    Got a copy of Fmp 9 - the best kept secret in the world. I've tried Access from MS which is a nightmare and very hard to learn. I've set up my first database to track vehicles at work and it badly needs tweaking. I have a pop down list of 7 vehicles on my form. Each time I fill out the monthly mileages I'd like to assign some unique info to each vehicle - such as registration, service dates etc. I am having trouble visualising how to do this task - should I create separate value lists for each vehicle or a new table Hope this is no too confusing Cheers

  2. I'm setting up a Price Summary database using Many-to-Many relationships. Basically, I have a long description of a machine that is being sold and I have simply entered the data in a large field that ultimately, through a relationship of a product id, leads to a printable layout. My problem is the return paragraphs/enters are recognized as a new value in the value list and not all the information is present in the printable format. How do I prevent this or get around it?

    I've come across some responses to this, but nothing that has really helped yet, so I apologize if you've seen this before. I have a field that has a value list (a, b, c, d, e), and want to perform an auto calculation in a 2nd field that displays text based on the results of the first field. For example, if someone checks a, c, and d, the results in field 2 would be: You checked a You checked c You checked d I can't seem to figure out how to do this.     When users are creating a new record, they must pick from an exsisting company list of about 3,000. First tried using a custom value list, but of course ran into the size limit error. Then created one based on field, but it is very slow in creating the list for the users. Is there a way to filter by each character that is entered? For example, when first clicked on the field nothing would happen. Entry of the first character "T" would display all value enties that begin with the letter "T". then "Ti"...and so forth. If thats not do-able, there has to be a beter way of providing a predifined list of choices for record enrty.

    Hi FM forum, Looking for some advice on formatting a dropdown calendar. I've enclosed a screen shot of the page, and what I'd like is to have the dropdown list just be the month/year names. For purposes of running some reports on employee activities, I have a field (EmpCode) formatted as checkboxes for each employee. The user checks each employee whose data they would like to include in their report. I would like to add an additional field (EmpTeam) formatted as checkboxes for so that if I checked "team 1" then all employees that are part of team 1 would be then checked in the EmpCode field mentioned above.     I have 12 portals on one layout (relating to ordering a range of products). When the manager orders one of the products listed on one of the rows of a portal, they press a button (script) to change the status of that item (order placed), and it disappears off the portal as a result. The trouble is, even after running the script, its only when you actually manually click off the portal, onto the background, that the portal updates. I cant find a command to do this - I tried including Go to Object in the script, but that didnt do it. Refresh window doesnt work either. Go to next portal row doesnt either.....

    Greetings, I have a layout with a main portal displaying XX rows. Each row, after being populated has an "amount" field that is the result of Price*Qty calcultion. I also have a summary field "sAmount" which is a total of "amounts". To display this summary total I have been placing a one row protal directy under the main portal in what would be a logical place for an "Order Total." This works but the trouble is the summary field will not display a new total (after a new row is created, or a row is modified, etc)unless I "click" into the summary field essentially refreshing the field.     This little quirk has been bugging me for the longest time, and I think it's time I figure out how to stop it. When opening some files, if I try to resize or move objects in layout mode, they seem to snap to a grid. When I create new layouts, it doesn't do this. Instead, it just resizes or moves by pixel, which is the way I want it. Someone please tell me this is a setting you can turn on and off, and if it is, how can I turn it off? Thanks a lot.

