I need to get data that is organized in rows so that I can view it in columns. I have data that take this form: P1 | progA | T1 | 23 P1 | progB | T1 | 31 P1 | progA | T2 | 25 P1 | progB | T2 | 39 P2 | progA | T1 | 10 P2 | progB | T1 | 33 P2 | progA | T2 | 19 P2 | progB | T2 | 32 ... and so on from P1 to P2000. The fourth column is populated by scores at time-periods T1 and T2 for two different tests (progA and progB). I need to report on it so it looks like this: P1 | T1 | T2 progA | 23 | 25 progB | 31 | 39 ... and so on. Hello! I have a people-table that has the following fields; Firstname, Surname, ID, Salary and SalaryHistory. They are all text fields. Now I want to create a custom layout that allows me to modify my people-info. At the top of the page I want a drop down list that contains the first name and surname of all people in the list. When clicking a person in the list I want the layout to jump to that person (record) in the table. The drop down list should be read only, so that modifying people in it is not possible. From the other threads, I've put together a script that will automatically find records between two dates using fields (startdate and enddate). I would like the script to be executed automatically when the user changes the dates. To accomplish this, I tried making the field a button that executes that script; however, once I added the script to that button, it no longer allows one to type in to the field. Instead, it seems to just keep executing the script every time I put the cursor over the button to type. Greetings, I have a file with 3 tables - contacts, events, joiner. The joiner table has the index fields for contacts and events as well as a number of fields I want to be selected by checkbox, for example - accepted invitation, attended, declined, etc. I created a layout where Events is main table and a portal for contact. This part works fine. I have the checkbox fields, (accepted, attended, decline) in the portal but I cannot edit these. The whole field flashes and that's all it does. Hello, I am having problems printing barcodes in landscape on the page. If I print in Portrait, the barcodes are crisp and thin, in landscape they are thick and blotchy. Is there a fix for this? I 've tried two different True Type fonts, same results. Top is printed in Landscape Bottom is Portrait

Hi. I have 2 report pages (Browse;List) that look almost identical other than one has a Footer and the other does not. In the body of both these pages I have a list of records, and on the footer of the second layout I have details of the record. On the header I have a button that Hides or Shows this record detail, and it just switches between the two layouts. Rather than having two layouts, is it possible to view/hide the footer on the layout, or do I just leave it the way it is. Its just that if I make changes to the layout (database still in development) I have to make them to two layouts rather than one. Anybody got any ideas please? Greg

I have created a custom menu with ONLY the features I want, however, one feature continues to show up even tho I never added it, "Tools" and this is a problem, as I do not want the customer to have the option to change the menu features. How do I remove the "tools" from my custom menu? Thanks :P

I am semi-new at FileMaker. I have been charged with taking our customer database electronic and I have been able to model the layout of our paper system. We deal with prospects and their contacts and leave notes on the cards. I am interested in knowing if I can add a portal or some list to the right side of the card that lists all of the cards that are scheduled for today showing the following fields (Counselor, Prospect Name, Next Contact Date). Hi, I had the task of "linking" several databases together. The organization had two separate databases that sometimes shared the same information. To link them up would create more problems than they solved and also they only had to occasionally look things up. Rather than us a look up calc fields, I created a Web viewer that accessed the other database that was publish via the IWP engine. In this was they can access each others data and not interfere with each other. This might be a cool new way of using the WV to share info.

I am supporting an FM 7.0 database that is a company manual that flips between layouts in a fashion similar to hyperlinks. It is used almost exclusively in browse mode. Unfortunately one of the dynamic reports I had to create in this "manual" requires a header part. The layout is meant to display in a way that mimics an 8.5 X 11.0 sheet of paper. Unfortunately the boundary between the header and body part creates a line that shoots off to the right for the entire length of the layout spoiling the image of the page. Is there anyway to hide this unsightly line in browse mode without removing the needed header? Thanks.

FMP8 Adv, WinXP The Background: Layout 1 in Table A (Students) shows a student record along with a portal which lists the assignments selected for that student. Layout 2 in Table B (Assignments) shows the same student record and a portal listing the complete list of more than 1000 available assignments for the course. :o Ok so I am brand new to this program. I need to make a database of test results. I need this to have 2 pages then I can get to by pressing a "Page 2" button or "Back to Page 1" Button. I am not sure how to get multiple pages though. I figured out how to get 2 pages in the preview layout but I need it to be 2 separate pages in the browse layout. Hi: I work at a school as a DBA and I am trying to create a cummulative report for each student graduating 8th grade. I have a 'People' table that has a 1:M relationship with my 'Student Roster' table (each current student People type can have many related student roster records)...The 'Student Roster' table has a 1:M relationship with 'Class Roster' which has a 1:M relationship with 'Classes' table ('Class Roster' table acts as a Join table between 'Student Roster' and 'Classes'). Hello, I'm fairly new to filemaker. I've had to take over use of it in the current company I work for, as its the customer database program my boss has been using for about 15 years now. I had no experience with it when I started here, but in time through the help file and such I've learned alot. Whats stumping me however, is when I want to print a collection of records. It treats every record as a separate page. Even though there is room to fit at least 2 records per page. My boss obsesses over paper costs, any help you can give on how to set up filemaker to print this way would be very appreciated. thank you!

