Basically, I am trying to create a punch list for portions of a job that still needs to be completed. The fields I need are - Date Notes Item 1 Item 2 Item 3 Item… the number of items will change depending on the job. But there will be a setup layout to input all Items before records are created. I would like to use check boxes or radio buttons for Items If 3 items have the same date & notes I need to create 3 separate records with one commit button. How can I do this? Not sure what topic this belongs in but here goes - I have an application that displays questions that need to be answered (not user modifiable). Next to each question I have a radio button set so that a user can select the answer they want and it generates a numeric answer. Some of the questions in a record can be blank. Right now I am using conditional formatting to make the blank fields disappear and a gray text box that covers the radio button if the field is empty. This works, but is kludgy because filemaker leaves ghost lines around the field when any field is selected and when in the radio button set you can select the hidden radio button if you click in the em…

Hi there, I'm working on a billing statement, and I'm trying to sort something out. On the "Account Terms and Conditions" portion of the statement, it shows the late payment interest rate. If the rate is an even number, for example 24% it displays correctly, but if it's a rate like 22.75%, the decimal place doesn't appear. I've tried changing fonts to see if the decimal place wasn't a recognized character in that font set but it does the same for Arial, Times New Roman, etc.. The field it uses is specifically for displaying the interest rate in examples like this Account_InterestRate = 0.2275 Account_DisplayRate = Account_InterestRate * 100 = 22.7…

Is it possible to customize layouts so that a particular field size can vary? I'm creating a layout of meeting attendees that displays names, titles, and biographies. Some biographies are much shorter than others, so when I preview the layout there's a huge amount of white space in between each person's listing. I want to be able to tell the layout to adjust the 'bio' field size according to how much text is in it so that each bio is positioned right under the previous one. At the moment I have a very weirdly spaced document.

This is a bit difficult to explain, so much so I'm not sure if I have posted it in the correct section. But here goes. Whenever I click on the screen to deactivate a record (click outside a field). The program automatically does a sort of 3 to 5 records. This seems to be indiscriminate of the number of found records and it happens every time I click out of a field. I am wondering if this has something to do with how I have stored the fields but I would appreciate any help. I Hope this makes some sort of sense.

I have a list layout for printing with a header,a body and a footer. Now I would like to duplicate the layout and ad a Fax cover page for faxing. I tried extending the header part down to add the fax cover above the other information. But it won't except the header being larger than the first page. Then I added a Title header for the fax cover and the moment I add the tittle header part my header no longer prints. What am I missing?:??????

Everytime I close my database on my inventory layout it crashes filemkaer completely closing all my other databases. This layout has alot of fields and I dont know if there is a limit as to how many fields you can have in a layout? Or any ideas of what else causes filemaker to crash from closing a certain layout?

Hi all, I just started with Filemaker and have been able to find answers to most of my questions, but I can't seem to find one that quite fits this one. I'm creating a packing list for order shipments -- I have several fields that may or may not contain data. I want to put these fields on the packing list as just a line of data with a "," in between each piece of data. I can list all the fields on the packing list but if there are fields that are empty, then I have a bunch of spaces and carriage returns. Hi All, Okay, by hook and by crook and by kludge, I have made FileMaker print out most any kind of report I have ever wanted. However, it is always "just" a Chapter in any FileMaker book. Where there are several books on some pretty ubiquitous (and IMHO less effective) reporting tools disambiguated from an orderly, repeating arrangement of atoms and molecules. How do I go about forcing users to use a drop-down list instead of typing in the field? I have a drop-down with six different K9 breeds and of course spelling is important because of some of the searches I have scripted (and of course I have people who get happy fingers and type too fast and misspell). We have a strange situation in FM 10 that we have not encountered in previous versions. Windows environment, server host, 25 users. A user logs in using an account that has restricted privileges – can view layouts but not edit; can create, edit and delete in some tables; run scripts; view lists, menu commands set to all. When the user runs a script to produce a multi-page document, the script pauses in preview mode for inspection but the page arrows are dimmed out and are inactive. Using Filemaker 9, I have a calculation that summarizes data based on date and and a dollar amt to determine a sales persons commission. For example, if the salesperson books between 13 and 20 loads the sales person gets an extra $25 a day. I have that working fine: Case (GetSummary(Total Booked; PU Date) ≥ 13 and GetSummary(Total Booked; PU Date) < 20; 25; 0) It finds a salesperson and sorts by date & puts the subsummary at the bottom of each date correctly. But I also want a grandtotal, so at the end of the week it adds up each of the days. The problem is the summary field doesn't add it correctly because now it's doing it over. Am I missing something? Hi all, I have a complex summary report I need to produce. I do not want to report on the underlying data, just the summary. The data is made up of a lot of related tables. At the moment I've created a script which essentially searches for each component of the report, populates a set of variables and concatenates it into a text field. Hi All, Here's my situation. I have a button to print fax or email an invoice along with several checkboxes for other documents that we may wish to include. For instance there is a checkbox to include a thank you letter (This is a jpeg copy of a signed letter in a container field) or we may wish to send a price list, etc. The way I have it set up now is by using multiple layouts each with a different combination of desired docs. I am almost embarrassed to ask this because it seems so simple, but I cannot figure it out after searching the forums or poking around in the database. Basically I have a field that contains a price value that data entry users have to fill in, however, I do not want read-only users to be able to view this field. Is there a way to have that field hidden to them as described above? Is there a way to create a separate layout that different only privileged users can view? I have a report that shows client payments. I have a sub-summary that shows the total of the payments. Say i have 4 client payments, this report shows 2 payments per page in preview mode and I can print them o.k. If I put the sub-summary field at the top under the header it shows the total of the four payments correctly. (I need it at the bottom) If I put it at the bottom beneath the body it goes onto a third page with other records. it shows the correct total though. This is driving me mad any ideas?

