I am a little confused over as to what the (localhost) address is suppose to be when you load FileMaker Server 8, the first pop-up dialog that asks you to connect. By default it is 127.0.0.1. I have tried the IP of the computer I am trying to host it says: Could not connect to FileMaker Server "(X.X.X.X)". Is it not that I am trying to setup the computer as a server to host the database?? so why do I have to connect, others connects to me?? What IP is suppose to go in there? Thanks

Hi, I am charged with setting up a FMS8 on a Win2k3 server on an Active directory. I plan to use external authentication. Clients will access data using version 8.5 published on Citrix. In the guide it says to "disable Access Control Lists and do not use ACL file permissions". So should users not have access to the data and program folders? Is this because the FM services control access? Also, what will be the name of the FM service(s) listed in Windows services? I will post questions regarding external authentication in that forum. Thanks in advance.

Now that FMI has withdrawn most information about pre-7 versions of Filemaker, I can't figure out what was the last version of MacOS Server that was validated as working with Server 5.5. We are not in a position to move our entire solution to 7. However, the rest of the business is running on Tiger while the FM server remains running on OS9. I would like to get FM Server machine running as modern an OS as possible.

I own a prospecting service that supplies my customers with sales leads and contact info. I want to build a contact management application (Like Act! or Goldmine) to distribute my info to my clients so that they don't have to re-enter the information. This info is RENTED to my clients so therefore I do not want them to be able to export/download/copy this information. In such an application I would have three parent tables: Properties, Company's, and Contacts and I would own the info in these tables. My clients would own and enter the information in the child tables which would include Notes, Call History, Activities, etc. I would like to find a way to limit the amo…

Very strange. Only one User received this error and only once ('copy of FM is damaged...'). I am not at work so don't know the specific error wording. Other Users can sign on as her and perform the same task without error. It happened when she performed a search - simple find on standard field (process has been in place and not modified for 2 years). Do you think our file is damaged? Or is it localized to her system? How will I tell? I would be nervous trusting our served copy when I don't understand what is wrong! The error may never happen again but I don't want to dismiss a possible corruption. I told her to reboot her system but I don't know what to do ab…

FileMaker Server 7 is on Windows 2003 for Small Business Server. I am totally new at this. I need to be hand-held in this area. My server recently crashed, power supply, but got it repaired. But now the clients cannot access the filemaker server. They open up the program on the client workstation, open remote and nothing shows up in the right pane. The address is there, 192.168.16.2, is that the right address? Or is it 127.0.0.0? I spoke with a guy on the phone from support and he says looks like it's corrupt. He had me copy one of the DB files form the server to the client desktop to access it that way. So I opened FileMaker, opened the copied file, and it asked for a …

I was getting a conflict with Apple's Personal Web sharing, so in the dialog that Filemaker put up asking for a new port, I entered "81". It hasn't worked since, and I'm not sure where to change IWP's port back to. (Advanced settings in IWP is grayed out, presumably cause I can't start IWP). I've tried trashing the .plist, zapping PRAM, I still can't turn on IWP. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Hi, I'm trying to figure out if I've got a server bottleneck or if I've got some other issue. I've got a db with about 616K recs that is about 220MB in size. It's FMS8v4 running on an older W2K3 box, 1GB RAM, with dual 1Ghz Xeons and a RAID10 system. This box is targeted for upgrading shortly, so please don't tell me I need some newer hardware. The system CPU monitors never peg, it never runs out of resources, indexing is off, AV scanning is off. I have a function that loops through a portal that displays the results of a complex, multikey join to the above table and writes a unique ID into a temporary printsession field. Then, I call a process that queries the ab…

I have some quick questions regarding a peer to peer network with FileMaker Pro 8.5 Advanced with Windows XP and 4 computers. One being host and 3 other clients. Here comes the firing round: 1. Can the host while hosting use filemaker and the same database which is being hosted as normal operation (add/delete/edit) to the database? 2. Can the host also play around with the layout while the database is being hosted and accessed by clients? Thats all I can think about, will keep adding question when they come up. Thanks for playing.

We've been using the web component with our website now for a couple of years and all was great until today. Today, when users browse to our page, they are suddenly asked for a username and password to view the database... we don't want this... the database is used for our site content management. I checked the settings, and it is set to use the Web Security.fp5 file and it is set with 1 record: All Databases (no master password as it is not needed) Users: All Users Password: (blank) Browse: checked (all other options) blank Any help at all would be great.

