Importing & Exporting

Getting data in and out of FileMaker.

  1. Started by Zippy Aus,

Hi I am exporting the field contents of a calculated field. It has several returns in it. If I open the resulting txt file in wordpad the formating is correct, however if I open it in Notepad it is formatted as one long string with no returns. Is it possible to force this? If I open the txt file in wordpad and save over itself and reopen in Notepad it is fine. The resulting file is required to be inserted as the body text of an email. Any help would be greatly appreciated Regards ZP

I'm trying to import three files that are actually dumps from the three OUs in our Active Directory system to be able to maintain a valid list of users and email addresses. Unfortunately, all three OUs have different sets of information in them and therefore require different import orders for each. So if I run the script that runs the first import, everything works fine. If I run the second one, it breaks the preset sort order set in the script. If I go back and look at it, the sort order is all messed up. If I run the second and third sripts, the first one's order is then messed up, as well. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong! Can anyone think of a reason why a text file would be grayed out and not available for import? One of our members claims he cannot import the file. He is on a Mac so I can't connect and look at it but I have never heard of this and can't figure it out. There is a script to import the file and it's been working for hundreds of members for years so that's not the problem.

When I import from a file I am having trouble with the passord window popping up and having to enter the password as I import a file. I have a file "multiple tables", I have a script that will import a file into my file. As it imports and then changes to another table it will ask for the user name and password. Is there a way to get the file to import the file and not have the username and password dialog popping up on each table change. The file is FM 7 and I have users in the file. I will put the username and password in at the launch of the file. And it will ask me each time I import to a new table. Thanks in advance

My problem is that some customers have more then one debt so the customers ID can occur many times. How can I get FM to ignore duplicates of the customers ID. But still I want to get one of the field's. So if a customer have 5 records in Excel I want FM only to import one and ignore the others. Is that possible and not to hard to do as I'm not an expert on FM?

Well, I posted this last night and, if you view Forums, it shows my post. But the post is no longer there. So I'll try again ... I have spent hours and hours mapping a migration in Import scripts (many fields from many files). The fields are not in same order nor are they same names. I have matched arrows on hundreds of them. Then, we deleted some fields in the source files and all my maps break - every one of them - the arrows no longer line up to the right fields; they have jumped many fields off. It seems that joining two fields in the import map (in scripts) does NOT hold. This is ridiculous. Once you click the arrow between fields, they should stay J…

I'm a bit hosed. I have very long import maps scripted. The field names coming in are totally different and the order is different. I had about half of them mapped (the arrow pointing between fields). During this time, fields were deleted in the Source table. All my arrows moved and mismatched the fields! Once I have placed an arrow, it should NOT MOVE. I understand if unmapped fields move but not ones I've mapped! This has cost me hours and hours of work and I'm one unhappy camper tonight. LaRetta

  16. I just found out that my import/export functions are disabled when using IWP. Trouble is that my database has to have the ability to import a few files a day. It seems that the only way I could do this would be to have an "off-line" database that acts to import the required files and, at the end of the day, manually update the "on-line" database via IWP. The problem here is that more than one person will consistently be importing files to the database. This creates several complexities and organizational issues. Does anyone know a trick or a method that will make this import process less tedious (with IWP)?

I've got a script to import data from a text file. It's just one record at any one time, and the script is working fine using the Import Records command and a file path such as file:../ImportThis.txt However this system will be used by a number of different windows users, and the database won't necessarily always be in the same directory as the import text file. What I'd like to do is have the text file in the windows user's home directory (c:Documents and SettingsUser Name). This is referred to by the windows environment variable %USERPROFILE%. It's just that this export needs to happen on a daily basis and needs to be presented to the marketing department, so it would be much easier to have a pre-formatted spreadsheet rather than having to 'make it pretty' every day... I'm trying to consolidate several databases into one by importing the filemaker files themselves. It's working mostly, but there's one problem: The containern field contents aren't getting imported. The container fields are ending up empty. (They should have various documents in them as objects) How do you import container field contents? I understand that if I was exporting to text-based formats like .tab, .xml etc they would get thrown out for obvious reasons, but why are they getting thrown out when importing the filemaker files themselves? Are there any export formats that will allow exporting/importing cotainer field contents?

I've got importing figured out in general, but I'm having problems importing data into a portal. I've got three fields in the portal name_first, name_last, and Pin. In the import I've set what goes where and can see in the preview that it is matching up, however when I click import though it says that the number of records imported is correct, nothing is actually imported and new new records have been created. Thoughts? Thanks, Matt

I am creating an import between two files hosted remotely. I have got my fields to map correctly whilst importing records. I will no doubt be making changes to both the source file as well as the target file by adding new fields. If I add new fields, FileMaker naturally tries to map it against a blank field. Is there a way to stop new fields being added in the database to appear in a import dialog box.

First one: I am exporting data from a report sent to me, all imports peachy except the date. In the Excel file, it is written as 01-Feb-2006 and I have dates formatted in the DB as 02/01/2006. Previous imports converted the dates to the desired format, but this last one has not. I tried to conduct a search to find those records and delete them (then change the date format in Excel then reimporting them) but it won't let me search by that date format. I found a script …

This does not occur if I manually enter the URL in the IMPORT PICTURE area. Secondly, when importing data to checkbox or radio button type fields, the fields do not respond to the data and nothing is selected. I appreciate any and all assistance on this matter. I will be distributing the database to a number of different people, who will each modify the field. After that, I want to reconsolidate the database. What would be the best way to do this? Is there a way to use the import/export command in thsi way? Word has a function that lets you compare and merge documents - is there something similar in filemaker? thanks!
