We recently upgraded and have a Toshiba SG20 we are looking to sell cheap. It comes with 2 drives, Wireless card and is preloaded with Fm server 5.5(Legit Copy) along with the Web Browser Admin Interface. Was a great box for us. Anyone needing Fm Server 5.5 I would reccomend this box. If interested please leave a post/pm me here or contact me via email. Cheers, Michael

  2. Help! I may be panicking needlessly; God, I hope so. I thought a file didn't update its date/timestamp (when being served) until the file was closed. I just looked at our file (through Admin). Both services are running (normal). Database status is normal on all. But the date/timestamp says 45 minutes ago and we have NOT stopped serves or closed the databases! I feel my fingers going weak. Please tell I'm wrong and a served file sometimes updates this date/timestamp even when not closed. Please tell me that. It performed a backup at 4pm. The last User signed off at 5:11. The timestamp is 5:15. L

We have Filemaker Server 8.0v4 running on a very fast Windows 2003 machine w/ 2gig of ram. I have 2 primary filemaker files being served on this box which are 600mg & 800mg each. Every 3 hours we backup the data using the Filemaker Server backup schedule. When the backup runs the machine bogs down and runs very slow. Even the FM clients run extremely slow in Filemaker. This lasts about 5-6 minutes before normal speed/operation resumes. Is there anything that we can do about this? I have called Filemaker Support and they didn't have any suggestions. They didn't even provide me with a general idea of how long the backup should take given our file sizes. …

  4. When closing the laptop or when the laptop goes to sleep Filemaker doesn't find it's connection anymore. It works fine on the desktops but the laptops show the error message: "communication with the host was interrupted and could not be re-established. (-3284)". Can you tell me if using Fm server 8 resolves this problem? Other programs like the organizer calendar don't have this connection problem, when you open your laptop the connection is immediately re-established. Thank you.

Help! I have just installed FMS 5.5 and copied the database that we want to share to the FMP directory. I opened the database directly and set it to multiuser, closed it, and restarted the FMS service (Windows Server 2003). The database opens fine on the first client (FMP 6.0v4) but I get a "# of licenses exceeded" error when I try to open the DB on additional computers. Any idea what I am doing wrong or leaving out? ~Bruce

Hi, we have a Windows Server 2003 Standard and I have installed FileMaker Server 8v4. I have put a file in the databases folder on the server, started the service and have made sure that the proper ports are open on our router...although this should not matter since our workstations are on the same subnet. But when I try to open the file from our workstation, I can't see the file (clicking on remote, and typing in the ip does not show anything) Yet if I open the file as shared on one of our workstations, I can see it being shared on that machine. The windows server also has FileMaker Server 5.5 installed and working on it. When I stop the FileMaker Serv…

Hi, Im getting a 500 Server error when I try to view the fmi/config and fmi/iwp pages. Is there a reason to this? I am using Fm Server 8 on a G5 iMac using the built in Apache with PHP on. I had it working a few months ago but the server had a 'fit' and it had to be reinstalled and since then I cant get it working again. A quick reply would be helpful as my time is limited. Thanks.

  10. Folks, I'm tasked with migrating data from FM Server 8 to SQL Server 2005. I was trying to use the ODBC driver for FM Server, and the SQL Server 2005 Data Import functionality. I keep having odd and inexplicable OLE and COM errors when trying to move the data (less than 100'000 rows - really not a huge amount). Any ideas? Is there another way to do this efficiently (on about 25 tables or so)? What can I check or tweak to make the import work? I have the same problems when trying to migrate the FM data to MS Access 2003, too. Any help would be highly appreciated !

I'm probably missing something obvious here... FMS 8.0 on Win won't seem to follow shortcuts to open db's. The help file and admin guide says I can put shortcuts to databases in the default Data/Databases folder, and it will open those files. It doesn't. No errors in the log, so it appears to be not even attempting to open them. If I put the same files in that same default folder (the files themselves rather than shortcuts) they open fine. Same thing if I add their current location as the alternate default folder. But I'd rather use the shortcut method if I could get it to work. Thanks for any help...

Okay - I have gotten down to the root of my problem. Can someone tell me if/how I can fix it, please? The problem of the unexpected end of file error seems to be due to a Java incompatibility. I found Win boxes on which identical versions of IE are running. The one using the java plugin 1.5.0_06 works; the one using 1.5.0_09 doesn't. Is there any way to update my servers to gain compatibility with the newer plug-in. I know nothing about how java works.

