I trying to create a statement to email out to my customer every month. and what i have on my layout [part setup] are: Header, Body, Trailing Grand Summary and Footer. The problem I'm having trouble with is in my Trailing Grand Summary i have 1 field for "Statement Total". If my customer has 10 outstanding invoices past due the invoices all shows but my total is always on page 2. i still have a lot of room to have all the outstanding invoices and statement to show on 1 page. Does any body also have a code for "over 30 days, 60 days, 90 days, etc ." Also because my date is located in the Header section i can't change the edit the date of the statement...any suggestio…

So I'm trying to do this thing that's very similar to hi-lighting rows in a portal. Basically I'm trying to make a calculated field that looks like this If ( SubCategory ≠ "Main" ; Whitebox ; "" ) where Whitebox is a graphic of a white box and the result of the calculation is a container. I'm trying to put this field on top of another field so that if SubCategory is "Main" the bottom field shows, otherwise it's covered by a white box. I have documents to fax and need to have a face sheet with "to and from data" along with lots of legal mumbo-jumbo. Each following page needs to have the office address at the top and senders name at the bottom and of course, data in between I planned on using a Title Header for the face sheet page and Headers and Footers for the data at the top and botton of each page with the Body in between for the records I want to transmit. I created an entry form for data and my wife (who uses Filemaker Pro) for her work decided she wanted to see a spreadsheet rows and columns display for a while. Now we cannot seem to restore the data entry form I set up that has client information all on one page (there are so many fields, one has to scroll right a lot to enter data and to do searches). Only way I can get to that is to go into Form View and I'm expected to edit the entry form in that mode, not do data queries or display records. Hi, I am new to the forum here and I have a quick question. I just installed filemaker onto server 8. Every time I click to form view from list view (or vice-versa) I get a warning saying "Do you wish to save this change with the layout?" I do have "Save record changes automatically" check on - which I though would take care of it. Anyone have a suggestion? Thanks!

Over time I have made frequent use of the FMP labels wizard to create labels layouts using Avery A4 Australian labels. (and yes, the page set up is set to A4) Recently I have had the problem of some labels not printing, even though the layout looks fine in preview mode. I have been able to resolve the issue on a couple of occasions by creating a new layout. I have no idea why this solves the problem because I haven’t done anything different. I have clients and projects. I have a layout that looks good, and about a million scripts to display each combination of clients and projects. I need to display certain values from a table in a custom order "but" I also only want to display records in that custom order that are related to values in another table. Is it possible to create buttons that are functional in preview mode? I've been searching this forum but can't seem to find an answer. The reason I want to use preview mode is for the sub-summaries and sliding objects/shrinking fields. These don't work in browse mode, so I need to preview. However, I can't seem to enable any buttons/scripts while in preview mode (such as a button in a portal row to display the contents of the related record). How do others handle this type of scenario? When an edit box field has more text that can be viewed within it's boundaries, if you click on the field, the information expands to show all of the text. However, when you do this, the contents of the field are also editable. I am concerned that my users might accidentally delete or alter the information--perhaps even without realizing that they did. Is there some way to make all of the text visible while still keeping the field protected? I don't want to just make it read only because the users should have access to create and edit this information. I simply want to only allow editing from a custom "edit" layout to avoid mistakes. Has anybody else encountered a problem where a drop down list appears as wide as my screen? I have checked every thing I can think of and I can't seem to solve this problem. The field is in a portal that I use to connect a parts inventory to a product. The idea is to click on the vendor part number field in the portal, have it display a part name, then automatically fill out the name of the manufacturer, part description, price, etc. When I click on the field it works as expected, but the drop down list doesn't appear like it does in the invoices database where I've done the same thing. I'm perplexed. (see attached image) This just started happening today. Regardless of the justification setting, it is splitting words when wrapping text. In the last few days I have been creating a run time version. It makes me wonder if some changed global settings in Filemaker or Windows is behind this.

