[color:black]I'm new to filemaker. I'm trying to create a report that vertically lists all the NAMES taken from multiple records based on which item or items have been selected in a checkbox. On my main account page I have a checkbox field with 5 values. Each record could have 0 to all 5 values checked, but each record will be different variations throughout the table. I want to have one single report page for each of the 5 items that lists all the NAMES from all the records that have that item checked. We have an odd problem plaguing one of our databases. Out of the blue over 200 records have cleared themselves leaving empty fields in every field. However, if you do a search for a name whose record was cleared it finds it and takes you to the empty record. In FileMaker 8.5 all the fields are empty but in FM 9.0 they all have a question mark in them. Any ideas on what is going on here?

I posted this thread a few weeks back but it ended up getting redirected to a place noone would visit and then just as quickly ignored so I thought I would repost in an effort to help troubleshoot my problem. "I've created a new db but it wont let me close the active window. It dosn't seem to be stuck in a script so I cant work out what it might be. Can anyone help or let me know how to debug, I can't think of anything."

I've built a columnar reporting layout that has two sub-summary parts. The database collects data on pages printed by our staff. The first sub-summary presents "pages printed" and "cost" sub-totals for each different page size printed for a particular project during the given reporting period. The second sub-summary displays a total for ALL the pages printed and the total cost for each job. The report works fine EXCEPT, there are times when a page break happens between the two sub-summaries. I would like to prevent that. Does anyone know of a way to "group" two sub-summaries together so they won't break onto two different pages?

Has anyone seen an app to help create custom layout themes 'fth' files. There is an article at FM http://www.filemaker.com/help/FMPA_Customizing%20Files8.html , but an app would be nice.

hello everyone--i have a problem with labels. i want to print different fields from my table into differnt sections, boxs, areas whatever one calls the area for the next label. i go to layout mode, select vertical labels and i get one label area white, the next two are greyed out. how do i get my next field to be printed into the next label areas for printing

I have a standardized layout template that I'm want to put current username on. When you look at the layout in browse mode, it shows in the field area, yet when I click on the field, shaazam, the username is displayed. Do I have to create a username field in any table where it's displayed on a layout? That seems like overkill.

I have a database (FMP 6) where I pull a number of fields together to get a layout for an envelope. I do this through a defined calculation field. The programming is: Title & "¶" & First Name & " " & Last Name & "¶" & Company & "¶" & Street 1 & "¶" & "¶" & Postal Code 1 & " " & City 1 & "¶" & Country 1 Now if there is no company I have a gap between the texts. Is there a way of avoiding this? Like having the text move up one line? Thanks

Hi Guys, Im creating a school registration system. I have created a list of records, and the teachers will see them in as list view. I have been asked from a user entry point of view that they owuld like to register the kids using keystrokes as this is much more convenient. Using the tabs, I would like to therefore tab down from one record to the next, is this possible. I know you can tab down, if you were in the same record, but I am proposing to jump from one child to the next for lets say monday morning. Cheers

Right now in my layout I have a "Sub-summary by STATUS (leading)." STATUS is the field for the values PENDING and PASS. So when I print, I have two nice sections of PENDING and PASS projects. Within those sections, the projects are sorted by date. How can I sort them by another field?--Say Alphabetically by author? AND since there are multiple projects by one author, how do I sort by date after that? In sum: I'd like to keep my sections of PENDING and PASS, and within those sections sort first by author, then by date submitted. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks! David

Hi ive made an invoice report with the layout's record source being line items. what is the best way to view an invoice, by the 'finding related records' (which clutters up the relationship graph) or just perform a find? thanks

Two issues. One layout has this striped background. How do I make it white? Other layout with merge fields has all data showing in Browse, Layout and Preview, does not have merge showing fields in Find. Print set up as envelop#10 landscape. Now fliping through the records, every other is blank. Want to print consecutive pages. Help would be appreciated!

