    Hi All, This is my first post on this forum. Is it possible to get a list to pop-up based on another list. What I have is as follows: Manufacturer eg Sony which in turn has many models So, if Sony is choosen from a pop-up list (Manufacturers)then another pop up appears (models) with just all the models for that particular manufacturer.   2. I posted this a few weeks ago but really had a chance to look into the problem so lets see if I can be a little more descriptive. The problem: Blank records are being created in a database(this should not be happening). Background: I have sorted through some things and found that the relationship between this database1 and database2 is an(=) and has the checkbox "allow creation of records into this table via the relationship" under database2. However when I uncheck the box I am no longer able to use the dropdown box (as in it becomes unclickable)on the database1 to see the files of Database2.     Hi, I'm pretty new at filemaker and I am having troubles with scripting. On my 'Main Menu' layout I have 3 'menu buttons'. Each button is a general category of the 3 areas of the database. Each category has different layouts depending on what you want to do. What I want to do is when you click a 'Menu button' a set of 'layout buttons' will appear. The 'layout buttons' will re-direct you to a layout you select to add records. Example: 'menu buttons' = production, quality control, and inventory. I want to view these htm files in the webviewer in Fmpro, however, I do not manage to get the correct URL in order to get these files into my webviewer. Every manufacturer has a couple kind of papers, and the papers have various weights. Its should bee possible, in table A field 1, to choose all of the manufacturer.     Hi, Hopefully this will make sense and be easy to answer. I am creating a schedule in FM for our employees. Due to the nature of our business, there can be any number of employees on for a given shift (from 1-20 people), as well as multiple shifts per day. I would like to set everything up like a spreadsheet, each person in it's own field. I would like to have, by default, 4 spaces for personnel with the ability to add more as necessary for that particular day.     I know I should know how to do this, especially since I've done it in FM 5.5. I have a portal displaying on a page. I want to be able to hit a button and add a record to the portal. Previously in 5.5, I had relationship set up which was a field with a "1" in it relating to a field which I would do a set field to through the relationship to that field. This is odd, but would create a new record and enter the data I specified in the set field every time I hit the button. I can't get this to work in 8.5. I have the string that will map two sets of information and show the driving directions in the web viewer(by google maps).   15. Hello, I'm having a problem with a custom portal sort. The sort is based on a value list that is made up of related records from another table. I have created a table of Shakepearean productions. On the main layout is a portal that contains a list of actors and the characters that they play. For example in a production of Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' I have a list of actors playing various roles including Hippolta, Oberon, Theseus, Titania etc. I want to show the actors that play the most important roles first so I have another table where each record contains a role name and a play id that is used to link it with records in the table of production…

    I'm working on my first FM DB and am trying to setup a DB that will pre-populate a field based upon what is entered into another field. For example, I want the DB to fill out the name and address fields based upon what is entered into the 'type' field. So, if I enter "Water" in this field I'd like all of the address information automatically entered, but remain editable should I wish to make changes manually. My tiny FM app only has one DB. It seems like it would be pretty easy but I can't get it to work in preview mode. I eaither can't get it to cover the whole space or it will not show up because some of it is not in the body.   20. Can anyone tell me whether it is possible (and how to do it, of course -)) to insert links into a FMP database that then bring up a particular point in the document. At the moment it's a word doc - about 25 pages long with explanations of the rather technical clinical terms that crop up in the database and it would be very helpful to provide a 'help' button next to these terms to minimise frustrations on the user side. I've looked at inserting a container field but can't see how to get to a particular sentence in the document. Any help/ suggstions would be gratefully received.     Using FM Adv. 8.5 I have two files: UI_file.fp7 doclib.fp7 I want to provide users a way to assign publishers and authors to a document from a list of each. The list should dwindle based on already assigned authors or publishers. In the UI file I have a pop-up with portal showing the list of not-related publishers (for example). This is working and is based on a List() function calc in the doclib file. As this number of rows in the portal grows I'd like to be able to filter this list using a VL (A-Z). The items are computers with unique serial numbers but have non-unique attributes such as family, model, memory size , hd size, processor speed, condition grade, and operational status.     Hi, I currently have a portal filtered by 3 different criterias that go from global fields on the parent side to the child side. The interface and the data is also seperated out into seperate files. The globals reside on in the interface file. So the filtered portal is working but the user also wants the ability to perform finds. Since the filtered portal can not be used to perform finds because of the multiple key relationship, I am assuming that i have to have them do a find on another layout that has direct access to the other data correct? Has anyone ever created a filtered portal with the capability to do finds as well? Any recommendations or tips?

