FM 9 Adv, Win Vista SP-1. Creating and editing field names in this latest version of FM is driving me crazy . Just about every time I create or edit a field label it becomes clipped and I have to adjust the object so the text fits. Even if I simply make the text bold, it becomes clipped. Ditto if I simply edit the text. Does any else have this problem? Is this a bug in FM 9 Adv?

I want to show summary data in a portal. • the Parent table is "Projects" • the Child table is "Tasks" - it contains TaskName (e.g. Design, Production, Printing) and TaskAmount (which is a number) I created a self-join relationship in the Child table to sum the data for TaskAmount and this works fine. But in the portal in the Parent table I see ALL the related TaskName records (each one showing the correct sum of TaskAmount). I have a pop-up window with a stack of variables the end user needs to complete. They are grouped by various headings. It is on one layout so the user can print/pdf it and pop it on file (hence multiple tabbed screens not suitable). I ultimately would like it to have these headings much like a shortcut at the top of a page which scrolls to the applicable area e.g a scroll much like HTML code i.e Go To Section 2 blah blah blah blah blah blah Welcome To Section 2! I'm searching for good icons for creating a link and breaking a link. Here's my criteria. They must be instantly recognizable for what they mean at 15 x 15 pixels size. At that size icons of two chain links broken and whole just don't register well. At least none that I've ever seen. In the past I've used the red circle with a diagonal slash through it as my symbol for omitting records. So conceivably I could use a green empty circle for making a link and a red slashed circle for breaking a link. But then I'd still need an intuitive icon for omitting records. I have a database with the following tables: Contacts, Quotes, and Products. In the list view of Quotes, I have all quotes listed with the contact information of the contact associated with the quote. I want add to list, all the products, quantities, and prices of all the products for each quote inside a portal. I inserted a portal in the list view of Quotes and in browse mode it only shows up inside the first record. Hi, I recently copied a technique for incorporating GUI elements from a database I inherited that seemed cool but now I'm not so sure. The Technique: in a table called Preferences there is a container field with repeating values. Each repetition contains a GUI element (e.g. an arrow, a check mark, a delete symbol etc.) The Preferences table is then related to another table via a 'X' (Certesian) join using a gConstant field in the Preferences table and using the ID in the other table. Hello folks, I'm using a web viewer in order to get access to some PDFs (using SuperContainer) but since the DB must be accessible both inside and outside my LAN I need to switch the URL according to fact that the user is inside or outside the LAN. I have tried to use as a URL the internal IP and I can access to the PDFs only when I'm inside the LAN (when I'm outside I get a connection timeout). I have changed the URL to the public IP and in this scenario I can access only when I'm outside the LAN (inside I get a connection failure error). I am setting up a "People" database for an organization with contacts that serve a range of functions to the organization and one person can serve more than one function. At this point there are about 11 functions laid out. I would like to set up the database so that there is a field with a checkbox list of the functions that each person serves (funder, film subject, govt contact, etc). If the person entering information into the database checks the box then the section with the necessary fields to be filled in will appear below. If it is not checked the section will not appear. I would like to preface that I am fairly new to File Maker so excuss me if I do not get the terminaology corret. Also thank you in advance for your help! I am looking to be able to copy and paste information pulled into the data base so that I can preform a "find" I have noticed that I can only copy and paste for editable fields, however. I have 2 tabs. On each tab I have a table occurrence for the primary parent table and a table occurrence for the child table. When I delete a record from the child table portal and click the other tab - the record still shows in the portal UNTIL I click on the layout and then the screen will refresh and the record disappears. I'm using the Refresh button with the cached join option. Any ideas?

