Importing & Exporting

Getting data in and out of FileMaker.

  1. Started by LabMonkey,

Is it possible to export a repeating field in a record to a text file with carriage returns separating each entry? I have tried all of the export options that come with Filemaker Pro 8.0, but none of them can generate this format. They are all based on other formats, and even the .txt export can essentially only do a comma or tab delimited format. What I have is a layout consisting of a field with a two line text header and a list and a repeating field of 96 samples. I need this exported to a text file in a format using carriage returns so that it looks like this: LX100IS Patient List [Accession#, Dilution Factor] 00000001 00000002 00000003 000000…

Hello, I am fairly new to FileMaker. I work in the Prop Shop in the Theatre at school. We are using FIleMaker to catalog all of the props we have and put them into an eaiser to find system. One thing we would like to do is take a picture of each prop for its entry in the database. Is there a way I can hook my camera up to my computer, take a picture of the prop, and have the picture immediately upload in filemaker to add information and comments? Or do I have to take all of the pictures and then import all of them into the database and then go back through all of them and add their information. Thank you for any help David Mims

I tried the export with layout style option checked but it did not work. Although I have a feeling there is no way round this I am wondering if someone could prove me wrong.

  12. Hello folks, due to a update of my application, I'm using an update script. Now there are different tables which must be imported into one. I wrote short scripts for each "one-table", which are called by the updatescript. These script do some easy steps: ... Import data ... loop ... set a new field to a key(type of data) value ... end loop ... import data from next table ... set a new field to a key(type of data) value ... end loop ... I expected that FM treats the newly imported data as a current found set and only works in the loop on the current found set. I tested these scipts and they worked fine. Then I tested the co…

I am working on a MacBook Pro but the database will need to be cross-platform compatable. I cannot find a way to insert the actual sound file into FileMaker. It will only link the sound and if/when the sound is moved, the record loses it. I need to "embed" the sound into the database (as oppose to linking) to ensure maximum movability of the complete database. Recently I decided I wanted to join them together with one script so I could hand the file off to someone and they could get push button results. So the method I chose was to try to have the second file import directly from the ODBC location. When I did this the date that it imported seemed to change format resulting in junk. In the first file the field is set as date and the value will read in automatically in the 20040323 format. In the second file the field is also set as date but it will c…

So far, I can search for a single record and export it as a Tab-Delimited file. But when I import it to Entourage, it does not seem to appear in the address book. One thing I noticed is that the defining fields (i.e. work phone, main address, first name) which are usually in the first row, are not in the exported file. It just has the info itself(i.e. 123-123-1234, 123 Cherry St, etc). Any suggestions??? Thanks!

Apparently, Filemaker 8.5 (and prob. 7 and 8) will always import all records regardless of the found set when the source file has more than one window open (or is closed). As this is a single file solution, there will always be at least 2 windows open when I perform an import from another table with a found set. This in effect imports all the records. I've got a problem. I just performed an update for a client and out of 947 customer records, 37 will not import because of errors. Additionally, Filemaker will not generate an import log file so I can't find out what the problem is (the one time I need it to ) Here's what I've tried so far: I've tried recovering both files. I've tried FileMaker Pro 8 Advanced and 8.5 Advanced. I've restarted everything. I've tried exporte to and importing from .tab , .xml, etc. and get the same errors. I've reviewed the data to look for commonalities and found nothing obvious. Does anyone know how to get FileMaker Pro to generate import logs? Before I r…

The users are 1/3 Mac, 1/3 Windows 2000 and 1/3 Windows XP. I could get the file preview to display in Windows 2000 and Mac by using a Windows 2000 PC to drag the file from it's folder on the network into the container field. The first page of the file then displays as a preview on the Mac and Windows 2000 PCs. BUT on Windows XP the preview doesn't show unless you click on the container field. Then the file hangs up for about 3 minutes until the preview displays. Way too slow to be functional. This happens wh…

I converted from 6.0 to 8.5 a solution that contaned several container fields. The container fields were storing files like word and Excel. When I did a direct conversion of the file to FMP 8.5 the container fields sometimes ended up with unknown objects. I know QuickTime is needed for the image but the problem here was the whole file was missing. I found for some of the smaller files I had with container fields I was able to export records to a FM 6.0 file and then import to FMP 8.5 and they were fine. However with the larger files I found only the following to work: 1. Export the records in small groups 2. Then convert the records to FileMAker 8.0 3. Im…

My script is very simple -> Export Records [Restore, "issue selection report.csv"] Other users can use File > Export records OK, but aren't successful using my button. Grateful for any help Carol

Rather than re-type all Customer info, I'd like to simply add acustomer number field to Filemaker and have it lookup the name, address, etc. in the SQL Database based on that customer number field (Select SQL.name from SQL where Filamaker.Cust_No = SQL.Cust_No). I'm developing an application in Filemaker 8.5, currently for Windows but ultimately cross platform. When using the Export function under script control, it is possible to set the file path where the file is to be stored. I'd like to be able to drop the file (for example) onto a user's desktop or into their My Documents folder, but the path will vary from user to user. Is there any way of including system variables like the Windows login name so that you can get to the correct user desktop or my Documents location? The alternative is to use Troi's File Plug-in which can return the path to certain system files, but I'd prefer not to introduce this complication un…

They were using FM5 before I came in and had test information (scores, dates, etc.) in repeating fields (score, date issued, date rcvd, etc. each was an individual repeating field). Hi, we have about 20 clients using our FM solution and the list is growing, all clients connect remotely to our dedicated server. Depending on fixes or new aditions, we do updates about 3 times a month. But the process is so tedious. We have two files, the interface file (layouts and scripts) and the data file, so at least minor fixes are easily updated by just replacing the interface file, but when there is a change in the data file a full update is inevitable. So far we don't have an automated data import into a new version of our solution, but as we speak I'm working on a system where a current solution would have a script that would export all data into a temporary da…

In the attached example, with access to the Salary and Hourly Rate field restricted for the "User" privilege set, if that user tries to run an Import of that file, the stored field mapping is lost for the Name field with was created after the Salary and Hourly rate. It is understandable why this would be. Since those two fields aren't visible, they shouldn't be selectable in the Import dialo…

  85. MS Access has this function of creating "fixed field sizes" and exporting with "fixed width",can this be done in FileMaker? (Using FM6.0v4 but could upgrade if needed) Problem: I need to create a fixed field size to Export into a COBOL system. 90. Hi everyone, One of the processes I have to manually do prior to importing data into one of our solutions is to clean all the commas out of a tab-delimited file. Currently, I have to open the file in a text editor and replace all commas with a space, and save the file. Then, FMP can be used to import all of the data properly. I'm trying to automate as much as I can in this process. I'd like to be able to "pre-import" the text file and then use FMP to search for the commas and replace with a space and then use the resulting data as the source of the import into the actual data table. Might this be possible? Thanks for your help! Mac Hammer

In my company, we currently have about eight files that were created to do different things (print reports, current order status, shipping tags, envelopes, etc). Specifically, it does not recognize the found set of files, but instead imports ALL files from the source table! Any idea why there is this crucial difference between the .fp7 file and the .usr file?
