At the moment we're having a module Mail/fax to send an email, when you send an email however, it goes to your email client and send it through there, is there maybe (plugin / script) that can do this automatically with the right SMTP settings? Ok, this seems like it would be so simple. I have a tab with different buttons on it to signify different searches. I have these buttons named through the Object window. I have done this so I can pass the Object Name, using Get(ActiveLayoutObjectName), through a script parameter. The object name would then be used as a search criteria that would be inserted in the script by the script step Insert Calculated Result. I am trying this solution so that I might only create on script for all the searches. My hope was that when the named button is pressed, the name will be pick-up by the script parameter but it is not happening. Any suggestions would be much …

Okay, take a look at this file. If you press search button enter a value in the field Type/Shape and then look at the Modifier field next to it. It is meant to be a conditional value list. It does not work if I set it up as such unless I change the table for the layout to dieline usage. I need my found set to be shown on the Preview Layout which is based on the Dielines table. This means I can not show my found set there. Can someone tell me how to fix this. I can fix either problem, but can not fix both. Hello I have a small database I use in my class. The layout contains general information about a student as well as 3 photos. I want to be able to produce a report (which I already have constructed) with the student’s information on it as well as one of the photos I select from the three. How do I check or select any one of the 3 photos on the layout and it be the one that prints out on the report. I trying to create a statement to email out to my customer every month. and what i have on my layout [part setup] are: Header, Body, Trailing Grand Summary and Footer. The problem I'm having trouble with is in my Trailing Grand Summary i have 1 field for "Statement Total". If my customer has 10 outstanding invoices past due the invoices all shows but my total is always on page 2. i still have a lot of room to have all the outstanding invoices and statement to show on 1 page. So I'm trying to do this thing that's very similar to hi-lighting rows in a portal. Basically I'm trying to make a calculated field that looks like this If ( SubCategory ≠ "Main" ; Whitebox ; "" ) where Whitebox is a graphic of a white box and the result of the calculation is a container. I'm trying to put this field on top of another field so that if SubCategory is "Main" the bottom field shows, otherwise it's covered by a white box. Now, I've done this exact same technique before and had it work. In the solution that I am working on, I will be tracking alot of documentation. I have a fear of storing numerous PDFs in container fields in the application because it might bloat based on file size and become slow. Is there a trend in creating a separate file for storing graphics / pdfs / etc... that would be linked to a main file in order to keep from overloading the main file? What are some rules of thumb here?

I have read some questions regarding Webviewers and PDFs. I have noticed that when I drag and drop a PDF only the icon shows up and that when I use "Insert Object", that OCCASIONALLY, the actual PDF will show up. Is there a trick to getting the snapshot of the PDF to show up in a container field? And how does it differ in Windows from Mac? ( I use both)

Hello, I am creating a solution that requires the user to print a map from the Webviewer inside of a Print routine, so that, essentially, the map is printed in the right order in a stack of other documents. I have no problem creating formulas, etc, to get the maps I need, but do you have to trigger a print function using Javascript or is there a way to do this with the "Send Event" function? What are some good approaches? I am using FMP8.5 Advanced. Thanks...er...in advance... :)

I need help to create list based off of a selection in a field. For instance. If an employee selects that a client is "confirmed by phone" I want it to populate that record in a list on another page layout that I create. Or if an employee selects "confirmed by email" it should populate another list. I have a few other selections to, but that is the idea. Thank you!!!

I have a container field that I use to store REFERENCES to pdf files. When I try to display these pdfs using the Web Viewer, it won't. When I insert files directly (rather than as a REFERENCE) using "Insert File", it works fine. How, then, do I tell Web Viewer to display the pdf linked to the REFERENCE stored? Thanks in advance!

Hi all, I have searched far and wide to no avail... can anyone confirm for me that there is no simple way to sort a value list descending instead of ascending numeric or alphabetical? It's a relational value list that just uses one relationship, and even if I sort the appropriate field descending in the relationship, the value list still appears ascending. We have sort options up to wazoo for everything else; am I just missing something here? Thanks in advance for any assistance!

