I'm and advanced beginner with Filemaker. I'm working with a database that's on a server, and am having a problem with some of my checkbox sets. There are a few, but I'll start with the simplest. I have a checkbox for whether or not a record is "active". Then I have a calculation field, whose value is 1 if the checkbox is checked, and zero if not, called "cue count active calc". Then I have a summary field for a total of that field. Sometimes the summary field displays a different total than what I know to be correct. Hi all I would like to create a layout where a field is only editable if a condition is met. The scenerio is: I have an inventory database. A stock item is of one of two types, a 'one-off' or a an item that many copies can be ordered. I would like to create an 'Order' layout that allows me to enter a purchase quantity if an item is not a 'one-off' or automatically sets the quantity as 1 if it is a 'one-off' and prevents the field from being editable. I'm sure these conditions need to be set in 'manage database'. How do I go about this? It would be nice to block data entry into the quantity field on the layout by means of ghosting or something similar. …

I would like to add a grey background without printing it. I can easily add a background color by choosing a fill color in the part...but this prints. I do not want to waste toner and a white background is usually better for prints. I am using a simple technique of creating a square, filling it with grey and making the object non-printing. I set the anchors to fill the screen no matter the zoom factor or screen size. This works but is much to tedious when dealing with many and complex layouts. Any assistance would be appreciated. I need your help. Recently I took on the task of selling over 100 items of high end photographic equipment for a widow of a professional photographer. I am striving to make this as professional an operation as possible. I decided to dive into databases to manage and hopefully automate this project. The end goal is to have a portion of my website dedicated to this sale. I have created a report that sorts based on a field called “Transmittal number.” The report page breaks before each occurrence (usually 1-3 pages) and works great except that the records are numbered and I would like the record number to reset to 1 with each new transmittal number. Had what I thought was a fairly simply setup to create: in our student database, I need to build a report to show the number of households within each zip code. So, I merrily create: * a summary field holding the COUNT of field Zip (zSum_HouseholdsByZip) * a layout based on the Household table (actually, a particular instance, holding the primary households) * a subsummary part containing the summary field (and the Zip field, as an identifier) with Zip as the break field * a couple fields in the body for filtering Then I go to find mode, find our enrolled students, sort by Zip, and switch to Preview mode. I am trying to convert a List View Layout into a Table View. Love the functionality of the Table View. Users love. However, I can't get the Column Names set. They are using the Database Field Names, which aren't very user friendly. In the Inspector, I found an entry, under Positions, for Name. However, the Table doesn't use this for the Column Name. Great functionality, but I don't want to rename the Database Fields. Any suggestions?

I am back again but not sure where to post this so i chose here since i had such great success with the other. ------ Any ways i am creating a database that will help manage animals. I currently have just one layout but need multiple layouts. I want my main lay out to have a multi page feel. For example - On the main page i want the information on the animal then another layout called Husbandry which will hold the information on feeding and such. I want to reposition the layout part handle so it is vertical rather than horizontal (so that it does not cover elements in the header that I want to work with). I know it can be done (I have done it before myself!) but I have lost/forgotten the way to do it. Hello, I created a one page report that I need to drop into a Power Point presentation. The problem is the image is fuzzy in preview mode and when I export to PDF. My friend an I are working on the same database on different computers. I created the file on my Mac, and he has been adding data on his PC. Everything looks fine when he opens the file on his computer, except that many of the fields don't fit the last few items of their corresponding value lists. I don't know if this is because the field itself shrank, or because the text size increased somehow. Does anybody have any ideas/advice? This is a problem that is fixable by manually increasing the size of each affected field on his computer, but doing this every time I update the template is getting very frustrating. I have a value list based on a related field, does anyone know of a way to add additional values to the value list that do not appear in the related field? I tried creating a new calc field using the ValueListItems function and adding additional items to it but in order for it to work properly I cannot store the calculation so I cannot base a value list on the field.

I need to but all I can rotate are the fields. In short I'm using a runtime on an ultra mobile pc (about 5" x 3" screen) and want to rotate the entire layout a 1/4 turn counter clockwise. The fields rotate but not the portals.... any ideas? Thanks!!

