I am currently revisiting the problem of installing FMSA9 in a two machine configuration. These are both brand new XServes running Mac OS X Server 10.5.3, with FMSA 9.0.3.326. My last attempt at this (way back in January) was abandoned after it became clear that we were using under-spec machines and we rolled back to FMSA8. Originally we attempted to install the webserver/wpe on the DMZ and FM Server on the LAN, with all ports on the firewall open between the two machines and no internal firewalls running. The only other service on the FM Server is Open Directory, while the webserver is also running Apache 2.2 and AFP. The installation appeared to go smoothly e…

Hey Everyone, This is likely a dumb newbie question, and the answer is likely to rtfm, but I'm hoping someone might be able to help out as I'm concurrently trying to learn FM 9, develop a new FM 9 database for our business, and migrate our data from FM 6. So we've been slowly creating a new database for our business using Filemaker 9 via Server 9. Currently we are still running Filemaker 6 clients connecting to a Filemaker Server 5.5 running OS 9 (Don't laugh...it actually works well!). I'm slowly trying to migrate data and sections of the database. I've converted some of the different databases we use and can see them using Filemaker 9, but when I t…

Last night (Jun 11, 08) IT installed an MS OS patch to all desktops and servers. Apparently they rebooted the server. Today, when I opened the Remote listing of Server-supplied files from a client machine, I don't see one of the files. 14 of the 15 show. No one can see that particular file from any client. Two or more clients had that file open when the server rebooted. Opening the Databases folder on the server shows me that the 365MB file with its 75,000 records is there. (Whew!) If I drag it to my desktop, it opens. Why can't the server display the file? The "Don't let the server Remote display this file" box is clear. I ran Recover on the file and …

Hi there, I'm hoping you bright sparks can help, and that this is the correct forum to post this to - I suspect our issue may be ODBC-related at core, but the symptom is primarily centered around the fmserver process. Sorry this is a long post, I want to provide as much background as possible as it may help someone to recognise the problem. However I'll try and keep my questions at the end to the point based on the research I've already done. First a bit of background: We are running FMS8.0v4 Advanced on a Windows Server 2003 (SP2) box. A number of FM clients (max 10) could be connected via FM clients at any one time. Additionally the database serves as a d…

I have two dbs that are related. When I open both bds locally via FMA9, there is no problem. But when I open the same files in 'remote' via FSA9 which is on the same machine, FMA9 says that the files are already being used, which is not the case. Strangely, when I open the same files via FSA9 on another machine, all is well. Naturally, I cannot open FM on the host server machine and have the server running. Any ideas?

I am in the process of converting our online registration system from CDML to FX.PHP and I'm ready to set up an SSL connection on some pages so that users entering their credit card information get the lock showing in their browsers. I'm using FMSA8 on the same computer as the Web Publishing Engine and the Web server. Is there any more to it than simply installing an SSL certificate under Apache and directing users to https:// addresses? Do I need to turn on secure connections in FileMaker Server Admin if I'm going to serve secure PHP pages in Apache that link to FileMaker, or doesn't it matter?

Hey, I have a solution at work where an FM7 solution is used on a local network. One of the computer ( total 4) has the file open and the other use open remote to acess it. This computer is hooked up to a router which in turn connects to the internet via ADSL. Shouldn't i then be able to open that file remotly from my home as long as it's running at work? One of the problems is that i can't find what IP-adress that computer has. If i use IPCONFG in dos i will only get the IP that it uses in local network. How can i find the IP adress that that computer uses when accessinng internet? And where do i enter that information? If this is possible to do :

Hello all, I installed FMS9 on Windows 2003 Server a few weeks ago. All is well except that I cannot open the Admin Console without providing a username and password. With Server 7 as long as I was a member of the FMSAdmin group I could open the console directly as it used Windows authentication. With FMS9 this is no longer the case. I have created an FMSAdmin group and made myself a member and I have enabled "Allow members of the fmsadmin group to login" but I still have to supply a username and password to use the Admin Console. Maybe this is how it is supposed to be. Anybody know for sure? Thanks!