Currently, I have a user interface that contains several gradient images. I tend to use the same base project management system for different clients and retool it for each. I am trying to update that base system and provide some clients updates to their existing system. Also, I just want to have a better base to work with. How to do a report with 15 break fields? There are about 100 clients, their contact layout is the parent table. Each client has three fields reporting a status, and each of those three fields is a drop down list of about 15 status-types. I need a report on those 15 status types as the break fields, listing the names under each status-type. Each client therefore will appear up to three times. HOW?! I am stumped right now. I've inherited some databases where text fields have all sorts of different formatting in them that need regularizing, so I was happy to discover the strategy of using the TextFormatRemove(Self) as an auto-entry option, so that when I build a database I can control the formatting of various fields that wind up getting put ontto reports etc. I'm tempted to just make this a standard practice for all my text fields -- would anyone anticipate any downside to this practice? Of course, it prevents the user from doing something he or she might like to do, but aside from that -- any consequences I'm not foreseeing? wickerman

I cant imagine what my problem is -- I'm trying to solve all sorts of higher-level challenges, and suddenly I find I can't even create a button the size I want. Here's what happens: I click the button-drawing tool and draw a button. can make it as tall as I want or as wide as I want . . . but I can't make it *shorter* than 26 pixels tall. If I draw it, say 18 pixels tall, when I let go it snaps out to 26 pixels. If I try to change the height value in the Object Info box, it reverts to 26 when I tab out of it. It *does* allow me to make the button taller than 26 pixels. The default anchors of top/left are checked. THis is holding true on any layout. …

Hi Group, I have never had the need to use filtered portals and have consequently never taught myself the technique. Does anyone have a white paper that explains how, why and where filtered portals are best used? Does anyone have a small sample file that demonstrates how filtered portals work? I am working on my most ambitious project yet and I think a filtered portal (by the function the name implies) will help me display a set of data that would be difficult to display otherwise. Hi I have an FM script that "scrapes" data from webviewer. This is an automated data collection tool that I use on a hospital lab system with an HTML interface. Occasionally an entry in the web-based system produces a dialog box which interrupts the script and I must manually press return or click "OK" to allow it to continue. The dialog is purely on the web server side and has nothing too do with FM. The same dialog would come up if the web based lab system was queried manually in a web browser. I have searched the forum, but can't find this topic, though I am sure it is here somewhere. I have a portal that is based on a self-related table. The relationships are name=name and X=status. The X field is a constant set up in the table. The status field has an X inserted as appropriate based on where the item is in the work flow. The primary problem is the portal is showing blank. We added some navigation tools and found that what it is doing is showing only one record at a time. Without the navigation tools, it is locked up as blank. Hi, I have one field that displays a second value lookup as popup menu. I do want to have the same result in a second field. I have been struggling with a Window Refresh problem - have found a solution but do not understand why the problem occurs. I have a portal that creates a list of activites, I want to grab that last portal row and get it to display in another field. Example I worked on something I gave it a date and description and Location This is a table that displays on another table in a portal. I have it sorted so the first record by date is the one I want. I want it to show on my next table in two fields one field is the date the other is description. I use this field in other layouts so I do not want the portal in every layout. That is it. I would like to make a button appear if the current count of records in a portal is more than 1, disappear if 1 or zero. In FMP6 I used the trick of a one record portal that displayed that record if the relationship was satisfied. That solution always felt quite clutzy, but it worked. In FMP9 I can hide the button under certain conditions by making the text and fill of the button match the background. However the button will still flash when that area is clicked. So this solution isn't ideal. Is there a better way? In a related issue, I've worked out a way to obtain the displayed count of a portal. It works, but it also feels clutzy. Is there a better way. …

