    I print an attendance roster of members eligible to attend faculty meetings, some who have voting rights, some who do not. If a vote is going to be taken in the meeting, we need to accurately count the number of voters to establish whether a quorum has been reached, in order to make the vote official. I used to have the names formatted as such: printed in red for voters and black for non-voters. But these prickly professors were offended by being marked in red (or not marked in red), so I created a calculation field which displays a discrete * by the names of the voters so we can take our necessary count.     If I need to post this in a different forum, please forgive me and point me in the right direction. Creating a database for a client and have one more bump to get over before I'm home free. I'm trying to set up a report and I can't get the results I want. I know it's simply because I don't know enough about parts and summary fields, so I could use some help. I have a number of financial entries. Let's say five of them are in January, and five are in March. When I create my report, sorting by date, it gives me January, January, January, January, January.     This is definitely a newbie question, but here goes: I've got a field in the checkbox format. I would like to show the checkboxes, but not the border around the entire field. I've tried every possible manipulation I can imagine in trying to remove the border while retaining the checkboxes, but they seem to be linked in their formatting. As you will see on the attached, this field is currently really ugly--it works on my layout, but it looks bad. Can I keep the checkboxes but lose the border? Or are they considered the same 'thing' by FM? Thanks!

    Hello, I open a pretty large, multi-file solution each day. Sometimes the display refreshes many times before stabilising. Most times, this does not happen. Today it happened a long while after I opened the solution. It just went on and on. A bit of background which may or may not be related: 1. I zip a backup on a remote machine each night. 2. The zip file is transferred and unpacked locally. 3. I then open it. Anybody else suffer 8.5 hiccups? Any ideas of why or how to avoid it? Norman

    I currently have 3 fields relating to an employees employment date: The first field is the date of hire The second field is a calculation of years from the first field. The third field shows an employees exit date. My question is this: is it possible to have the second field (calculation of years worked) stop calculating the years if a date is entered into the third field (date of exit) I know I could get a calculation from field one and three after the employee leaves however I do not want a calculation of that nature, I need to be able to look at the field and get a “live” display of the worked years.     I have a laptop that runs both Filemaker Advanced 8.0 V3 and 8.5. It's a Dell Inspiron 9300 with 1gb of RAM and an ATI Radeon X300, Windows XP Pro SP 2 all updates. For whatever reason, if my laptop is not restarted for a few days, the display of Filemaker gets out of whack. If I go into Layout mode, I can't see any of the borders of any text objects or any objects at all. When I go into a field and I try to type into it, you can't see any of the text you are typing. When I click out of it, whatever you typed in there will be displayed. All button effects do not show up at all in any format such as Bezeled, Chiseled, Drop Shadow, etc. This is driving me cra…

  7. :) Hi -- can you help me with the best way to approach the problem of having set up a layout which is fine until... one of the fields has too much text in it. I've attached a screenshot of my layout. It's for a database of video tapes. It fits onto one sheet of A4. But there's too much shotlist information to fit in the box. What next? Is it a tab control?     I have 5 seperate files, each containing > 600 fields with specific tab orders. When the customer makes a change which adds a field or changes the location of a field I have to change the entire tab order from that point on. Or do I? Is there any short cut, rather than resetting the entire tab order? Please keep in mind I'm new at this. Thanks

    I have a report layout which has a letter on it. In the middle of the letter I have a 12 row portal. Each row in the portal has 2 rows of fields, the top one is merge field with a description and cost, the one below is a paragraph of formatted text which describes the item. I have the portal expanded down quite a bit to make sure there is enough room to fit the varying lengths of the description text. I have set the sliding to All above/reduce the size of enclosing part. But it's not reducing the extra space in the portal at all. It’s leaving it the exact same size. Any ideas? I just can't figure out what's wrong.

    I hate these.... I have been using 8.0 since it came out but have not gotten any of the upgrades yet. I am also on Windows XP. Had no issues then yesterday I did SOMETHING not sure what. Now when i RUNNING FM and i try and copy, cut, or paste in any application it hangs all the applications which i have to force end by hitting the close X or using the task manager. Besides reinstalling any ideas on how to fix this? I have tried other brand new DBS with no success. I can cnp without FM just fine it is only when it is running that i have clipboard issues Strange eh?

I only need to see the monthly totals, for example... Oct.......54,000 Nov.......55,000 Dec.......56,000 I've tried to make a summary report it has a subsummary sorted by date part which i put the date field and the amount field into but it does not total by month. It shows like 20 Octobers followed by 25 novembers, etc;... please help.