Quick question, Has anyone ever used a timer for dialog boxes? I have a system that allows the user a second chance to print a receipt, but a lot of the time the user doesn't reply to the dialog. I want to set a time to how long the dialog box can be displayed. I know I can do this through a layout with start/finish times, but just wondered if there are other avenues like a timer.

I have a layout that has a field that they enter Y or N in. I want to duplicate this layout and when they select the layout (from the layout selector on the left) it will only display records that have a Y in the field. I've searched the forums, but have not yet found a resolution to my "text-wrapping" problem... : The file options DO have "roman" line-breaking checked, yet the "wrapping" continues; displaying text in an off-kilter alignment. Fields that do not have enough text wrap to a second line appear with the correct horizonal alignment. This is a new FM8 solution for Windows XP displaying data that was provided to me in a *.xls format, which I opened FM8A and then imported into the new solution. My apologies if I've missed a previous post resolving this issue.

I am new to FMP coming from a Microsoft Access background. In an Access report you can create a "layout" with a text field that has a property setting of "can grow". This allows the vertical size of the text to grow to account for the fact that in one record you may have 25 characters and in another you may have 200. The only thing I can find that is similar in FMP is the "sliding" feature - although it appears the sliding feature has a significant limitation in that you must initial set the size of the field to hold the largest amount of text entered and it will then shrink as necessary. hello, I am transitioning over from MSAccess to FMP8.5 Advanced and am trying to understand what is the structure of FMP development. Lets assume the msaccess steps are: 1)create an ERD 2)build tables 3)create queries based on tables 4)display queries or tables in a form. How do i do step 3(create queries- involving several tables) and 4(display layouts from many tables) in Filemaker? How does one tightly control a cascading entry across say 5 tables (via serially connected tables [not 5 tables connected in parallel-this i can do.]). I dont really know anything about filemaker, so I was wondering if someone could give me some information. I have this 3rd party app and I need to add a button that will open the save as .pdf dialog. I have a Tab Control object into my layout. One tab is Credit Card and the other is PayPal. Of course, credit card details show up in the CC tab and PayPal details show up in the PayPal tab, however, people only pay with 1 method. So what I'd like to do is be able to have the CC tab up front on records where payment type is CC, and PayPal tab come up front on records where PayPal was used. Possible? I have a set of records that I would like to group by date. For instance all records with a particular date grouped and counted. So the final report will reflect how many records in Jan, Feb, Mar etc. How does one begin to accomplish this?

My application involves a moderately complex layout with over 150 different fields on nested tab panels. For months now, I've fought flaky tab settings. Going into and out of Set Tab Order (e.g., to add a new field) causes FileMaker to very often drop the first tab I had defined, which wreaks havoc on runtime operation, of course. Many times, I've had to clear all tabs and reset all my sequences -- and even then I have to watch FileMaker like a hawk to see that each tab is being retained. I have a solution that requires 15) 8.5 x 11 pages for each record. So far, all I seem to be able to create is 10 -- FM will not allow me to "pull down" or resize the layouts any larger. I could create a secondary layout for pages 11-15 but envision other issues when trying to create a single pdf and/or the bothersome solution of two print dialog boxes (one for each layout) when printing. Is there a preference or way to allow a single layout to have 15 pages rather than the 10 I am apparently being limited by? Thanks

Hi I have a value list which gets the "values" from a relationship. When I am in Browse Mode, the popupmenu shows correctly but when I am in FIND Mode, it displays . Any suggestions ? I am using FMP 8.0 Thanx

Many times I add a Go to Related Record behavior to a field in a layout so I can just click on that field to view the related record. When I go into Find Mode, though, this field remains a "button" although it doesn't do anything at all in Find Mode. I can't enter any data into this field to Find on, though, because it switches the cursor like a button and when I click it tries to activate the related record...which of course there isn't one and nothing happens. How can I disable this in Find Mode so that I can still search on this field, yet be able to use it to view related records in Edit mode? Any info would be great. thanks!