I know this sounds really dumb but it's a project that has confounded me in the past. I can't remember what the crash was because I can't imagine why there should be one but there was. I want to produce a simple mailing label, about the size of a business card. Can anybody recommend a particular label product to do this with. Hi, Is there any way to create a list of all layouts that are not used in any script? Maybe a plugin or a script? I know that using a DDR or some external reporting product I could find this out, but one by one (not nearly practical when you have hundred of layouts and scripts). I need some help with setting up a sub-summary report, which is pulling data from different tables. I know (after my last problem with this) that the sub-summary fields have to be from the table that you create the layout in. Hi, I am relatively new to Filemaker. I am trying to use the TimeCards template to do timecards for my company's staff. When we choose the week and have the staff enter their hours, everything seems to work fine, but when we switch to a new week, to enter hours for the next week, the hours just stay there. Is there a way to keep the staffs hours from multiple weeks in one database? Or is filemaker (or maybe just this template specifically) just not geared toward this sort of thing? Hey, I wonder if there is a solution to this problem: I have a table1 that contains a field called Keywords1, and a table2, that contains a field called Keywords2. (In the Keywords fields the user can enter any word that he thinks is important to help him categorizing the record.) Now, ideally, when entering words the user can choose from a value list that uses values or words of both fields. I could not find anything that actually answered how to copy data from one table to another in the same database. Do you simply import and while browsing, select the same database? I have 1 file with 2 tables (students, faculty). From the students file, I would like to "assign" up to 3 faculty to a student via a Portal. In the faculty file, there is 1 record for each teacher. On the student file I have a value list "Faculty" that is calculated with each teacher's first and last name. How do I relate the 2 files? I tried passing the the StudentID field to a Faculty_LinkID in the faculty file. I have the relationship set to Create New Records. I think I am missing a simple step. Hello I am building an application that contains a table with 113 fields in it, however, of these, 60 are calculation fields used to summarize data from various child tables. The layout this table is used on does load slightly slower than other layouts, however, it is not really an issue. My question is I need to add another 10-15 calc. fields to this table and am wondering if it already is way too big? I'm on a Layout entitled PROJECTS, on which I wish to include a set of tabs which displays projects according to status (eg, Active, In Development, Cancelled). I'd like each "tab" so to speak to display a portal of projects of like status (eg, a portal showing only Projects which are "Active" on one tab, and Project which are "In Development" on another tab). The example, a serialized products table that includes a number of fields describing the product. In other DBs I would create individual tables for the descriptive fields related with an ID, or put them all in one related table linked with an ID and a type. Filemaker appears to prefer using value lists for many things I might normally use tables. Is this one of them? I've search and searched but can't seem to find a way to dynamically set the number or rows that show up in a portal. Here is what I have. I have 120 schools, each with a number of teachers ranging from 5 to 180. I need to be able to create printed copies of a layout that shows basic school info at the top, and a portal with the teachers in the portal below. You can see the problem here is that I have to set the portal rows to 180 even though there are some campuses that have substantially less than that. I need to take the contents from several records and place into one text field. I don't even know where to begin, it's so confusing. Okay, here's what's up. I'm trying to create a database for a research project for online companies. Keeping track of various products that are sold, cards accepted, etc. Not gotten very far past fields and tabs. The help desk people tell me not to use templates, start from scratch but I want file tabs and such. Wonder if anyone out there is doing a similar project who could let me see how they went about it, perhaps explain features used.

I have 2 fields, "Dues Paid" and "Dues Due On" to calculate if dues are current or delinquent. However, the code is not working. Say the dues are paid yesterday and today is the due date. The word "Delinquent" should NOT show but Current should. However, that is not the case. How do I make it so if dues are paid today and due yesterday, it will still show current and not delinquent? If ( Dues Paid > Dues Due On ; "Delinquent" ) and If ( Dues Paid < Dues Due On ; "Current" )

Hi. Im looking to display variables directly onto the screen somehow. I was thinking of putting these variables (get(accountname) etc) into a field, but as the user is multi-user it would not work correctly as each user would override it. How can I schieve this please? Cheers, Greg

I have several known good url's to a jpg image that won't show in the web viewer. I suspect that it is because they are in a subdomain. Can anyone confirm this offer suggestions. I have confimed that the web viewer path is correct. There is no error msg. but no image either.

