This must be easy, but I just can't figure out the best way to do it. I'm creating an invoicing db, and I want to assign the next sequential invoice number in a field. Like this: 1. New record created 2. invoice_number field is populated with the next available invoice number (largest number from this field in the entire data base + 1) Is there an easy way?

I've been using FMPro for a while with no formal training, so I am a bit of a beginner when it comes to a lot of the topics discussed here, so please bear with me. I have two related databases. One is a job database that contains all the processing details of each of the production runs we have. Each record in this database is called a Shop Order, and each has a SO# which is a serialized number auto-entered on creation. I have a DB with shared data and four tabs below. Each Tab contains 8 Rows by 8 Columns of unique data. The information is used to calculate delivered costs for shipment to 8 different locations from one central point. Each Tab has a field that represents the base cost, without freight, for all the calculations and is placed outside the rows. My problem: 1. I am trying to put lnks to various documents into container fields in a database. (with links instead of storing actual documents, I can then click to open the documents in whichever software they were created in - all of mine are either Excel or Word.). As long as I don't shut down FileMaker (8.5 Advanced), everythng works fine. [color:red]If I close out the file and come back later, the links are [color:red]GONE!!..... Is there a way that I can set up a time field so that if I enter a time of 930 that FMP will automatically format it to 09:30. or 1337 would auto format to 13:37, etc, etc. I can easily do this in (dare I say it) Access using input masks (as I can with phone numbers...but I digress) but I have not found a way to automate this annoying little data entry task in FMP. I have a check box value list of whether a record is a bar or restaurant. Each bar or restaurant runs in one or many issues of the magazine. I would like to take a tally of which issues a bar or restaurant has run. The issue number changes every Thursday. So, 01/04/2007 the issue number will be 96 and Joe's Restaurant will be listed in that issue and in issues 97 and 99 but not 98. After doing a search on some other fields I might end up with 10-50 records found. What I would like to do is to get the numbers. But only one even if it is found in more than one record. I'm trying to create a report that will display a group of monthly transactions, a subtotal by month (summary field), and an average of the monthly subtotals. I can easily get the monthly subtotals by creating a summary, but as most of you know, you cannot create a summary field based on another summary field. Using the Average function on the monthly subtotal field doesn't work; and I've tried the GetSummary function with no luck. I know I can create a new table and set up a calculation to display the monthly average there, but I'd like to show the transactions, subtotals and average in the same table. Any ideas?

Hi, In a portal I have a numeric field where the user inserts a value ("Price per piece"), usually something like 1,30. In the Invoice it will turn out as 13,00 (not what I want!). If the value is inserted as 1.3 it turns out the way I want it to in the Invoice, ie 1,30. Obviously I want the user to be able to insert the value with a comma and not a dot. If they have a partner or spouse, then we enter the partner's full name in the field "partner" What I want to do is set up a calculation field called "Label Name." I want to use a summary field to display a running total in a report. As I add a record on the report the summary field goes blank and does not display the new total until I click on or script into that field. How do I make the field redisplay the new value without forcing the user to take some kind of action? Is this an unfortunate side effect of using a report type layout for data entry (I don't believe this is the case as I've just tested this in different layouts and it never seems to update the display properly)?

I checked the 'unique value' under validation tab to prevent user from recreating duplicates, but i believe the error buttons (Revert, Yes, No) that appear when validationg fails are very unuser-friendly. Some of the users are limited to be unable to delete or edit records, only add. Now the users of this database have asked if the entries can be placed at the top of the notes so the notes will always be sorted from most recent to oldest. Is this possible? I'm guessing these two don't work together. The attachment is a screenshot of my relationship graph and field definition. I have no issues with getting the correct data from the L_placement_episode_pt_current TO, but the data I get from the L_placement_episode_pt_current_pv TO is random and not what I was looking for. A workaround is that I can have a CALC field in the the L_placement_episode_pt_current TO looking to the other TO, but that seems too FM6 for me. I'm using getnthrecord because the the L_placement_episode_pt_current TO is sorted and I want the second record in the found set. Any suggestions?

