I was involved in updating a legacy FM 6 DB w/ a FM Server 5.5 solution. I believe I was told by FM that you cannot open the files hosted by FM 5.5 w/FM 6 client on the same machine at the same time -- it causes it to crash and creates design corruption; there is usually no data loss. When the update was deployed we intialized the Mac for the server, did all the Mac OSX updates and installed FM 5.5 along with the latest updaters from FM. The design seemed be stable. This apperent "no-no" happened once initially about 4-5 weeks after the install and we saw the DB go down and need to be recovered. When this happened we also re-installed FM 5.5 and we not a…

A new problem has cropped up after converting to FMP 8.03. Instead of properly wrapping, text in a field is overrunning the right border of the field and becoming hidden. This only happens for a word or two, then wrapping continues properly. If I use the arrow key to move thru the text, the cursor hovers at the right edge as I go thru the hidden portion of the text, then moves to the next line. If I hit "Enter", the hidden text jumps to the next line. If I hit backspace, the wrapping fixes itself... until I exit the field. Then, it jumps back up a line and becomes hidden again. Any thoughts?

Hi, I recently converted a databease created in FM6 to FM8. Its new, so only has a handful of records (sample data only). I converted it to FM8 and it seems to run slower. I can see the records being "painted" on the sceen. My question is whether this is because this database was converted from FM6, or would it be the same if the database was created from scratch using FM8? tks

Hi, I'm working on an good old FM 5.5. I made a new button in Photoshop and pasted it in. It shows fine on my computer but it is actully an OLE object. THe FM docs say to use Edit > Object > Links and break the connection there. When i go to this dialog it is empty. I'm all out of ideas. Pasting and Coping it from Paint etc doesnt work either, it always whats the be an OLE object.

I was writing an application to calculate Stableford golf scores. I imported some fields from a layout in another database, and as soon as I went back to browse mode, I got a error saying that the file is damaged, and that the access priveleges have been damaged or possibly tampered with. (I never set any particular priveleges for the file). Recovery did not work, the recovered file has the same problem. Help please! rounds_file.zip

I'm in the process of updating approx. 40 terminals to v8.03. I've had no problems with all but one. On this particular one, I had missed the v8.02 patch. Whenever I double click on the "setup" icon to apply it, I get an InstallShield dialogue box which says: Command line parameters: /L language ID /S Hide initialization dialogue. For silent mode use: /S /v/qn. /V parameters to MsiExec.exe /UA /UW /UM (see attached) This has not happened on any other machine, and I have done about 25 so far. Hello Everyone! I am having issues using Loops on my program. It turns my program really slow. I will place some numbers to make sure it is slow and it is not just me being impatient. In a sample with 32 Students that answer to 54 questions, therefore the table TEST_RESULT has 1728 records (32 x 54). The scripts take roughly an average 35 seconds to execute. The Loops are either by student (32 times) or by questions (54 times) and sometimes there is another variable involved. I tried using Freeze Window but sometimes it is still possible to see the scrollbar flicking. Are there any other suggestions to make my program run faster? Some of …

I am working on a layout with 2 portals on it. When I toggle from layout mode to browse mode and vice versa, the screen rewrites itself 2 and sometimes 3 times. Is there anything I can do to stop this? note: I have noticed that the toolbar icon groups changing from 1-3 rows might be connected to this. Thanks

Hello everybody. I have a database on wich I do all my invoices, manage clients, purchase orders, etc. Last night I was working on it and suddenly one of the databases got corrupted, I have since then tried to recover the file without any luck. It starts with the recovering process and then it just stops at step 6 of 16, I leaved the recovering process all night without success. I have a Mac running OS 10.4.6 with FileMaker Pro Advanced 8.0v3. The file is password protected, but I don't think it is necessary for the recovering process, if you need it I'll give it to you. Over the weekend we upgraded from 6 to 8 v3. The transition went smoothly but I have encountered a small, yet odd problem. I have one client machine that is being disconnected after being idle for short time period (about 10 min). I’ve let other clients remain idle and encounter no connection problems. There are no settings on the server side that I can see that may be the culprit. Any ideas?

