I created a tabbed layout using "Insert Tab Control," but I want the different tabs to correspond to different tables. FM doesn't seem to allow more than one table per layout (unless you use portals, etc.) Is there any way to have a tabbed interface where each tab corresponds to a different table? The only reason is I want a tabbed layout is that it's attractive and easy for users to use.

Fairly new user here. Any way to do this? I want to display a small jpg from a web address in a web viewer, but have the viewer get the address from portal rows 1 through 6. I can get the first web viewer to display for the first row, but do not know how to match up the 2nd through 6th web portal rows to dispay in the individual web viewers 2 through 6. 1. Hi, I'm absolutely new with FM!! Here is my problem... I have thousand of contacts in my DB, and I would like to create a page in the same DB, or also external to the DB, where I can see only selected contacts. Every contacts has an ID #, name, title, company, notes, phone, email, address. I don't need to see all the fields in this new list, just name, company and notes. Thanks for your help!!

I am making a medical DB and was interested in charting a series of data points with a number of Dates over several years where the interval between consecutive dates is not the same (ie. Jan 1, 2000 then March 6, 2003 then Sept. 9, 2003 then Dec 8, 2008 etc) and these would be on the X axis and corresponding numeric data point on the Y axis representing a Lab value. Can this be done in FusionCharts? Does it need xmCharts? It seems that FusionCharts needs dates of equal time between dates such as consecutive months. Thanks a bunch in advance...

Another technique that recently occurred to me relates to injecting JavaScript into an already-loaded web page within webviewer. Interestingly, this can be accomplished without *any* plugins. The utility in this is that you can submit a form post to a site requiring cookies, previous login, etc, and specify *only* those fields such as login/password, no need to code hidden fields, tokens, session parameter fields, dynamic timestamps, etc. To achieve this, after, say, loading http://www.google.com, you pause until page loads, then set the url to "javascript:void(document.f.q.value = 'whatyouwant to search for');" this will cause the search field to go to "whatyo…

I would like to have a custom saved Google Map show in a FileMaker Web Browser window. Google provides a URL for the map, but Filemaker will not display it when put in as a custom address (I think this is because some of the characters are not properly processed by FM). If I paste the URL into my web browser, it works fine (Safari or Firefox). I've searched the entire site looking for conditional AND format AND checkbox but didn't find anything that addresses my particular question. In an event tracking db, I have a portal in a layout (based on the events table) that shows all the expected participants (from a join table - registrations - between participants and events) for a specific event. I have a portal showing a group of records with the following fields: title, description, serialNo, and versionNo. I don't want to show all the records though. I am trying to filter this portal to only show the most recent version of each title. Hi All, I have a portal that shows a list of Jobs. I have calculations under the portal that are based on the records listed in the portal. Each row / record in the portal hase a checkbox. When the checkbox is ticked the Job is included in the calculations, unchecked and that Job is not included. My problem is that the calculations don't recalculate until I click out of the portal. I have tried setting up a script trigger that goes to another object on the page, and I've tried having it refresh the window but it still seems like the only time it recalculates is when I cklick outside of the portal but not on any field or object. I feel like I am missing the obvious, but I give up. I created a "product card" template. Which users have populated several fields. Then they print it from the "product card" summary screen. Which is basically a high res graphic of an empty product card, with the information overlayed on it. I am trying to use very specific fonts on this layout. Regardless of what font the records are stored in. I am having trouble getting Filemaker to see any of the special fonts I am trying to use, even though they are in my Font Folder of my computer. Portal pop is where you have a long list of records on a portal list with a scroll bar that - the moment you click on a record somewhere down the list - the list resets back to the top again, very annoying! I have a table Subjects containing a list of unique values in field SubjectName. This field serves as a the value list for populating a field SubjN in a second table Articles, which is related to Subjects. My problem is that when I make changes to the values in SubjectName, the corresponding contents in SubjN do not refresh. Is there an automatic way to refresh them? There is a different field in Articles that populates automatically depending on the key that relates Articles to Subjects, so I have used only a value list for SubjN. Thanks for your suggestions.

