I have a system running 38 files and now want to be able to run it to another building about 50 meters apart. What is the best way to go about this? I will need a pretty reliable connection and speed (the application is up to 80MB and rising!), I have never done this before and am unsure of the best way to do it in FM. All comments gratefully received, Mark

I've just tried to open one of my FM dbs via Timbuktu dialup (Mac OS9 both computers, FMP 6.04 on both) and it won't recognize/accept my password which includes characters generated by typing with the "Option" key held down. Has anyone had this trouble before, and if so, is there a workaround that doesn't involve changing all my passwords on all my files? Thanks, Murray

I need to know how 2 users at different locations can access a file maker db with full scripting functionallity not with a web browser that limits scripts but with file maker pro application . Is it possible to have the same scripts functionalitty from remote locations compared with what you can do in a LAN? I just need to know the basic steps please. Help really appreciated. By the way I am trying a G5 with 10.3 working like server with a full time ADSL link at 256kbps with a static IP. What is needed for accesing the DB from a distant location using filemaker appart from using open remote and writting the server static IP? Something is not working because the server i…

Hi, I'm new to FM Pro having just purchased it. My business partner has a copy of the Mac version 6 and I have the Windows version 6. We want to share a common database with one another that we can both access and update from our separate locations. We both have broadband and we also have a domain that is hosted. I understand that you can use the remote hosting feature, but what we want is to be able to access the file independently. We won't be using the file at the sametime. I've placed the fp5 file on our ftp site and made sure the permissions are set properly. I created a Network Neighborhood location for our FTP site that allows me to use it as…

Hello The company I work for is looking at linking its 2 remote offices with its main office so that everyone shares the one FM database which is based at head office. The 2 remote offices are about 200 miles apart from one and other. And we would also like to be able to log in from our homes at night. This could increase the user access to 12 at Head office, 5 at Remote sites and a possible 5 from there homes. We are all Mac based 9.2 and 10.2 and will be using Filemaker Pro 6 + FM Server. I have checked broadband availability and it will be available mid October 2003. Is this the best route for us to take? ADSL, iSDN or Other Do you have any inform…

I have a problem using Timbuktu Pro to connect to a FileMaker database when I try to connect with a computer using Windows. The computer I connect to uses Mac OS9 and filemaker 5.5. When I start FileMaker on the remote computer Timbuktu shuts down because of an unexpected error. It is strange because It works great working with all software on the remote computer except for FileMaker. I have tried using both Windows ME and XP, but i still cant use FileMaker on the remote computer. Has anyone else experienced the same problem? //Greger

I am trying this post in a different forum as I have not had satisfactory responses in the past. We have five servers Mac/PC running FMS 5.03 and 5.5. Recently we have had the tow PC servers (Dell Poweredge 600sc, P4, Win 2000 Server) drop the host name from the FM network. We have had the same happen to a Mac (G4 tower, OS 9.1), but not for a long time. To fix problem, we have to restart the server. Occurence is random and connected client are not effected. Have spoken to FileMaker, but they won't admit it is their problem. As clients already connected are not effected, it cannot be a hub/switch or NIC issue. I surmise that FM networking is failing to broadcast…

Using FM 5.5v2 client on small network. One database setup as multi-user TCP/IP hosted on one Mac running OS 10.2.6. IP address set to a valid manual address. None of the other computers (PC's & Macs), all with FM 5.5v2, on the network can't see it being hosted. Acting like port 5003 is blocked, but this is internal to the network. Not able to find the router in the time that I had there. Not accessible via web interface. Was told the router is 5-10 years old, but no one knows how to configure it, the password, or even where it's located physically. But that may not be where the problem lies, so I don't know if I should even bark up that tree. As a qui…

I have a FM Server on a 1meg SDSL LAN to which remote users on standard DSL connections happily use. One of my remote users recently moved to North Wales where standard DSL is not accessible so I set up a satellite DSL service believing that this would be the solution for him to connect to the server via IP. I did this as I knew nothing about latency issues which now prove to be a major problem as the database takes 10 times longer to open than it did over ISDN. Does anybody know of an affordable solution to this? I have spoken to a couple of companies who are developing software which improves the latency issues on a Mac by reducing the TCP/IP header compress…

