Mail or most browsers. However, on importing tabbed utf-8 files containing a number of scripts, I find that each field has to have its font set separately. You can set one default font for a field in Layout View, but if the field then winds up with characters not contained in that font they will show up as boxes until you manually go in and change it. I have created several letters that are slightly different. Each of these letter is created in a different Layout and each is given a distinct layout name. I need to be able to at a glance in the footer of the letter decide which layout was used without having to look for the subtle differences. That could easily be accomplished using Status(current layout number) and Status(current layout name). I've created a field (using a calculation) in each of the layouts which displays that particular layout's name and number. I know you can insert pictures and quiktime movies, but would it also be possible to attach certain files like powerpoint or word docs, so that it works like a hyperlink and opens the file when clicked? The FAQ about FM Server 7 says that you can use the client for web publishing if you have no more than 5 simultaneous web users. Does that mean there are half as many users possible as with previous versions (10 IPs in a 12-hour period), or is there a different way of measuring how much traffic they can receive? It seems like 5 simultaneous is a lot more than 10 in 12 hours, but maybe the wording is just different. And is only Instant Web Publishing supported from the client? It seems that way from what I've heard. Anyone know what the education price will be for Server Advanced? $2499 is awfully steep, and people who shelled out for the almost unusable Unlimite…

I am a diehard fan of FileMaker, but you would think that by FileMaker 7 we would finally have the ability to specify the file paths to files when importing and exporting via a calculation. To add insult to injury, they now allow us to type in file paths in a text like field (even multiple file paths) when scripting imports and exports, but still provide no option to determine these paths via a calculation. You can calculate almost anything else but this. WHY!:? It seems intentional!!! This has got to be the most glaring omission of an otherwise great product! Multiple windows PER table. No more losing of a found set, heck you can have 5,10, 15 found set windows. OH, and you can even NAME your open windows (so you do not forget what the found set is!) Hi all, I'm a newbie here, but an FMP user since the early 90's. It wasn't "Pro" back then. Anyhow, I'd like to find out what the current state of FMP as it relates to eCommerce these days. I put up some databases using https, Tango and FileMaker years ago ('96), but haven't done any of that lately. As by topic, is possibile to disable the scrolling of a mouse-wheel in FileMaker5 to prevent that user change the record currently active? Does anyone know of a way to turn this dumb message off? There must be some mechanism to disable that message, which occurs if you press a key while on a filemaker layout but have not actually click in a field. The particular layout I have has no fields on it (a locked screen layout) and if a key is pressed that error message comes up. Filemaker then stops whatever its doing until the OK button is pressed. As a workaround, I'm using a third party software product called Buzof which automatically dismisses dialogs you specify. But, its a messy work around Cheers! Steve

I have been through a lot of posts trying to figure out how to display multiple record data on one layout, and now need some help. I have a database called Storage that has info on 50 storage units for rent, i.e. storage number, size, asking price, actual rent, id number of renter, etc. In addition each one has a status field which is one of four conditions: 1. Hey Everyone, I'm a little new to this all so please bear with me if my questions seem a little simple. I'm trying to create a database that will cover many different sets of data. For example, there is a group a, b, and c and they all have different values. I have been maintaining an FM database which is used by a mixture of Mac and PC users running version 6. The files are stored on a Mac Server although not using FM Server. I use a PC running Developer 5.5. I have been doing updates and all sorts, each time working on the file at home then emailing it back and have not had a problem. I have just completed a major update that necessitated creating some extra files purely for reference. In the same way I sent the files to the customer. When they copy them to the Mac server and then try to open them in each case they get the error "This file cannot be translated using this selected file type". I cannot work it …

All, We are using FileMakerUnlimited 6.0v4 with WebCompanion 6.0v2 on MacOSX 10.28 server. We are having problems with intermittent "unexpectedly quit" messages when accessed via web. I have been following threads about "unexpected quit" but have not found any "definite" solutions on MacOSX. Some have mentioned that they have found stability after upgrading to Panther. Would users of FileMakerUnlimited on Panther tell me what they found in terms of stability. Has upgrading to Panther server gotten rid of "unexpectedly quit" messages. Thank you, Ken

I have 4 databases affected: 1) parts.fp5 2) parts_list_items.fp5 3) quotes.fp5 4) quotes_line_items.fp5 I have a layout called "Quote Template" in parts.fp5 where I can list options that a customer would want. Each option has fields like part_number, part_name, part_price, etc. 15 options = 15 related records (basic stuff so far). I want to be able to click a button, "New Quote", that takes these 15 items and creates 15 new records in the quotes_line_items.fp5 database. I spent the morning putting together a series of scripts and subscripts that accomplishes this, but it relies on the Copy / Paste steps too heavily, and it's slow. Is there a bet…

Someone might have a simpler solution to the common problem of returning to the current record after performing a scripted find step. Here's my solution: 1. The dB must have two fields, a unique match field such as a serial number (RecordID), and a global field (gNum) 2. Create the relationship: "ReturnID" defined by matching fields "gNum=::RecordID" in the current dB. 3. Perform the following steps in the find script: Set Field["gNum", "RecordID"] Perform Find [Restore, Replace Found Set] # or whatever find parameters you need Go to Related Record ["ReturnID"] Any easier ideas?