Hey folks, I have created an application that allows stores to login and select quantities of products to order each day. It works great, but it is very slow to create a new order, as it has to create hundreds of portal rows listing products for order each time. I have a table for Orders, a table for Inventory and a table for Orders_Inventory which handles the details of each order. To create the list of products for order, I enumerate the items in the inventory and create a new row in the Orders_Inventory table with the PK of the new Order. I'm looking to replicate the functionality shown in iTunes smart playlists, in which the user pulls down a behavior from a drop-down list, but can add more. Basically I would like to have an inventory of car enthusiasts. For each person, I would like to let them add multiple cars in their collection. I'll cut right to the meat of the issue and will be happy to elaborate upon request. I have a database with membership numbers that are a different length depending on the global region (North America, Europe, etc.). I wanted to flag membership numbers that are not the correct length for the region by using conditional formatting to change the field background color to red. Here's my problem. I've chosen "Formula is" for the condition and specified an "If" function for the calculation. I have a portal showing data from a table and it works well. My problem is that the portal rows are too small and not appropriate for showing some of the data in the record so I want to display the active portal record's other data elsewhere in the layout and I need it to refresh as portal rows are selected. Imagine a contact list for a given company where each contact has specific and in-depth instructions for how to handle a transaction. In one layout I create bank accounts. That information is copied into one new record from the main layout. In that main layout I have a portal with the names of the accounts. The relationship between those tables is marked "X", so every account appears on that portal. On the main layout I have another portal with the bank statement and balancefrom the transactions layout. The problem is when I want to navigate from the portal with the account names on it. Maybe is too basic, but I can't find a way to make it work with the "Go to related record". Hello, A customer have two different layouts, one with logo, and the other one without it. He wants an unique layout with a checkbox asking "Do you want the logo?". With the checkbox is checked, it will print with logo. If not, it will print it with without it, because it is already at the paper. I have tried with buttons, without success. The checkboxes must be from a field in the datebase! Any ideas? I have search in google, in the filemaker training series, and I do not know how to do it yet : Thank you very much in advance.

<< :: Close I am not sure what or how this "piece of code in a Report we print, above means or find its explanation in FM.. was created on a Report Layout I am trying to understand.. It allows us to exit okay ON one layout or a report we print, our programmer added this code.. New here, I have done pretty well so far with scripting and the relationships to get data back for reports. But now I have a request for something I'm not sure that can be done. We have data from a table that contains and air day (day of week, name), number of minutes, as well as a dollar total, and a month/year (actually it is derived from a date field but only filter by month/year). The report that we have working takes all the records for one month and shows what days of the week have how many minutes as well as a dollar amount from that record. Okay, this ought to be a simple one, but I'm really puzzled. In layout Mode, I'm "Viewing" Graphical Rulers along the top and side, and determining how large a frame I want to use for a new database. I'm viewing the rulers in "Inches" at the moment, and I'm in 100% mode according to the display at the lower left of the window. So . . . why does an "inch" on the ruler measure only about 3/4 of an inch on my actual computer screen? -- I'm measuring it with a physical ruler. I note that Centimeters are similarly shrunken. I am attempting to create a Help system using layouts. I am using one layout with several Subject headings and below them the respective help text. These headings also have object names attached so when I go to a particular object name, its suppose to go to a particular subject heading within the layout. so far, this is not working. It merely goes to the top of the layout. Example: Go to [layout name] Go to Object [Object Name] NOTE: Even if it was working, I haven't been able to figure out a way to use a variable field of some type in the second command to make it more flexible. Someone please help me before I punch through my monitor. I have created a table layout and enabled reorderable and resizable columns. Yesterday everything worked fine. Today none of the columns will resize. Even if I right-click and type in a resize value nothing happens. Please help. What is causing this? What update do I need to run? What registry value do I need to change? Who do I need to call? My columns are on lockdown. If I end up having to do a restore on this file will I lose any design changes that I have made since yesterday because they are extensive.