All, I've posted this query here as I think it has more to do with my internet configuration rather than serving fm. Anyway here goes... I've recently 'invested' in an ADSL connection. The new modem [speedTouch 350] works perfectly for browsing/email and is assigned a dynamic IP by my ISP. The modem serves an ethernet network. I'm running OSX. Now I need to serve my FM dbs to the web. I know the dynamic ip will mean that I don't have a static site, but I can get around this by using the re-direction technique provided by no-ip.com as suggested in a previous post. The problem seems to be in directing incoming web connections to the web server rather tha…

I have a client who has about 14 elderly Macs networked together using a 24 port hub. Recently one of their colleagues changed over to a new IBM PC, with Windows XP Professional installed. She has a static IP address assigned by the DSL provider, and DSL is uplinked through the hub and works fine at her computer. Everyone else gets their IP address through DHCP and has no problems. The company is using a Blue & White G3 running Filemaker Server. Our problem is that after loading the Windows FM Pro on her PC we cannot get it to "see" the FM Pro Server files or the network printers. All of the Macs are set up running TCP/IP for Filemaker Pro. I have talked to IBM, to Fi…

Hello all- After upgrading to FM server 5.5 and FM pro 5.5, I had some difficulty creating my opener file. In my script the step: Open [Mydb.fp5(*)] would show the asterisk rather than the IP address of my host, regardless of whether or not I checked save relative path. The users that are physically in the same office with me were able to use this to connect to the server. However, users outside of my office would get an error =100 (file not found). The only way that I was able to get FM to insert the actual IP address of my server (rather than the asterisk) was to create this script from one of the off-site client computers. Does anyone know …

I need some advice please. I am using FM Server v5.5 on an Xserver running OS10.2.1. We are on a firewall protected NT4 LAN. We have 2 remote sites that want to be able to access the server's databases through our fire wall. We currently do not allow any ports through our firewall(other than our website). We have a sonic firewall. I have read some posts here that specify opening port 5003 and setting up NAT on the router on the network. For some reason, I can no longer get the DIal Phone script step to work. I get the "Hang up you modem" box, but nothing happens. I know the modem in my B/W Mac G3-350, running OS 9.2, is working, because I can send faxes with it. This feature was working until I had to do a disk rebuild (from the bottom up - new installation of all OS and application files). The modem is set up as ATQ0V1E1S0=0, Prefix is DT (I'm using this on private line), Hang Up is +++ATH, speed is set at 28800 (highest one available in FMP 4.0). It's frustrating because I have grown very accustomed to this neat time saving feature. Anyone know why this problem happened?

A friend has just told me about no-ip. Thought it might be useful to anyone wanting to share FMPRO files over TCP/IP with a dynamic ISP allocated IP address. Go to www.no-ip.com for all the info. It is free and basically allows you to set up a domain name such as fmproserver.no-ip.info which means that your users will always be able to log onto the host even when your IP address is routinely changed by reconnecting.

Hi! I'm new to this forum, but from what I've read so far, you look like a great group. I'm designing a job tracking/workflow solution using FM Pro and web companion to be used on an intranet. The maximum number of IP connections is 10, but ideally I'd like about 15. Unfortunately, as I'm sure you all know, I can't just buy additional seats. In the on-line help, it states that the maximum number of connections is 10, but under certain conditions, you can have up to 25 connections with a single shared file with that number decreasing as the number of shared files increases. What it doesn't tell me is "What are the conditions!!!"??? Does anyone know how I wou…

I was wondering if anyone might know why the following is happening: I have a database that is accessed by a few users (2-3) on a Windows 2000 server (db resides) and Windows 98 (Client O/S). This database has a relationship with an images db. The problem lies when the file is opened by any user (client or server becomes the host) not all the records appear in the database. Then whenever the hosted file is opened by another user (a Guest of the Host) all the records are visible??? The password used to open the file is full access and NTFS and sharing permissions are full control as well. - Does anyone have an idea as to why and what could be causing the problem?…

I am running server 5.5 on W2K Server with db files and 50 + users (all internal). Occasionally the ability to see the list of db's in the "host view" is lost. Users can still get to the list by specifing the host's ip address. The situation is corrected only by a re-boot of the server. This on happens every infrequently and I'm not sure I can associate an event with occurance. Question? (well two actually) can the FM server be "re-freshed" without a re-boot or stopping the service? And, is there any method by which time in the "send message to all" dialog can be extended beyond 30 seconds (other than the disconnect notice which allows longer time). Thx

