  1. I have a field that is a "pop-up menu". It has a value list assigned to it. The field is also set up to "include 'other...' item to allow entry of other values" Are there any functions/scripts that can help manage the "Other"? This is what we would like to do: When a user selects Other, we want the field to show: "Other - " We know some users will be lazy and not put the "Other - ", or misspell it, or not follow format.     I just upgraded from Filemaker v5 to v8.5. on some of my layouts they are not printing. So I went into Layout setup, tab Printing, and i'm getting this error: "The selected value must be in the range 0.000 to -420.000, inclusively." after clicking "ok" the cursor is on a box, so I try to change it. the error pops up. I try to change it into the range, error pops up. I try to move to another box, and the error continually pops up, even when I click OK. Attached is a picture of the error.     Hi I have Company contact information page which as a portal that shows a list of personal in that company I want to recreate an pop up window which has Logs of phone discussion I have had with them.   7. Well, looks like this will be my last problem in this solution. So I have set all the fields on the layout as follows: Allow entry only in Find Mode, and allow the Tab Key to go next object. This is so the users will only be able to find results, not edit them. However, again, even though I've checked and rechecked them, three of the fields when the user *attempts* top enter the field, gives a dialog which says: "This action cannot be performed because the required table is missing."     I am pretty new at this, but I have built a few small databases for various personal groups and projects. Currently I have a database that looks great in layout mode, but when I go to Preview (and when I print it) there is a large band of blank space between the body and the footer (both have patterned backgrounds) and the pagination does not print fully, as it is too low on the page. I cannot make a footer "slide up", and I have tried to adjust the size of both body and footer, to no avail. I have searched the Help, but found nothing that helps. Many thanks for any advice.

    Hi, I have a set of fields which vary greatly in terms of the amount of text in each filed. I have set each field for on a print only layout, and have resized them big enough to accommodate the largest amount of text any record has. Each field is placed one directly above the other, and each field has a field label to the left. I then set all fields and labels to the same setting in Sliding/Printing: Sliding Up based on All Above.     I know this isn't possible "natively" in FMP, but I'm wondering what the best way to fake it might be. Within a portal, I need to vary what field/control type is displayed. This will be based on a categorical field in the related table. Basically, for each record in the portal I'll need to hide one control and show another. For some portal recs, I want to show a drop-down list. For others, I want to show a checkbox group. In no case will I need to show both for a single portal row, and I want if possible to show up in the same horizontal position.   12. I am an artist and professional photographer who uses Filemaker to keep track of the editing and printing decisions behind my final prints. In the record for a given image, I have a sequence of 10 fields in which I log the major editing moves I make in Photoshop, and they contain entries such as: "Contrast layer, overlay blend, 20% opacity." Because the editing sequence is unique for each image, it doesn't make sense to organize these as Drop-down lists.   20. I am designing a print layout that is orginized by Contact ID records. I have a seperate table that contains phone numbers. For each Contact ID record, I want to display the related records from the Phone Numbers table. I would prefer not to use a portal with sliding settings, because as far as I can tell, an emty entry line apppears below the bottom portal record. Due to the nature of our business, there can be any number of employees on for a given shift (from 1-20 people), as well as multiple shifts per day. I would like to set everything up like a spreadsheet, each person in it's own field. I would like to have, by default, 4 spaces for personnel with the ability to add more as necessary for that particular day.     Hey everyone, I am creating a quote output for my customers. Is there a way to make a "boundry" line vertically across the body to seperate different fields. It seems like it would be pretty easy but I can't get it to work in preview mode. I eaither can't get it to cover the whole space or it will not show up because some of it is not in the body.     Hi dumbo question (its the simple things in life that are challenging): I have a layout with a header that has my "Navigation Buttons" that you need to navigate my app. The Body has the fields. The navigation buttons are set not to print thru the sliding/printing dialog. When I print a record, a large gap is now left on the paper at the top where the header is. Nothing is in it as i told the nav buttons not to print. Question: Can I avoid that gap, ie not print the header at all?     Just winding down a FM project. The idea is to spin it offf as a stand alone application PC & Mac. So, after doing all the development on my Mac, I tested it on the PC. Looks terrible. Seems the PC doesn't come out of the box with Helvetica. The entire interface is helvetica.. Arrgh! Is there a best choice for a font that works cross platform?   48. I'm creating a 'standard' set of buttons to go on all layouts (navigation, return to menu etc). In the past I have simply added the graphic elements or images to each layout. However, on this particular project some users will be viewing the database (as a Filemaker client) over a VPN link, hence speed is a major factor. If I use global fields to store the graphics and use these fields as my buttons, will this increase the speed for the users? I guess what is mean is, does Filemaker 'cache' images in much the same way as a web browser? Anyone else experimented with this and have any test results to share? Thanks

    Hello, I wasn't search which forum section to post this! Here's my question: Most Dell mouses nowdays come with a small middle "scroll" section, that allows users to easily scroll through documents. However, in Filemaker this can cause BIG problems. For example, if you are inputting data into one record, and accidently hit the middle scroll on the mouse, you could be entering data into the wrong record, and not realize it, because you had accidentally scrolled through several records records without realizing what had happened.     Hi All, I'm using FMP 8 Adv to create a new database that uses portals and have found a bug I had not experienced before. When entering data in a portal field, with a transparent background, all editable portal fields turn gray. The user ends up entering and editing black text on a gray background. I have been unable to fix this, except by adding a background color to the field. I don't want background color, since it I have alternating color bars in the portal.   59. Is there a way to specify as opposed to averaging (layout/arrange/distrib) the spacing between selected objects? I'm working on recreating a layout that displays small grouped tables in various areas of the page. I've kinda figured out that if I do the math and then position and lock the top and bottom objects in the group I can get pretty close to getting the space I want between my objects vertically. But that's time consuming, not exact, and that doesn't work horizontally since all the text objects are various widths.     I am creating a new window with specific size settings that closes when the user is done editing info. For some reason, it changes the size of the original window if it was maximized when the button to run this script is pressed. Any ideas?

