When I try to learn a word to my user dictionary I am getting an error message, " Claris Error: Unable to add word to dictionary" I created a new blank dictionary and I am getting the same error. This is something that has just started happening, I thought maybe I had reached the limit on adding words that is why I made a blank dictionary. Any suggestions?

I am using 8.5 Advanced on an Intel IMac. Closing the program is a bother. If, when I select "Quit FileMaker Pro Advanced" or the Apple Menu "Shut Down" the program takes about 75 or more seconds to do this or just freezez nd I have to invoke the "Force Quit Applications" command. I generally have about 8 or 9 files open hidden all the time. Why does this happen?

Hello everyone... I am creating a file that is for a survey we are putting out to customers. What I was thinking is to have the questions in one table as fields. So each questions will be a record in the table. And since we are going to set it up for the user depending on what type of customer they are. (I.e. Parent, student, staff) Depending on what type they are they will be asked different questions. I am new to FM, purchased FM 8.5 Advanced for a development project... In the contact section, I am trying to add a pop-up window that will allow you to add an additional 3 names and phone numbers... The problem is that the screen is fairly full, and I wanted to click on a button that that would call-up a window where, as needed, up to an additional 3 POC's can be added. I purchased two large (FM) recommended books, and called FM only to find out my one-year support was used when I called in one-time to register a software license to the project. Not too happy a camper... anyone?

I have searched the past posts on here regarding these errors but none of them revealed much info about them. One of the users at our client's office seems to keep getting these errors when exiting the application. Only her. We have installed the same application to other clients and it does not seem to have a problem. Any experiences with this?? Hi, I've recently upgraded to 8.5 from 6.0. Very often, when I go from one database to the other using 'window' in Filemaker's menu, the database I selected among the available list opens a white page ( i.e. I cannot access nor see any fields). It's as if I never selected that database. I must shut down filemaker advance and reopen every database. I thought it was corruption in my databases until today. I have one file (using 8.5 Adv on XP) that I just noticed causes a strange Filemaker crash when I exit in certain ways. Doesn't happen after closing any of my other files. Here's what happens: - File has only one window open, maximized. Close the file using the lower x box in upper right corner .... file closes, but then immediately get the old "FileMaker Pro Advanced.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. I am fairly new to v8.5 and am creating a database to capture data over multiple years. Data elements will be the same for each year and I am thinking about a table for each year with the same fields. Is there a way to create one table (Year1) and duplicate it (Year2, Year3, etc)? I see how I can have multiple occurrences of a table but this is just the same table with the same fields isn't it? Am I barking up the wrong tree? Is there another approach? Thanks in advance.

Hello, Filemaker Pro 8.5 Advanced Mac OS X (Tiger.8) When I switch from Browse to Find mode, Filemaker's menubar changes in a very unusual way. The Help menu item is replaced by a black Apple logo that is situated in the middle of the menubar (from left to right), and two Filemaker menu items display (one contains the Sharing menu, the other contains all the rest of the items you'd expect to find). We're trying to figure out how to gain access to a database created for a non-profit and we have built it on our laptop, but need to also use it on the desktop machine once a month. Like another user here, I cannot seem to access full privileges on the desktop machine, even when I log in as Admin using the option key (Mac OS 10.3.9 using FM 8.5 Advanced). I have a particular file very large in size 10gb. I was imbedding files into the database and recently changed it to have a short cut to the file. Two problems with the file, when I close the file it tries to compress it and isn't successful, it takes a long time, but there is no error. When I then reopen it says it is scanning for unused blocks. This takes about 20 minutes each time. Recently I opened up another file and it is doing the same thing, scanning for unused blocks. Hi I have developed a small db, centred around project management, and time billing. Everything ran fine, and I set up the account privileges, with no hiccups. There are only 3 users, with varying degrees of privilege. Myself being the full access holder. I have all the user names and passwords. Hi I might be the pefect example of a little knowledge is a dangerous thing... I have created a set of related db for my biz which consist of 5 related files. The main (central?) db consists of 400 distinct items with an associated key code and several other fixed criteria. Hi everybody, I moved my database from FM 6.0 to FM 8.0. It contains a change-printer-database correspondig to VB-Scribt on Windows doing a good job (and it was free!) Now it does not work any longer, beeing supported only up to FM 7.0 (I am to unexperienced in Windows VB-Scripts to know, whether you allways need special VB-Scripts for each application-version). Hi all, Is anyone else experiencing this problem with FMP 8.5 Advanced on Mac OS 10.4x? I can no longer copy and paste in ScriptMaker. For example, if I copy a script step (using Copy button or Command-C), the step goes to the clipboard but I can't paste it using Command-V. It only works with the Paste button. That's just mildly annoying. Where it gets really annoying is when I copy text in the Specify Calculation dialog (using either Command-C or Copy from the Edit Menu), I can't paste anything in the dialog. I am using a magnetic card reader reading cards encoded with an 11 digit serial number followed by a carriage return. When swiping cards into a password or single line text field, the carriage return has the effect of trying to post the data but returns an error 4 message. If I change the field to a multiline text field it reads the data into the field and I can then submit the data manually. Any ideas why the carriage return doesnt post properly?