    Hello, I am working on a invoicing solution for the company I work for, and as part of this solution I need to print off a calculated number of labels. (For packaging) I have a count field with the number of products on the invoice. And what I would like to do is to use this value to print off that number of labels. I have looked at the "Label Generator" file but I am having difficulties trying to reverse engineer this to match my own needs. I would be grateful if anyone could give me a few pointers on how to manipulate this to solve the problem listed above. I appreciate any help that might be offered.

I also would like to capture their IP Address and Computer Name. Get(HostIPAddress) and Get(HostName) gives me the IP Address and Name of the Server where the files are hosted but I would like the client IP Address and Client Computer Name which the programmers are using.   17. I'm not sure I'm explaining this correctly - but the problem is that the layout stops showing the sub summary sort after I've gone back into the table to make some data changes. The sub summary is based on the "street name" field (and there's a "street name summary" field )and then there are a series of summary fields, let's just call them a, b, c,d, etc. For each street, I get the totals for each of the summary fields. The first time I set up the layout, after much trial and error, I can get the layout that I want (I'll skip over why I can't get it right the first time.)     I really hate to bother everyone with such a newbie question, but this thing is getting the best of me and I am about to just give up on it. I have a date field and I want the date shown to turn red if it is within a 7day window, so the viewer can see that the date is approaching soon. I have tried the Date <= get(currentdate)+7 and change textcolor calculation but I get nothing. What am I doing wrong? Can the textcolor be used on a date field? Thanks James

    OK let us say that you create a new record, then you input a number in a field, lets say 1,000. now what i am trying to do is to get a second field to reconize what has been put in the first field and automatically put the correct number in the second field lets say the second field is to show 10% of 1,000. so you put 1,000 in the first field click off the page and 10% of that thousand automatically pops up in the second field. any ides??

    I'm trying to manage large blocks of text displayed in individual fields. I'd like to provide the user with buttons to move to the top and end of the block. In other words, exactly what the Ctrl+Home and Ctrl+End keys do from a PC keyboard. I've been working with the Set Selection[Record::Field] but can't get the results I need.     Hello everyone, I need some expert advice. I was building a layout with a field for a “Course” selection, I was just going to us a value list with drop-down arrow on the field, and then I found out that they had about 400 courses. How can I effectively implement a solution so that the user will not have to type each course ID in the field? The only thing I can think of is using the value list, and have the auto complete enabled and not show the drop-down arrow on the field?     I'd like to use a consistent GUI for the Contacts database I'm developing, with navigation buttons on the right. However, I can't follow this through to the List View (or table view, for that matter). So I thought I'd try and show the records (found set) in a portal on a Form layout so I can keep the GUI consistent. I have created two tables, I want to enter data into table #1 and have it also fill in table #2.     I'm trying to display a preview of PDF files in a container field. This is in a cross-platform FM8 database stored on a server. The users are 1/3 Mac, 1/3 Windows 2000 and 1/3 Windows XP. I could get the file preview to display in Windows 2000 and Mac by using a Windows 2000 PC to drag the file from it's folder on the network into the container field. The first page of the file then displays as a preview on the Mac and Windows 2000 PCs. BUT on Windows XP the preview doesn't show unless you click on the container field. Then the file hangs up for about 3 minutes until the preview displays. Way too slow to be functional. This happens whether it's dragged and drop…

    While we click any button the button color changes to black for the moment the button remains pressed. How can we prevent that or change the 'onclick' color to button color? Actually i want the to suppress the dialog box that appears asking to save(when automatic save is turned off).     Hi there, I don't know my way around FileMaker at all, though I've been trying to pick it up. I can't figure out how to do something that seems fairly basic. I want a layout that only shows a particular field (and its label) when that field contains data. If the field is empty (and this is the bit where it maybe gets hard) I want the fields beneath it to move up to fill the space. But if the field is over a line, I want it to resize and push everything else down.     Have a database used by Macs and PCs. Students use the database to complete online tests. However, if I use a font such as Arial, the setup on the Macs looks different to that on PC. Consequently, some questions appear "hidden" behind a field. I need a font that will leave my layouts appearing identically on both. In an ideal world, I'd stick with century gothic which is on both machines but gives me the problems mentioned. Any ideas? Thanks.

