FileMaker Legacy fp3 and fp5

Hi, I have a problem with filemaker pro. I am a complete newbie so please stick with me ;o)) I run filemaker pro on a server 10.4.8. My database is running smoothly and I have not particular problem. When I use my database throught "open remote", when I click on a button I have a very brief error message saying "The file was not closed properly. Filemaker is now performing a consistency check". Then it asks me to open the file and when I open the file through hosts it works. I do not have this problem when I open the same tab on the server. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Ben

When I try to learn a word to my user dictionary I am getting an error message, " Claris Error: Unable to add word to dictionary" I created a new blank dictionary and I am getting the same error. This is something that has just started happening, I thought maybe I had reached the limit on adding words that is why I made a blank dictionary. Any suggestions?

I have searched the past posts on here regarding these errors but none of them revealed much info about them. One of the users at our client's office seems to keep getting these errors when exiting the application. Only her. We have installed the same application to other clients and it does not seem to have a problem. Any experiences with this?? Launching 5.0 pegs the processor at 99% and requires a hard reboot to stop. Out of the blue -doing this on 2 desktops out of 20+. No changes that we are aware of. Any ideas?

Hi I might be the pefect example of a little knowledge is a dangerous thing... I have created a set of related db for my biz which consist of 5 related files. The main (central?) db consists of 400 distinct items with an associated key code and several other fixed criteria. When entering new items into my inventory db, I type the qty and then the key code which displays info from the related central Db, and I then enter variable info such as year class, size, and condition. I do this by creating a new record for each entry which is quite convenient at inventory time. Now as my inventory keeps growing each year (plants) I have dozens of records under …

I am using a magnetic card reader reading cards encoded with an 11 digit serial number followed by a carriage return. When swiping cards into a password or single line text field, the carriage return has the effect of trying to post the data but returns an error 4 message. If I change the field to a multiline text field it reads the data into the field and I can then submit the data manually. Any ideas why the carriage return doesnt post properly?

I have a Filemaker Pro 6.0v4 question. We have lost our installation disk. If I purchase a new 6.0v4 disk and install it will it be able to see and access hosted files that are on a server from the previous disk?

Our set up first: the fp5 database is hosted on a dedicated server running FM Server, and there are 5 client machines. After a power cut this morning everything was shut down and restarted again. When the first client machine (reception1) was started up it said that a file was damaged. This file was replaced with a recent backup and it started up OK. All clients are now running properly, apart from Reception1. This machine opens the file happily enough, but certain scripts bring up a damaged file error. Sometimes I get an error message in FileMaker like this: "FileMaker can not read the disk where the file is located. Select continue to retry or quit in order to copy the file to other disk" (this is a translation of the original message in Spanish) The question is that the option "retry" does never work. You have to quit FileMaker. This message was not very frequent in the past, but this year I have crashes almost every day. It usually happens during the running of several scripts that include importing steps. I have tried to increase FileMaker RAM assignment and I have a lot of free hard disk space. Hello, I am the Filemaker contractor for a business that has used Filemaker for years. They have a huge investment in scripts, layouts, and plugins all based on FMP version 5/6. We need to upgrade our server from FMP 5.0 Server to FMP 5.5 Server. (see below) Filemaker seems to have flushed all copies of both the full and the upgrade versions of FMP 5.5 Server from the retail chain. Ok... i have a database set up using filemaker unlimited (i think 5.5) and I am doing custom web publishing using CDML. I have a form that is just one drop down box and it is set to submit onChange(). so everytime the drop down menu changes the form submits, normally it works fine. the problem occurs if you are in the drop down box and accidently hit the scroll wheel on the mouse. it cycles through a bunch of the options really fast and I guess this causes it to submit multiple times and this ends up locking up the databases in unlimited and they have to be restarted. Has anyone else run into this issue, and if so have you found any way around it?

This was working just fine from stored URLs but has stopped working since the number of records in a found set has exceeded 100. The interesting thing is if the -max tag is set to 74 or less the data is returned, if I set it to 75 it returns no data. Hi there, It seems when I (and users) try to export from a file it freezes Filemaker (v5.5 OSX, host on OSX). It seems only to be from one file with 130,000 records. From what I can tell, it's from file curruption. Changes are the backups have the same curruption and I've read the recover command usually doesnt work (havent tried yet since it will stop work for at a critical time). Does anyone have any fixes to this? I recall this happening a couple years ago, and i managed to fix it, but of course soon forgot how i did it. :