You guys might think I'm dumb, and you'll probably be right. It feels like I'm missing something obvious here. On one particular layout, I have a subsummary part that shows up when sorted by clients. This layout is used for shipping. It would be tremendously helpful if I could calculate how many separate subsummaries are present in a given found set, so the user could pull down as many boxes as there are clients in a given shipping list. This seems like it should be a simple thing to do but for the life of me I can't figure it out. Do I use a trailing grand summary? How do I configure this subsummary summary field? Here's what I hope is a simple one. I want to display field data from a parent record in a layout so that the user can see this information when entering data in the child. The parent information is prose, and the length of it will be highly variable. I *don't* want the user to be editing this parent information while in the child layout. I'd like to just put a textbox there and make it non-enterable so that it's clear its just for display . . . but when I do so, the *scrollbar* is rendered inoperable. Dang. Hi, I'm trying to change the colour of text between two pre-defined tags. The tags are always the same - but the number of characters between will vary example 1: Some text which will be red and revert to master style. display: Some text which [color:red]will be red and revert to master style. example 2: Some other text change the colour and revert to master style. display: Some other text [color:red]change the colour and revert to master style. Why do thin field boundaries appear when you enter any field for entry? Also fields with a transparent fill become filled with white when you enter any field. Here's what my portal looks like when nothing is selected: And here's what it looks like when I click into a cell to enter text: Please note the fine borders around all fields and the white fill that comes into the fields that should have a transparent background. I have a set of vertical lines arranged horizontally (think: fenceposts). I want to align their tops with the same imaginary horizontal line. I select them all, and click Align Top Edges, thinking this will ... well, align the tops of these lines. Instead, I am seeing them move downward a few pixels... and when I click ALign Top Edges again, they again move downward! As if I were repeatedly hitting the down-arrow key. It's like Birnam Wood creeping toward Dunsinane. Is this actually behaving as it should??

The preview shows just one page on an A4 sheet of paper, yet when I do print I get two pages, the second of which is a page with just the header. What do I need to adjust to remove this second page? Hi! I have a list in my orders' layout and arised a design problem: I need Trailing Grand Totals at the bottom of the page but FM put it directly at the end of the list. How can I define TGT to be always at the end of the page? When list is long last page contains just 1-2 lines somtimes. And the grand totals seems like lines. Using v11, in a new layout I create a rectangle that's 300 px wide and a line of the same length. Zooming in reveals that the line is one 'pixel' longer than the rectangle. In Browse Mode "adjusting to fit" the window results in the line extending past the rectangle leaving the background color showing next to the rectangle. Shorten the line to 299 and they look almost the same, but "adjusting to fit" still shows the background color to the right of the rectangle.The line must be shortened to 298 px for correct rendering. I noticed similar behavior in v10 when converting my pre-7 files, so I made all the lines one pixel short as a fix. Now, to eliminate the love…

Hi, in my solution I have a layout with a portal on it. There is a delete button for each record in the portal (the last column). Now I would like to show this button dynamically because some of the records can't be deleted. So it useless to show the delete button. I thought to use a global field and fill it with the button if delete is possible and leave it empty if not. But I'm not sure how to aacomplish that. Could someone help me? Thx by ChiSao

Hi, I'm new. A few years ago I created a layout that tracks jobs coming into our business. I did not create a customers table (did I mention I'm new at this?) Each job is created as a new record. The problem is, we have many repeat customers. Now I have thousands of records, many are from the same customers. When I export my data to Excel, I see I have many duplicate customer fields. Is there a way to get a list of distinct customer names and other related fields such as address, phone, email, etc.?