Hi Gang, I have a portal which I have to sort by a Timestammps field. This field is automatically populutaed at some point by using the get(timestamp) function. Now when I look at the portal which should be sorted chronologically the dates are sorted like this: 6/8/2007 xx:xx AM 6/7/2007 xx:xx PM 6/2/2007 xx:xx AM 6/12/2007 xx:xx PM 6/1/2007 xx:xx AM (my system uses the American date format of mm/dd/yyyy) The 6/12 date should be first but it's next to the 6/1. I have a simple layout with 5 tabs and I would like to execute code when a user clicks on the tab. I put a button over the tab but I notice that the user has to click 2 times -- the first time brings the tab to focus and the 2nd click will execute the script. Is there a way to have one click of the tab go to the tab page and execute the script. Am I missing something here? Dom

I've taught myself the basic and advanced concepts in filemaker pro, Masted most of them. The only problem: Lack of layout experience. I have purchased the Theme Library 3 from scriptology.com - it is a great start, but actually applying it is a bit challenging. Could someone point me in the right direction for how to make better and more efficient use of my space? I have taken several stabs at making a proper fmp database for my company and have always hit the brick wall when it comes to the interface. I'm using Filemaker to compile a printed report of many different records. One of the fields contains large blocks of text. I would like to have this field in the layout/report change size based on the record data, and information after it to change positions based on size. That was probably unclear, so here's examples. If the data in that field is just a short paragraph, it would stay on one page, and whatever is after it would show up right after it ended. Hi, I have two fields on my screens that act as titles for that page. They are global and as I move to each page with those fields on them they are set to the screen name, and the description of that page - thus allowing me to keep my layouts fairly universal. Anyhow, when I go to these screens and Set Field for the values they are to display, they stay in a mode that appears as those the field has just been entered. I have tried various things to "move" the focus off that field and whilst the cursor moves the field stays in entry mode. Can anybody give me a tip here please. Greg

I'm using a portal on an invoice layout to show the inventory items and their stock codes. The portal is set up to be filtered by matching strings: if you type a search string into a custom dialog and click search, it does a find, and puts the record id's of the found set into a global field as a new-line-separated list. The portal relationship is simply between the global field and the inventory table. Works great. I want to add another button besides "Search" : "Show All". This is my first database, so I suspect the solution will be obvious to somebody. I set up 4 tabs and then I entered fields within each of those tabs. Everything looks just fine when I am in layout mode, but then I switch to Browse mode and each tab contains all of the fields from each of the other tabs, resulting in a big mess! Hello all, I have a database for a school. I need to make IDcards with a photo of the student. Is there a way to take a photo with a webcam and insert it into the file, all from within filemaker? I am using a portal to create new records in a related field, however, each time I enter new data it only makes 2 records in the relating table and updates them with the last 2 I entered. It also erases the old records if I start a new record in the layout the protal is in and saves 2 new records based on the new primary key (auto serialized). I have three date fields where a client can choose three dates for a tour. The fields are 1st choice, 2nd choice, and 3rd choice. I want a fourth field to have the date that the client actually gets. I tried using the List function, but I cannot choose or select one of the dates. I want a drop down list, but can't figure out how to use a value list in this instance. Any suggestions? I am publishing a database solution via IWP that consists of project tasks. Each project manager can edit their tasks within a portal to the tasks table. I haven't been able to re-produce the problem on my end, but I have print screens from the one user showing how the drop-down fields, and subsequently their values, remain static on the page, while everthing else moves as appropriate with left/right or up/down scrolling in edit moe=de. Has anyone else seen anything like this or know how I can alleviate it? Thanks in advance. P.S.The browser with the problem and mine without are both IE 6.

Here is my problem and I cannot wrap my head around it... I have about 3000 sites in 6 States that need to be visited in certain intervals (About 10 times a year each). I have a sites table with all the information and a visits table, both are related by site number. The sites table actually has a field that counts how often a site has been seen. What I want now is a one page summary, per state, giving me a count of how many sites have been seen once, twice, three times, etc. I have something along those lines where it list every site in that fashion, but that turns into a 200 page report, where all I need is one page. Is it possible to have a portal show all the records of a particular layout? I have a layout (Vans) with six records. The first five are particular vans and their seating capacity. The six record is labeled "Unassigned." Every person is automatically give the foreign key ID for the "Unassigned" van. I have one portal in the van layout that lists all those people and I have included buttons to change the foreign key and reassigning them to another van. So far so good. I have that up and running. Need some help! I have a db w/ multiple layouts. I created the attached layout the other day. It is a letter using merged fields. When I go to the layout in the browse or preview mode, it looks excatly like I want it. Then once I hit the print button, the screen changes. I have attached a before and after screen shots.. The first 2 pages are before the 2nd two are after.(The printed copy looks just like the screen after I print. But only part of the page prints.) Two of the tables I have in my database are a Budgets table and a Budget Line Details table. They are related by three fields, Fiscal Year, Location, and Funding Source. I have a layout setup with Budgets fields above a portal to the Budget Line Details table. Everything works and looks fine on the data entry layout. I can't think of a good term to use for Contact Methods (which is pretty weak) that encompasses phone numbers and e-mail addresses. I want to name my Phone Numbers table something else, as well as label a portal appropriately. Any ideas for a term that covers e-mail, fax numbers, cell phone numbers, home phone numbers, pagers, etc?