Hi all, I have searched the forum without finding answer to my doubt. I am setting up an invoicing system with FM10, and I have two tables, one with orders and one with line items. I have set an input layout where the user inputs in a portal the line items for each order. Now I am setting up a print layout, the idea is to print a table with all the line items of a record. The table should be dynamic and show as many lines as the line items in the order. I think that the idea is to put column names in the header and than line item fields in the body. My label routine parent table1 with a cDataID field structure as calculations[50]= Case( GET(calcualateRepetitiveNumber) , Extend(LabelsQty); Extend(Data1) ) Looking at this table-1 calculation field and comparing it with a working example that works.. they both react the same, repeats the field depending on LabelQty I think problem is on Child side or the label layout or creating process.. My database uses a job Number which is incremented by 1 every time a new record is made. My boss uses the "Duplicate record " from the Filemaker menu to duplicate a record. When you duplicate a record it adds the next job number to the duplicate record. My boss wants to make a duplicate record with no incremented job number. Any Ideas?

Hi All, I'm creating a project management database where the relationship structure is Category (parent), Project (child), ToDo (grandchild). Each category is a record, each project a record, etc. For sake of navigation, I'd like to create a grid layout where users see what is essentially a "home page" grid of categories (categoryName fields are all that need to be shown), 6 across and an infinite number of rows down. Users click on a category and are taken to another grid of projects that belong to that category. This is more of a user interface question, but I was wondering what most of you do with a delete button in a portal. Do you place it on the left or right side with-in the portal? Are there any interface guidelines out there that show people prefer a certain side? Some of my portals also have a go to related record button as well as a delete portal row button, and when I had them together that went over like a lead ballon as I can see now it is to easy to click the wrong one.

I can't figure out why when I try to move layout objects all the way across the layout with my mouse, I cannot place them very far to the right. I can slide these object with the arrow buttons - but I cannot place an object past a certain point with the mouse. Any ideas?

Hey, As you may know you can Freeze pain in Excel, where a selected row of cells stay on screen as you scroll further down the screen. Is it possible to do this with a header in Filemaker? I am pretty new to FM but I have created a database that contains three tables. 1) Client list - name, address, etc. 2) Task list - date and work done, 3) Fees - invoice number and charges. I created an invoice layout with appropriate client name and invoice relationships between three tables - one invoice/client with all tasks listed by date with charges. It works fine. Except, some tasks require a longer description than others and portals evidently don't slide to eliminate the blank space inside the description field but keep the set number of lines. Naturally the question is "How do I remove that blank space?" Thanks.

Hi there everyone, I'm starting to explore the wonderful world of Filemaker. I'm trying to create a specific report. Here are the details. I'm trying to create a report of a list of numbers per category per location by date. So if I look up a specific date, I want the report to first list everything grouped in locationA, then in categoryA, but list out every number. Then repeat by categoryB and so forth. I've tried changing the amount of columns, and that sort of works, but I would like a cleaner look with each sub-summary and result all on one line instead of each being on separate lines. I have a row of 12 buttons, each of which finds a set of records. When I click a button, it momentarily changes color, but I would like it to remain a different color when the particular set of records is found, so that the user knows which set is operating. I have set a conditional formatting for the button to change the color of the button and text, but am not sure which formula to apply. I figured a variable to toggle the button on and off using Abs ($$color -1), but this only applies to a single button. What I want to do is loop through the other buttons and turn them all off when the button pressed comes on. Does anyone know a script which does this?

