FileMaker Legacy fp3 and fp5

We have almost 40,000 books for sale in a fmp data base. I created a FMPcalculation field that generates the specific URL address for each title. (I upload that info to froogle to be listed there.) We have moved our inventory to a shopping cart site. I am under the impression that if I create a list of all our titles, linking each title to its URL and post it as part of the sitemap at the shopping cart site, eventually search engines like google will pick up the titles. I use Claris Home Page to create html. It would be painfully time-consuming to make a link for each title. I'm the Database Administrator for Dona Ana County (NM) and just recieved an old FileMaker Pro 4.0 database to convert. I have not been able to get into the the database because it is password protected and no one knows what it is. Is there an easy way to break the password? Thank you

I have a database in Filemaker 6 which contains the following files: "members.fp5" "events.fp5" "feedback.fp5" What I want to do is change the file name of the "members" file to "contacts.fp5" The question i have is, since there are scripts, calculations and maybe even some formulas contained in the "events" and "communications" files which relate to the "members" file, will they still work? Does Filemaker 6 know to automatically update the referred-to filenames within the dependent scripts when/if i change the "members" filename to "contacts"? Thanks!

I have the invoice set up with a portal for the line items. I've got the calculation for the total working fine. Until I try to print a statement of unpaid invoices. Since the total is an unstored calculation, the total doesn't show up properly on the statement layout - I just get the tax. The only way I could think of to accomplish the statement was to add another field: Total2, making it a lookup to copy the total. It even seemed to work when I did a Relookup, at first. Then that failed. There's probably some way to simply post the invoice to a separate database, thereby ending the unstored calculation problem, but I haven't figured that out yet. Any help ap…

I am very new to filemaker and I have just started working for a client who already has a database built in FMP 6. we are trying to share this database using the web companion plugin. When I first tried to enable the plugin, the app freezes. Somehow I figured out that If I try and enable the plugin when I have a database open, it works. However now, when I restart FMP, the app freezes at the startup window. The only way I fixed this was by enabling a Network Location with an IP of 10.10.10.10 and appletalk enabled. Is it possible to design a file that sorts like Microsoft Excel. I designed an Excel Sheet that consisted of 31 names of employees viewed vertical. The Excel Sheet is based on employees taking overtime and distributing it equally. When an individual employee takes overtime, I place a number in the column on the right of their name and perform a sort. After the sort is completed, their name goes to the bottom of the list. I have a windows xp machine that has lost it's tcpip network protocol in it's preferences settings within FM ver3. They can't open a database in multiuser. Other people on the same network, on differnt pc's, can but they have the tcpip protocal as an option where the problem user does not. It was working fine before. Nothing has changed on the computer. Hi: I have a G3/10.2.8 which I have installed the WSC and a copy of FMP 5.5 Unlimited to serve a working CDML shopper I have written and tested via web companion. The box is sitting on my switch with a static ip to my T1. I am trying to run this with the connector and apache so I can use ssl for credit cards, as opposed to just feeding it through web companion server. The WSC install went fine and let me add all 6 of my databases correctly. It is set to use port 591 so that the CDML doesn't conflict with port 80 on Apache. When opening remote hosts in FMP 6, the host name is not as specified in the Filemaker -> Preferences-> Applications-> User Name-> Custom. I have tried restarting Filemaker after changing the custom User Name but it still displays as the System name. Can the System name be changed? Any assistance will be much appreciated.