Here is the deal...I have been using filemaker for many years and feel that I am pretty proficient at using it, but I am lacking in the area of importing GIF's to my layouts. Text fields in layouts seem to take a static width and height. But what if my text is variable in length and possibly in number of lines (the text has embedded newline characters)? Is there a way to have the text field adapt its size from one row to the next automatically? For instance, in an order I have many line items. Each line item's description may be more than some fixed number of characters, and may have some newlines in it for ease of reading complex descriptions. Yet on my order print-out layout, I can't accommodate this text since Filemaker wants a static-sized text box in the Body. Thanks for any Filemaker or third-party add-on ideas!

I have a list of contacts layout sorted on two fields. I want to insert a text side header after the last record in the first sort group (but not the second, which I realize can be done with a sub summary). Must be simple. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi I have a layout that is a 'Columnar list/report' using 'Grouped data'. The data shows correctly in Preview mode but only shows one record at a time in Browse mode although the subtotal value is correct. Any ideas. I have attached screen captures. Thanks

I've made a popup layout that list customers I have to recall - this is open from my main layout. When I click on their name in the list (I use go to layout to go to my main layout), it shows the correct records but in another instance of the main layout. How do I go to my main form showing the record I've chosen from the popup without more and more copies on my main layout opening. TIA

Hi. I am attempting to include various sized pictures into a layout. The container box has a pre-determined size but when I try to insert a picture it is expanded/contracted to fit the box thus adjusting the aspect ratio. Is there a way in which I can maintain the ratio without having to ensure that all pictures that I use have the same ratio to begin. Thanks

This is pretty inconsequential, but a niggling detail that's plagued me for ages. When I'm working on a layout for data entry that is intended never to be printed, I find it distracting to be seeing the squiggly vertical and horizontal lines that indicate where the boundaries for printing are located. I can't find anything under the 'View' menu that enable me to turn these off. What am I missing? (Or am I being too easily nettled?) Wickerman

ARRG. : With Layout Tabs, I have quite the solution now, only somehow, I have a number 2 tab (second from the left) in a row of 4 tabs that pops up first on navigation to the layout where the layout tabs exist and I cannot remember how to fix this so the number 1 tab comes up first. I know I read it somewhere on here but there are at least 3 different kinds of tabs in FMP, so finding the article is proving difficult. Can anyone help?

Hi Guys, this is my first post and I am very new to Filemaker Pro, but I am working on a simple catalog database. One of the main features is that there are tabs for different items. I have a list of clickable items such as: Lavatory Faucet Tub Faucet etc. and on the bottom have tabs that show the same items. I want to show the correct tab of Lavatory Faucet when someone clicks the Lavatory Faucet list item. I have tried with Object Name and then creating and If Else statement but I don't seem to know how to properly set it up. Any help is greatly appreciated. -MaNu

Hi All, I am developing a filemaker based solution for a company, what I want is I need to make it uneditable for users(ie locking in layout mode). I am not able to make it uneditable in layout mode, so what happens is that the users are able to modify the layouts. No one should be able to modify the layout/scripts except me, since the number of users are going to be quiet high (> 20). Please help in providing me a good solution. Hi here I just added a feature to record sound in my data base and when played I get the spinning beach ball, (it stops when the sound stops playing) has any one had this before and is it problem? the program does not crash.... also will adding sound to the database make it large and the database unstable? cheers D

In some ways Filemaker Pro has very old fashioned limitations, like the missing option to display a found set of records in multiple rows & columns in Browsing mode. This option is limited to the View/Printing mode, and .. in that last mode no interaction whatsoever is possible with what one sees nicely on the screen. Of course there are work-arounds and I have build one: - exporting thumbnail pictures to rows of repeating fields That works fine, but of course it needs a little time (each time) to construct such a lightbox of pictures. FMP V6.04 I like to create a button that by clicking it would copy 8 fields (all address details of a client) so I can paste it in to another document. I am not sure how to go about this. Do I need to write a script, and if so does anybody have a sample as I am not sure how to go about it. Alternatively I can think of creating a layout like an envelope and copy it from there. However I am not sure how to do this either as I can not find a way of copying this text field. In other words I would like a user to only have to click one button to perform the whole copy routine. Some labels are not on an 8.5 x 11 sheet. When I try to change the paper size in page set up to my labels...the labels print to the left as opposed to the center based on the printer's feed tray. Any ideas how to solve this issue?

