    I am testing a small amount of data in a FM file on a 2009 MacBook Pro with 4Gb of memory and a 128Gb Solid state drive. The file was 60GB on 9/18 and is now 155.7Gb. I have been entering very little data during this time. I have been working with this file for over a year and a half without anything like this happening. Because I am not entering much data the file has been around 50 to 60Gb for the last year. The slowness occurred at during this same period and I am not talking about slowness regarding processing data. When I make the window larger by dragging the lower right hand corner, it takes approximately 2 seconds to complete. I have run FMDiff to see if…

    This question might have a really simple answer but i just can't seem to find the answer by myself. I have a database called phone file which has a bunch of phone numbers we use at the office. Every time someone opens the phone file the window in which it comes up in is really really small. Everyone always has to re size the window so that all the phones are viewable. Is there a way to change the default size in which the database pops up in?

  3. Hi, Is it me or we cannot do conditionnal formatting based on global variables? Check the attached file, it's quite simple. I want to use two buttons to navigate through tabs. The buttons call the "gotoObject (objectName)" Script which set the global variable $$currentObject to the destination object name. The conditionnal formatting must match the $$currentObject.     I'm having a problem with the webviewer, in that I cannot see anything on it at all. This just started happening, and I have no idea why! Even if I go in and hardcode the URL, to something like www.filemaker.com or a local file path, nothing happens! Not even a file not found, so I'm disinclined to think it's a connection problem.     Hi, I am trying to create a simple inventory tracking solution for our shop. I have started with the template provided in FMP9 and working from their. i have added quantity fields for a count of how many items i have. Id like to create a layout which has 3 (or more?) colums. The colum would populate with all the items in a catagory as selected from a drop down list of categoriesavailable at the top of each colum. (If i dont select a category, no list will apear in the colum) Beside each item in the colum would be a field for a number. This would be the quantity of items i take out of inventory of that item.   10. I am perplexed! I have a few layouts to print CD Jewel labels from a container field. These layouts differ in the rotation of the container field (which holds main content of the case label). I.e. the field is not rotated on one layout, and in another the field is rotated 90degrees depending on how the graphic was scanned. The problem is that on the 90degree rotation it is drastically cropping the edges of the graphic! (See attached screen shots.)   13. Good Day everybody! I have a "big" problem: in my database, one of the layouts contain a portal that display records form the same table. What I am trying to do is just to go to the related record in the same layout(on the right side of the layout I have the portal , and I want to display in the left side the information about the record that I will select) I created a "go" button in the portal that I set it up to a script. The script will just use the filemaker function "Go to related record", but is not workiinnngggg.....not even "Go to Record" is not working! But I have a layout that shows records from 1 table and include a portal that displays related records from another table. I want to filter this related portal.     im trying to use a dynamic date range on a portal and it does not work. i tried performing a find of 9/25/2009 on the portal and it brings back all the original results on the portal. i can not perform a find from the date field. MORE DETAILS i have an employee table and a work order table the employee layout holds a portal from a relation from the work order table and i would like to perform a date range find to check on weekly status of work orders.   16. I have a functioning system whereby I hide a button using an empty textbox. It works perfectly, except that Filemaker will *not* let me set the "hide" color of the box to match the background. I have tried everything I can think of (using the eyedropper tool, setting the background to a stock color from the color picker and then setting the "hide" color to the same one, letting Filemaker screw up the color of the button and then changing the background to match)... no luck). Filemaker always insists on making the "hide" box darker than the background. This is driving me nuts. What am I missing?

    I have two tables: project records and outcome recordss. Not every project produces outcomes. I have a functioning button on the projects layout that triggers a script that finds and displays outcomes that cite the currently displayed project as their 'parent'. I would like to exclude this button from the layout if there are no find results. (Or at the very least, change it so that it says "No related outcomes"). I would like to go to the object name of the field and set it without checking the "Specifying target field" checkbox.     Hi All, I have a layout with a sub-summary part that works just fine when sorted by the breakfield. What I would really like to do is use some sort of conditional formatting to simulate a "alternating background fill". Here's the difference: I don't want to literally alternate every other row. I want to color them in groups. So, the first subsummary part, and all associated body parts are one color. Then, the next group is an alternate color, and so on. I've searched a lot for this, and haven't found a solution, and I keep running into dead-ends while trying to write a clever conditional formatting statement. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

    I haven't established any custom menus in my file yet...however not all access levels are able to access the same commands! All access levels are currently using the same menu, but some commands are greyed out. I can't figure out why this is... The most important missing commands right now are Control+ArrowKeys (on Mac) to navigate to previous or next records. I can do that no problem with [Full Access] account; but the moment I log into the accounts with restricted access privilege sets these menu commands get greyed out. All privilege sets have "Available Menu Commands" set to All. What am I missing? Thanks!