I have an Order Layout with a portal to an Order Line Items Table. Certain items are "kits" where there are other items that are members of the kit. When a user selects a kit and enters a quantity the Line Items portal automatically creates the new rows using the kit items information and appropriate quantities. What I want to know is if there is any way to prevent just those rows that are members of the kit from being edited directly. Specifically I don't want the users changing the items or the quantities.

no matter what! I can't get it to work in my existing database, so I made a new one with one table, 2 fields, and 2 records. In the first record, fields 'A' and 'B' contain the values 'A' and 'B'. IN the second record, 'A' contains 'A' and B is empty. On the layout, A is about an inch above B, in the body, and the body is 2 inches tall. B is set to sliding based on all above and 'reduce the size of the enclosing part' is checked. In preview mode, the body parts are the same size for both records. I would have expected the body part for record 2 to reduce to the bottom of field A--the only other object on the layout. What am I missing? Thanks, …

I have a table Categories, containing fields CategoryName CategorySerial# CategoryDescription . There is a second table Subcategories, containing fields SubcatName SubcatSerial# CatSerial# Data The tables are linked by way of the fields CategorySerial# and the key field CatSerial#. Problem I would like the serial numbers in SubcatSerial# to "restart" from 1 within each Category, rather than simply having a unique SubcatSerial# for each record in Subcategories. UPDATE: Well this may be a first: after posting I disected 6 different postings and took a little bit from each (none related to containers) and made this thing work, or it seems to work anyway. I have a portal and I have a container, Photo 1. I have a button to insert a photo into container 1. All is good for the first portal row. Now I go to portal row 2 and enter data and then click my button to enter a photo into container 1 on row 2. But it shows up in the first portal row in container 1. Is there an easy way to know when a layout was last accessed using the DDR? My reason for asking is that I create a lot of layouts that are for specific needs. These needs may not last more than a couple months. I don't typically get a "hey, we are done with that layout" comment so we just keep adding to the list. My only other idea aside from the DDR is to create a global field for each layout and have it update with a timestamp/account name using the "OnLayoutLoad" script trigger. That way I know if it has recently been used and who the last person to use it was. I can ask that person if they need it and if not I can remove it from the layout list. Idea…

I am currently running an automated script that scrapes data from an HTML based lab system in my hospital. I collect study data this way. I was wondering if there was a way to get the html source without having to render HTML page first, as this would, theoretically, cut my data capture time significantly. Right now I use a loop to detect when the page has loaded in the webviewer and then scrape the code using getlayoutobjectattribute and then parse the code. It works great, but I'm always looking for ways to shorten the data collection time and this is the major limiting factor in the script. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

Students of board members are automatically placed into their first choice classes, then teacher's children are given priority, then others. If enrollment for a class goes beyond its max limit, I want Filemaker Pro to randomly select from students whose "first choice" field contains each class name. A client has asked me to add some functionality to a database I wrote a few years back in FM6. They want to be able, from any line in a report, to go to the corresponding (related) record for that report. Then from that related record, go back to the report using s "back" button. I have a simple layout on which there is a date field (StartDate). "[color:red]Sometimes", when the LO first loads the date field refuses to accept focus. Clicking in the date field results in the field NOT accepting the focus. I can click, click, click until the cows come home and I still can't get into the field. This is propably the most stupid question I've ever made. But I still ask it... : Is it possible to change fields in one layout via script during data input ? I mean, if I type "Cat" in first field, the following fields are changes automatically to fields that are needed to fill up when there is a cat in the first one. "Dog" would end up to different field setup. With Script Triggers it is possible to switch to another layout, but it doesn't work in IWP. I propably know the answer, but still... :