I need a way to have my data adjust to fit within a defined field size. I want it to be the biggest possible size for the field but when it's longer, it needs to be smaller. I am creating a dynamic vocabulary database for my school and I want to be able to print vocab. lists and then go to half-sheet word wall cards and to 8-to-a-page flash cards etc. Some words are short like "sum" and others are "scientific method" and I don't want "sum" to be a small font in the middle of a huge card but if I make it that big, then "scientific method" wraps off the card. I am totally new to this, my apologies...I am working with an invoice database that I would like to produce reports with. The Problem: when I set up a columnar/list report the invoice tables do not all add up, only the first line in the report shows up. The invoice contains about 15 rows and each row is categorized by a pull-down "id". How do I get the report to reflect the remaining 14 rows when I do a report for a single month? Please help - Im tired and the people are losing faith. :)

I have used .png's with transparency successfully in the client just fine but when I see them through a browser, they all have white backgrounds. Does instant web publishing kill transparency or am I ever so slightly retarded? Once again I am appealing to the great gurus on this site who have been sooo helpful in the past. I have a table that contains 2 types of records: Sales and Returns and 2 layouts; one to enter/modify sales, one to enter/modify returns. My problem is how to permanently hide sales records when using Returns layout for data entry and vice versa permanently hide Returns records when using Sales layout. One solution would be to change the structure to 2 separate tables (1 for sales and 1 for returns); however reporting is so much easier with one table. Thanks for any pointer/suggestion.

can anyone help. How do I create a number of records in one layout based on the number of records found in another layout. EG..Layout 1 looks up layout 2 field X - Field X is related to 3 records in Layout 3. Layout 1 creates 3 records based on Layout 3. I hope this makes some sort of sense

Hey guys - I've uploaded an example to show you guys the issue. Layout 1 is the page I want to link to. I know I can do it from Layout 3, but that's not how I want it. I need Layout 2 to somehow link to the proper RMA number. If you click on the left side button, it will take me to Layout 1, but not the right one. I have used filemaker for Mini DV tape jacket labeling at previous employer. Is there a plug-in or a custom layout for this? I think they had a custom lay out that you could edit information like tape number, format, audio… I have tried looking for different post but have not come up with the information I need. Hi all, anyone have any thoughts on this? I have 2 related databases, related by city (in a contact list type layout) One db contains the contact info and the other is a form view of sorts, displaying all related contact info. Currently I set it up as a portal and it's working well. I also have a check box in each record and I'd like to tell it to export (or import to another database) only those that are checked. I can get it to export all records in the portal with no problem, but I'm not able to reduce the export set by omitting the checked boxes. So essentially I'm getting too much info. Hello, I created a database a few years back (with version 6 pro or version 6 developer, I can't remember), and it always opens with the layout mode unavailable. It never asks for a password. I seem to remember a keyboard button that you hold down while opening a file to force it to ask you for a password, but I can't figure it out. Anyone have any idea how I can re-gain access to administer this darn database!? I'm sure I have the password, I just can't get it to ask me for it... Here is my question. Is there a way where filemaker can make fields editable on 1 layout but when you switch to another layout the fields are not editable? What am I trying to do is have a list view of my records where the fields are not editable, however when a user clicks on a certain record from the list it will switch to the "form" layout and in this layout the user can edit field content. Help! I am new to filemaker and am not sure how to delete the PART that I created. Here's what I did: From the left-side tool menu I dragged part to the page. It became LEADING GRAND SUMMARY and now the page is split in two. When I print, an extra page comes out. I simply would like to delete this. Any suggestions?

