Got a copy of Fmp 9 - the best kept secret in the world. I've tried Access from MS which is a nightmare and very hard to learn. I've set up my first database to track vehicles at work and it badly needs tweaking. I have a pop down list of 7 vehicles on my form. Each time I fill out the monthly mileages I'd like to assign some unique info to each vehicle - such as registration, service dates etc. I am having trouble visualising how to do this task - should I create separate value lists for each vehicle or a new table Hope this is no too confusing Cheers

I'm setting up a Price Summary database using Many-to-Many relationships. Basically, I have a long description of a machine that is being sold and I have simply entered the data in a large field that ultimately, through a relationship of a product id, leads to a printable layout. My problem is the return paragraphs/enters are recognized as a new value in the value list and not all the information is present in the printable format. How do I prevent this or get around it?

I've come across some responses to this, but nothing that has really helped yet, so I apologize if you've seen this before. I have a field that has a value list (a, b, c, d, e), and want to perform an auto calculation in a 2nd field that displays text based on the results of the first field. For example, if someone checks a, c, and d, the results in field 2 would be: You checked a You checked c You checked d I can't seem to figure out how to do this. When users are creating a new record, they must pick from an exsisting company list of about 3,000. First tried using a custom value list, but of course ran into the size limit error. Then created one based on field, but it is very slow in creating the list for the users. Is there a way to filter by each character that is entered? For example, when first clicked on the field nothing would happen. Entry of the first character "T" would display all value enties that begin with the letter "T". then "Ti"...and so forth. If thats not do-able, there has to be a beter way of providing a predifined list of choices for record enrty.

First I apologize for my lack of experience with FM. I am trying to filter on a value list that is created from information from another table. In short... User enters the Transaction Table via the web browser. First option is to click the _kf_booth which references Booth Table. My current issue is the booths change products every year. So I created in the Booth Table in addition to Booth# and Product, I now also track Season(which is the year) and Location. Greetings. Let me begin by pointing out my Filemaker abilities are limited, but unfortunately so is the time alloted to me to actually learn it. But, I am almost done with what I am doing, I just need to know how to do one more thing. Hi FM forum, Looking for some advice on formatting a dropdown calendar. I've enclosed a screen shot of the page, and what I'd like is to have the dropdown list just be the month/year names. Hi all, This seems to me like it should be fairly simple, but I just can't see the right way to do it. (Or maybe it can't be done?) For purposes of running some reports on employee activities, I have a field (EmpCode) formatted as checkboxes for each employee. The user checks each employee whose data they would like to include in their report. I would like to add an additional field (EmpTeam) formatted as checkboxes for so that if I checked "team 1" then all employees that are part of team 1 would be then checked in the EmpCode field mentioned above. I have 12 portals on one layout (relating to ordering a range of products). When the manager orders one of the products listed on one of the rows of a portal, they press a button (script) to change the status of that item (order placed), and it disappears off the portal as a result. The trouble is, even after running the script, its only when you actually manually click off the portal, onto the background, that the portal updates. I cant find a command to do this - I tried including Go to Object in the script, but that didnt do it. Refresh window doesnt work either. Go to next portal row doesnt either.....

Greetings, I have a layout with a main portal displaying XX rows. Each row, after being populated has an "amount" field that is the result of Price*Qty calcultion. I also have a summary field "sAmount" which is a total of "amounts". To display this summary total I have been placing a one row protal directy under the main portal in what would be a logical place for an "Order Total." This works but the trouble is the summary field will not display a new total (after a new row is created, or a row is modified, etc)unless I "click" into the summary field essentially refreshing the field. This little quirk has been bugging me for the longest time, and I think it's time I figure out how to stop it. When opening some files, if I try to resize or move objects in layout mode, they seem to snap to a grid. When I create new layouts, it doesn't do this. Instead, it just resizes or moves by pixel, which is the way I want it. Someone please tell me this is a setting you can turn on and off, and if it is, how can I turn it off? Thanks a lot.

