Without giving too many details that may be extraneous. I have a db that tracks student applications to schools. I want a report that lists each school followed by all the students applying to that school. Basically, I want a report that lists all the records in my "applications" table and groups them by school. I can do this, but the report only lists the first student record for each school (though there are other students applying). For example, imagine that there are 10 students applying each to Harvard and Yale. The report currently returns: Harvad John Smith Yale Jim Jones The other 9 students applying to both school…

I am a newbie with scripting. I have 3 types of records. I want to use a script to show all records and then omit two of the three types of records leaving just the one type I have a database for teaching with pass types. There are 3 pass types General Pass, Nurse Pass, Dress Code Pass. I have a report layout and want to use a script to show all General Passes. To do this, I have to remove the Nurse Pass and Dress Code Pass records from the found set. I have no problem omitting either Nurse Pass or Dress Code, but I cannot get it to omit both. i have database with two privileges "guest and admin" now for the guest only one specified layouts must be visible and remaining layouts must be invisible so that if visible is pressed hes gets and awkward screen with no access he must see only one specified laout . yes we can create layout by duplicating and modifying and startup with that specified layout but i need alternative

This happens in a noisy environment so bleeps etc. won't necessarily be heard. Hi, I've a value list 1,2,3...9,10. In my layout the field is displayed as a checkbox with numbers 1-10 showing. As these is quite wide, I've changed the box size so I've 2 lines. The numbers are displayed down and then across, ie 1 3 5 7 9 2 4 6 8 10 Is there a setting, to change it to across then down? ie 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 I've managed to do it by changing the order in the value list, but if there is an way of changing the order, I'd love to find out. Hi All, I have a layout/report I'm using for printing. THe first column is a "Record Number". The layout is sorted by a Sub Summary with a page break in between. How am I able to restart the record number count after every page break?

On my layout I have two fields that I have changed the field behavior to "Select entire contents of field when entered". My entry procedure has "Insert from Last Visited" for both of these fields as well. If you tab through the layout fields, on an existing record, the entire contents of these fields is selected as you would expect. However when you click on my custom "Enter" button, the cursor goes to the end of the contents of the first field instead of selecting the entire contents. Is there a command or method that I can have the entire contents of this first field highlighted.

We have a calendar that displays entries as rows in Table view. One way users can arrive there is via a GTRR from a related table; in this case, we want to persist the pre-existing found set and sort order in the Table view. This works up to a point. But the selected entry is usually displayed at the bottom of the window. How can we adjust the display so that the record is shown at the top of the window - with the same found set and sort order as before? Or is there a better way to do this avoiding the GTRR step? Not sure if this is should fall under layout queries... but here goes.... I have a join table in place that brings together 2 tables. One table is items... the other table is images. I scripted a way for people to link items to images. They can have multiple links, or an image can have multiple items... (the benefit of the join table) That has been working great. When we open a sort (say today) it goes 00220091112KA This is broken down by 00220 (Our Location number which never changes) 09 (year) 11 (month) 12 (day) K (never changes) A (starting at A and ending on which letter we are on for that night). ok, here's what I envision. I can't figure it out but you folks are a lot smarter than I. I would like to have fields on a layout and allow users to select which fields they want to see in a table view. So, if I put 10 fields for choice and a user wanted to see only 3 of them, is there a way for users to indicate which 3 and then have those 3 show up in a table view for sorting and printing? I have a new client that requires three reports from my data. One must be legal/landscape, the second is letter/landscape, and the last one is letter/portrait. How do I tell FMP to do three different formats?

The ruler at the top of my layout runs out to 111 inches wide. My print size is set to legal (8.5 x 14 inches) landscape. The white space shows properly in the layout mode but there is this huge area to the right of my work area that I seem to drift out into all the time. Is there a way to resize the overall window so I can't get too lost to the right of my work area?

Have a strange problem with one of my files. All of a sudden, images don't display on layouts. Like graphics I use for buttons, even lines drawn directly on filemaker. I tried to restore the file and it fixed it but then I went to reopen and it went back to the same. Anyone else have this issue?