Just created a new related record to use as a related database. Working fine on Mac but all Windows users get unexpected quit when that particular file opens. I had to create a navigation scheme to keep Win clients from opening that file. I currently host FM5 Server on Windows NT (WS) to small group of Mac OSX on Classics and Win XP & Win 2000 clients. A coworker has this problem. FM Dev 6x on a Dell Laptop (win 2000). FM Server 5.5 on mixed platform OSX and Win2000 Server. She can connect to the files served on the Macs, but if she connects to a PC server first, she crashes. (if she connects to the Mac first, she can connect to the PC later with no problem). I'm using a very simple FileMaker Pro 6.0v4 on two networked Macs. After upgrading to Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger), I now get error messages on the connecting Mac when I try to access the database over the network on the Mac that is hosting it. Then the only way it will work is to use "Open Remote" feature. Is there a know problem with FM Pro v6 on Tiger? Do I need to upgrade my FM Pro? Thanks, Eric

FMS5.5 on Linux. I can see through the remote admin tool plenty of statistics for user connect time and idle time. The FM database controlling this (for presentation at least) seems to be locked. Anyone know of a way to access this data? I have a request to gather the statistics at regular intervals throughout the work day for reporting purposes. Would seem to be real slick if I could export the data along the way.

What we want to do here, is fill in a certain weeknumber of the year x, and then we want FM to return the startingdate and the endingdate of that week. Is this possible in a way?? Is there a limit to how many files can be opened at the same time in 5.5 client?

I have tried several times to setup Web Services Connector on a machine running Win 2000. I can get to the first logon box but it only asks for a user name for admin. It does not ask for a password and later when I try to change things a box pops up asking for username AND password. Nothing works. I have set clear text passwords on the server. Called Filemaker and they said they don't support FMP 6 anymore. Suggested I upgrade but I have lots of CDML pages and no time to learn XML. Thanks in Advance.

I was involved in updating a legacy FM 6 DB w/ a FM Server 5.5 solution. I believe I was told by FM that you cannot open the files hosted by FM 5.5 w/FM 6 client on the same machine at the same time -- it causes it to crash and creates design corruption; there is usually no data loss. When the update was deployed we intialized the Mac for the server, did all the Mac OSX updates and installed FM 5.5 along with the latest updaters from FM. The design seemed be stable. Hi, I'm working on an good old FM 5.5. I made a new button in Photoshop and pasted it in. It shows fine on my computer but it is actully an OLE object. THe FM docs say to use Edit > Object > Links and break the connection there. When i go to this dialog it is empty. I'm all out of ideas. Pasting and Coping it from Paint etc doesnt work either, it always whats the be an OLE object.

I was writing an application to calculate Stableford golf scores. I imported some fields from a layout in another database, and as soon as I went back to browse mode, I got a error saying that the file is damaged, and that the access priveleges have been damaged or possibly tampered with. (I never set any particular priveleges for the file). Recovery did not work, the recovered file has the same problem. Help please! rounds_file.zip

One of my main files will no longer open. At first the file wouldn't open, then it would quit the application if I tried to open that file. Now my filemaker 5.5 crashes if I try to open at all. I've tried rebuilding the file, recovering the file, compressing the file. For the final crowing disaster FileMaker gave me the advice to clean my old file and preferences. Great except I bought my last 2 versions with updates and it cannot find the file, won't download or accept my previous install code. I have sn FM solution that we use in our small business on a small LAN w/ 7 clients served by FM server 5.5. The solution has several window and rather than use the navigation buttons that are there, some of the users are physically moving the windows out of their way to view a window behind it. This is very annoying if they are using a machine that is for public use and I am curious if there is a plug in or script that might stop a user from moving windows and forcing them to use the navigation buttons. I went to a client to make a minor modification and discovered that the main file is in poor health. Symptom: I deleted a field definition and it crashed FileMaker. Yep, live served. I went offline, made a copy, compressed the file, and still crashed. Compressed Clone crashed. Experiment: I tried a recover on a copy and it brought back 5 field defs from years ago (when another programmer created this file). I have been using FM Pro 4 for several years for managing direct mail lists for local charities. Suddenly last summer the program began taking up to 3 minutes to open. At first I thought maybe it was time to upgrade to a newer version and I purchased FM Pro 6. But it was also taking 3 or more minutes to open. I take very good care of my computer system, regularly run anti-virus, spyware, and other maintenance software. Also keep system defragged and backed up. I'm developing on FMP6 Unlimited for a while now, but i had a version belonging to my first employer (with license code), but i now miss the "Web Server Connector" CD in order to serve my solution on multiples domains. I've read on both macintouch and this forum that FMP v6 works under Rosetta on the Intel Macs, but does anyone know about v5.5? Fortunately, our setup doesn't use any plugins, and the files are shared from a Windows 2000 box acting as a server, even though it's only running regular FMP v5.5 (not Server). The Windows server is the only place that ODBC might be used, as there are some ancient Delphi apps running there that synchronise the FMP data with other dbs.