Hello, I am building up database, which is based on list of employees. In every record (person), there are few (20?) of fiels with text and one container with photo. When i would like to add the photo (working on Macbook with iSight), I open up Photobooth, make photo, save the file to desktop, open it with Preview, crop it, and Copy and Paste to database. (i didn't find something else how I can grab picture directly to database with crop ability). But: now I have 60 records (60 persons, 60 photos) in database. Hello, I am trying to figure out how to total the numbers that show up in a portal. I have a file with land owner names and acreage they own and the location of their property. One landowner can own multiple properties and each property listing is a separate record. I have set up a portal that shows me each record with the acreage listed in each record, i.e. 1, 2.5, 3. Each acreage listed is a separate line in the portal. I would like to have a field in the portal that would list the total amount of acreage for each landowner. Is this possible? Thanks, MT

We currently have a database with thousands of records, each one with a container field containing a reference to a file on our OS X Panther Server. We'd like to be able to upgrade the server at some point and possibly change its name and IP address. Is there a way to run a calculation on every record to update the referenced file path to reflect the files' new location on the new server? We're an all-Mac shop and we're open to using plug-ins if that will make the job any easier.

I am trying to write a validation script to test whether any records in a found set have been modified. I defined a timestamp field that auto enters the modified time/date for the record. I used a loop to test for notempty fields. The problem is that the script acting upon the record, modifies it, and therefore autoenters a value in the field defeating the entire process. The employment history is stored on a table and I have a portal on the student layout that shows the employment history (I also use the portal to add new employers to the history). I've been trying to find out how to define a field that has an integer value that auto updates each time I create or delete a record. Each row below is a record in Filemaker for that field: 1 2 3 5 7 8 If I were to insert a record at 7, it would change the value of 7 to 8, and the value of 8 to 9 and automatically insert the value 7 at that record. If I were to delete record 7, record 8 would change its value to 7 in that field. How do I setup my field to have that characteristic?

Does anyone know how to lock or freeze a tap so it does not revert back to the default when you leave a page and come back to it. I have 3 tabs each is a different company, what I would like to do is have a pull down box the is the Final selector if you will for the page. It seems like this should be a simple calculation, but I haven't worked with FM for a while and have never done too much with calculations. What I need to do is define a Sales Tax field that says: If the Ship To State = MD, Sales Tax = Item Subtotal * .05. I can't seem to figure that out using the options in FM though. I am using FM8. If a field is a text type, and you are restricting it to a value list of "yes" and "no", is there a way of counting the number of records that have "yes" and also counting the number of records that have "no" ?

I have attached the file I am working on. I am looking to do a calculation for inventory purposes on yardage of fabric. There are two times we are entering in information and on the first time we enter data, we put the yardage ordered. The second time we enter data we put the yardage currently on the roll. I want a calculation that waits until I put the "starting quantity" to subtract the "yards" to get the calculated "balance remaining". Currently when I enter, say, 4 yards, it calculates -4 yards in the balance field and does not recalculate when I enter the starting quantity. Check it out and let me know. Thanks. FM.zip

Hi All, I've got a number of fields that hold stock item pricing. I want to dynamically change the number of decimal places displayed based on the amount each item is priced at eg. $1.00 as two decimal places, $0.0755 as three decimal places, etc. I can use an "If" statement to test but I'm not sure how to do the formatting. Can any body help me with a calculation to extract the middle character/s of a long number or a text string, eg, the 5th character in the number 12345678 or the 4th letter in stephen In both of the examples I will not know the contents of the number or text string, they will be different every time. I am trying to work out how to extract characters from a text string and paste them into separate fields from a calculation. The field data I am working with is 00:0D:93:6C:0C:7C which is actually a MAC, I want to extract each section into it's own field eg, 00 into field 1 0D into field 2 93 into field 3 6C into field 4 I can figure out the pasting bit myself, but what I'm struggling with is how to extract each part of the text string using a calculation? Is there a way to put leading zeros onto a number. Say I want a number to be 5 total digits and I need a decimal point. No number would be larger than 999.99 Examples of numbers desired: 004.00 050.25 007.75 127.00 I just need the left side filled with zeros to complete the 5 digit number. Thanks Lester

I have a simple text field on a layout that I want users to be able to type into, but I want to control how many lines they can write. I don't want them to be able to press return many times as that would make the text box too big on the printing layout. Is there a way to control this? I do see that I can control how many characters can go in a field, but that's not exactly what I'm thinking. Thanks.