I need to see if I can do this or not. I have Time Card tab where I can put in the persons time. I have a calendar pull down and select the week begin. It automatically inserts the dates mon-sun. I put it in the sime and it will calculate hours in week, hours left, overtime, and total hours worked. But it I change this all the times I inputted stays. I would like to see if it is possible to when I chang the date it clears out the time I put in for that week but If I select that week again it will show me those time I inputted into all the fields again but only for that week. Hello! I'm trying to create a dynamic layout that changes the number of pages depending on what the user selects. For example, I want the user to start off with one page of general information. This is already done and is normal. I have a field that is default "1" (for 1 page), and I want to be able to change this field to tell filemaker to add more pages because I want to add more information on multiple pages. So if I type in "3" in that field, I want Filemaker to add 2 other pages automatically to the same record (equivalent to dragging the BODY splitter down manually) so I can display other info. I am developing an income statement report. I have almost everything working properly except that I need to add additional calculated fields (based on summary fields named Gross Profit and Operating Income). These need to be in specific places on the report. I currently have a simple layout consisting of a leading subsummary based on the GL account category (Revenue, Cost of Sales, etc.)where I display the category name, a subsummary of GL accounts which contains totals of GL transactions, followed by a trailing subsummary based on the GL account category where I display the totals for the category. Hi, I'm trying to generate a letterhead with the data I have. What I have is a field that says 1,2,3 and so on with people's name under them, 1 can have 5 names, 2 can have 3 and so on. The letter head I need to make will say something like: Hi [name field], please remember to take care of [1]. my problem is taking the [1] from the database I already have and change it into some form of text, like change [1] into [Throwing out the Trash]. OK, I'm working on putting together a subsummary report for my mileage records and what taxes I have to pay for the mileage I drive. I have 99.9% of the report done , but I am having trouble with ONE field. I am trying to subtract one summary field from another to get a result, but all it shows is 0. Hello, This might sound like a silly question, but is there anyway to completely hide the bottom border where it shows the "browse", the percentage, and the toggle? I see you can 'hide' some of it, but I want it gone so the user does not have the option to toggle at all... Thanks. Vandy

I have put a lot of time and effort into creating what I consider to be an ideal user interface/design with custom graphics, etc. I was planning on re-using this design for future clients. However, my current client is concerned about their database not looking like others. Hi people I've got a large text field that is used for comments in one of my layouts. Around that field I have a border/field container made up of image files (i.e. top-left corner, top-centre, top-right corner ... etc - 8 images in total). I've currently got the text field to slide up, depending on the amount of text within that field. What I need help with is getting the surrounding border images to match the sliding of the text field. When the text field slides up, I need the border images to slide up accordingly. I would like to REuse this process without making over all my scripts and fields and of course it would have different data. Hello all! I added a picker window to a solution I am working on. This picker window approach was taken directly from the FTS materials (p 6-50 to be exact) Everything works great with one exception. If you are in a field in the portal and click the add button, it adds it - but the portal does not refresh until you click OUT of the portal. The FTS example does not act this way and I cannot see any difference or reason why. My goal is to not have to click out of the portal and once you add an item, it refreshes the portal list to show it. I have 120 container fields with 120repeats and filemaker will not allow me to put them all in a layout. They are really tiny and they all fit but it will not allow me to put them all there. What is the limit of fields in a layout. It crashes filemaker everytime I try to add all my fields. This is terrible for my database. I can't find the information anywhere.

How can I setup a field so that you can write to the field which is going to be called diary , so that you can enter notes then it will add that note with a time stamp within the logs but you are not able to remove the notes already there?

Hello again everyone. We have a new question that none of our in-house people can figure out. Is it possible to create 42 records at one time in numerical order in a list layout. We have 42 seats in a split class and instead of creating a record for Seat 1 | Hannah Jones | Mrs. Wingfield. I'm new to this (not even sure if I'm posting in the right forum!), and I have a question about container fields. I'd like my container fields to store only a reference to a file (mostly .pdf archived documents). I can get this to happen, but then when I share the database (right now just using FileMaker; will update to Server soon!), users in an opposite-platform environment cannot open the file. All the .pdf files are stored in a networked location that all computers are able to access. I know that the problem is that the file path is different on Windows and Mac. Hello. I am very new to Filemaker Pro 9. I'm trying to set up my database so that data can only be entered when a new record is created (and only at the moment of creation) or in find mode. In Layout Mode, I have tried Field/Control -> Behavior -> unchecked 'allow field to be entered in browse mode'. This works for allowing entry only in find mode but prevents the entry of data into a new record. Any suggestions/information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Not sure if this falls under layouts. But I have a specific layout where I would much rather be able to scroll up and down with my mouse wheel, instead of scrolling through the records. It is a submission page, so the users won't need to scroll through any records... the page is large, and it would make it faster for them if they could scroll up and down. Any ideas?