One of my layouts is in “table view” mode for quick data entry, per the users’ request since they are coming from excel spreadsheets). Even if I rename the field names to more friendly names on the layout, in form view they are cool but in table view, only the actual field names show up. For instance, I have nameF (in data dictionary) for first name and renamed it to “First Name” for the layout. Table view only shows nameF, but form/list view will show First Name. It’s especially long and confusing for related tables like student:nameF Is there a way to fix this? Thanks in advance

Hi., I have a settings layout where I have about 150 fields (300 total, 150 regular and 150 global where global = regular so that global fields problem when more then one user uses the db is avoided). The layout is restricted to one record only. I made a self join via foreign key and what I would like to do is: Display 150 fields in portal (or something similar) so that they will fit onto one screen and no scrolling of the layout is required. Scrolling of the portal would be fine. I cannot figure it out as the portal scrolls only when it has more then one row and as I have only one record to display it would mean one row only. Is there a way to have a flash video be placed in a form? Lets say I want to have a video of how to pour water. I make a flash video of this and I want it to be shown in my app, however I do not want anyone using it to be able to remove it or mess it up by accident or otherwise. Any ideas? Thanks

I have a calender layout that i will be using multiple times., for various date related reporting. there are quite a large number of layout elements. i am dublicating the tables and using the relationships to filter in various data to reprot. Anwayt the question is there anyway to change multiple fields to a different table, or am i going to have to go through a click on all of them. a nice export to txt and re-import would be nice. a simple find and replace. it is such a simple task but is going to take a large chunk of time. this is where filemaker fails. i think it has a clunky layout design system; but thats enough winging : anyone got any ideas.

I have a log portal that includes text from emails sent to and from a person. Is there a way I can include a layout that prints out all the portal records in variously sorted formats while not wasting space. So that, if the first record has 3 lines of text, it uses that much vertical space, and that if the next record has 3 pages of text it expands to the necessary amount of space. This all happening for all the records in the portal, so that the user can print out the entire portal of emails without printing out whitespace?

I'm attaching a registration form that we are currently producing in a desktop publishing format. I'd like to design a layout in Filemaker Pro that will show the Course Selection box (course names, dates offered, price for members & nons, & CME) along with the hotel information. Any suggestions? I have the course information in a table already and can add a field that denotes when we are offering it ("2007 Fall Institute"). I can create a similar table for hotel information, if that's key. I am building a data base to handle home inspections, I am attempting to make it generate the report. For each section of the report than can anywhere from 2-45 code violations, I have the sections as separate table related to the actual report table. Originally I was going to make a layout that had a give space for ever code violation and then use sliding objects to hide the unused ones on a given report, the issue with that is the max layout size was no where near big enough. I am not sure I can explain this correctly but I will try. I have two related databases which work fine. The parent contains all the data and in the child is where additional data per end user is entered. For example one shipping container ( one customer )contains 10 different items - such as 3 boxes with spoons and 7 boxes of forks. The data in the child is further manipulated to reflect the distribution to up to 5 different end users. Each shipping container is a record. Hi, Does anyone know a way of changing the Sliding/Printing settings, via a script? I have a form view layout with a logo at the top which in some cases needs to be printed in a PDF and in other cases it does not. I don't really want to create another layout, but simply have 2 buttons at the top of the layout: BUTTON 1 for printing with the logo and BUTTON 2 for printing without the logo. Any ideas? Something weird has happened to my database. When I go into layout mode and select "go to layout" there is nothing in there anymore! Before I would see the list of layouts I had made. I'm making a form with 20 fields. Each field is for a product feature. I use these fileds to mak several different outputs, like a product leaflet and a catalogue. Some of the features may be used for the leaflet, and some for the catalogue. To gain this, I want checkboxes behind every field. One for every output. Once checked, the feature must appear to the output and if unchecked, this feature will not appear on the output. I've made the form and the outputs also, but I cannot get it to splite the features into different outputs. Can anyone give me a hint and help me out on this? Thanks!

