Does anyone know the precedence of the the OSX print dialog's saved print configuration settings (IE. "last used" or "custom saved print presets") vs. print setting in FMP print script step? I am setting up "print setup" and "print" script steps however it seems some settings are still followed by OSX setting such as two sided. Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks,<redacted>

I am not sure what this feature is called. I don't know how I ever found it to begin with. If I use the normal text tool on a layout and enter // I get a date when I print the layout. If I enter ## I get a page number. Is there a list of these functions? And specifically is there a time stamp like the date stamp? Ever since FIlemaker modified the Table Views so that users could crwate new FIELDS "on the fly", I've been kind of terrified of them -- because every once in a while *I* click on the "+" button on accident and wind up with a new Field. Usually I try to craft List Views that fulfill my clients' needs, but they almost always want to be able to use Table view, so I think I should "get over it. So, what is the best way to "Client-proof" the Table views from user errors? Would it just be by using Privilege Sets that bar access to Layout View? (I assume that if you don't have Layout privileges, FMP won't let you create new Fields, right?) Or is there an alternate t…

I have a Container field that will be used for Displaying Quicktime Files. The client wants to simply store a filepath to where the Quicktime file will "live", so I'm notusing the new remote storage option, just the old school approach. So, s I understand it, the user should click into the Container field and then select "Insert Quicktime" from the INSERT menu and then navigate to the file and bingo. So, I can tell them that's the way to do it. BUT - - - I worry a little that a user might insert a file by "drag & drop" instead, because they're used to doing this sort of thing. Once I have entered Manage Scripts the keyboard shortcut to Manage Layouts (Shift-Command-L) no longer works. If I exit Script Manager the keyboard shortcut is still lost, only restarting FM re-instates the shortcut. I tried this on a virgin file and it's still the same problem, so it's not file corruption. Okay, here's a real head-scratcher. I have a multi-part report that is, in virtually every way, behaving as expected. Expect for one Field, "LOCATION" which is the only field in a Sub-Summary part. The Field has Entries Like Box 1 Box 2 etc. In terms of Sorting and accurately ordering the hierarchy of records beneath it, it's behaving just fine. When I go to "Preview" Mode, it's looking good to go! But when I actually *print* -- or save the report as a PDF file . . . the *Numeral* isn't printing! Pre-FM12, groups of objects on a layout were selected by encircling them. If they weren't completely within the circle they weren't selected. In FM12, any object touched is selected. Is there a 'preference' in FM12 to use the old means of selecting objects on a layout? Or am I stuck with the new way which is a real pain when editing complex layouts?

In FM 12 Pro Adv... I have an already existing layout with fields populating it from a table. I went to Manage Database and created 12 more all new fields in the same table. Now I want to add those 12 new fields to the same already existing layout. It seems that all I can do is to individually drag the new fields on to the layout using the Field Tool. I want to record horse treatment notes in a patient's Visit Notes layout. To aid in entry speed, I want to place a series of buttons to the side of the layout (this will be for iPad), that when tapped, will add(insert, append) to text in a Notes field. Initial thoughts are to design the layout with the buttons, and associate a script that simply inserts the text into the Notes field, for that patient, on that visit. Is this too simple, or should I be setting up a more complex structure?