    Hi- I am having a most annoying and frustrating problem with the screen redrawing coupled with a slow checkbox response in FMP10. I have a list layout that has a checkbox with every record. I also have two scripts that allow one to either “Mark” or “Clear” checkboxes in a found set (and a third button that allows one to find a marked set- not a script). When I manually select a check box, FMP first takes a second (or more) to change its focus to that record… then marks the checkbox. If FMPs focus is already on a record, the checkbox response is okay. Manually unmarking the checkbox elicits similar response characteristics (FMP has to “think” about it). …

  27. When I copy fields to a layout, from another layout, the new fields are added to the tab order. These fields, by design, will never be included the tab order, so I have to redo the tab order for the form. Is there a property or attribute that I can assign to these fields which will keep them from being added to the tab order when they are copied to another form?

    I’m trying to sort records using a more “natural” sort order. By which I mean that given a text field with records: 1 2 10 A B C etc. will sort to user’s expectations (in other words, not like this): 1 10 2 etc. There’s a great algorithm for this: http://www.davekoelle.com/alphanum.html However, implementing in Filemaker is problematic, to say the least. Prior to version 10, filemaker wouldn’t be able to iterate the calculation properly, and even in version 10 it’s incredibly slow.     Is there a way to programmatically determine the number of subsummary occurences in list view/browse mode. I have a function that calculates the minimum height of a window (based simply on the layout size and the foundcount). I would like to include subsummaries on this window now in FM10, but I cannot do so without knowing how this will affect the window height. If there’s an easy way to determine the number of times the subsummary will occur given the foundset, then I should be able to factor that into the window height function.

    I’ve probably caused this problem myself. I have a Layout based on global field that hold a Yes value. I have a Portal on this layout that show records that have been selected in another layout by clicking on a Checkbox. The relationship is on these two fields. Now, it works. A user can select records by clicking the Checkbox and then go to another Layout that show just the they have selected records. Problem is, it only works in Portal. I need to print out this list and cannot seem to find a way to do it. If it's just a html web site, you can use "GetLayoutObjectAttribute("web viewer"; content)" to parse all the html written in the web page. But if I do the same thing in order to get text data from the web like http://hoge.com/test.txt, unnecessary text part come with it.( like html header part) I've found the plug-in "Troi URL", with that I can parse the only part of the text I want.     I have a value list called "Pricelist". I have a popup showing the value list so that I can select an item. Now I want a script trigger that after someone selects a current category, only the items from this category will be displayed. If I go into the value list editor, I can select "show only related items, …) and this works fine but of course I want to do this in a script step, so that when there is no category selected, it will display all items (if I do this now, it won't display anything based on the relationship).

I have an ancestry/progeny relationship going 5-deep (5 generations) that build on each other with a parent-child relationship from the prior generation. It uses a list calculation to match to.   55. I've seen database solutions with perfect placement of navigation and subnavigation across tons of layouts. There must be some automation tool out there that allows you to build these because doing it by hand is so time consuming. You need to move the navbar a bit or swap two buttons, and you're into it for another couple of hours doing basically nothing. So, what am I missing? I have tried searching for layout automation, auto layout pasting, layout navigation and I'm coming up with nothing. What's the secret here? Thanks much! James

  58. Is there a way you can change the selected and non-selected colours on the tab headers? Currently, the background colours on the tab headers are white (selected) and gray (not-selected). For example I'd like to be able to have the selected tab showing a red background and the non-selected tabs to be white. The fill colour of the tab body should not affected when you switch tabs.     Can someone suggest how I might visually highlight the top three values in a scrollable portal? The portal displays 20 out of a possible 100 records. The "top 3" would be the top ones out of the 100, so at any moment, all or none might be displayed. One alternative I've thought of is to have a script sort the Found Set and individually flag the top three values. The problem is how to trigger the script when there are changes to records. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

    I haven't used auto-completion option for Field Setups much so I don't know if this qualifies as a feature or just odd behavior... If I type a few characters into a field and it matches multiple entries then they are displayed in a drop-down style as expected. However, if I use the delete key to remove all of the characters then the list does not disappear. Instead all of the prior entries into this field suddenly appear. The behavior is different if the auto-completion feature matched only one prior entry. Deleting the text makes the list disappear (as I would expect). Feature or odd behavior?

