FileMaker Server General Discussions

  1. We recently upgraded and have a Toshiba SG20 we are looking to sell cheap. It comes with 2 drives, Wireless card and is preloaded with Fm server 5.5(Legit Copy) along with the Web Browser Admin Interface. Was a great box for us. Anyone needing Fm Server 5.5 I would reccomend this box. If interested please leave a post/pm me here or contact me via email. Cheers, Michael

  2. I need to upload PDF files through a web browser into Filemaker and also download PDF files from Filemaker over the web. (The database will be hosted on a Mac using FM Server Advanced) Object: I want to publish a PDF file in Filemaker that a client can view on the web, then make any corrections they need and upload the amended file back into Filemaker (or a folder or however it will work) Many thanks in advance for your help Peter

  3. Hello, I'm pretty new to Filemaker Pro Adv. 8.5. I would like to setup a basic network so that I can have about 3-4 clients on this network. I'm having trouble figuring out what exactly I need to do to be able to have the computers on the LAN network, along with having my computer at home be able to access the database here at work. (I'm guessing that would be the WAN network) Thanks I'd really appreciate any help.

MacG5 running 10.4.8, FMS8A v.4, My files appear in IWP, and I can access them via remote client, Blackbelt, and CWP using FX.php. But.... in the WPAC under published databases, nothing appears. Also, when I use the WPAC to change anything, like shutting off IWP, it tells me I have to restart the web server and the administration console. I have turned everything off and restarted the server, FMS8A via the FMS Amin Console, restarted the WPE, and still get this same set of red messages. Anyone have any ideas.

  5. Help! I may be panicking needlessly; God, I hope so. I thought a file didn't update its date/timestamp (when being served) until the file was closed. I just looked at our file (through Admin). Both services are running (normal). Database status is normal on all. But the date/timestamp says 45 minutes ago and we have NOT stopped serves or closed the databases! I feel my fingers going weak. Please tell I'm wrong and a served file sometimes updates this date/timestamp even when not closed. Please tell me that. It performed a backup at 4pm. The last User signed off at 5:11. The timestamp is 5:15. L

  6. We have Filemaker Server 8.0v4 running on a very fast Windows 2003 machine w/ 2gig of ram. I have 2 primary filemaker files being served on this box which are 600mg & 800mg each. Every 3 hours we backup the data using the Filemaker Server backup schedule. When the backup runs the machine bogs down and runs very slow. Even the FM clients run extremely slow in Filemaker. This lasts about 5-6 minutes before normal speed/operation resumes. Is there anything that we can do about this? I have called Filemaker Support and they didn't have any suggestions. They didn't even provide me with a general idea of how long the backup should take given our file sizes. …

  7. Everyone, I'm quite proficient at Filemaker but I'm new to the world of VPN. What I've got (on a Mac) is FileMaker Server 8, a software-based VPN (VPN Tracker Server) running behind a hardware Firewall (Watchguard). On the Firewall, only IPSec ports are opened. There is NO specific rule for ports 5003 (TCP/UDP) because my assumption is that once I'm connected with the VPN, all the traffic will go through the IPSec tunnel. The result is that from the remote location I can "see" my hosted files (I had to add a "favorite server" for that) BUT, I cannot open them. When trying to open a file, FileMaker asks for my username/password (so it IS actu…

  8. When closing the laptop or when the laptop goes to sleep Filemaker doesn't find it's connection anymore. It works fine on the desktops but the laptops show the error message: "communication with the host was interrupted and could not be re-established. (-3284)". Can you tell me if using Fm server 8 resolves this problem? Other programs like the organizer calendar don't have this connection problem, when you open your laptop the connection is immediately re-established. Thank you.

  9. I'm completely new to peer to peer sharing... is there a way to automate the process of opening and hosting the file (or opening as a client) that would make it transparent to the user? Here's what I have in mind: I have only two users on two PCs in a peer to peer network. Assume both PCs are always up and running. I'd like either one of them to be able to run the solution without knowing or caring whether they are hosting or using as client. In other words: it just works. Looked at some script steps but it appears that they only open dialogs that then require user input... and it looks like the user would have to know whether to host it or try to use it…

  10. Hi Guys! I am purchasing Server 8 this week but am looking to run it on XP Pro SP2. My question is regarding concurrent web connections. What is the max count. I know IIS 5.1 on XP Pro is limited to 10, is this going to affect FM Server 8 and limit that to 10. Thanks.