I have a simple script that exports a database as an ascii file. Then I try to use the send mail function to email that file. The exports function works fine but the email is not being sent. I've check the win.ini file and I have added the [MAIL] info (I've cut and pasted from another win2k machine and rebooted the system). It is still not emailing. What should I do next? Tx Yves

I wonder if anyone could give me some help on the following problem. I am running Mac OSX 10.4.5 and Filemaker 6.0v4. I have an database which I have been using for about a year without any problems with printing. All of a sudden I cannot print, it sends to the printer and them says it has completed printing but nothing actually prints. If I try to PDF or Preview from the print menu I get the error message "Sorry, Filemaker is unable to continue printing (Error -9705)". I've always been able to set the layout order in the pop-up menu by going to "Layouts", "Set Layout Order." Now the "Set Layout Order" is greyed out and not "selectable" - any idea what I've done? I'm trying to reinstall FMP7. I've got a full v6 install disk that is now unreadable and a v7 upgrade disk. Does anyone know if there is a download available anywhere of the full version of 6? I've got a valid auth code, of course. And by the way, is it just me or is FileMaker about the worst company in the customer service area? I tried for quite awhile on two separate days to figure out how to get through to someone for info on the above - email, telephone, anything. We've got a data base that uses OLE to link to Word documents and less than 200 links has caused the DB to swell to the 2 GB size limit. Has anyone seen this and, is there a work around for this or is this a known issue? Thanks for any help, Stukes

Hi folks: I've inherited the training records function for a volunteer rescue squad. The program uses version 5 I guess (file extension is fp5). I use version 4 at work, but basically I'm an Excel guy (forgiveness requested)- - - This database has over1,000 records - with about 200 members since we've been using this program. I have a PC running filemaker quite happily until this morning when I got the message "databases.exe has encountered a problem" in one of the windows error reporting boxes. When I looked at the details it mentioned winspool.drv so I copied a clean version of that file but to no avail. I then tried to re-install Filemaker but got the message that "setup cannot find the necessary files". This PC has windows installed in the D drive (rether than the normal C). I can install the program on other normal PC's so I assume it is something to do with the fact that windows isnt where filemaker wants it. Any ideas please on either problem? regards Ron Grout

I have just installed fm 6 on OSX and was hoping to use it to store and print pdf files. I can store them OK and they look good on screen, but they print very poorly. I want to use them as proofs of ads, so they need to look good. I called FM Tech Support, and they don't support 6 anymore but had never heard of the problem. I also have version 8 (but not in the other environment where I want to do this) and the pdfs print great. I also could find nothing on the KB on filemaker.com a similar problem was fixed for eps files. with the .04 update. Anyone come across this or do I need to update the location to 8 at great expense? --Peter

hello how can i return the highest value from a specific field accros the entire database

I've got an 8 file program at has a funny initial delay of about 5 seconds when I choose a layout that has another files info referenced on it. (I think that is the problem.) All of the files are open and maximized when this occurs. The delay only occurs one time--then everything zips along nicely. What is going on? I can't seems to find a solution and the delay is very annoying everytime the program is started. Please help. Filmaker 6.0 Windows XP

I'd like to create another database and get it populated with the info from the existing databases. There is a field that I've based the relationships between the existing databases on. I've been searching for any topics on how to create an indented list. I'd like filemaker to print and let me browse records that are indented like an outline. It looks like it may be possible but not easily. Has anyone found an easy way to do this? Also, is there any way to designate a record as being a parent or child of another record? Thanks! -wing

I have a System date problem with some dates: I host an FP3 database by peer sharing on an XP network with other XP users. Client machines show the correct date calculations; Host machine will show only a "?" with the same date calc fields; If I go back to a previously saved version of the databse, the date calc fields display OK; If I delete all records from that previously-saved version and then re-import current data, the problem re-appears; The "Use system formats" script step has not helped. Hi!. I have installed FMWSC on Webstar (Mac OSX) and FMPU 6.0.4. When I perform a search the system is a little slower than if I would access the database directly without using FMWSC. The problem comes when I try to save information to the database using FMWSC. If all fieds contain little data, it works ok. A little slow but OK I guess. But when one or more fields contain large amount of data, the tystem times out and nothing happens. The data does not get uploaded to the database. If I try to upload it directly (web companion 6.0.3), without going by FMWSC, it uploads no problem. I wonder what the solution is. Is there a setting somewhere that needs to be fine t…

My iMac G3 (OSX v 10.39) crashed while faxing from Filemaker 6. After restart, the file was evidently damaged but recovered using the recover command. The dialog box indicated that the file was successfully recovered. However, with this Mac and others, this file Quits Filemaker with any attempt to open or import it. Can I have a suggestion on how to further fix this file issue?