I need to help our Filemaker designer with some new function in Filemaker 8. He's designing the database on a Macintosh computer, and it is using custom menus. However... The ability to cut, copy, and paste by using the keys Shift-Delete, Ctrl-Insert, and Shift-Insert don't work with custom menu's when the database is accessed from a PC. Since he design's everything from a Mac, he does not know how to program in any feature that uses the Insert key. Can anyone give him some hints on how to program this from his Mac? So far he's just given up and doesn't think it can be done. (Hence why I am posting here)

I have been using a portal for a number of years now and all has worked well. The portal brings in records based on a match between two files on the "ParticipantID" field. I have added a second match field and setup a new relationship with the "ParticipantID" as the primary match and "AcademicYear" as a secondary match. The match fields are of the same type. This relationship brings the correct number of records into the same portal but repeats the data from the first portal record in each of the subsequent. portal records. Any thoughts regarding this problem will be much appreciated............Ray

I'm using the Format As Boolean option for a numeric flag value, with the displayed values being simply "Yes" and "No". I defined a value list so the user can make their Yes/No selection. Currently, the options that are shown to the user are "1 = Yes" and "0 = No" -- and everything works fine. However, I would like to offer simple "Yes" or "No" choices. Is there a way to define the value list to display only the words but still set the numeric field without having to define a table to hold the choices? Thanks for any help.

I'm having difficulty printing a layout with a webviewer pointing to a PDF. On the screen, it renders fine. Beautifully, in fact. Does exactly what I want. However, when I try to print a hardcopy, all I get is a blank rectangle. I've tried this with both a local PDF, and a PDF from Adobe's website. Nada in both cases. HTML renders fine and prints fine, but I'm looking to do PDFs with the intention of including frequently-updated, high-resolution vector images as part of a spec sheet database. Can someone confirm if this is indeed typical behavior of FM 8.5 on WinXP, or if I just have something messed on my end. Thanks!

I want to control access to tabs using scripts. Is there a way to hide the tab controls so a user can't click on them by mistake? I have shrunk the controls down to their minimum size and changed the text color to match the background so they are not visible. I've also tried to put an invisible button or a solid graphics box over the tabs, but the tab controls continue to "come through" and are clickable. The button or graphic is non-transparent and I moved it to the foreground also. I think the real problem is that I don't really know how to hide a field in FileMaker. Thanks

I have documents to fax and need to have a face sheet with "to and from data" along with lots of legal mumbo-jumbo. Each following page needs to have the office address at the top and senders name at the bottom and of course, data in between I planned on using a Title Header for the face sheet page and Headers and Footers for the data at the top and botton of each page with the Body in between for the records I want to transmit. I created an entry form for data and my wife (who uses Filemaker Pro) for her work decided she wanted to see a spreadsheet rows and columns display for a while. Now we cannot seem to restore the data entry form I set up that has client information all on one page (there are so many fields, one has to scroll right a lot to enter data and to do searches). Only way I can get to that is to go into Form View and I'm expected to edit the entry form in that mode, not do data queries or display records. Over time I have made frequent use of the FMP labels wizard to create labels layouts using Avery A4 Australian labels. (and yes, the page set up is set to A4) Recently I have had the problem of some labels not printing, even though the layout looks fine in preview mode. I have been able to resolve the issue on a couple of occasions by creating a new layout. I have no idea why this solves the problem because I haven’t done anything different. I'm trying to create a database to track customer repairs for my company. So far I have created a customers table (similiar to a contacts style), and a defectives table (for each defective item). What I would like to do is to have the defective items for each customer to be displayed in a portal below the contact information (which I somewhat have worked out). I'm using a unique customer number to link in the defective items for that customer. I'm sure this is a straightforward request, but I'm unable to find any post that addresses this requirement. I've created a standalone runtime solution that is accessed via CD-ROM. The solution has portal that filters a result set based upon several criteria selected by the user. I've set up a button beneath the portal that prints "records being browsed". Requirement: I'd like for the end-user to be able to print only the output of their filtered criteria. What I get is 6 blank pages and 2 pages with half the screen printed. I appreciate any help within this regard.

