The runtime still won't connect to anything! You've got Adobe coming out with the AIR runtime, MS is working on theirs, and then you have FM who has had the ability for years and could have put a serious thumping on the above two but won't because they want to try to make everyone pay $300!! Really upsets me because FMP is such a nice program and easy to use but it's like getting all dressed up with no place to go! I know that this isn't as glamorous as ESS, but the expansion of the Arrange Toolbar to include the "Resize to Smallest Width," etc will save me countless trips to the side-kick menu. Sometimes it's the small things. (Yes, I want Layout management folders, like Scripts).

Hi! I recently started to work with filemaker and so far I'm really impressed. But a problem that i can't really solve showed up. I followed the guide at http://fmcollective.com/?p=43 which describes how to insert only the map part of google maps (not the whole webpage) in filemaker using web viewer. I create the 2 php files i needed, put them on my webpage and then directed the custom webadress feature to this location. But now to the problem. It's probably not a reasonable question. But it would be too cool if a layout could grow to fill the browser window. I currently open IWP in a carefully sized browser window so user's don't have to scroll to see the whole layout on lower resolution computers. It would be nice if those with higher resolution systems could benefit from increasing the size of the window.

Just wondering whether you have every come across the following: FileMaker (on Windows) opens but most of the graphics do not display and access to the fields doesn't seem to show any movement. However, if you un-maximise the screen and drag the corners about, it displays perfectly, until you move to another layout. Any ideas???

I noticed that some fonts I imported to my PC do not show up in Filemaker 9, I had no problem with them in version 6 or in other applications. I also noticed that fields containing the symbol font will not show up when you save as a pdf.

Hello all, I have a person who is using there laptop as well as a 15 inch dell monitor in extended display mode. There is a bit of an issue with it though. When the computer is in extended display mode filemaker pro looks different. When not using extended display mode when working on a expense report or a time card. If I move my mouse over a column and click on that column a black outline of that same column shows and it then shows a vertical line blinking indicating that I can start typing in that column. Once I start typing I am able to see the entries as they are typed. But for some reason when extended display is enabled it is different. There is no more …

Does anyone know what the policy will be with regards to activation if you're developing on more than one computer/platform? I have a 10-seat license VLA for FMP, but just one license for FMPA. In the past, I could install FMPA on both a mac and a pc for runtime creation, debugging, etc, and as long as both copies weren't accessing the same server at the same time, then everything was OK. But now since each copy will have to be activated, there will be some sort of limit on that. I'm hoping the limit will be 2 machines like it is for Adobe products, otherwise it will be a PITA or I'll need to add another license of FMPA just to do cross-platform testing. …

I must say I was reallly looking forward to this feature, but I overlooked one thing--- that you have to install and configure the ODBC driver on every single machine that is going to access the data source. I guess I was hoping this would be handled by the server OR perhaps by the FileMaker 9 client without a need for tinkering with the ODBC driver. I've already accessed data sources using version 8... and it's just such a pain to have to configure the drivers on the client machines.. Hi. Today I'm using Lotus Notes (with a "database" designed with lotus domino). The database consist of 2 list. 1 containing different gasstations in sweden (with some info regarding them, adresses etc) and 1 containing different entreprenurs I use to repair/build etc different stuff on the gasstations. I then open up a now job and connect that job with an entreprenur and a gasstationen. That is the basic stuff of my applikation. But now to the question. Hi all, just got the trail version of FileMaker Server9 and installed it - all went fine and everything was good. After a while I did a restart and since then I cannot get the dataserver to start. I´m not so much into it that I can solve the problem and thinking about formatting the whole computer to start from scratch... any ideas? I just upgraded from 8 to 8.5 advanced and I have bumped into this issue. I have created a record that I can find (when serching for it specfically) but if I select show all records - it is not in the list. I can then serch for it specifically and find it... the total recod count does not include it either. If I close and open the file it hen appears like all the other recordss. Please help.

Hello All, I am using FileMaker Pro 8 to handle my 10+gig sales database. On my most recent data load, the database stop loading the data right before it was about to finish. It froze with 120k left to load. Does filemaker have a maximum file size before it starts to become unstable? Thanks so much for the help!