I have several Filemaker databases I need to be able to access via JDBC. I have FM9 advanced Server installed with ODBC/JDBC turned on. I have followed the instructions for creating a priveledge set and granting the ODBC/JDBC extended priveledge. I have created a user on the file. I upload the file to the FM9 server and open it successfully. I then connect to it using JDBC and this works fine too. I then repeat the exact same steps for a second database and I cannot connect to it - I get a 'no such account' error. I am using the DataDirect SequelLink JDBC driver with the following connection string - jdbc:SequeLink://192.168.232.254:2399 Do I need to include in the co…

Our company has been unable to get FMS9A working with Apache running with iTools 8. View a screen shot of error message. According to Tenon (the developer of iTools) they currently have many customers successfully running iTools 8 with FMS8A and the FileMaker PHP/API beta. According to Eric Jacobson, Product Manager of Internet Technologies at FileMaker, Inc. "FileMaker Server 9 for OS X only supports the version of Apache that is provided as part of OS X. This means that we only support Apache 1.3 installed in the default location. There is no support for using Tenon iTools with FMS9 or FMS9A." I realize that FileMaker's official position is that the…

I'm trying to set up a test environment in OS X Leopard and cannot get things working. I installed FileMaker Server 9.0v3 Advanced on a cleaner Leopard Server install. When I try to launch the Admin Console I get the following errors: First, I am told the Database Server is not and am given the option of restarting it. After clicking restart I am told "Unable to start the database server". The console app sits for several minutes so I then quit it and am told "An unknown error has occurred." I assume this has something to do with Leopard as I am currently running in production under Tiger. I thought possibly it could be because I am re-using the same serial numb…

Hello, I'm running FMS9 on OSX-Server 10.5 I have a script that uses an apple-script to create a folder on the server HDD to store client information like PDF's, emails etc. On creating a new client, a folder is made with the client name and number. Previously I ran FMS9 on a stand-alone PC (non-server) and I could just list "macintosh HD:rootname:". When switching to OSX Server I ofcourse had to place these in the "Users:Servername:Public" folder to be accessible to other computers. My question is, what is the path to this folder? I've tried "Macintosh HD:Users:Servername:Public:" but I get an error that this folder can not be accessed. Tha…

(Posted to the Server forum as I believe this is a performance issue specific to Server) I have two very large tables (600,000 records each) that are related by a 2 field relationship -- Date, and ID (numeric). Call them Table A and Table B. It's a one-to-one relationship. I have a need to make sure that every record in table A has a child in table B. Right now, I'm doing this: Go to layout (Table A) Perform Find (finds for TableB::ID = *) Show ommtted records loop set field TableB::ID ; Table A::ID go to next ; exit after last end loop The problem: The initial find step takes 15 minutes or so! I've tried using the inverted …

I'm currently in a situation where I've, basically, just jumped in head-first into the world of FileMaker and Macs with a new position (as of Monday). I'm an experienced Windows and Linux administrator, but I'm fairly unfamiliar with both the PPC arch and OS X. I mention PPC because I've currently got a 1.25GHz G4 Powermac with 1.5G RAM running FileMaker Server 9. There's an average of 12 connected users at any one time, and 16 user max, though this is likely to change in the weeks to come. Current performance of the database can be described as really, really slow, and the coming weeks will see an increase in the amount of use due to deadlines in 6 weeks. The server…

Hi, I'm new to filemaker. I have it set up on 2 iMacs which are connected via a wireless network. I'd like to share my database between the two computers. I have Sharing turned ON in FileMaker Network Settings, allowing user access to the file. The Box marked "Don't display in Open Remote File dialog" is UNCHECKED. I believe I have everything the way it's supposed to go... The database is open on the host computer. On the other computer, I go to Open Remote..., I can see the host computer, but when I click on it, the database I'd like to access doesn't come up. Help... please... and thank you!