I have a layout that diplays records in a list. The "small" black bar to the left of the record is the only thing that tells me that it is the current record. I'd like to, via a calculation, be able to change the color or bold the text of fields on the layout for the current record to make it a lot more obvious which is the current record. Can anyone help me with this?

I've got a FM system consisting of multiple FM files and many different layouts. I like to maximize open windows inside of FM application, but many of the layouts/windows that I work with cause my window to fit to the size of that layout or something and I have to re-maximize all the time. It's very aggravating. Is there a way I can make my opened windows inside FM stay maximized at all times..: Any information would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

I need a layout for printing that displays the bands and songs from the current record (episode) and next record (next episode) only. I have a task-list printout using Sub-Summaries by Status. Each occurrence of the sub-summary part starts on a new page. For instance, first I'll have the Status: Complete sub-summary, followed by its records, then a new page, then the Status: Waiting sub-summary, followed by its records. The only thing checked in the Sub-Summary dialog is "allow part to break across page boundaries." The layout setup is specified as View: List only. It's been a while since I've used printouts with sub-summaries (i.e. FM6). Is this just how it is or am I missing something? Thanks for any suggestions.

I have a "notes" field using an edit box that the user can scroll up and down for adding text on a record. I want to have a button that when clicked it will insert the current date in red and bold at the point the pointer is in the notes field and have the text the user enters in black. I can make a button and get it to insert the date but I cant work out how to have it do it in a different colour. I would also like it to add a space after the date so the user can click the button and just type the note, It would be very cool if the button could also make the pointer got to the top of the notes field insert the date and then the user can type so they dont n…

OK - I have finally figured out how to assign different colors to a value (e.g. <60 red, 60 orange, >60 green) using a calculated field and a case statement .... however in my layout, the color gets overwritten by the color used for the field - when i click on the field it changes to the correct color, but when i just look at it - it does not..... how can i tell the layout to use the color assigned to the field??

Is there any way that a click on a button can pass the object name of that button to the script that the button runs? It would be OK if this is done as a script param, or some other way. As long as I don't have to enter the object name again as a hard-coded script param. Thanks! M.

Further to my questions, I am creating a Trivia Database with question and answers. I want to run a report, where I can go into my database and show me a random list of 50 records. (ie. Question & Answers) (each record contains a question and answer) and print them out. For some reason I am having a tab order problem on my layout. Scenario: I added a field to the layout and it automatically put in a tab #. I had complaints from staff as this was a field out of the normal view for admin use only. I deleted the tab # and then reorganized the order. This messed up the way it was ordered. I've looked at a backup copy and reset up the tab order the way it was but it still isn't working like it was. I have tabs 1-4 in fields from the current table on the layout. The next tabs are in the portal. The backup copy skips 5 and then goes to 6 7 8 9 skips 10 then 11 and 12. When I set the same numbers when I click ok it changes them to be…

I have a list of invoices with a product; the quantity sold; the price of product; the royalty rate as a percentage and a calculation field that calculates the royalty rate times the price to give the royalty payment. It works fine. I have them sorted by product. I have a sub-summary with price summary and a royalty payment summary that shows what the total of the price paid is and the total of the royalty payments owed. It shows up in the preview mode of my report just fine. What I would like is to see only a list of the sub-summaries without seeing the individual invoices. I'm trying to omitt records that I use for tracking my jobs. Once a job is complete I would like to Omitt it from the report. I wrote a script that omits the jobs that are complete and it works. Each job has multiple records under each job title and it gets rid of them all. Woot! My problem is the jobs that are not complete it omits some of the records in them as well. It still lists the job as not complete, but some of the related records are gone. There is nothing in the fields that I told it to compare with to find out if the job is complete, but it still omits them. Has this happened to anyone else?

ok so i'm using the contact management to keep track of clients in our non profit agency. we have clients come in multiple times a month, for these clients, every time they come in, data is inputed in the notes section regarding the purpose of their visit. the problem is that every time these clients come, we have to input the data in the same "notes" section and if we ever need to print out info for a certain visit, the program will print out the filemaker page with ALL of the notes in the notes section what i want to do, is perhaps format a new entire page or tab for notes only, where i can create multiple fields and separate the notes by month, maybe even have like…