Is it possible to create buttons that are functional in preview mode? I've been searching this forum but can't seem to find an answer. The reason I want to use preview mode is for the sub-summaries and sliding objects/shrinking fields. These don't work in browse mode, so I need to preview. However, I can't seem to enable any buttons/scripts while in preview mode (such as a button in a portal row to display the contents of the related record). How do others handle this type of scenario? When an edit box field has more text that can be viewed within it's boundaries, if you click on the field, the information expands to show all of the text. However, when you do this, the contents of the field are also editable. I am concerned that my users might accidentally delete or alter the information--perhaps even without realizing that they did. Is there some way to make all of the text visible while still keeping the field protected? I don't want to just make it read only because the users should have access to create and edit this information. I simply want to only allow editing from a custom "edit" layout to avoid mistakes. Hi I have a portal refresh problem. I unchecked :Reset Scrollbar when exiting record option. I also enter new records in the portal fields. Since the portal row changes while adding a new row, before adding, I save that portal row number in a globa field. I have a layout that contains a filtered list of results. In this example, it is a quoter database. I have user preferences table that is related to one table instance of quotes to list items based on user filter settings (active quotes, closed quotes, and quote date range) My boss is being picky, and complained about not being able to use the arrow keys (shesh, make everyone happy by giving users the ability to use the scroll wheel, and the boss wants to use arrow keys!) Has anybody else encountered a problem where a drop down list appears as wide as my screen? I have checked every thing I can think of and I can't seem to solve this problem. The field is in a portal that I use to connect a parts inventory to a product. The idea is to click on the vendor part number field in the portal, have it display a part name, then automatically fill out the name of the manufacturer, part description, price, etc. When I click on the field it works as expected, but the drop down list doesn't appear like it does in the invoices database where I've done the same thing. Hey Folks, I searched around and coudn't find an answer to this. Displaying FedEx results, I get a lot of 'non-value-added' header information (FedEx logo, etc.) It would be perfect if there were a way to tell WebViewer to scroll down, say, 100 pixels upon loading of the page, so I could save my screen real esate for what I actually need to see. Is there any way to do this? (through a plug-in or otherwise) I have read other posts that discuss grabbing the HTML code of a particular URL and then parsing this. Quick question, Has anyone ever used a timer for dialog boxes? I have a system that allows the user a second chance to print a receipt, but a lot of the time the user doesn't reply to the dialog. I want to set a time to how long the dialog box can be displayed. I know I can do this through a layout with start/finish times, but just wondered if there are other avenues like a timer.

I am new to FMP, but have done quite a bit of database design work in MS Access. In access I could create a "subform" (i.e. - portal) that had both vertical and horizontal scroll bars. I could even "freeze" columns so during horizontal scrolling I would be able to see the key field - for example a part number - and its corresponding "technical specifications". I have tried the same type of arrangement with a portal, but it appears as if it is severely limited in its ability to handle more columns of data then what fit in the portal. Am I missing something? Is their a different way to accomplish what I am trying to do?

I have a layout that has a field that they enter Y or N in. I want to duplicate this layout and when they select the layout (from the layout selector on the left) it will only display records that have a Y in the field. I've searched the forums, but have not yet found a resolution to my "text-wrapping" problem... : The file options DO have "roman" line-breaking checked, yet the "wrapping" continues; displaying text in an off-kilter alignment. Fields that do not have enough text wrap to a second line appear with the correct horizonal alignment. This is a new FM8 solution for Windows XP displaying data that was provided to me in a *.xls format, which I opened FM8A and then imported into the new solution. My apologies if I've missed a previous post resolving this issue.

Silly question, but I'm stuck. I've got a container field, set as global, with 2 repetitions. Each will have a different image (jpeg). I copy & paste an image into the field. All works great. Once I exit the database and re-open it, the field is again empty. What am I missing? How do I get my image to stick in the field? :P

I have dabbled with the separation model a bit. I could see using the webviewer to create an integrated "check for update" option. A dialog could show the user their current version with the web viewer showing them the most current version and provide a download link.....all on the same window. I have played around a bit and it seems to work like a charm. The main file (with logic and scripts, etc) is simply downloaded via the viewer. What is interesting is that there does not seem to be a "trail" of the download (since the viewer doesnt use a dedicated browser). Any thoughts on this? Greg