Hi, Is there a way to copy the tab order when I duplicate a portal? The problem is I need 4 portals since the data needs to be disp-layed horizontally. I'm running into formatting issues when copying layouts and then trying to resize the body part of the layout. For some reason Filemaker sometimes decides that it will not let me drag a part size to the same size that I have on another layout. While this is a minor issue, when navigating between different layouts that are relatively similar, it's very annoying to see things jump around because a part isn't exactly the same. Is there a way to specify an exact part size in Filemaker? Whenever I click on the part to resize it I can see its size the status window, but as soon as I unclick it I loose the ability to specify the size.

Hello. I am working on a filemaker database for a small sales team that keeps track of contacts, companies, projects, and leads. Most projects start out as a lead. In other words, some leads turn into projects, but most don't. My client wants to keep track of projects and leads on separate layouts. Since projects and leads share 90% of their fields in common, and I need to be able to easily convert a lead into a project, it makes sense to have one table called "Projects" and a boolean field to specify whether or not it is a lead. I'm a filemaker user/developer with a small 3 Mac network which has been running without issue for years. I upgraded a machine recently to a new Imac Intel core 2 duo (as I do every couple of years) and as per usual, transferred all applications from the old to the new machine including FMPro 10.0v3. On the new machine FM launched OK and opened the FM application on a linked machine but most (but not all) of the portals are not working (only) on the new machine. Hi Guys, Im creating a merged letter within filemaker, is it possible to create 'conditional' lines of text without having to introduce another field which does the calc for you. Im thinking along the lines of - if(field value = "M") then display "Male" as in the text....and I'm trying to avoid creating unnecessary fields in FileMaker to do this as its only used for report purposes. I am having a difficult time getting a multiple page report to print out via a script. My goal is to print 3 separate pages; a dynamic fax cover sheet, a second page containing order line items, and a static page containing pre-created text. So far I have got everything that I need working up to 2 pages by fiddling around with the title header, header, body, and footer parts, but I am unable to get filemaker to print a 3rd page. Admittedly I don't even know if this is the right way to create a report like this, but it was working very well up to 2 pages. Any ideas?

Anyway to load watermark images in the background and keep multi column printing? I need it to fill the entire body. If I just enlarge the image, then I just get one record per page. And if I use a portal that works fine, but then I get half the watermark in each column. I guess the question at this point is if there is a way to make a graphic fill the entire page when using columns or if there is some other way to create columns where I can have a background image span the two columns. Hey. Not sure if this is the right place, but as a "learning as i go" user, i wanted to share a tip that i had to learn the hard way... I have a database setup which works great for my needs. I was trying to write a script to run on all the computers that use the database...some Mac, some XP, some Vista. All was fine until Vista. The short story is that the script would not work on Vista no matter what i did. It wasnt until i realized that my date used in my script was being pulled from a global date field, however the field type was set as TEXT, rather than DATE. This caused the formatting of the date to not jive with the rest of the fields being called in my scrip…

Not sure where this one belongs, so here goes. I have a storefront file, and in the register part, upon checkout, I have a dialog box that pops up at one point asking how much is being paid - normally it's the whole bill as one payment, but let's say you want to pay part in cash, then the remaining on your credit card. So what I have done is when the dialog box pops up, the total remaining due (whether the whole bill or what's left to be paid) is in the entry field, and highlighted. That way if you are paying the full amount due, the clerk just hits enter, or they can just type in the partial amount. That part all works great, but the problem is I can't format…

Two clients, (multiple users, similar solutions) have reported this problem beginning a few weeks ago. We have FM 8, 8.5 and 9 users with this solution as well and so far, no report of this problem. A user will be typing in a field and the cursor will suddenly exit the field; subsequent keystrokes are not entered, no other field is selected. The user must click back into a field to resume entry. It is described as the keyboard freezing or the screen freezing but a click in a field or on a button seems to reestablish focus on the FM window. I don't believe it is a slow screen redraw issue because it can happen in a screen that has been open for a few minutes. There ar…