    Hi everyone -- in using Brian Dunning's excellent Chartmaker Pro 7 in my recently upgraded FM Advanced 8.5, I have noticed a lot of weirdness in trying to set field and rep widths. For instance, when Chartmaker calls for a rep width of 1 pixel, I cannot get FMA8.5 to cooperate. I have tried to mouse-drag the primary/left-most rep to 1 px, but the object size viewer only allows to 2 px... If I try to manually enter a 60-px width for a 60-rep field, it defaults to 61 px..? I thought zooming in, a la Illustrator and other graphics apps, would afford more precise setting, but not so... Any advice, or at least a witness!?

    Using FP6. Last year I created a labels layout of 40 labels, 4 across and 10 down, which I need to do again. According to Avery website, this should be label L7654. I have US, UK and AUS labels in the FP program files but when I try to create the layout, this label and its inkjet equivalent are not there. Is there a way of checking the layout I created last year to confirm the Avery number or, even better, a way to copy a layout from one file to another which has the same fields? Any suggestions gratefully received.

When I am browsing records and I choose to view my records as a table, I can only see about 50 of the fields as I scroll horizontally.     I hoping i've got the right area to post this query. I'm trying to get it that when my solution opens a new window from a button click that the new window in front is the only one selectable and if you click on the back window it stays in the back until you have clicked a close/commit button on the front layout. I've had rough success with this through the pause script step in the button script that creates the new window, but doing it this way needs the operator to click the cancel/continue button in the status area.     Hello I'm designing a database where I'd like to have some fields hiden on my print layout if they're empty. The fields in question will rarely have info in them. Is there a way of hiding them (or more specifically their labels) from a layout if the fields themselves are empty? I can't think of any little tricks to achieve this.     I have a database that relates to another database that contains 5 competitors and their monthly spending. Each competitor has their own record in the other database and their names are contained in the same field. I want to be able to bring each competitors spend into a single record on a TAB layout and show each comeptitors spend.     I am have a strange problem where the cursor appears to be out of alignment. The cursor is 5 or 6 spaces to the right of the characters being typed.     Hi, I have an invoice, which contains a portal, which brings in the orders that have the same 'invoice number' as the current record in the invoice layout. It has multiple pages, which are basically duplicates of the first but the portals are set to display the next records, so 1-3 for the first page and 4-6 for the second etc. I have read that it isn't proper database practice to print portals though, but I can't think of any other way to do it.     I am Previewing an Invoice-LineItem layout that is based on a List View of the LineItems table, and uses subsummary parts (breaking on Invoice ID) to print the top and bottom portions of the Invoice. Usually it works: more often than not, as I page through the previewed page images, everything looks right. Every now and then, however, I come to an Invoice where none (or almost none) of the fields are filled in. Here's the kicker: if I page forward, and then page back to the blank invoice, usually it's properly filled in. I know I can duplicate layouts, but say I have a set of standard buttons that appear on every layout in the same place, and I want to add or change a button, I have to create (or copy and paste) them everytime.     Hi, I saw/heard this somewhere (maybe maybe matt petrowski???) that if you rename a layout in 8.5 the change to that name will no longer automatically propagate throughout your the file. this is a 'gotcha' i think. I am going to call this 'auto renameing'. In in previous versions if you renamed the layout, it would be renamed everywhere in the file. I would like to have a summary of the subsummary parts, the same way a trailing grand summary would work except multiple occurances on a page. When an order is complete I would like to be able to click on the complete button and have it put some kind of stamp across the front of it that says "closed" I know I have seen this done before. I know I can sort them by right clicking in a field but I want to change the order that they are in when I open the database - at present they are in creation order, so if I create a record for a journal volume 9 issue 3 then create volume 9 issue 1 afterward, my database will always show issue 3 before 1.     OK so I recreated the nav buttons onto my header along with a record count field. But I have a script that is a goto and come back script, in which to come back you need to click continue or to stay there you click cancel in the status area. Is there any way to get these onto my recreated nav area in the database? If not is there a work around to only show the status area when the script requires it? I assume that show status area then hiding it will solve this issue?

    Hi All I am having a weird problem. I have a date field named "activityDate". This field has been formatted to display date as "dd/mm/yyyy". I use this field in a Portal. The problem is when I click on this field and enter a date and then exit out of this field, it changes month to day and day to month. Eg: if I enter 11/12/2006 for 11th, dec, 2006, then it gets changed to 12/11/2006 when I exit the field. It works fine if "dd" has a number greater then 12. Any help would be greatly appreciated....     Hey everyone, I have a Customer Quote report that totals line items I have quoted. Everything is just how I want it except one thing. Most quotes contain 4 items or less and I have had no problem keeping it all on one page. Because of this I put the totaled summary field in the footer so it will always print at the bottom of the page. Well I just did a quote that needed 2 pages. As you may know, now the "grand total" is not only on page two(where I want it), but on page one. In these situations, because it will happen again, how (if possible) can I make the Grand Total only appear on the last page at the bottom.