I reconfigured my backups so that I was backing up to an external drive rather than FM's "default" folder. While I can conceive of other ways to back up for redundancy's sake, I just re-routed to a firewire external drive. It worked fine--for a day. I didn't bother the to check again until a week later and noticed that nothing had been backed up since the Friday before (the day it was configured). I check the schedules to be sure they were all active--they were. Then I checked the path, they were all the same but NOW I get "Not a valid Path." NOT A VALID PATH?! What the heck. It was valid when it was set up, the dang thing is still connected like it was last week! I…

Folks, I am looking for feedback from anyone who has hosted applications via IWP/FMSA 8.x with multiple files to many users. I have not found much "heres what you can expect" information published anywhere. Having been part of the vendor community for a long time, I full-well understand there are published specs and then there's what you can really expect, so... Feedback wanted: ----------------- Who has experience with this type of deployment on FMSA 8.x and IWP? - relatively small app/file, available only through IWP - many deployed instances of the app/file per server - low user count per app/file - high overall user count per server …

Hello, My setup has NAS server and four computer that have access to it. Each computer is installed with File Maker 8.5 Advance. We have one database file which all 4 users will be simultaneously accessing with full access privilege. Now, how would I go around setting this up? WITHOUT: (1st)opening Filemaker on their machine, (2) clicking Cancel at the "what to open screen", (3) selecting "open recent" and then the top file. Is there a way to do this? If not is there a way to create a "fake database" on each of their computers that will link them to the remote database within FM? Thanks for your help, Kyle

We recently placed one of the files we're working on, onto FMS 5, and the scripts don't seem to be working appropriately, 2 of them specifically. These are meant to be accessed online via the Instant Web Publishing interface. In general these scripts retrieve files by pausing, allowing for data entry into a field and then clicking a button to resume the script. For some reason, the scripts seem to stop after they pause. Any ideas? Whenever we serve up the file via FMP 8 advanced via the IWP the scripts work perfectly fine, so I am convinced that all the steps are web-compatible. Are there certain script steps or actions we need to be aware of that behave diffe…

I am evaluating FMPro for a project. This project is a many-to-many solution with two parent tables and numerous child tables. All tables except one of the parent tables will be on local machines. The one parent table will be on a remote host and will be read only. I'm thinking that since it is a a read only table I may be able to use a VPN instead of FMPro server? As I understand it the runtime of FMPro cannot access a remote file? This means I would need to purchase a copy of FMPro for every user. As I could have 500 - 1000 users this won't work. Any other ideas of how I could do this within FMPro? Any ideas of other solutions that might work for this? I've looked into …

Hello, I am relatively new to FM and currently only have FM6. I am trying to figure out how to share a FM database with a staff person at a remote site. From what I've been reading it sounds like I either have to have my computer (a laptop, so not pratical) on when that person wants to access the data or have a dedicated computer that is always on. Is that correct? Is there an option to have my database on my isp's server, thereby eliminating the need to have a computer on all the time with the database available? I am aware of the option of a static web page, but the remote staff person needs to be able to make changes to the database. We are a very small…

Hi, We just upgraded Filemaker Server 7 Advanced to version 8 Advanced. I created a script that loops through all the records in a large database and measures the time it takes to complete. I was astonished to learn that it repeatedly takes around 40 seconds to complete on macs (g4 and g5 machines) while it takes *1 second* ! to complete on windows 2000 and XP machines. All the machines are on the same LAN. Could someone explain why this is and let me know if there is any way to improve the mac performance ? Also, the mac performance got worse after the upgrade to version 8 server , and the PC performance improved. (what the ?) It was te…

I'm a complete newbie here and desperately need some help....We are on FMP Server 5.5 running on Windows 2003 Standard....we weren't always running on this platform; previously, we had our database running on a iMac OS 9.2 until it literally died. We are running Filemaker 5.5 Server and recently have run into a problem. Filemaker was working fine then suddenly it starts with -20 Cummincation errors. Randomly Filemaker client will display a error window saying -20 Commincations error. We have replaced all the network hardware we can, moved Filemaker to a new server, and made sure none of the computers use Sleep mode. We use Filemaker 5.5 Client on Windows 2000 and XP machines. Server is 5.5 on Windows Server 2003. We have kind of run out of ideas if anyone has dealt with this or has an idea it would be appreciated.