I'm trying to create an invoice using a demo file as a template which can be found at this link: http://fmforums.com/forum/showpost.php?post/309136/ I have setup tables similar to those in the demo file apart from naming convention. I have created a value list for contacts which shows both contact and contact id by using the second field option. Dear Forum - Our users are running FileMaker 9 on Windows XP and have their PCs set for various countries. FileMaker is great about displaying dates in the correct format according to the PC settings, but not currencies. Is there some way to display a number field in US currency format (1,000.00) to some users and EU currency format (1.000,00) to others in an elegant manner? Greetings all, I'm taking the first step in admitting I have a problem. I created a file navigation box and want to place it on each layout so those who like to "see and click" can navigate easily. I place this grouped box just off the page margin on the right side of the layout. I've tried locking it in place, but it slides to the right when I exit edit mode. In FMP 11, I want to make a field which affects the behaviour of another. Specifically, I have a table for income tax which includes a calculation field which automatically calculates the amount of GST (sales tax). So total in field B is 10% of field A. However, some income does not attract sales tax. I have made a field C with a drop down menu that will allow a choice of type of income - taxable or not. How can I set the database up so that choosing Taxable results in the normal calculation; and choosing Not Taxed results in a null value? I have tried Case and Validate but not getting anywhere. Hi. Just found this site! Here we go with my first post. We've recently upgraded from fmp 6 to 10. In our reports we have a 'matrix' made up of four fields with 25 repetitions. Some reports have a few entries in these fields, some have the full 25, some may have none. This is where the problems start!! These fields have borders and are set to slide up when they are blank. In the past (on fmp 6) this worked fine. Now though, if these fields are all blank, we still get the borders showing for the first row (repetition 1). Is there any way we can prevent this happening? I am working on a report that has three subsummary parts. When I run the report it comes out fine except that I would like it to not brek up a section at the end of a page. If it doesn't fit I would like that section to go to the next page. Every part has allow part to break across boundries unchecked. It doesn't seem to change when I do check any of them. I'm currently encountering a weird problem that I've never noticed before. I'm opening a database from our FMSA 8 server with 9 Advanced client and adding layout graphics to it. They work fine on my machine, but when viewed on another client, I get a square box with the text "The file cannot", instead of the image. The rest is cut off, but I'm presuming the rest says "be found". It's clear that the graphic is being referenced to its location on my computer, instead of being saved in the layout, but this has always worked before, so I'm at a loss to explain it, or more importantly, fix it. Hello hopefully somebody will be able to help me with this problem. What I need is as follows, I have created a holiday database for staff to login online and put down the holidays they want. Now when their manager logs in online they get a seperate menu screen. How do I get this screen to show the manager how many holidays they have to authorise. Experienced Access Convert due to current employer purchasing FM, needing help with what is a 30sec task in Access, but has so far consumed three hours of my life in FM. The DB I am creating is for Inventory Control. One of the aspects I am having trouble with is Storage Areas and Locations. I have in my item table ´inventory_items´ a field called ´Storage Area´ which is populated with a drop down, that pulls values from another table called ´SA´, values XYZ. I have another field ´Storage Location´, which is also a drop down, but needs to populate with values ABC if X is chosen in the previous drop down - and DEF if Y etc. My question is how the heck do I do it?

I've been a dormant FM developer, and am just having occasion to examine the Layout Script Triggers in FM10, and I am a little confused (this is a normal state for me). First off, I do not understand why there is a trigger for Layout Load, but not one for Layout Close? Next, I am not sure when the OnRecordCommit trigger actually runs. I have a value list that is populated based on two fields, one is the customer code and the other is the customer name. The problem is some customer codes are 4 numbers, some are 4 then a hyphen then 2 numbers. This creates a messy looking list: For example: 1234-10 St Mary's Hospital 5555 St Thomas 8765-22 St Victory Hospital 2233 Walter Reed My value list is based on two fields from the customer table. I have searched for this here and on the internet, and still don't find the solution. I had this working in Microsoft Access for years, now i need it in Filemaker instead. For some time now I've been using a tip from Ray Cologon to highlight rows in list view using a web viewer. Now I find that when using the trial version of FMP11 this no longer works. I'm working on a file to be used with FMTouch on an iTouch. Since this app doesn't effectively let you choose a year when entering a date field that's set up as a calendar, I need to set it up as a regular text edit field. This is all fine so far, but I also need to format the date as DD/MM/YYYY. I can do this manually under Format-->Date, but the program still only allows me to enter the date as MM/DD/YY. If I try to put in 23/12/2003, for example, I get an error message. If I enter 12/23/2003, it accepts and displays it as 23/12/2003. Hello, I have a FM database on a MacOS 10.4.11 served with Fm Server 8.0v4. The clients are also on MacOS 10.4.11 but use FM Pro 8.5. The problem is if I set the Page Setup for a layout (Paper Size, Orientation) it isn't saved with the layout. Each time I reconnect to the database and print the layout, I must change the Page Setup. The new features of table view are a nice idea, but some of it seems a bit quirky. I have a layout with many fields and when I flip to table view not all of them show up either on screen or in the modify list. In case anybody else has stumbled on this I found a work around, which is to add a new field (or several) in table view and then trash them in the modify window. When they're deleted the original locked fields that were missing suddenly appear to take their place.

