FileMaker Pro v7 – v11

When I run my script to save as a PDF, I am able to click on the button 2 or 3 times before Filemaker crashes and close. I have ran the Debug script and it seems like it comes from the Save as a PDF. The message I get when the application close is related to a dli_dll.dll file problem. Has this problem happened to anyone else? What can I do to solve the issue ? It really slow down my work and need to find a solution.

We have a database thats not letting us enter new records, when I press 'cntrl + n' or even when I select it from the menu it brings up a blank page and after I complete entering the new info and go to add another record it gives me this warning message, well actually its blank but has two options "Revert Record" or "Cancel" Whats causing this? Hi Folks, Two related questions... I'm new to Filemaker and am creating an events/contact management database. For peoples' contact information I'd like to use value list for state, city, and country. Question 1: Does anyone have predefined value list of the above they are willing to share? I know this is all online but it's very time consuming to copy and paste hundreds of entries into FM. Question 2: How do you make these value list conditional so when, say, NY is selected the correct cities display? Thanks.

This may not be the right forum for this question. I keep records of bills for my business in FM7 on a Mac using OS 10.4 For some reason about 170 of my records in a file of about 500 records are missing. I'm sure I didn't inadvertantly delete them, nor are they omitted. Is there any way to fix a file like this or do I have to restore everything from paper backups?

Hi, I'm finally going to version 8.5. I bought advanced this time ( I did not have developer in the past). While reading about conversions, on the filemaker site it is written that "files should be recovered and then compressed before conversion to version 7 and higher". That is big news to me as I was always told that recovers are to be avoided but in dire circonstances. My question is the following: should I then recover and compress with my 8.5 advanced in the old format ( i.e. .fp5 format) and then convert so as to have the advantage of having the developer report of the old version handy? Is anyone else having a problem with multiple screen redraws. After searching on this topic, I found that it is related to having overlapping and/or grouped objects. But, it only started after upgrading to 8.5.

What do I need to run FileMaker 8.5 on a Linux machine?

I am currently running a FM6Pro database with 8 users sharing the files over the network. We have recently upgraded our network and I will now need to add 3 remote users who will connect using the terminal server. I don't know anything about this stuff and my knowledge of filemaker is limited. My questions are: 1. Where is the optimal place for the files to reside (server, terminal server, should it be on its own machine) 2. Should the answer to #1 also be the host? 3. What versions of Filemaker do we need to upgrade to in order to have 8 local users and 3 remote users? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi, I have a 8.5v1 database that has this weird issue that I've never seen before. In one of the tables, when I do a search on a particular ID, I always get a blank record as one of the records in the search results. If I delete that record, do the search again, it reappears. If I view all records in the table, there are no blank records. It's messing up my scripting and I'm at a loss to figure out how to handle it. Has anyone seen this type of behavior before? Hi all, Does anyone know of a way to create page breaks in reports dynamically? Specifically, I'm trying to generate a multi-page report that's made of one, multi-page-spanning field, whose contents vary greatly in length. After calculating the page count, I'd like my script to set more data at the end of the text field and have it start at the top of what would be the next page. I'll have to repeat this for a third section. To help understand my goal, the text field is for compiling legal agreements by combining canned text with variable data that's entered via the GUI in another layout. I have recently upgraded to v8.5 Advanced and am experiencing some weird behavior on my layouts. When I add a field I cannot see it (although it is there, I can see the field label). When I set borders I cannot see them. I cannot see the handles when the field is selected. In Browse Mode I cannot see the cursor when I enter the field and I cannot see text as I type. But when I click out of the field the text appears. I have been using FileMaker since v2 and have never experienced this sort of behavior. Any thoughts?

Dear All, I used to have a set of FileMaker buttons possibly downloaded from Blue World (now call omnipilot). Unfortunately, my hard disk crashed and I lost it. This set of buttons is for FileMaker 4.x but it was so well done that I still see it in a number of FM6 solutions. Just wander if anyone have a copy to share? I gave a friend a program for his music (FM 8 Advance). After 200 entries or so the program crash or won't accept anymore data. Is not the first time I have this complaint. He had plenty of RAM and H.D. space to work it. This never happens while using FM 6. What can I do to prevent this?

