We are experiencing a problem that is becoming a real pain and it seems like one I should understand but I really don't. We use an FM9 database to create and email PDF files all day long. We've always had a moving target. By that I mean that the outline somehow seems to shift around. We've tried rebooting, closing and reopening filemaker and to some degree it has helped. Now, however, Filemaker seems to be changing the available size of our layouts such that our fields cannot even fit on a page that they fit on all last year just fine. Greetings, I have an issue I need help in resolving using a Zebra 2844 printer wasting labels. I'm printing labels with 5 lines of text on a "two up" label, i.e. two labels across. My page setup is all correct, the right label is selected, preview looks fine as I step through the records. Problem is during printing, the first label prints okay. The second label prints one line low, the third label is skipped, then thereafter everything prints okay. My work-around has been to add four dummy records at the top because I know the third label pair and beyond will be okay. My custom layout is for a tape jacket for Mini-DV tape. This is not a label. The size of this layout is about 2x3 inches. I am new at this whole FMPro and searched the forms quickly but found nothing about printing multiple entries on the same 8.5x11 piece of paper. Is there a way to do this? I only need one copy of each entry, but do not want to waste all that paper if there is a better way of doing this. Some times I will have multiple entries that need to print off at a time and other times just one. Thanks

There used to be a third-party product that allowed you to "easily" choose which place on a label layout you could start printing from. SO, instead of wasting a page of labels, you could choose to start from column 2, row 4. I've looked in this forum. No posts on this topic, that I could find. We're in the process of upgrading from 4.0 to 9. During our testing phase, we've found that we are unable to print anything to tray 1 (our envelope or manual feed of our HP LJ 4050 printer). The document prints to either the tray we select manually (every one but 1) or the default when we select tray 1. We've tried choosing both Tray 1 options offered. This is a problem with FM 9 only, no other programs. Any ideas of why this could be happening and what can we do??

Hello I am using FMPro 8.5 here at work. We have 4 pcs with it on it and one acts as the server. On that PC the default printer is our Xerox. On my pc the default printer is my HP. In the past when I went to print, it ALWAYS sent the print job to my HP unless i specified a different printer. However, now, it always sends to the Xerox first. Every morning I must go into printer setup within FM and choose my HP printer. After I do that it will always print to my HP until I reboot or close and reopen FM then I must set it again. Its been driving me crazy tryin to figure out why in the world I cant set my pc to use my HP and ALWAYS use my hp regardless of a reboot …

Hi Everyone, We are trying to determine what options are available for using FileMaker Server 9 as a data source for a MS Word merge on a Mac? Direct connect to a FM v7 and higher file is not possible. We have attempted to export an Excel file which showed "AutoFormat field" and no data. And we were unable to connect via ODBC even though MS Word on a Win machine could access the same data source just fine. In the back of my mind I am starting to recall that this may not be possible on a Mac. Are there any options? Thanks, Paul

I have written an application in FMP. Now I want to use the email feature of the FMP. When I use "Open URL" everything works, only problem is "Open URL" cannot accept more than 2047 characters. And I have over 3000 characters when I build my mail list. Now I am thinking of using the "Send Mail" function. Problem that I am having with this is when I enter more than one email which has been delimited by (:, it always sends the mail to the last contact person in the list. It ignores all other email ids. Does any one know how to fix this? Any help is greatly appreciated.