One of my main files will no longer open. At first the file wouldn't open, then it would quit the application if I tried to open that file. Now my filemaker 5.5 crashes if I try to open at all. I've tried rebuilding the file, recovering the file, compressing the file. For the final crowing disaster FileMaker gave me the advice to clean my old file and preferences. Great except I bought my last 2 versions with updates and it cannot find the file, won't download or accept my previous install code. Filemaker will only supply documentation on the latest and previous versions.... All this started after I downloaded the 30 day trial of fmp 8 Can anyone help?

I am having a problem with FM 8 Advanced that makes it essentially unusable for me. Often a dialogue box or window pops up or becomes a completely blank white space when I transition from one thing to another involving a window adjustment. For example, if I export records, after the export, the space on the screen where the export window was is just a pure blank white space. I'm using a mac running os x.4.2. I'm wondering if it's worth experimenting to try and track the problem down, or if others have seen this problem. It seems _possible_ that it's related to CodeTek Virtual desktop, but I haven't had such a problem with any other application.

Hey folks, I've run a few searches and haven't found this error anywhere. I'm trying to upgrade a full retail install (that works just fine) of FMP 7 to FMP 8, but keep getting the following error right after launching the installer... "You cannot install or uninstall FileMaker on this version of Windows. Please refer to the system requirements in the installation instructions for more information." This machine fully complies with the requirements. It's running WinXP SP 2 (fully patched) and the hardware surpasses the system requirements by far. I'm positive I'm using the correct Upgrade product (says so on the box and back of the paper CD sleeve).…

Hi, I am having a problem that just started today. I am trying to create a runtime solution from one file and after it starts to copy my file, the whole program just shuts down. Has anyone had this happen? I have been creating runtime solutions with 8 recently for other projects, and it was working fine until today...thought maybe my file was corrupt or something...but that doesn't seem to be the issue. Simple problem baffling me. Have a file with 20 layouts. I have a field called "View all layout names" and it is a calculated field which uses the LAYOUTNAMES(fieldname) function. It is blank and is not showing the layoutnames. I have tried every combination of indexing (on, minimal, all), I just can't get it to carry out an index and display the layout names. This was originally a FM6 file. When I create a small test file from scratch in FM8 the layout names do appear. Yet when I do the same in my other file....blank field. Is there any way of forcing an index to be made of the layout names ? I have tried deleting the field and re-defining it, to no avail. Am I…

I have sn FM solution that we use in our small business on a small LAN w/ 7 clients served by FM server 5.5. The solution has several window and rather than use the navigation buttons that are there, some of the users are physically moving the windows out of their way to view a window behind it. This is very annoying if they are using a machine that is for public use and I am curious if there is a plug in or script that might stop a user from moving windows and forcing them to use the navigation buttons. hello Due to a flaw in the design of a database - one field I never ever expected people to use to search in - I had to index that particular field (being the only NOT indexed field) The table contains some 4 million recprds. Indexing that one field took me about 3 days, as in 72 hours. YET About 1 hour short of finishing - yup Murphy struck: MAC OS X 10.4.6 totally froze. Corrupted the filesystem of one of my hard disks so that took another two days to get restored again. I recently purchased FileMaker Pro Advanced to see if I could rewrite my existing (Helix Rade) database on this product. I have no real computer education so I'm struggling along with the help of a Missing Manual book. I have a script which archives records into an archive file, that has stopped working since my client upgraded from FMS7 to FMS8. It does a find, to isolate the record to be archived, and then performs an import script in the archive file, to import the found set from the original file. It then deletes the original record. This is then repeated many times, for each of the related tables. The records are now being deleted, but not archived. Has anyone any ideas? Hi all I have just upgraded my entire network to work on FM8. It is now 10 pc's: Win XP, 1.8 GHz, 512 MB ram + 3 eMac's: OSX 700MHz processors,384 MB memory and a G4 server as the FM8 server. the pc's are running much faster than the macs.. I thought it would be the other way round.. is it the ram? what is the most determining factor in the speed of a guest on FM8??