When I change information in my valuelist field (in a portal) my calculation fields not updating unless I click on a blank spot on the record.     I've attached a sample file to show in general what I'm up against. So let's say you have two tables, the parent table is books and the child table contains all the proposed titles. So you have a layout showing records from the parent/books table with a portal showing all the related records in the child/titles table. Now, what I need to do is have the ability to select which title is current so we can retain the list of all proposed titles but track which one we are currently going with.     Hi dumbo question (its the simple things in life that are challenging): I have a layout with a header that has my "Navigation Buttons" that you need to navigate my app. The Body has the fields. The navigation buttons are set not to print thru the sliding/printing dialog. When I print a record, a large gap is now left on the paper at the top where the header is. Nothing is in it as i told the nav buttons not to print. Question: Can I avoid that gap, ie not print the header at all? I've got one for ya: Setup - Two Databases (Employee and Bug) - Records in the Bug db have an Employee field - This field uses a Value List that looks at the Employee field in the Employee db via the "Use value list from another file" Value List option - The Employee db has a field called Status that is marked either "Current" or "Former". In several layouts and Value Lists, the Employee db shows only "Current" employees by scrips that run a find for "Current". Question Can I have the Value List in the Bug db show only "Current" employees so I don't have to maintain two Employee Tables in both databases?

The problem is, There are too many buttons, valuable space is wasted on these buttons Currently, I have removed some buttons for performing finds.     Just winding down a FM project. The idea is to spin it offf as a stand alone application PC & Mac. So, after doing all the development on my Mac, I tested it on the PC. Looks terrible. Seems the PC doesn't come out of the box with Helvetica. The entire interface is helvetica.. Arrgh! Is there a best choice for a font that works cross platform?     I'm using a database wich intends to serve as correspondance (mails letters etc) aplication. It was incoming documentation and outgoing documentation.   51. I'm trying to set up a check box and timestamp feature to the database so we know when things moved from graphics into production or in production to shipping, like that. What I'm trying to do is when one of the checkboxes is clicked it updates a timestamp for that specific job (Going from graphis to production). I've tried a few things and I can't seem to get it, all my timestamps update together. I know I'm missing a step in here to seperate them but keep them on one page. Help?

The reason I'm asking is because when I made the current database I'm using, I just put every field in one table, and now I'm wondering if it would have been more prudent to divide my fields into several tables.     I have a script that populates a field with HTML and then web viewer will display the page. However, there is a slight delay in the web viewer displaying the HTML as it should - so it displays the HTML as text in the web viewer window. While it only displays it for a half-second, it will be annoying to my clients (as it has been annoying for me). I have tried to freeze the window until the very end of the script, and then I do a refresh, but it still shows up. It also happens as I scroll between records (as the HTML field is a global field) - so is this just a web viewer glitch? Any information is appreciated. Thanks, Tony

In the Routing table it is a list of parts and in the Routing Data Table contains steps these are master files that are for initial building of the traveler tables. These are like MASTER RECORD for each part number. The Traveler table get its the information first by typing in the work order pulling the Item number then based on that number it pulls routing header information from the routing table. Information is changed in the traveler table it is not reflected into the Routing Table.   55. I'm creating a 'standard' set of buttons to go on all layouts (navigation, return to menu etc). In the past I have simply added the graphic elements or images to each layout. However, on this particular project some users will be viewing the database (as a Filemaker client) over a VPN link, hence speed is a major factor. If I use global fields to store the graphics and use these fields as my buttons, will this increase the speed for the users? I guess what is mean is, does Filemaker 'cache' images in much the same way as a web browser? Anyone else experimented with this and have any test results to share? Thanks

Here's my question: Most Dell mouses nowdays come with a small middle "scroll" section, that allows users to easily scroll through documents. However, in Filemaker this can cause BIG problems. For example, if you are inputting data into one record, and accidently hit the middle scroll on the mouse, you could be entering data into the wrong record, and not realize it, because you had accidentally scrolled through several records records without realizing what had happened.     Hi there, I'm using a portal in my database which I wish to automatically populate with some data (roughly the same data is looked at for each record for which the portal exists). This data may be wanted to be deleted or changed by whoever is entering it however. I do have a value list containing everything I need to be in this portal. Would the proper way to go about doing this be make a script which, on creation of each record, populates the fields which the portal is drawing from with the auto-enter data?     Hello All! I have a portal loacted on one of my files. This file is called "Addressbook" The Portal is supposed to be gettings it's information from the table in the file "ToDo" I have created a link going through the "Task" field joining up the two tables. Everything works fine when i click on the portal to add a new reccord. BUT, i don't want to do this. I wan't to go into the file "ToDo" and create a new reccord. But, when i do this, it does not appear on the Portal. How can i get it so that it will display all of the reccords found on that table? Thanks.

  69. When I run a script the tab view changes....I might be on the fourth tab when I start but when the script completes it will refresh to the first tab.....can't find any script commands to counteract this... thanks, Paul

    Ok so this is a two pronged question... prong 1 - When looking at the layout ruler...be it pix, inch, whatever, How do you change where that ruler starts for the layout... I ask this because I am an new employee and working with some existing files... some of the layouts start @ 0 some dont... how can i change this? prong 2 - in the same file i am trying to change the print margins for a layout... they are all set at .25...Now this is where i get concerened..I get the limitation warning for this configuration and i cant close the box... ie it pops up..i close it it pops up again immediately!! i get stuck in this loop and have to force quit out... I was completely taken by the Google maps web viewer and how simple it was to add a viewer to a layout, match the Google address fields to my database address fields and have a map for every person's address in my membership database (being able to switch the view to satellite was a bonus - it showed that address USPS said was undeliverable was now a vacant lot :-). It did get me thinking about another useful addressing tool, - looking up zip+4 zip codes from the USPS website. The task is virtually the same - USPS wants three fields of information street, city and state, just like google maps. Unfortunately FM doesn't automatically give you the USPS field names to match …