For some reason, when I am in certain layouts and try to print, instead of printing the current record in the layout, it prints out the names of the fields in some other layout. They aren't even formatted for that layout, it is just a list of the field names, field types, and formula/entry option. Does anyone know what's up? Note that we are using FM 6 on a mac. Hi All, I'm having a printing issue I'm hoping you can help me with. Two database users had a problem today printing a report...the report prints out all of the fields, however one large text field only prints half of the field (horizontally). In other words, it cuts of the text in the middle of each sentence in the field at about 1/2 way in the middle of the page. It is only on one field, the rest of the report prints normally across the whole page. They told me that it happens when they print out the report for the first time & they have not altered the font. Hi All - I am just wondering if anyone knows a method for automating the printing from FileMaker 8/9 to a PostScript file on Windows. The only method I know of is to add a Printer that prints to a File and to use a PostScript printer driver. This actually works except that it requires the user to enter a filename for the PostScript file and doesn't allow for specifying where to put the file. Hello, I have a database of tracked product history that I'm trying to make printable. For some reason, the printing of this specific file is not working properly. I'm printing on a Xerox printer with multiple paper sizes and such and despite the fact that I've done everything I can think of to ensure that I'm telling FileMaker to print on 8.55"x11" (checking that print setup contains the proper page size both before and after printing), it prints on a different page size, 11"x16", which I don't enjoy wasting. I have a couple of medium-sized FMP projects coming up, for which I need to be able to quote a price (or at least some kind of pricing structure). I would like a bit of advice on how to approach this, because projects are often open-ended in that there are always improvements that can be made, and also the time I expect to spend isn't quantifiable (not an FMPRO expert yet!). Quoting a fixed price could either shock the client (if I price too high in ensuring it is profitable) or ruin me (where I spend heaps more time that planned for in my [low] pricing). Do you work on a time-on-project basis? Or how do you deal with this issue?

I am unable to get the Autoresize feature working. I have a layout where all objects have the anchor set to top left align and when I resize a layout in Browse or Preview mode the behaivior is no different than 8.5, the window just covers/exposes the objects regardless of window size and no objects are resized or moved. What am I missing?

I have a report with summary billing info that uses two sub summaries and one trailing Grand summary. I've put all the Bill-to and bill from info as well as descriptive text in a header. If I try to put it in a body section it repeats for every summary record. The problem is that I've specified everything on the layout to slide based on all above and to also reduce the size of the enclosing part. But when I preview, the header has not reduced in size and leaves a big gap in the middle of the invoice. Whatdayathink?

Can anyone help me get better graphics out of FMv8? I am using a 300dpi TIFF as a background to an invoice database (as headed info etc) and whenever I print or pdf from filemaker to be able to email invoices the qulity of the TIFF background is very poor - possibly 72DPI? Any help? I have tried using JPEGs, PDFs and EPSFs as backrounds but still very poor quality output. I am importing the picture via the Insert / Picture menu... Any help would be good..... Crispian

Can anyone help me figure out how to print running page numbers dynamically? Here's the situation. I want the page numbers at the bottom or each page to display the current page and total page. The trick is, I always have a dynamic number of records to print, as well as a dynamic number of pages per record, and I want to restart the page numbers to '1' with each new occurence of a new record. For example, record one may have four pages, in which case I want the footer to display 'Page 1 of 4', 'Page 2 of 4', etc. Record two may have 5 pages. Printing multiple records of a find result was easy : These were my steps go to layout ... sort records print setup print : with option records being browsed Today I added language options. Say one customer could be FR and an other UK Based on the language the invitation letter is different. How to impliment this in my printing script ? Taking into account that is a found set. I have a table that used to print as a single page on my previous printer (Epson 6600). I can select the same fields but all that prints now on my HP 4mv is the first half of all the fields. I do not know how to get the remaining ones to print. After selecting them in the file/define database/fields dialog, there seems not to be a way to save the selection; pressing PRINT reverts to the first group of fields. I guess FM does not have the neat "fit to page" feature of Excel spreadsheets. If this is addressed in the HELP file for FM7, I have not been able to find it. It occurs to me that a page break might work, but I really need to find the way to select the desire…

Hey all, We have an orders db that handles all information on an order. There are layouts for the printouts such as production and shipping which has the shipping address and the line items. Due to changes in procedures, we now have a portal of special shipping instructions for special customers. This is a table related to the company of a contact. What is the best practice for displaying a portal of shipping instructions on a printout? I have limited space to work with, not sure what way is best to ensure that most or all notes are printed to ensure our shipping guys don't forget?

