    I am trying to create a pop-up value list to insert an employee ID into a field on an unrelated table (Mail Boxes), so the ID of the employee who opened the mail can be verified and stored. Problem is, employees are in the Contacts table, with all the other contacts. (I thought this would help reduce the number of layouts, fields, etc., especially when hiring an employee already in contacts.) When I make the value list use the fields from contacts, everything is fine, but I get a list of ALL contacts, not just employees.     I have one table (Instructors), related to 3 separate tables (Days_Available, Certifications, and Addresses) by a primary key. In a fifth table (Events), I need to be able to select and schedule Instructors based on information in the 3 related tables (Days_Available, Certifications, and Addresses).   4. Hi. I'm new to FM and have attempted a database to keep track of conversations, issues and incidents within out staff. What I am looking for is to have a hidden field named 'Final Notice' that will show within the employee's profile if they were placed on Final Notice.     I've got a very simple fairly-standard Contact Database with two tables, Company & ContactName. The two tables are related through CompanyID and unlimited persons can be added to a company. I have a third file/table (let's call that "Invoices") that "pulls" information from the ContactDatabase via drop-downs and lookups. In contacts I add my contact details and in groups I can enter all the groups that individuals can be members of.     I have a value list that is actually a checkbox set. As a new case is created, the number populates this field. It is great since they just click a box and it is referenced to the case. But here is my problem... What do I do when the list exceeds 100 cases? The checkbox does not allow for a scrollbar to accommodate the large and growing set of cases.

So, every Name from every record is in the Value List and Drop Down menu.     Can I make a "dynamic" value list? I'm building a solution that tracks a trader's transactions and which 'suggests' the size of the next trade based on various risk thresholds. Would it possible to translate that 'suggestion' (the result of a simple calculation) into a "capped" value list that actually leaves out any values that are greater than the suggestion?     Hi I am not sure if this would be the right area of teh forum to ask this question but honestly I didnt know what section to start in. My question is this: I have a simple database that i built to keep track of an inventory. For the last year I am the only person who has entered any stock into this database. Now I will be training someone else to enter stock into the database. What I would like to do is when this person enters a record into teh database, that a field will be auto filled showing which account last edited the field and/or entered the record.     I have setup a SQL Database on my server and I have an ODBC connection to it. I can make forms and manipulate data with no problem. My issue is, when I try to make a value list from fields that are on the SQL Database, all the tables are grayed out. WTF? If I create a new table in my Filemaker Application, it shows up as ready to use for a value list. Is this one thing that Filemaker cannot do with SQL Server yet?

    I need some pointers. My shop sells gelato. There are 80 possible flavours. I am creating a db which tracks production and inventory. I created a list with all flavours, and then every day the worker can check the flavours they produce. I have a field which then counts total number created, time taken etc. But I also want two more things. I want to generate a report at the end of the week, of the number of each flavour created.   26. Hi I have a selector field that is not in the tab order and I made it un-enterable as well. I named the field object "SelectorField". The field is a button that basically ends in a go to object script step that sends the user to the SelectorField object. Problem is it doesn't open the value list, it just puts a black border around the field. Anyone know how to make the value list pop open? Is it possible to have a selection on value list, after selecting it (there are only 3) then navigate you to a particular field on the layout? I would want to keep the selection in the value list, but afterwards, jump to a different field.     I am using tables to create my value list. When I put in a new value in the list in a particular order. When I pull down the list it sorted the list and takes them out of order. I then added a field to group them in a particular order but it will show in the pull down if I sort them by the group. Is there a work around. Thanks in advance.

    Hi, I have got customers where each customer can have many divisions and in each divsion customer can have many contacts. I have attached the zip file for the purpose. When the application is run you will be able to see 2 customer records. My problem is when i click on Add New contact it displays the contact layout but in the division drop down it does not show the divisions for that particular customer.     I'm creating a script that will send an email getting data from a particular record. As the primary user for this uses Thunderbird, I'm doing this with a open url mailto: script. There are a couple instances where I am trying to insert data from a checkbox set, however instead of there being a carriage return at the end of each option, it just runs them together. For example Option1Option2Option3 Instead of Option1 Option2 Option3 It works fine if I use the regular send mail function, but I can't get it working with the open url function. Thanks! Matt

