<< :: Close I am not sure what or how this "piece of code in a Report we print, above means or find its explanation in FM.. was created on a Report Layout I am trying to understand.. It allows us to exit okay ON one layout or a report we print, our programmer added this code.. It's should allow us to close or quit out of a report when in a runtime program ( the X is greyed) When using Filemake, its no problem ( we click X) I am trying to understand exactly what i am seeing.. where in the documentation I find this function or what cha call it? New here, I have done pretty well so far with scripting and the relationships to get data back for reports. But now I have a request for something I'm not sure that can be done. We have data from a table that contains and air day (day of week, name), number of minutes, as well as a dollar total, and a month/year (actually it is derived from a date field but only filter by month/year). The report that we have working takes all the records for one month and shows what days of the week have how many minutes as well as a dollar amount from that record. As a trailing grand summary it totals everything individually, IE Sat=45, sun=60, Gross$=$xxx. But my boss w…

Okay, this ought to be a simple one, but I'm really puzzled. In layout Mode, I'm "Viewing" Graphical Rulers along the top and side, and determining how large a frame I want to use for a new database. I'm viewing the rulers in "Inches" at the moment, and I'm in 100% mode according to the display at the lower left of the window. So . . . why does an "inch" on the ruler measure only about 3/4 of an inch on my actual computer screen? -- I'm measuring it with a physical ruler. I note that Centimeters are similarly shrunken. If my client wants the window to be 12" wide, it seems I need to make it 15+" according to the ruler to fill 12" of real estate on my moni…

I am attempting to create a Help system using layouts. I am using one layout with several Subject headings and below them the respective help text. These headings also have object names attached so when I go to a particular object name, its suppose to go to a particular subject heading within the layout. so far, this is not working. It merely goes to the top of the layout. Example: Go to [layout name] Go to Object [Object Name] NOTE: Even if it was working, I haven't been able to figure out a way to use a variable field of some type in the second command to make it more flexible. Someone please help me before I punch through my monitor. I have created a table layout and enabled reorderable and resizable columns. Yesterday everything worked fine. Today none of the columns will resize. Even if I right-click and type in a resize value nothing happens. Please help. What is causing this? What update do I need to run? What registry value do I need to change? Who do I need to call? My columns are on lockdown. If I end up having to do a restore on this file will I lose any design changes that I have made since yesterday because they are extensive.

In our studio, we need coordinators and supervisors to get a good birds-eye view of all scenes per episode. Our notes for any particular shot vary drastically - some are just a quick sentence, while others are paragraphs. Sometimes there's one note and sometimes 12. When we add new notes for the animators, we hit an "add note" button - which basically creates a new record in our notes table so it appears in the portal we set up per shot. Is there any way to have T-squares off by default in layout mode? Or at the very least, to have the on/off status saved with the layout? I'll turn them off, close the file, reopen the file, and the T-squares are back when I go into layout mode. (these are hosted files, not local; not sure if that makes a difference)

I've been designing a filemaker pro 9 database on a mac and will be moving it onto a server soon. Yet, when I was testing my database on a windows computer I ran into a snag. I have a button that changes the view of the current layout to view as a table, but when I click on it I got a dialog box that says "Do you wish to save this change with the layout?"(btw, I am in browse mode). I never got it when I was on my mac, so... I'm wondering how to go about fixing it, because I don't want it to come up every time I click the button to change views. Thanks - Jeff

I'm working with a columnar layout with Sub-Summary parts for a city listing directory of business contacts. The layout displays contact information, grouped by the contacts' cities of residence. Unfortunately, I have several dangling city headings where the heading and Sub-Summary part occur towards the bottom of the page. I have a landscape layout where all content fits within the landscape border in layout mode. If I try to print it as a pdf or look at it in print preview, it cuts off a little on the right. Its not an issue of it trying to print in letter mode. if i view it in preview mode, i can see how the border is wider on the right than the left, but i don't see how to change that. in layout mode i can't change the width of the object body. Sometimes in layout mode the lines cut where the problem is, but when i select landscape mode in pagesetup, it goes back to everything fitting properly. what factoid am i missing here?