Hi I have a layout with header,1 sub summary part, body, 1 sub summry part, trailing grand summary and a footer. Trailing Grand Summary diplays a portal. The fields in the portal are defiend to "Slide Up "All Above" and also "reduce the size of the enclosed part" but when I view in Preview mode, the fields do not slide up which gives a big gap in between records in the portal. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I have used the web viewer to show various files "attached" to a record. The user would like to print the main document (record) as well as all its attached files, as a package. Is there a way to print the content of the web viewer? Or maybe using the web viewer is not the way to go: can FileMaker be used to launch the printing of non-FileMaker files (like PDF or Word or simple images like JPEG)? I noticed that for a PDF, the web viewer has a print icon available, but not for Word... Ideally I would like the user not to have to open each document to see if it can be printed... Hi there, For some reason when I view my layout in preview mode a large blank space appears under my header. I have a header, three subsummary parts and then the body. Each part is set to just the size of the field, yet when I switch to the preview mode a large space appears between the header and the first subsummary part. I have played around with the sliding, etc...but it makes no difference. I have even created a brand new layout, adding each part over again and then when I am done and view in preview, there is that stupid blank space again! Oh, and I should note that on the second page and pages thereafter, it disappears. Any ideas??

I have a layout which looks ok in preview mode, but when printed, the font size has increased by about 50% and as a result the report does not fit on the page. Font used is verdana 10 point plain. Printer is a HP laser jet. Ideas anyone ? Thanks.

I've created a school database which produces student reports; however, not all the subjects which a student studies use the same layout, which makes printing an entire set of reports for a single student cumbersome. So far, we've printed all the reports for subject X then for Subject Y and collated them all together. This is clearly a pain. Is there a simple way/script which will let me print all the reports collated together for a single pupil (or even better, all pupils) in one operation?

This just started about a week ago. When anyone starts their account and opens Filemaker, then prints something, their documents all print at 50% unless they go to page setup first. And they, being the spoiled workers they are, can't remember how to go to page setup and change it to 100%. Frankly, I don't want to either, and know there has to be a simple reason why this suddenly started happening. It happens on all the computers. Why aren't they automatically printing 100%? I need to print some records on both sides of the paper and I need to manually turn over the paper. So what I think I need to be able to do is print all of the odd number records, and then turn the paper over and print the even numbered records. Does anyone know if this is possible or do you have any suggestions as to how to do it? One of our users here is complaining that when they try and print labels for all records being browsed it's only printing every other label. The funny thing is I cannot reproduce this problem. When I print the same set of records they're trying I get them all. I did stumble across a forum from a google search where a guy using FM 5.0 mentioned that if you try and print records being browsed it will print every other record but then he doesn't say anything about a fix...just that you should avoid trying it. I'm making a script that among other things, adds page numbers. When I run the [print] command, it tries to print the whole record instead of the specific page on I'm, when I need to print on a page-by-page basis to get the page numbers to work out. I am not sure if this is possible but I am trying to achieve the layout in the Sample Invoice PDF attached. I have been trying to use the "Only Directly Above" sliding option but am not able to get my line items to move beyond the bottom of the text that sits on the left-hand side. I have put the Logo and the yellow text at the top into a Header part and then placed 5 leading sub summary parts below that ... one each for the blocks of text running down the left hand side plus the label strap lines that precede each block of line items. Within a script, how do I create a "cancel" button/option in the status area while previewing a report? I do see the "continue" button/option there as a result of the Enter Preview Mode (paused) script step. I want the user to be able to preview the document and print, or preview the document and continue (taking them back to the layout where the script originated), or preview and cancel (stay on same layout in browse mode) where I have a navigation button to a different layout than the original. : I have a database with multiple layers of data.. ie. one goal(1), three objectives(1.1), four activities(1.1.1) (the records are at the activity level) so there are many records with the same goal and objectives. For one report I just wanted to see Goals and Objectives so I ran a script that pulled all the records sorted them and then Omited the duplicates at the objective level! Works great BUT it drops say 40 records down to 13. Now I need to do a report that gets a running total of the financial information for each objective BUT the financial data relate to the activity. I recently created a form letter layout. I used the merge field function for part of the letter and imported our company logo. In the browse & preview mode the letter looks excatly like I want it. Then when I print, the fonts get bigger, and the letter falls off the page. In addition to that the screen in browse mode now changes in that the cursor grows to twice it size, and the screen now looks like what just printed. I have some buttons to the left side of the screen and the text and line spacing on them changes. Sorry if this sounds way to basic. TextFont ( text ; fontName ) The font Helvetica Neue is what I need to use, now the strange thing.. the Black Condensed and the Bold Condensed still work. The others don't. The used to but they don't any more. Who knows why and what should I try. Have de-and re-installed. Using Fontbook. Obviously using Mac and FM8 Adv.