    Hey guys, following tables: VendorContracts - Devices - SLA all with tables in between since multiple vendor contracts can be attached to devices and multiple devices are attached to 1 SLA. Now on the layout of SLA I have a portal which shows a list of the devices BUT i want it to show a list of all vendor contracts aswell. Is this possible with some kind of portal in portal setup?     These items just make me feel stupid... I created a database with three tables: assets, clients and transactions. I plan to use for clients to checkout equipment from me. I have created relationships between the tables. I have a Clients:ClientID matched to Transactions:TransClientID and Transactions:TransItemNumb to Asset:ItemNumber.     Here is a quickie, How can i bring the tab order to an end so it does not go round and start again at tab 1. I remenber reading something about hiding a field as the last tab, ive tried it but either the field accepts data input and makes a mess or i have it to not accept data and it shows an ugly "you cant put data in here" message. ? On the same subject, but less important is there an easy way to tab onto the next "tab layout". i cant for the life of me think why Fm uses the same word for 2 concepts within its package but i think you get the idea. It will populate itself if I make a change to either A or B, but I'd rather not have to do this for every single record in this layout. When a user creates a job in this database, I'd like the operations that person chooses (in a portal) to disappear from the value list once assigned to that job.     This is not really a problem, but more of hopeful outcome. I have portals setup in a list to display information about several different product series. Right now each portal displays the same amount of rows regardless if there is one record per product series or 100. What I was hoping that FileMaker can do (and I'm not holding my breath) is to dynamically adjust the number of rows in the portal to the amount of records per product series (1 row for 1 record, 10 rows for 10 records)

    On my layout, I am using a checkbox format so that a field can accept multiple entries from the value list. My problem is this, I want the input to be a checkbox so that users can check the boxes that apply, but I would like the printing of the field to be in a horizontal list format. I set the checkbox to not print and placed a field underneath that prints as an edit box. Unfortunately, it prints as a vertical list, not horizontal as I would prefer and need so it all fits on the form. I poured over the FM help and couldn't find a solution. Any ideas?

  30. I have a field formatted so that it picks values from a value list. The system is built on FMPA9 on MacOS X 10.5.2 International with Greek enabled. All is well except... When I format the field to be a pop-up menu (as opposed to, say, a drop-down list), and then I click on it to expand the menu so I can pick a value from it, all values in the list show in the wrong font, gibberish-like. If I go ahead and actually do select a value, then the pop-up menu goes away and the selected value sure enough shows up in its proper greek capable font. The database record creation configuration is set to match this: the overall layout table has record creation ability in the first portal and the first portal has record creation ability in the second portal.     Hello. I'm in the process of designing a database that keeps track of inventory and clients. As inventory is tracked through the database, I thought it would be easy to add an estimate layout where I can create an invoice (so to speak) for a client.     Hi, Sorry if this has been covered before, but I'm currently stuck on this one issue. I have a portal displaying a list of cases, and if the user clicks on one of them it displays details of that case in the other half of the screen. What I'd like to do is allow the user to preform a search using any of the fields in the "details" half, and then display the found results in the portal.   55. Hello, I want to print a layout content wich is bigger than A4 size (please don't ask to re-arrange the layout because it's dam'n complex :-)). For that I use the resize factor in % located in print driver. Doing a print downsize doesn't reduce the content of the layout to fit the page (A4), in fact, the visible - not reduced layout content - is shrinked according to the value specified in a smaller region in A4 page during print, cutting the right and bottom section of the layout. At this time, when there are no invoice records for that client, the layout in preview mode is blank. Is there a way to have the layout display the other content even if there are no invoice records?   57. I've got a layout in which I have a portal which has two different checkboxes. All of the fields on the layout are supposed to be readonly. I unchecked both enter in browse and find. However, when I use this form I can uncheck one of the fields but I cannot check it. The other field cannot be modified at all. I've also set the layout without automatic updates but that only means I get a reminder to save the changes. What is allowing this to happen? Both fields have value lists which are identical (as far as I can see) with one value of "Yes". What am I overlooking?

    Hi all - It's been awhile since I have posted. I ran into a little something that I can't seem to come up with a solution for. Hoping you can help..... What I want to do is create a list of items in a single field on a single record and use the contents of that single field as a value list. The problem I have is that when you use that field in the value list definition and then assign that value list to a field as a drop down list, FileMaker sorts the values alphabetically.   59. I have recently downloaded some sample files from this forum and have noticed that the field names do not display in the Layout Mode. It appears that when in Layout Mode the data from the active field is being displayed. In order to see the field name I must double-click on the field to display the Field/Control Setup window. Any clue what is going on here? Is this possibly due to the original file being an earlier version of Filemaker. I am using Filemaker Pro 9. Can this be changed? Thanks for your input