    Hello Another strange problem. I have a portal that display Lists of line item. Many prices come from calculations, When I open my file and look at the portal, the calculated result show $0, when I click on the field the price come back. The summary field don't display the calculated price until I click on it. I suppose it come from the unstored calculation that generate the items prices. I can't store them because they come from other calculations. How can I solve this problem? Is there a starting script that I could build to solve that problem? Thank you

    I thought I had this figured out. I have a Layout that is supposed to be in a certain font. So when I created the layout, I configured the field to be a certain font and size. This was working perfectly for 95% of my records. But for some reason, several records are coming in as a different font. I can't determine why. How is the record's Font superceding the field's set font. Any ideas?

    Hi, I generally un-check "save record changes automatically" option in data entry list views. But the problem is about serial numbers. Order No field is auto enter serial number field. I do not want to allow the creation of records from the portal. I prefer a script because it goes to the related LineItem to get some variable and sets some fields first.     After much puzzlement I am asking for help. I have a portal that works normally in one tab and doesn't work in another tab in the same layout. I just copied and pasted into the other tab. I even pasted it outside the tab so I've got one copy in the tab section and one right next to it outside the tab and the one outside works (displays all related records) whereas the one in the tab only shows one record.     How do I determine if a record has been saved more than once? I have a field called "RecordStatus" in every table. I want to display the entered user, entered date and entered time in this field. If the record has been edited after the initial entry I want to display (in addition to the entered data fields previously described) the modified user, modified date and modified time. To get the result I want, I have compared the entered user and modified user along with the entered timestamp and the modified timestamp. Since the entered timestamp and the modified timestamp will always be different, all six fields of information show up on every entry. Any ideas?

I seem to remember that there is a way. Right now, I am having to unassign the Button Step, change the text, then reassign the button setup.   77. I am trying to make a Layout that will help me assign lockers in a locker room. If a locker is assigned, I would like the locker number to turn red. I have each locker as a separate record in: LockerTable I have locks in a separate table as I reassign them each year. I have students in another table. Under windows (xp/fm9A), the main layout window is maximised to hide the application window bar.   84. Hi, When I compile a runtime.. incl, check 2nd box to Disable Admin items My runtimes still have the Top FM menu.. where as user if smart enough can click Records and start Deleting..     I have an odd issue with on of my databases. This is only happening to on of the databases i have on my FileMaker server. When i open the database, instead of being aligned to the left, it opens all the way to the right (see attached screen shot).     I find that navigation scripts to a field is very limited in control. If the button script is any where below the field you like to navigate back to,when you click on the button then that field appears as the first line at the top of the page, not in the center of the page. Likewise when your button is above the intended field, when you click on the button to navigate to that field it appears at the last line at the bottom of the page. Normal thinking or navigation on this should be that you end up with that intended field somewhere in the center of the page/layout your viewing. Please tell me if my thinking is flawed here? Or if I am missing something?

    I have a field that is a text calculation. What it does is takes several other field's info, and puts it all together here. The problem is, two of my other fields are numbers, that have been formatted as currency, so they show the decimal places and a $ sign. But my calculation in the main field only copies the raw data. I want it to copy the $ and the decimal places.

    I searched the values list forum, but could not find this problem mentioned... I have a simple custom value list with 2 items: Process Now Schedule for Future When I select Radio Button to display the list, it truncates the values. I tried different fonts and font sizes and even reversed the order. I tried a horizontal and vertical display and made sure the field is large enough to fit the full value. If I add several spaces to the end of each value, it will display the values. If I add 1 space to the end of each, then it displays Process Schedule I am running on MAC, FMP 10. Anyone have this problem??