In my contact db I have a report layout. To put together the set to be printed I create the wanted set, then I go to the report layout preview and it shows the found set as a list. perfect. but when I print this report, it prints the list layout with only one single record on it and a list with only one record is quite a short list.... Why do records in Filemaker 8 (and 7 and 6) print in light gray instead of black when using HP 4MV from a Mac (OS X 10.4.6)? I've tried switching from Times New Roman to New York and then to Arial, but no difference. I'm trying to print a 1-page letter. The letter prints out okay in normal black on the 4MV when using other programs, such as MS Word. But in Filemaker it prints out light gray. What's also strange is that at times I've been able to print records in black using my 4MV. But at other times (like right now!), it only prints light gray. I tried restarting my Mac to see if it made a difference, but it didn't. thanks for any help, Peter

I have a script that prints out the record that is displayed, everything OK there. The problema I am having is with the Enter Preview Mode. The record that is displayed in the Preview Mode is the first record of the found set and not the record that is printed. How can I get the Enter Preview Mode, or change the script to display the record that is going to be printed.

Hi, I've created a report that prints two columns with a sub-summary header at the top. It won't print that sub-summary elsewhere unless coincidentally, it's forced because of the change caused by the sort parameter. I'm trying to set up a contact list with the sub-summary sorting by state and printing that at the top of each page, both columns, regardless if it's come to a new state. I tried setting up a header row, which printed the info I need, but doesn't keep the state sub summary header correctly. Here are 2 pictures, currently just has the sub summary field only. FM 8.5 consistently prints with awkward line breaks, particularly with graphics. Lines are chopped in half, graphics span pages. I assumed that everyone on this forum would have this problem but don't se many complaints of this type. These are pretty basic reports. They use sliding. All text left justified, straight fonts.

I am used to working with MS Access and can put together a report with fields that grow as necessary easily. However, working with FileMaker 8's "sliding" has me stumped. I want to make a report from a student database that includes the students name, status and comments. The comments field can have a lot of data or very little to none. I've tried numerous combinations of the sliding up options and nothing works. The only way I can see all the text in the comments field is to enlarge the field object. Any help would be appreciated!!!

I have several tables (projects, clients, tools, steps, materials) that are all related, and my input layout works great. First-time poster; hope it makes sense. I should know this, but it's been several years since I've worked under FM's hood..... I have a TO DO file and a PLANNER file. When the PLANNER shows a date in a field, a portal in this file reflects a list of that date's To Do list from its relationship with the TO DO file. I have a portal on my layout which has these fields: Date / Time / Badge # / Room / Print / (plus a couple of other fields) The “Print” filed is either a Yes or No and is the field that I am attempting to hinge my printing request on. I was thinking of purchasing a label printer. That way whenever I need a single label I don't have to put in a whole sheet of thirty labels. Does anyone know if FM7 can easily use a single label printer and if yes, can anyone recommend the best one? Mike

Hi, I am venturing into label printing and have a quick question. I have searched but cant find anything to do what I need. What I want is to be able to print the same data on (lets say 10) labels but have the labels sequentially numbered. So, lets say I need to print out 10 duplicate labels for John Doe, containing his name and address and the date printed…I would like each label to carry a different label number 1,2,3,4 etc. And the next time I may only need two for John Doe so they would need to print numbered 1 and 2. Can this be done with a script or calc? Thanks for your help, James

I'm fairly new to FM and have a database with addresses (only 1 table) listing addresses such as: House Apt 44 1 44 2 44 3 However, when I print I only want to see house # (44) on first record (Apt. 1) I assume I need to handle this in layout, but now sure how. Thanks.