Version 8 added the ability to return a value (script parameter) when a script exits. If the script is a top-level script, initiated by clicking a button, and the script is passed 3 fields as a script parameter, does anyone know how to return those 3 values into the passed fields? Clearly, if the script were called by another script, the other script could decode the results. But what if its the only script? This situation comes up all the time for me, and my solution to it is clunky: pass the script a parameter that tells the script which of a dozen relationships the results apply to. Steve

ok I just went and tried to make a login/password for my fmp8 file and now I cannot access it! I didn't realize I needed to create an account to log in with before I assign a username and password. I discovered this after attempting to repeat what I did to lock myself out and locked myself out of another temp file. What I did was go to "File" then "File Options". I gave my file a username and a password and clicked ok. Filemaker then tells me "This file will be opened automatically using the specified account. To use a different account, hold down the Option key (Mac OS) or Shifrt key (Windows) while opening the file." I go to open the file …

I am using Filemaker Pro V 8 and I am very new to it. When I go into Define database and then relationships and click on one of the tables I nearly always loose the screen at least it goes white if I click my mouse and hold down the button it comes back but let it go it dissappears again. Clciking on the OK button and close definitions and going back in gets it back again but the moment I try and manipulate anything I loose it again. I have used disk utility to rebuild all my permissions but that does not help. any suggestions greatly appreciated. thanks Mitch

Can any one tell me why I can't enter Tabs in the Calculation Formula window (Mac OS X 10.4.5, FileMaker 8 Advanced). I thought Option Tab was supposed to insert a tab. I can copy one from another calculation and paste it in. I just can't enter one from the keyboard or via macro.

I would like to know if anyone could tell me where to find the MRU storage location for previous opened files. I went ahead and said not to show any on preferences and then shutdown, ran a very thourough MRU clean with multiple apps, but it appears that FileMaker is not on their lists of MRUs to remove. When I reopened and selected the preference to display again, they reappeared. Some MRU applications are editable and I wanted to know if anyone knew of a way to find these so I could add these. (Note: This is for FM8 that I am trying to accomplish this on)

I do a lot of work in MS Word for one client, and I use FileMaker 7 to manage and check the complex web of files she sends me. My problem is that FileMaker infrequently (every 25 minutes) crashes with a "buffer overrun C++ runtime error" message while I'm working in MS Word (2000). I have no idea what this error denotes (i.e. a problem with Word, Windows, FileMaker, or some combination), but it's only FileMaker that crashes, and it's only while I'm in Word. On restart FileMaker works fine for a while again. There does not appear to be a trigger (perhaps a simple "find" request, but not always). Has anyone seen this? Not sure if this is the best board, but... I've asked my managers if I can become FMP8 certified. They haven't denied me yet (the cost for coursework, etc.), but they haven't exactly embraced it. I was emailed the following: "Besides personal advancement, what advantages does becoming certified gain you?" Can anyone please help me to list the benefits to my management team? I am a mostly Mac guy. I have an FMP 7 solution that has as the default a no-password, limited access account called, "Public." In other words, when you open the file, normally no password dialog window appears. Of course, I also need to get into the file as the administrator from time to time so I need to get to that window to enter my password. On a Mac you can get the Password Dialog Window to show up by holding down the Control key when you open the file. What key do you use on the Windows platform to force the Password Dialog to appear? I went to a client to make a minor modification and discovered that the main file is in poor health. Symptom: I deleted a field definition and it crashed FileMaker. Yep, live served. I went offline, made a copy, compressed the file, and still crashed. Compressed Clone crashed. Experiment: I tried a recover on a copy and it brought back 5 field defs from years ago (when another programmer created this file). I have been using FM Pro 4 for several years for managing direct mail lists for local charities. Suddenly last summer the program began taking up to 3 minutes to open. At first I thought maybe it was time to upgrade to a newer version and I purchased FM Pro 6. But it was also taking 3 or more minutes to open. I take very good care of my computer system, regularly run anti-virus, spyware, and other maintenance software. Also keep system defragged and backed up. Each time I place the cursor in a field, I see the vertical text cursor, but immediately next to it is a blind spot (white space) approximately 50 x 50 pixels. I can type through it, but can't see what I'm typing. If I use the arrow keys the white space does not move with the cursor. I use Windows 2000 and do not have this problem in any of several dozen other programs. Anyone know a solution?