After upgrading to FMP 10, I started noticing that the fields would lockup on me in Layout mode when I tried to move them. The fields are unlocked and un-grouped. This behavior is only visible on our PC systems and not the Mac's. Currently we have a Mac Server hosting to a variety of PC's and Mac's, and the operating system for the PC's includes XP/Vista/7 and all exhibit similar behiavor. Hi, I'm working with FileMaker Pro v10. I'm back mucking around with it after being away from it for awhile. I find the text or data in the cells easier to read if there's a little white space between the edge of the cell and the beginning of the text. I figured out how to go to Layout Mode, then Format > Text > Paragraph and then specify an indent value. So the leading edge now has that lovely little sliver of blank space before the text starts. However, (and this is not a huge deal, just frustrating because I keep thinking there *ought* to be a way to do this), I haven't been able to find a way to do the same with the vertical spacing. Not sure where to post this. I have an annoying feature/bug that I can't figure out. I have a FM10 DB shared on one computer. On the remote computer when the DB is opened, the FM window is small, narrow, and off to the right side of the screen. (Used to be the size I wanted on the left of the screen.) I can resize it, but next time I open the remote file, it's back to small and on the right. I've rebooted both computers and trashed all the FM preference files I could find on both computers. Nothing makes a difference. Any idea where I can find that setting and clear it? Any help would be appreciated.

This will sound strange, but I am looking for a dev platform that I can allow the end user (of a runtime solution) to move or resize fields on the layout. This would be kind of like a simplified report writer. I have written a DB project in FMPro 8 before and am familiar with it, but wonder if there has ever been anything that can create an on-the-fly customization tool. (am willing to upgrade if need be.) Any thoughts would be most appreciated.

I don't suppose there's anyway to have custom-shaped buttons. like if you wanted a map of the 48 states with the area of each state being it's own button. I'm surprised that filemaker made that pretty impossible. (so i'm wondering if there's any chance that there's a way i have not discovered) even, if there were a way to group lines, and make their shape into a button, but there seems to be no way, because the only the actual lines would be buttons, not the shape.

Here is my issue. We got in a new laptop that has the number pad on the right. When I am in a field and number lock is off and I hit the enter key it works great. If I turn on number lock and hit the enter key it will tab to the next field. I wish it to ad another line. I looked at the behavior and only tab is selected for moving to the next field. Thanks Thom

Hsppy New Year and thanks all for your help, especially yesterday! I have a field that has a calculation on it that looks at a field and then copies the contents into the field so that I will hopefully be able to use it for printing labels. The calc code I used was: If (AF1L1P1 = "YES" ; AF1L1N1)& If (AF1L1P2 = "YES" ; AF1L1N2)& If (AF1L1P3 = "YES" ; AF1L1N3) etc... The problem is all the text copies but leaves no spaces inbetween. I would like a line break inbetween the text. Is this possible? Thanks all

Hi, Thanks for the previous help. I'm almost there now!! I want to have previously entered data on fields for all of my records. I thought I could use the auto-enter data option but this only works on the fields where I have just put the conditional formatting. When browseing the remaining fields remain blank. Any ideas? I have tried and find very useable Mikhail Edoshin's approach to cross tab reports. I get the report in preview looking the I want, my problem is I don't want it in Preview [i have no interest in printing]. What I want is to see the whole thing in browse mode on a particular tab. Using Edoshin's approach I get only the last row of summed data. My question is: How can I show the whole array on the tab [i am using years as rows and months as columns with performance % in the fields]? I want to see each year and each of the corresponding month's performance.

I'm trying to do something like OP in http://www.fmforums.com/forum/showtopic.php?tid/179306/ What I'm trying to do is have a footer that appears at the end of every page. I want the footer to contain a "Comments" field as well Total$Amount. I want the "Comment" field to appear on every page but I want the Total$Amount ONLY to appear on the last page. Like the previous post, I'm trying to make a container with a white image and another as transparent. On a 3 page order, for example, the white image is over "EX_sLineTotal" on pages 1 and 2. Hi, Is there a way to adjust the height of the rows in Table View? It's easy to adjust column width, but I can't find a way to adjust row height. With my previous databases, this hasn't been a problem, but for some reason with this database, the rows are very tall (the text is at the very top and the rest is empty space). Why would this be? Is there a way to correct it? Thanks!

How do I SPEED UP the changing of text color and other characteristics? In a page of text, I want to change the color, then make BOLD, every 2nd, sometimes 3rd, line of text... without messing with the ones in between. This means I have to triple-click the line of text, then turn change the color, then turn it bold. Doing this to 12 or so lines on a page makes it take a minute or two. I'd rather simply position the cursor, then call up a script (e.g., Cmd-4), but I can't see how to do this in a script, though I've looked and looked. Any clues for this non-programmer? Many thanks in advance...

I have a field on a layout that uses a dropdown list to select an account name. The dropdown uses a related table to populate the dropdown list. This table includes the account name & account # for each account name. I want to be able to select the account name from the dropdown so it can be entered in the account name filed of the record & have the corresponding account # automatically entered in the record's account # field. Is ther a way to accomplish this without a button? Can it be triggered in some way? I have FM Version 9 Advanced.