Is there anyway to lock a record? I would like to be able to make a specific record uneditable given a setting in a field. For example: I have a checkbox field called "lock record" set to a boolean value and if it is set to yes, I don't want the rest of the fields on the specific record to be edited. Is this possible? I have no problem with FM8 in my PC. Although my files are small. Another friend send me the following error: Microsoft inform that there is a problem with the program. Microsoft? One of the most recent Windows XP security updates has broken FM 8-FM 8.5 runtimes. (It might affect more those are just the only ones I have to try). The application will launch once, and then quit running the next time they try and launch it. As of right now I have only found one way to fix this issue: 1) Moved all the runtime dll's to the system32 folder. 2) deleted msvcp71.dll and msvcr71.dll from the runtime because there is one in the system32 folder 3) Changed the program compatablities to run as a Windows 98 and input settings box checked. 4) Turn off advanced attributes for "file is ready for archiving" and "for fast searching" This seems to…

:P I need to have FMP automatically delete duplicate records down to a specific field when generating a report! My database has field like division, department, goal, objective, tasks... When I generate a report that tells a division each objective it has, there are many duplications because there is a record for each task (which may be 4 to 6 under each objective) I can clean these manually but there must be a way to auto delete duplications at the objective field level for this report!?

Hi, I've a fille names AAAA.fp7 which my development file For upgarding the solution I need to import it's previous version also named AAAA.fp7 (that's the source fie) but which is located in another folder. If I open the dev file, The window name is AAAA, and if I open simultaneously the source file, it's window is named AAAA -2 I want to get the next serial value of the source file to put in my dev file. My script is in my dev file. How can I get the source file next serial value, because the GetNextSerialValue requires a filename, which is the same for both files here. Hey Everyone, I've got an issue trying to upgrade my FileMaker Pro 8.5v1 installation to 8.5v2. Everytime I try to run the installer, it tells me "The updater cannot find a qualifying product on the system." The funny thing is, I get the same problem on my work computer, and my home computer (PCs). To make that even funnier (although, strangely enough, I'm not laughing), I get the same problems on my FileMaker Server 7, and Server 8 computers (WinServer 2003). Has anyone ever come across any virii that effects Filemaker? Say one that "eats" layouts? Recently a layout developed a weird graphical glitch in which a small amount of pixelization began just over a button, it looked kind of like static building up until it had "eaten away" the button leaving a blue square. It spread and eventually ate the entire layout, I quickly duplicated the layout and the duplicate is fine but the origional is just a blank page now. I've came across a problem. Every computer in our company that Runs IE7 cannot keep filemaker open. It opens once, and runs fine, but if the minimize it, or shut if off, it will never open again. (Until you reboot, then the same thing happens.) This seems to have happened as soon as we upgraded to IE7. Anyone else have this issue? Anyone else willing to give it a try so we can make absolutley positive thats the issue? It only happens with a runtime.

We have run into this problem since version 7 of FM. We are running windows XP machines and when we close FM and then come back later and try to start it again , most of the time we need to go into the task manager and stop the filemaker which is still running as a process., This is happenning on about 10 machines. I have had this annoyance since we first started using FM7. Our company lists chemical names in many of our databases. These are not covered by the spell check dictionaries and show up as underlined. I have tried to turn off the spell check feature in the file options tab, but it always turns itself back on the next time I launch the application. Is there a way to turn it off once and for all?

Is there an FM8 function which will allow me to move back to the previous window? ie. to be able to go to the last / previous active window, without having to specify that previous window by name. Something like the "Back" button in Internet Explorer. I can do it by having a separate table called "last window name" to hold the name of the current window before navigating to the second window, thus allowing me to go back to window I last came from. But this is tedious. Is there a simpler way? thanks

I have experienced problems printing large found sets in 8V5. When printing from a complex layout, ie Body,summary, sub-summary, trailing grand summary, etc, and the found set is greater than 300 (we sometimes have found sets on the order of 1200) FM 8v5 will get through printing some of the records and then the layout goes squirrely and garbled and the pages start printing blank. I have updated the drivers, tried 3 different printers, HP9000;HP8100;HP4050 and all do the same thing. This used to work fine on FM6.0. We stepped back through the versions of 8 and have found that the problem does not occur on 8v1 so we currently do our printing from a PC with 8v1 installe…

Hi all. Just got the disc, and have a big problem. The installer app shows up as a document, and no amount of digging into the file settings or the package contents have helped. Granted it's a Carbon app and I can't remember what's what with the file bits, but I've tried quite a bit of futzing with Xray. I tried making a new admin account (advice of the FM phone tech) - no luck. Full perms fixup - no luck. Fixup of the Installer Vise app inside the package - no luck. Like I said, I'm a little lost with a Carbon app, but frankly the Info bits seem munged up to me. Any help appreciated!!