Hello, I am posting this request on behalf of one of our clients. They have a simple FM solution they use for job tracking/invoicing running on FM4. Recently they had a problem that required us to reformat one of their PCs and when we came to re-install FM we could only find the serial numbers, not the installation code. I have contacted Filemaker but they were unable to help. What they need is an installation code for FM4 on Windows, can anyone help? Thanks

Last year I designed an employee attendence record database. I have a calculation field called (days available). The calculation adds 1.25*month(today). After each month, 1.25 days are automatically added to the (days available) field for each employee. This worked fine until 2006. All of the days reverted back to 1/1/2005 and deducted 15 days from each employees (days available). Can anyone tell me how to include the year for this calculation? I am hoping someone can help. We have been running FMP Unlimited 5.5 on Mac OS 9 on a Blue and White G3/400 for several years without any problems. We have about 24 databases open. The primary means of access is from our webserver which is using Lasso 6. Hello, I had a file that had grown too large (about 1.2 gig), so I created a related file which has allowed me to reduce the number of fields in the big file by nearly 50%. The problem is FM does not seem to be doing it's 'deleting free space' thing properly on exiting, and the file size has not reduced, even though it's got about half the data that it had previously. On exiting the 'finding free space' (or whatever it is) appears, but the search only goes for a shot period (not long enough for FM to be looking through all of the file). Strange thing is, Windows Explorer currently reports exactly the same file size now down to the Kb, even when I have added or…

Hi all, I have encountered a strange problem in my process of migrating existing FM6 files over to FM8. The previous developer, in FM6, had created a relationship from one file to another keying from FileA global text field to fileB indexed calculation field with text results. Everything works in FM6 but in FM7 and 8 it does not. So I did a lot of tracing and I have isolated the problem to very poor design (the whole thing is a mess to be accurate and they wont let me redesign it). I was running FM Pro Developer 6 on Macs with OS 9 up through OS X Panther. Recently I upgraded to OS X Tiger, and have a consistent problem on all machines with USB devices such as camera card readers and printers. When a printer is turned on, or when a flash card is inserted, Filemaker quits. I can restart and it works, but it's a real pain.

I have this one file (main file) that on Windows XP will not prompt for a password at open, even with the ALT key held down. Other files (other projects) work fine. The only way I can get in with administrator privledges is to open a secondary file that opens the mainfile in the background. I've copied the file to a Mac and it DOES prompt for a password with the option key held down. I've tried recovering the file and saving as to no avail. Any suggestions are welcome. JRW

I work in a small business and we use FMPro for scheduling purposes. Today we were trying to set an appointment for next Wednesday, Jan 4th. But when we clicked the Wednesday tab to jump to that day, it said "no records found for this request." This is admittedly a ridiculous question but how do we adjust our calendar in the schedule section to reflect 2006 and not just 2005? Thanks for any help!

I'm nearly complete with a rewrite of a major database. It was in FM6 (server 5.5), and I've now moved it to FM8 (server 7). My experience has been very positive. There were some initial stability issues with the early versions of Client and Server 7, but these seem to be largely addressed in FM8. Both the users I'm a happy camper -- my productivity (as a database developer) has improved, and the end user's productivity has as well. There are so many things that make FM8 a pleasure to work in, whereas in FM5/6 these same tasks were either impossible or required ugly workarounds that were difficult to design, document, and maintain. We have a button to "print p/u" sheets which changes layouts, updates a last order date etc. When I click this, the printer's icon in the dock opens, but nothing prints and it doesn't show a print job in the printer's status window. If I use the File>print command (changing the layout manually etc), it prints fine. Two different printers same result. Works fine (as always) on our OS 9 machines. Any thoughts?.... other than upgrade to FM8 :

i have just purchased an MSI M610 laptop and connected that to my desktop (both XP Home) using WLAN 802.11 B/G The network works fine both file sharing and internet access. However I have installed FMP 5 and 6 and they both load up fine but as soon as I try open a new local file or a passworded hosted file the system asks for my password then I get the squiggle cursor then I get an Application Error faulting mode fmcor10.dll - every time. Strangely I can open a non passworded remote hosted file OK