Hi- I have a simple question and have been trying to find a solution to no avail. I am making a patient database. Each patient can have any number of photographs associated with them. So I have one table with a patient name field and a unique ID field (I'll call this the ID table). And I have another table (Photo table) that is an image table with a container field and a field that relates back to the Patient ID. I have made a relationship between the two based on the ID number. I made a layout with the ID table as the data source. I'm trying to create a directory of families. I have each member of the family listed with their own data, but would like to compile them all on one layout. For example, I have three members of a family: Bill Whatts, Sue Whatts & Jimmy Whatts. Each family member has their own contact record, tracking data for each. But I want to print out a one page directory for the family with Bill, Sue & Jimmy Whatts. How do I do that?

I have a layout that has text for a form letter. There is some conditional text that changes the length of the letter from one record to another. I want to place a JPG of a signature close to the bottom of the letter. I can't figure out how to do that in a way that the graphic repositions itself depending on the length of the letter. By contrast, this is very easy to do in Word. Any suggestions?

I would like to dynamically change a portion of a layout/report title based on user input. I have created a script to produce a report and would like the user to be able to indicate the scope of the data in the report; for instance, "First Qtr 2007", or "May 2007", or "Last Half 2006". The only thing I can find that comes close is the script command Show Custom Dialog. However, this command places the user input into a field in a table. This data is not related to a specific record in a table, but to the report itself - hence, the inclusion in the title. So, is there a way to have the user dynamically enter a portion of the title of a report? Thanks.

Good Morning all, I have an issue with an Accounts Receivable report that I would like help with.. We have it setup where it is a sub-summary (leading/trailing) by customer #. Depending on the amount of items a customer purchases, some customers have one page of items, some two pages, and some have three pages when printing reports. Has anyone built or know a way of just printing the last page of each customer statement when you have a found set of data pulled up? I'm fairly new to FM so I may well be doing something stupid here In our FM8 database I'm finding that "Go to Layout" is greyed out on the View menu. I have full Admin access, and I am able to go into Layout Mode, just not to access the entire list of layouts. On earlier builds of the database I can access it fine. This is a quest/challenge. If this already exists, could someone point me to it? If it doesn't maybe someone could give it a try. My thought was being able to print out one label at a time on a multi-label sheet such as Avery. This would mean letting the user choose row and column much like Word allows you to do. This would allow the user to re-feed a sheet of labels until all the labels are used. What do you guys think?

My apologies if this has already been answered - I did a brief search and couldn't find anything on this. I have an address label layout which contains several address fields (i.e. House / Town / State) which are populated with the corresponding data in my Contacts table via a script (using the 'set variable' and 'set field'). I have done this so that I can target where each label will print on the 8 - label per sheet layout (by defining each field with 8 different repetitions). edited to fix some errors in my description i'm using filemaker 8.0 on PC and 8.5 on mac os x. i imported a tab delimited file with 1300 rows and 12500 tabs. each field contains a 10 digit decimal number. i want to use the db to find subsets of the 1300 records from queries and then export the found set of records. "define db" shows 12500 fields as expected but the default layout only shows the first ~460 fields. if i build a layout from scratch, the 'move fields' dialog shows all 12500 fields and moves them but the layout still only shows ~460 fields, and only those ~460 fields will export. how do i get all the fields to display on a layout? also, if i export…

Every so often I manage to define a text field and place it on a layout in such a way that the text inside it doesn't wrap properly; i.e. at word boundaries. Instead it breaks at letter boundaries. I was wondering if you always need layouts. Like say for example you create a table for something that will never be worked into a front end design. It always creates a basic layout to go with it. If the records in this specific table only ever show up in a portal, do I need to keep the layout that was automatically created? Do I need for some reason that original layout to add records to the table through scripts?

Not sure if this is the right forum, but here goes.... My layout displays a map. The map may contain 100 or more points of interest. For each point of interest, 2 pieces of information are displayed: a container field with varying colors and another with a number field. The values for those fields depend upon a common date and data related to the particular point of interest. So for each point of interest there are 3 fields, 2 relationships, and a script that defines the action taken when the point of interest is clicked on. When someone opens the database under the guest account, I want it to open to a default page, with no records displayed, and the "home" layout. At the moment when anyone opens the database it opens at the last record/layout the last user was looking at. Anyone know a solution to this?