Hello all! I have an issue that has perplexed me for years, and now it's time to see if I can't get it worked out. The problem is unwanted blank space in line 2 of my (auto-generated) Avery 5160 label layout when there is no person #2 in that <<>> field. For instance - the lauout looks like this: <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> When "<>" and "<>" do not have any values in them, there is a blank line there. How do I get rid of that blank line? I created a database to manage the Advanced Placement (AP) program at my high school. I am trying to create a layout that displays the total number of test takers and the total number of tests administered (some students are taking multiple tests). I used a field with check boxes to indicate which of up to 10 tests each student is signed up for. How do I define a field for my summary layout which allows me to display the total number of tests to be administered ( I already figured out how to display the total number of test takers)

Sorry if this is a simple question, but I haven't found the answer! I have a Header that has a small object, about an inch in height. I am trying to expand the Header, but it won't move. It won't budge. How can I "unfreeze" the Header? Alison

...the bars on the bottom and right of the window? The left side of the window, sans status area, is neat and flush. But the bottom has the zoom and view buttons and a whole bar across the bottom. The right side is there for the scrollbar, of course, but I don't need it. I can't find any view option that lets me eliminate those. Any ideas? J

I am crating a database to compute student scores for a contest. I have most of it done, but cannot find a way to easily/ automatically calculate their rank. For instances the highest score is 1, next highest 2, etc. Any help would be great.

I created a FM database which basically is a timesheet tracking database. However, the output reports are based on 3 seperate forms. These forms were imported from MS Word documents. I created a layout for each form. I need to be able to print each form individually and I need to be able to print all 3 forms as a 3 page document. I made a 4th form that I created by copying and pasting each form in to this form. The problem I have is maintenance. To edit form 1, I have to edit both Layout 1 and Layout 4. Okay, I am very new to working with FileMaker but I need some help as I have been charged with creating a database in 4 days. Argh! In my database, I am managing incoming students into a summer school session with a number of different classes. Each student gets three choices of what they would like. I set up a value list with the class choices and used the same value list for my firstchoice, secondchoice, and thirdchoice fields. We have a database of donors. We need to send them letters of various sorts and want to use an electronic signature so we don't have to sign every letter. We have various letters, each in its own layout. Each layout has merge fields, text (the body of the letter), and a place for the signature. I have succeeded in inserting the signature onto the layout but because each letter in a given found set has a different number of lines of merged data, etc, the signature is sometimes in the correct place, sometimes too high, sometimes too low. Hi I have created 12 records in my database but when I am in browse mode I cannot see them. I can find them in find mode on the left it says there are 12 records, just can't see them. Any help appreciated. Trevor

While the user manual is a little thin on this subject, other info says that I can set a tab order to include a button on the layout. I have followd the instructions, selected "objects" and numbered the fields so the next tab numbered after the last field is a button. Problem is , it won't go to the button, it just skips back to the first field in an endless loop. I tried removing all tabs and starting over rather than renumbering and deleting existing tabs but it doesn't make any difference so I am stumped. Anyone have this problem besides me.

Does anyone know if there is any way that you can tab to a button and use the "Enter" key to activate the button. Just like when you log in here....you enter your user name and password then you can tab to the "login" button and hit "Enter"

Hi, I wrote an AP Application that did not address read-only access - I now need to allow a user the ability to search certain tables for a given record (an invoice or check record) and if found allow them to look at it and print it (an option);I currently have a different sub-system that is handling these read only requests - once the user enters the find key and the find is valid the script goes into "PREVIEW MODE" and calls a new layout - with in this layout I have two buttons - one calling a script to return to the previous screen and one to print it. The popup menus that I created on a Mac, and now host on Server 8 (also on a Mac), behave strangely on a Windows 8.5 client. When I click on a popup menu and select an item, the whole field disappears. Works fine if on a Mac FM 8.5 client. Any suggestions? I've tried resizing the field box to no avail. Thanks, Jason