I have two licenses for FM 8.0 Advanced. I installed them on two PII PCs running WIn 2000. One works fine with the server, the other won't open a hosted file. It tells me that the maximum number of licenses are in use, but that the machine using the license it the one I am trying to run it on. Even with the other machine off, I get this message. There is only one instance of FM8 running on the machine. Why would it conflict with iteslf?

Hi I use FM 7 for the Mac now but I need to switch to the Windows platform. I DL'd the trial version of 8.5 for windows. I can't open the files. Says they are not FM or severly damaged. Some details: I dl'd to a desktop PC burnrd it (and my mac FM files that were BU'd there) to disk and installed on a PC laptop (both with XP). It installed fine and can open the FM app but no luck with the files. Also tried the "recover" route but to no avail. Would an older version of FM work? Please Help! only 29 more days left!

Hi. I have three licenses for Filemaker 8/8.5. They are being used on a network of 8 Mac and PC computers. I never need to have Filemaker active on more than three computers at the same time, but I need to have the capability of having any three of the eight open. Do I need to buy eight licenses, or can I install multiple licenses on each computer? And if I can have multiple licenses, how can I know what license I am using? Thanks.

I have a file with 8 tables and just over 13,000 records. Sometimes it causes the entire FileMaker application to stop responding. It is usually when doing a find in one of the tables, but has also happened when debugging a script that looped through records in a different table. I am using FileMaker Advanced 8.5 and the file is served on a G5 Mac running FileMaker Server 8.0v4. Is there any way to test if this file is corrupted, or any best practices I should be routinely following to keep the file 'clean'?

Hi. We recently upgraded to version 7.0v3 from version 4 (for Windows). A common application was to copy/paste text from a terminal window into a FileMaker text field. This worked fine in version 4 (and works fine in every other application). However, in version 7 the pasted text contains hundreds of white "box" characters—This only affects the Windows version (not Mac). Anyone know how to prevent the input of the extra characters when pasting text into Filemaker. Thanks!

When I run my script to save as a PDF, I am able to click on the button 2 or 3 times before Filemaker crashes and close. I have ran the Debug script and it seems like it comes from the Save as a PDF. The message I get when the application close is related to a dli_dll.dll file problem. Has this problem happened to anyone else? What can I do to solve the issue ? Hi Folks, Two related questions... I'm new to Filemaker and am creating an events/contact management database. For peoples' contact information I'd like to use value list for state, city, and country. Question 1: Does anyone have predefined value list of the above they are willing to share? This may not be the right forum for this question. I keep records of bills for my business in FM7 on a Mac using OS 10.4 For some reason about 170 of my records in a file of about 500 records are missing. I'm sure I didn't inadvertantly delete them, nor are they omitted. Is there any way to fix a file like this or do I have to restore everything from paper backups?