I am going to get a new computer to run the server from and have as a kind of backup storage (which I wont be able to with file sharing off as I have just been informed as recommended for the server to run smoothly which is a shame). Our contact database at the moment holds about 50,000 companies and about 120,000 contacts maximum cocurrent users would be about 12 however we are getting a dedicated data entry person to update and expand the database so it could grow to 4 times the size. I am using FM4.1 on Win 2000 server with 6 win2000/win 98 clients running FM4.0 and 4.1 (updater 3) Had a problem with pictures which I was imbedding in DB causing DB to grow to 800mb. After advice from forum changed to import picture script with tick box "store only reference". DB dropped to ~20mb and everything fine (about 18 months ago). Noticed in last few months that DB had grown to about 400 mb. Checked to see that users were ticking box by changing active directory so that linked pics showed as "cant display XXXX.jpg" and for those that did show a picture assumed were imbedded and then deleted those picture. - Fine DB growing again so did a test. - cleared …

Excuse my newbieness here, but am new to FMU eccentricities OR am I looking at a larger problem? Client has installed FMU on W2k. FMU set for Web Companion and all Dbs are multi-user, open and hosted/published on server. I have noticed that some things that work in standalone FMP do NOT under FMU. 1) Have noticed that any button that calls a script which has ONE line to launch an EXTERNAL script in another open DB won't show rollover OR work. We have a few databases running on a Mac G4 sys 9.2 FileMaker 5. The databases are related, using portals: teachers, schools, projects, groups, etc. They are shared by the client using Open: Hosts. The databases have been set-up using Aliases in the Startup Items Folder. We have had difficulties in one database 'finding' a related database. Just last week I noticed that the server wasnt working I tried repairing, and restarting the server but to no avail (filemaker server 5.5 is on a win 2000 server machine) when I try opening a file on the server itself I get that a 10048 error code network error (which i didnt get b4). I have shortcuts to the files in the fmserver.exe folder so I can't understand why they aren't being hosted it was working a treat? Hi, folks! We have a terminal at our front desk that several people use on any given day. Some users leave the db on screen in FIND mode so it's ready for the next search when someone asks them a question, but they also update these records so do need to have EDIT ability. As a result, though, sometimes data gets messed up because someone starts typing before realizing they are not in FIND mode. I know the answer is to just tell folks to be more careful, but I'd like to hear if this is a problem with anyone else and if there are any tricks to minimize this. Hi Folks, Our IT folk are trying to move from a Mac OS 9 based FM Server (5.5) to a Mac OS X (10.2.8) based FM Server (5.5). In our initial testing when we try to serve one folder containing 12 files to the Mac OS X based FM Server, only 9 of the 12 files are available when viewed from a remote machine. Yet when I copy the same folder to my Mac OS X (10.2.8) mac, I can serve them via my single user FileMaker Pro (6) just fine. i.e. all 12 files appear when accessed from a remote machine. Being a professional Chef Instructor, getting into FM development arena is a new curve so bear with me. I have a developed a Professional Chef Association Branch Management system which seems to be working extremely well except for one particular little quirk. Why can I not get a simple CUT & PASTE to run inside kiosk mode? All we seem to get is a little HEX square. Also, is there any third party software out there that will give me the KIOSK effect but without that hideous black screen, with little or no access to other windows programs accept by use of the ALT-TAB keys? I have been using Filemaker for a number of years here at work, but want to take our department database to the next level. Until now, we have been working with one database that we either copy to our desktops, modify and return to the server, or sometimes opening multi-user mode, which has generally been extremely slow. I'm at a loss. Everything works fine with my DB when I'm using it on my Mac, but as soon as I try it on Windows 2000, certain layouts will crash Filemaker with this message: I have multiple files files in this database and the layouts that crash FMP are all contained in one file. The weird thing is that only 2 out of the three layouts in this file will crash FMP. One of those two won't crash unless I start to scroll down the layout. I want users to fill in text in a text field up to the bottom right edge, then have the box not allow any more characters to be typed. As it is now, the box enlarges as long as they keep typing. I need to do this because the text field appears on another layout that has space limitations. Is there a way to "lock the box" or even specify how many characters it can hold?

I have a database that lists the names of employees working for a company. Each record has their name and the room # they are in. If there is not a employee in a room the record will only hold the room #. What I would like to do is create a new layout in this database that has a picture of the floor plan as the background. I would like to be able to print this out with the names of the employees over the room they are in on the floor plan. What I need is an extra two fields. One for 'Order Qty' where the customer can enter required quantity, and the second where it will total the cost based on the price & Qty entered. Do you need to have filemaker server and unlimited together? We are running unlimited only.