Hi, I have developed a contacts / projects / call tracking application that uses 14 files. I need 10 people in my company to have access to it. My plan was to run FM Pro 6 on a dedicated machine and to open the files on that machine in Multi-User mode (all my users have their own copies of FM Pro 6 on their desktop machines ...WinXP). However, I read somewhere that you can only have a certain number of files in your solution if you want to share it with 10 users without buying FM Server 6. Does anyone know what the limits are? Two users are sharing a database. When one copies text from a 12pt text field into a 9pt text field the copied text is properly displayed as 9pt text. When the other user does this it is displayed as 12pt. text, making it too large for the field (as it is displayed in the layout). The desired result is for the copied text to take on the formatting of the field it is being copied into. Both users are on Windows XP Pro. and both are using FM Pro 6. Any thoughts on what to look for? The problem machine does not have anything unusual about the keyboard or keyboard configuration. I have a client that relies heavily on Filemaker for internal database needs. Some of those files also serve as the back end for web pages. FileMaker Unlimited 5.5 is installed on an iMac 350MHz with 512MB memory. The files are on a QuickSilver G4 with FileMaker Server 5. Both machines are in a server closet at their site with a T1 connection to the net. Both machines are running OS X 10.3 Panther. There are 91 web files in the web folder on the Unlimited machine. I hope someone can help me with this! I use an old iMac running system 8.6 and FileMaker Pro 4.1v1. I have created a layout for keeping track of client's name, address, phone, fax, email, etc. and all of their payment information for any given year. At the end of the year, I just duplicate the entire group all at once so I will have a set of records to enter payment info for the upcoming year. Then, I go into Layout mode and change the heading to the new year, i.e. "2005". I just got the damaged file message and went to run recovery to extract recent data to import into a backup but the recovery command won't run. I'm able to run it to the point where I name the recovered file and save it. At that point, I get a very rapid dialog box that I can't read, then nothing. No message about blocks recovered, etc. I've run recovery before on files with no problem (under Mac OS and Win98) but wonder if there could be a problem running it on XP. A client of mine managed to attach too many high-resolution photos to a database...which then crashed. Now, I can't open it to delete the photos, and I keep getting the error message that Filemaker is "searching for more room in file" and then that "maximum file size has been reached." Indeed, the file is slightly over 2 gigabytes, which I know is the limit. What do I do now? I just want to get into the file and delete the images (and not lose the data). I tried to recover the file (in Windows), but that didn't work.

I recently installed FileMaker Pro 6 Unlimited on a client's server (Windows Server 2003, but shouldn't matter). The version of the software installed is 6.0v1 -- I have an old CD for the software. Obviously, there have been updates to FileMaker since then. But, when I visit the FileMaker web site, I can't find any updaters for FileMaker 6 Unlimited -- only for FileMaker 6 Pro and FileMaker 6 Developer. I have a coach who uses a runtime version of FileMaker Pro 6. It is a program that keeps track of player stats and weights and such. He has two files that say they are damaged. That I should use the recover command. Problem is, I don't have that option on the runtime version of the program. We use a Windows 2000 FM webserver and it works fine! But we have one problem: If a person on the console of the Windows FM webserver with the rightmouse button clicks the FM server does give an reaction on the web. Can we prevent this problem ?? Thanks any way for your reaction!

Would someone please point me in the right direction? I have 19 offices that all have standalone FM databases. I would like to collect all updates to their databases on a daily basis to a central, home office database. The offices only have dial-up internet connections. I am sure that solutions to this have alrady been worked out, and I don't want to reinvent the wheel. Any suggestions where to start looking for ideas?