I've moved a solution onto FM Server and am hitting into a few bad performance surprises. I don't know how Filemaker divides its work between the server and the client, but I have a hard time understanding why Delete All Records is as slow as it is. Basically, I have a "work" table that needs to be emptied every time, prior to being used. It can have typically around 7000 records in it, and it just crawls on the Delete All Records step. Import is also a problem. I'm simply importing into my work table from the found set in another table in the same database, but it only manages about 5 per second when it runs on the server. The server runs FMS9. I don…

The problem: I've got a >100 000 record database hosted at fmgateway. Users access the data via cwp. The user speed is fine. Other processing with this data happens using fm pro on my desktop with the data at fmgateway (separation model). It's really slow. If I store the data on my local fmserver the processing speed is fine but then the user cwp access is slow (because I have adsl) I thought I could have 2 identical databases - one running locally and the other hosted at fmgateway and replicate them. I looked at a commercial replication solution but it seemed a bit pricey. Any ideas? Thanks Pete

Our company is using FM Server 9 to host our files via remote access over the internet. We are experiencing extremely slow speeds when opening files and navigating through layouts, loading value list drop down, etc. We've tried removing various components, images, complex relationship, extraneous fields/scripts/layouts/tables and find no increase in speed. Any suggestions or insight into what might be causing the slowdowns would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I have an Applescript Script application set to run as a scheduled OS Script. It's not working and I'm wondering why? I receive a confirmation email from the Server saying the script has completed running: FileMaker Server 9.0.3.325 on FMPSERVER reported the following event: 2008-05-13 17:07:00.311 -0500 Information 150 SXFMP Schedule "FMP Backup Archiving" completed. But it didn't run. The script application runs fine if I launch it in the Finder, but no matter what I've tried, it does not execute when the FileMaker Server says it did. Any thoughts or ideas what could be wrong?

FM server 9 is running on Windows SBS 2003 FM Pro 9 client is installed on a Windows 2003 Terminal Server to allow remote clients to access the database. Hi, I am running a scheduled script on server 9v3. It worked fine for a little while and now I am getting a "ScriptMaker script aborted" message. I checked all steps and they are all web compatible. There is not conflict with other schedules and I have changed the time and frequency of it and still the same. I run the script manually and it works fine. Is there at least some way to find out why? It doesn't tell me why just that it aborted. What could be causing this? Thanks Mike

Hi, I've a client who would like to export individual records from their filemaker database to his website, basically use filemaker as his cms. The records do contain images. I am getting my head around filemaker server, and i'm wondering if it's overkill. The reason I say overkill is because i don't need any live sharing of data from the database, just a publishing solution My preliminary thoughts were to use it to communcate to a php upload script on the web server (if that even possible, please don't laugh). The client does not host servers and their hosting provider has no filemaker facilities. Mysql/php is the existing technology, should i use FMS to update…

Hi. It could be there's a better forum to post this question to, but I had a hard time finding any. This isn't only about security, but security plays a role. I'd like to know more about how to best share filemaker files. I got an error message saying that I should not share a file directly from a remote volume because it will reduce performance and affect reliability. It says I should, "instead share the file by opening it in FileMaker Pro software on the same computer where the file is stored on disk. You can then open the file remotely from your computer using the Open Remote command." So, it sounds like I should keep my working copy of the database I'm …