Hey guys, following tables: VendorContracts - Devices - SLA all with tables in between since multiple vendor contracts can be attached to devices and multiple devices are attached to 1 SLA. These items just make me feel stupid... I created a database with three tables: assets, clients and transactions. I plan to use for clients to checkout equipment from me. I have created relationships between the tables. I have a Clients:ClientID matched to Transactions:TransClientID and Transactions:TransItemNumb to Asset:ItemNumber. I want to use it for other web pages not in the filemaker provided examples. Is it possible? I know it has some relationship to GET and PUT in the html source. Where do I start? I want to automate the filling in of fields on webpages. Some of these sites are clean, standard html, others use .asp. Here is a quickie, How can i bring the tab order to an end so it does not go round and start again at tab 1. I remenber reading something about hiding a field as the last tab, ive tried it but either the field accepts data input and makes a mess or i have it to not accept data and it shows an ugly "you cant put data in here" message. ? On the same subject, but less important is there an easy way to tab onto the next "tab layout". i cant for the life of me think why Fm uses the same word for 2 concepts within its package but i think you get the idea. I've recently added a field to my database which is calculated from two already existing fields (let's call them field A and field :. I added the new field to a layout, but it (the new field) comes up empty in all records. It will populate itself if I make a change to either A or B, but I'd rather not have to do this for every single record in this layout. Hi all. I'm looking for some guidance on this problem. When a user creates a job in this database, I'd like the operations that person chooses (in a portal) to disappear from the value list once assigned to that job. Currently, the database is set up with the operations and jobs with their own tables, and are joined by a table called operation estimates, which takes both primary keys from the other tables. This is not really a problem, but more of hopeful outcome. I have portals setup in a list to display information about several different product series. Right now each portal displays the same amount of rows regardless if there is one record per product series or 100. What I was hoping that FileMaker can do (and I'm not holding my breath) is to dynamically adjust the number of rows in the portal to the amount of records per product series (1 row for 1 record, 10 rows for 10 records)

Does anyone know how to reserve access to a Layout/Tab based on the account? I've seen it done in Job Pro Central, but I do not know how to do it. I want only certain individuals to be able to access a certain tab on a tab control and deny access to everyone else... this may get messy. On my layout, I am using a checkbox format so that a field can accept multiple entries from the value list. My problem is this, I want the input to be a checkbox so that users can check the boxes that apply, but I would like the printing of the field to be in a horizontal list format. I set the checkbox to not print and placed a field underneath that prints as an edit box. Unfortunately, it prints as a vertical list, not horizontal as I would prefer and need so it all fits on the form. I poured over the FM help and couldn't find a solution. Any ideas?

Has anyone developed a navigation interface that looks like the one on iTunes or Mail? Menu items on the left that open and close, revealing or hiding sub-menu items? Items contain graphics and text I tried with a global image container, pics of the different menus, and a lot of buttons on top. It works fine but I can't make my selection remain highlighted. I have a field formatted so that it picks values from a value list. The system is built on FMPA9 on MacOS X 10.5.2 International with Greek enabled. All is well except... When I format the field to be a pop-up menu (as opposed to, say, a drop-down list), and then I click on it to expand the menu so I can pick a value from it, all values in the list show in the wrong font, gibberish-like. If I go ahead and actually do select a value, then the pop-up menu goes away and the selected value sure enough shows up in its proper greek capable font. But this behavior renders the Pop-up menu option pretty much useless to me. I have to only use Drop-down list, instead. …

