One contains details about the customer etc, and the other contains the products related to that quote. They are linked via a QuoteID field.   2. I have a database with a many to many relationship between 2 tables tblMedia containing container fields and tblProducts. Could I use portals to display media in tblMedia on a layout based on tblProducts TO? Does this work the same way as for text fields? Or Can portals display media fields?

    I just checked my notes from DevCon, and it seems sad but true: Client formatted text overrides conditional formatted text. So -- we are still forced to create calc fields or use to display data cleanly for a report? Or did I miss something? Is there some way to set a field to refuse or ignore client formatting (other than key command to paste unformatted)? I'm also thinking of using a replace or loop command to strip it on existing data. (Client had been pasting text from all sources, retaining many fonts, color and sizes.) I can try to teach them to paste as unformatted, but the existing data is a mess. I'd like to fix with the least amount of fuss.

    I have a system set up with an item database and a picture database. In a layout in the item database I have a portal to the matched picture in the picture database. When I view the item database in FM Pro 8.5 itself the picture shows up as it should, keyed by an item number. But when I view using Web Sharing where the picture should be I see ''. Both tables are open, both databases are set to allow web sharing. Yet the portal contents are missing when web shared. Any ideas about what I might do to fix this?

    I am having difficulty getting my pop-up menu data to display how I want in a portal. I have one table with tasks, and for each task I have a pop-up menu where I can select the department(s) responsible for the task completion. I have another related table for requirements. For each requirement, I am relating the tasks we perform to meet the requirement. I have a report layout of the requirements table that uses portals to also display the task data, so that for any requirement you can (theoretically) see all the departments that do work to support it.     Hi. I am attempting to include various sized pictures into a layout. The container box has a pre-determined size but when I try to insert a picture it is expanded/contracted to fit the box thus adjusting the aspect ratio. Is there a way in which I can maintain the ratio without having to ensure that all pictures that I use have the same ratio to begin. Thanks

    This is pretty inconsequential, but a niggling detail that's plagued me for ages. When I'm working on a layout for data entry that is intended never to be printed, I find it distracting to be seeing the squiggly vertical and horizontal lines that indicate where the boundaries for printing are located. I can't find anything under the 'View' menu that enable me to turn these off. What am I missing? (Or am I being too easily nettled?) Wickerman

  13. I have two db's that talk to each other. One of them stores all of the information about our mentors and the other stores all of information about our students. Each student is assigned a "cohort" year (the year they entered the program) and each student receives a specific mentor for the cohort year. In the student db a unique identifying ID for the mentor is entered to link the mentor and student. In the mentor db I've created a portal to list all of the students with that mentor's ID. Each passenger must choose several options from a list of "vendorServices" related to a "Vendor" table (for example, there are 5 vendors on this trip, each offering 3 meal choices.     ARRG. : With Layout Tabs, I have quite the solution now, only somehow, I have a number 2 tab (second from the left) in a row of 4 tabs that pops up first on navigation to the layout where the layout tabs exist and I cannot remember how to fix this so the number 1 tab comes up first.     Hi Guys, this is my first post and I am very new to Filemaker Pro, but I am working on a simple catalog database. One of the main features is that there are tabs for different items. I have a list of clickable items such as: Lavatory Faucet Tub Faucet etc. and on the bottom have tabs that show the same items. I have one table with defined tasks and each task has a pop-up menu to select the responsible department(s) for the task [can be more than one]. In another, related table, I have requirements.     Greetings I have a text field that I want to populate with members of a value list. The value list contains a small list (about 10) of accounts, eg, 102, 103, 104 etc. I can populate the field with the check boxes just fine. What I want to do is count how many items are checked. Here are my table relationships: case -- contact_linker -- contacts -- actual_contacts(client, attorney, witness, etc.) Those are my four tables in order... I am not able to make it uneditable in layout mode, so what happens is that the users are able to modify the layouts.   29. Hello, I have a portal that currently shows all related records (as it should). Sometimes, however, I'd like it to only display certain records. Every record in my related file has a field called "active" - this displays whether the player is active or not (with a "Yes" or "No"). I would like to create a button that - when pressing it - will only display those players listed as "active" in the portal. I can then have another button that will reverse this (i.e., do the default - show all). What would be the easiest way for me to set up this "find?" -- I can then throw it in a script, for the button... I'm using FM 5.5. Thanks! Chris