Is there a way to have a field determine which layout is displayed? I have a FM9 db that has a table with data that needs to be on the same table, but depending on the data, ought to be displayed using different layouts. As it is, if I have all records shown, as I scroll thru the records, they are all displayed on the current layout (of course). But is there are way to have a field determine the layout, so that when scrolling thru all records, each record will display using the appropriate layout? Thanks, Michael

I have a report which sub totals fees for events. The report is generated weekly. Certain clients are also billed a weekly consultancy fee on top of the event fees. The amount of the consultancy fee is added on the client's record as it is always the same - week after week. I have sub summaries (sorted by client) displaying the totals of a client's fees for the week. I can also display in the sub summary, the weekly consultancy fee (if the client happens to be flagged as such). What I can not work out is how to total in a Grand Summary part, the total of these consultancy fees. I have attached a screenshot. (I need the total to read £600.00 and £105.00 in the example.)…

Hi everyone, The boss just asked me to add a page total to one of my layouts and I said, "Sure Boss, no problem..." Then I dug into it and couldn't find an easy way to make it happen... : So, what I'm trying to do is total a column of numbers and display that total at the bottom of each page. Hi, I'm currently developing a system intended for a retail company. When generating the catalog, the system needs to have thumbnail pictures that are arranged from left to right (say, 5 pics per row) with 3 lines of texts below each thumbnail to properly indicate the item code, description and price. This is intended to be viewed and printed. Hi, I'm guessing there is an easy answer to this but I can't find it. I have a delete button on a portal row. The button is to the right of each row and looks just fine. Is it possible to make a merge field work like a "basic" field to do look ups? I have a "production company" field that i set up with a drop down so I can see a list of 2 fields: "prod co id" and "prod co name" (this is great) When I select one the "prod co id" is displayed properly and the "prod co name" displays and based off of the "prod co id" the look up perfoms and all my look up data auto enters. ( also great!) the only problem is id like to have information from 2 fields displayed in the "production co" field. Is it possible to create a subsummary report with fields from two different tables? I have two tables -- Customers and Lead Cost -- linked by year, lead source and month. I tried to create a subsummary report under the Lead Cost table that breaks down the cost per lead by month, like this: January 5 leads $100.00 $20.00 February 7 leads $200.00 $28.57 Etc. Total 12 leads $300.00 $25.00 I used a "Total Count of Leads" field from the Customers table for the subsummary Total, but it is not calculating the total. The Total Cost is a field "Total Cost Incurred" in the Lead Cost table. The only thing I can think of is that FM won't let you creat…

Hello out there. I have been having trouble with parts breaking across pages. The "Allow part to break across page boundaries" option is NOT checked in both the Body part and the associated sub-summary. The text in any body and any one sub-summary easily fits on one page. However, when there are multiple groups, the bottom part will sometimes break onto the next page. If it cannot fit fully, I want it to start on a new page. I tried to make sure that no field was touching a part boundary. Any other suggestions to avoid parts breaking across a page? Thank you in advance,

Hello, I'm working on a database for our school that tracks student assessment scores. Each assessment has it's own layout and table. The table structure & layouts of the assessments are pretty much the same. I can't combine them, because my boss wants it setup this way. Here's my question. I create Table 1 and Layout 1. I wish to duplicate both to Table 2 and Layout 2. How can I do this, without having to change each field on Layout 2 to table 2. (When I duplicate Layout 1 to 2, the fields still connect to Table 1). Is there a way to select multiple fields and point them to a different table? Thanks.

I have a layout which sends an e mail. Once an e mail has been sent it ticks a field in the record to mark it as sent. Is there a way to make this record (or if necessarily each individual field)read only if this box is ticked when this e mail is viewed for information, similarly to the way conditional formatting works. I have an Access background and I'm trying some solutions in Filemaker V9. Table and List view in Filemaker seem very limited presentation wise compared with Access. Is there a way of presenting a recordset for either data entry or viewing in Table form in any part of the Window, say for example in a Tab Control? A Portal is fine for related records but I can't seem to display it for a single table and allow data entry. Any help or suggestions is appreciated.

