  3. I have a database that has a half dozen linked tables. As I develop this, I am going to need about 100 different layout views. I can do this with lots of separate layers or I can do this with fewer layers and more tabbed folders within those layers. My question is about efficiency and speed. As the user navigates through this database would there be any performance issues favoring one approach over the other?

    Help! I'm trying to display an animated gif on my layout using a web viewer. I can easily set up an absolute path to the file to accomplish this, but that's not a solid solution - if the computer gets renamed, replaced, if the database file gets moved, even if the .gif is moved with it, - anything could happen - the absolute path breaks. I can set up a calculated relative path to the database file, but if the databse does not reside on the startup drive, it's broken as well. (It's the way the path is calculated on a Mac - I can elaborate on why if anyone wants/needs.) Even then, if the database and the .gif are seperated, it's broken as well. A much better solut…

    I have a table with information about films that includes 6 container fields with images from the film. I want to create a layout that will print a label for each film featuring *1* of the 6 images depending on the user's selection. I was thinking what I could do was to havea field that allows the user to enter a number from 1 through 6 corrsponding to the image of choice and then run a simple 'Case' calculation that would read the number and enter the appropriate image in a 7th container field called, say, 'LabelPicture'.   9. One thing that draws me to FMP is how esthetically pleasing one can make the layouts. So I must be missing something basic when it comes to portals. I have a portal with alternating color rows. Looks great when no row is selected but when a row is selected all the fields turn to the same color and good-bye attractive layout. I know how to make the fields uneditable and have the user do her editing in another set of fields outside of the portal, but that isn't desirable. My goal is for only the selected row to change colors but not all the rows. Is this possible?

    Now that the record browser is on the toolbar rather than the status area, when in preview mode in a custom menu set that shows the status area, the user can not navigate to the next pages - it seems locked. It works fine in FM 9.0 I have allowed toolbars, but apparently that is only for the Formatting Toolbar, but that doesn't help. I am not sure why FM did this. Most screens are landscape and have more space in the horizontal than in the vertical plane to give a status area. I need users to be able to preview pages while preventing them customising the toolbar. Am I missing something?

    I have a layout that I want to extend several fields on and then slide them upward when necessary but it appears that I have reached the maximum possible length of a layout or at least the body part. I have stretched the total layout to 111 inches (all but 1/4 inch of which is the body) and I cannot stretch it any further. Has anyone else encountered this and if so any ideas about how to deal with it? Thanks in advance.

  16. Can you create a global field that can be for all tables in a database, or do you have to access it from one table to another via the relationship? For example on many of my screens it will say the year 2009. I set a global field in tableA with the year. I want my layouts from tableB to also say 2009. Can I create this global field just once? When a single asset is entered into FM, it is given a Project name. This project name is created by choosing from 3 value lists I have created.     Here's some background info: I'm an optometrist making a patient exam data solution. Some patients will have tests done via specialized equipment and the data is printed onto paper. I'll scan the results (2 tests on each of left and right eye, thus 4 tests per patient) and import them as jpgs into the patients record in Filemaker.     I recently upgraded to FMP 10 Advanced from 9, and while happy with many of the new featurs, today I'm appalled to discover that some very basic functionality in one of my file seems to have been compromised. What I built in 9 is a portal from a Main table to a 'Join' table that displays keyword 'tags' from a 'Lexicon' Table on the other side of the Join table.     I've created a report and want to show the monthly sales by employees, but I want it ranked from highest to lowest value. My report consists of the following: sub-summary besed on Month_num (contains month name) sub-summary based on employee ID (shows firstname, lastname, summary_sales_total) No report body The report displays the information correctly showing each month followed by the employee and their aggregated sales totals for that month. My only problem is I want to sort it from highest ranking sales to lowest for each month. No matter how I've tried to sort it, it won't come out correctly.

Ideally, I want to be able to write a script that finds the record/records that best match the search criteria and then reports them into a portal.   28. I have an Value List wherein ID is first field (do not display) and 2nd field is Name. The ID is a one to many relationship. In Forms, the related field stores the ID, but I want the Name to display. If I choose to display data from the Value List as a Popup Menu, it displays the Name correctly. If, however, I display as a Dropdown box, it displays the ID (1st field) instead of the Name.     This is kind of a simple question but I can't figure it out. When grouping objects you hit the [command] + [R]. In order to [color:red]un-group (according to drop down menu) you hit [arrow] + [command] + [R]. Nothing happens when I combine these keys. Is there more than one arrow key? I'm grouping & un-grouping all the time and this is getting a bit annoying. What am I missing?

  39. This is on a project tracking database. I have a report (layout) that shows project details. One of the fields is a note field. There can be multiple notes per project. The notes are stored in a separate table (projectID, timestamp, note) The report is showing the very first note it finds, but the customer wants only the most recent note on this report Is there a way I can tell the report what note to display?   44. Here's a seemingly simple problem: I would like to use the Go To Object script step to go to a field with a pop-up menu, and display the pop-up menu automatically.     I have a layout setup in form view designed to print multiple pages, depending on the amount of text contained in each report. I have a few signature lines that I want to print out at the bottom of the last page. I set the sliding/printing on all fields inside the body section to sliding up based on all above and also reduce the size of the enclosing part. I believe the title footer will print the first page and not the last, does anyone know how to accomplish this task? Your help would be appreciated.