These are screen captures of a new problem. Some layouts are developing blank regions. They are cleared if you "wipe them" with the debug window or another app window, or if you drag them beyond the FMP borders and then back in, basically effecting a refresh of sorts. Any thoughts or help? thanks

I am testing a small amount of data in a FM file on a 2009 MacBook Pro with 4Gb of memory and a 128Gb Solid state drive. The file was 60GB on 9/18 and is now 155.7Gb. I have been entering very little data during this time. I have been working with this file for over a year and a half without anything like this happening. Because I am not entering much data the file has been around 50 to 60Gb for the last year. The slowness occurred at during this same period and I am not talking about slowness regarding processing data. This question might have a really simple answer but i just can't seem to find the answer by myself. I have a database called phone file which has a bunch of phone numbers we use at the office. Every time someone opens the phone file the window in which it comes up in is really really small. Everyone always has to re size the window so that all the phones are viewable. Hi, I am trying to create a simple inventory tracking solution for our shop. I have started with the template provided in FMP9 and working from their. i have added quantity fields for a count of how many items i have. Id like to create a layout which has 3 (or more?) colums. The colum would populate with all the items in a catagory as selected from a drop down list of categoriesavailable at the top of each colum. I have made a Welcome screen that opens each time my data base is launched. I have a field that is a set of radio button (Yes – No). It seems FM10 will show vertical scrollbars when it doesn’t need to when in browse mode with subsummary parts. See the attached file for more information. I have two tables: project records and outcome recordss. Not every project produces outcomes. I have a functioning button on the projects layout that triggers a script that finds and displays outcomes that cite the currently displayed project as their 'parent'. I would like to exclude this button from the layout if there are no find results. (Or at the very least, change it so that it says "No related outcomes"). Here's a very simple question: What is the purpose of the vertical line that shows up on the right side of a layout? You can move it from side to side in layout mode but it doesn't show up in Browse or Preview mode and doesn't seem to effect pagination.

Hi- I am having a most annoying and frustrating problem with the screen redrawing coupled with a slow checkbox response in FMP10. I have a list layout that has a checkbox with every record. I also have two scripts that allow one to either “Mark” or “Clear” checkboxes in a found set (and a third button that allows one to find a marked set- not a script). When I manually select a check box, FMP first takes a second (or more) to change its focus to that record… then marks the checkbox. If FMPs focus is already on a record, the checkbox response is okay. Manually unmarking the checkbox elicits similar response characteristics (FMP has to “think” about it). …

When I copy fields to a layout, from another layout, the new fields are added to the tab order. These fields, by design, will never be included the tab order, so I have to redo the tab order for the form. Is there a property or attribute that I can assign to these fields which will keep them from being added to the tab order when they are copied to another form?

Is there a way to programmatically determine the number of subsummary occurences in list view/browse mode. I have a function that calculates the minimum height of a window (based simply on the layout size and the foundcount). I would like to include subsummaries on this window now in FM10, but I cannot do so without knowing how this will affect the window height. If there’s an easy way to determine the number of times the subsummary will occur given the foundset, then I should be able to factor that into the window height function.

I do a lot of work with database structures with simple series of one-to-many parent-child tables like: Room > Shelf > Box > Item Let's say I want to allow a user to print out a report that inventories the entire contents of their storage facility, which contains several rooms, etc. (Each Item is in a box on a shelf in a room). I've seen database solutions with perfect placement of navigation and subnavigation across tons of layouts. There must be some automation tool out there that allows you to build these because doing it by hand is so time consuming. You need to move the navbar a bit or swap two buttons, and you're into it for another couple of hours doing basically nothing. So, what am I missing? I have tried searching for layout automation, auto layout pasting, layout navigation and I'm coming up with nothing. What's the secret here? Thanks much! James

I've looked into the JoinDemo.fp7 (found somewhere in this forum) to better understand this type of relationship. I haven't used auto-completion option for Field Setups much so I don't know if this qualifies as a feature or just odd behavior... If I type a few characters into a field and it matches multiple entries then they are displayed in a drop-down style as expected. However, if I use the delete key to remove all of the characters then the list does not disappear. Instead all of the prior entries into this field suddenly appear. The behavior is different if the auto-completion feature matched only one prior entry. Deleting the text makes the list disappear (as I would expect). Feature or odd behavior?

I thought I had this figured out. I have a Layout that is supposed to be in a certain font. So when I created the layout, I configured the field to be a certain font and size. This was working perfectly for 95% of my records. But for some reason, several records are coming in as a different font. I can't determine why. How is the record's Font superceding the field's set font. Any ideas?

Hi, I generally un-check "save record changes automatically" option in data entry list views. But the problem is about serial numbers. Order No field is auto enter serial number field. If the user creates new record and don't save it, record automatically deleted but it does not roll back serial number. I know this is not a bug of FileMaker but it is not the case I want. So, I am searching for a best way to do it. Attached is a layout I am trying to build that will track multiple items through the development process. The problem is that it runs slow. How do I determine if a record has been saved more than once? I have a field called "RecordStatus" in every table. I want to display the entered user, entered date and entered time in this field. If the record has been edited after the initial entry I want to display (in addition to the entered data fields previously described) the modified user, modified date and modified time. To get the result I want, I have compared the entered user and modified user along with the entered timestamp and the modified timestamp. Since the entered timestamp and the modified timestamp will always be different, all six fields of information show up on every entry. Any ideas?