OK I am DESPERATE! I have attached my empty file in hopes someone will show me kindness I have created separate tables, booth sales, other sales, and cancellations. The data for each of these gets entered into a separate portal. All records are designated by year. No matter what I do , I cannot create a report that will combine all and breakdown by year and salesperson. I have twisted and turned and as you will see have created summary fields that are not working when shown in another table, and I can't figure out what its pulling. I have a food ordering database for a school. There is a student table and an orders table (one to many). I need to create food tickets showing the student name and the orders they have for a given day. I'd like them to look like tickets that the kids can bring to the servers. So far I can't figure out a way to make reports print in two columns. Nor can I figure out how to keep the body (part with the food orders) from splitting across pages. HELP! I know this may seem odd to some people, but im trying to get a date field to be quicker for data entry.. Ex instead of typing 01/01/01 as a date you can type 010101 and Auto-Enter an auto enter calculation will format it to a correct date format of 01/01/01. My Calculated auto entry is: Case ( Length ( datetest )=6 ; Date ( Left ( datetest ;2 ) ;Middle ( datetest ; 3 ;2 ) ; Right ( datetest; 2 ) )) Pretty Simple and straightforward... but the problem is I always get errors of wrong date format. I'm using FM 6.0 v2. At my high school we have a Driver Education file stored on a server. A secretary accesses this file from her desk and I access it from home. Everything works good except it opens in the wrong layout. In Preferences/Document/When Opening I have the "Switch To Layout" box checked to the correct layout, but it opens with the wrong layout. I also wrote a script to get to the correct layout and in Preferences/Document/When Opening I checked the box "Perform Script". This doesn't work either. Any ideas?

Hello, I regularly use custom colors on my layouts. Each time I exit the program, I lose all of the custom colors I had previously set. Does anyone know if there is a way to save or store these custom colors between sessions? It is so frustrating to have to set them all up each time I open FileMaker. Thanks!

Hi - I've been happily using various features form the Scriptology Theme Library since I bought it last year, just by trail and error and have found it very useful. One area I can't seem to grasp on my own though is how to achieve the nice gradual color changes on graphical layout objects like I see in many of the Layouts. I note that when I copy an object to my solution and re-size it vertically to fit my own design, I get the hard bands of color. Similarly, the menu of 'Gradients' appears to be a really useful tool for, I'm just guessing, overlaying a light/dark transparent object over a solid-colored object to achieve that nice "grading" of color. Hi, I have a hosted database. Some users can access it through the network and some through the web. I want that after users login go to the first layout. I have set up the order of the layouts but apparently it only takes effect on the layout pop-up menu. I want that the first layout users see is the first on that pop-up. Is there an easy way to make filemaker omit a line in the body part of a report if the fields in that line are zero or empty, so as to avoid empty lines? In omnis, you can set the report field attributes to make the relevant report line non-printing if the value of the field in question is zero, but I can't see any equivalent method in filemaker.

This topic is so basic I'm embarrassed not to have found the answer in old posts or elsewhere: Is there a way to have a header when in form view, that stays on the screen when you scroll down, the way it does in list view? I have a layout that I don't want to be viewed in list view, with a lot of buttons and some other stuff at the top, and which is too big for my monitor. Hi everyone... My layouts contain several buttons with scripts. Most of the buttons open a URL or a file on a server, or start a specific search within the database. Everything works fine, and what I really like is that most of my scripts are not attached to a "real" button anymore, but to any kind of object, most of the times it is a simple field. For example, instead of having a little button that says "Go to full record" next to a name, the user simply clicks on the name and the new window with the person’s full record opens. So, the main menu for my solution is just that: a menu. The user clicks the button to go to the database he or she needs. The table for the Main menu naturally has 0 records, which is fine. The problem comes with the user clicks somewhere other than on a button. They get the windows "WHUM" and an error saying the action cannot be performed because the required table is missing. My thought as a solution is to make a script that runs when the main menu is opened. My question is actually very simple. I've got a word processing document in a word processor. It contains text. Some portions of the text have bullet points. Hello everyone. I would think that this would be a very common task, so hopefully someone will know how to do it! I have a Firstname and a LastName field (so that records can be sorted by last name) and I want my layout to display a condensed full name without a bunch of extra space between the names if the first name doesn't fill the entire fixed-width box. Easy enough; I can use a calculation field or a merge field, right? But, I also want the name to be editable. How can I do both of these things? Thank you!