Hello I have a layout which has 2 portals on it. The first portal is the child of the overall layout table and the second portal is the child of the first portal. The database record creation configuration is set to match this: the overall layout table has record creation ability in the first portal and the first portal has record creation ability in the second portal. Some may say that such a technique would become unweildly as databases generally grow to contain thousands of records, but let me explain my situation... I have designed a stock management and ordering database. Tables: Stock Orders Suppliers So an request-order gets created - new record, with name of stock item. Lets say vinegar. But there are two suppliers of vinegar - A and B. The staff entering the order randomly just selects one of them. I have a People table with a Roles field with "staff", "faculty" and "students" in it using checkboxes. I can create value lists off of this table filtered by role. No problem. But I also have the field Status denoting Active Faculty. When a constrain the relationship by two fields, it breaks. Is it possible to do a value list filtered by both fields? I have a DB called Quotes. When I receive a quote from a supplier, I create a record and enter a Quote Number (unique), a Part Number, and the Quoted Price. Let's say I receive 4 quotes from several suppliers for the same part, each quote with a different price. Hello. I'm in the process of designing a database that keeps track of inventory and clients. As inventory is tracked through the database, I thought it would be easy to add an estimate layout where I can create an invoice (so to speak) for a client. Essentially what I want is, once creating a new record, a portal which let's me choose the product or item id number and for the details to appear in the portal row (manufacturer, price, etc (all from the inventory table)) and to then advance to the next row so I can repeat the process over and essentially create a receipt. I have created a portal in a recipie file. The ingredient gets selected from a list, quantity gets put in etc. Its a self join relationship. Hi, Sorry if this has been covered before, but I'm currently stuck on this one issue. I have a portal displaying a list of cases, and if the user clicks on one of them it displays details of that case in the other half of the screen. What I'd like to do is allow the user to preform a search using any of the fields in the "details" half, and then display the found results in the portal. Hello, I want to print a layout content wich is bigger than A4 size (please don't ask to re-arrange the layout because it's dam'n complex :-)). For that I use the resize factor in % located in print driver. Doing a print downsize doesn't reduce the content of the layout to fit the page (A4), in fact, the visible - not reduced layout content - is shrinked according to the value specified in a smaller region in A4 page during print, cutting the right and bottom section of the layout. I want to create a letter to my clients that, as an option, will list any Invoice records with open balances. At this time, when there are no invoice records for that client, the layout in preview mode is blank. Is there a way to have the layout display the other content even if there are no invoice records? I've got a layout in which I have a portal which has two different checkboxes. All of the fields on the layout are supposed to be readonly. I unchecked both enter in browse and find. However, when I use this form I can uncheck one of the fields but I cannot check it. The other field cannot be modified at all. I've also set the layout without automatic updates but that only means I get a reminder to save the changes. What is allowing this to happen? Both fields have value lists which are identical (as far as I can see) with one value of "Yes". What am I overlooking?

I have recently downloaded some sample files from this forum and have noticed that the field names do not display in the Layout Mode. It appears that when in Layout Mode the data from the active field is being displayed. In order to see the field name I must double-click on the field to display the Field/Control Setup window. Hi, I'm extremely lost so any help is muchly appreciated. I was getting along fine producing reports by printing the layouts in filemaker as pdf. But now my reports are getting more complex, with different combinations and headings etc, I figured, why not produce a caculated field, that when exported, will produce an html version of the report. The only problem with this is headers and footers (as well as footer on the last page - for totals, and making sure group headers aren't on their own at the bottom of each page). I'm completely new to Filemaker and I'm using it do build a database for my nonprofit organization. I created a "home/start page" to help me easily access my layouts. This "home page" consists of 4 buttons which link to the 4 different layouts that I have. 2 are data entry layouts (donors & donations). The other 2 are reports. On the top right corner of each of my 4 layouts is a button which links back to the "home page" layout. So after creating this, it does everything I want it to. I have some images that have to be single page tif in a database. I am using the webviewer to see these and a script to go to next page etc. It USED to work when I had filemaker 8.5 and quicktime 7.1.5 installed. However it doesn't work with the latest version of filemaker (9) Any suggestions of a work around? I have installed alternatiff to no avail. TIA

Is there a way to specify a specific Portal Row in a calculation in a way that is similar to specifying a specific repetition in a Repeating Field? For instance, if it were a repeating field and I wanted the 4th repetition, I would write "Field1[4]". If I want the data from Field1 in the fourth portal row, how would I do that? The actual context for this is that I am working with a very idiosyncratic website and I have to transform a lot of PDF files that have a lot of tables into web pages. (The reasons for doing such a dumb thing are too complicated to go into.) I have to have the normal content in plain text, but the tables have to be transformed into …