Our FMP database is hosted on an iMac, and somehow, it restarted in the middle of the day with users connected to several of the databases. After that, the server never actual run again because it checks the "integrity" and stuck on forever. We able to open each databases individually on the server itself. They check the integrity and open. Is our database corrupt? Our previous FMP Admin set a backup schedule everyday. How difficult is it to restore the data? Is it better to recover or import the data back? Thank you for your advice,

Hi everyone I am quite new to Filemaker and have come across a problem this morning after a non-expected server shutdown. Basically, my client PC's cannot connect to the databases held on the FM Server. The error I get is: File "dbase_name.fp5" could not be opened: a database with that name (or the same initial 31 characters) is already open; please rename one of the files. Obviously dbase_name is a substituation for the actual database name. I have tried stopping and starting the FM server service, rebooting the server etc, as soon as FM Server starts I get the above message and clients cannot connect to the main database. Is there anyway of fi…

I am currently developing a database on my powerbook and would like other people to be able to acces the data. It seems that Instant Web Publishing would be the best method for this and I have an old G4 that i can use as a server. That computer is a PowerPC 400mhz proccesor with 384mb of RAM and 20gb Hardrive. Before I purchase a copy of OS 10.4 and install everything on that computer I wanted to ask if that machine will be fast enough to allow up to 4 people to use the database. A seperate less important question is about other methods for sharing the data. IWP allows anyone to access the database from anywhere with an internet connection (I have accounts and passwo…

I’m having a problem with logging on a FM8 Advanced Server. I have 2 physical servers, both running Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition. One server is the FMSA8 host, the other runs IIS and the WPE piece. I am able to successfully publish FileMaker data to the web, but there is a strange logging problem. Every time the WPE sends a request to the FMSA8 server, data is returned successfully but an error is logged in the Windows security log file. (see below) This error is only cosmetic, but it’s beginning to be a problem for log auditing – It takes a lot of digging to tell which errors are legitimate failed user login attempts from FMPro clients and which are invalid error…

This office just ordered a second DSL line just for the FM Server. The reason for this is that the dbs need to be accessed remotely, and the networking guy said that the network performace would be badly affected within the office (when accessed from the outide clients) unless FMS wasn't on a separate DSL line. So ... yesterday I connected the server to the new DSL line and guess what ... performance is terrible! I was expecting some performance cost since now the clients would have to access a static IP that, even though is within the office, it's like accessing a remote db. So the question is: can this second line be connected to the office network (somekind o…

Ok so since a true syncing solution isn't cost effective what I would like to do is have a cacheing type solution. Here is the situation: I have a server and 5 mobile users. They are using a database for contact management. What I would like to do is set t so when users open the application it attempts to connect to the server so they have full access to the database however, if a connection cannot be established it will bring up a cached version that was downloaded that last time they connected. When they are working offline they will have limited ability to browse only and not edit the records. Is there an example script out there for this? I am of the mindset that…

We have FMSA 8 set up one one server as a test server. We need to move the file into production, but leave the test server up. I would assume that means we cannot install another copy of the software. Is it possible to install it on two different networks or is that a violation of licensing agreement?

Am I missing something? I am trying to share between 2 Macs, one running FM Pro 8.0, the other FM Pro Advanced 8.5. If I open the DB under 8.0 and enable network sharing, there is no problem accessing the DB from the other Mac under Advanced 8.5. However, if I open the DB under 8.5 Advanced and enable network sharing, I keep getting the error message "host capacity exceeded." No other differences I can see. Does Advanced NOT support sharing? Is there something special which needs to be set in Advanced to enable the same sharing available in regular Pro?

Hello, We're trying to evaluate whether we should purchase a large number of licenses (around 15) of FileMaker Pro, or just purchase Adv Server and use IWP for all our internal connections. The breaking point would be if Adv Server using IWP cannot print summary reports. I noticed in my FM Pro 8.5 Adv that if I check the "Indicate Web Compatibility" box in the Scriptmaker that the Print commands and the Preview Mode command both are grayed out. Since summary reports require you to sort by the break field and can only be viewed as summary reports in Preview Mode, does this mean that you cannot print or view summary reports using IWP? If that's the case, I do…

I am curious what exactly does the backup do?. Does it write the file in a contiguous format or just an exact copy? Does it do any maintenance while writing such as compacting? The reason I am asking is we had a problem file last night that wouldn't open after starting the service. I restored the file from the previous backup and that opened fine. Is it a good practice to restore files from backups periodically or just do the file maintenance on them periodically (compact and optimize)? Is there a difference? Any input would be appreciated.