I have a subscription database with Active, Expired, Renewed and Canceled subscriptions. I would like to know, within any found set (whether it's a subset of found records or the whole DB), how many active subs there are, how many canceled subs, how many expired subs and how many renewed subs I'm looking at. I tried doing a subsummary, but since I'm summarizing text not numbers, I don't know how to make this work?

I'm having an issue with displaying data in in a trailing grand summary part. I'm attempting to run a report to display a contractors gross and net pay out. The first table is commissions, it stores all the money paid to the company. Through a relationship and lookup fields, it grabs the installers name and how much the installer was paid for each job. The second table is an items table which stores lines items for parts and supplies the installer has ordered. Keep in mind, there are several installers in this table. Hello all, I am looking to expand certain text fields, more than simply sliding up the empty spaces. Is there a function that will slide down other fields in a layout if a field goes beyond the allocated space. What I'm hoping to do is allow someone to submit a Fault Report with as much detail as they would like to add, and do not want to limit the amount of text they input in a field due to obvious details needed in a fault report. I have set up a database for project managment. I would like to have it so that i can have a layout with expandable components representing the jobs/tasks and sub tasks. I initially tried portals withing portals, it semi worked but my research says its not possible this way. Example layout Job + Task + Sub-Task + Sub-Task + Task ... Job ... Hi, I have a table "Projects" and another table "Issues". The idea is to have many issues entered for each project, so there is a one-to-many relationship. I made a issue layout, with a drop down list box to select which project the issue would be for. But, the list only displays 3 projects, even though I have defined about 7. I have set the list to "display all records". Currently there are no other TO's in the relationship between Project and Issue. There is a customer table, and each customer will be able to have many projects. But that table hasn't been added to the relationship. So many forums, I hope this is right place to post. My question is how do you handle the difference in behavior between drop-downs in IWP verses the FMP client? For example, say you have a value list whose values are, say, companyID & you're also showing the values of a 2nd field companyName. In the FMP client, you'll get a drop-down that shows this info, but after a selection is made only the vendorID appears. Contrast this to IWP. The drop-down is the same, but after a selection is made, the companyName, not ID, is displayed. (And, yes, I understand the reason for this behavior.) I have a solution which registers teachers for professional development training. There is a table for the level of training (Algebra I, Geometry II, etc) which is viewed in a portal. So far, so good. The problem: I'm trying to create a subsummary report which tells me how many people are registered for each level. However, the report only summarizes what appears in the first row of the portal. Thus a person who is registered for both Algebra and Geometry only gets counted in the numbers for Algebra, if that is what is listed first. However, he still shows up in a found set for either one. I'm using Instant Web Publishing with Filemaker 8 Pro (not advanced); my start up script hides the status area but along the left side of the window (where the status area used to be) there is a strip of white. This happens when the database is opened with explorer and firefox, etc. There is just this strip of white, i.e., no background colors. In filemaker pro itself, in browse mode, when I hide the status area, the background fills in completely where the status area used to be so I can't seem to even access the problem... I use FM 8.5 to generate proofs for clients. We are printing two size books; one at 100% and one that will be 85%, shot to film at the printer. My problem is this; I have one container field that imports 9 different ad sizes (created to size in Illustrator CS2). My boss would like to reduce the ad size to appear 15% smaller, so that the client will see the proof at actual size in the smaller directory. Is there a way to make the content of a container appear 15% smaller, no matter the dimensions of the actual file?

How do you change a subsummary from trailing to leading and vice versa? It seems that the only time you can do it is when you first create it.

I have lots of layouts in my current Filemaker Solution. There is no avoiding it. There are tons of printouts on a weekly basis and just lots of different aspects and functions of the company I am designing for.