On one machine in our office if anyone but the Admin logs into one of our FM databases sitting on our FM server the FileMaker app will crash and shut down. If the Admin logs in to FM using that machine FM remains stable and performs as it should. I have tried removing the FileMaker app and reinstalling it but that doesn't fix the issue. I have even removed the users' account and re-entered it but that doesn't work either. Still crashes. One additional oddity....if the user attempts to access one database in particular she can log in and everything is normal. However, on all other databases FM fails and crashes. Exact Error Message: "The translator for this file format could not be found or could not be initialized." This error message occured when I tried to drag an image via Picasa to the container in my layout. It did work fine when I was using Filemaker Pro 8.5 however, I just deleted that installation and installed Filemaker Pro 8.5 Advanced and the layout doesn't work in the Advanced version. I have just founded my company, and am looking for info regarding FM 8.5, hope to find it here. I have read the Missing Manual, and am looking for deeper answers. We would like to update the database on 2 Mac Books Pro, from the Ecommerce website, so we can build a DB to manage all our customers, produce invoices, control reports and so on.. We are installing 50 client versions of Filemaker 8.5. We have changed the personalization file to prevent users creating databases as any solution will be hosted by Filemaker Server. We do not want the users opening any databases locally either. So I thought we should remove the English Extras folder which contain the tutorial and sample files. Is there anything else I should (or should not remove) when installing Client versions?

This is a particularly annoying problem and I wondered if anyone else has encountered this. I recently started to notice that the screen refreshes were becoming increasingly erratic and somewhat more 'violent' in their intensity. Knowing how the guts of how Filemaker works I am aware that there are a number of factors involved in the screen refresh process involving the grahics card, Quicktime, the operating system etc., so accordingly I ran a debug and am still getting nowhere with this. I would like to have a icon on users' desktops for opening a Remotely-hosted filemaker database without having to choose "Open Remote" and go through the process of finding/chosing the host and the filename. Are there any command line switches for the filemaker exe file that will allow me to specify the remote file to open such that the user will be able to bypass the above steps? I can't seem to find any information on this anywhere.

Greetings.... I have been running FM v8 (upgrade from v7) for some time without a hitch. Yesterday, I accidently cut the power while FM was open. From that point on, I can't get it to load. It will attempt, up displaying the FM v8 intro panel, but will then shut down. I have verified & repaired permissions, with no luck. I removed FM v8 using AppDelete utility, and reinstalled it. No Luck. I removed FM v7 and FM v8 and reinstalled both. FM v7 seems to work fine, but not v8. Does anyone have any tips/suggestions on what I am doing wrong. Thanks for your help

I've been using Filemaker Pro 7 on my eMac (using OS 10.3.9) for about 3 years, and have used it as recently as a few days ago. Today when I wanted to update a data base, I clicked on the file, and Filemaker acted as though it was going to start. The first screen showing my name and the copyright data came up. But that's as far as it got. It closed almost immediately. Same thing happens when I click on the application icon to start it. I tried to reinstall the program, and I got a message saying that my key was invalid (even though I know it isn't). If anyone has any ideas, I'll be eager to hear them. Thanks.

I wonder if anyone have an idea on how to add more dictionaries for spelling, in my case I need Norwegian spelling and it is not supported as standard. There are several open source dictionaries available, so maybe a way could be found to compile one into Filemaker's format. Cheers, Andreas

A few months ago, my keyboard modifiers suddenly and completely stopped working in both FileMaker Pro and Pro Advanced. For example, I can no longer hold the key while click/dragging a field to duplicate the field. I must use the Duplicate feature from the menubar to copy of field. I thought I would test this issue and see if FileMaker is detecting the modifier keys. I created a Test database with a button that shows a custom dialog with the result of "Get ( ActiveModifierKeys )" when the button is pressed. With every combination, the result is always 0. I purchased FMP 8 Advanced a while back for my Mac. At the time I used the Mac's Disk Utility to create a disk image file from the Filemaker Installation disk. Recently I needed to install onto Windows, and I realized I'd lost the original disk. So I created one from the disk image file. The CD mounts correctly in Windows, and shows the expected icons, and begins the installation process, but when it asks for the registration code it tells me it's not valid. I'm using the same code that I used when installing on the Mac, which I think is the only code that came with the product. Received software for FileMaker v. 8.5 today, but can't get it installed on my laptop (Mac iBook G4, OS X v. 10.4). I put the disc in, click on the installer icon, and get an error message reading: "The software to be installed requires a minimum of Mac OS X v.10.3.9 or Mac OS X v.10.4.5." It installed on my G5 desktop machine (running OS X 10.4.9) just fine. I really need it on the laptop, too. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks!