I have used FM for some years but by no means can claim to be anything but a novice user, I just open the program and use the existing databases so I hope I can make my problem clear. A couple of times this week when I have opened two different FM databases I have received a screen prompting me to define the database. I have never had to do this before so I responded by "cancel" to find to no data in the DB. Fortunately our data is backed up nightly so I am able to recover the missing data. is it possible to automatically resize the actual filemaker window from inside filemaker. I am working on a runtime solution and really need the program window to be maximised but out to the size of the filemaker window which I need set to be set to 900 x 680

Is it possible to completely remove access to the layout browser completely. I know I can close the status area before I create a standalone database but the user would still have access to the different layouts through the menu at the lower left hand side where the zoom menu is located. Can anyone tell me if that area can be removed or stop access to the layouts through it?

We had a problem with a user being disconnected from the FM server randomly(or so we thought). We tested just about everyting, network cables, switches, gave her a new Mac... still got disconnected. She is on the latest client (8.5), and our server is updated (8.0v4) and still we couldn't figure it out. Then we noticed that the time on her computer was way off (for invoicing she changes the date on her computer so that the invoices end up in the correct month for accounting), and that she only gets disconnected during the times she sets her clock back. Hi Folks, I am considering the use of Filemaker for an internal database for an organization of about 5 people. One of their concerns is the interoperability of filemaker with open source document formats such as Open Office. I think their main concern is that filemaker will work with other systems they have in place, open source or commercial. Too boot, they wanted to know if there is any other open source database software comparable to filemaker. I'm familiar with filemaker but on these two issues a bit lost. Can anyone shed some light on this or at least point me in the right direction to ask. Filemaker wasn't able to answer these questions. Thanks!

Hi everyone, I'm working with a database solution here at work where we track a lot of client data. We have a request file that gives us a list of clients who have requested our product. This table, with data entered by import, now contains nearly .5 Million records. Then, we have another table in the same file, that contains records showing how we processed those requests. Hi, I noticed that FMP 8.0 use a lot of CPU. When it is idle with no files opened, FM takes around 30%+ and when a file is open the percentage jumps to 70%. Is that normal? Even an image processing software on idle does not take 20%.

I have a file that I converted a while ago and I have been using it without a problem. All of a sudden I can't import or get to Define-->database without FM hanging and causing a force quit. I also converted the original file again and it does the same thing. The original was in FM6. I can open the file but that is all I can do. Does anyone have any suggestions at all?

I have my FM fields all set to the default font Helvetica, 10 pt. Whenever I copy a new email address from my mail program and paste it into the appropriate FM field, it keeps the mail program's font characteristics (Verdana, 12 pt.) rather than changing to the default characteristics of the FM field. Is there a way to make FM change the pasted text to the default font?

Hi, Obviously, variables should be faster than globals, but in fact that's wrong. Globals are much faster than variables ! I've made a counting loop with FM 8's script variables and the same script with old school golbals fields. Guess what ? Globals are much faster, either on a standolne solution or through networking with FM 8.0v4 networking. counting to 500 000 with globals }:| 55s, with $avariable : 79s ! That's for local. For WAN performanace with 8.04 server that's 11s vs 16s for counting to 100 000, and 56 vs 86 for 500 000. (at least local and WAN performance is almost the same, which is perferctly normal since everything is processed …

I have no experience with File Maker Server or File Maker Pro so I am hoping someone can help me here? All our File Maker work is done by a 3rd party interstate all I do is follow there instructions for installing their FM apps. Anyway, here's the problem. We have replaced our Windows 2000 Terminal Server with a new 2003 Terminal Server. Users can connect to the FM app running on/under File Maker Server (on a different server to the Terinal Server, called Appsserver) but the resources used on the 2003 server is 3 times that used on the 2000 server. I'm a psychologist and have used FMP to do my billing (on HCFA 1500 paper) for years. I had my database customized recently so I can bill electronically. The script works fine in FMP 6 but I want to upgrade to FMP 8. The script doesn't work in FMP 8. I get a dialogue box that says "Billing_Output.txt could not be created on this disk. Use a different name, make more room on the disk, unlock it or use a different disk." I have looked at both scripts using Scriptmaker and don't see any obvious discrepancies. Any ideas? Thanks!