I'm developing on FMP6 Unlimited for a while now, but i had a version belonging to my first employer (with license code), but i now miss the "Web Server Connector" CD in order to serve my solution on multiples domains. Does someone would sell me the original WSC CD, or at least an entire FMP6 Unlimited package, as it's impossible now to find it online (at least a US shop got it , but won't ship to france). Here's the set up . . . Our database has multiple 'buttons' with various scripts attached to each, and there is only one script step in each - which is GTRR Showing only related records matching current record only. The related record and button is being displayed in a portal. Here's the fault . . . Click on the button and the user is taken to the first layout, and to the most recent record on the layout they had visited. Hey all, I'm hoping to get some help with this - I just got the job of maintaining a rather old FMP databse that we are using at work, and while I am pretty well aquainted with RDBMS in general, I'm a complete filemaker novice and this is throwing me for a loop. In a particular report, when switching to preview mode, the system just sort of sits there for sometimes up to 10 minutes and then exits back out to browse mode. It never actually gets to preview. Hey All, I'm just cleaning up my file references from a recent port to FM8. All my files are in two folders, a main folder and a nested folder "support databases". I just cleaned up the main folder file references to all relative references, so calls to files in the main folder, from a file in the main folder, are file:myFile and all calls to the support folder are file:supportdatabases/myFile so far so good. Now I need to clean up the support databases folder. However, I'm not sure how to do a relative file reference UP a folder level? I have a collection of general FileMaker files that I combine to create a specific solution, with a master Welcome file with "links" to the other files. The "links" actually perform a common Activate script in each of the subordinate files. A have been customizing the Welcome file for each specific solution. I thought I could avoid this customization by having the Welcome file perform the Activate on all possible subordinate files by having a single Proxy file stand in for any missing files. I'm sure the trusty fourm adminstrators will put this post into the right forum. I just wanted to express my frustrations and see if anyone else had a simple solution... Problem: I'm going nuts and having fits. Cause: I'm using the new "New Window" feature in some new v8 solutions (as opposed to GoToLayout a la version < 6.) I would like my script to insert a file into a container field. The steps I have are: 1. save the file to c:attachments (the file is from an email attachment, using PC Computing's Outlook manipulator). This step works fine. 2. insert the file I just saved into a container field. no matter what I do, the insert file step comes up with a dialog box. It must not be resolving the path. Although the variable "a_path" is correct. In the filepath dialog I have: filewin:&$a_path where $a_path = c:attachmentsfilename.doc Are there any obvious gotcha's that I should know?

I've read on both macintouch and this forum that FMP v6 works under Rosetta on the Intel Macs, but does anyone know about v5.5? Fortunately, our setup doesn't use any plugins, and the files are shared from a Windows 2000 box acting as a server, even though it's only running regular FMP v5.5 (not Server). The Windows server is the only place that ODBC might be used, as there are some ancient Delphi apps running there that synchronise the FMP data with other dbs.