I have successfully mounted an offsite ftp volume on Mac OS X Server. Now, I am trying to schedule a backup to go to it but the scheduler is not accepting any iterations of the mounted volume pathname. Should it not be ftp:/sysvol/mounted server vol/ ftp:/mounted server vol does not work either It is not validating the path. What am I missing? Thanks, Dick

Hello all, This is my first post here so forgive me if I am in the wrong topic. Here is the situation: I have 4 users with Macbook Pro's with Filemaker 8.5 advanced loaded locally and a Windows server at the office with filemaker server 8. Each user has a file they use for contact management on their computer. They all have essentially the same file and use it regularly. Sinc they are mobile they don't always have an internet connection it's not possible for them to just connect to a hosted version on the server. What I would like is when a user opens the database it searches for the hosted version to synchronize data and update. I really haven't been abl…

Problem on windows small business server 03... Can't shut down FMS 8 service. It tries for 10 minutes and then tells me it couldn't be shut down. (I had to do this for an update, normally its resilliance would make me happy The only work around ive found is changing the startup type to disabled and restarting the system. Anyone know what the issue might be, or experiencing it themselves? Cheers, ~Genx

Well, I have finally brought my database to work and installed it on a Computer running Windows XP Proffesional. When I installed the software I amde sur ethat all users could use the program. So they all have a shortcut to the program and a shortcut to the file. The file is in a folder that can be accessed by everyone. The problem is that none of the users except for me can log in. When they try to, it says permission denied, in a Filemaker Pop up window. I checked that all extended priveledges were granted, not knowing if any of them would help. It didn't help. Has anyone else run into this problem. I only have 5 users now, running FM on one computer (and I ca…

Hello, I recently installed Filemaker Server 8. I have extended privleges set as well as file ownerships set to read/write. Yet when I connect to the server, the hosted database is read remotely as read only. The server has the databse listed as "normal" and I am logging in remotely with a full access account. If I stop the server, the database is no longer read only. Any advice?

This is probably a naive question, but I've searched the posts and I can't find the answer, and since I've never used the server version... If I have a FM server database and have scripts that invoke applescripts (or VBscripts) where does the script run, on the server or on the FM client machine? If we had a server database of 2-4GB, how much data gets transfered across our LAN?

I am on a PC with FM admin connecting to a remote Windows server. I want to be able to close files, copy them off locally to work on, then replace. I believe I read that even if you close the file via Admin, you should ALSO stop the service before doing anything with the files. Is that a must? But CAN I just close then replace files* without stopping the service? PPS I decided to close, stop and replace contents of "live" directory. I left a note for IT to start in AM. It turns out stopping the service hung on "stopping", and although help app was running, the service was hung and inaccessible remotely. Also, IT dept was NOT stopping starting servi…

I have been having some trouble on setting up a Filemaker server access from different part of our LAN. Accessing Filemaker server is ok in one part of the building but unable to be seen from another part of building. We run DHCP across our network and I have been advised that there isn't a LAN issue as I can ping the server from point of access but I cannot see the server when I open filemaker and try the remote access button any ideas?

Hi, I am the new one and also quite new to FM. I will support about 100 FM-Server installations. Most run very well but some, the bigger ones, complain about long responstimes. One is with 30 Clients. And it lasts about 1 minute (50 to 70 Secs) to switch from one to another fp5-file to display it. What is a typical or maximum usercount? FM Server is running on W2K-Server 100Mbit Ethernet TCP/IP the clients mostly are XPPro Systems. Hardware is max 3 years old or younger. What could I check? Where are bottlenecks, enhanced by bad parametersettings? Thanks in advance Bogdan

Hi, I've got a FM Server 7.03 Windows XP, on a local network. I would like to access it, from outside, with a simple and secure solution. I've made some tests with Hamachi (VPN peer to peer) on 2 simples PC and simple FM7. It works great. My question is is it possible, or reasonable, to install Hamachi on the PC runing the FM Server ? Or the rule is really to not install any other software on the server ? What do you think ?

I am swimming deeper into the Server 8.5 waters and am having some encouraging results. My solution is hosted on server 8.5 in my production facility on a very zippy Windows XP machine. The only real problem I am having is that when inputting orders on my remote client at my retail store, it is a little sluggish. My thought is to have a local file at the store with which the rep can do the order input, then import the records to the main table at the host. My question is how would Server react if for instance someone on the network at the production facility was inputting an order, and the rep at the store was to initiate the import into the same table? Would the store b…

Hi! We're a small company that's plannning on expanding from 4 users to maybe 8 or 9. We'll be working from different locations (cities) here in Sweden. The database consists of some 4.000 posts (just text, no media). We're 100% Mac-based. What I do know is that we'll need a static IP, but we're unsure what's suitable for us - will an Xserve, hosted by an internet provider, be overkill, or is it possible to make it work by using a fairly new, dedicated computer and a service like no-ip.com or dyn.org? Will that be reliable? Any suggestions are welcome! regards Anders

I connect to FileMaker from a remote location. Occasionally (once a day on average), the connection is lost. If I attempt to reconnect immediately, I get a Key Conflict error, and it says something along the lines of "this key is in use by <>". I have to wait a few minutes for the server to realize the original connection was lost. Why can't it figure out that I'm connecting from the same computer?? Any way to force it to check? I'm thinking of getting a 10seat license to replace my individual copies. Would that solve my problem (as I assume there's just 1 key that allows 10 connections?).