I have used Access a little but am on a Mac now. I imported my data from excel, saved thfile and want to perform some simple consolidation of data (i.e. i have line item by day but i want to sum it by month and add a column for the # of occurrences). Has anyone had this problem? Sometimes when I quit Filemaker it takes a couple of minutes for it to completely quit, even when all files are closed.

Hi, I've many field by records, but only 3-4 of them are real data inputed by the user, the other field are here for GUI display etc. Those non user filed must be updated with replace steps cripts, imports etc. I've set a modifcation date auto enter filed, but unfortunately it gets updated during maintenance script execution, thus erasing the real user modification date. I need to track user modification of those few user field only, and the creation of the record by user. Hi For sometime now, and only in Filemaker, my printer is unable to print the numbers 2, 3, 4 and sometimes 5. Instead I just get a square. This only happens intermittently. For instance it might print the number 22 and only the second 2 comes out as a square. Has anyone heard of anything like this? I print using an Epson Acu Laser C1100n This problem does not happen with any other application and I have tried several different Fonts in Filemaker. Very annoying. I'm building a template file with things I want for all or many new files, like scripts, a few layouts, etc. It will undergo periodic modification over time. While this file goes through many revisions, it has very little data in it. Aside from the usual conventions for reducing the chance of corruption of a file, I'm looking for any recommendations for helping to reduce the chances of such a starter template file getting corrupted and the corruption being carried forward to solutions based on it. Should a new file be periodically built and the parts of the existing template be imported or recreated? Or is it mainly indexes and data that are of concern? Thanks. Ken

I have a "Notes" field in my file that works just fine for some records, but for others it will not let me type anything in. I have a file that is *not* shared nor served..it has only been run locally. I can not open it nor can I Recover it.. When I try, I am told that the file is in use... but it's not. ANY ideas would be greatly appreciated. The file is NOT locked and the permissions are read/write.

I have just downloaded 8.5 to play with web views ... plugged my laptop into my new 20 inch cinema display .... tried dragging a fresh new template from my laptop to my cinema display to find that it bounced right back to the laptop.... All previous versions allows this. So must be a bug. This is a nightmare for my clients who work on laptops and cinema as well as me as i bought the thing recently to have more desktop space to develop my FileMaker Solutions... Anyone else had this!!! Hello all, When I go to insurors off the main menu it gives me the screen that you see in the insurorsfm.jpeg attached. I know the data is there because it shows up for other peoples computers. Also if I go to Leases and look under Insurance info it gives me that drop down list and all the insurance companies are there. As you can see in insurorsfm.jpeg the other tabs are blank. But they actually do go where they are supposed to. As you can see in bankfm.jpeg everything fills in when I click on the banks tab. Its pretty weird stuff. Anyone seen this before? I really hope so. I have a database with about 400,000 records in it. I recently went to change a particular field in the database affecting about 120,000 records by using the "replace" function. Basically, changing the name in a field from "Jason" to "Matt". It processed all but about 400 records and generated an error message indicating such. I then performed a find function for "Jason" records which found the 400 records that appeared to be completely empty. These records were, however, uneditable. Hi there I'm having trouble after migrating to FM8 from FM5 where i can't seem to be able to tell it to close certain files that are open in the background once they were opened once. Example is when I go to a particular layout in database X that calls on another database to open say database Y, and even if i go out of that layout in db X to another one that doesn't require db Y, I still can't get FM to close db Y. There are no other files open that I can see that require db Y but I can't get it to close it!! what can i do? am i missing something??