The "Recovery" command seems to be a hidden or at least not well documented or talked about. My understanding is that Recovery is used to repair corrupted indexes. Is that correct? When using Recovery, does it also pack the tables? What generally causes an index corruption in FM? How can one avoid this (what are some of the "gotchas")? Any tips or suggestions about the Recovery program. I created a Recovery command that a user can run from a shortcut. It recovers all data files. Seems to work fine, but I'm concerned that users get messages that "file is damaged and needs to be recovered". This seems to occur more than I would expect (once a week or so)…

I got filemaker pro 8 advanced about a week ago and I cannot get it to install. I have a powerbook 1.67 ghz w/ osx 10.4.5. I mount the file then start the install everything goes ok, I enter the serial as asked, it accepts the serial then goes to the easy install menu. I then click ok to start the install and it starts. It gets about 25% done then stops without any error message and goes back to the easy install menu. The last file that displays as installing is openssl. It then just becomes a loop. If you click install again it goes to the install and gets about 25% and then goes back to the easy install menu. I think it may be the software, but I tried downloading the t…

Sometimes when I open my database it seems to flicker like the screen is being redrawn several times per second. It drives my eyes nuts. Seems to happen in particular with layouts taht have portals. Sometimes a reboots seems to fix it but it does reoccur. Anyone run into this? Thanks in advance.

The scriptmaker menu is greyed out and any button that uses a script will not work. Also the import menu is greyed out. This behavior started after I reverted to a back up file. I reverted to a back up because every computer crashed when I went to a certain record. (by crashed I mean sat there with a spinning globe of death) After going to the back up the corrupted record was gone and crash problem solved. My temporary solution is to move the file off the server and host without a server. All scripts work ok under those circumstances. I have not yet set up my security so everyone, even guest have full access.

Hello group. As the title indicates, I am a complete newbie to Filemaker Pro. My boss at work purchaed it as a "gift" for me, but now I am expected to learn it and implement it. My question is not so much how to do something, but more of "can Filemaker Pro do this?". We have 4 inventories total. 3 are at different locations. Every week each location submits an Excel spreadsheet with their current on hand count. How can you tell which serial number is a 5 pack license and single license? Do they print it on the actual serial number sticker? We ordered several different types (Advanced Server, 8 Advanced and regular 8 5 user). I had one box sitting on my desk, I know it's not Server and it looks like the regular FileMaker 8, however, we didn't order a single pack we ordered the 5 pack. Any ideas? Thanks...

Hi All. Sometimes when running FMP and your system crashes it leaves you with a corrupted database. When the faults aren't severe you get the "checking for unused blocks" window the next time you try to startup the database. For a file of around 50 GB that will take about one hour so thats pretty much ok. (It takes longer to restore a backup of the file) If the errors are more profound you are prompted to RECOVER the file. Now here is where the sh*t starts. In my notion any databasefile extending about 2-3 GB trying to recover from a crash results in an "unable to recover" message. So far I have circumvened this by keeping some backup copies…

Upgrade to FM 8 Advanced! (Seriously) If you are doing anything of even moderate complexity, I strongly urge you to consider moving to FM 8 Advanced. I've found that the addition of Script Variables and the various Export & Email records as XLS/PDF alone have paid off quickly. Script variables allow you to get rid of a lot of global fields, which can make your overall design much cleaner. I'm not affiliated with FileMaker, in fact I'm usually cursing them, but I do appreciate when a better product comes out, and FM8 Advanced is enough better than FM7, the upgrade cost is really trivial (if you value your time, or sanity).

I've had FMP8 Adv on my Mac PowerBook G4 for probably 6-7 mos. Just last week, I started experiencing some weird issues. My first attempt to launch FMP8 Adv in the morning fails, or rather, cycles forever. When I am finally able to launch and use the program, the performance is PITIFUL. I get the spinning beachball on almost every click/operation I perform. The performance problem applies to local files as well as remote ones. The only notable thing I can think of that may be affecting this is an AppleScript I added to my startup items a couple weeks ago that automatically connects me to my office server... Any other ideas?

I have been developing a solution on PC with FMP 8 Advanced and have recently seen that when i swhitch layout it blinks/flashes more than ever. Previous solutions on PC has also been doing this but not this mutch. It looks like it loads the layout 3-5 times. I wonder if it has anything to do with using tabs? It's realy annoying and ugly and i wonder if i can do something different or this is just the way the PC version handles the graphics? Btw it looks ok/great on mac.