I have a layout used for printing that has a header. It has 6 pages. On page six I do not want some of what is on the header to print. It would also be okay if the whole header didn't print. Is there a way to do this? Thanks

I'm building an image cataloging system and have a container field that houses a linked file. I'd like to have a field display the path to the linked file, so we can track where the image file is stored. I've looked and only been able to find reference to the database file path, and nothing about a file in a container field. Likewise, having a field display the files name would be wonderful too. I also have another "slave" set up, which is perpetually accessing the application through an FM8 client, to perform a few non-IWP functions. This setup has been working fine, until lately. I have 1200 people who have to do 4 tasks. I want to create a modification date for each of the tasks. I created 4 date fields with different names with the option of modification. Of course when I change one of the event scores all the dates change. I want to link the each date to one specific task. When I update the task for one person, I just want the date to change for the one task and the one person who retested the task not the entire group of 1200. For example, I do 15 push ups today. When I record that score for me, I want the date to modify to today's date (nothing will happen to the dates in the other three tasks) and I will be the only one the date will ch…

I can use a calc to round figures off to 1 whole number or to 2 decimal places using Round(fig1);2) or Round(fig2);0) But how can I round to the nearest 10? i.e a number of 459 will find 460 likewise 454 will find 450? Anyone with any ideas?? B

How do you force a field to retain it's formatting? Example copy from word or a web page and paste into FM Pro V7,8 & Advanced and it retains the font from the source. The Synchronise with field font option DOES NOT WORK!! Considering Filemaker Pro is all about data in and out there must be a solution without having to write a script for this. Any ideas?

Case ( UntilNextChange ≤ 3000 ; "Good" ; UntilNextChange ≥ 3001 ; "Service Soon" ; UntilNextChange > 4501 ; "Schedule for Service" ) The above is the function I created - it is to alert a tech when one of our support vehicles needs to be serviced. Problem is I need to make the second result calculate using a span of miles - 3001-4500. What is happening is when the miles are over 4501 - the text result still says Service Soon instead of Schedule for Service because the result holds true seeing the number in UntilNextChange is greater than or equal to 3001. Hello, I'm wondering if it is possible to have an auto serial number that covers two fields on two tables. I'm building a database to track the inventory in our lab. My database is has two tables with information of materials: Raw Chemicals and Biological Supplies. I have an "Auto-enter Serial, Can't modify auto" on the chemicals table and I was wondering if I can extend that to my biological supplies table. Hello, I'm working on an inventory database and I'm trying to get my summary fields to work. In the database are two tables. One is inventory transactions and the other is inventory summary. Inventory transactions is a list of everything that has been ordered. Date, Quantity, Stock Amount and the Name of what was ordered. Inventory summary is where the problems are. I would like to have a summary with total quantity (how many bottles are on the shelf) total Amount (quantity * stock amount, it is just an approx but that is good enough) sorted by Name. I am working on a solution for my school. In it, most fields have up to 20 repetitions. I have all the repetitions on the layout. However, I don't want the repetition (or the label for the field) to print if there is nothing in that specific repetition. Additionally, not all records have information entered in the same number of repetitions. For example, record 1 may have data entered in 5 repetitions while record 2 may have data entered in only 1 repetition. I know this is the matter of a simple calculation, but I'm going nuts trying to figure it out. Thanks so much for your help!!!

I have "Subtotal" defined as Sum(product line items: Item Total). My problem is, when I am entering an invoice the subtotal will not calculate until I click out of the "Product Line Items Portal" Any idea what I am doing wrong?

I have attached a file that I am making (or trying to). I know what I want to do but haven't got my "missing manual" in the mail yet. I want to have three tabs that show fields that are specific to the order status. For example when I go to master list tab, there will be all fields. When I go to the current orders tab, it will show the first 20 fields from left to right, but not the four to the far right. In the shipped tab, there will be the first ten and only the last four. How do I specify the layering (photoshop-style didn't quite work)? How do I make it so that the tab background extends down as I create a new record (CTRL + N)? FM.zip

In MS Access I can create a table of dates. I then join this to my bookings to give me a subform (portal) which dispalys free and booked dates. Using this method makes it very clear what dates are free and what dates are booked. Is there a way to do this in Filemaker?