My apologies if this has already been asked, but I couldn't find it anywhere in my documentation or on the forum. Is there a way to format a regular field (a pop-up menu, FYI) as a rounded square? I have it on a layout with a bunch of other buttons and I want it to look uniform. Alternately, is there a way to format a button as a drop down list? I'm working on a computer inventory database for the school I work at. Part of this inventory records the hardware addresses (MAC addresses) for each computer. I also receive the blocked page notifications from our firewall and I try to monitor their screen in Remote Desktop. However, the firewall likes to send the notifications with the hardware addresses formatted like this 00.03.93.xx.xx.xx, while our inventory (like everyone else's in the world) has them formatted like 00:03:93:xx:xx:xx. Is there a way to have a script reformat the hardware address from the version with the periods to the version with colons? It would make the lookup process a little quicker with…

I've searched everywhere... I've just upgraded from v6 to v8.5, and have combined 4 DBs into one with 4 tables. Can I import the layouts (on which I have spent many hours) as well as the data?

As shown on my attachment, I use the 'Sub Summary'(probably incorrectly) to contain the field 'Room' so that each renovation task for a particular room, is listed in that room...to be followed by the next room and its tasks. Using 8.5 I'm trying to create a simple invoice layout using a database with only x2 tables: Order Placed & Order Item(as supplied by a 3rd party)related by Order ID. I've created the layout to show from the Order Item table and set it up with Title Header, Header, Body, Footer & Title Footer and included sample text in all layout parts to test the results. But when viewing the results in Preview Mode I don't get anything showing in both the Header & Footer. Can anyone advise?

Hi - I don't know if you can do this. I am building a database, and i have created 3 layouts within it. When we use it at work, we will need to save both 'order' layout and the 'delivery note' layout as one pdf (with each layout a separate page on the same pdf). i can't find a way to do this.. I assume i can do it in scriptmaker? Any help greatly appreciated -) Rach.

I am new to these forums and I have a problem. I have created a database where i have the name of a company and a relationship to partners in a portal. Each partner has a different role, example 1 or 2 may be Grantor, 1 or 2+ may be Trustee / Co-Trustee and 1 or 2+ may be Beneficiary. So what I need to do is be able to print lets say the Grantor in one part of the letter, the Trustee in a different part of that letter, and the Beneficiaries in another part of the same letter. I have been searching the web for about a week on how to do something like this and have been unsuccessfull. Please any help will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I am trying to have Customers names be automaticly entered when I go from the customer info layout, to lets say, a Customer Change order layout. I would like to enter the information in the Customer Info. field, and then when I go to the next layout, the Customer name field is automaticly filled in with what I put in the Customer Info field. If I make the Customer name field global, in the Customer Info layout it seems to work, but when I select a new record, the old info is still displayed.......any ideas.............

One of my files (and various derivative copies of it) are intermittently not showing up in the Window manu. I'm well aware that hidden files are behind the "Show Window>" menu item, and these aren't there either. Anyone else seen this? A sign of corruption, possibly? (God, I hope not.) Or is there some non-bug non-corruption reason this would happen? It occurs no matter whether the window in question or another window has the focus. If I spawn a new window from one of the files with the problem, the new window inherits the disease. This doesn't happen all the time. When I first open these files they show in the menu as normal. I have a table 'a' containing a 'total' field summaryzing several related records. Sometimes I need the sum of the 'total' fields from a long quantity of records from the 'a' table. I save this into a 's.total' calculation field using the GetSummary function. When in browse mode I go into the layout containing 's.total' it takes a long time to get the calculation. I just need to have the calculation sometimes, so in order to accelerate it I would like to script a button that shows or hides the field containing 's.total' into one layout. I know I could use two identical layouts (except 's.total') and switch from one to another, but I would prefer some…