In FileMaker 5 I could use "Open....file name" in a script to open another FileMaker file. In FileMaker 7, when I use "Open file....file name" in a script, I get the desired file, UNLESS the file is already open. How do I prevent this cloning of the file, and just "go to" the file if it is already open? Thanks, Jim

Hi, I am very new to Filemaker, on either platform, but not new to technology. I just got off the phone with a client who is currently using a Filemaker Pro 7 on OSX DB but is leaving to a new job that is Windows-XP based. How can she take her DB to the Windows-XP? Hi! I'm new to filemaker and so far I have created a runtime application with several functions including buttons that open new windows. However, all the windows have the "X" greyed out so I can't seem to close the windows other than creating a custom button to close the window. Is there a way to fix that problem? I am wondering if it is possible in fm 8 to reference a filename based off of data in the database. So you have an id number in the database like 1. I want to reference a file on a shared drive Y: which is a pdf with the filename 1.pdf. The open file command doesn't seem like it is able to do this, it asks for a specific filename. This is on a windows network.

i need to 'get' some data from a FMP6 db and populate it in a FMP8 db. (migration is not an option with FMP6 db) Before i go ahead with my idea of exporting out via script a dbf file from FMP6 db and then impoting this in to my FMP8 db via script i thought i would ask you guys if you can think of a better way of doing it? thanks in advance.

I have a simple script that exports a database as an ascii file. Then I try to use the send mail function to email that file. The exports function works fine but the email is not being sent. I've check the win.ini file and I have added the [MAIL] info (I've cut and pasted from another win2k machine and rebooted the system). It is still not emailing. What should I do next? Tx Yves

Hi, I'm new to this forum, just found out about it today. Been using FM7 for 1.5 years now as the patient database for our clinic and day care surgery. It has been great to use FM to organise our computerisation, though have had to struggle through many frustrating programming aspects and have a lot more to learn. I wonder if anyone could give me some help on the following problem. I am running Mac OSX 10.4.5 and Filemaker 6.0v4. I have an database which I have been using for about a year without any problems with printing. All of a sudden I cannot print, it sends to the printer and them says it has completed printing but nothing actually prints. If I try to PDF or Preview from the print menu I get the error message "Sorry, Filemaker is unable to continue printing (Error -9705)". I've been beating away at this for a bit now, but can't seem to come up with a solution. This worked well in FM6, mind you, so something from our recent FM8 upgrade is messing with this. We have a simple text field that uses a calculation to display a "warning" of sorts on a form. Nothing complicated, just a basic "If FieldA = 'yes' set field B to 'Warning'" type statement. Nothing appears there now, which is normally fixable except that when you click the field in Browse mode, the text is there. Click off the field, "poof" it disappears. For the longest time, I have used the 'Open URL' ScriptStep which makes a 'https://' request from both FMPro 5.5 and FMPro 8, to Internet Explorer. After installing the Internet Explorer 7 Beta on my PC, this wonderful functionality simply stopped working. Now when I initate the 'https://', the URL I receive in IE is 'http://1/'. Please note, normal non-secure 'http://' request continue to work properly. In search of a solution, I have checked my IE Internet Options against a PC with FMPro that still works correctly, but unfortunately I could not find an answer. Thus the post, anyone with any idea. I have been using FM for many years, but only recently have I been having this problem. For simplicity sake, let's say I have one table with two layouts. Layout One has been set up with name and address fields in Optima 14. Layout Two has the same fields but set up in Optima 12. Data entered into Layout One in Optima 14 appears as Optima 14 (not 12) when viewing Layout 2. I don't know whether I have changed preferences, or whether this inability to retain the field text properties when going from layout to layout is something to do with upgrading to FMP7. Is there something I should be trying other than reloading the FMP7 software? Any suggestions very welcome.