  11. Help! I have just installed FMS 5.5 and copied the database that we want to share to the FMP directory. I opened the database directly and set it to multiuser, closed it, and restarted the FMS service (Windows Server 2003). The database opens fine on the first client (FMP 6.0v4) but I get a "# of licenses exceeded" error when I try to open the DB on additional computers. 12. I have five FM files on FMS7. One is an opener file so to speak (it is on the server, not on clients) with checkboxes for each of the other four. The opener file sets a global field based on the user's login name. After selecting which of the other four files a user wants to open, s/he clicks "OK" and those files open. The login name is then used in all the other, newly opened files, for entry in certain fields. To ensure that the login name is used in each of the other four databases, I want to circumvent the user from opening these files directly (Open Remote and Open Recent). I realize I could consolidate all the files into one, and there may be a way to have the …

  13. Hi - I'm trying to implement a filemaker setup which shares data between two offices connected via a WAN VPN. In initial testing, it's become obvious that we need to upgrade the bandwidth of one of the offices. Currently, one office has a 768/768 connection, while the other is 384/384. However, I haven't been able to find any specs on what is actually required to do this. I have seen posts that show that other people have been able to successfully share a database over a WAN, but haven't found any details. SO, my question is: 1) What is the minimum amount of upload and download bandwidth needed to share a Filemaker database (using the FM client, not the web client) …

Is there anybody know why it works at first time and then didn't work on sharing after reinstall OS ? :P

  17. I want to aggregate selected content from a large number of web sites that are maintained by a variety of groups in my organization, for the purpose of producing a portal or master catalog. One possible approach is to supply appropriate XML tags to be inserted into individual sites, then crawl the sites to pull the content into FileMaker Server. Someone has suggested to me that the FileMaker Web Viewer functionality might be part of the solution, but I did not get clarity on precisely how that would work. I would be interested in hearing about alternative approaches. Thanks in advance.

Can't seem to get this working. In the server (8.0v4) auto update folder I have added zippscript which I know isn't on any of the clients. Also on the client tab on the server console I have the auto update selected. On the client machine I tested using 8.5v1 Advanced I connected to one of the databases hosted (with Auto update plugin ticked) and was hoping for it to look on the server and see that there was a new plug-in and download it but nothing? Is there something else I need to do? Some help would be most excellent! Thanks

  25. I am working with a small non-profit. We usually have 2 concurrent users on a development/fundraising db, rarely up to 4 concurrent users. We own 7 licenses, but recently the library db has moved to the web view method and that seems to satisfy that group. That db was used primarily in a read only mode, so the web viewer is ideal for that. Lately we have added a bunch of tables to the more intensively used database and more and more I seet the coffee cup or get weird results, like being moved to a layout I was not using. I am wondering if this meeans time to try to get FMP Server? Is there something I should read on this? This is an all windows environmen…

  26. Hi, we have a Windows Server 2003 Standard and I have installed FileMaker Server 8v4. I have put a file in the databases folder on the server, started the service and have made sure that the proper ports are open on our router...although this should not matter since our workstations are on the same subnet. But when I try to open the file from our workstation, I can't see the file (clicking on remote, and typing in the ip does not show anything) Yet if I open the file as shared on one of our workstations, I can see it being shared on that machine. The windows server also has FileMaker Server 5.5 installed and working on it. When I stop the FileMaker Serv…

  28. Hi Everyone : Good News for Windows users that want to use FileMaker Server Advanced, Apache and Windows. While developing our new product "BlackBelt" http://fmwebschool.com/frm/index.php?topic=836.0 (allows you to run CDML on FileMaker 7-8.5) we needed to test in multiple server environments. We discovered by simply adding a line of code to the Apache httpd file and a couple lines of code to a couple other files we were able to run FMSA on Windows. Up until now, only IIS was the supported server to run the FileMaker Server Advanced Web Publishing Engine. However, Apache is a very popular web server for both Windows and Mac platforms and includes a lot o…

  30. Hi, I have been approached to build a database for a small library operation, that journals can be borrowed from etc. The client has asked for it to be accessible from the web (outside our intranet), what Filemaker software do I need to get to do this - I was thinking Filemaker 8.5 Advanced to do the development in, and then Advanced Server to roll it out on... do I need a special computer to run it off - or can it run on a web server? 32. Folks, I'm tasked with migrating data from FM Server 8 to SQL Server 2005. I was trying to use the ODBC driver for FM Server, and the SQL Server 2005 Data Import functionality. I keep having odd and inexplicable OLE and COM errors when trying to move the data (less than 100'000 rows - really not a huge amount). Any ideas? Is there another way to do this efficiently (on about 25 tables or so)? What can I check or tweak to make the import work? I have the same problems when trying to migrate the FM data to MS Access 2003, too. Any help would be highly appreciated !