    I'm trying to use the values entered in a "Ignore Words" value list during a calculation to set a catalog number for film titles (for example, ignoring words like "the" and "a"). I would assume I would use the ValueListNames function, but not sure how exactly it works. How do I test if a text string is in that value list? I then want the bottom left of my page to display Client related details based on who is selected in the top list.   52. I have set up Tabs named by Position, i.e. Attorneys, Managers. The named tabs are part of the Header; the Body includes the lower part of the tab control. Each tab (built like a List) includes pertinent fields based on positon. The FoundSet is different for each tab. When the Attorneys tab is selected, I want only attorneys to display. I put a transparent button on the tab to run a script for each tab. However, the user has to press the Tab twice before the script runs. Is there a better way? Thank you.

  55. Hi there, I am looking for a way to make a portal completely „non-clickable“. On my layout there are two tabs: The Edit tab contains the normal portal where related records can be accessed the usual way. On the View tab I’d like to show in certain cases just a greyed out image of the portal. I know that I can set the field behaviour of my portal fields so that the user cannot enter them in Browse mode. But the scroll bar would still be accessible. Thank you, Mike

If there's no child, then there's a link to a layout. Here is the structure: menuItem (pkMenuItemID, fkParentMenuID, description, gotoLayoutName, uiParentDescription, ...) So as you can see, there's a self join. By the use of the product the weights gets lower, I have a conditional calculation that makes the text red when it reaches minus (-). Is there a way to calculate the color green when the weight hits close to zero (0) amount like as a warning that the product is low in stock. so for example 1000 g - regular color 50g - green color -1 - red color.     Hello I have 2 portals on a tabbed layout based on a self-join between a table of booking records. The first tab displays sub-sets of bookings according to Payment_Method "filtered" by a selection in a global field outside the portal. One Payment_Method is "credit card". On the second tab I want to display records where Payment_Method="credit card" and where another field CCAuthCode=0. Is there a way of doing this without creating another TO of the booking records. Each category has its own field in the Song table which is populated by keywords in that Category. E.g.     I have a layout that contains 2 date fields amongst a bunch of other assorted fields. When I use a script to insert a date into or even just select one of the specific date fields, the date field selected is always the leftmost one in table view. In any other layout view (form or list), the correct date field is selected, but If I switch to table, it is always the leftmost date field no matter which one I specify in the script. If I swap physical positions in table view then, the other date field is selected with the exact same script.     Hello all, I'm trying to solve a problem, and need a bit of guidance in the easiest solution. I'm modifying an existing db to suit my needs. In one table I have a list of items sold. So there will be anywhere between 1-10+ items (records) per transaction. Each item ordered is a separate record. Each "sale" has its own invoice number. Right now, whenever a radio box is checked as a recoat, the commissions will zero out since they can not recieve commission on a recoat.   80. Hello, I am trying to create a ValueList from a global field that contains a set of data separated by a carriage return. The reason is that I have a CSV Text values with carriage returns on the global field, I want the user to specify which line item he wants from the CSV Text field. The long way is to dump CSV data file into a table and then create it throug the Value List. Is there a shorter way, where I can directly populate the ValueList without creating a table.     I want a button to 'disappear' under certain conditions. But when the conditional format is applied, the 3-dimensional shading for the button still remains. Buttons that have been around forever (FM6 or earlier) don't seem to have the 3 dimensional effect so do disappear. Now, when I mass import data from CSV or merge format, and visit the record for the first time, none of the radio button is selected. I want FM to pick the first button (or it doesn't really matter which) and just go ahead until I change the selection manually. The reason for this is that I often have cause to duplicate records where all data is to be the same apart from a few fields.     Say I have a database which was used to control the stock of pets in a pet shop Animals_table has field "Animal_type" which can be Dog, Cat or Goldfish. Then it has "Animal_breed" which would contain a specific breed. Dogs_table contains one record per dog in the pet shop. I want to include a pop-up field of Dog breeds, based on the beeds available in "Animals_table".     I'm stumped with a little problem I can't believe I've never encountered before: I have a little text box in a portal that displays keywords from a lexicon. I've made it long enough to handle 99% of the keywords, but I'm concerned that in some odd cases the user won't see the entire keyword. When you enter a field in Browse mode it does that nice automatic thing where it pops open taller to reveal the whole contents of the field -- but I *don't* want the user to be able to enter the field in Browse mode and change the spellings etc. Is there a simple or clever way to handle this sort of visibility issue? I have it viewing in Preview correctly but when I use the Save as Pdf. script step, it only allows me to use either the current record or all records being browsed to be printed.
