I have a database that has a half dozen linked tables. As I develop this, I am going to need about 100 different layout views. I can do this with lots of separate layers or I can do this with fewer layers and more tabbed folders within those layers. My question is about efficiency and speed. As the user navigates through this database would there be any performance issues favoring one approach over the other?

Help! I'm trying to display an animated gif on my layout using a web viewer. I can easily set up an absolute path to the file to accomplish this, but that's not a solid solution - if the computer gets renamed, replaced, if the database file gets moved, even if the .gif is moved with it, - anything could happen - the absolute path breaks. I can set up a calculated relative path to the database file, but if the databse does not reside on the startup drive, it's broken as well. (It's the way the path is calculated on a Mac - I can elaborate on why if anyone wants/needs.) Even then, if the database and the .gif are seperated, it's broken as well. A much better solut…

I have a table with information about films that includes 6 container fields with images from the film. I want to create a layout that will print a label for each film featuring *1* of the 6 images depending on the user's selection. I was thinking what I could do was to havea field that allows the user to enter a number from 1 through 6 corrsponding to the image of choice and then run a simple 'Case' calculation that would read the number and enter the appropriate image in a 7th container field called, say, 'LabelPicture'. Has anyone noticed strange behaviour with fields that are in the header, in FMP10. In FMP 10, in list mode, with fields in the header. One thing that draws me to FMP is how esthetically pleasing one can make the layouts. So I must be missing something basic when it comes to portals. I have a portal with alternating color rows. Looks great when no row is selected but when a row is selected all the fields turn to the same color and good-bye attractive layout. I know how to make the fields uneditable and have the user do her editing in another set of fields outside of the portal, but that isn't desirable. My goal is for only the selected row to change colors but not all the rows. Is this possible?

Now that the record browser is on the toolbar rather than the status area, when in preview mode in a custom menu set that shows the status area, the user can not navigate to the next pages - it seems locked. It works fine in FM 9.0 I have allowed toolbars, but apparently that is only for the Formatting Toolbar, but that doesn't help. I am not sure why FM did this. Most screens are landscape and have more space in the horizontal than in the vertical plane to give a status area. I need users to be able to preview pages while preventing them customising the toolbar. Am I missing something?

I have a layout that I want to extend several fields on and then slide them upward when necessary but it appears that I have reached the maximum possible length of a layout or at least the body part. I have stretched the total layout to 111 inches (all but 1/4 inch of which is the body) and I cannot stretch it any further. Has anyone else encountered this and if so any ideas about how to deal with it? Thanks in advance.

How do I do this? Hi, I have a FileMaker Pro 9 database that I am using to catalog material from 40 Indian tribes, and group by material type. Material types includes objects, images, people, media and "stories". My goal is to set up the database so the client can input all of this material on one or two layouts, each layout appearing to be one tribe's slew of material. Can you create a global field that can be for all tables in a database, or do you have to access it from one table to another via the relationship? For example on many of my screens it will say the year 2009. I set a global field in tableA with the year. I want my layouts from tableB to also say 2009. Can I create this global field just once? Let me explain what I am attempting and hopefully someone can provide advice as to the best solution. I have 2 tables. Projects & Assets. Each project is made of multiple assets. When a single asset is entered into FM, it is given a Project name. This project name is created by choosing from 3 value lists I have created. The field names are: 1 - SerialID 2 - CategoryID 3 - ShortName I need all three of those fields to create the ProjectName field. How do I do this? I have a value list of fields called school names. In the custom fields box (or in the entry screen we allow edit) we keep adding new school names as we get them. Here's some background info: I'm an optometrist making a patient exam data solution. Some patients will have tests done via specialized equipment and the data is printed onto paper. I'll scan the results (2 tests on each of left and right eye, thus 4 tests per patient) and import them as jpgs into the patients record in Filemaker. I now display each test as a small "thumbnail" image in a one of 4 small container fields on the exam layout. I recently upgraded to FMP 10 Advanced from 9, and while happy with many of the new featurs, today I'm appalled to discover that some very basic functionality in one of my file seems to have been compromised. What I built in 9 is a portal from a Main table to a 'Join' table that displays keyword 'tags' from a 'Lexicon' Table on the other side of the Join table. I've created a report and want to show the monthly sales by employees, but I want it ranked from highest to lowest value. My report consists of the following: sub-summary besed on Month_num (contains month name) sub-summary based on employee ID (shows firstname, lastname, summary_sales_total) No report body The report displays the information correctly showing each month followed by the employee and their aggregated sales totals for that month. My only problem is I want to sort it from highest ranking sales to lowest for each month. No matter how I've tried to sort it, it won't come out correctly.

