Hello I want to use a popup menu as the first field in a portal. But it seems impossible to select it. I have a "No value defined" whenever I want to use it. If I put another field let's say to enter a quantity before the popup then everything goes well. Is it normal or am I missing something? In the respect of the design of this layout I want to make a portal with only one field... the popup menu. Thank you

In trying to create a patient/disease database for use in my blood pathology practice I am running into problems. My intent is to have patient information and Disease/diagnosis. Selecting a diagnosis should bring up salient criteria/features of the disease for viewing, classification criteria and an industry standard diagnosis "checklist". Classification schemes vary with organ systems; schemes and checklists will version-change with time. Is there a way I can display a container that is within a portal row(a preview if you will)? I'd like to be able to display the file in a preview window in the same layout as the portal itself without having to run a Go To Layout script to see the file. Along with a nomenclature, this would aid in distinguishing which file is the correct container the user needs/wants to export.

Hi, I'm trying to figure out a way to show all related records which are related to a phone number. When the user enters the phone number, I want the portal to show the representatives or companies to which the typed phone number is related to. A representative is a person who works for one or more companies he may have multiple phone numbers (mobile, office, fax, etc) or none. The same thing for a company. So basically I've made 4 tables. Parent table is Account table in layout. Portal shows many "Apples" from my Child1 table belonging to only this account# with several other items , Oranges and Bananas too Apples, Bananas and Oranges, get populated in Child1 file, from a value-list from a 2nd Child table for all all counts When looking at 1 account layout, the portal are 3 apples of 5 other items How might I get an ongoing count of all the Apples, Oranges, Bananas when I relate to a different Parent account# I figure probably need something like a Count FOR calculation field. I'm having a problem with using filtered portals to display information that has different status i.e. - Not Received, Received, Finalized. I've set up a field on the main record itself to display the status information but I'm having difficultly in developing a relationship that will only display one type of status on each portal. Hi all, I have never run into this problem with web publishing and portal. The main problem I am running into is that assuming I have 2 table, 1 is the parent and 1 is the child table. You have a layout base on the Parent table with a portal to the Child table. In the filemaker client, you can create a new record in the Parent table, then create as many record in the Child table as you like. However, the problem I ran into is when I publish that database on the web. When you create a record in the Parent table and save (do not create a child record in the portal yet). I'm not sure if this is the correct place to ask for help with a custom portal sorting function, but I am running into an issue when using portal sort extreme that I cannot figure out. I've successfully implemented all of the portions of this custom sorting function, but for some reason when it comes time for the Evaluate function to be used on the custom sort_formula field, the evaluate returns a "?". Looking at the contents of the sort_formula field everything appears correct (contents of field are "." & field_name) and is set up as a global text field but the evaluate still fails. Can anybody help?

I have a little issue I am hoping someone else may have run into and solved? I have a Work Order with a portal line item list. I allow input to the line item list via the portal (layout context in the main Work Order). The portal rows have a button which brings up a new window in the same line item record (Context Line Item Table) with another portal of content choices for the line item. Buttons in that portal input the chosen content into that line item. The problem is I have a conflict because I am on the same record in the Portal on the Work Order page and in the line item content choice window. I've created a portal to a table with a container field. In this field I added a file reference as a test. I want to be able to have others access the file using this reference however when others try to open the file it gives them an error and has then try to find the file. I can open it just fine. The file is stored on our server. What am I doing wrong? I was hoping to use the container field as an electronic file storage system. Any suggestions?

I have a portal with 80 rows. When it prints, at the page breaks I lose one or half of one of the records When it goes across the page break, the record on the break either disappears, or only appears as the lower or upper half of the record in Preview and when printed. I have tried the body summary options, none of which seem to do what I need. What am I doing wrong?? I need to figure out a way to indicate that two records are similar within a portal. Within the portal records I have a specific field that where I want the value to be unique within the portal. If any of the values within the fields of the record within portal are the same I'd like to indicate that somehow or make it stand out. Does anyone have any suggestions?

It must be me that I am tired but I can't believe I cannot make a calculation field to change as the related data does! The only new thing to me is that I am working from data from a portal, but it shouldn't matter:THEY ARE NUMBERS FOR GOODNESS SAKE!. I use FM since the time it was claris. I am sure things got better with the new stuff, but this is basic and I am growing frustrated with 8.5 as it was a difficult migration (still is) from previous versions!