In our studio, we need coordinators and supervisors to get a good birds-eye view of all scenes per episode. Our notes for any particular shot vary drastically - some are just a quick sentence, while others are paragraphs. Sometimes there's one note and sometimes 12. When we add new notes for the animators, we hit an "add note" button - which basically creates a new record in our notes table so it appears in the portal we set up per shot. I created a new database which contains a total of three fields. Two of these fields contain a drop down menu, while the third is a date field. When either of the two drop down menus have changed a new date should appear within the date field. The first drop down menu contains the shipping time, while the second is the method of shipping, UPS, Fedex etc. Could someone please point me in the right direction as to how to get this to work? Is there any way to have T-squares off by default in layout mode? Or at the very least, to have the on/off status saved with the layout? I'll turn them off, close the file, reopen the file, and the T-squares are back when I go into layout mode. (these are hosted files, not local; not sure if that makes a difference)

Hi all, I've been able to keep a field generated list in the order i want by using hints on this post, the thing is that when using the list in another table via a link, (or even in the same table) the text doesn't auto complete, actually the feature turns off. basically i'm set this way: "JobTitle" field "index"field(to setup the order)number from 01 to XX "Calculatedindex" field(using Remplace2 ( 10^index - 1 ; "9" ; " " ) (sorry french application version here) The list is generated using JobTitle & CalculatedIndex, sorted by 2nd field. I've been designing a filemaker pro 9 database on a mac and will be moving it onto a server soon. Yet, when I was testing my database on a windows computer I ran into a snag. I have a button that changes the view of the current layout to view as a table, but when I click on it I got a dialog box that says "Do you wish to save this change with the layout?"(btw, I am in browse mode). I never got it when I was on my mac, so... I'm wondering how to go about fixing it, because I don't want it to come up every time I click the button to change views. Thanks - Jeff

I'm working with a columnar layout with Sub-Summary parts for a city listing directory of business contacts. The layout displays contact information, grouped by the contacts' cities of residence. Unfortunately, I have several dangling city headings where the heading and Sub-Summary part occur towards the bottom of the page. I have a landscape layout where all content fits within the landscape border in layout mode. If I try to print it as a pdf or look at it in print preview, it cuts off a little on the right. Its not an issue of it trying to print in letter mode. if i view it in preview mode, i can see how the border is wider on the right than the left, but i don't see how to change that. in layout mode i can't change the width of the object body. Sometimes in layout mode the lines cut where the problem is, but when i select landscape mode in pagesetup, it goes back to everything fitting properly. what factoid am i missing here?

Hi, I have a solution built on a two-file separation model where the user wants to store the images as non-referenced images inside the FMP 9 data file. There will be thousands, then tens of thousands of these images, over time. They're not high-res but will average around 100-300k a piece. My question - which I'm sure has been asked before but which I can't find, sorry - is, will this slow down, make unstable or have any other negative effect on the database? Anyone got any experience of this? The solution will be initially hosted on FMP 9 client for testing then will move to Server 9 very soon, so it's really for Server. Thanks, Pat

I seem to remember somebody asking whether you could make adding a new record into a portal, the "first row" of the portal rather than the last... Is there a way to have a field determine which layout is displayed? I have a FM9 db that has a table with data that needs to be on the same table, but depending on the data, ought to be displayed using different layouts. As it is, if I have all records shown, as I scroll thru the records, they are all displayed on the current layout (of course). But is there are way to have a field determine the layout, so that when scrolling thru all records, each record will display using the appropriate layout? Thanks, Michael

I am using a a dropdown list to show the surname field from a table containing thousands of names and addresses. The value list specifies the surname as the first field and also displays a second field which is first name. For some reason if there are people with the same surname, then only one instance of this name is shown in the drop list despite there being different firstnames!!! I cannot understand why if they are different records, that Filemaker excledes them? Any help appreciated that would enable me to show all records in these drop lists!!

Hi. I posted this about a year ago and no one had any solutions. I gave up, but I need to revisit the issue again. I am trying to "scrape" html source via the web viewer using the following script. Set Field [Patient::Source; GetLayoutObjectAttribute ("Reach" ; "Content")] "Reach" is the webviewer object name This works perfectly when run within filemaker, but when I run it over IWP (where I need it to run), the target field only displays the URL of the webviewer, rather than the source code.