First, forgive me if I'm posting in the wrong place, I'm new here. : I'm trying to create a search layout that has a few different text boxes that each search different fields in a table. Ideally, I want to be able to write a script that finds the record/records that best match the search criteria and then reports them into a portal. The program is still very new to me and I'm struggling with the interface and syntax. I have an Value List wherein ID is first field (do not display) and 2nd field is Name. The ID is a one to many relationship. In Forms, the related field stores the ID, but I want the Name to display. If I choose to display data from the Value List as a Popup Menu, it displays the Name correctly. If, however, I display as a Dropdown box, it displays the ID (1st field) instead of the Name. (It wouldn't be so bad if I didn't hate the popup menu -- it gets in the way when I'm tabbing through a record.) I was informed by a veteran programmer that this is an irritating "bug". This is kind of a simple question but I can't figure it out. When grouping objects you hit the [command] + [R]. In order to [color:red]un-group (according to drop down menu) you hit [arrow] + [command] + [R]. Nothing happens when I combine these keys. Is there more than one arrow key? I'm grouping & un-grouping all the time and this is getting a bit annoying. What am I missing?

Hi, I have a product table which has 10 container fields within the table (to hold a varying number of imagers per product) - [yep they probably should have been put in a separate table but they weren't - have to accept that pro tem!] I would like to produce a report that shows the images one per page. I am happy that the report will only be run for one product at a time. This is on a project tracking database. I have a report (layout) that shows project details. One of the fields is a note field. There can be multiple notes per project. The notes are stored in a separate table (projectID, timestamp, note) The report is showing the very first note it finds, but the customer wants only the most recent note on this report Is there a way I can tell the report what note to display? I can think of a way to solve this issue if it were in PHP with mySQL... But I cant quite wrap my head around this filemaker thing! Hopefully I am being descriptive enough.

I have a table called Contacts where customer data, general contact data and supplier data is stored. Each record is either tagged as being "Customer", "Contact", or "Supplier". I have a report that lists payment categories and all the payments in that category and then has a sum at the bottom. Here's a seemingly simple problem: I would like to use the Go To Object script step to go to a field with a pop-up menu, and display the pop-up menu automatically. In other words, when the user clicks a buttons, he is taken to a field by object name, and the value list shows right away. I have a layout setup in form view designed to print multiple pages, depending on the amount of text contained in each report. I have a few signature lines that I want to print out at the bottom of the last page. I set the sliding/printing on all fields inside the body section to sliding up based on all above and also reduce the size of the enclosing part. I believe the title footer will print the first page and not the last, does anyone know how to accomplish this task? Your help would be appreciated.

I'm trying to use the values entered in a "Ignore Words" value list during a calculation to set a catalog number for film titles (for example, ignoring words like "the" and "a"). I would assume I would use the ValueListNames function, but not sure how exactly it works. How do I test if a text string is in that value list? I tried something along the lines of If firstword = ValueListNames( Get (Filename); 'Ignore Words List") But that didn't go so well. Any thoughts?

I have a portal on a layout in which I need to show a number of fields and buttons (so that the portal row looks like a record in list view as opposed to table view). How can stop the portal row from showing as active if the user happens to click in the portal row? I want the user to be able to click on the buttons as normal. All the fields in the portal have been set to not allow entry in Browse/Find modes. Any advice?

Hello, I've got a page I would like to create, and can't work out a way to do it. I want to list all my clients at the top half of the page. I then want the bottom left of my page to display Client related details based on who is selected in the top list. I have set up Tabs named by Position, i.e. Attorneys, Managers. The named tabs are part of the Header; the Body includes the lower part of the tab control. Each tab (built like a List) includes pertinent fields based on positon. The FoundSet is different for each tab. When the Attorneys tab is selected, I want only attorneys to display. I put a transparent button on the tab to run a script for each tab. However, the user has to press the Tab twice before the script runs. Is there a better way? Thank you.