I'm simply trying to allow the portal text field to auto expand as moret ext is entered via browse mode. ie I have one row set for the view, but i want it to expand to two or three rows if the user enteres this much info - right now it disappears beneath the border, and I can't see it from browse mode. If I have a portal with all of the information I want to export to an excel spreadsheet, is there an easy way to do this? I was thinking I could make a special layout with all of the same fields... and run a scripted button on the portal that would "Find related Records" and display it on the other layout, and then export it. It would be nice if I could just export the portal records directly from the portal.... is that possible?

I simply want to know if there is any way you can make a portal auto-resize in function of the number of displayed records shown within the same portal. It is a feature that would greatly improve layout designs in general. Also: I have seen a portal that resize automatically when the window is resized... I think it was in "starting point" free solution. How do I do this? I tried the "anchors" in the object info, with no results (it only resizes horizontally upon resize... why not vertically?) Strange.. I have a portal that i am adding a 4th numerical field ... The field displays Yes, when i click on it i see my numbers.. Hi all, Relatively new to this but am slowly catching on. I've created a database to record a group of people and their involvement in a series of projects. I have a table of People, a table of Projects, and a join table of Interactions, which records the two foreign keys and information about each individual person-project interaction. This all seems to work fine, including the relationship between the three. The trick comes in when I attempt to divide the interactions into two categories. I've used FM over the years in a very superficial way. Now I'm trying to adapt one of the existing templates: Expense Report. I want add a field, Expense_Vendor (in order to identify the company the expense went to), to the Expenses table and have it show up in the portal of the layout "Expense Report". I've done that with no problem, but I'm not able to type into the field in the portal. I've tried looking at the other fields in the portal (Expense_type, Expenses_day 1, _day 2 etc.) to find what the difference in my new field is without any luck. Hi Folks! How does one right a script that would take data from a portal and compile it into a single list in one field for that one order? Hello, This is on FMP 6. Here is my layout: Header Fields Portal (set to display 10 rows) Fields Footer When printing with more than 10 records in my portal, it will only print out 10. How do I get it to print the remaining records in the portal to print out as a 2nd page? So with records with 12 records in the portal: So page 1: Header Fields Portal (prints first 10 rows) Fields Footer So page 2: Header Fields Portal (prints with the remaining 2 rows) Fields Footer (without sliding to fit all of it in 1 page)

I have a filtered portal that shows an account # & account name which works fine. I would like to allow the user to select a row, have the row selected highlighted to confirm his selection then insert the account # into the primary table. Here is something I'm trying to do which I've found out is beyond my ability to figure out today. I am creating a database to hold government acts and regulations for quick lookup. I have attached a copy of the joins. I added the extra ID's being carried through because a duplicate number problem across regs and acts and this solved it and kept them easier to track. However... I have a portal that filters rows based on various criteria. The portal row has a checkbox that a user can select which activates relationship so she just sees the rows with the check boxes she selected. Works great in single user mode, but what is the best way to make it multiuser compatible? So that one user can select some checkboxes and another user another grouping of checkboxes and they just see the portal rows with their check box selected? Howdy... Long time since I was here last, but hoping that one of the wizards here can help me nail this down. Anyway, writing a solution that creates a simple work order and it includes the usual entities like Contacts (or customer), Service (instead of product), Invoice, etc. The majority of the contacts come from a variety of Real Estate offices, they call and request an inspection service on a home they are negotiating. It seems that I would want a portal but when I try that I get multiple rows for each year and some strange data for each month. I have a portal on "student" layout that lists details of students' applications to schools (drawing from the "applications" table). Each row is one application. One of the fields for each row (application) tells me whether that school accepts materials by email with the value "Y". I want a field that gives the total number of Y's in the portal. Hi! I have a portal on my layout and the first field in it is a auto generated serial number. For some reason whenever I create a new record, the portal does not fill in the serial number on my first portal line. But if I fill in the other boxes and go to the next portal row, the second serial number will fill in and so on. Is there a trick to making the first row in the portal create this serial number? See attached screenshot. I'm showing a selection screen for the user to choose a portal row. The portal shows related donors based on the data relationship using a global field called "Filter Option 2" in the Organization record. The script that displays this screen sets Filter Option 2 to "" (blank". Organization/Filter Option 2 is the field that is used on the layout shown. However, no portal data is shown until I enter something in the Filter field and hit the tab key. If I key "" into the filter, or any other value, then it works perfectly. Not sure best topic for this problem, but I would like to modify one of the pre-built starter solutions in FM10: Home Budgets. I am adding dates and sub-categories fields to the different categories. Current problem is changing the name of the "LivingExpenses" to "MaterialExpenses" in the related tables that is listed in the "Portal Setup". The drop down list shows more tables than their is when I go to manage database, 2 verses 5 tables. Where do I find the these related tables? I think for all the pre-built in functions to work every occurrence of "LivingExpenses" must be renamed.