Had a layout with labels on the left and fields on the right. The fields were partially on top of the labels and I simply wanted to move them off to the right. I slid the right palette margin line some number of px to the right to make room. I grabbed all the fields and moved them some number of px to the right. Now it's messed up Browse mode. See BadLayout3.jpg. And I can't seem to get the fields to show data except for the top field in the array. All I did was attempt to move the fields. Anyone know how I can get them to show? I created a sub summary report that also uses filtered portals to create a report for our companies sales. I thought it would be neat if I could show the monthly sales by department for each year we have on record. My goal was to show each department as a row and each month's sales as columns. The report works, and shows the correct data, however it takes hours to run and summarize the data making the report unusable as it stands. I even tested just using one department and one year to see how long it would take to generate the report, and it took about 30 minutes before it was finished. In a nut shell this is what I did. I want to create a pricing calculator for my customer service team. I want the layout to ask Size X: ___ Size Y: ___ Size Z: ___ [submit] based on that information, it will generate a price code. They will take that price code and enter it into a different database. I don't want this calculator built into the 1 database, because it may be used in other databases, or independently. I was thinking about using a single record. But if I have 2 people generating price codes, they can't use the same record (IE it would be locked via record-locking.) Hi, I have a stupid problem that's been annoying me for some time now. Basically, I have an "On StartUp" script that I trigger when the user open the datafile "OnFirstWindowOpen". And the "On Start Up" script puts the user on a specific layout THAT I NEED to have priority. The only problem, Filemaker for some reason, opens with my largest layout width for a split second. Long enough to make the database look unprofessional, instead of looking to the script and holding the layout view until it's called. Using the Starter Solution in FMPRO 12 called "Contacts" I have conditionally formatted the Work Address & Home Address Tabs (in the "Contact Details" layout) to color the tab label's text green IF there is anything in the "Work Address 1" field or the "Home Address 1" field. Since you can only see EITHER the Work Address OR the Home Address at one time (in that layout) this color change let's me know if the currently unselected tab has any data or not. FM 11 Adv. Frequently, as I am working in the layout mode I’ll get the message “the layout cannot be modified in the window because it is already being modified in a different window”. The layout names then appears in the Windows menu. I have to exit FM and restart to close these windows. I know the idea is to prevent editing a record in two different windows, but editing occurs in the browse mode, and I’m working in the layout mode. This is just a database for use on my desktop PC only. What can be causing this? And when this happens, is there a way to close the window (although I did not create it) without restarting? We have a database that is our sales orders database. One of the fields is "Closed Date" Is it possible to make the layout locked or read only when the closed date is filled in? this way the record can't be edited. (I'll handle editing it with a closed date at another time). Any thoughts or suggestions?

Filemaker 12 gave us an absolutely fantastic new feature, among many others: the gray area to the right of the layout, in layout mode. The thing is, does anyone know the nitty-gritty details on how it works, and interacts with browse or preview modes? I'd love to have it spelled out in black and white for me, to eliminate the murky grey area (haha, see what I did there? ). Anyways, the help file simply says all objects in the gray area are right-anchored, skipped in the tab order, and appear in Table view. Does anyone know how Filemaker chooses what Sample Data to present in Layout mode? I'd like to have a little better control over it, ideally, for fine-tuning field sizes and whatnot. Relatedly, does anyone know how Filemaker refreshes said sample data? For instance, if I have a global calculation field on the layout, and the result changes (but the calculation definition doesn't), what would it take for Filemaker to refresh the sample data in Layout mode, for that field, since it seems to prefer the original result from the moment Layout mode was first entered. I have layouts that are sized the same. But when I go to my Quiz that is sorted by records it takes the whole screen. The "Header", "Body", and "Footer" have the same measurements as my other layouts. I even went to the little icon in layout and made sure that the desktop is checked for 1024x768 and it is. So my "next" button is sitting in the middle of the page when I go to browse mode and the record fills the whole screen. In layout mode the button is where it is suppose to be. Please advise.

Hi I'm currently working on a database where photo's are ordered on a website and need to be managed (via .csv imports) in FM12. This is all working pretty well so far but my problem is with the reporting/summary. The setup is that a FMdb (iPad/FMgo) generates the data that is imported into the site CMS where customers can order specific prints. That works fine. The modified data is exported (CSV) from the CMS and imported into another FMdb, that is related to the initial FMdb (where the data is generated). Simple scenario: Contacts table includes 'FirstName' and 'LastName' fields. Also has a field 'Invoice To'. With my upgrade from 8.5->12 Filemaker has gone bananas with the font/size/color of my tab labels at the tops of my layouts. SOme layouts are fine, some have mixed with some as they were originally and the others huge light blue text. Some have tiny black text.. All show the correct parameters as the original. Where could FM be getting these bizarre display ideas from? -jim lee

Hopefully a simple one here - but not 'intuitive' to me as yet. As the title suggests, a layout contains client info, which includes a LastName field, and FirstName field. How can I select all fields in a layout and make them say 20 pixels deep not the 16 to 17 they currently are ? and also distribute them correctly, the database I am working on seems to pull them off the page when I try to distribute the space between them automatically...