Twitter question from DillionSG Option 1: Merge field - While editing a layout go to "Insert" "Merge Field" (Ctrl-M on windows) Option 2: Edit the field behavior to not allow being entered in browse mode. Nice thing here is you can set it to be entered in Find mode so they can search by the field but not edit it. Option 3: By security roles - little advanced, don't have time to go into it, but could be setup and used eventually. Kevin

Hi there, I am looking for a way to make a portal completely „non-clickable“. On my layout there are two tabs: The Edit tab contains the normal portal where related records can be accessed the usual way. On the View tab I’d like to show in certain cases just a greyed out image of the portal. I know that I can set the field behaviour of my portal fields so that the user cannot enter them in Browse mode. But the scroll bar would still be accessible. Thank you, Mike

I hope I am in the right section for this question. I have only done very basic databases with FileMaker as of now, and basically no scripting. I am sure this is a ridiculously easy question for most of you. I have a drop-down list with several values. What I want to do is when a certain value is selected, change to a layout associated with that value. I think I know the basic idea of how to do this, but not exactly. Hi, How do you guys would manage a menu in Filemaker (or a forum categories could have the same complexity)? Each menu item can have some child menu item or not. If there's no child, then there's a link to a layout. Here is the structure: menuItem (pkMenuItemID, fkParentMenuID, description, gotoLayoutName, uiParentDescription, ...) So as you can see, there's a self join. Hi, I have a portal for users to input data. After users input the first two fields, I want to do a search to see if there are any existing records in the portal have the same values in these two fields and then highlight the existing record for users. I have a field in the same layout that displays a total weight of a product in stock. By the use of the product the weights gets lower, I have a conditional calculation that makes the text red when it reaches minus (-). Is there a way to calculate the color green when the weight hits close to zero (0) amount like as a warning that the product is low in stock. so for example 1000 g - regular color 50g - green color -1 - red color. Hello I have 2 portals on a tabbed layout based on a self-join between a table of booking records. The first tab displays sub-sets of bookings according to Payment_Method "filtered" by a selection in a global field outside the portal. One Payment_Method is "credit card". On the second tab I want to display records where Payment_Method="credit card" and where another field CCAuthCode=0. Is there a way of doing this without creating another TO of the booking records. I have a database I created for the company I work for. We schedule service technicians on a daily basis. What you will see below is a copy of a layout/form we use to schedule our techs. Hi, I have a Song table and a Keyword table. Let's say the Categories in the Keyword table are Instruments, Genre, Tempo. Each category has its own field in the Song table which is populated by keywords in that Category. E.g. Instruments would have Timpani, Guitar, Harp, etc. and the user would check off the Instruments that apply. I have a layout that contains 2 date fields amongst a bunch of other assorted fields. When I use a script to insert a date into or even just select one of the specific date fields, the date field selected is always the leftmost one in table view. In any other layout view (form or list), the correct date field is selected, but If I switch to table, it is always the leftmost date field no matter which one I specify in the script. If I swap physical positions in table view then, the other date field is selected with the exact same script. Hello all, I'm trying to solve a problem, and need a bit of guidance in the easiest solution. I'm modifying an existing db to suit my needs. In one table I have a list of items sold. So there will be anywhere between 1-10+ items (records) per transaction. Each item ordered is a separate record. Each "sale" has its own invoice number. For example, for invoice 0001, there could be 10 records in the sales history. So there will be 10 records and the constant will be the customer number and the invoice. First of all, I wanted to say that everyone on this forum is amazing and has been soo helpful. Here's my dilemma. I'm working on a commissions database for our sales department. Right now, whenever a radio box is checked as a recoat, the commissions will zero out since they can not recieve commission on a recoat. Our problem lies whenever we credit someone for the bad material but then they want a recoat, so then we have to charge them for it, which would recieve commission. I am attempting to print receipts with the a Zebra LP 2844. I can't seem to control the paper length let alone get the font printing in the correct direction. It worked fine with labels while I was developing this module, but now that I have the receipt paper in use all bets seem to be off. Anyone have experience or tips to share? Hello, I am trying to create a ValueList from a global field that contains a set of data separated by a carriage return. The reason is that I have a CSV Text values with carriage returns on the global field, I want the user to specify which line item he wants from the CSV Text field. The long way is to dump CSV data file into a table and then create it throug the Value List. Is there a shorter way, where I can directly populate the ValueList without creating a table. I know you can extract the ValueList through the function ValueListItems, but i want to do the opposite, to push the data into the ValueList. Thanks for any help...