I have a company record which has a sales exec field. I want to force users to select an appropriate sales exec from a value list (a pull down menu). I have implemented the value list and pull down menu, but I don't want to store the person's actual name in the company table. I want to store the ID attached to the name from the sales exec table. I would also like the sales exec field in the company table to display the sales exec name based on the id. So far, the only thing I have been able to accomplish is storing the person's name. But this could pose problems down the road if someone's name is misspelled etc. Can any one point in the appropriate diretion to solve this …

I am new to FMP coming from a Microsoft Access background. In an Access report you can create a "layout" with a text field that has a property setting of "can grow". This allows the vertical size of the text to grow to account for the fact that in one record you may have 25 characters and in another you may have 200. The only thing I can find that is similar in FMP is the "sliding" feature - although it appears the sliding feature has a significant limitation in that you must initial set the size of the field to hold the largest amount of text entered and it will then shrink as necessary. Lets assume the msaccess steps are: 1)create an ERD 2)build tables 3)create queries based on tables 4)display queries or tables in a form. There may be a very simple solution to this - but I can't seem to figure it out. I have a layout that has a field with 10 or so check boxes. In another layout in the same database, I want to display this field as an Edit box field (i.e., not check box), and display the values one after the other, seperated by commas (or soemthing like that), instead of the default, one line per value. Gurus at Large, I am working with invoices containing serialized products. I have two tables of data that should be identical, but unfortunately they're not. So I need to compare the two tables and and match up the records. Both tables have several levels of granularity; ex. invoice year, invoice month, invoice day, invoice number, part number, serial number. The problem is that in one table, a serial number for a part might have a leading "S", while in the other table the "S" has been lopped off. I've spent enough hours on this to know that I'm not "seeing the forest for the trees." Attached is a sample file. I want Results::RecProducts_c to equal the value list "RPs". Hi Everyone, First post here. (FM 5.5) I have a portal on a layout for 'Tasks'. I have a script to create a new task, which performs an external script in the Task file "Create Task" and the script is supposed to end up in the portal, with the new record having a task name of "Untitled Task". My intention is to have the new task selected so that the user will know that they have to add a name for the new task. My script is not highlighting the new task. Hi. I'm having a little bit of a problem with my first Filemaker file. I am switching from Lotus Approach Millenium. I'm trying to set up an invoice program. In Approach there is something called a repeating panel. You can place a repeating panel on your form and then you can add fields from tables into the form. The panel can display as many lines as you want and then if more lines are needed it scrolls down. I normally set up my repeating panel to include productID, Qty, Description, Cost and Total. I've been creating web-enabled databases for a school over the past year. They've been simple in that there's only one user who looks at the data from the web - the guest user. I'm just stumped on this one. I have a portal that displays a calculation field. The result of the field is a container. The Problem: The field does not display its contents when it is in the first row of the portal. All other rows display just fine and as soon as I add a row above it then displays properly. I have a Tab Control object into my layout. One tab is Credit Card and the other is PayPal. Of course, credit card details show up in the CC tab and PayPal details show up in the PayPal tab, however, people only pay with 1 method. So what I'd like to do is be able to have the CC tab up front on records where payment type is CC, and PayPal tab come up front on records where PayPal was used. Possible? My application involves a moderately complex layout with over 150 different fields on nested tab panels. For months now, I've fought flaky tab settings. Going into and out of Set Tab Order (e.g., to add a new field) causes FileMaker to very often drop the first tab I had defined, which wreaks havoc on runtime operation, of course. Many times, I've had to clear all tabs and reset all my sequences -- and even then I have to watch FileMaker like a hawk to see that each tab is being retained. Hi, I have a drop down list in my invoice section that allows me to select the day the service will be provided. The drop down list takes the data from a field called Date and i would like the drop down list to only show the dates that has yet to come. For example, I have 52 entries in this date field which are the 52 saturdays of the year. we are 23rd feb so i would like the drop down list to show only the saturdays to be coming and not the ones that already happened... Is there a way of doing this ? I'm quite unexperienced so i would appreciate an English version of the things to do ! :-) Regards.