The db I'm developing is for a gallery, so includes contact information for artists and detailed entries for their works. 1.     Hi All, I'm using FMP 8 Adv to create a new database that uses portals and have found a bug I had not experienced before. When entering data in a portal field, with a transparent background, all editable portal fields turn gray. The user ends up entering and editing black text on a gray background. I have been unable to fix this, except by adding a background color to the field. I don't want background color, since it I have alternating color bars in the portal. Is there any way to fix this bug? I am running 8.0v3 on OS X 10.4.7. I have not tried it on the PC yet. I welcome all suggestions. Thanks, - Miles

    I have a portal (lower half) and I would like to have the data shown in the portal always sorted by what exists in the "Title" field (upper left). What I would like to have is a search function the moment I commit to an entry in the Title field, so that it shows me in the portal below, other items with the same or similar names. I can then select the item row in the portal and have the upper half of the screen populated with that record. OR select nothing in the portal and start a new record using that title I entered, and hit the "New Entry" button to save it.   75. I am having problems getting JPG's to show up when I use HTML from a field in the web viewer. I tried using "data:text/html,....[field name]" as my source in web viewer, and it will load the HTML, but it won't recognize any jpeg's that I have in my FMP home directory. When I load the same html code from a file on my hard drive into WV, the jpegs work. I can get a successful result if I load the images onto my web server and put the full path name in the tag, but I don't want to have to be connected to the Internet for this to work. We have over 50 questions that asked people to choose A, B, or C. We need to be able to list all the products that make up ABC product below the ABC Product Description.   82. Hi everyone, this is my first post. Here at work they forced us to change from Mac to PC (using FPro 7). We had a bunch of databases developed on the Mac. They work on the PC except for horrible printing problems. Most of the time what looks OK on screen prints out scaled way differently, with lots of stuff chopped off. My experience is that the first time I preview a report it looks OK. Then I print it, it comes out all screwed up and afterwards the preview on screen is all jagged and screwed up.     Lets say I have 4 tables. Names, Items, a Join table, and a global table for an interface. The basic relationships are Names to Join, Join to Items, and then an interface table with global fields in it to Names. There is a value list created that shows all the related records from Names to Join. In the interface table I have a global field that I want to use a match key to find all records in Name that have a certain item number.   84. I have FileMaker Server 7 running on a Windows box at a remote office. In one of the databases I created a portal with a sort order that is controlled by a value list. The value list contains the following: Annual Dec Sep Jun Mar I can login to the FileMaker server, open the local FileMaker client and view the portal with the correct sort order. I can also access the database through a VPN using my Mac FileMaker client and see the portal in the correct order.   86. Is there a way to specify as opposed to averaging (layout/arrange/distrib) the spacing between selected objects? I'm working on recreating a layout that displays small grouped tables in various areas of the page. I've kinda figured out that if I do the math and then position and lock the top and bottom objects in the group I can get pretty close to getting the space I want between my objects vertically. But that's time consuming, not exact, and that doesn't work horizontally since all the text objects are various widths. This is the calculation field I am using" [color:red]outputtext = GetLayoutObjectAttribute ( "webbox" ; "content" ) as a TEXT result. As a text field I get no resulting HTML.     Hi everyone -- in using Brian Dunning's excellent Chartmaker Pro 7 in my recently upgraded FM Advanced 8.5, I have noticed a lot of weirdness in trying to set field and rep widths. For instance, when Chartmaker calls for a rep width of 1 pixel, I cannot get FMA8.5 to cooperate. I have tried to mouse-drag the primary/left-most rep to 1 px, but the object size viewer only allows to 2 px... If I try to manually enter a 60-px width for a 60-rep field, it defaults to 61 px..? I thought zooming in, a la Illustrator and other graphics apps, would afford more precise setting, but not so... Any advice, or at least a witness!?

    I've written a runtime solution that has two fields, TailNumber and SerialNumber. As it is, I have a Case calculation in the SerialNumber field so that if a user selects a particular tail number from TailNumber's pop-up list, its serial number autofills the SerialNumber field, e.g., selecting N908FX will autofill the SerialNumber field with MSN-114. The problem is, since it's a Case calculation it's "hard-coded" into the database so users can't enter new tail numbers where the serial number will autofill. So, is there a way I can get around this problem in the master file so it'll work in the runtime solution? As always, thanks in advance for your help!

I'm trying to set up a value list that uses values from a field - e.g. field1 = make of car, field2 = model, so that the value list for field2 depends on the entry (from a static valuelist) for field1. I've set up a series of global fields with all the possible values for field2 and defined a holding field as a calculation based on the value for field1. This seems to work in that the holding field correctly returns the values from the appropriate global field but it doesn't work as a valuelist in that it returns spurious values from more than one of the global fields.