Just got back from a client site where they have recently installed a two-way satellite internet connection. The dealer who installed it normally does satellite TV installations, and this was his first ever datacom installation. So, he was on the phone to the ISP a lot trying to get things configured. Results were disappointing. Speed is barely any better than the old 56K modem/router setup. In fact, loading of web pages is actually worse. The ISP says the minimum average file download speed should be 200kb/sec and as high as 2000kb/sec. The best we got was 20kb/sec. Obviously, something is seriously wrong. Has anyone had any experience with these systems, and …

I have FMP server 5.0 running on a win2k server box. We use it internally (within the LAN) successfully. We are now opening offices across the country and we need them to be able to connect to our databases. A fourth computer (Win 98) can no longer see the database after drive was reformatted and Win98 reinstalled. The Win2000 computer can see a local database hosted on the Macintosh. I am stumped. Hello all, I have a growing relational database system I am building for my own start - up company. Soon I expect to have it hosted remotely so my partner and I can both access it from home. I'm new to web publishing, am trying to test my first application using trial version of FM 5.5 with CDML and localhost on a PC. I can make changes in my HTML editor (CoffeeCup) and bounce back and forth to browser (usually netscape but same happens with I.E.) but there comes a point when I enter http://localhost in the address box and it just sit there with the status message "resolving host localhost". The browser continues to run SLOW until I shut down FileMaker. Restarting the machine doesn't resolve the problem. Thanks.

We have a user that has been using FM Pro for several years. recently, we needed to move this uyser to another building. We have network connectivity through a Cisco wireless access point, and a wireless bridge. Since the user is connected to a switch, and then into the wireless bridge, no changes were made to her network settings. Yet, whenever she attempts to access ANY files she receives an error message stating that the file is not multi-user or the host could not be found. She is able to browse to the directory where the files are located (which is in the building she moved from). She can also access the files when she is logged into a computer in the main buil…

I just upgraded our databases from 4.1 to 5.5 and installed one new and one upgraded 5.5 on the LAN. We use AirPort to network. The main machine has the FP5 files on it. The folder in which the files are stored is shared with the other computers on the network. When a machine on the net shares this folder with my main system, it can see the files in the folder just fine. All of the files are marked multi-user and not hidden and all are sharing over TCP/IP. But any attempt to open a file which is already open on the other machine results in an error saying the file is single-user or the host can't be found on the network. Clearly the host is found; it's sharing the fil…

Remote office clients connect across 56k frame-relay; using TCP/IP. 4 minutes to open med-size DB, 15 minutes to close the DB. I don't expect great speed at 56k, but any suggestions on "performance tuning" of FM5.5 server and database to help this? This seems extremely slow. Probably will upgrade to 128k connection, but still would like optimized performance.

Pardon the posting in more than one subheading. I am trying to set up my remote users such that they aren't coming into the filemaker server 5.0.3 on the default port of 5003. All I am changing is port address translation for port 5003. Setting it so that 9999=5003, both UDP and TCP. When this is done, it doesn't transmit the DB list. If feels like a UDB problem, but I have a sneaky suspicion that FM isn't able to handle this for some unknown reason. Any thoughts, Ideas? experiences of your own? clients coming in using both 5.5 and 5.0 on 9.1, and 10.1.1 (macs only, so far). Server is OS 9.2.2, running 5.0.3. thanks, st

I ran into a wird problem. I Have a Fmp 5.0 Unlimited hosting a native fmp 5.0 DB (created by FMP 5 Unlimited) on the backside off a router/firewall,(filtring all, exept port 21, 80, 5003) with some nating. I found this info in the FMP 5.5 help file under "firewall" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- " FileMaker Pro shows only the databases hosted on your local TCP/IP subnet. To open a database on a different TCP/IP subnet, in the Hosts dialog box, click Specify Host and enter the host computer's IP address or domain name. ? If the guest is outside your LAN's firewall, blocking must be removed from port number 5003 b…

We have currently in our small business 2 Win2000 servers(same build and version) with filemaker 5.5 installed and running. Both servers have been setup almost identically but only one server shows up in the local hosts list when trying to connect from a win98 pc client. There is no conflict whatsoever regarding ip addresses we run an internal 10.10.10.x network and both servers are gated through the same firewall. The user accounts are the same on both servers and we have confirmed that both filemaker programs are identically setup regarding user and protocols(TCP/IP) and multiusersharing. We can ping both servers without trouble and theres no difference in the routing…