Hi Team, I've got a client whose been using my application for the best part of a year. He is hosting it on a Windows Server, with FM Server 5.5 and using Exec Backup to his entire drive. We had a hard drive meltdown, so we restored his drive, and all the applications were working as before the harddrive went down (so we thought.) The restored FileMaker Pro databases aren't opening, i've tried using the FM Pro and recover and I've had absolutely no luck. The Message I get is "Invoices.fp5" was not created by FileMaker or is severely damaged an cannot be opened. I do this with serial numbers advancing with each new record and have never had any trouble. But I recently tried to have the same text added automatically to certain fields - defining it for each field - but the text doesn't show up. Any suggestions to fix this? We use a FM Calendar to transfer files to our website. Our current calendar ends at the end of Dec '04. How can I create/add months for 2005? I have tried all (I think) of the functions in drop down menus along the top of FileMaker... File, Edit, View, Records, Scripts - and I can't seem to find a way to simply start entering months for the calendar year of 2005. Anybody know how to do this? Hi, I have a really tough problem to try to solve. If someone knows how to solve my problem I would be really impressed and really happy. I have a database (FileMaker v6) in which all records have been accidentally deleted by a script (a bug in the script which occurs under certain circumstances), with the script step delete all records. The record count show 0 records. We've been using v5.5 (VL version) for several years on Windows 2000, the installation being handled by Novell's ZENworks (essentially just calls msiexec). This has worked flawlessly for many years. First, a complaint: Why, when i search for "corrupt and must be recovered" on FMI's knowledge base, should i get pages and pages of results that have nothing to do with anything? I know it's been said before, but AAARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHH!! Now, my question: I am trying to write up a manual and am looking for the exact wording of the message i will paraphrase here: "[FILENAME] is corrupt and must be recovered. I am a very part time Filemaker user who has not built a new database for years, and need help figuring out how to complete a project. I have a simple mailing address database that I want to use to print a form letter. I am creating postcards from 8 1/2 X 11 sheets that will be cut to give me four cards per sheet. I would like to print the addresses directly on the cards as opposed to labels. Is it possible to set up Filemaker to print the addresses from four different records onto the 8 1/2 X 11 layout? Hi I am currently working at a museum where they have a database with a layout and in the layout in a thumbnail of a picture. The picture is referenced to the file. But as I have been working on the database adding new information the file will not break the 14 meg barrier. Each layout is supposed to have info about the artifact along with a picture. Whats happening is I will import the file into the database and when close and reopen the file some of the pictures say that filemaker "could not draw picture file." In the attached file there is an example of what i trying to achieve. I am sure it has a simple answer too. But to date cannot solve it. I have a series of fields (non-rep) that display a running total. Each field has an adjacent field that i want to display a break down of each seperate length of the total length. Each adjacent field i have set it to a simple calc to subtract the previous field result from the current field result, thus giving a break up of that separate length. We are using Filemaker Pro server 3.0 with 3.0 runtime versions to access the server. It all worked fine up to Windows 2000 clients. We now have a Windows XP client and are no longer able to specify a host when opening a file (TCP/IP error message -10). The network preferences in the runtime client is correctly set to TCP/IP. My clients Filemaker 6 file takes a long time to open now. At least a full 60 seconds. It seems like it's frozen, but if you give it long enough to open, it eventually does. Could this be caused by too many related records? It doesn't seem like there is that much data in her db. She's only got about 500 records but each one has quite a few related records.

I've seen posts posing questions about importing data from Quark XPress files into FM DBs and formatting text with QXP tags for export to Quark documents, but does anyone know if there is a plug-in for FM or Quark or some trick to export photos (say from FM's snazzy photo catalog template) directly to Quark documents? Greetings all I have this FM6 db that I inherited. On an inconsistant basis, when the db_Reg is opened, records are missing. Example - at the end of the work day I will have 150 records. The next morning there will be 52. I have not been able to replicate the problem. Running the recovery command in FP will recover the missing data. Hi, Does someone know if it is possible to create a script to force Filemaker to run in low priority (like putting the priority to "below normal" in the task manager) My application is doing statiscical calculations and can run up to 30 minutes before finishing. Filemaker uses 100% of the processor, so when I try to keep working in other progs. while the Filemaker is calculating I have to put Filemaker's priority to "below normal" manually each time.