I am making a database for work and trying to exclude records from a report. I used the starter database “Inventory”. I have a field named “In_Out” and when a card is put into inventory, this field is set with the number “1”. And when it is taking out of inventory this field is set with the number “3”. I use this field to filter the portals Cards In and Cards Out. This works just fine. My problem is when running the report “ View Inventory Report” I have not been able to exclude the cards that have been taken out of inventory. Hello all, Greetings from Seoul, Korea. I'm trying to figure out how I can add an image file of my signature to the signature box in a letter layout with merged fields. What I've done: 1. Insert the text with merged fields throughout 2. Added the image of my signature as a .jpg in the signature box. I did this by going into the Insert menu and selecting 'picture.' *Since the length of the letter varies according to the information in the merged fields, it often ends up under or over the text. I've seen that Filemaker 10 has a sorting functionality for developers when defining tables and fields; it's a column with a double head arrow which can be used to do arbitrary sorting by drag n' dropping. Is this functionality available for developers to be used in own apps? I have a layout based on table view and i need to make arbitrary sorting of records available to users. The option i'm using now is a numeric field for sorting, users put numbers to sort records as they want and Filemaker sorts according to this, but it's a bit difficult if table has more than 35-40 records.

Is it really worth upgrading to FMP11? The answer is YES - not for the new features that come with FMP11 but for this totally awesome undocumented improvement. I would think this would be easy to achieve, but I can't figure it out and have searched all over to no avail. I want a sub-summary to print at the top of every page with a maximum of 6 body records printed. Here are some examples of how this should look for various numbers of records within the sub-summary grouping. I have a layout which on layout load performs a few finds so that only certain records are showing. This layout pulls fields from other tables. It is sorted by month and contains a sub-summary leading part sorted by Header::cMonth, a sub-summary leading part sorted by Client_Header::ClientID, and a sub-summary trailing part sorted by Header::cMonth. The layout shows a few clients (that are similar) for every month with their projected, remaining, and spent budgets. I need to somehow get a total of these numbers. I've two tables related by a room number. one called "room" and the other "equipment in room". I want a report to list all the rooms with all equipment listed under a "room number" sub-summary. Not all rooms have equipment. If I make the layout show records from "room layout" I only get one piece of equipment listed and if I make the layout "equipment" I dont see the rooms with no equipment. Any thoughts? thanks

"PK_Customer_ID" is defined to contain unique values only. Allow duplicate value? I click on NEW CONTACT in my custom solution and it creates a unique customer ID. Then when I click over to another tab such as Purchase Order or Work Order, and arrow down to that Contact I get the message above. Please help. Amy S

Hi All, I am using ESS and hooked up to ms sql db. I have a column in the db of type BIT. with possible values of zero or one. This is the typical way of storing boolean/true false values.. What is the best way to handle this in FM? I notice with radio buttons the labels and values are not seperate.. And also i can't make a single checkbox.. checked meaning true and unchecked meaning false. Am i missing something? how can i handle this? thanks!

I'm working on creating an interface simply to list all records in my database. For my layout I've created a one line body with a header and a footer that looks great in layout mode. When I display in browse mode the header looks great and the footer looks great. The body starts out right under the header and looks wonderful at first but then, after displaying all the records in the database, there's a huge space between the displayed records and the footer. It's as if there's a set display size (as if this is meant to be a report rather than a screen) that is expected and I don't have enough lines to fill it so the display just shows empty background. I have a number of Products (that can change) and a number of Discounts (that can change) and I need to create a Cross Tab report that displays each Product for each Discount, thus showing the product price after the discount. Anyone know what happens in this scenario? You're running a script and you freeze the current window. The script launches a new window, does some stuff and closes that window. Now you're back to the original window. Is that original window still frozen or do you have to reissue another freeze window step? Does the act of opening a new window hork your frozen status on the first window?

