    Hi, I'm using FM7 on MAC and I'm a beginer. I'll try to use the good terms to explain my problem. My problem is that I'm entering date and I want to set it up YEAR-MONTH-DAY. I've changed it that way i n the LAYOUT, clicked on my date field and went to FORMAT>DATE and changed the format there. Selected Custom, then Year, Month, Date seperated with "-". No problem so far. Now, in the BROWSE section, it looks as I wanted, YEAR-MONTH-DAY. But when I click on the field, it changes MONTH/DAY/YEAR and I have to enter the data that way. When I hit enter it goes back to YEAR-MONTH-DAY. Now how I do change the fact that when I click on it, I have to enter the d…

    Hello I am kinda at a stand still with this one form I am working on. Ive attached it for your visual reference. Heres what I am trying to do: Its a contacts page using a Tab Controlled Form to seperate contacts by groups. Then using portals to retrieve that information and display it the correct Tabbed page. So for instance, if Company Test 1 was associated with Group 1 from the drop down menu, I would like that Company to show up only on the Group 1 Tabbed Portal.     I have a layout for printing that combines all the information from other layouts. It spans two pages in layout mode. As the fields' information content varies, I use sliding. In preview mode/printing the follwing happens: All the fields that are slided to the first page show up properly but the text labels belonging to them do not. They just disappear. Turning off sliding or turning the text labels into fields is the only way to get them to show. The second problem I have with sliding: When slided to the first page certain fields get separated (one part of information showing on page 1 and the other part on page 2).     I have a layout on which the only user-changeable field is a date field, which uses the pop-up calendar for entry. The problem is that after clicking on a date, the calendar does not pop back down like it does on other layouts. These calendars seem to have a need to auto-tab to a next field and on this layout there's not one. I tried several things but an extra click out to the side is always required. Is there a way to get around this without adding a dummy field just to "catch" the tab action? Thanks for any help with this.

    I have a layout with a background set by a global container field. The Field Behavior has "Allow field to be entered:..." all unchecked. This field object is locked, using the Arrange:Lock menu. In Browse mode, when the user clicks on the background a message window is displayed with: "No records are present. To create a new record choose New Record menu command." The layout is based on a TO and has a portal and a couple of other fields. The background global container is in a separate globals table. Why does this happen and how can I turn it off? TIA

    Hi all.. I'm having a big problem developing a "Fast letter create" solution. My goal is to get it done by a layout which is divided in several parts like salutation, content, closing and finalisation of the letter, where the user can click a selection-field and select a pre-defined value. So far, so easy.     A small thing, but slightly annoying. Everytime I go to a layout and choose print and then from that dialog choose pdf it comes up with a default filename for that pdf. I need to show information about the current school year (table = activeYear which is the base table for my report layout). How do I summarize students and teachers by memberCode (table: activeYear),by school district (table: districts), by school level (table: schools), by school (table: schools), by ethnicity and by gender (table for both: persons)?     I am trying to invoice a group for membership fees. I would like to keep record of all invoices for each customer. There are some other things which I need to do, but I think if I can figure out how to set up TOs for a simple invoicing. I have members who get billed yearly, and I would like to be able to input past dues information to keep track of what each member has paid as well as ongoing dues which are billed. Now I need to implement an edit that cannot reasonably be done by editing a field in a portal row.   23. Hi, all. What a weird "problem"! I need to put two merge fields next to each other, inside the same "field", right-aligned, for display on a layout. I want them to display in the left-hand third of the layout. The problem is that <><> is so long that I can't slide it into position: it bumps into the left edge of the layout! If I try to resize the whole gizmo, FM re-extends it towards the bottom which results in the "field" being 3 or 4 lines high, which is not what I want at all... Any suggestions? Thanks!

  27. hello, I work for a large University and lately I've been scanning slides and putting them into FMP 7. I'm using the photo catalog to display the slides. The issue I'm having is it takes forever and a day to display the images. My question is how can I speed that up, and is it possible to make the default viewing mode "List View?" If it is, is it also possible to make it so that the only way they can see the slides blown up is for them to download them? Also the file sizes for the pictures are about 3 megs.     I am creating a set of pop up menus that are part of my Dynamic Values Lists and was wondering if it is possible to get the first box under the list not to be automatically selected when I use check boxes. Table1 contains JobNumber (the relationship field) and JobRep. Table2 contains Portal1, multiple instances of ItemPrice, and TotalPrice, a summary of those prices.   37. I have assets printing to a report. On the software report there is a notes section. Some items have no notes and others have really long notes. Is there a way to make it so that I could put a field on the report layout so that if there was a note, it would display (to the right length to include everything), and if there was no notes...it wouldn't show at all?