I am working in FM pro 11 advanced. i have a layout using Monotype Corsiva, but it is printing in something like Arial. It looks correct in Preview, and the sizes and spacing are correct. Why is this happening, and what can i do to correct it?

I am trying to run a list report and have it as layout and created a script for it. It is all based on info from my "clients" table. When setting it up i put to sort by sale date however it does not sort. It is a random order. When i am in the layout i try the sort tool by that particular date field and change from descending to ascending order it moves them around but in no particular oder. I can't even make sense of what it is trying to do. I can sort by other fields. Any ideas of what might be wrong with the field. In a container field, is there a way to have a single page PDF display as a image on a PC as it does on a MAC. The benefit is the PDF is vector so printing is very sharp and file is small.

Hi, I think I must just have some weird setting in place but I can't for the live of me find it. Every time I set a number field to display as a percentage it shows it as a percentage times 100. For e.g. If the number in "general" format is 40, and I set it to percentage it changed to "4000%". It's clearly only a display issue, as if I change it back to general it displays in the original format. Anyone have any idea what could be causing this? I've tried the same thing in a new database with the same result, so I assume it's a preference in FileMaker.

When I go into layout on filemaker 12 the screen looks like graph paper was put on top of it with tons of boxes. How can I shut that feature off. I can hardly see the names of my fields. Thanks. Mike

Hope this is possible. I have a layout with a bunch of fields and I need to be able to lock the fields so they can't be modified. Can this be done with the script trigger OnLayoutEnter using a field from the table that if > than blank lock the fields, or do I have to do this field by field. Thanks

I am using FM 12 Adv v 1 (v3 is too buggy) My app, when running in Windows has this characteristic: If the user 'maximizes' the FM window and then maximizes my app window, when the app opens a new window, it causes the app window to shrink to it's "pre maximized" size. Specifically, in debug I can see that it is the New Window ["Reset Setup"; Heigfht: 10; Width 10; Top 3000; Left 3000; Style Document] command. Any ideas? I'm a Mac FM developer, with limited experience on Windows, designing a db for a client on Windows 7 Enterprise. Currently, I'm developing on my Mac and then porting it over to a Windows 7 laptop for testing (FM 11.0v2 for both). I've encountered a weird scrolling issue that I can't seem to resolve: In Browse mode, I have a layout that extends down past the visible window space, and so requires some scrolling to see the bottom half. On my Mac, I can scroll down normally, using either my mouse or FileMaker's scroll bars (note: I'm not referring to the optional scroll bars for fields or portals, just the standard window scroll bars). I have two examples where I would like a result and I've never been able to figure out a good way. Some of you are incredible on reporting so I want to check in for ideas please: 1) Can same report be used with or without a body? I create reports with many leading parts and then by sorting, it only groups and summarizing those parts. This is a great way to use the same layout for multiple reports. But if someone doesn't want the body, it seems I must duplicate the report and delete the body and maintain the two layouts. I use a text box 'I declare variables' placed at the top of a layout and the bottom of the stacking order to declare variables that I display as merge variables. The technique was mostly pioneered by Comment and Mr_Vodka and now it has become one of my favorite techniques. But 12 does not respond as 11 does in this regard. Two files attached (11 and 12) - created in 11.0v3 (Windows XP SP3) and then dragged to 12 icon. 11 refreshes without script ... 12 requires a Freeze Window to force the refresh. This is annoying... an in focus text box will not show all its content if a tab oject is in the way ?!

Is this possible? Just like the javascript version we see on the net when filling out a registration form. So for instance a text field for inputting your first name would say "Enter First Name" in light grey, and when you click in the text box the watermark message disappears so you can start typing your name. Can you make this in Filemaker some how?

Is there a way to check that a particular font is available at startup time, for both Mac and Windows?