I have one file with two tables -- each with a listview layout of records including a header and body. Both have the same types and number of fields. Both sets of fields come from the current table. When navigating to the listview in table A, (200 records) the body displays/refreshes quickly (less than a second) and smoothly downward from row 1 to bottom of screen. When navigating to the listview in table B, (29 records) the body displays/refreshes slowly (about 3 seconds) and downward in a row-by-row cascading fashion from row 1 to bottom of screen. Hello I would be eternally thankful if someone is helping me out on this: As the title line says I need to print on partially covered label sheets. Any Avery sheet for that matter. This is to archive film raw material, which is managed in the database. I understand, that for this I'd need a script. I have a layout I use as the front page of the database and is opened with a script when a user logs on. It only has one record and is mainly used as a home page for the users. There is a calculated field on the page but this is unstored and just shows the logged on user. It also has a portal on the page related to that user. It works well (So far). The problem I have is that this database is on a network with a number of users. When more than one user is logged on they get an error message saying that someone else is accessing this record. I thought this was going to be an easy task but apparently not: How do I remove the Title Case attribute from a text field? While in Layout mode, I highlighted the field (named Title) via the Format->Style->Plain Text menu choice, but that didn't work. Next, I wrote a script (see attached) but I think I botched it in the highlighted instruction therein. I have about a thousand records to change so doing so manually would take too long. I've just realised that things are not going as I expected. I'm trying to add a number of portals to a main form to give me an overview of all my orders, jobs accounts etc. regardless of what customer they relate to. I'm wondering what to base the main layout on as this does not actually hold any fields - it's all portals but it's relationship seems to be causing a problem.

I am trying to line up a heading with 3 title columns (the part is a Title Header). I have all the columns aligned the same at the bottom (I used the alignment button), but when I go to Preview Mode one of my titles is way higher than the others. The other 2 are lined up perfectly, however, in Layout Mode all 3 are lined up perfectly. Am I missing something? Thanks, Michelle

This will be a dumb question. When I print in filemaker my PC always says from "Page 1 to 1" instead of having the button "All" clicked. When I change it it stays changed, until I relogin to Filemaker. A Page Setup script step before printing has no effect on this. Where does one specify what "pages" of the Printout should be printed by default? Thanks spongebob. Filemaker 8.5v2

Hi there! I'm trying to add a "written communications" module to my database, allowing me to produce personalized letters and faxes. However, I can't seem to work around the fact that some texts are short (1 page total) and others will be longer (2 or more pages). Is there a way to define a "flexible size" for the bodytext field in the letter layout, without having to let my users tamper in layout mode themselves? Or maybe a workaround, that first calculates the number of lines required to print the full text and then decides on what layout it needs? Or - if at all possible - get FMP to open an MS Word template and print the lot from there? I know…

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm I have a Text Field called "hello". I type some text into it. On my printlayout I have a Textbox with <> in it to print the fieldcontents (Plain vanilla up to here...yes). That Box is fully justified so the left and right so the edges look nice incase theres lots of text. Problem: Sometimes, when I type some text like a phrase with the string R-01122 at the end into the Textfield, the R is cut off on the right hand side from the printout (as well as on the layout one can see it). I'm going nuts here -- I've got a simple little database I use for my own purposes, and it's real minimal in terms of function -- just a few layouts and sometimes a second window open. Somehow I tinkered with the windows, maybe doign a little layout work, or navigating to a different layout with the second window . . . and now when I open the File, the main window is hidden behind the second one and I have to drag it out and resize it. When I create layouts on my Mac using Custom Colors I seem to have complete control. When I enter the same values on Windows, I get totally different colors, and once hue, saturation, and brightness are set it seems to force the RGB values rather than accept my input. The color differences are greater than might be expected just due to different monitors. Anyone have a solution to matching colors across platforms? Is there a basic difference in how color is managed between the two operating systems? Thanks in advance.