Hi, I'm building a invoice layout for printing and I would like to combine two field values into 1 field to reserve horizontal space for other fields. These fields are within a portal. The values are in a related table to invoice, the portal is showing these values ok. So I try to show the invoiceID within the portal: <> and it shows perfectly. Just not quite grasping Portal Filtering and Global Storage. Database consists of investigations records. Each record has a case number. Each record has, for ease of explanation, a to do list portal. When a to do item is completed, the completion date is entered in the portal. If it is not completed the date field is empty. I need a separate layout with portal that displays all the case numbers with non completed to do items. Basically show me which date fields are empty. I have 3 tables listed: 1.State Appts 2.Cert Footprint 3.Qualified Cert Footprint 1. contains fields "state" and "carriers" 2. contains fields "state" and "agent" 3. contains fields "state" and "agent" and "carriers" I have created relationships of each of these to a 4th table which acts as the portal window. Ok, I could use some suggestions for this. I have a very large repository of information spread out across 3 tables in SQL. In FMP, I have created 3 table occurrences of these sql tables and have defined relationships between the common variables. I'm having difficulty with creating a filtered portal on the criterion of age. I am trying to make a portal provide choices filtered by input from the user in fields of LastName, FirstName, Gender, and (DOB or estimated_age). It is actually working to filter by user input, but the age calculation is incorrect because it currently is stored. This is not a big deal for a 50 year old (the estimated age looks up +/- 20%), but is a substantial issue for a 14d old if the calculation is not refreshed for a few weeks. Hi, On one of my layouts, I have a text field in which you can search for a last name to see if it is already in the database (e.g., you'd type in "Smith"). If the name exists in the database, all occurrences of the name (Mike Smith, Derek Smith, etc.) show up in the portal below the text field. I am still new to this, but here's what I am looking to do: I want to have a IWP user go to a layout(portal?) and be able to help custom create a layout that they could then print out for their own use. Hi--we recently lost our IT person who had created out database. Prior to her leaving, we thought we were able to gather information from a layout where she had placed a portal. I am not familiar with programming, and am now trying to get the data out. Here is my question: She created a portal with date, type, description and other information fields located in a table. Did not see anything addressing this, so I'll ask. I have a portal that is sorted on one field (Field1). I want to compare the values (dates) in Field2 between the first and second row in the portal and determine which is the earlier date. Hi, I know i have seen this in the past but cant find it again. (urggg) A kick to the forum post on this would be appreciated... I have a portal displaying data with a DELETE button for each row. The problem is that the row directly after the last row of data shows the DELETE button, even tho it has no data in the portal row. Only the one extra row has this, the rest are blank as they should be. Hi All, I want to generate an email that includes a report either as a PDF or an excel file. I want the script to automatically generate the file name. Current date_Text specific to the file (Username etc). However, when I try to use the script step save a PDF or excel, I get an error message. I think it is how I'm trying to save the file. I use a set variable step to set $Filename to generate the name. I just want to set it to the person's desktop (Win/Mac). Help?

I am very new to FM, so please be patient with my ignorance. I'm trying to make improvements to a database that I did not build myself. So I am still struggling to understand some of the ways this database works I have records for "members" and each member has multiple location addresses associated with it. The multiple locations are entered into a portal linked to the members by a member ID number. I need to build a script that returns members locations based on an option selected in a drop down menu field that is part of the portal. Is it possible to create a portal that shows fields from related records in three different tables? If so, how? If not, how do I get around the problem? I have a many to many relationship between two tables, with a join table in the middle linking them. I need a portal showing fields from each of the many tables, and one field from the join table. Edit: Problem solved by creating calculation fields in join table to specify the data I need so they are all in one table. Then portal works perfectly. Apologies for bothering the electrons on this board.