I have a solution that requires 15) 8.5 x 11 pages for each record. So far, all I seem to be able to create is 10 -- FM will not allow me to "pull down" or resize the layouts any larger. I could create a secondary layout for pages 11-15 but envision other issues when trying to create a single pdf and/or the bothersome solution of two print dialog boxes (one for each layout) when printing. Is there a preference or way to allow a single layout to have 15 pages rather than the 10 I am apparently being limited by? Thanks

Hi Guys, I've got a number of fields in a portal, that are displayed as drop-down lists, from various value lists as appropriate. I'm not able to select the "Auto-complete using value list" check-box for the fields inside the portal, whereas fields outside the portal can auto-complete from the value list. I don't usually have a need to auto-complete value lists from within a portal, so haven't come across this before, but my client has now decided it would be nice to do. Before telling them it isn't possible, I wanted to check that I haven't missed something glaringly obvious. Thanks in advance for your insights! Regards, Dan

Many times I add a Go to Related Record behavior to a field in a layout so I can just click on that field to view the related record. When I go into Find Mode, though, this field remains a "button" although it doesn't do anything at all in Find Mode. I can't enter any data into this field to Find on, though, because it switches the cursor like a button and when I click it tries to activate the related record...which of course there isn't one and nothing happens. How can I disable this in Find Mode so that I can still search on this field, yet be able to use it to view related records in Edit mode? Any info would be great. thanks!

I have a layout that diplays records in a list. The "small" black bar to the left of the record is the only thing that tells me that it is the current record. I'd like to, via a calculation, be able to change the color or bold the text of fields on the layout for the current record to make it a lot more obvious which is the current record. I've got a FM system consisting of multiple FM files and many different layouts. I like to maximize open windows inside of FM application, but many of the layouts/windows that I work with cause my window to fit to the size of that layout or something and I have to re-maximize all the time. It's very aggravating. Is there a way I can make my opened windows inside FM stay maximized at all times..: Any information would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

I've read the posts that are related, and reindexed the fields. unindex, get out of program, back in program re-index. I have a portal (in Lab dip tracking table) with auto entry look up from another table (Color Table). When I make a selection color code and color name a ghost code appears. If I select again the correct color is displayed but isn't saved (although the ghost code saves)?? Please help. I am trying to allow several drop down/pop up colors to be added to each record.

I'm publishing my database with the web viewer, and I have lots of different layouts that all use the same menu I created for users, but I don't see how you can make one menu that all the layouts will sync with so that if i want to change something in the menu i don't have to change ALL the layouts. OK, I am FINALLY moving a fairly involved solution from FM6 to FM8.5 and in the process consolidating about 8 files into a single file with 8 tables instead. For the most part I am getting just how much better and easier it is to do what I need to do, but even with dozens of great workflow improvements, I still have 2 things are still eluding me. I have a form layout that uses 4 tabs, with some fields common to each tab. I want to use a script that involves copying the content of a field, but whenever I use the Copy script command it changes the tab selected and copies from the version of the field that is on that tab, rather than the tab that is already selected before the script starts. The tab that it goes to is not even the default tab for the layout. I have created a brand new script consisting only of the Copy command, and it still does this. I can't understand why. Can anyone help please?

Is it possible to add a table from a joined database onto a form and select items from the table to be filled into the form? For instance, if I want to let users see a list of stamps in the table, then have them click on the stamp name or number to add it to their collection and have it fill in the information on the form. I hope someone can help me with a script that I'm trying to write. While in my Customer database I would like to select the account number of the current record then open my Orders database and copy the account numer into the Account No. field. I tried the following script: Copy [select; Customers::Acct No.] Open File ["ORDERS"] Go to Layout [original layout] New Record/Request Paste [select; ORDERS::ACCOUNT NO.] but all it does is open a new record in Orders and places the cursor in the Account No. field. I know I'm overlooking something, but I don't know what. I've tried different things with no luck. Thanks.

I have a task-list printout using Sub-Summaries by Status. Each occurrence of the sub-summary part starts on a new page. For instance, first I'll have the Status: Complete sub-summary, followed by its records, then a new page, then the Status: Waiting sub-summary, followed by its records. The only thing checked in the Sub-Summary dialog is "allow part to break across page boundaries." The layout setup is specified as View: List only. It's been a while since I've used printouts with sub-summaries (i.e. FM6). Is this just how it is or am I missing something? Thanks for any suggestions.