I have a Go app that utilizes signature capture for placing on some docs that get exported to PDF's. The problem is that if I scale the container field down to fit on the documents the signature is so light that it can just barely be seen. Even when viewed on the layout they are very light. Is there anyway to make the stroke bolder at capture time on the Go? If not, does anyone know of a way to possibly manipulate the captured PNG inside of the container (adjust contrast or something similar). I have a master layout where I am entering Books and multiple Subjects per book. One book has many subjects. Through a Find on this Master layout, I come up with a subset of records (Books and Subjects) that I need to run a Report on. My Report is another layout where I want to use the Found records to show each Book and its related Subjects. Each layout works perfectly by itself, but using a Button on the master layout to go to the Report (using GTRR or Go To Layout, etc.), the Report isn't using the Found set. Why can't we have tick boxes? Every other app I know uses them... my boss wants them... even the setting in the Filemaker app uses them... why can't we have them!?

I'm stuck on this issue and not sure how to describe in a search so here is my post. setting up a new layout (see layoutmode.jpg), all the fields are arranged nicely and are perfectly sized. Once I switch to Browse mode (see browsemode.jpg) everything is stretched out (it seems to be 100 px long vs 19 px as it is setup in layout mode). Also, everything looks like it is stretched the exact same length (despite most fields being set to 19 px). HI, I'm looking for a resource, website, company, individual that is very very good with layouts. Not the structure of a layout but the look and feel of a layout including the overall user interface. This is for an existing application in FMPro that is ready for wide scale distribution in a major renewable energy company in North America. I have a report that is grouped and sorted by a sub-summary field. However, some of these sub-summaries cross the page boundary and half the data is on one page and the rest on the next. Now, I do not wish to start a new page with every sub-summary, as each one is only a few lines, but if it is going to break the page, is it possible to just move that sub-summary to the next page?

I am using FM 12 Adv I have 3 fields: [startDate] [EndDate] [Duration] Duration is a calculated field that subtracts StartDate from EndDate and if ENDDate is blank, substitutes get(CurrentDate). This works. Problem: If [startDate] = October 20, 2012 and [EndDate ]="" then Duration = 3 days ... ok ( [EndDate] uses today's date.) But, when I start the program tomorrow, it still shows 3 days when it should show 4 days. I have a tabbed layout with a number of levels (each contained under a top structure of tabs - Time 1, Time 2, Time 3, etc) containing a total of nearly 500 fields at time 1 (and drawn from a Time 1 table). As mentioned I then have multiple time points (30 in all) that contain the same information (just the next time point along). To create the different time point fields I can (for example) duplicate the Time 1 table (and rename it to Time 2 - it does not matter if the time 2 fields are the same name as time 1 - I can easily take care of…

I am looking at a database that I will be reworking, but I have come across something I have never seen before. In the Manage Layouts window the icons have a star sort've icon. I am unsure what this means? I've attached a screenshot. Nevermind, I've figured it out - When a layout has a script trigger attached to it.

By default in Table view, layouts show a series of fields in the top row, followed by field data in subsequent rows. In my case, that's too much horizontal scrolling to easily compare the data (there are relatively few records, but many fields). Is there any way to transpose the layout so that fields run down the first column, with data shown in additional columns to the right? I know this is similar to List view, but List view only shows one column for data, not multiple data columns.

Hello FMForums, I have a question in regards to creating a layout that lists a series of type. Let's say, there's a Table for a Type and there's another table for Stamps. In relation between the two tables, one Stamp is labeled as a certain Type. Is it possible to create a layout having the Type as the main table and then what happens is, I will have a Type, followed by a list of stamps that has been designated/labeled as that Type? Can It be done. i did a the prblem that i see is if a have a global filed in the i put in the sub summery and when i enter what i want to that filed and run i script it work fine the prblem that I have is that the user will see the data in the global filed in all the sub summery lines. HI All, I am looking for a tutorial on something that is probably basic, and probably already well documented - I'm just having trouble finding it: I'd like to create a list layout with a drop down box on the top that sets the sort term and re-sorts the layout. Environment MAC 10.6 with FMPA 12.0v2 I have a situation that works but needs to be refined because its not doing what the user requires. It starts out at style development where a user creates measurement charts for various stages of garment development. The layout(Enter New Chart Name) to create a new chart has 2 drop downs where the user selects a default measurement chart depending on size range and gender. The CUSTOMER drop down should display customer specific charts and the ALL CHARTS needs to display all charts minus ones that are designated RETIRED in the default chart. Hi all - I believe it was FM10 that introduced the feature where FileMaker maintains the sort order, if the records are sorted, on a layout automatically. So, if you have a window that setup to show records in list view and you sort those records, FileMaker automatically re-sorts when you modify the data in field(s) that the layout is sorted by. I hope I explained accurately. Anyway, I'm using FM11 currently and I'm wondering what effect that feature has on performance if you have 50 people that all have that same window visible all the time. I have a report that is broken into sub-summaries. I wish to be able to count how many different summaries there are. How do I achieve this. I tried using count(fieldname) (fieldname = the field that the summary is sorted by) but it always returned 1.