Hi here I just added a feature to record sound in my data base and when played I get the spinning beach ball, (it stops when the sound stops playing) has any one had this before and is it problem? the program does not crash.... also will adding sound to the database make it large and the database unstable? cheers D

  33. In some ways Filemaker Pro has very old fashioned limitations, like the missing option to display a found set of records in multiple rows & columns in Browsing mode. This option is limited to the View/Printing mode, and .. in that last mode no interaction whatsoever is possible with what one sees nicely on the screen.   34. In a portal, each row has a button. This button pops-up a larger window of that same portal row. The problem is, if the user has started typing something in the portal, then runs out of space and so without committing the changes clicks the zoom button to get to a larger view of that record ... ... we have a conflict, because the record is being edited from two different windows. If we use the commit function before calling the popup window then the "go to related record" step is lost. Is there an elegant way to commit before going to a related record ?   35. FMP V6.04 I like to create a button that by clicking it would copy 8 fields (all address details of a client) so I can paste it in to another document. I am not sure how to go about this. Do I need to write a script, and if so does anybody have a sample as I am not sure how to go about it. Alternatively I can think of creating a layout like an envelope and copy it from there. However I am not sure how to do this either as I can not find a way of copying this text field. In other words I would like a user to only have to click one button to perform the whole copy routine.   40. I need a way to have my data adjust to fit within a defined field size. I want it to be the biggest possible size for the field but when it's longer, it needs to be smaller. When clicking on a row in the portal showing related records from the guests table, it takes me to a layout to add guests. This is perfectly fine if attendees for a conference are different all the time.   48. I am totally new to this, my apologies...I am working with an invoice database that I would like to produce reports with. The Problem: when I set up a columnar/list report the invoice tables do not all add up, only the first line in the report shows up. The invoice contains about 15 rows and each row is categorized by a pull-down "id". How do I get the report to reflect the remaining 14 rows when I do a report for a single month?     I have used .png's with transparency successfully in the client just fine but when I see them through a browser, they all have white backgrounds. Does instant web publishing kill transparency or am I ever so slightly retarded?     This is a fairly complicated request. I have two tables in one file, Shipping & Invoicing. Each Shipping Record has a shipping_number, each Invoicing Record has a invoice_number. The Invoicing Table has a repeating field populated with the shipping numbers that are being used for that invoice (an invoice can have more than one shipping record). I would like to show the invoice_number on the Shipping Table based on if the shipping_number is included in the repeating field.   51. Once again I am appealing to the great gurus on this site who have been sooo helpful in the past. I have a table that contains 2 types of records: Sales and Returns and 2 layouts; one to enter/modify sales, one to enter/modify returns. My problem is how to permanently hide sales records when using Returns layout for data entry and vice versa permanently hide Returns records when using Sales layout. One solution would be to change the structure to 2 separate tables (1 for sales and 1 for returns); however reporting is so much easier with one table. Thanks for any pointer/suggestion.