I am running 5.5 unltd on OS 9.2. I have a Webstar 4.5 (apache) front door that connects to a separate filemaker box via the web connector. For some reason calls to filemaker from browsers have started to produce an end-of-file error. It is intermittent, and possibly fixed by restarting the browser that is being used to access filemaker. May occur more with Firefox. I haven't done anything differently to/with the app or the databases, except that I increased the memory allocated to FM5.5u. Any thoughts?

They open up normally with FileMaker Pro, with the exception of one. When I open FM Server, the FM Server window shows no list of our Files, which it usually does, and it indicates 0 Files (which is strange), and 0 Guests (none are logged on to it, however). Hi all Yesterday, during a routine scheduled backup, my filemaker server 5.5 decided to crash - see attached pics. We have a backup schedule that writes backups every hour, and this is rotated between 3 different locations so there will always be 3 backups of the work done in the last 3 hours. This has been working fine until now - for years. Looking through the event logs, I saw that the crash occurred while the server was trying to backup the largest fp5 file which is 270MB in size. Any ideas about why this could have happened ? My sysadmin colleagues assure me that the hardware and network setup are not at fault and are all good quality, although…

  29. We just upgraded our FM server from version 7 to 8.0v4. Everything seemed to go successfully until it came time to open files. I have 89 files being hosted. 85 of those files open fine. However, I have four that won't open. When I look at the FM Server logs it shows errors for these files stating that they could not be opened because they may be damaged. I have run each file through FM 8 Recover. They still will not open in FM Server 8. They open up fine directly through FM Pro 8 and 8.5. The database that had to be restored is not the same as the one that is not listed. I have already stopped FMP server and rebooted the computer and restarted FMP but still the database is not listed. Hi, I am charged with setting up a FMS8 on a Win2k3 server on an Active directory. I plan to use external authentication. Clients will access data using version 8.5 published on Citrix. In the guide it says to "disable Access Control Lists and do not use ACL file permissions". So should users not have access to the data and program folders? Is this because the FM services control access? Also, what will be the name of the FM service(s) listed in Windows services? I will post questions regarding external authentication in that forum. Thanks in advance.

The reason for this is that the dbs need to be accessed remotely, and the networking guy said that the network performace would be badly affected within the office (when accessed from the outide clients) unless FMS wasn't on a separate DSL line. I am curious what exactly does the backup do?. Does it write the file in a contiguous format or just an exact copy? Does it do any maintenance while writing such as compacting? The reason I am asking is we had a problem file last night that wouldn't open after starting the service. I restored the file from the previous backup and that opened fine. Is it a good practice to restore files from backups periodically or just do the file maintenance on them periodically (compact and optimize)? Is there a difference? Any input would be appreciated.

Hi, In addition to our schedule backup, we use to do do another backup from a workstation by copying the files from the server's shared folder into the workstation's hdd without issue. We needed to reinstall FMS5.5 for some reason. Now we are are getting this error when we do backup from the workstation: "The process can't access the file because another process has locked a portion of a file." Note that there is no active user(s) during the backup. Please help. Thanks in advance, Garry

I have some databases hosted on Server 5.5v4, MacOS 10.3.9. When you click "Stop Server," it never will stop, just says it will take several minutes, but never finishes. Rather than force quit, I restart the Mac (from the menu), but when it comes back, it says the DB's are damaged, even to open them in FM 6.0v4. I always recovered, then imported into a good clone, not using a recovered database. I have formatted the hard drive, installed a new 10.3, upgraded it to 10.3.9, installed a fresh Server, upgraded it to v4, problem persists. Any ideas???

  57. I recently installed OS X Server 10.4 on a G4 933Mhz. 1GB RAM machine, brought it to 10.4.8, installed FMS8v2 and Web publishing. Downloaded 8.0v4 fms & fmsweb updaters. Stopped the Server from FMS Admin (on the local host), ran the server updater, it tells me it is going to do its work on the correct volume, but the updater is "not responding". After this, I cannot connect to the server with FMS Admin: "Connection Failure". Could not connect to FileMaker Server "(localhost)" (127.0.0.1)" .... until reboot. I've rebooted, re-downloaded the installer, etc., many times. I later tried upgrading the WPE (after stopping that service), and that updater worked…

Hi guys A client is using FMS on Windows (not sure of the OS but it is Server of some sort). I only use Windows XP for testing and have not come across the '_MACOSX' folder in the Databases list before. What is this folder, why does it appear and why are all files closed? (screen grab attached). The error log says "Database ._WI_IF.fp7 could not be opened: not a FileMaker Pro database." They also have an issue with a file not opening, but a compacted copy seems to work ok (I've told them not to use a recovered file!) Thanks in advance for any help.