I've always been able to set the layout order in the pop-up menu by going to "Layouts", "Set Layout Order." Now the "Set Layout Order" is greyed out and not "selectable" - any idea what I've done? I did open the database with the master password, so have no idea why I'm being forbidden access. Help? Please and thanks. JW

I'm trying to reinstall FMP7. I've got a full v6 install disk that is now unreadable and a v7 upgrade disk. Does anyone know if there is a download available anywhere of the full version of 6? I've got a valid auth code, of course. And by the way, is it just me or is FileMaker about the worst company in the customer service area? I tried for quite awhile on two separate days to figure out how to get through to someone for info on the above - email, telephone, anything. I was not about to give them my credit card number for something like this, not until I spoke with someone. Really aggravating. Thanks - JAY

I am using FMP 7 Developer and sometimes, but not always, when I place the cursor in a text field, it appears one, or sometimes two, characters to the right of where I want it. But if I start to type or delete, the actual changes will occur one or two characters to the left of where the cursor appears to be. (This is the kind of little glitch that can really fry your brain when you don't have much to run on anyway!) Has anyone else run into this problem and is there a fix for it available somewhere?

Just making the move from FM6 to FM8. My layouts in the new version look really bad. All the fonts (mostly Ariel) look fuzzy/blurry. I've made sure my WindowXP settings are correct (to smooth fonts) and I've played around with the font smoothing style in Preferences. Nothing really helps. When I run both versions side by side my layouts in FM6 look smooth and crisp... the layouts in FM8 look like I need new glasses. What's up? Am I doing something wrong, or do I just need to stick with FM6 to get a clear, crips layout? Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi all, I have a looping script that inserts files (physical files, not refs) into a container. Before the script finishes the insertion of its 3990 files it crashes. I'm thinking that this must have something to do with the File Cache size and/or Saving Cache Contents, which can be specified in Preferences. Can anyone offer some insight as to how I can remedy this? FYI Script exits loop properly, so I know that isn't the problem. Also, toward the end of each loop is a "Commit Record" step. I thought that step would remedy it, but it didn't. Thanks in advance for any help offered!

We've got a data base that uses OLE to link to Word documents and less than 200 links has caused the DB to swell to the 2 GB size limit. Has anyone seen this and, is there a work around for this or is this a known issue? Thanks for any help, Stukes

When writing a script the function Set Variable is available. My question is. After you Set the Variable how do you change it in the script. For example: What if I Set Variable $Examp to 25. Then later in the script I want to add 15 to the variable. Do I just do another Set Variable with the same name?

Not even sure if this is a problem or not, however I noticed that printed forms now see to be justified differently since the upgrade. I had a bunch of forms that were justified (equal margins) on sides, top & bottom before the upgrade. Since the upgrade the right side and bottom were cut off, thus forcing me to make changes to again set the margins correctly. On the layout I now have to shift everything tot he right and going by the layout they are shifted way to the left. Also I have to now leave adequate space near the bottom and cannout get too close to the page cutoff line otherwise the bottom is cut off. Perhaps this was indeed a fix in the upgrade since I've…

Is there a way to script a tab control tab ?? Basically, I'd like to jump to a certain nested subtab based on a field value on the master record. So, if you have three employee types: A, B, C When you click on the contact info tab control tab, it will go to either the type A, type B, or type C nested subtab based on the type of employee it is. We have a few records in our database that won't allow data to be entered. We can call up the record and edit any of its fields that already have data, but if we go to a blank field, it won't allow us to do anything. 99% of the other records in the database are fine. I've been using FileMaker Pro 5.5 and 7 for a while now... and I'm currently working on recreating the database I have in 5.5 in 8. I wish i had the Advanced version but i'm stuck with the no so advance one for now. Questions: 1. Text Bounderies: As i started creating layouts in 8 i noticed that when you add some text in a layout the text boundaries don't shrink to the size of the text when i click on "Line Spacing, Single" like it used to do in 5.5.