  35. I'm probably missing something obvious here... FMS 8.0 on Win won't seem to follow shortcuts to open db's. The help file and admin guide says I can put shortcuts to databases in the default Data/Databases folder, and it will open those files. It doesn't. No errors in the log, so it appears to be not even attempting to open them. If I put the same files in that same default folder (the files themselves rather than shortcuts) they open fine. Same thing if I add their current location as the alternate default folder. But I'd rather use the shortcut method if I could get it to work. Thanks for any help...

  36. Okay - I have gotten down to the root of my problem. Can someone tell me if/how I can fix it, please? The problem of the unexpected end of file error seems to be due to a Java incompatibility. I found Win boxes on which identical versions of IE are running. The one using the java plugin 1.5.0_06 works; the one using 1.5.0_09 doesn't. Is there any way to update my servers to gain compatibility with the newer plug-in. I know nothing about how java works.

  39. I am running 5.5 unltd on OS 9.2. I have a Webstar 4.5 (apache) front door that connects to a separate filemaker box via the web connector. For some reason calls to filemaker from browsers have started to produce an end-of-file error. It is intermittent, and possibly fixed by restarting the browser that is being used to access filemaker. However, a few months ago, I tried to use this feature while connected to a flakey wireless connection. My connection dropped in the midst of processing, and I was left with a "ghost account" -- the account had no name or password, and could not be edited, deleted, or disabled. 43. Hi, I am new to both MACs and FileMaker (although I am familiar with databases). I would like to automate the opening of FileMaker (Pro 8 Vn 1 - not a Sever version) and two databases on a MAC server (OS Tiger) so that they are available via IWP. If the file is shared, you can use the Open Remote command to open the file on the network. Should he get FMP network version. Thanks, Dout T.

  59. FileMaker Server v7 - v11 · Started by bumblect,

When trying to launch a particular database on 8 server. I open the database and it goes into "checking" then immediatly back to "closed". Now if I go into the file permissions and change them to read only it opens without problem. This would be fine except the database isnt modifiable of course. Im hoping someone has ran into this problem before and can provide some insight?

  60. I have a windows 2003 Enterprise Server running FM server 5.5 successfully. We are trying to set up our new FM8 files and have a second server in the domain also running 2003 Enterprise Server with FM server 8. Server #1 with FM 5.5 - works perfectly Server #2 with FM 8 - services are started, and databases are sort of accessible in that they can be seen and opened - BUT - upon opening the served files an error comes up [pardon the paraphrasing]: Unable to host filemaker file as the filemaker service is aleady in use. The file functions except the annoying error message AND all container fields "loose" their contents - like all logos were not mapped. FYI all imag…

We have had this happening to our server for a while, but how it happens to the servers at one of our other divisions. when I go into the admin console, either locally or remote, and click through the tabs, I see strange results. (see the attached PDF) On the first image, it show ODBC and JDBC connections set to 0. This should be 50. Web Publishing Connections should be 250, I believe. Under the Minimum idle time allowed... I don't know off the top of my head what this should be, but the time that is in there is the system time when I opened the properties dialog box. The second image is pretty self explanatory. 62. HOw do I remove FMP 5 Server from a PC running Windows? I recently upgraded to FMP 8 running a 12 file dbase and for each file an error message says I cant share files as someone else on the computer already is. I thought I'd remove the FMP 5 server - someone tried to do it for me but now I have 6 compnents left which I cant delete. Help!

  63. Hi everyone, I'm real green with instant web publishing. I'm using FileMaker Pro 8 I can get it to work great on another Mac Computer (Safari - web brower) within my own home. However, how can I get my mother-in-law who lives hundreds of miles away to help me with data entry? I have a Static IP Address from BellSouth (my internet provider) - Do I need this Static IP Address? When I switch my FM database Instant Web Publishing to "On", the URL is just very short (example: http://11.1.1.1/). The short URL works great within my own home, but not outside my local network. I'm not sure if this means anything, but - when I type my Static IP Address…

  64. A clients' databases have full access in FMP, but when they are hosted on Server 8 Adv the same user does not have access to ScriptMaker, Accts & Privileges, and other admin tasks. This is the first large set of db's I have hosted with any FM8 app/svr. I have deleted the user created by the upgrade process from FM6, and created a new user from scratch. Everything in the Svr Admin looks correct. Any ideas are greatly appreciated!