Hi, I am new to programming and I am using File Maker Pro 8 advanced. I have requirement in which I have defined the radio buttons for selection of either payment options (Through Bank details or Credit Card details)as: when we select Bank Details radio button it should display the fields of Bank details below and when we select Credit Card details it should show Credit Card fields on the same page. I want a button to 'disappear' under certain conditions. But when the conditional format is applied, the 3-dimensional shading for the button still remains. Buttons that have been around forever (FM6 or earlier) don't seem to have the 3 dimensional effect so do disappear. Is there an option for button formatting that removes the 3-d effect so I can make the button completely 'disappear'?

I am using the the following conditional formating rule to control the attributes of a button: If (GetLayoutObjectAttribute ( "Tab 1" ;"isFrontTabPanel") = "0" ; 1 ; 0 ) My Layout has two tabs. I want he button to behave differently depending on which tab is active. What I am finding is that the formatting works correctly, but it does not take effect until a "Refresh Window" is done. For example, I click on Tab 2 and the button is grayed out the way I want it. I click on Tab 1 and it remains (incorrectly) grayed out. I want it to take effect as soon as the tab is selected. I get the desired results only if I do a Refresh Window after each tab selection. …

I'm using a radio button to select record from one or more matching records from a related table. So far, simple. Now, when I mass import data from CSV or merge format, and visit the record for the first time, none of the radio button is selected. I want FM to pick the first button (or it doesn't really matter which) and just go ahead until I change the selection manually. The thing is that I use this radio button to select which related file to display on the browser. This part is used just for the display/browser functionality and it doesn't affect the value of the stored data in the table. Am trying to plan database and would like input as to best method to create the following: I want to apply category(s) to a record. (its a table listing schools and there are numerous categories they can be a member of such as elementary, middle, high school, reserve, and other properties). This is a data entry problem but I can't see which other forum it should go in. I have looked in FM Prefs, and there isn't a "highlight contents when tabbing" option. The reason for this is that I often have cause to duplicate records where all data is to be the same apart from a few fields. To give one example : let's say I duplicated a record (Command-D) of which the first 3 fields are to remain the same, the last two need changes. Say I have a database which was used to control the stock of pets in a pet shop Animals_table has field "Animal_type" which can be Dog, Cat or Goldfish. Then it has "Animal_breed" which would contain a specific breed. Dogs_table contains one record per dog in the pet shop. I want to include a pop-up field of Dog breeds, based on the beeds available in "Animals_table". It's obviously trivial to create value list which contains the breeds of all dogs, cats and goldfish, but how do I filter this value list so that it only contains dog breeds? --Jim

I'm stumped with a little problem I can't believe I've never encountered before: I have a little text box in a portal that displays keywords from a lexicon. I've made it long enough to handle 99% of the keywords, but I'm concerned that in some odd cases the user won't see the entire keyword. When you enter a field in Browse mode it does that nice automatic thing where it pops open taller to reveal the whole contents of the field -- but I *don't* want the user to be able to enter the field in Browse mode and change the spellings etc. Is there a simple or clever way to handle this sort of visibility issue? If possible I would like my database to have navigation tabs along the top of each layout, as well as a set of navigation buttons down the side of each layout. Hello Everyone, I am currently trying to add a set of pop-up menus that allow for us to select what we want for a certain record. I am trying to format the menus as follow. Pop-menu 1) working, not working, in school etc. I want menu 2) based on the selection of menu 1 to give me a related list. Menu 3) needs to be populated based on menu 2 menu 4) needs to be populated based on menu 3 Does anyone know the best method of doing this? I have a letter that has a sub summary inside the 2nd paragraph. I have it viewing in Preview correctly but when I use the Save as Pdf. script step, it only allows me to use either the current record or all records being browsed to be printed. Does anyone have a work around so that I can get just the sections I want to print that have more than one record???

Yesturday, out of no where, some of my fonts started to look blurred or fuzzy and I have no idea how to fix it. It's only the bold fonts (arial) and a couple others. It has been working fine for years and just started this. Does anyone know of any solutions I can try to fix this?