PROGRAM PREFERENCES CONTINUALLY FORGOTTEN I have set up a FMP database on the TCP/IP network here at work. There are three shared files hosted by a dedicated machine. As we all know, for users to access these shared files across the network the 'user name' and proper 'network type' must be set in general preferences. The database works great when FMP chooses to remember this info. However, FMP5.0.3 often forgets the these pesky program preferences . . . username field is 'blank' and network protocol is 'none' . . . How can I ensure that fmp remembers its program settings?

perhaps a really stupid problem: FileMaker unlimited is online. Web companion is running ok. everything works over a browser. But now we want to directly open the database with another filemaker via TCP/IP from another place via web. By clicking "hosts" an putting the IP-Adress, no connection can be built. A Ping works correctly. Is there a solution : Thank U

I use Filemaker 5.0V3 5 PC in network : A windows NT (with the bases) 2 local PC using windows 98se 2 distant PC using FMP 5 connected via 3 Elsa Lancom 800 isdn routers I have a problem once the connection is established, the routers does not hang up after time-out expires. I have very heavy telephone bills (I saw 5003 packets go from server to distant PC preventing routers to quit). the only (bad ) solution I found is to quit filemaker after using the base (but the base is big and the connection to server needs 8mn at 64Kb/mn to load) thank in advance pierre-henri

I would like to know if anyone knows how to connect FM pro 5.0 to FM pro 5.0. I saw this demonstrated once. You were able to specify the host ip address and this let the user into a hosted DB on another server thru my DSL connection. I have port 591 opened up and I can access this with-in my network. How can I setup this so I can access form home? RET

This is very odd.... I just created a new DB and set it for Multi user. But it is not showing up on certain computers... Here is the scenario : We have 11 computers networked to a server. At the moment only 8 of them are on. The weird thing is that only 5 of those computers can see the host of the file and can share. We own 7 copies of Filemaker and 6 of those computers have their own filemaker and rest share the last filemaker since they are hardly used, and they cannot simoultaneously be used. But the computer i'm on can't see it. I checked everythig. All the computer has their own serial numbers (so nothing illegal.. hehe). They all have their own I.P. address…

Hi- We have a very small office (under 10 people), and have been using FMP as long as I can remember. We recently upgraded to 5 (right before 5.5 was released, go figure). Since we don't have an extra Mac lying around, the office manager hosts. Needless to say, the performance is less than stellar- lots of crashes, speed of host computer is horrible, etc. It finally occurred to me (after reading it in the FMP 5 manual) that we could use the never-touched Gateway PC to play host. I don't have the software for this yet- I'm still trying to convince my boss that this is our best bet. So here are my questions (sorry for the long intro): 1. Will there be a problem using a…

My vpn connection to the office will pull a file off the computer at around 250k ( cable modem on both ends ). Hoever, when using FM over the vpn I only recieve around 40k. Same computers same connection. I know that graphics slow things down but it seems that the KB/S would be the same but the end result would be slower with lots of graphics. In other words even with out the graphics I would still be only recieving 40K. If anyone has any ideas on the subjedt I would appreaciate it. Raif

I have FMPro 4 running on three machines: one host machine (database set to multiuser) and two clients. When both clients work on the same database opened on the host, the host repeatedly brings the message (translated from German Version) : "Waiting for client xy to respond... I can only click "Disconnect". So one client is disconnected. How can I avoid this nasty problem? Thanks Martin

I cannot get anything to show in the host dialog box. I am networking 2 pc's using 10/100 cards and 3Com hub. I am completely new to this network stuff. One pc uses Win98se and the other WinME. I have set the files to Multi user or multi user hidden. I open the files on one pc then go to the other to open as guest, I have tried on both pcs. Using FMP5.0v3 with unique serial numbers. I can see the printers and other files and folders on the network. When I start FMP and select open then Hosts I get an empty dialog box, I click the locals hosts but get nothing. I expect I am doing something totally wrong and probably missing something simple. Any help appreciated.