We are running a small database using FMPRO 8 for Mac OS X on a host machine and sharing it. Scripts that I've created will not work when I log into the database remotely because the remote side is looking for a database file that the script references. How do I get around this? It's as if the remote entry wants to know where reference files are locally. The script should work know matter where I log in from. Printing the barcodes has the same problem. The script I have to print barcodes (with our dymo) will only work from the machine the database is hosted on. What am I missing?

I just upgraded our server from FMS 7 to 8, and our clients from 7 to 8.5. A problem that has shown up is that when we try to go to Script Maker on our Companies database, it is greyed out. Now I tried opening the non-hosted Companies database file, and it seems to be functioning perfectly fine. However, when I copy this file into the hosted files folder, and host it from the server, when I try to access it I cannot get into Script Maker. There is a login/password associated with the database, but I use the same one in both cases. One thing that might be related is that I had to recover and compact the database in order to get the server to open it. I tried…

I have some databases hosted on Server 5.5v4, MacOS 10.3.9. When you click "Stop Server," it never will stop, just says it will take several minutes, but never finishes. Rather than force quit, I restart the Mac (from the menu), but when it comes back, it says the DB's are damaged, even to open them in FM 6.0v4. I always recovered, then imported into a good clone, not using a recovered database. I have formatted the hard drive, installed a new 10.3, upgraded it to 10.3.9, installed a fresh Server, upgraded it to v4, problem persists. Any ideas???

Hello, Here is the situation: we do have FM server where the database is hosted and where data maintenance is done. Some of our locations have poor bandwidth so access is terrible. They are getting a copy of the database everynight and they are accessing the data from their local file server (a day late, but this application does not need to be real-time). Now, comes the issue of accessing the files on the file server. I recently installed OS X Server 10.4 on a G4 933Mhz. 1GB RAM machine, brought it to 10.4.8, installed FMS8v2 and Web publishing. Downloaded 8.0v4 fms & fmsweb updaters. After this, I cannot connect to the server with FMS Admin: "Connection Failure". Could not connect to FileMaker Server "(localhost)" (127.0.0.1)" .... until reboot. Hi guys A client is using FMS on Windows (not sure of the OS but it is Server of some sort). I only use Windows XP for testing and have not come across the '_MACOSX' folder in the Databases list before. What is this folder, why does it appear and why are all files closed? (screen grab attached). The error log says "Database ._WI_IF.fp7 could not be opened: not a FileMaker Pro database." They also have an issue with a file not opening, but a compacted copy seems to work ok (I've told them not to use a recovered file!) Thanks in advance for any help.

We still use FM 5.5 with our clients, hey if it works.... I just did an upgrade for a client from 4.x to 5.5 because they just went from older iMacs to the snazzy cool pre-intel iMacs. I upgraded them to 5.5 on the workstations (10.4.8?) and server (which is still running 9.2). The problem: They keep getting dumped. The workstations keep getting dropped from the server. When it happened (while I was on-site) I thought that the workstation had gone to sleep and dropped the connection. We went through and set so that the hard drive does not sleep and the TCP/IP connection doesn't drop. I heard that this may be an issue with some versions of tiger. If this is…

Some issues with OS X 10.4.8 are being reported, and I'm wondering if these affect FileMaker? 1. 4D has found a serious calculation bug: http://fmforums.com/forum/showtopic.php?fid/144/tid/181094 2. Folks are reporting other calculation issues. Since 10.4.8 supposedly "Improves the accuracy of Rosetta numerics and addresses Altivec translation issues on Intel-based Macs." it's plausible that something has indeed changed. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304200 Is FileMaker affected? Anyone out there have a self-auditing solution that would catch any math changes?

We have been using Filemaker Server to run several databases, including a set of 5 relational files. Everything ran smoothly from FP7 to FP8 upgrade, including all related DB files. Our server is on a PC (Windows XP I believe, FP8), all clients are Mac OSX (10.4.8) running FP8. I administer the databases using the Server Admin program from my Mac. Recently, I needed to add another related database.