I'm using FM Advanced 8.0v3 on Windows 7 64 bit. Whenever I am working with a layout the screen goes solid black when I drag an object. It makes it pretty hard to work with, as I just have to imagine I've got the object where I want it, then nudge again, then again, then again..... It doesn't do it if I just move using the arrow keys, but that's pretty slow too. Any ideas?

FMP Advanced 8, OS 0.6.2. I have a database with a pull down menu (3 options) to change the sender when printing a envelope. Now instead of the company name typed out, I want to use the logo on one occasion and typed text on both other occasions. I am remedial with Pro 9 but I am inserting photos in a field and the photos are too small when within proporation and too skewed when I do not keep it proporationate. I know I've seen this somewhere before, but I can't find it now. What's the easiest way to limit the number of subsummary categories to the top "N" categories when the subsummary part is resorted based on the count field? Another way I'm thinking about this is that rather than omitting the minor categories, lumping them in together as "other" and getting the count for the rest. I have a problem with IWP and Internet Explorer. When using IE some of the fields doesn't allow entering. This happens in a tabbed page. I have used "Open record/request" script step in the script, but it doesn't help. If I move that field out side of the Tab, it works perfectly. So the problem seems to be in Tabs. For example, there's one value list for Building, one for Room Name and one for Room Number. Hey all, I've got a layout with a bunch of calc fields that get the sum of related records. For some reason that I cannot seem to identify, one particular set of fields: "Subcon1" thru "Subcon8" do NOT show a $0.00 amount if they are $0, but all the other sum calc fields on my layout do! I have compared these Subcon fields to all my other fields over and over and cannot figure out what is different! Can anyone tell me how to make these Subcon fields show $0.00 like the others? I want to do something simple - but I can't see how FileMaker can do it. I want to prevent user changes to a field based on the value of another field (in the same record). Specifically: If FormIssued = "issued" then FormNumber field is read only. Privilige sets only seem to control editablity of whole records, and validation doesn't kick in until the record commits (which confuses users).

Hi, for some reason the Zapf dingbats font will not work in Filemaker 10 on my Mac. Instead of the graphic icon, I just get the letter "H" (which is the keystroke for a "black star" in Zapf Dingbats). It works fine in Text Edit. I've even tried copying the star from Text Edit, but it reverts to "H" once in FM, even though FM's font formatting bar says Zapf Dingbats 14 point. I think it may have something to do with Unicode. Can somebody enlighten me?

I have a print layout where I use sub-summaries. There is no body. That is because the table has thousands of records and I just want the sub-totals. I am trying to get two vertical lines to span the length of the page... on each side of the data field (like a spreadsheet). I am trying to accomplish this by setting each field's Field Border as "Right" and "Left"; Black; Hairline. The problem is that I have a miniscule break in the line at each sub-summary. Is there an easy way to get one solid vertical line accross sub summaries?

This is a real shortfall in FM, I have a databox in a layout with displays results from a calculation. The data can be various lengths. I have the mailit plugin which copies the layout and emails it (FM pleae add html email to the next update). Trouble is layout preview is always A$ so if data is too much I loose some, how the hell do I get round this?

Not sure if this is the right area, but here it goes. I have a grouped set of buttons that I have given an "object" name of "menu". I also have a container field named menu. Is it possible to place into that container field the menu object that I have on a seperate layout? I know you can place an "outside" object, but can you do the same with a true object from the same file?

Hi, I'tried to get my MAC solution to WIN but the layout isn't nice anymore. There are gradiants on Windows which I don't have on MAC. In the demo file I created a search box, which looks nice on MAC but on WIN 7 it's half transparent, WHY? The search box has 3 parts, left, middle, right. The middle part is originally 1px large. In my example I stretched it to 250px, maybe there is the problem but why the difference MAC, WIN by ChiSao demo.fp7.zip

This is going to be lengthy to explain - please bear with me. A while back, I noticed when I launched my FM6 files, that I got a message "Date and time are not the same as System settings - do you want them to be the same?" Obviously, I clicked "YES" - who wouldn't? Of COURSE I want my dates and times to be the same as the system settings!! After that, I also began to notice that FM wasn't accepting dates in the (logical) UK format of DDMMYYYY - it was insisting "Dates must look like ...." and allowing only the endlessly frustrating, illogical US system of MMDDYYYY. This baffled me no end. The date on my Mac was displayed in the UK format - what had gone wrong? …