    I have suddenly encountered a problem with a layout in a file that has been very stable (up 'til now). This file has 17 different layouts. When I go into Layout mode I can work with 16 of them just fine. But, when go into the other one, FMP crashes. I have tried a recovered copy, and a backup copy from a week ago, and both do the same. I repaired the disk permissions and closed all other applications, except the finder. HELP!!!

    Hi! Sometimes when I put text or field on layout, go to browse mode and back in layout mode, text falls 1px down. Then when I double click in text or field it jumps up, but when I go into browse again it falls down. I happened to me on few layouts...I have to create layout from scratch.     Hi Everyone, I've got a question about displaying (and manipulating) related images. I've got a related table that I want to display multiple images for one record. The thing is, I'd like to display six pictures (three rows, two columns). Using the portal doesn't seem very flexible, can it be done with the portal? Or is there another way? I was thinking about having a separate related table for each of the six different kinds of pictures, that way I don't have to use a portal right?     I'd like to display the total number of records in a table at the bottom of a layout. I want this count to be of all records in the table, not just the records in the current found set. I'm guessing that I need to use a global field to store this, but not sure how to proceed. Can anyone offer any advice?     I have a report that takes job tasks, rolls those up to a job code level, then summarizes by manager and chief. something like this: Chief -- Manager ---- Job Code Total ------ Task ------ Task ------ Task ---- Job Code Total ------ Task ------ Task -- Manager Total Chief Total For the life of me i cannot figure out how to get the sum of the Job Code costs to calculate on the manager and chief total parts.     Hi - I'm trying to create a way for a user to choose a surrogate primary key (serial number) but only see a more descriptive field. FM has the ability to show a value list based on a field, and only show a second variable. However, this seems to only work correctly with popup menus. With a drop down, you see only the second field when you click the field, but when you leave it, you see the actual variable assigned to the field (in this case the surrogate key). This will be confusing to user, but I prefer not to use a popup because it doesn't allow autofill by typing first letters. Any way to do this? My company needs to print out the Specifications of these products in order to send to customers.     I know this must be simple but please help. If I run a script from within the file and it tell it to go to my date field, I get a drop down calendar as I should, but if I call that script from a different file (Main Menu) I just get a blinking cursor in my date field

    I have a file with student records. Each student has its own information and a parent id. I need to determine how many children are in each family and pritn a report that is sorted by that number. For example Davey Jones might have 5 children in school. Tom Lasorta, 4. Anna Frank, 5. It should come out with a 5 children group displaying Frank and 5 children, and Jones with the 5 children info. Then the 4 children section with Lasorta and children info. As I mentioned, I can differentiate parents using the parent id. Thanks, Mike

    I am trying to build a form which uses a field that can self-expand, i.e. is not constrained by set vertical boundaries. For example, if I enter one word into the input field, the resulting field is one line high. If were to I enter a list of items numbered 1-10 or if I enter a long string or paragraph that wraps 10 times, the field adjusts to be 10 lines high. Is this possible in FileMaker?

    I downloaded an example database posted to one of my questions and it had the part labels displayed vertically. Many times I have fields that are mostly covered by the horizontal labels which can be annoying. I searched around trying to find a way to change the direction of the labels but I couldn't find anything. Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks js22

    I have a report layout that has a trailing grand summary. I would like to be able to print a footnote in the footer on the same page as the trailing grand summary. Placing the footnote text in the footer causes it to print on every page which is unacceptable for my audience. I've placed it in the trailing grand summary part itself but again my audience did not like this as it is never in the same location. Can anyone help me with this. Thanks!

  67. Hi All. I have a script that checks for all of the field validations when the user tries to exit the record/layout (I have two buttons that allow navigation away from the layout). If any of the validations fail, the user gets a specific error message and the script exits. This works perfectly, except for one issue. I have several portals on the layout and i do not believe that the validation checks against every related record, only the first one. Is it possible to script a check against every related record? Thanks for any input.

    Ok I have worked out how to use the seperation model in FM8.x, but I have a client that uses FM5.5 and 6 and wish to use a seperate GUI and Data model, but for the life of me cannot work out how to best do this, does anyone have a good example to share please of an FM5 or FM6 seperation model.     Heres my situation. My company is dealing with manufacturing. So we have an order, and we assign employee numbers to work on that order. We are using a field as a Checkbox, with a Valuelist that has all the employee numbers. In a 2nd Layout we want to create a report. We would use Find to filter down to a single Employee. and review the orders that employee worked on. We used the same field, except as an edit box to show the data. Now I have 2 problems: 1) the Editbox does not show the Employee Numbers in numeric order. It shows who was clicked first first, and second is second. 2) The edit box shows only the first chosen number. It does not put them…