I have FileMaker 8 server that hosts databases using Active Directory for access rights. My clients have been accessing the hosted databases without any issues. We use both Macs and Windows and have never had a problem, until one of my users upgraded to Vista. He has Vista Ultimate installed. The workstation is part of the AD domain and he is logging in to the computer with his AD credentials. When he tries to open a remote file hosted on our server, instead of passing his credentials to the FMPro server and using them, he is prompted for a username and password. I have to be the dumbest guy on earth. I recently had a power surge and all my data disappeared. The data is still there because I can do various find requests and get a record count that should meet the criteria but I cannot see it. The file still shows the size it was before the surge I've tried all kinds of recovery techniques. Recovering under Mac and Windows environments. I've tried to import data into clone. UPDATE: It appears data was input with font information, so the calculated field is using the font info entered with the zip code, and the layout font for the rest. How can one prevent this from happening? --------------- Postnet code font not displaying properly. I am using a calculation to generate the postnet code for mailing. The data is not being formatted properly in the font. A postnet code is made up of the zip code, a correction digit, and a dash or other character at each end, depending on the specific font. I've got a database which I am using for interviewing (hopefully!) tommorrow, but when I compile it on my main machine and try to open the compilation on my laptop (Sony VAIO VGN-S series) I get the error "The Application faile to initialize properly (0xc00000005)." And it will not open. I thought it may be something to do with the two machines, so I installed FM8.5 Advanced straight onto the laptop, which worked fine, but on trying to open it I get the same error. Two clients are reporting crashes with FileMaker Pro 8.5. Both users were in other applications (Internet Explorer and Adobe Acrobat Reader) and when they went back to FileMaker it just disappeared. No error messages were given. I have a solution (which has about 60 different databases link together) that was created with filemaker 6.0 and worked well, however when I moved it to fm7 and try to open one of the main databases I keep getting the following message: "This record can not be modified in this window because it is already being modified in a different window"... I searched the forums but didn't see this discussed so I apologize if its been asked before. I have a layout in FM8 with several fields using 7 point Frutiger Condensed. In browse mode this font displays all jagged and the cursor appears out of place typing characters before where the insertion point appears on the screen. I can change the font but it seems to happen with all. It also happens on different machines. Both Macs running 10.4 by the way. Bumping the size up to 9 pt fixes the problem but I need to use 7pt for printing. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Periodically have font names end up being blank (i.e. click on layout object, under font it should be something like Arial, but it's just blank). This has happened on different computers, with version 8 and 8.5 advanced ... and with different databases. It seems kinda common to me and for the most part, isn't an issue, but sometimes it affects things dramatically (printing/sliding,etc.) Similar issues? Fixes? We're just using standard fonts like Arial, Times New Roman on a Windows XP(SP2) box.

Each time I open a file I've been working on, it opened without a login window. Then, after having been to the "File Options" window and unchecked "Login using:" now when I open the file it always displays the login window. Any tips how I can fix this?

NO other computer can edit any of the entries in ANY database created on computer "A", even though NO PASSWORD is set up. I'm having a problem with a relationship. I have a layout with some info about hotels and a button that goes to the another layout that shows pictures of that hotel. I made a relationship between them with an ID field, and it work perfectly beside one thing. If I create a new record in the hotel table, it doesn't create a new one in the picture table, even though I selected "Allow creation of records in this table via this relationship". I recently upgraded a client of mine to FM 8.5 from FM 8.0 (Windows Version, Using FM Server8.0v4 as host. After the upgrade I noticed that a 3 of out of my 5 workstations were having the following printing issue. When a print request issued the print dialog box appears and the user selects the printer. Regardless of which printer they choose it will default to the default printer. But this only happens on a few computers, not all of them. Also the computers that are being printed to are networked printers that are attached to workstaions on the network. Has anyone delt with anything like this. I've read a couple of times that FM8 is "faster" than FM7. Have there been any specifics? Does anyone have any real-world experience? I find FM7 vastly faster than FM6 when hosted on FM Server. The ability to have a 200+ MB RAM Cache on the server (vs 40MB on FMS5.5) makes a world of difference. The main complaints I have about FM7's performance are in the areas of Importing and Deleting records. Have these been improved in FM8/FM8Server? (I realize FM8 Server is not out, but perhaps people saw demos or heard from beta testers)

Something strange has begun happening on my Windows XP based laptop when using any FM product (tried 7, 8, 8.5, advanced, etc...) For unknown reasons, whenever I use Filemaker, the screen seems to do an odd refresh/redraw thing where it will hang up for just a second and the data will redraw about an inch to the left of where it actually is on the screen. It will catch itself after half a second and come back but it is driving me crazy while working on databases! Hi everyone, I wasn't sure where to post this so I am posting it here. I have had 8.5 advanced for some time and I just bought a new computer. Now I am having refresh problems and flickering. I am especially bothered by a problem in layout mode. If I use a drop down or even a web viewer and don't choose immediately, the screen flickers and over shadows the drop down until I click on something. I never had this problem with my old computer. Is this a computer setting or a filemaker setting? Can anyone help? Mike