Hello, I have a DB setup and running and have just started to use it live after much testing and tweaking. I have found a problem, that im not sure ware it come from so not sure how to look at fixing it. My Portal is displaying records that it should not. I have customers, each customer has systems and each system has inspections. The portal shows the inspections done in the past for the system selected for that customer. Good Day everybody! I have a "big" problem: in my database, one of the layouts contain a portal that display records form the same table. What I am trying to do is just to go to the related record in the same layout(on the right side of the layout I have the portal , and I want to display in the left side the information about the record that I will select) I created a "go" button in the portal that I set it up to a script. I’m trying to sort records using a more “natural” sort order. By which I mean that given a text field with records: 1 2 10 A B C etc. will sort to user’s expectations (in other words, not like this): 1 10 2 etc. There’s a great algorithm for this: http://www.davekoelle.com/alphanum.html However, implementing in Filemaker is problematic, to say the least. Prior to version 10, filemaker wouldn’t be able to iterate the calculation properly, and even in version 10 it’s incredibly slow. I’ve probably caused this problem myself. I have a Layout based on global field that hold a Yes value. I have a Portal on this layout that show records that have been selected in another layout by clicking on a Checkbox. The relationship is on these two fields. Now, it works. A user can select records by clicking the Checkbox and then go to another Layout that show just the they have selected records. Problem is, it only works in Portal. I need to print out this list and cannot seem to find a way to do it. I thought I would be able to create a Table Occurrence that would just show the selected records, by I get the full Table showing. Can someone offe…

Is there a way to do a Replace function that will update all records in a portal, without having to loop through the portal rows? I have an ancestry/progeny relationship going 5-deep (5 generations) that build on each other with a parent-child relationship from the prior generation. It uses a list calculation to match to. Can someone suggest how I might visually highlight the top three values in a scrollable portal? The portal displays 20 out of a possible 100 records. The "top 3" would be the top ones out of the 100, so at any moment, all or none might be displayed. One alternative I've thought of is to have a script sort the Found Set and individually flag the top three values. The problem is how to trigger the script when there are changes to records. Hello Another strange problem. I have a portal that display Lists of line item. Many prices come from calculations, When I open my file and look at the portal, the calculated result show $0, when I click on the field the price come back. The summary field don't display the calculated price until I click on it. I suppose it come from the unstored calculation that generate the items prices. Hello I have a portal that can be access from a menu on top of it, wich display different categories (to sort the items). In each categories I can add items into the portal using a script. I do not want to allow the creation of records from the portal. I prefer a script because it goes to the related LineItem to get some variable and sets some fields first. After much puzzlement I am asking for help. I have a portal that works normally in one tab and doesn't work in another tab in the same layout. I just copied and pasted into the other tab. I even pasted it outside the tab so I've got one copy in the tab section and one right next to it outside the tab and the one outside works (displays all related records) whereas the one in the tab only shows one record. Fairly new user here. Any way to do this? I want to display a small jpg from a web address in a web viewer, but have the viewer get the address from portal rows 1 through 6. Hi All, I have a portal that shows a list of Jobs. I have calculations under the portal that are based on the records listed in the portal. Each row / record in the portal hase a checkbox. When the checkbox is ticked the Job is included in the calculations, unchecked and that Job is not included. My problem is that the calculations don't recalculate until I click out of the portal. I have tried setting up a script trigger that goes to another object on the page, and I've tried having it refresh the window but it still seems like the only time it recalculates is when I cklick outside of the portal but not on any field or object. I have an Order Layout with a portal to an Order Line Items Table. Certain items are "kits" where there are other items that are members of the kit. When a user selects a kit and enters a quantity the Line Items portal automatically creates the new rows using the kit items information and appropriate quantities. What I want to know is if there is any way to prevent just those rows that are members of the kit from being edited directly. Specifically I don't want the users changing the items or the quantities.

UPDATE: Well this may be a first: after posting I disected 6 different postings and took a little bit from each (none related to containers) and made this thing work, or it seems to work anyway.