Is there a way for the columnar (list) view to behave like Excel where you can keep the left most column...say, a persons name...as you scroll sideways right to bring out-of-view columns in to view. Basically I want the diaglog to ask 'What is this persons location' and then the user can select one answer from a given value list (which then becomes the 'location' field).     I'm trying to display multiple full, printable multi(15-20)-page documents in FileMaker. Now, I realize that as opposed to copying and pasting the documents into FileMaker to print them, it would be more feasible to simply allow FileMaker to print them through their own file with a script, but I'm supposed to have them viewable (all 20 pages) in FileMaker. It seems, however, that FileMaker has a maximum page limit of 11. Is there a way I can properly display all 20 pages and print them from FileMaker? Thanks a lot! M

  50. I'm trying to create a value list for use in a popup. Each record is a company, and each company has up to eight locations, each location name defined by a separate field in the record. Now, I see from examples in this forum that I can create a new table, linked by a primary key (say, Company ID), and then create a new record with the primary key and the field value for each location in order to make a popup list. That's fine. But is it possible to keep the field values directly within the company's record, so that I don't have to make a separate table for the locations?     Hey there, I'm working on making a database of products for a company. I can't get it to end up displaying properly though. Firstly, my portals go across pages, a no-no. I've grouped them in with the parts that they should stay with, but this still doesn't prevent separation over pages. I've looked, but couldn't find out. How do I accomplish this?     sorry if this is posted in the wrong location. I'm working on documentation for my latest solution which requires a lot of screenshots. To get a little better image for print I increase the view size to 150% to do my screenshot. Today I noticed that my portals were slighly off when viewed at this size. at 100 and 200 % they look fine as intended but at 150 they are off. In the "object size" palette they stays the same but viewed on screen they get a little taller as if they gained a few pixels in height. Can anyone confirm this as a bug?

The issue being: I have a portal wich displays all the records in my "contractor" table. I have another table "FP" wich has info regarding our jobs.     Is there any way to create a navigation "breadcrumb" menu on a layout (similar to one on this page)? I am looking to create something dynamic depending on where you are: Home > Planning > New Request So that you can click on the names and return to the previous layouts.

  63. Hi. I have a main table, contracts table and amendments table. Main can have multiple contracts and contracts can have multiple amendments. I have a portal for contracts on the main table. I can successfully add multiple contracts. Now I need to be able to select a contract row and be able to add an amendment (or several) for that contract record. How would this be handled?     All I am in need of what I thought would be a simple solution. No luck. I have 1 table that is a summary list of my clients. In it there is a unique 6 digit client id number. The second table has multiple records per client. There also exists the same 6 digit client id number in each record. As the number of times a client could pay is different, there can be anywhere from 1 to 4 (or more) different records per client in table 2. I have used the sum(child table::amount) calculation.     Hi im trying to get my value list to work where I have a main date field where a customer selects a particualr date. Then after they select a date there is a value list where the user has to chose what kind of reservation the reservation is. ie. birthday party, corporate, fundraiser etc. Once the two fields have been selected the third field, is so the user can choose what time the reservation is for. Keep in mind that the time slots are different depending on what day of the week it is and what kind of reservation is chosen.   69. It seems that it's not possible to replace the content of a field with a value list by a calculated result. I have two fields in my solution called "Status" and "Commercial status". My Commercial status field has value list that reflect the overall status of the job (in progress, to invoice and finished). I would like to have these values changed by a calculation based on the status field. My calculation is like the Case(num_jobs::totalprint<"1";"To invoice";"In progress") But nothing happens! The calculation runs ok when i change the field to an edit box. Anyone an idea why ? Thanks in advance.

    I am new to Filemaker Pro and found your site extremely useful for making a conditional drop down menu. My question is How do i make three conditional drop down menus.   76. I am having trouble finding an elegant solution to this problem. I have a portal which displays 50 records on a layout. However the found set can contain from 1 to 500+ records. What I am not sure how to do is allow a button to be created if the count of records is greater than 50, so the user knows that there are more records found and can click on the button to show those records in the portal and so on for the next 50 etc. This is exactly like the forums here, where x number of records are shown on a page with buttons at the bottom to go to page 2, 3, 4 etc. I can achieve this with multiple layouts and scripts, but I need one of each for each set of 50 reco…

I have a field in my set of 1000 or so records that is a drop-down box with the defined values "yes" and "no". I have several tabs with several different interface graphics on each tab. When I open the tabs on a client computer I notice a slight delay when the tab is viewed for the first time. After each tab is viewed once it seems to load the tab almost instantly. I assume that the tab graphics are being loaded into memory.

    Is it possible in Fmkr 8 to nest portals? That is, put a portal inside another portal? Table A is linked to Table B; Table B to Table C. I'd like to put a portal on a Table A layout showing related Table B records. In that portal I need a second portal showing Table C records related to the Table B records in the outer portal. When I try this the inner portal shows up in only the first record of the outer portal, and shows all the related Table C records indirectly related to the Table A record.

For example the contents of the text block could be This is a <> The problem is that the text block auto expands to fit the contents of what you type in, however the labels are short and so the text block is always too big on the layout - you make it the correct width and it gets deeper, or adjust the depth and it grows in length. Is there something simple I'm missing to force the size of the text block, or do I have to work around this by making a block with no background colour & using a filled rectangle behind it to get the background I want - (seems cludgey!).

    Can I set the horizontal end to a layout? See, I have the these nice looking grey bars that run horizontally through my layout. They separate the layout sections. But, as you can see in the attachment, they end and the layout sections' background color do not end. If I extend the gray bars, the horizontal scroll bar appears, implying to the user that there is more too see to the right when there isn't. Any suggestions? Clipboard01.bmp

I also have a portal of related records that are sorted by the fiscal year, including previous and upcoming fiscal years.