I've made several form letter layouts where the user could add variables to pull info from the different recipient's records. Usually this involved creating a button for each variable with the basic script step to add text to the body of the letter such as "". From here there would be a second "body" field that would look for any variables in the text and substitute the correct field data. However, here is a way to save a lot of work. And get this, it uses a repeating field. Hey guys, I have a value list assigned to a radio button field, but the values or text I have displayed in it is lengthy. A user would have to use the scrollbar to scroll across the page in order to read the entire text, that is if I extended the field the full length of the text. In Filemaker I noticed it will not wrap my fields to the next line if my field is too small, however, with IWP my text does wrap to the next line just as I would want it to. My database will be used through both IWP and the FM Program. I have both Asian and Roman Line Breaking selected under File/File Options/Text. I am creating a layout for a resume for print. I am having a problem with the work experience. Some people only have had only one job and some people have had 4 jobs, and so on. When i made the layout i have added all the work experience fields. There is a total of 5 experiences. If Joe had 3 jobs, I only want the first three work experiences to show up, if Betty had only one job than only the first experience will show up, etc. This has to be done by omitting empty fields and a conditional formating but i am not sure how to do it. I feel as though this should be a simple problem, but I can't figure it out. I would like to replicate the "New Request" button which is on the Status Toolbar in Find Mode as a button on my layout. (I'm creating a Find Mode layout for my users.) Is there any way to use conditional formatting on the colour of the tab box? I have a tab box with several tabs, and would like to colour a tab 'Green' if there is data in a particular field in that particular tab, to indicate that this tab contains data and should be looked at. The Conditional Format box is greyed out when I click the tab background in layout mode, but there may be some other way of doing this.

I am very new to filemakaer 9. I want to copy a Mappoint 2009 map into a container in filemaker that is 200x217. When I copy the mappoint map into the container it is too zoomed in and does not show the entire map that I created. I have tried to manipulate the map by using microsoft picture manager. I can shrink it down but the map becomes too blurry and is unsuable. Any help would be great.

Hey guys, Is there a way to create a dynamic layout with sections that expand and retract according to how much information is present? We create callsheets for jobs so people know when they have to show up, who's who on location, etc. There are categories like Talent, Clients, Camera, Props. The number of people who fall into these categories change with every shoot. I have a weird problem that I'm wondering if anyone else has come across. I have a layout in LIST view show 500+ records. In the header I have drop down boxes that when selected will alter the found set of records. Ok no problem. If I move the scroll bar down the page the drop down boxes stop working and I can't select them but if I move the scroll bar up to the top again the drop downs work. Am I going crazy or what? This is happening on a windows platform (XP Professional). Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Hi there I'm just a beginner in FM and new to this forum. I don't know if this is the right section for my question... I've created 2 databases: one is called ClientInfo and the other is WorkOrder. Easy enough... They're both linked with common field k_Client_ID. On the WorkOder layout, I have a Customer box which will list the Client name, address..etc the usual stuff. I need 2 similliar boxes: One for Billing Address and the other for Shipping Address. How can I accomplish this? I've placed the line on the right side of the column on the layout in order to visually separate the columns; it appears on the first page just fine, but not on the second (and succeeding pages). It doesn't seem to matter whether I have title heading and heading or not. Nor does setting the sliding/printing seem to affect it; the record ends properly at the end of the page, etc. Mysterious.

I tried to sum the problem up in the title, but to make it clearer. We have helvetica as our default font, and regularly copy/paste text from other programs into FM. From the web/word/pdf etc. We would like the pasted text to adopt the default font but currently we are pasting the text with the font from the original text/document. Is there a setting or method for consistantly / easily adopting the default font upon pasting? Many thanks, Brendan.

I'm new, so forgive me if this is too simple. I have 1 table called PEOPLE. Each Contact has a required "category" field (Child, Student, College, Adult). I have a layout for each category, because I want to display slightly different fields for each group. I want to make sure that each layout only EVER shows people from 1 category at all times. Hi, I have a project database that handles quotes for construction tenders. The way I need it to run is that we have one project(parent table) with multiple clients(child table) that we send it to. I have a student record keeper, main table is name, etc., and related daughter table is assignment name, date, and score. I have a layout that lists all current students and those names are linked by GTRR to a layout that displays the name and below that is the related table that will show all assignments and a grade total. I switch to Preview Mode to print. Sometimes I wish to print a student's records only for a particular month. From that screen, how might I be able to query the user (me) for the number of the month (or month and year) and restrict the displayed records of the currently displayed student to that? I have been doing a "manual" search but it is tedious.