The user has checked 'c'. Later the value list is different because the other field's values are now a,b,c, and e (d is no longer a field value and therefore no longer in the value list).     I am trying to create a complex report where the dates are going to be changing every week when it is generated. (First monday for 6 weeks past the report date) I have the two layouts created so the user enters the Report Date then a button takes them to the actual report, but I have calculated fields that are supposed to fill in those future 6 dates. I have those working, but now I would like to view them in a subsummary report. I read in the FileMaker Advisor of a "Value list of fields" feature, but it doesn't specify how I would create it.     I would like to create 3 reports in [color:red]different language[color:red]s (German, French, English). They all display a date which I then format to display the name of the day and the date. However, since FM is getting he systems format (e.g. German) it displays it in German (e.g. Mittwoch, 21.Juli 2007).     Howdy, all: I'm creating a run-time solution where a user will be printing a report that has four different fields in it. What I'd like to have users be able to do is select the sort order without having them manually set it up using the Sort Field command/script step. The four fields are: Cost_Category, Cost_Type, Date, and Record_Number. Ideally, there'd be a pop-up menu adjacent each field with each menu having a value list numbered 1, 2, 3 and 4.     I have a value list showing me times. The initial value in the field where the value list is attached is already set. I want the use to, when they click the value list, have the starting value be the same as the value that is currently entered into the field. For example: The field currently contains the value "11:30AM".     I have set up this test database to try to have a conditional value list of zip codes so that when I enter City I go to States and the choices are reduced only to those states where there are corresponding cities and then when I go to zip codes only those zip code(s) are a choice. I have played with this for hours and hours and this is the best I could do. It works, I think, but, I'm concerned with the relationships and how I have them set up.     I have a database of products which has a sub class identifier. I also have a bunch of safety warnings in value lists. What I would like to do is to have certain warnings from the lists activated based on it's sub class identifier. ie. subclass =210 value list 1= wear gloves active (rest inactive) value list 2= explosive rest inactive) value list 3 = do not use in confined spaces etc.rest inactive) I'm not sure how i should even start...     I have a field (called class) using a pop-up menu that is selected from a filed in another table and only uses related values from another table. The related value shows a subject, e.g English. When the user clicks in class they only see the 10 or so records from the related table (which has 100 records) which are pertinent to English. My problem is that the user is likely to want to do a search in the class field. if they do this, the pop-up shows no values defined. I need to be able to do a find from the currently selected records rather than from the whole set with the contents of the subject field retained for the search. Has to be possible....no?

    I have a conditional value list (one value list is filtered based on another value list) and was wondering how to enforce that a user ONLY choose the values in the list? For instance, I have 3 Types General Graduate Special Admit Under General, there are a handful of choices that are different from the choices that are under Graduate and so on. But a user can enter Misc instead of General and there is nothing for Misc since it’s not in the value list for types. Any way to not allow the users to enter in MISC or something they think?     While it would have saved me about 40 minutes of tinkering and resource scouring to know that calculations cannot be used in value lists, further tinkering resulted in using a text field with auto-enter options as a successful value list. In this case its just a first/last name concatenation used as a second field to a primary key value list. It seems to be working fine. Noob is happy, noob cannot foresee problems in future. Please correct noob if noob in danger. Is there any difference between an auto-enter calc and a calc field in terms of when they (re)evaluate?

    I am trying to auto-populate a field in a new record using the value of that field from the previous related record. This field uses a value list from a related table. I also require that I can change the value in the new record without changing the value in related records. The "Value from last visited record" option will not work because, often, the last visited record is not a related record and the field auto-populates with the wrong value.     Hi, I have a project table where I need to update a contact_id field (a foreign key to a contact table). This is easy with a dropdown list and a value list, but the problem is the contact table is in the thousands of records and therefore it's tedious to locate the one needed (specially when you only know a part of the name). One solution could be to build up a value list entering a part of the name of the contact on a text field, which then would filter the records that contain this string. I've been strugling with this without success, because all I tried involved calculations that could not be indexed. Anyone? I'd thank very much any help! Llorenc

    Greetings I have a text field that I want to populate with members of a value list. The value list contains a small list (about 10) of accounts, eg, 102, 103, 104 etc. I can populate the field with the check boxes just fine. What I want to do is count how many items are checked.     This is a fairly complicated request. I have two tables in one file, Shipping & Invoicing. Each Shipping Record has a shipping_number, each Invoicing Record has a invoice_number. The Invoicing Table has a repeating field populated with the shipping numbers that are being used for that invoice (an invoice can have more than one shipping record).     Hi - I have a drop down field that shows values from a value list, defined to show only the second field in its definition. Works fine except that each time a new value is added (on a different layout in related table), when I come back to the layout where the drop down field is, the new value is not there the first time. If you click on a blank area of layout, and then drop down list again, the new value is there. Sometimes, just dropping it down a second time shows it. Is there a reason it's not showing up the first time, and is there anything I can do in a script after adding a value so that this doesn't happen? Thanks, Michael

    I use FM Pro 5.5, and I'm looking for a way to select an element in layout mode using a drop down list of elements in the layout I'm working on. For example, in MS Access, there is a drop down in properties where I can select an element of that layout whether it be a field, text, or some other element. I'm after a way to do that in FM. My reason is that the layout I'm working on may have a lot of closely spaced elements that are difficult to select or may by positioned behind other elements making it very difficult to select. For layout reasons I need to use a drop-down or pop-up value list (can't use a portal, for example). The values come from a related table. The values to be selected are unique. The values in the field I want to sort by might not be, so I can't use it as the first field. The values in the sort field are meaningless to the user, so I don't want him to see them, even during the actual selection process. Is there a way?

    I am trying to use a value list to display a job selection field that is easier for a user to view. I am using related value lists to display and use JobID numbers associated with a spefic job name. For instance, job_001 is a unique record with a decrption field of "Uptown".     I need to have two different value lists for a field. The value lists show items from different related tables. The field is a part number and the value lists are (1) parts from the entire inventory and (2) a subset of the parts based on a job, if it defined. I had the idea of using a Tab field to switch between hidden tabs based on whether a job is defined or not. That would make the part field with the appropriate value list defined "appear".     I seem to have come across a problem, I am attempting to create a customer contact notes system. The fields we will have will be 'reason for call', 'notes', 'client id' and 'date'. What I dont seem to understand is how I get to have a single line of notes, then once that has been completed for the program to have another empty fields line created, is this possible. If not is it possible to have a large number of available columns within the database, what I dont want is to have loads of columns and having the user to tab through all of them.