Ok, I'm new to FM, so I'm having a little trouble understanding. I've got FM 9, and I've created an Inventory database. I'd like to store the database on a server, then have myself, along with 2 other people be able to edit it. Is it possible to save it on the server, then open it from a server? I see a similar option, although I believe it is to open a database from FM Server, the application. I currently have a linux server. Is there any way I could do what I'm looking for? I'm sorry for such a rookie question, but I'm really liking FM, but I'd hate to make changes on the database, then send the file to a few other people so they have the most updated version. I am using two PowerPC G5's as my test servers. They both have Mac OS 10.5.2. One has a trial version of Filemaker 9 Server installed as master. One has Tenon's iTools version 9 (Apache 2.2), Lasso 8.5.5 and Filemaker 9 Server installed as a worker. I presume this loads FM's Web Publishing Engine. I have removed any mention of FMSA 8 and jk_mod from the httpd.conf file. When I try to connect the master to the worker, it fails. It sees that Apache is loaded and then: "Web Server Test Failed. We have successfully deployed FM Server on two of our XServes running Leopard. In both cases, the two NICs were used to form an aggregate for redundancy. But we have a need for these servers to participate on two different networks & were able to put VLANs on top of the aggregate. Again no problems as far as system access was concerned. No so for the server, it went down in flames. Does anybody have FM Server running on a system with VLANs? Or even on a system with two networks (one on each NIC)? Thanks.

I've got an older server running FileMaker Sever 9. It's under the necessary spec for FMS9. However, I've got little choice but to use it until the new server requisition comes in. So, I'm wondering what I can do to help improve the performance. As essentially everything important can be performed from the fmsadmin console tool, I was wondering if Java could be disabled: it's using 800+ Mb of swap and 100Mb of resident private memory, amongst other things. I'm not able to see how FMS actually uses it, directly. So, can I disable/shut down the java process, and if so, is there a 'clean' way to do so?

I'm trying to help someone who wants to know what is supported or not, and what the limitations of are, for using FileMaker Pro 9 to open files on Server 7. Hi, We have just upgraded from Server 8 to Server 9, and I have selected the option "Verify backup integrity" for both the midday and nightly backup we run. I can't seem to locate any documentation regarding the verification process. Hello, we are using CWP XML for sending request to a FM8 Server on a Windows Server. Now we have some performace problems with higher user numbers sending queries to the db. While we're optimizing everything (hardware, reducing layouts, etc) we questioning ourself how the WPE handles CWP XML request. Does it process all XML request on a one by one method in a serial way or can it process multiple requests at the same time. Are there differences when sending request to different layouts, tables or files for multithreading request? I hope someone can bring up some infos on how the WPE process multiple incoming request. Thanks in advance.

If you set up a file to be hidden in the remote dialog box, how do you make it accessible in scripts? For example if I was in one file that was being hosted on the server and I wanted to setup a script to open a hidden file. How would you do this without taking them offline? In the old versions of filemaker if you wanted to do this while the file was being hosted on the server, the dialog box within scripts would open the hidden files.

Hi, I am trying to create a script schedule but it seems that I've found another of Filemaker's billions of bugs and limitations. I am trying to make the file import records from a file in same folder once a day. I've tried it using using a local path, a relative path, a windows path, and a networked path. The server utility shows that the script was performed without error but no files are imported. Also, I tried to get it to send an email to me (Just the simple mail function in the script maker) and it won't do that. As you can probably tell I am getting pretty frustrated so if someone could help I would appreciate it. Thanks a bunch! - Randall

I'm using FMS 9 and have not used the server software before. I loaded it a few months ago, but, have been working on my new application and not spent time with it. I felt it was time to upload the databases to the server side and went to start the console. The console starts and I get the following: PHP - On IWP - Off XML - On XSLT - On --- Database Server Off ODBC/JDBC - Off +++++++++ When I click on a left menu item I get: "The Database Server is not available. Admin Console functionality is limited to FileMaker Server overview. To use further functionality, please start the Database Server again." On the top of the page there is a …

I had to reinstall Filemaker server 9.0 when I forgot the username/password for the admin console. I also had to reinstall OSX Tiger server as well--I really messed it up. Now, everything is working great and has been for the past few months. However, whenever I need to adjust the OS X server admin settings (I added a new printer yesterday) I get the OLD filemaker database IP address from last year AND the one we're using now under local hosts! Better yet, this old "local host" ip address comes and goes, now it's gone. It's phantom presence caused startup issues--what a mess! Remember, my original problem is that I lost the username and password. How do I get rid …