Our set up first: the fp5 database is hosted on a dedicated server running FM Server, and there are 5 client machines. After a power cut this morning everything was shut down and restarted again. When the first client machine (reception1) was started up it said that a file was damaged. This file was replaced with a recent backup and it started up OK. All clients are now running properly, apart from Reception1. This machine opens the file happily enough, but certain scripts bring up a damaged file error. Hi, I'm finally going to version 8.5. I bought advanced this time ( I did not have developer in the past). While reading about conversions, on the filemaker site it is written that "files should be recovered and then compressed before conversion to version 7 and higher". That is big news to me as I was always told that recovers are to be avoided but in dire circonstances. My question is the following: should I then recover and compress with my 8.5 advanced in the old format ( i.e. .fp5 format) and then convert so as to have the advantage of having the developer report of the old version handy? I am currently running a FM6Pro database with 8 users sharing the files over the network. We have recently upgraded our network and I will now need to add 3 remote users who will connect using the terminal server. I don't know anything about this stuff and my knowledge of filemaker is limited. My questions are: 1. Hi, I have a 8.5v1 database that has this weird issue that I've never seen before. In one of the tables, when I do a search on a particular ID, I always get a blank record as one of the records in the search results. If I delete that record, do the search again, it reappears. If I view all records in the table, there are no blank records. It's messing up my scripting and I'm at a loss to figure out how to handle it. Has anyone seen this type of behavior before? Specifically, I'm trying to generate a multi-page report that's made of one, multi-page-spanning field, whose contents vary greatly in length. I have recently upgraded to v8.5 Advanced and am experiencing some weird behavior on my layouts. When I add a field I cannot see it (although it is there, I can see the field label). When I set borders I cannot see them. I cannot see the handles when the field is selected. In Browse Mode I cannot see the cursor when I enter the field and I cannot see text as I type. But when I click out of the field the text appears. I have been using FileMaker since v2 and have never experienced this sort of behavior. Any thoughts?

Is there anyway to lock a record? I would like to be able to make a specific record uneditable given a setting in a field. I have no problem with FM8 in my PC. Although my files are small. Another friend send me the following error: Microsoft inform that there is a problem with the program. Microsoft? Is there a way, perhaps with a utility, that I can export records WITH container fields (in this case pictures) to an HTML table. FMP export to an HTML table does not allow for container fields.

I'm looking for a way to calculate the elapsed time in minutes when a start time and end time are entered. For instance, entering 11:15 start and 12:17 end returns 62 (minutes). Any help appreciated in solving this. Thanks

One of the most recent Windows XP security updates has broken FM 8-FM 8.5 runtimes. (It might affect more those are just the only ones I have to try). The application will launch once, and then quit running the next time they try and launch it. As of right now I have only found one way to fix this issue: 1) Moved all the runtime dll's to the system32 folder. 2) deleted msvcp71.dll and msvcr71.dll from the runtime because there is one in the system32 folder 3) Changed the program compatablities to run as a Windows 98 and input settings box checked. 4) Turn off advanced attributes for "file is ready for archiving" and "for fast searching" This seems to…

:P I need to have FMP automatically delete duplicate records down to a specific field when generating a report! My database has field like division, department, goal, objective, tasks... When I generate a report that tells a division each objective it has, there are many duplications because there is a record for each task (which may be 4 to 6 under each objective) I can clean these manually but there must be a way to auto delete duplications at the objective field level for this report!?

Hi, I've a fille names AAAA.fp7 which my development file For upgarding the solution I need to import it's previous version also named AAAA.fp7 (that's the source fie) but which is located in another folder. If I open the dev file, The window name is AAAA, and if I open simultaneously the source file, it's window is named AAAA -2 I want to get the next serial value of the source file to put in my dev file. My script is in my dev file. How can I get the source file next serial value, because the GetNextSerialValue requires a filename, which is the same for both files here. Hey Everyone, I've got an issue trying to upgrade my FileMaker Pro 8.5v1 installation to 8.5v2. Everytime I try to run the installer, it tells me "The updater cannot find a qualifying product on the system." The funny thing is, I get the same problem on my work computer, and my home computer (PCs). To make that even funnier (although, strangely enough, I'm not laughing), I get the same problems on my FileMaker Server 7, and Server 8 computers (WinServer 2003). Has anyone ever come across any virii that effects Filemaker? Say one that "eats" layouts? Recently a layout developed a weird graphical glitch in which a small amount of pixelization began just over a button, it looked kind of like static building up until it had "eaten away" the button leaving a blue square. It spread and eventually ate the entire layout, I quickly duplicated the layout and the duplicate is fine but the origional is just a blank page now. I've came across a problem. Every computer in our company that Runs IE7 cannot keep filemaker open. It opens once, and runs fine, but if the minimize it, or shut if off, it will never open again. (Until you reboot, then the same thing happens.) This seems to have happened as soon as we upgraded to IE7. Anyone else have this issue? Anyone else willing to give it a try so we can make absolutley positive thats the issue? It only happens with a runtime.

We have run into this problem since version 7 of FM. We are running windows XP machines and when we close FM and then come back later and try to start it again , most of the time we need to go into the task manager and stop the filemaker which is still running as a process., This is happenning on about 10 machines. I have had this annoyance since we first started using FM7. Our company lists chemical names in many of our databases. These are not covered by the spell check dictionaries and show up as underlined. I have tried to turn off the spell check feature in the file options tab, but it always turns itself back on the next time I launch the application. Is there a way to turn it off once and for all?