Hi everyone. I am looking for some ideas on how to solve 2 problems with a dropdown list. I have a layout with the customer records on it. I want to have a dropdown list that shows status. So the dropdown list will show active, inactive or all customers. My questions are: 1) What field do I use on the dropdown? I cant use the status field can I? I dont want it to update the records just to filter them. 2) How to I handle the All filter? There isn't a status for All in the table. I recently went ahead and performed a MS Update to my laptop (XP) I had been postponing, and ever since I have a file that crashes everytime it attempts to open a URL (it loads completely, FM freezes, then crashes a few seconds later). Now I have tried giving it a different "vanilla" URL to test whether it was the a problem with the site or the file itself, and it appears to be the site. I suspect it might have to do with some update to internet explorer. Has anyone else had this issue recently and could you fix it or is there some new issue to be aware of?

Is there a way to script the Open Tab Control box? I am using fake buttons to control my tab navigation and have my tabs set to zero pixels. Works fine in Browse mode, but very hard to find and open tab control in layout mode. Since the default tab is always returned when I go to layout mode, how do I get to the other tabs while in layout mode? Now, I have to "hunt and peck" around where the tab border is to find the panel. I don't see a script step to open tab control, but figure there must be a way??

This is related to a problem that I described and posted in the "Finding and Sorting" forum. In my database, I have one layout that is a common menu (i.e. button bar) and another layout that shows the list of music (vocal solos for singing in church) in the database. In the list view, if I limit the found set to 1 of 1 (from 1 of 2), and switch to the menu layout, the found set changes to 1 of 2. I verified this by using the data viewer to track the value of the "_found" field in the music table. I have a table with a field called "sex" for the user to enter "M" for male and "F" for female. I have a healthcare report that requires that I display a box for male and a box for female. Hi, I have table x with fields; name, user, date, reason. I need to display a date (not the contents of the field date) but the date the user is currently using. Hi, I am using a EXTERNAL time sheet filemaker db to track my employee time which is related to my employees via id_employee, which is a serial num auto-created. Using a pop down list, i relate my employees (id & full name) to records in other DBs, allowing me to pull up info. This works with my "sales" sheet in the same db as my employees, however it seems not work properly with my time sheet. Since deleting several test employees and starting with a new list, the drop down continues to be populated with old employees (that are now deleted) and NOT the new ones. Normally you can't put a border around a merge field because Field/Control - Borders isn't available. I found a way to put a box around merge fields that appears to be an anomaly. I'm using the Windows version of FileMaker Pro 10 Advanced. In Layout mode select a database field that's formatted the way you want the merge field text to be formatted and click on the Format Painter icon. It doesn't make any difference if the field has or doesn't have borders defined. Now click on the merge field. It will show a border. Go to Browse or Preview mode or print the page and that border is still there. Useful! To get rid of the border, in Layout mode select a field like …

hey all, I'm having trouble figuring out why my populated container field wont display properly. I was cruising thru a calendar tutorial the second time around and im stuck in the same spot. I've created a container field, populated it, and then created a TO just as the tutorial specified but each time I have done this I havent been able to see the square that is in the container field by going to the field in the TO. I did notice that I was doing a fmpro9 advanced tutorial while using fmpro9. There shouldnt be a difference there if im simply creating container fields, right? I have a personal inventory database, and have a value list "vendor" attached to the vendor field. I pop it up and create a new entry any time I have a new vendor whom I think I might use again (for speed and accuracy of entry). But if I buy something from a vendor I doubt I'll ever purchase from again, I enter the name ad hoc (I don't enter it in the value list). Is there any best practice on this sort of thing? thanks Ken

Hi, I am using Filemaker Pro v.9 Advanced. I have database I need to get done and am having a hard time with the relations for a conditional value list. It is based off of the Issue Tacking sample that comes with the software. So what I have done is created some tables. There is the issue traking. Then I created a Company table, Address Table and a Contact Table. What I am trying to do is if a company is entered and it is already in the list it can be chosen. That works fine. I would like to create a settings page for my application. This would be a layout where a user would set global fields such as: COmpany Name COmpany website Thier Name ect.. I have an annoying page break, represented by a dotted line in the layout view, right across the bottom third of a letter layout. I attach a screen shot. The letter is A4 size, but FM won't let me print it - it breaks two thirds down the page, on the dotted line. I've hunted for a way to re-size the page or move the dotted line, but can't find how to do it. Can anyone please help? Screen shot attached.