Hi, I'm running a script in filemaker6 where I hide the performed actions with the freeze window command. I only refresh the window at certain points in the script. This works quite well, but each time the window is refreshed there is an annoying flicker. I noticed this gets worse when there are a lot of fields on screen. because i want to test a filemaker application tat is based on sharing files through my network i need two different license packages. well i do have filemkaer 5.5 developer for OS X. i also have a Filemaker 5 pro for classic. Now i want to upgrade this 5 pro for classic to 5.5 for OS X. I've been running FM Pro 5 with no trouble until recently. we lost power while I was in one of my databases and now I get the following error when I do ANYTHING in FM. Instruction at 0x77805a10 reference memory at 0x00212000. Memory could not be "read". Click OK to terminate. I have reinstalled the program under several user configurations and the only one that runs is when I log into the computer as Administrator. Strange since I have administrator rights under all my id's. Other computers open the files just fine, so the problem isn't the database, it is specific to my computer. Any ideas? I have some Dbs I've had on the web for a number of years. Completely stable under 4.1, not quite as good under 5.0 Unlimited. Just upgraded to 5.5v2 Web Companion 5.5 v4 on a dual CPU G4 running OS X 10.2.2. Some of the Dbs are local, some are opened from Server v5.5 also running on a dual G4 under OS X 10.2.2. Every few days FMU just unexpectedly quits. Just pops up a dialog box that says that, no other hints or anything else in any of the logs. Anyone have any hints?

We are using 4.1 on 98 and it takes up to 10 mins to load. Now, before we upgraded PCs its was more like 1 min. We have also been told that we cannot upgrade our database to a new version. Any tips? =) THanks!

Is there any way of importing files from v5.5 to v6? I'v just upgraded to Mac OS X Panther, and while I can open files in v6 from v5.5, they don't look right. I'm having a strange problem with my opener files. For 95% of the users/computers it works fine. There is a seperate copy of the file on each desktop, it's not shared in any way. I'm experienced with other flat-file databases but a rank novice with Filemaker. Iv'e dusted off my copy of FMv4.1 and I am trying to get to know FileMakers features by working with the sample files that are included with the program. Several of the example template files include a "container" field, and the context suggests they are designed to accept data entry in the form of a photograghic image file. This post does relate to the other post i have, but it deals with another issue i have with it. If i have 6 Cal. Container fields and i want to set up a field (say item number). If the item number entered is 1 then all the 6 Calc. Fields will remain separate. But if i input 2 into the Item Field, then i want the 1&2 Calc. Containers both to give the same result. We've just upgraded to a Dual G5 Server and are using wrkstn installed versions of FMPro 5.5 (Education, Ministry Licenced)... sharing a file is no problem between Macs (eMac 1.25), but I have a problem when trying to share with both eMac and most versions of Windows... it tries to open up as a standalone version only and does not recognize that the file is already open and hosted by a Mac client when I open up a shared file in Windows there is no problem (except it looks like crap... read another post that suggested Verdona so will try that) but at least it opens... I need to be able to open this file up with sharing intact in both environments... any suggestio…

Hi Having major problems with file associations and filemaker pro 5.5 - we are currently running this with windows 2000. The users have to open the application first before they can open any .fp5 files. I have checked the associations via windows explorer and they look ok - any other idea's - please I really need help ::

We a 2 user license for Filemaker Pro 4.1 and have recently upgarded all of our computers to Xp including on of the 2 that runs FM 4.1. It has come time to update the other which actually has the database running on it using Web Companion to share it our via our internal intranet. However we are now geting a message after upgrading the FM server (second computer) saying that the maximum number of licensing has been reached and to close one other copy of the program. This didn't happen before, even with one of the computer running XP. Any Ideas?? Cheers, Damian

If you can picture a circle made up of a thick line. What i want to do is have the LINE that makes the Circle broken up into sections. IE. Instead of having 1 x Complete Circle, i would have various curved lines to make up one Full Circle. The reason for this is that i want to have, depending on the result of a Calc. field, each Section ONLY change colour according to three shade fields, dependant on the CALC. So therefore the Circle may be made up of 20 different curved lines (that are fields) that may be any combination of the three shades selected according to a CALC. field. Hi All I am having a problem with my system, it is currently set up to store student data, subjects studying etc. I have designed a script to allow a member of staff to create a new subject for a student, which works a new subject form is generated with the new subject on, a timetable is generated with the new subject on and then for some reason over night some subjects are vanishing. I am the only person with deletion rights and there does not appear to be any blank records and records are vanishing even when created individually. Is there a way to have multiple text colors in a calculation field? I know that text pasted into a text field preserves the formatting, so maybe a really ugly multi-pasting script is the answer? I didn't see any plugins that address this, nor any non FM7 solutions. Any ideas?