    Hi, I'm extremely lost so any help is muchly appreciated. I was getting along fine producing reports by printing the layouts in filemaker as pdf. But now my reports are getting more complex, with different combinations and headings etc, I figured, why not produce a caculated field, that when exported, will produce an html version of the report. The only problem with this is headers and footers (as well as footer on the last page - for totals, and making sure group headers aren't on their own at the bottom of each page). This "home page" consists of 4 buttons which link to the 4 different layouts that I have. 2 are data entry layouts (donors & donations). The other 2 are reports. I am using the webviewer to see these and a script to go to next page etc. It USED to work when I had filemaker 8.5 and quicktime 7.1.5 installed.   64. Is there a way to specify a specific Portal Row in a calculation in a way that is similar to specifying a specific repetition in a Repeating Field? For instance, if it were a repeating field and I wanted the 4th repetition, I would write "Field1[4]". If I want the data from Field1 in the fourth portal row, how would I do that? I want to set it up so that when the checkbox is NOT checked, the text is invisible (that is, the same color as the background) and when it is checked, the text is bright red.   67. In my experimentation with custom menus, I created a new menu set and then added some custom menu items. It seems that once you create an item, you can not delete it without deleting the whole menu set and starting over. I created a menu set for a particular layout and added a custom menu "Job Scripts". When I discovered that you CAN indeed delete the [scripts] menu from your set and create your own custom Scripts menu with no naming conflict, I did just that.   69. I have a drop down list for "part numbers" in upper case & "description" in title case in an inventory database containig over 17,000 records. Can I format the drop down lists to show in caps lock or title case? Some people who have entered data have entered them in all different case formats so the drop down list looks very messy.

    I am having a slight issue with printing in table-view. Currently I am displaying data from about 20 fields and originally Filemaker would cut off some of the viewable fields. At the moment to correct this problem I have shrunk the text so that it will all fit onto one page. I am wondering if FileMaker offers options similar to excel that allows the user to define the printable area, so I don't have to worry about resizing. Also related to this topic, I'm wondering if I can word-wrap in the table view fields. This would greatly reduce the need for space. So if there is a solution to either of these topics that would help the database Thanks

    Hello, I have a letterhead graphic, created by a screenshot, which prints clearly out of Preview (a std. Mac graphics app), but which gets very blurry when printed out of FileMaker, either as an object on the layout or as a graphic within a container field.     I have a line items file containing products. Each product is in a single category. I have a report which shows how many of each product is in each category. The report is sorted, descending, by the number of products. Some categories have around 100 products. Is it possible to get a top ten list of products in each category? The only way I can think of to do this is to export the report to a different file and loop through the products in each category using a variable 'counter'. Is there a better way? Thanks, ft.

Currently the database pulls the pricing from the other via a sales ID. This works great but there are approximately 106 items to sell. I want the script for the "Preview" button to open a new window, go to another layout (2nd layout) in that new window and go into preview mode for that 2nd layout in that new window. I can get the new window to open and get the new layout (2nd layout) into preview mode successfully.   87. Greetings, all. I have two Portals on a layout. Portal A has multiple lines of data. The intention is for each record in portal A to be copied to records in Portal B. In actuality, my script (currently using mostly Set Field) would take data from, say, Line 1 of Portal A, transfer it to Line 1 of Portal B, return to Portal A and take data from Line 2, transferring it to Line 2 in Portal B. etc. etc. Suggestions, please?

I have the field set as a popup list using the Customer table - 1st field set to CustomerID and the 2nd field set to Customer Full name and I'm showing only the Customer Full Name.     I have a table occurrence for customers-invoices which uses the following criteria: _kp_customers_id = _kf_customers_id zc_date_low <= order_date zc_date_high >= order_date When I change the dates, the portal records don't update based on the new filter critera. If I leave the layout and return; however, the records on the portal are correct. I am assuming that the criteria is working properly, there is just something that keeps the portal from updating after changing the criteria. What am I missing? Thanks.

I want those records to display in chronological order with the most recent class showing at the top of the page. Right now, I'm stuck on how to get the different job operations to show up in a portal so that the user can select from them, then assign employees and estimates for them.