I am working with a team of novice developers to create a new solution for our organization. We have each been working on a couple of files every day, and then backing up to a hard drive at night. Things were going fairly smoothly, until I emailed a file to a coworker who wanted to add some calculations. When she emailed it back to me, the calc she added was nowhere to be found. I asked her about it, and she opened the file on her computer, only to find that the calc was not there either. I purchased 2 copies of FM7 running on 2 computers in 3 computer network. Each runs a separate database which we access using Open Remote function. Running Windows XP. After closing one of the databases and attempting to relaunch FM the following error message occasionally appears: "The single-user license copy of Filemaker Pro cannot launch. Another user is already running a copy of Filemaker Pro with the same license on tis computer." In order to launch FM I have to reboot. Any suggestions?

Is it good housekeeping every once in a while to save a compacted copy (smaller) of all your files and then replace them with the originals? I was under the impression that not only might the files be somewhat smaller in size - but that they were also rebuilt and cleaned up somehow internally - is this true? Also - Does this process help in any way to check/repair corruption?

Ok, I'm stumped and now scared. I just spent all weekend converting my FileMaker database from version 5.5 to version 8.0. I have a database of invoices and it's NEVER had a password ever, even when it was version 5.5. So I'm creating a script in the upgraded version 8 database and testing things out. I am using 8.5 Advanced on an Intel IMac. Closing the program is a bother. If, when I select "Quit FileMaker Pro Advanced" or the Apple Menu "Shut Down" the program takes about 75 or more seconds to do this or just freezez nd I have to invoke the "Force Quit Applications" command. Hello everyone... I am creating a file that is for a survey we are putting out to customers. What I was thinking is to have the questions in one table as fields. So each questions will be a record in the table. And since we are going to set it up for the user depending on what type of customer they are. (I.e. Parent, student, staff) Depending on what type they are they will be asked different questions. I am new to FM, purchased FM 8.5 Advanced for a development project... In the contact section, I am trying to add a pop-up window that will allow you to add an additional 3 names and phone numbers... The problem is that the screen is fairly full, and I wanted to click on a button that that would call-up a window where, as needed, up to an additional 3 POC's can be added. I purchased two large (FM) recommended books, and called FM only to find out my one-year support was used when I called in one-time to register a software license to the project. Not too happy a camper... anyone?

Is there any way to open filemaker 7 developer and another version of filemaker? I have 7, 7 developer, 8, and 8.5 but only one can be opened at a time.

Hi, I've recently upgraded to 8.5 from 6.0. Very often, when I go from one database to the other using 'window' in Filemaker's menu, the database I selected among the available list opens a white page ( i.e. I cannot access nor see any fields). It's as if I never selected that database. I must shut down filemaker advance and reopen every database. I thought it was corruption in my databases until today. I openend the tutorial from filemaker, lesson 10 and my file 10. When I tried to go from one database to the other (after changing data in it as the tutorial told me to do), I got the same situation. I have one file (using 8.5 Adv on XP) that I just noticed causes a strange Filemaker crash when I exit in certain ways. Doesn't happen after closing any of my other files. Here's what happens: - File has only one window open, maximized. Close the file using the lower x box in upper right corner .... file closes, but then immediately get the old "FileMaker Pro Advanced.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. I am fairly new to v8.5 and am creating a database to capture data over multiple years. Data elements will be the same for each year and I am thinking about a table for each year with the same fields. Is there a way to create one table (Year1) and duplicate it (Year2, Year3, etc)? I see how I can have multiple occurrences of a table but this is just the same table with the same fields isn't it? Am I barking up the wrong tree? Is there another approach? Thanks in advance.

How can I remove the grayed out standard toolbar in my runtime solution? I don't view it when I'm running FileMaker but it shows in my solution.

I created a checkbox field but the checkboxes don't show up. When you click on an item in the list a small square flashes where the checkbox should be, but no checkmark shows up either. Help!