I have a PDF (of a WORD file) that is 13 pages long. It is the manual entry form for the database, for those people that do not have, or are uncomfortable with, or cannot afford enough entry stations to support the user data collection community. Print and complete, with data entry later. The DB uses multiple layouts and tabs within the layouts to get all the data collected. In paper form, this translates into different presentations (popup menus on paper are tough :-) so printing the on-screen input layouts is not practical. I manage a school database accessible to non-technical users. The database opens to an 'entry screen' with buttons for various activities. I would like the entry screen to display some basic information, such as current enrollment by classroom, etc. If I script a report to summarize the data using summary fields, I realize I need to display in Preview--but then the buttons don't function, and I don't get to use the full screen width, just page width. If I use GetSummary(), I can't figure out how to see subtotals for all of the classrooms--just the total for the classroom of the currently selected record. Is there a way to do this? Thanks!

Greetings, I have a layout with a main portal displaying XX rows. Each row, after being populated has an "amount" field that is the result of Price*Qty calcultion. I also have a summary field "sAmount" which is a total of "amounts". To display this summary total I have been placing a one row protal directy under the main portal in what would be a logical place for an "Order Total." This works but the trouble is the summary field will not display a new total (after a new row is created, or a row is modified, etc)unless I "click" into the summary field essentially refreshing the field. This little quirk has been bugging me for the longest time, and I think it's time I figure out how to stop it. When opening some files, if I try to resize or move objects in layout mode, they seem to snap to a grid. When I create new layouts, it doesn't do this. Instead, it just resizes or moves by pixel, which is the way I want it. Someone please tell me this is a setting you can turn on and off, and if it is, how can I turn it off? Thanks a lot.

Here is a quickie, How can i bring the tab order to an end so it does not go round and start again at tab 1. I remenber reading something about hiding a field as the last tab, ive tried it but either the field accepts data input and makes a mess or i have it to not accept data and it shows an ugly "you cant put data in here" message. ? On the same subject, but less important is there an easy way to tab onto the next "tab layout". i cant for the life of me think why Fm uses the same word for 2 concepts within its package but i think you get the idea. I've recently added a field to my database which is calculated from two already existing fields (let's call them field A and field :. I added the new field to a layout, but it (the new field) comes up empty in all records. It will populate itself if I make a change to either A or B, but I'd rather not have to do this for every single record in this layout. Does anyone know how to reserve access to a Layout/Tab based on the account? I've seen it done in Job Pro Central, but I do not know how to do it. I want only certain individuals to be able to access a certain tab on a tab control and deny access to everyone else... this may get messy. Has anyone developed a navigation interface that looks like the one on iTunes or Mail? Menu items on the left that open and close, revealing or hiding sub-menu items? Items contain graphics and text I tried with a global image container, pics of the different menus, and a lot of buttons on top. It works fine but I can't make my selection remain highlighted. Is there a way to switch to table view that ignores the font sizes that are set in layout mode? In MS Access you can set the font size for table view. I know you can create you own list layout, but you then loose movable and resizable fields which are handy.

I want to create a letter to my clients that, as an option, will list any Invoice records with open balances. At this time, when there are no invoice records for that client, the layout in preview mode is blank. Is there a way to have the layout display the other content even if there are no invoice records? FYI - I have an invoice layout that optionally lists checks written on behalf of the client. This layout displays the other content even when there are no check records.

I've got a layout in which I have a portal which has two different checkboxes. All of the fields on the layout are supposed to be readonly. I unchecked both enter in browse and find. However, when I use this form I can uncheck one of the fields but I cannot check it. The other field cannot be modified at all. I've also set the layout without automatic updates but that only means I get a reminder to save the changes. What is allowing this to happen? Both fields have value lists which are identical (as far as I can see) with one value of "Yes". What am I overlooking?