I have a field in a Filemaker 4 file defined as standard deviation. This field takes four other fields in the SAME record and calculates the standard deviation of these fields using the following calculation formula: StDev(pH sample 1, pH sample 2, pH sample 3, pH sample 4) This formula works fine almost all of the time. However, occasionally when samples 1, 2, and 3 are the same and sample 4 is blank, the standard deviation puts a "?" in the field instead of calculating the result as "0". To start with I am rather new with filemaker pro So maybe it's very easy but i'm just not seeing it. But i'm working 2 days straight on it. We are working here with a users database. You can search users and get information from it But we want an option to make a letter and you get some templates of the letter. And then the option te save the letter.. But the letter has to be saved in a different database linked to the user where it's sent to But also to multiple users. And the second table has to contain that information. I have a text field that logs information from a serial plug-in. The contents will always extend beyond the field, so there is a vertical scroll bar. The problem is that the field defaults to display at the top, while the log information is added to the bottom. Does anyone know of a way to force a text field to default display at the bottom (i.e. scrolled down), even while the user accesses other fields? Thanks!

I'm stuck with my databases, and I'm fairly new to this, so please excuse my naivity. This is my first post. I have a database with about 15 records. This database refreshes on a monthly basis to produce about 15 invoices, that's all good and easy. Each record is an "order/invoice" for a "client" and has 10 fields for any of the many of products they can purchase. The 10 fields are named "product 1" "product 2" etc to 10. These fields then typically have data typed into them describing the product eg. "newspaper", and usually have from 1 to 6 different or similar products per order/record. Hey, I have a contact management db were each record is given a unique auto-entered serial number. The serial number is used as the key for lots of relationships. If a user creates a record for Mr. Smith, with all of the address and phone info, and then has to create a record for Mrs. Smith, the first thought is to duplicate the record and then change the name, saving all of the time of address and phone data entry. The problem is that the serial number duplicates too. I've the ID set to be unique, and don't allow user overrides, but the duplicate record command creates two records with the same ID, and this has the potential to be fatal. Any ideas on how…

I just upgraded Mac OS from 10.2.8 to 10.3. Had problems, reverted back to 10.2.8, then finally back to 10.3. I back up regularly to 2nd drive using Backup and to CD using Disk Copy.. All files are OK but when I open FMP, all records entered after May 2004 are gone! That is a lot of work kaput. I went to restore from drive using Backup to find that file was the same May date. Assuming the problem was somehow related to the OS upgrade I grabbed the CD which was backed up before the change over and ti my horror, guess what? The same. Does anyone have any ideas? I have two DBs that are happily related. However, DB "A" will not lookup a corresponding field in DB "B". Both are text fields, so there is not a compatibility problem. I have followed Hoyle's rules a dozen times and it just doesn't work. I am a FM 6.0 newbie, so I'm figuring it's me or a problem when I installed the software. When I try to "relookup" the field, it tells me there is no corresponding field in the related DB, even though I have established the link. Help!!! It's driving me crazy.

Hi, this is very strange and only seems to happen in one of my databases. But the rolodex buttons to flip between records, and the status area counters seem to be broken in one of my databases. It's a database that normally goes on behind the scenes. When I flip to it after a while the rolodex slider bar seems to disappear and the record counter displays only 200 or so records, and the 'show all records' menu item is greyed out. There is over 30,000 records in the database. For example, I've just done a search for any records that have an id and it returns a correct found count of 33264 but the records number is stuck on 122! Even if I omit 1 record, and t…

I'd a text field in all records in FM4. I only can find the record by specifying the text up to a certain character in the string. When I specify it beyond that character, I can't find that record. But other records with same text field can be found. The text field is defined as "text with index if necessary". The text string is "Boc-LPYEGSLLLKLLRAPVEEV-HMP Resin".