Hello, Filemaker Pro 8.5 Advanced Mac OS X (Tiger.8) When I switch from Browse to Find mode, Filemaker's menubar changes in a very unusual way. The Help menu item is replaced by a black Apple logo that is situated in the middle of the menubar (from left to right), and two Filemaker menu items display (one contains the Sharing menu, the other contains all the rest of the items you'd expect to find). We're trying to figure out how to gain access to a database created for a non-profit and we have built it on our laptop, but need to also use it on the desktop machine once a month. Like another user here, I cannot seem to access full privileges on the desktop machine, even when I log in as Admin using the option key (Mac OS 10.3.9 using FM 8.5 Advanced). No passwords have been created and certainly none is desired on this machine. All fields allowing me to make any modification are grayed out. I have a particular file very large in size 10gb. I was imbedding files into the database and recently changed it to have a short cut to the file. Two problems with the file, when I close the file it tries to compress it and isn't successful, it takes a long time, but there is no error. When I then reopen it says it is scanning for unused blocks. This takes about 20 minutes each time. Recently I opened up another file and it is doing the same thing, scanning for unused blocks. Hi I have developed a small db, centred around project management, and time billing. Everything ran fine, and I set up the account privileges, with no hiccups. There are only 3 users, with varying degrees of privilege. Myself being the full access holder. I have all the user names and passwords. On closing the db and reopening, I automatically accessed (no account name or password requested) the project listing layout (as expected) but the layout tools and define account & privileges are locked out. In the process of trying to resolve a font-related issue for another app, it appears that I may have disabled a font that FM needs. I'm not certain about this but am trying to eliminate possibilities in a methodical fashion. Hi everybody, I moved my database from FM 6.0 to FM 8.0. It contains a change-printer-database correspondig to VB-Scribt on Windows doing a good job (and it was free!) Now it does not work any longer, beeing supported only up to FM 7.0 (I am to unexperienced in Windows VB-Scripts to know, whether you allways need special VB-Scripts for each application-version). Hi all, Is anyone else experiencing this problem with FMP 8.5 Advanced on Mac OS 10.4x? I can no longer copy and paste in ScriptMaker. For example, if I copy a script step (using Copy button or Command-C), the step goes to the clipboard but I can't paste it using Command-V. It only works with the Paste button. That's just mildly annoying. Where it gets really annoying is when I copy text in the Specify Calculation dialog (using either Command-C or Copy from the Edit Menu), I can't paste anything in the dialog. The Paste command in the Edit menu is grayed out, as if there weren't anything compatible to paste from the clipboard, but I know that the text is on the…

Tried search and could not find the answer. If I get 8.5 and develop a file, can a person using 8.0 use the file? Between 8.0 and 7.0 there were no problems. I need to keep that basic compatibility. Thank you.

I always thought it would be cool to change the color of a field based on a calcualtion. Can anyone give me any insight or direction on how I would accomplish this. -Greg

Not sure where to ask this, so I'll put it here. By the time I'm done with my project, I'll have close to 1000 fields defined and a hundred or more value lists (with many value lists having up to several dozen entries). Is that a lot? Am I creating an unwieldy database that will be prone to error, or is this small potatoes?

I have two licenses for FM 8.0 Advanced. I installed them on two PII PCs running WIn 2000. One works fine with the server, the other won't open a hosted file. It tells me that the maximum number of licenses are in use, but that the machine using the license it the one I am trying to run it on. Even with the other machine off, I get this message. There is only one instance of FM8 running on the machine. Why would it conflict with iteslf?

Hi I use FM 7 for the Mac now but I need to switch to the Windows platform. I DL'd the trial version of 8.5 for windows. I can't open the files. Says they are not FM or severly damaged. Some details: I dl'd to a desktop PC burnrd it (and my mac FM files that were BU'd there) to disk and installed on a PC laptop (both with XP). It installed fine and can open the FM app but no luck with the files. Also tried the "recover" route but to no avail. Would an older version of FM work? Please Help! only 29 more days left!

Hi. I have three licenses for Filemaker 8/8.5. They are being used on a network of 8 Mac and PC computers. I never need to have Filemaker active on more than three computers at the same time, but I need to have the capability of having any three of the eight open. Do I need to buy eight licenses, or can I install multiple licenses on each computer? And if I can have multiple licenses, how can I know what license I am using? Thanks.

I have a file with 8 tables and just over 13,000 records. Sometimes it causes the entire FileMaker application to stop responding. It is usually when doing a find in one of the tables, but has also happened when debugging a script that looped through records in a different table. I am using FileMaker Advanced 8.5 and the file is served on a G5 Mac running FileMaker Server 8.0v4. Is there any way to test if this file is corrupted, or any best practices I should be routinely following to keep the file 'clean'?

Hi. We recently upgraded to version 7.0v3 from version 4 (for Windows). A common application was to copy/paste text from a terminal window into a FileMaker text field. This worked fine in version 4 (and works fine in every other application). However, in version 7 the pasted text contains hundreds of white "box" characters—This only affects the Windows version (not Mac). Anyone know how to prevent the input of the extra characters when pasting text into Filemaker. Thanks!