I was using Ms Sqlserver, Oracle, MySql and Ms Access. Now I need to use FM Pro 8.5 but i have not found something like DDL in FM Pro. I made a database for church, they have used it about 2 years without any problem. Then the problem started last week. When they print some report, the computer turn off. I try to print from other computers, the same problems occur. They have on server with fms 7 and 3 coputers installed fmp 7. The printer(hp 1300) is connected with one computer and shared. I did recover the file procedure and I do what I can. What cause the printing problem? Please, let me know.

I have a database that has a few layouts. Right now I have a button with a script attached to it that allows a copy of three of the layouts to print to one printer. I would like to change the script and have one of the layouts print to a second printer. I am trying to automate the process as much as possible without having to choose the printer or create two buttons. Is that possible? If so, How? Thanks, Mark

I have a problem with 1 FileMaker file. When we print a record we enter for example in the pages section pages 320 to 320. It should print record 320 but it prints record 160 which is exactly half way. It does this for every record if we enter 400 it prints record 200. If we select the record and choose to print current record and select page 1 to 1 instead of records being browsed then it prints the correct record. But whenever we print using the records being browsed method it seems to cut the number in half and print that record. Any ideas on why it would do this the file only has 631 records and we have other files with thousands more than that and t…

We are a commercial printing company who has been looking into a web to print solution. We have contacted companies such as Avanti and Power Quotes which offer full systems and a large cost. What I want to be able to do is offer to my clients an oppurtunity to do their own typesetting through their web browser on standardized products such as stationery/business forms/catalogs. I run a large golf competition for boys and girls. Their details are entered on a form and I print out labels for the score cards on to 65 to a sheet labels. Even though I enter hyphenated names like Sarah-Jane with capitals, the label reproduces it as Sarah-jane, with the second name not capitalised. Today, I noticed one boy who likes to be known by his initials "TJ" was printed out as "Tj"., Is there a way to solve this without leaving extra spaces between the letters and the hyphen? Any advice gratefully received.

Hi everyone, When trying to print in FileMaker, all fields print blank. This is appearing in the print preview as well, not just the hard copy. All non-field objects, like text and graphics, are printing fine. But any data from the database is not showing. This is happening for all fields in all layouts, not just one. The print and print preview only give one page, not as many pages as there are records in the find. I was going through old backups of the database, and this problem goes back about a week---olded backups don't have the problem. I wrote an FMP app with reports on my Windows workstation in the US and a customer is using the app in the UK. When they go to print the Paper Size defaults to "Letter" which is what is on my desktop but their printer is configured to default to "A4" (though their printer also supports "Letter"). Right now I have told them they have to chagne it from "Letter" to "A4" every print job but I does anyone know a way around this?

My reports have to be on legal size paper. I can size the fields on my report to legal size and let them shrink up, but I can't use Page Setup in the layout mode to set the printer up for legal paper. When I set it to legal, it reverts to letter size. How do I set up legal size printing.