We still use FM 5.5 with our clients, hey if it works.... I just did an upgrade for a client from 4.x to 5.5 because they just went from older iMacs to the snazzy cool pre-intel iMacs. I upgraded them to 5.5 on the workstations (10.4.8?) and server (which is still running 9.2). The problem: They keep getting dumped. The workstations keep getting dropped from the server. When it happened (while I was on-site) I thought that the workstation had gone to sleep and dropped the connection. We went through and set so that the hard drive does not sleep and the TCP/IP connection doesn't drop. I heard that this may be an issue with some versions of tiger. If this is…

I've been able to open their FM files remotely (me as a FM client) and work on them without a problem until their server froze up a few days ago. Some issues with OS X 10.4.8 are being reported, and I'm wondering if these affect FileMaker? 1. 4D has found a serious calculation bug: http://fmforums.com/forum/showtopic.php?fid/144/tid/181094 2. Folks are reporting other calculation issues. Since 10.4.8 supposedly "Improves the accuracy of Rosetta numerics and addresses Altivec translation issues on Intel-based Macs." it's plausible that something has indeed changed. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304200 Is FileMaker affected? Anyone out there have a self-auditing solution that would catch any math changes?

I need to know how to configure FileMaker Server 7 to shutdown and restart on a weekly schedule. I'm guessing we will have to create a script to do this but I don't know where or how to start. I'm not IT so if you need to you can dumb it down a little. If not we have an IT guy in-house that I can involve.

When I enable the secure connections option in the FMP Server Admin (and perform the required restart), my databases no longer show up in the server admin or to a FMP8 client. The event log shows that SSL is enabled, and the databases have been opened. These databases all work fine when the secure connections option is not enabled. When I look back at the FMP Server8 Install Log, it references a directory called /Filemaker Server/Tools/fmiCA and some cert files being generated there. I'm running IWP services on an ISP-based FM8 server advanced. My question is about global fields which count visitors to the site and selected pages (these fields are a related side table). The fields are incremented in the scripts used to navigate to pages. Can a large number of simultaneous users ever throw off these counts? Every few weeks one or two of my counts are jumping off by many thousands.

Have you had stability problems with FM Server and Mac OS X? I had big trouble with OS X 10.4 thru 10.4.2 and FM Server Advanced 7v2 and 7v3. My machine would become unresponsive every 2-3 weeks, requiring me to force-reboot and restore from the latest backup. I've been running OSX 10.4.3 and FMSA7v3 now and have 56 days of uptime without issue. So if you are looking for a stable combination, I'd suggest you try this.

By "robot user" I mean a filemaker client that is connected to a filemaker server which processes various tasks automatically by staying in a ScriptMaker loop. Suddenly getting the error " cannot be opened because it would exceed the host's capacity. Try again later." And, on my FMS machine, two fmserverd daemons are definitely running. Any ideas why I'm seeing this odd behavior? Thanks very much

Any help sincerely welcome New (first time) installing FM server on a PC running Win2000 Pro. Installation went OK - and the sample files are open and being served across the LAN. So far so good. Then loaded a file developed in 8.5 Adv on a mac which will not be opened by FM Server. It stays "CLOSED". While other files are running fine. The file is set for Multi-user TCPIP sharing turned on. I suspect it may be a permissions problem, but all of the read & write boxes are checked for all users & groups in properties. Any idea what things might be keeping FM server from being able to open this file? Thanks again!!

In fact choosing yes to continue seems to be the right answer. The files invloved are often different and were all "clean room developed" (never crashed- recovered etc). Recovery seems to do nothing to help. FM is generally very clear about a dammaged file and won't let you in untill it thinks it is fixed. Any ideas what this message means?

  96. Hi all, We have FMS 5.5 installed on an OS X machine, with about 15 clients (mostly running OS X, but a few running XP) which connect. The way we normally go in is to click open File -> Open Remote. While this is still working, there is suddenly a tremendous delay in the amount of time it takes to load up the file list. Whereas before it would load in 10 seconds or so, it now takes a minute or more. This just started today. We haven't had any other network issues, and I tried stopping FMS and restarting the machine. The load is also quite low - 0.10 or less. Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this delay?