I have recently downloaded some sample files from this forum and have noticed that the field names do not display in the Layout Mode. It appears that when in Layout Mode the data from the active field is being displayed. In order to see the field name I must double-click on the field to display the Field/Control Setup window. Any clue what is going on here? Is this possibly due to the original file being an earlier version of Filemaker. I am using Filemaker Pro 9. Can this be changed? Thanks for your input

Hi, I'm extremely lost so any help is muchly appreciated. I was getting along fine producing reports by printing the layouts in filemaker as pdf. But now my reports are getting more complex, with different combinations and headings etc, I figured, why not produce a caculated field, that when exported, will produce an html version of the report. The only problem with this is headers and footers (as well as footer on the last page - for totals, and making sure group headers aren't on their own at the bottom of each page). I'm completely new to Filemaker and I'm using it do build a database for my nonprofit organization. I created a "home/start page" to help me easily access my layouts. This "home page" consists of 4 buttons which link to the 4 different layouts that I have. 2 are data entry layouts (donors & donations). The other 2 are reports. On the top right corner of each of my 4 layouts is a button which links back to the "home page" layout. So after creating this, it does everything I want it to. I am having a slight issue with printing in table-view. Currently I am displaying data from about 20 fields and originally Filemaker would cut off some of the viewable fields. At the moment to correct this problem I have shrunk the text so that it will all fit onto one page. I am wondering if FileMaker offers options similar to excel that allows the user to define the printable area, so I don't have to worry about resizing. Also related to this topic, I'm wondering if I can word-wrap in the table view fields. This would greatly reduce the need for space. Hello, I have a letterhead graphic, created by a screenshot, which prints clearly out of Preview (a std. Mac graphics app), but which gets very blurry when printed out of FileMaker, either as an object on the layout or as a graphic within a container field. Hello, I got a table firmen with a primary key pk_firmen, and a table kontake with a primary key pk_kontakt and a foreign key fk_firmen_kontakte. Each company (firma) can have more than 1 contact. Hi List, I want to print a page with a single field repeated in columns accross the top of the page (Field A in eg below) and values of other fields (B-D)listed down the columns. This is easy enough with a Form in Preview mode created with columns but I want the field names of B-D only listed once in the first column. What I get is the field names listed in each column. I have a line items file containing products. Each product is in a single category. I have a report which shows how many of each product is in each category. The report is sorted, descending, by the number of products. Some categories have around 100 products. Is it possible to get a top ten list of products in each category? The only way I can think of to do this is to export the report to a different file and loop through the products in each category using a variable 'counter'. Is there a better way? Thanks, ft.

Hi all, Got a simple question ] In calculation field, I can select the value and copy it. When I want to change it, the pop up show "This action cannot be performed because the field is not modifiable." That's good. So, can this one also be applied to regular "Text" field? If I have a "Text field" and I want to lock it (prevent user from changing the value), but user can select the value (copy and paste) for searching or finding purpose. Is this possible? I tried to unclick "Allowed field to be entered: in Browse mode" and try to select value inside a field and it cannot be selected (fully locked). I have a layout (lst layout) with a button called "Preview". I want the script for the "Preview" button to open a new window, go to another layout (2nd layout) in that new window and go into preview mode for that 2nd layout in that new window. I can get the new window to open and get the new layout (2nd layout) into preview mode successfully. The problem is that my first window always changes to the 2nd layout layout (the one that is previewed). I have tried numerous combinations of script code without success.

I've created a runtime application for which I created the help files as a small website accessed locally. The problem is (mainly on XP, not on VISTA or the MAC) when the user clicks the help button it will not launch the browser. Because the help files include narrated video help files, they would not fit properly in the internal browser. This is probably a security setting that preventing the browser from launching. Does anyone know what and where that setting can be changed. As I stated earlier, it'a mainly on XP and not on all XP. There is no rhyme or reason. On some XP SP2 it works on others it doesn't. My database is set up so that most of the data entry is done with the num pad. I have all the fields set up to move to the next field when the Enter key is pressed, but for some reason, I can't press FMP buttons like that. I'd like to use it for data entry. The user enters the numeric data, hitting Enter each time. When finished, the last time they hit Enter, it goes to a button. They should then hit enter again to push the button (starting a script), and prepare to enter the next record, but I can't make FMP press the button with the Enter key (the Return Key works just fine). It's not like it goes to the next field (like Tab does) either. It just, well, stops…

I have a basic field layout that I want to put a drop down box that shows certain scripts in it. I have say 30 scripts in the scriptmaker but only 5 that i use alot. So I would like these 5 scripts in this drop down box. So when I want to perform script 1 on record 99 I can pull down script 1 from the list of 5 scripts.