I've noticed a big change in the way FM12 handles larger layout objects in comparison to fm11 in a listview. FM11 prints the whole object even if the object is bigger then the layout section the object is placed in. FM12 doesnt put crops off the layout object to only be visible in the top-most section of the object. This prevents me from using large images, background images, vertical text, certain column graphics etc. I havent read this in the behaviour change list from FMI or saw a forum post, but i might have missed it. I have a report, that a field 'Comment' sometimes has many lines, sometimes none. I looked into sliding objects, but it doesn't seem to match what I need - or I didn't do it right.. If the field height has to increase, I only want it to for that record, not for all records, which in turn increases the spacing. Can someone please lend some advice :D

Hi, I have created a phonebook database but for the printable version layout I am having issues with the sub summary parts. It is sorted by department and sub department but not all departments have a sub department so is it possible to set it so that the second sub summary part collapses when there is no content to display. Hi, I'd like to ask you if you can help me with this. We are running several FM DBs simultaneosly which was created from same template DB. During the time we want to add new feature(s) but it's very uncomfortable to synchronize all changes with all DB on the server. This features updates are not only layout changes but it could be anything. adding new tables, fields, value lists etc. Does exists some way how to manage all DBs together? Hello Board! New FMP12 user here. Thank you to all for the help i've had so far. I'm really getting this db firing and it's making a difference to us! I have a report that summarises work done in the day. A script searches then sorts the info and then puts the user into a layout that shows the info. It looks good on screen, contains a Header part and a Summary part only, but when i print it to a laser A4, only the Header prints. How do i get the Summary part with the data to print? Thank you! hi there. i have a DB that has the following fields: customer name, image (container), category, image name. what i am trying to do is make a printable pdf. there is only one customer, one image (no duplicates), one name per image, one category will have multiple images. so the customer name is always at the top. then the category (CATEGORY 1, 2, 3), then the images with names are laid out 3 or 4 perpage. so category 1 may ave 3 images, then category 2 have 5, on so on. i have tried to make labels and no go. any help would be nice. thanks

I've read a couple of posts about locking down specific records, what I need to do is lock down a specific field so that it cannot be edited. I figured out HOW to do this and it works fine, using a couple of scripts. My issue is: When I set the field up and select none of the field entry options, this allows no editing of the field. My scripts add data/information into the field without issue. The problem is once you uncheck all of the field entry options, it eliminates the vertical scroll bar so we can not see the information in the field once it fills the window on the layout. I would like to setup an 11x17 landscape print view layout. That will let me use a portal for data and keep running headers and footers. However, if i close the file, it reverts back to a standard 8.5x11 letter view. Is there anyway to keep the 11x17 view i need for printing?

Probably a silly question. When I go into layout the screen area looks like graph paper and for me that's hard to work with. I can't seem to find the setting to turn that off. Any ideas?

I've been working on a database that will be used as an appendix in a PhD dissertation. There are long example quotes of text in a field that can span multiple pages. This comes from several different editions of a text book and are categorized by the composer/hero that the text is about. Fields are Hero (which is the composers name), author, edition, page numbers and quote. I'm trying to get a line on a report to go from the heading through the body, one line for each column. In previous version I had to make the line halfway through the heading and body then halfway body and footer - something very annoying. In 12 I can't seem to get it right. i am really lost as to the best way to show a table of values related to the current record. I have have internally joined relationships and need to should a value table in a report. i just simply want to return all the fields and values from a specific table in my report. i have tried to use portals however they do not auto resize their rows based on number of values. am i going about this all wrong? i know this is probably very simple i just cant find a good solution. thanks