AAAAAAAAAAARGH! i'm hosting an fm database via FM server, but computers in different zones can't see the host at all. is it a problem with filemaker that it can't see hosts in different subnets? I checked the connectivity otherwise and everything seemed to be working. I'm running the server on NT, and the client machines are both Mac and PC running FM5. I'm using TCP/IP as the network protocol in FM. Is there anything I can do? thanks, Ati, jedi master

Hi, A client of mine is running a solution since one year. His set-up is NT server running FMP5 and 12 PCs (win95 & 98). A couple of weeks ago someone in the company decided to doanload a Service Pack Upgrade from Microsoft and installed it on the server (great idea!! this person is Not computer litterate and just was on the MS site and thought it was a cool thing to do!!!). Since then the clients do not "see" the host files anymore. I have reinstalled FMP, but nothing. The solution for me is to install the files on another machine, then no problem. Any suggestions?? Thanx, Steven

I have set-up Mac/PC soilutions before and never had this problem. It usually works fine without any configuration. Any ideas of where to check ?? Thanks, Steven

Hi All, I've installed a FM pro server behind a firewall that can be accessed successfully by FM clients from private (non firewalled) locations, so I know the "server" firewall is allowing outside requests in. My problem involves client machines installed in commercial premises behind another firewall ("client" firewall). Do I need to convince the IT staff to open a port on the "client" firewall so the requests originating from client machines can get out to the FM pro server? Initial discussions with these guys have met with much trepidation, they are very concerned about possible security breaches. Any help with this will be greatly appreciated. Feel free to …

Hi guys - Need some help / suggestions. I'm trying to punch through a firewall to a Filemaker Server at a clients, who has a DSL modem, a static IP, and an internet gateway software to route internet internally on his network. According to Filemaker Article 104289, you assign Port 5003 to the server, and allow both UDP and TCP traffic to it. But according to Filemaker Article 106727, this is not possible since Filemaker server cannot utilize Network Address Translation or Proxy type addresses. The only real solution I can see is to put the server computer on its on own real world IP, not firewalled, which is a bit outrageous to my customer. Has anyone else run Filem…

I have two Powerbooks (Pismo and G4) which need simultaneous access to six reasonably hefty FMP databases. As well as FMP, the books will continuously run productivity applications (Office, Xpress, Dreamweaver, Photoshop etc). I have a 7100/66/48Mb running MacOS 8.5 that I could set up as a dedicated FMP Server. Is it up to the job or do we need more powerful hardware? Should I be running FMP Server or can I get away with the standard edition? Would it help to downgrade the OS -- if so, to what? Would I be better to simply share between the Powerbooks? (this could create a problem when the machine running the database is out of the building). If the 7100 is up to the…

I am looking for ways to securely connect to our company databases from outside the firewall. The remote users do not have fixed IP addresses, so IP number based filtering at the firewall is not useful. In any case I would be happier knowing the password and data are encrypted. Is anyone connecting to FileMaker securely over TCP/IP? What are you using? My first try was tunneling TCP/IP over a Secure Shell connection (using MacSSH). This almost works, I can contact the FileMaker Server through the firewall but can not see any of the databases. My guess from browsing the FileMaker Knowledge Base is that FileMaker Pro 5 is using UDP to obtain the list of databases, and onl…

Hey everybody, I've got a relational database of about 12 files installed on a network and everybody loves it. Only problem is, now they want to use it over a T1 connection with partial bandwidth to remote offices but it takes forever to work. Is FileMaker not designed for this kind of networking? Is this happening because of the relational nature of the DB? Is there an obvious fix to this problem? Thanks a bunch, Dave

Got a network of 2 iMacs up and running yesterday via a 5 port Linksys ethernet hub. The Filemaker hosting to the guest worked fine until they dialed out to AOL from the guest. After that, the guest could not reconnect to the Filemaker host. They went back in an reset the TCP/IP control panel exactly as it was before (when it worked). Then, when opening Filemaker, upon clicking on host, the files being shared from that host do not come up in the dialogue. Does the swicth over o AOL-link change some other configuration setting that I'm not aware of? Any other ideas? Thanks.

Currently we are networking fm pro 4.1 on an iMac, a iBook, and a PC. We are connected trhough ethernet using TCP/IP. We also need to connect to the internet using PPP from time to time on all the different computers. Our trouble is that inorder to make this work we have to switch tcp/ip from ethernet to PPP inorder to dial up and get connected. By doing this we loose our connection networking within our office and are forced to restart FM Pro. Is there a easy solution to this problem, or what should I do to fix this problem?

We have installed a solution that makes use of some heavy calculations to figure out time intervals. The solution runs on FileMaker Server 5. The network that the files are on is rather large, and they are getting unacceptable speed problems. For instance, filling in a row of fields in a portal is taking on the order of two minutes, whereas filling it in locally (files opened on local hard drive) or on a smaller network, there is no time delay at all. They are on 100BaseT, as are our tests. One of the things I'm going to try to do is see if I can alter the calculations to work faster. But a clue to the degraded network speed was the IP addresses of the server and th…