This seemingly simple problem is stumping me. Basically, I have a Checkbox and I have some text (not a field, just some text on the table). I want to set it up so that when the checkbox is NOT checked, the text is invisible (that is, the same color as the background) and when it is checked, the text is bright red. This seems like it should be easy (and it may turn out to be) but I cannot seem to find any way of checking if a particular checkbox is checked or not. Any help would be appreciate. Thanks.

In my experimentation with custom menus, I created a new menu set and then added some custom menu items. It seems that once you create an item, you can not delete it without deleting the whole menu set and starting over. I created a menu set for a particular layout and added a custom menu "Job Scripts". When I discovered that you CAN indeed delete the [scripts] menu from your set and create your own custom Scripts menu with no naming conflict, I did just that. Now I want to delete the original "Job Scripts" but there is no delete option - only Create, Edit or Duplicate. Seems like a real faux pas on Filemaker's part. I have a drop down list for "part numbers" in upper case & "description" in title case in an inventory database containig over 17,000 records. Can I format the drop down lists to show in caps lock or title case? Some people who have entered data have entered them in all different case formats so the drop down list looks very messy.

I am having a slight issue with printing in table-view. Currently I am displaying data from about 20 fields and originally Filemaker would cut off some of the viewable fields. At the moment to correct this problem I have shrunk the text so that it will all fit onto one page. I am wondering if FileMaker offers options similar to excel that allows the user to define the printable area, so I don't have to worry about resizing. Also related to this topic, I'm wondering if I can word-wrap in the table view fields. This would greatly reduce the need for space. So if there is a solution to either of these topics that would help the database Thanks

In the old days (pre-Conditional Formatting), if I wanted to give a background color that would changed based on a field's contents, I would use a Calc field resulting in a container. Let's say I have a layout with 30-35 of these fields, would conditional formatting be slower over a network than these calc fields?

Hi all, I'm working on a contact manager, and I'd like to have a small google map (web-viewer) showing the location of the address. However, I'm only seeing all the "junk" from maps.google.com. To see the actual map, my window would need to be enormous... Is there a way to center the web-viewer content to the map & location?? Thanks for any input on this, Michael

Hello, I have a letterhead graphic, created by a screenshot, which prints clearly out of Preview (a std. Mac graphics app), but which gets very blurry when printed out of FileMaker, either as an object on the layout or as a graphic within a container field. FileMaker shows the correct pixel size on the layout. Is there a way to get this letterhead graphic printing clearly? Steve Kayner

Hello, I got a table firmen with a primary key pk_firmen, and a table kontake with a primary key pk_kontakt and a foreign key fk_firmen_kontakte. Each company (firma) can have more than 1 contact. There is another table telefon with a foreign key fk_kontakte_telefon. The contacts of a company are given priorities. The telephonenumbers of a contact have also some priorities. Hello I'm a newbie and I have a problem... I want to do what I though was a VERY simple thing, but I'm blowed if I can find the answer anywhere. Hi List, I want to print a page with a single field repeated in columns accross the top of the page (Field A in eg below) and values of other fields (B-D)listed down the columns. This is easy enough with a Form in Preview mode created with columns but I want the field names of B-D only listed once in the first column. What I get is the field names listed in each column. I cant remove the field names in the other columns using Sliding or my efforts at conditional formatting. I have a line items file containing products. Each product is in a single category. I have a report which shows how many of each product is in each category. The report is sorted, descending, by the number of products. Some categories have around 100 products. Is it possible to get a top ten list of products in each category? The only way I can think of to do this is to export the report to a different file and loop through the products in each category using a variable 'counter'. Is there a better way? Thanks, ft.