I'm trying to figure out exactly how filemaker server counts concurrent connections. My understanding so far is that it supports: 250 TOTAL simultaneous connections: - 250 via client - max 100 via IWP (out of the 250 so you could have 100 iwp users and 150 client users) - 50 xDBC connections (and i guess these 50 are substracted from the total overall connections as well? so you could have 50 odbc connections, 100 IWP and 100 client) How are the PHP connections (via fx class or via PHP API) counted? Do they count as a single connection? What does "simultaneous connections" mean in the context of php and how does it affect the other connections…

Hi There I am not a user but a business owner who needs some independent advice. I have a ticketing service that sells tickets to shows. Currently we use a file maker application for desktop sales. We wanted to go to a much bigger on line service and commissioned this in FMP. It is now running but in big trouble speed wise. I am getting conflicting advice. The developer says it is my server provider but I have a Unix developer saying that it was a mistake to use FMP as it really is not designed for something that need to serve lots of concurrent on line users. So I am in a position where I don't know whether to persist with FMP or get a new version made in SQL. …

Hi guys Running FMPserver 5.5 Lately it has been disappearing from the open remote window. If it is accessed directly on the server, stopped then restarted it appears again. This has only been happening irregularly in the last month. Any suggestions on what the problem is (ie the server itself?) or solutions? It has performed OK for 6-7 years on the same server.

I have a script that I have set to run when the file is opened, however it won't run! It's a script that updates a date field to show today's date and some other dates that come from another database. Right now, we have to manually run this script. The same script opens and works on every other database but one!

[color:black]I installed the demo of FMP AS 9.0v3 on a Mac just over a week ago. I've been testing database for use internally via IWP on our company's intranet. I have an order in for a full license, but it hasn't made it through purchasing channels yet. The demo install has been working fine up until last friday. I was editing some of the tables and viewing the changes via Safari. So both fmnet and IWP were working. But when I tried to connect to the server using the Admin console, and got no response. After a few more attempts, I figured the simplest thing to try first would be to close the databases and reboot the Mac. When the Mac rebooted, it appears that FMPAS isn'…

I have just purchased FM9 Server for my company and it is already starting to pay off in terms of performance. One of the features I am keen to use is FM script triggering via a schedule. I already have a script that prints a thank you letter for sales sold the day before. I would Like FM server to automatically print these out every day. I have set the print setup and print script lines to 'perform without dialog' and I have a printer connected directly to the PC running FM Server. I just keep getting "Script aborted" errors. Has anyone any Ideas why this is not working? thanks

There is some new information related to Java and the Admin Console that pertains to users who have more advanced 64 bit machines. First, see Apple Tech Info 307403 and then see FileMaker Tech Info 6842. If you are running Leopard and having trouble with the Console, this might be a solution. All- Thanks for the moment of help here! Does anybody know a way to simply back up a working config of FMS9 on Mac, such that you can drop in the settings/deployment to another machine during a migration - without going through the "write all your settings down, then recreate" that the FMS documentation suggests? The /Library/FileMaker Server/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.blahblahblah.plist file seems to have the settings I need (schedules, etc), but so far dropping that in to a new config isn't working crackerjack. Any thoughts? Many thanks!

Hi all, My question is about automatically running a web incompatible script every night. It would have been possible to use FMSERVER 9, if it was not web incompatible. But, I need to send emails and send email script step is not web compatible. I have been doing this by running a Filemaker file which opens the remote file and runs the script inside that remote file and then automatically closes itself. This has interestingly worked for 2 years in a MacOSX server. I added the File reference only once with usr and pwd, and it did not ask me about that usr and pwd again. This is a multi user system with an advanced privilige system, so usr and pwd are musts. N…