    Is it possible to override the sort order for a two field value list derived from values in a table where second value only displayed? I noticed that if i have table 1 pk field 2 1 Alpha 2 Bravo 3 Charlie 4 Delta and i make a value list from the values in table 1 field 2 and use the value list as the source for a drop down the choices available are always sorted from A to Z. I am missing some fundamental understanding of how to bring up a patient record and then ADD doctors to that patient.   57. Hi - I have a drop down field that shows values from a value list, defined to show only the second field in its definition. Works fine except that each time a new value is added (on a different layout in related table), when I come back to the layout where the drop down field is, the new value is not there the first time. If you click on a blank area of layout, and then drop down list again, the new value is there. Sometimes, just dropping it down a second time shows it. I think they had a custom lay out that you could edit information like tape number, format, audio… I have tried looking for different post but have not come up with the information I need. I have 2 related databases, related by city (in a contact list type layout) One db contains the contact info and the other is a form view of sorts, displaying all related contact info. Currently I set it up as a portal and it's working well. I also have a check box in each record and I'd like to tell it to export (or import to another database) only those that are checked.   62. Hello, I created a database a few years back (with version 6 pro or version 6 developer, I can't remember), and it always opens with the layout mode unavailable. It never asks for a password. I seem to remember a keyboard button that you hold down while opening a file to force it to ask you for a password, but I can't figure it out. Anyone have any idea how I can re-gain access to administer this darn database!? I'm sure I have the password, I just can't get it to ask me for it... What am I trying to do is have a list view of my records where the fields are not editable, however when a user clicks on a certain record from the list it will switch to the "form" layout and in this layout the user can edit field content.     Help! I am new to filemaker and am not sure how to delete the PART that I created. Here's what I did: From the left-side tool menu I dragged part to the page. It became LEADING GRAND SUMMARY and now the page is split in two. When I print, an extra page comes out. I simply would like to delete this. Any suggestions?

    One of my layouts is in “table view” mode for quick data entry, per the users’ request since they are coming from excel spreadsheets). Even if I rename the field names to more friendly names on the layout, in form view they are cool but in table view, only the actual field names show up. For instance, I have nameF (in data dictionary) for first name and renamed it to “First Name” for the layout. Table view only shows nameF, but form/list view will show First Name. It’s especially long and confusing for related tables like student:nameF Is there a way to fix this? Thanks in advance

    OK, I'm "dark green" when it comes to web viewer...what I'd like to do is the following: Using a report layout, have the web viewer appear in the footer. So the user can view each employee that needs to be updated and have the web viewer at the bottom. This way they don't have to toggle between applications. The problem I'm seeing is that as you scroll the web viewer restarts itself (goes to the URL specified each time). I'd like it to stay 'static'. All I can think of now is having two pop-ups which is not what I want to do. Any ideas anyone>

    I have a value list for a field called “Status”. If the status is “Denied” I would like the word to show up in red. If I do change the field type to calculation, the value list won’t work.     Hi., I have a settings layout where I have about 150 fields (300 total, 150 regular and 150 global where global = regular so that global fields problem when more then one user uses the db is avoided). The layout is restricted to one record only. I made a self join via foreign key and what I would like to do is: Display 150 fields in portal (or something similar) so that they will fit onto one screen and no scrolling of the layout is required. Scrolling of the portal would be fine. I cannot figure it out as the portal scrolls only when it has more then one row and as I have only one record to display it would mean one row only.     I use FM Pro 5.5, and I'm looking for a way to select an element in layout mode using a drop down list of elements in the layout I'm working on. For example, in MS Access, there is a drop down in properties where I can select an element of that layout whether it be a field, text, or some other element. I'm after a way to do that in FM. My reason is that the layout I'm working on may have a lot of closely spaced elements that are difficult to select or may by positioned behind other elements making it very difficult to select.     I have a lecture tracking database & I'm trying to figure out if I can send an email that contains data that's displaying in a portal. There are 5 lectures that occur each Thursday. I have a layout that displays the lecture date with a portal that displays the 5 lectures for that date. I'd like to be able to generate an email that has the date, then lists the 5 lectures for that date. Is there any way to do this?     Hello. I think this isn't possible, but asking anyway: I want to sort a value list by a field without the values in that field appearing in the value list itself. For layout reasons I need to use a drop-down or pop-up value list (can't use a portal, for example). The values come from a related table. The values to be selected are unique. The values in the field I want to sort by might not be, so I can't use it as the first field. The values in the sort field are meaningless to the user, so I don't want him to see them, even during the actual selection process. Is there a way?