  65. Hello all, I am running FMS 5.5 on Mac OS 10.2. When I go to start the server, I get an error message that reads "Unable to Start Server. Another instance of FileMaker Server is already running. Requested command has not been executed." I guess the best thing to do would be to restore from a backup; however, I was wondering if anybody had any better ideas. Could this error stem from a corrupted file? Thanks in advance for any advice/help. JPM

  66. I'm not sure if this is the right forum to post this topic in, feel free to move it. We recently moved our filemaker server onto another server but left up the old one, a user wasn't aware of the fact and entered a massive amount of data into the database. Is there an application that can compare the two databases list the changes and update the current database file? I googled it and all that came up was genie update which apparently is dead. Thanks ahead of time :

  67. I have never worked with FM server before, and am trying to move a file that was previously used locally on my computer. I want to have it on the server so it can be accessed by more than one person at a time. I moved the file to the FM 8 Server, and am able to access the file across the network, but I am unable to modify it. When I try to do any modification, I get an error that says "This action cannot be performed because this file is not modifiable." Before moving the file to the server, I created an admin login with full access, and a user login with write only access. This was done on the local file. I get the same error message with either login when …

  69. Hey guys, The tech support guy at Filemaker said to post in this forum cause you guys are the guru's and they don't support server 5 and filemaker pro 5 anymore. I hope you can help me. I have a client that has been running filemaker server and filemaker pro 5 for the last 6 years or so. They have a custom built database that has 18 fp5 files associated with. This company has moved locations 2 times this year, and this is where the problems start. The fm server 5 runs on a windows 2003 server with sp1. The clients run on win xp pro sp2. 70. FileMaker Server v7 - v11 · Started by slytle,

I have built a nice server based time clock solution. The only problem is that someone figured out that by changing the time on their computer, they can clock in at any time they want to. Short of locking the System Prefs on everyones computers, or firing someone for forging their timecards, is there a way to fix this? Is there a way I could use the time on a remote computer for my timestamps? I have a computer that I can dedicate to the cause. TIA, .sly

  71. I just inherited a Filemaker server version 3.0v4 on Mac OS9 with client Filemaker Pro 4.1 on Windows 2000. I don't know what the administrator's password is. Is there a way to find out the password? Also, I am new to Filemaker, is there resources on these old versions that I can learn, since resources for old versions are hard to find.

  73. We have a client runing Filemaker Server on Windows and there web sites are deployed on Apache Servers running on Unix. They would like to publish filemaker databases on their web server but are not interested in using IIS for security reasons, but might consider Apache on OS X. Can WPE be installed on Windows and the Web Server Module and Admin Console on Apache on OS X. is there some other solution that might work in this situation? Or can I present info that would alleviate their security concerns on IIS? Any advice appreciated. Werner

  74. Hi, I'm having a problem with the company database. We are using FM Server 8 and some FMP8, FMP8.5 and FMP8A. All of them have their own license. Now we cannot work anybody!! As soon as we open the main file, the server says that the maximum number of licensed users have been reach blablabla... I tested with only my license and the same message appears. It seems that FMServer is too dumb to figure out that I'm connecting with the same computer. Does someone has a solution? Thanx

  75. I'm converting a sizeable FM6 system to FM8 and am attempting to get best performance with respect to file references. At the moment I am making all file references the same format as follows: fmnet:/12.34.56.78/filename fmnet:/*/filename file:/filename This is as optimised as I can think for a server which is at 12.34.56.78. The "*" option is superfluous, however it gives me the opportunity to switch ip addresses on the server without too much impact in a live system. Originally I just had the "file" method, but there is a performance increase when you target the server using "fmnet" Any one think of anything better?

  76. What is the best system configuration for running FMP Server 8 on a local network, with only internal workstations accessing. Its going to grow into a pretty extensive database, with over 20 tables with about 25,000 records in each. I am currenly using XP Pro, with 1 gig of ram. Does hard drive speed have anything to do with it? Any ideas....