Hi Everyone, I have strruggled with this for years but now I am trying to take my FileMaker Skills to a different layer and I have to avoid being embarssed and just ask the question! Is there as technique that I can use to produce what I can only call multi-page documents that are created dynamically? My example is this....I also use QuickBooks at work. In QuickBooks when I am filling out an invoice that invoice can be as many lines as I want it to be and I will just get XX number of pages to the invoice when I go to print it. I hope I can make this make sense... I want to track all the different expenses related to the improvement of a product. Specifically I want to track all of the repairs done on a product among the many other types of expenses. I have one layout with the product info and calculations. I want to put another layout on top of that with just the entry for a single repair. I would like to be able to have several records of repairs linked to only one record for the product. I have a form I am creating, so space counts. I have portal linked to equipment serial numbers, and it works fine, but there is not enough room to display it vertically. I would like to be able to use something similar to bieng able to print in more then one column, but on only part of the lay out. Is this possible?

I've created a form letter in FM pro advanced 8, all the content is as I'd like it with merge fields, text and logos, but when I go to print a sample letter, the margins are all wrong for a business letter. I'm confused. I have two related databases, one that holds information (demographics) and another that most displays the data through multiple portals. I want the users to be able to scroll the portal and the larger text field within (student_information). The issue I've run into is that on some layouts users are allowed to edit the student_information field - no problem with the scroll bar working fine. The issue is I need to lock entry of that field on some layouts, but still allow scrolling. If I sent the behavior to enter only in edit mode the scroll is gone. Ok, I have a Indexed Text field that I want to keep the user from modifying. So I went to field behavior and unchecked allow entry in browse mode. But I want the user to be able to copy the contents of the field, so I created a copy button specifying that field. But copy button wont work if it cant go to that field. Tried several work arounds like creating an unstored calc field that would hide behind the copy button..lol But, not a real answer to the problem. Also, there is no validation on this particular field, and only want to lock this one field down, not the entire record or layout.

I have two databases - a mailing database (contains the number of pieces in a mailing) and a donations database (contains the number of donations received from each mailing). I want to be able to calculate my response rate from each mailing. In the donations database, I track each donation in a field called "Amount". Hi All, Newbie Question: I have three tables, that are not related. I have created layouts for each. Two of the tables work fine, the third one when I'm in browse mode and select "Record / New Record" I can enter the first record, but when I add the second record it allows me to enter the data but there is still only one field. It does not create a new field, any idea what I have forgot to do? Also when in Layout mode with this third Layout, the "Layout Part Labels" Header, Body and Footer are arranged Horizontally and not vertical. Is there a way to flip the Labels vertically? I have a problem with FileMaker 8.5 in label layout mode. The preset labels for Avery, Dymo labels etc are not installed. How can I get them installed? The installation disk does not seem to have seperate folders for labels which I could use for a copy and paste operation into the programme folder.

Hi All, I came across this problem last week. Under the FORMAT Menu, there is a USE System Format right at the bottom of the menu. On some other installations, e.g. Win XP Home & XP Pro, some of them have that option and some don't, thus the user cannot switch the System Format on/off. All the users using the FM trial version. Is this a FM bug or Microsoft bug, or am I missing something here? On my Mac OS X version, everything is there! What gives? Help, somebody?

We have Filemaker 8 Pro Advanced in my office so I thought I'd try something easy just to get the feel of the program and now I'm truly confused : I want to create a database with two tables for tracking my Legato backups and Recoveries. I am trying to print files in A4. However everytime I open any record it defaults back to Letter size paper. When I print it prints on 2 pages. If I manually change the paper size to A4 every time in Print setup it will print properly. How can I remove the letter size and change the default paper size to A4 (8.5 x 11) I have been trying to solve this problem for over 6 months now. Driving me mad!

Hi, I have a customer order data base. I have a layout for printing labels showing customer info and product info. I need to print a label for each product ordered by a customer. For example: If they ordered 6 apples and 2 oranges, I need to print 6 apple labels and 2 orange labels with the customer name on and product info on them. What steps do I need to take in order to do this? I am able to print one label for each type of product for a customer, but can't work out how to get multiples to print according to their order quantity. Thank you in advance.