Hello all, I hope I am posting in the right forum, there are so many here. : I am looking for second opinions on my companies decision to use (or not) Filemaker. My company currently uses Filemaker 9 Advanced to handle some of our internal data, client information, and production tracking. My boss has asked me to develop a new Filemaker application that does all of that (better) and more...including some things that Filemaker doesn't natively do (well in my opinion / needs a plug-in). Like: Exchange Server Integration, Active Directory Integration, Event Driven Task Management, and Production Scheduling. I understand the benefits of using Filemake…

We've got a FM solution that consists of a number of different files. They all have the same un/pw so you only enter it the first time and then the other files open without the need for credentials again. I recently added a new file into the mix of things to store images pulled from a digital camera. I added the same un/pw to this file just like I did all of the others. I was actually working remotely and I logged into the FM server, added the new file and opened it up inside FM Server. It shows running just like the rest of them. From this point on everything worked great for me...remotely. I come into the building today where the actual FM server is locat…

So -- I had FMS 9.0v3 running on 10.4.11 without issues. I decided to update the server to 10.5.2, so I uninstalled FMS 9.0v3, updated (in-place) my server to 10.5.2, then installed the Leopard compatible 9.0v3 FMS. Under 10.4.11, I had been using the default locations for the databases and backups -- /Library/FileMaker Server/Data/ After installing 9.0v3 and rebooting -- the databases open in the correct location. However, the *backup* schedule says that "filemac:/Server HD/Library/FileMaker Server/Data/Backups/" is not a valid path. but all the permissions are as they normally would be: total 16 drwxrwxr-x 7 fmserver fmsadmin 238 Apr…

I'm pretty sure this has to do with our FM Server configuration -- but I'm not sure exactly is causing the trouble. FM Server Advanced is running on a PC Server. Files are hosted and normal. PCs can access without problem both manually and with an opener file. However, the Mac computers can see the server, but the files do not appear in the right-hand box when the server is selected. If we specify the name of the file, or if we use our opener (which works fine on PCs), we get an error message ("Either the host is not available, or the file is not available on the host"). Do we need to uncheck "Secure Connections"? Does it have something to do with lim…

In our solution we want all users who log in to a particular Windows XP workstation to have their Filemaker application User Name set to the Workstation name not the individual AD name. The Users can move from station to station and we want to have some functionality constrained to a particular station. The problem is if a new user logs in, a prompt will come up the first time they open Filemaker which asks the user for a name and defaults to the AD User name instead of the workstation name. Is there any way to either get this set once for all or have it default to the workstation name?

Hi, we plan to migrate from FM 5.5 (Client & Server) to FM 9 (Server Advanced & Client). The main change should be the use of web publishing, as we do have about 600 students, which only should have read/print/search-only access to the databases. There are just a few users allowed to change the data (they will have FM Pro 9) and somtimes we have temporary staff, which should be able to change the data by webaccess. The "server" is an Mac OS X 10.5.2, Dual 1.25GHz G4, 2 GB RAM. FM Server is installed on the local HD, the databases are saved on a second independent Raid 5. For the test, I've uploaded the contact database which has the most record…

We are using FMS 8.x (latest update) on Mac OS 10.4.11 with 3 databases to serve 5 local FMP 7.x clients all on Macs. Everything was working fine for several months but today only 1 client at a time is able to connect - any of the 5 can connect but only one at a time. We have reinstalled FMS, set all permissions, etc. We opened each file in FMP, after closing FMS, and did a Save As to remove potential corruption. Still no luck. I am told (I am not onsite) that after the Open Remote process at each client a dialog box asks for guest vs. reg. user which is a new occurrence. What is going on and how do we correct it?

I set up a Filemaker 8 Server om Windows XP in the summer of 2006. It has been running peacefully ever since. However, now we need to change the configurations, and neither I nor the Windows server administrator can remember the password we used for the Filemaker Server Admin login. Is there any way to reset the password without having to de- and reinstall the entire server? We have local access to the files of the server. I would be very thankful for any assistance! best regards, Aron Ambrosiani