I have created a hire tracking and quotation solution using FMpro 8/8.5 which has seperate data and interface files. The interface files are stored locally and on launch open the data file by first looking up a local IP address and if that fails, looking up our external IP address (port 5003 open). Only needing a few clients, we opted for a 5 license pack of FMpro. Hi, I have a client that is getting ready to upgrade their existing FM (7) solution and they are asking for some advice. They design/print stickers. So, there are graphics files involved here. At the moment, I have them talked into having a stand alone machine to run Server 8.0v4 (with Mac OSX Server as operating system). We are trying now to decide about the best performance options for storing (or holding references) to the graphics. I essentially outlined two options for them: 1 - Hold the graphics (max 72 dpi) in the FM database container fields. But they'd have to save them as well on another drive where the art guy would access them and edit them as necess…

  80. Hi this is the first datbase I have developed which is based around project management and billing. I have a query regarding synchronising records. The database will be set up on the server, which will communicate with office based computers as well as laptops. scenerio: If a laptop is used in an outside meeting (no links to the server) and the person has made changes to the records, on return and logging in with the server, is filemaker automatically updated? When I host my database using the following calculation: [color:red]FieldNames (Get ( FileName ) ; Get ( LayoutName ) ) it returns all the field names on the current layout, as expected. When I then host this same file on FM Server that same calculation returns ?. 83. We just upgraded our FM server from version 7 to 8.0v4. Everything seemed to go successfully until it came time to open files. I have 89 files being hosted. 85 of those files open fine. However, I have four that won't open. When I look at the FM Server logs it shows errors for these files stating that they could not be opened because they may be damaged. I have run each file through FM 8 Recover. They still will not open in FM Server 8. They open up fine directly through FM Pro 8 and 8.5. I would appreciate any assistance, especially since one of these is our main database file.

  84. I would think that this was asked a million times already, but I can't find a good response. Our university has a dependency on Apache 2.2 (apache2 for the searchbots) for the purposes of web-based authentication. We are using FM Server 8 Advanced and can't seem to get the mod_jk_fm.so to load. Apache 2 says it's "garbled" and we think that it might be only good to work with Apache 1.3. Which would stink. The httpd.conf file syntax is fine otherwise, except when that module is called. Calling FM, they gave me the standard line, "It's only supported on Apache 1.3" but... that can't be, right? Has anyone any resources for deploying Apache 2.2 with …

  85. I have a situation: FMP Server 5.5 is hosting 49 databases but for some reason after stopping and starting the server one database is not listed on the available databases anymore. A little background: Earlier I had a corupt database and had to restore from backup. During this time of trying to figure out what was wrong the FMP Server had to be stopped unexpectedly twice. The database that had to be restored is not the same as the one that is not listed. I have already stopped FMP server and rebooted the computer and restarted FMP but still the database is not listed. I am able to open that database as a standalone connection. Any ideas?

  86. I have a Win 2003 box running FM Server 5 with about 20 macs as clients. This setup works fine about 90% of the time. Occasionally, however, the client just hangs when I click on "hosts". Sometimes I can switch to the classic version of FM 5.5 on the clients and they can connect fine, sometimes that doesn't work either. This has never been a problem with the PCs we have as clients, either. Sometimes just one computer has problems connecting, other times none of them can connect until someone else logs off. Some possible problems I have already crossed off the list: restarted the server (had the problem again the next day) changed the switch that the server was co…

General question about FMP and FMP Server. I have a general DB file on temp server 1 (FMP server running). Move this file to another folder on a permanent server because the temp was decomissioned. During this movement, the file seemed to lock me out as the admin. Message: Can't modify pops up. How can I get back into file options to change/address this problem? I do not have FMP server training so I don't know the concepts behind the potential problem (reason for asking). I just want my group to be able to use this file and understand why the file changes it's options by moving between folders and servers?

The identifier for the web publishing engine disappears and I have to re-enter it. This seems really counter to any software I've ever used. Am I missing something? Hello, I am having problems hosting the FM solution "Work Requests". It seems that FMPro clients see an incomplete UI; there are missing file placeholders, no labels on buttons, etc. It seems the functionality is still there, it's just that one has to have memorized the UI completely. In web version (hosted through CWP in Server 8 Advanced) certain graphic elements are also missing. My feeling is that these two issues are related, but I am at a loss to figure it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