    I would like to display on a layout the order in which the table is presently sorted. If the sort selection is changed, this field would reflect the new sort order. How can this be done ? I tried with a global field and the Get(sortstate) function but this only tells me if the table is sorted or not (0,1)- doesn't give me the field name. I'm also looking for a method where a user could select the sort fields from a dropdown list (where I would put only a few fields-not all of them), and have the sort run after having done the selection.     I have a script that takes the user to a print preview mode for several reports with user abort [off]. The user needs to select the continue button to scroll through all the reports and exit the script, which takes them to another layout. Is there away to allow the user to cancel the print preview at any time and return to the other layout? if i turn user abort [on] it will allow the user to cancel the script but leaves them on the report layout. thanks for any help.

  75. I am a new user and I am using FM Pro 8.5 trial version. I can add and reorder fields in the Define Database dialog but when I OK out of it the first time and then reorder fields a subsequent time, the new order does not show up in any of the views. I can add new fields and change their order within the dialog but the new order does not show up in any views when I OK out of it. I can rename fields but any data associated with a field will remain associated with the original field regardless of the new name so this is not a valid work-around. If I delete a field, it leaves a gaping hole where the field was. This is a serious problem as I have no way of maintaining an exist…

The file has two main scripts, one to go into preview mode (and sort by company) for the sub-summary layout report, the other script to go back to Invoice layout as Browse mode. However, I may be in meeting #3, Joe may be in meeting #5, and Sandy may be in meeting #1. Regardless of what repetition any record is on, I need it to sort and print by date. How do I set up my layout so that it allows for all repetitions, but only prints a repetition if it has a date in the date field?

    I have a date field. I only want dates entered by selecting from a drop-down calendar. I've tried turning off entry to the field and attaching script with: Go To Field [ dropdownField ] ... with and without Select Field Contents Nothing I can think of works. Unchecking 'include icon' allows the pop when field entered - but doesn't prohibit entry to the field. Once the calendar is open, I don't want them to be able to click again and end up in the date field itself. I haven't played with 8.5 yet - maybe GoToObject?     I am trying to create a layout that will display the last seven records of attendance along with customer demographic information. I know how to get the records through a find, but I am having trouble coming up with a solution to display them. Oh yes, and I need the horizontal versus the vertical layout of a portal. It would look something like this. Name - Phone - att. record 7 - att. record 6 - att. record 5 - etc. The record would display whether they were present or not.     [color:green]Here's a stumper for you. We are using filemaker 8 in a small office of 4 computers. One of our layouts imports media names from another layout as a drop down list. On the host computer, the alpha list stops around the S media. On all the other ones, the list is able to be viewed through Z. This wasn't always the case and we're not sure what happened or how to resolve! Any ideas on problem/fix? Much thanks.

In the footer, I want it to say "Records 1-10" on the first page, "Records 11-20" on the second page, etc. I can only figure out how to insert the number of the LAST record on the page (using symbol @@).     I would like to use filemaker to complete forms using data from each of my clients. The forms are available as PDFs, and I would like to ovelay each client's data onto the form. I tried to save the file as a jpeg using Adobe Acrobat standard and import the file into filemaker but the quality of the printouts is horrible. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to doing this?

  91. Hello gurus, I am trying to create a form which takes the free text input of a field from my database and prints it on the resulting page. The issue is that the field (text box with scroll bars) could have anything from a few words to a many paragraphs of data within it. When creating the hardcopy form, I am using mail merge fields to output the data and the part in question needs to be printed in its entirety, to be followed by other static data, which is then followed by yet more dynamic data. How do I get a field to dynamically resize and adjust the space required automatically?

  93. I'm having some trouble displaying borders on my print layout. I have a attached an image of what I have done so far and what I would like to achieve. I need to display borders (like a table) but as some of the fields can contain alot of text or almost none, I have to resize the fields in order to print it. The resizing works very well, but as it's a A3 print, I need to include borders to make it more readable.

To do an experiment you can use either of two different mixtures. The layout that I'm working on is an overview of what was done.   98. I have recently upgraded from FMP v5.5 to v8.0. Former separate files and their relationships are now separate tables and relationships in one file. A few layouts that contain table fields and related fields behave differently when changing records. For example, in layout mode I set my "advisment" layout to view records from my "main_info" table. For some records in browse mode, it shows "main_info" data fine but will not allow data entry in related fields on the same layout from my "advisor" table.