I have a button that I created named "Print Barcodes" I have that button assigned to a script. Question: Is there a fast way to change the text on the button. I seem to remember that there is a way. Right now, I am having to unassign the Button Step, change the text, then reassign the button setup. I would just rather change the text while I leave the button setup in place. Thanks, CCB

I am trying to make a Layout that will help me assign lockers in a locker room. If a locker is assigned, I would like the locker number to turn red. I have each locker as a separate record in: LockerTable I have locks in a separate table as I reassign them each year. I have students in another table. Each time I assign a student to a locker, I have a field in the LockerTable that automatically changes to the number 1. Hi I have table "Job Profile"(ID, fkId_Classification, "Salary From", "Salary To"...) and Classification(ID[pk], Classification, From, To) My goal is to pick a Classfication from a Drop down list and populates the "Job Profile":"Salary From" n "Salary To" from Classification:From n To. Now the Classification table will be updated from time to time when new salary scales are proposed. But do not want the old "Job Profile" records to be updated. When it is committed its done. Hi, script A raises a pop window, the user click selects an item in the popw portal row which executes script B. Script B does stuff bts, then closes the popw. Under windows (xp/fm9A), the main layout window is maximised to hide the application window bar. When the popw opens however, the main layout undergoes an 'adjust' behaviour by showing the application window application menu bar. It is not instructed to do so. Under mac (osx6/fm10A) it just raises the pop without changing the presentation on the parent window How does one prevent the main window showing the application menu bar as the popw is opened? I have an odd issue with on of my databases. This is only happening to on of the databases i have on my FileMaker server. When i open the database, instead of being aligned to the left, it opens all the way to the right (see attached screen shot). Is there a setting or variable to change this so it opens aligned on the left like every other database i have? Thanks

I have a container field which has an object name. When I assign a button script to that field, the object name for the container field disappears. If I try to renter the object name for that field, it will not accept it saying that the object name is already in use. Any ideas? Also, is there a way I can attach a sample file to this post?

I find that navigation scripts to a field is very limited in control. If the button script is any where below the field you like to navigate back to,when you click on the button then that field appears as the first line at the top of the page, not in the center of the page. Likewise when your button is above the intended field, when you click on the button to navigate to that field it appears at the last line at the bottom of the page. Normal thinking or navigation on this should be that you end up with that intended field somewhere in the center of the page/layout your viewing. Please tell me if my thinking is flawed here? Or if I am missing something?

I have a field that is a text calculation. What it does is takes several other field's info, and puts it all together here. The problem is, two of my other fields are numbers, that have been formatted as currency, so they show the decimal places and a $ sign. But my calculation in the main field only copies the raw data. I want it to copy the $ and the decimal places.

How do you stop users from entering restricted data into a field. I am more interested in restricting symbols etc "#,%,@". I found a single post last night but cant seem to bring it up again and I threw away the notes I had started working on a solution. I think the post I saw was about validation by calc. Jim

I created a tabbed layout using "Insert Tab Control," but I want the different tabs to correspond to different tables. FM doesn't seem to allow more than one table per layout (unless you use portals, etc.) Is there any way to have a tabbed interface where each tab corresponds to a different table? The only reason is I want a tabbed layout is that it's attractive and easy for users to use.

I have thousand of contacts in my DB, and I would like to create a page in the same DB, or also external to the DB, where I can see only selected contacts. To me the week always starts on Monday; using the same shard FM database, some of my Mac clients get Monday on the left hand column but others get Sunday. Any idea how to change this? - I guess it is the OS not FM?

I feel like I am missing the obvious, but I give up. I created a "product card" template. Which users have populated several fields. Then they print it from the "product card" summary screen. Which is basically a high res graphic of an empty product card, with the information overlayed on it. I am trying to use very specific fonts on this layout. Regardless of what font the records are stored in. I am having trouble getting Filemaker to see any of the special fonts I am trying to use, even though they are in my Font Folder of my computer. no matter what! I can't get it to work in my existing database, so I made a new one with one table, 2 fields, and 2 records. In the first record, fields 'A' and 'B' contain the values 'A' and 'B'. IN the second record, 'A' contains 'A' and B is empty. On the layout, A is about an inch above B, in the body, and the body is 2 inches tall. B is set to sliding based on all above and 'reduce the size of the enclosing part' is checked. In preview mode, the body parts are the same size for both records. I would have expected the body part for record 2 to reduce to the bottom of field A--the only other object on the layout. What am I missing? Thanks, …