I have a products file that was built in FMP 6.0 and I could really use your help and recommendations before adding it to a new solution Iâ��m building in FMP 8. I work in the convention industry and handle a great deal of speakers, depending on the show, and use a Filemaker template I made up to handle the check in process. I was wondering if the new version of FM could create a folder with the speaker's vitals ( Name, date of talk, room number )when they were processed in my check in procedure? Ex. J Smith is checked in and automatically a folder is created that has Time, Name, Day and Room of his talk. I've never actually used the Calculation part of field validation, but here's what I'm wanting to do. I have a tasks table, inside that table I have a Date Field, a Start Time Field, and an End Time Field. No records start time and end time can overlap another records. And I need a way to check for that. Sure, I could use a script to do this, searching by date and then checking the times recrod by record. But then I got to thinking about List and GetNthRecord functions and wondered if this might be possible in a calculation. Just wondering what a few of the more experienced users think here.

I am having a very strange problem with one computer and was hoping to get some ideas or advice before I resort to reformatting the hard drive. I am running Windows XP, and Filemaker 8.5 Advanced. When I start Filemaker, it takes 4-7 minutes before I see the splash screen and the File Open dialog. If I immediately quit Filemaker, it will restart in about 3 seconds. I have listed below things that I have checked and done to resolve this issue but in the end, I cannot get the first startup to occur in less than 4 minutes. Any ideas? Hello, all-- I'm about to rebuild our relational databases in FMP 8.5, finally upgrading from FMP6 (and FM Server 5.5). For those of you who have done this already, can I expect to see an improvement in performance over the WAN? Even over T1, my remote users in Chicago are telling me how extremely S - L - O - W our FMP6 databases are to work with. Slow to launch, slow to search (especially data in portals), slow to scroll/redraw, etc. I'm also wondering if performance might improve if I move FM Server out from behind NAT and put it in the DMZ instead. Any comments/suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks much.

Just wondering what those with larger customer base (100+) do in regards to VLA Maintenance? Here's my thinking based on a recent renewal quote: The pricing works like this: pay 50% for renewal every year or 100% each time we decide to upgrade. So yearly maintenenace renewal is only cheaper when you plan on upgrading every year. If you upgrade every other year it’s a break even situation but you have the benefit of spreading the payments. Anything over 3 years then is a waste of money. It took my company 5 years to move from 5.5 to 8.5 although I was only hired in the last year and a half. Scenario: FMPA8.5, started in 8 Files UI, DataA, DataB UI display a record from a table in DataA with tabs. DataA has the usual plethora of tables for a project tracking system. DataB, with two tables, each with a handful of fields, is only for container attachments to two tables in DataA. In the UI file, on a button on a tab from a record in DataA, I just made a script to attach a file by going to the Files tab where a portal to DataB lies, with add record via portal ON. As usual the MS site is about as much to the point about what exactly its product is/does as George Bush is about Miltary Actions (sorry bad comparision). I'm having a problem here. When I use this script I get nothing, even when I put it on a button. So my button looks like this: Show Custom Dialog[Get(ActiveLayoutObjectName)] Filemaker says it should return the name of my button, anyone know whats up with this?

I love FMP, as much as I hate it. And since I love it a lot, God knows I hate it ! -) My hater, my huge time wasting, is mainly due to ergonomic stuff that should have been from day 1, but that we still suffer 15 years after. I have noticed that, when cutting and pasting into a field, that the formatting information is copied from the source of the cut instead of from the definition of the field. I find this quite annoying as it makes my database look more and more irregular over time. I have two questions: 1) Is there a way to force the use of the field definition when cutting and pasting into a field? 2) How can I reset the formatting information to that of the field definition after it has been changed by cutting and pasting? I'd like to build a simple flat-file database of about 200 records (flat-file), each record containing about 25 fields and a couple of photographs. Then I'd like to build web pages from this data. I installed FM 8.5 and FM 8.5 advance on some of our systems. Some major features are missing. I can't convert a FM 6 DB. After borrowing someone's system and got the DB converted, I'm able to do the basic fuctions with the DB, but not able to do "save copy as..". The error msg says: This command cannot be used by this installation of FileMaker. It seems like the SW I got only allow to do simple browse/edit features. I called the sales dept of FileMaker, I was told the SW I purchased should be allowed for full feature. I don't even have an access code for one technical support.