Does anyone know of a way to get simple printouts of defined tables and scripts? By simple, I mean a line-by-line listings, not the interpreted versions you get when you select the ScriptMaker Print option, for example. I've used FileMaker for over a year now and this has been a major point of frustration. If there is no direct way, are scripts stored anywhere that they can be externally referenced? Or if the script Print output is vectored into a text file, is there a utility to parse the file and reconstruct the original lines? Hi, I develop using a Mac but have built a network solution for a Windows client. All was working fine but since they update FM clients from 8 to 8.5 all clients on the network only can print to one printer on the network, no matter what printer you choose in the Print dialogue. It does not make a difference what default printer you choose, and even making a new single user database on one of the clients where you select Print from the File menu only wants to print to one printer... Hi, I want to create a stationary for the users of my database. I want it to have a border around the page framing each page. The problem is that many of the things they print out have a multi page field on them. I want each page to have a border around the text. I got a problem. I have a layout with 5 pages below each other. There is a header, wich shall be printed on every pages. The other content is placed in the body. Page 1 is some text+portals, which will always be printed. Page 2 is a text field, which shall only be printed if the content is not empty. Page 3 - 5 has a container field on each. Those pages shall only be printed, if the container fields is not empty to avoid empty pages. I can't make that happen now. I have tried with sliding and reduce part, but that creates a new problem. :confused: I am having a problem with printer settings resetting, after I have specified them within a script, even when the button function is set to "exit previous script" before executing. Is this a bug in 8.5? I have tried using the both the Print Setup and Print script steps and both. The only way I was able to somewhat work around the problem was to create a new script to run three separate scripts within it. I am evaluating FM as the database for our non-profit group (I am not a programmer so not too many scripts please!) I want to be able to print a 40 - 48 page booklet (letter sized, landscape orientation) with 4 columns accross the 2 page spread. The first 6-8 pages are group rules and a listing of officers, the remainding pages list 270 active members, and finally ~30 inactive members (who can reactivate). I have FM 8.5, Office 2003 and MS Publisher on my PC. Hi, I'm new to FMP and I have a few questions about printing labels. 1. What label printer works well with FMP and is of good value? You know, the kind that can print one label at a time? Hi all When arranging layouts on my Mac, I make sure that the objects I don't want in the print (couple of buttons) are outside the print area. When I look at the layout on the PC, the buttons on the right impinge on the print area. Also slightly shortens the bottom page border so I end up pushing the print onto 2 pages. I've noticed this for A4 and DL envelope (1/3 of A4 page). Yes, different printer drivers I admit but A4 should be A4 right? Am I missing something? Phil

When printing a found set, the first few pages (usually the first 4 to 8 records) print as expected, but the remaining 10 pages or so are coming out blank. Omitting the correctly printed records from the found set and printing again eventually leaves me with the desired result, but I thought computers were meant to simplify, speed up and make me look smart? If I print to file (PDF) all records are there and the whole document prints at once without a problem. Any tips?

I have a data entry layout with a field that contains 10 checkboxes and I have another layout for printing. However, I don't want the print layout to actually print checked boxes, so I change the format to edit box. But... ... each checked box, when switched to edit box will print on a separate vertical line as in checkbox1 checkbox2 checkbox3, etc. This really limits my layout set up. I would rather the checkbox data print horizontally as in checkbox1, checkbox2, checkbox3, etc. Is this possible?

Greetings Fellow FileMakers, I have any number of pages (records) printing (let's say 10). The first couple print fine...THEN the next page shifts down a couple of lines and prints everything (nothing missing) a couple lines lower on the whole page...THEN back to normal. It appears random...any thoughts as to what is causing this? Sometimes I am printing multple records per page, othertimes I am printing one. There are no elements off the layout of a single page. Hi, Is there a way to print a report using IWP? I created a nifty little report and short script that finds the records. Yet when I run the script using Instant Web Publishing, the report just hangs on the last page (it can be 2-5 pages long depending on how many records are found). I thought about creating a PDF when the client logs in, however the create PDF script step doesn't work for web clients.

We have a mixed system (Mac, PC, Win 2000, XP, FM 7, 8.5...). I have developed the files in 8.5, proofed them on the computer which will print them (to the printer which will print them) which is FM 7.03. The problem is, I cannot get the page setup to hold. On a thermo Labeller (Zebra Z4000), it will flip the print job. I reset the page setup on the file and in the script (and even as the default for the machine) and it will work once, then go back to what it was before. Laser printer set for duplex, 2 pages per sheet will revert to one page per sheet (still duplexed). The same settings are used in FM6 (currently running on the same machine)and they hold fine. Does …

Can someone help me understand this please? Attached is a very simple DB. When I run the report to items are combined and reported as 1 in the report. 2881 and 2881M Are completely different "parts" but when I run the report it combines them. A very quick review of the data will clearly show the problem. If I have to fake this and rename 2881M I am going to look like an idiot but I can't figure out how to get around this.