Hi all, Got a simple question ] In calculation field, I can select the value and copy it. When I want to change it, the pop up show "This action cannot be performed because the field is not modifiable." That's good. So, can this one also be applied to regular "Text" field? If I have a "Text field" and I want to lock it (prevent user from changing the value), but user can select the value (copy and paste) for searching or finding purpose. Is this possible? I tried to unclick "Allowed field to be entered: in Browse mode" and try to select value inside a field and it cannot be selected (fully locked). Hi All, I am creating a database for a yearly tradeshow that houses all company and sales information. I have created a separate pricing database. Currently the database pulls the pricing from the other via a sales ID. This works great but there are approximately 106 items to sell. When next years show comes into play I am assuming I have to add another 106 records to my pricing database with the new prices. The sales ID is a drop down list to choose the item, if I add another 106 records, the drop down list is going to start getting ridiculously long. I have a layout (lst layout) with a button called "Preview". I want the script for the "Preview" button to open a new window, go to another layout (2nd layout) in that new window and go into preview mode for that 2nd layout in that new window. I can get the new window to open and get the new layout (2nd layout) into preview mode successfully. The problem is that my first window always changes to the 2nd layout layout (the one that is previewed). I have tried numerous combinations of script code without success.

Greetings, all. I have two Portals on a layout. Portal A has multiple lines of data. The intention is for each record in portal A to be copied to records in Portal B. In actuality, my script (currently using mostly Set Field) would take data from, say, Line 1 of Portal A, transfer it to Line 1 of Portal B, return to Portal A and take data from Line 2, transferring it to Line 2 in Portal B. etc. etc. Suggestions, please?

Hello, I am having an issue with a report using summary fields. I have a series of transactions to various work orders. My report looks like below Work Order#-----WO Quantity----Usage(lb) 123-----------------1000------------5 123-----------------1000------------3 123-----------------1000------------1 125------------------500------------5 125------------------500------------2 If I summarize the WO Quantity, I want to get 1500 because there are only two work orders with 1000 and 500 ea. Hello all: I know this is a head banger but I know I'm missing something simple here. I have a layout for inputting ORDERS. On that layout I have a CustomerID field. I have the field set as a popup list using the Customer table - 1st field set to CustomerID and the 2nd field set to Customer Full name and I'm showing only the Customer Full Name. For some reason I only see 1 customer record in the popup. Any ideas? I should be seeing all my customer recs under that popup. I have the include all records radio button checked. Thanks. Dom

Is it possible to have 3 different portals on the same layout? I have 3 departments each tracking their own time and materials. They do this with a unique relationship between the dept. and our main job ticketing database. I want to be able to evaluate all 3 departments at the end of a job. I have a table occurrence for customers-invoices which uses the following criteria: _kp_customers_id = _kf_customers_id zc_date_low <= order_date zc_date_high >= order_date When I change the dates, the portal records don't update based on the new filter critera. If I leave the layout and return; however, the records on the portal are correct. I am assuming that the criteria is working properly, there is just something that keeps the portal from updating after changing the criteria. What am I missing? Thanks.

I have a setup very similar to that referred to by Comment in 196128 - Child records displayed in a portal, details for the selected child record are displayed on the parent layout All works fine and the selected child record details are displayed on the parent layout when a script is run - Set Field[ContactsPortal::GContactID; ContactsPortal::ContactID]. I have a simple Filemaker Pro 8.5 database. It has students' data in one table and details about the classes they take in a second table. A portal lets me see the student's class records. I want those records to display in chronological order with the most recent class showing at the top of the page. When I set up the portal, I checked "Sort portal records" in the Portal Setup dialog box, specifying to sort in descending order by the field "Start Date." I'm trying to create a database that will (in part) be used for employee timesheets and job creation/monitoring, and eventually for billing and beyond. Right now, I'm stuck on how to get the different job operations to show up in a portal so that the user can select from them, then assign employees and estimates for them. I had envisioned a new window to display the 50-odd ops that this company has, then update upon a submit button. Now, the op numbers are stored as a value list, and upon submission, the portal would just concatenate all the selections the user made. Anyone know any tips?