Hi, can anyone help me with a puzzling problem. I have a layout displaying a portal. In the portal I have a field for dates. There are clusters of entries for a given date then clusters of other date. What i would like to do is display a separator line between different dates. I have tried creating a self join using a get(portalrow) calc field and get(portalrow)-1. This does not work presumably because get(portalrow) only returns the active field. When I display a list in web view it shows 25 records. I can show the next 25 by clicking the next page icon on the web view version of the Status Area. However most users do not have access to this area. Is it possible to replicate this action (seeing the next 25 records) with a button on the form? Many thanks John

Hi I have a table that has 4 fields in it that I need to display in a value list. Field1. Primary Key of the table Field2. Title Name Field3. Location Name Field4. Foreign Key I created a calculation field in the table which joins all the 4 fields. Calc field = field 2&"*"&field 3&"*"&field1&"*"&field2.I put Title Name as the first field in the calculation field since I want the calculated field to sort on Title Name. I have a web viewer that starts here: http://alpacanation.com/alpacas-for-sale.aspx The user can then enter the search criteria and select an animal from the search list. I have an extract for the data from the animal page. After the extract, I want to return the user to the list of animals from the search criteria page. I can't figure out how to capture the options selected on search and none of the "set webviewer" options (back, forward, reload) seem to work. Must be a simple solution??? Hi. I maintain an international directory. It presents a pull down list of every country represented in the data (which gets updated every week). Once a user picks a country, the next field lets him select from a pull down list of states in the selected country. Likewise for a city in the selected state. My problem is that in addition to the country list being made up of those dynamically found in a field, I also have two fixed choices - one of these I want to appear at the top of the list and the other at the bottom. I just started with FM after not doing anything with databases for a number of years (dBase III & IV, some Access). I am "awed" by FM. I have a global field with a conditional to change colors on certain events. I am using that field in many layouts and tabs across my app. I created the global and set the conditionals, then I copied that field everywhere I want to use it. I thought I could go back in and change the conditional on the global field and that would propagate to all other occurrences of the field, but it only changes on that one. Is there a way to setup a field with conditionals so that if the conditional is changed, it will change in every use of that field? I thought maybe with a calc field, but I could not get that to work either. Thanks.

I have a DB with 9 tables, all related by Name and Year. I would like to produce a report that pulls all records from all nine tables that match a Name and ID that i enter, but I am having trouble doing this without the use of portals (which I cannot use because you have to specify their length, and some names have more results than others so this causes problems when printing). Should I be using 9 subsummary parts, one for each table and then have all of the fields that i want outputted in the body? I have 2 layouts that share fields. One layout requires large fonts while the other requires small fonts. Is there a way that the same field across different layouts can have a different font or font size across the layouts? It seems that no matter what the field setting, the font and font size are those that were used in the layout where the data was entered. So basically, I want to enter my data in one font size in layout A, but show up as another font size in layout B. The database is for livestock management, specifically for goats. For the present, all the tables I am concerned about are related to the Goat table, in which each record represents a different goat. Each of these related tables gives details about a different sort of thing that happens to a goat; for example, each record in the Symptoms table has a date, a Goat ID, and a symptom, and each record in the Weight table has a date, a Goat ID, and a weight. Hi, FileMaker 10 Mac. Status bar is locked closed. Custom menus are used. I have a simple script which: 1. finds & sorts records 2. goes to pretty layout 3. opens staus area 4. enters preview mode 5. pauses ... ... ... ... ... 6. offers opportunity to print 7. closes & locks status area 8. returns to original layout & enters browse mode.