    I have a calender layout that i will be using multiple times., for various date related reporting. there are quite a large number of layout elements. i am dublicating the tables and using the relationships to filter in various data to reprot. Anwayt the question is there anyway to change multiple fields to a different table, or am i going to have to go through a click on all of them. a nice export to txt and re-import would be nice. a simple find and replace. it is such a simple task but is going to take a large chunk of time. this is where filemaker fails. i think it has a clunky layout design system; but thats enough winging : anyone got any ideas.

  77. I have a log portal that includes text from emails sent to and from a person. Is there a way I can include a layout that prints out all the portal records in variously sorted formats while not wasting space. So that, if the first record has 3 lines of text, it uses that much vertical space, and that if the next record has 3 pages of text it expands to the necessary amount of space. This all happening for all the records in the portal, so that the user can print out the entire portal of emails without printing out whitespace?

I'd like to design a layout in Filemaker Pro that will show the Course Selection box (course names, dates offered, price for members & nons, & CME) along with the hotel information. Any suggestions?     I am trying to use a value list to display a job selection field that is easier for a user to view. I am using related value lists to display and use JobID numbers associated with a spefic job name. For instance, job_001 is a unique record with a decrption field of "Uptown". For each section of the report than can anywhere from 2-45 code violations, I have the sections as separate table related to the actual report table. The parent contains all the data and in the child is where additional data per end user is entered. For example one shipping container ( one customer )contains 10 different items - such as 3 boxes with spoons and 7 boxes of forks.   86. I need to have two different value lists for a field. The value lists show items from different related tables. The field is a part number and the value lists are (1) parts from the entire inventory and (2) a subset of the parts based on a job, if it defined. I had the idea of using a Tab field to switch between hidden tabs based on whether a job is defined or not. That would make the part field with the appropriate value list defined "appear". Is there a better way? Can the position/arrangement of a field be scripted to make a field come forward or backward? Thanks for any tips.

I'm using a combination of the Field Comments and Tooltips feature to give the user more explanation what a particular field is for besides the small field label next to it. I've used this calc in defining the Tooltip - FieldComment ( FileName; Get ( ActiveFieldName ) ) Which works great, but obviously the user has to click in/on the field to make it the ActiveField, and for the Tooltip to show up.   91. A recent post got me thinking about error reporting. I do error trapping to prevent data corruption, but haven't implemented error reporting in my solutions. I like the simplicity of Genx's custom dialog. "Note to Developer:... " which can help diagnose problems and gives the user the tools to help the developer. What are other ways of error reporting that you've used? E-mail on error? Setting a $$log that gets written to an separate table on close? Include Get(ScriptName) and Get(LastError) in the $$log?     Hello All - FM9: trying to shrink a portal so it shows no empty lines on a printout. FM Help says: Portals slide like any other non-field object, but objects within a portal can't slide. If you specify that a portal slides up and the enclosing part shrink, FileMaker Pro omits empty portal rows. - But it doesn't seem to work at all. Any help or suggestions very welcome.     Just a quick question about IE and web viewer. I have IE 7 and have very little inclination to upgrade to a newer version unless I can take advantage of certain features in the web viewer. The question is will IE tabbed browsing open tabs within the IE window in the viewer when links are clicked that open new windows? Rather than open a new IE window outside of FileMaker. If anyone has dealt with this I would greatly appreciate any input you could offer. Obviously this is at the mercy of the current users settings if it is possible, and it would have to configured in the browser prefs but I could handle that if I knew that it was at least capable.

    I'm making a form with 20 fields. Each field is for a product feature. I use these fileds to mak several different outputs, like a product leaflet and a catalogue. Some of the features may be used for the leaflet, and some for the catalogue. To gain this, I want checkboxes behind every field. One for every output. Once checked, the feature must appear to the output and if unchecked, this feature will not appear on the output. I've made the form and the outputs also, but I cannot get it to splite the features into different outputs. Can anyone give me a hint and help me out on this? Thanks!

    I seem to have come across a problem, I am attempting to create a customer contact notes system. The fields we will have will be 'reason for call', 'notes', 'client id' and 'date'. What I dont seem to understand is how I get to have a single line of notes, then once that has been completed for the program to have another empty fields line created, is this possible.