Is there an FM8 function which will allow me to move back to the previous window? ie. to be able to go to the last / previous active window, without having to specify that previous window by name. Something like the "Back" button in Internet Explorer. I can do it by having a separate table called "last window name" to hold the name of the current window before navigating to the second window, thus allowing me to go back to window I last came from. But this is tedious. Is there a simpler way? thanks

I have experienced problems printing large found sets in 8V5. When printing from a complex layout, ie Body,summary, sub-summary, trailing grand summary, etc, and the found set is greater than 300 (we sometimes have found sets on the order of 1200) FM 8v5 will get through printing some of the records and then the layout goes squirrely and garbled and the pages start printing blank. I have updated the drivers, tried 3 different printers, HP9000;HP8100;HP4050 and all do the same thing. This used to work fine on FM6.0. We stepped back through the versions of 8 and have found that the problem does not occur on 8v1 so we currently do our printing from a PC with 8v1 installe…

Hi all. Just got the disc, and have a big problem. The installer app shows up as a document, and no amount of digging into the file settings or the package contents have helped. Granted it's a Carbon app and I can't remember what's what with the file bits, but I've tried quite a bit of futzing with Xray. I tried making a new admin account (advice of the FM phone tech) - no luck. Full perms fixup - no luck. Fixup of the Installer Vise app inside the package - no luck. Like I said, I'm a little lost with a Carbon app, but frankly the Info bits seem munged up to me. Any help appreciated!!

I have used FM for some years but by no means can claim to be anything but a novice user, I just open the program and use the existing databases so I hope I can make my problem clear. A couple of times this week when I have opened two different FM databases I have received a screen prompting me to define the database. I have never had to do this before so I responded by "cancel" to find to no data in the DB. Fortunately our data is backed up nightly so I am able to recover the missing data. Is it possible to completely remove access to the layout browser completely. I know I can close the status area before I create a standalone database but the user would still have access to the different layouts through the menu at the lower left hand side where the zoom menu is located. Can anyone tell me if that area can be removed or stop access to the layouts through it?

We had a problem with a user being disconnected from the FM server randomly(or so we thought). We tested just about everyting, network cables, switches, gave her a new Mac... still got disconnected. She is on the latest client (8.5), and our server is updated (8.0v4) and still we couldn't figure it out. Then we noticed that the time on her computer was way off (for invoicing she changes the date on her computer so that the invoices end up in the correct month for accounting), and that she only gets disconnected during the times she sets her clock back. Hi Folks, I am considering the use of Filemaker for an internal database for an organization of about 5 people. One of their concerns is the interoperability of filemaker with open source document formats such as Open Office. I think their main concern is that filemaker will work with other systems they have in place, open source or commercial. Too boot, they wanted to know if there is any other open source database software comparable to filemaker. I'm familiar with filemaker but on these two issues a bit lost. Can anyone shed some light on this or at least point me in the right direction to ask. Filemaker wasn't able to answer these questions. Thanks!

Hi, I noticed that FMP 8.0 use a lot of CPU. When it is idle with no files opened, FM takes around 30%+ and when a file is open the percentage jumps to 70%. Is that normal? Even an image processing software on idle does not take 20%.

I have a file that I converted a while ago and I have been using it without a problem. All of a sudden I can't import or get to Define-->database without FM hanging and causing a force quit. I also converted the original file again and it does the same thing. The original was in FM6. I can open the file but that is all I can do. Does anyone have any suggestions at all?

I have my FM fields all set to the default font Helvetica, 10 pt. Whenever I copy a new email address from my mail program and paste it into the appropriate FM field, it keeps the mail program's font characteristics (Verdana, 12 pt.) rather than changing to the default characteristics of the FM field. Is there a way to make FM change the pasted text to the default font?

Hi, Obviously, variables should be faster than globals, but in fact that's wrong. Globals are much faster than variables ! I've made a counting loop with FM 8's script variables and the same script with old school golbals fields. Guess what ? Globals are much faster, either on a standolne solution or through networking with FM 8.0v4 networking. counting to 500 000 with globals }:| 55s, with $avariable : 79s ! That's for local. For WAN performanace with 8.04 server that's 11s vs 16s for counting to 100 000, and 56 vs 86 for 500 000.