I need help. I have purchased a copy of FMP 6 UL. I want to use the WSC with Webstar 5.4. I have installed WSC following the instructions. My problem is I do not know how to make it connect to Webstar. I do not know where to put the CDML files for them to be handled by Webstar. Cannot find any litterature or instructions on it. I'm running FM v 4.1v1 and am having trouble keeping the window of my main file maximized. I have tried putting Toggle Window [Maximize] script steps in the open file script and none others but as soon as another script changing layouts is run the window de-maximises. I installed FileMaker Pro 6v4 on a US English Win XP system. In FileMaker, a UKEnglish dictionary is selected. I don't know why it takes UKenglish in the first place. Therefore, I choose in Filemaker as main Dictionary USEnglish. When I exit FileMaker, and start it up again, the UKEnglish dictionary has been selected again. Why doesn't FileMaker remember this? I'm looking for suggestions on how to trap for a loss of connectivity in FM 6. I have a set of local files and a set of served files. While running a script in the local file, it calls an external sub-script on the served file. I would like to make sure that these changes (from the external sub-script) are being made and that WE KNOW if connectivity is lost either during or after the external sub-script is run. I have the Set Error Capture on currently. What happens if I decide to put If (Status (CurrentError)=100... in the inital local script just after the external sub-script runs? Greg

I recently purchased a copy of FM Pro 6 to update my old version 4 software. I have installed my software into Mac OS X (Panther) and everything is OK, but I want to make sure I have the most recent updates. (Looks to me like the 6v4 file is the most recent - but I could be wrong.) I can't find anything but version 7 updates on Filemaker's website and all other searches have proved fruitless. Does anyone know of a link where I might download the most recent updater for FMPro 6, or could someone be kind enough to email it to me? -TIA

Hi, I've got data corruption on a large file. I started the file in 1989. When I script a search for a date field, it brings me febuary insteat of november. I recovered the file with the recover tool in FM 6.0 and it brought me the following result :2 field values ignored. I tried my search script after recovery but it still does not bring the correct result? What should I do. Should I keep the pre recovered file instead of the recovered one( back in older versions, I know it was not recommended at all to use recovery except for last resort situations which is not my case right now although I would love this problem to go away). HELP. have a webserver iis and fm6 unlimited on another machine using Web Server Connector. when I added more virtual websites to webserver I cannot longer get web pages containing CDML tags. I do get the html pages from webserver but when calling http:....FMPro?-db=testdb&-lay=web&-format=search.htm&-view. I get "Page not found". We have been using FM 3 (and 4) for years on OS 9 and 8 machines, but just recently upgraded to an iMac G5 running Tiger. I have figured out how to connect the computers to each other, but have run into a problem trying to open the FM files on the new machine over the network. Usually, we use the Chooser to log onto the machine which has the FM files. Then when that folder (in this case, called "Database") is mounted, a simple double click and we can open them as long as they are opened on that computer. Hi, I have a Mac FM 5.0 server running on a shared T1 line with static IP address and protpcol set to IP only (no appletalk). This has been serving up 4 documents to 5 local computers and 4 remote computers (branch office) for 3 years. Due to demand on our system, we added a DSL line and it was installed today. The server has been left on the T1 with the static IP so the remote machines can log in, but all the computers at the main office have been switched over to the DSL for access. The DSL network does not connect to the T1 network at all. Now remote and local computers are unable to see the server or files by specifying the IP address. We have several Macs running FM6…

I have one database with 120,000 entries and I want to compare the entries received by a field (called account number) for the period 1/7/2004 to 30/9/2004 with the same time period in 2005. So far I have duplicated the base and am doing a manual comparison of one to the other. This is dumb. Just planning a rework of an old solution, and trying to fully understand the need for join files for "Many to many" relationships...i seem to be able to get the same result with just the 2 files & no join file...i suspect that this could lead to impending disaster at some future point so am trying to better understand the subject. I have FM Server 5 serving a FM5 Unlimited and a FM6 Unlimited machine, all running W2K Server. The web connector machine I just discovered today is running XP not W2K. It all runs very smoothly until there are too many people for XP's IIS. I want to move on from W2K but not to the extent of buying 1 copy of W2003 server so I decided to set up a Linux box and put the Web connector on that with Apache rather than IIS, it is supposed to work... has anyone else had success with it ?