I've got a portal that points to related rows via a simple foreign key in the child table. When I type in one of the portal's fields, the row "disappears" after I leave the field. I know the row I was typing in is supposed to stay there and add a new empty/insertion row at the end of the portal. But this is not occurring. If revisit the parent record, then I can see the proper number of rows in the portal -- so the new record was properly created in the database. But this requires me to flip to a different parent row and then back again. Could this somehow be related to new layouts for the child table? Hi Gang, I am stuck. I have a table which contains a field with "Status" for each entry. The "Status" could be things like "Active", "Submittted", "Completed". I created separate instances of this table to create separate portals which show the different statuses. The tables and the relationships all work fine, but the problem I am running into is when I create a new entry on the table, the newly created entry does NOT show up unless I change the status of an existing item. I have a portal that shows related pictures as thumbnails. Each record can have as few as 1 and as many as 30. I would like to see as many pictures at once as possible - My vertical space on the form is limited to 6 thumbnails, but I could easily have multiple columns of 6. Right now I have two portals next to each other the first one[no scrollbar] showing pic 1-6 and the second one [w/ scrollbar] 7 through [...] Since the pictures are sequential it would be nice to see all of them move up as you scroll down, instead of the first 6 showing all the time and 7 through [...] disappearing. I created a layout using the report wizard and I had the wizard create the script for printing. Question : the script puts the layout in preview mode. I tried putting a button on the layout but the button can't be pressed in preview mode. How does one go from preview to the ability to PRINT it out?

We have had FM7 and in myt scriptsteps I have created new windows and put them outside the screen so that they are not viewabale by the users Possision -100 for example in the New Window script step. Now in Filemaker 8.5 this doesent work, and that makes the the new window pop up viewabale to the users. How do I hide the windows? Regards Jocke

Not sure if this is the right place to post it but here it is: Some of my layouts are quite long so that they need to be scrolled down in order to see everything. The problem is that people are used to scroll up and down with the third mouse button or click wheel - whatever you call it. In FM it scrolls through the records and not up and down in the layout. How would I disable that mouse button or make it so that it scrolls up and down it the same layout and not through the records. Thank you.,

This seems like an incredibly stupid question- but I've pored over the forums with no luck. How do I change/add the label of a button. I created several layouts containing buttons that, when viewed over IWP, are only clickable in the blank space - not the area of the text box. I figured out that creating a button with the button tool fixes this problem- but I don't want to recreate 20 buttons.

Hello, I'm having an issue with a portal that I'm using in my one database. What is happening is I have a portal that is used to display products from another table (invoicing database). The portal pulls all the data fields just fine (e.g. Prod name, color, weight, etc.) when using the PRODUCT SERIAL NUMBER (FMP generated) as the select/trigger field. What I need to happen is all this data to be pulled from the products table using another field instead, I want to use the PRODUCT ID field (not FMP generated) to pull all the products data field information (e.g. Prod name, color, weight, etc.). I have tried everything possible in my knowledge, I red a lot of manuals but the problem is still there. You can see it from the enclosed PDF. Sorry is in Italian language, hope it can be clear anyway. This is an invoice, the problem stands on the bottom of the page. The Blue and Gray stripe shouldn’t be there but on the next page, but it doesn’t. This stripe is placed in a “Summary when sorted by” part and represent the title of all the subsequent lines that are on the "Body" part. After using FMPro4 for years on XPPro, all of a sudden (no apparent reason)changing page orientation from Portrait to Landscape won't hold: on screen it looks landscape, but prints in Port. and when I look at page setup again the setting has reverted to Port. Also, then FMPro "suddendlly" quits. Happens with networked files, and local files. Different files too. Any idea what's up?

I have 5 tables: CDs, Songs, Contacts, CDSongs, CDSent CDs - list of CDs in library Songs - Song names Contacts - List of contacts CDSongs - Which songs are on which CDs CDSent - Which contacts got which CDs I've been asked to provide one report that lists the Names of the people that received CDs and the dates they were sent (CDSent) along with the songs they received. I'm guessing if I had a later edition of Filemaker this would be easier, but is there any way to do this with FM5? I have seen other similar topics already but they didnt help. I have a point of sale system with a portal. With products and stuff etc... I want to have a button outside of the portal which will delete the last transaction on the portal. But when i make a script which highlights the previous transaction and then the delete portal row, it deletes the entire point of sale for that particular sale! Plz help.

I use Helvetica 9 pt extensively; even have a QuicKey to turn everything in a field to Helvetica 9 pt because it was a comfortable and compact size. When I went up to 8.5, I can hardly read that size of font because its so teeny weensy! In fact, all my font layouts that use Helvetica are screwy. What happened? And can I get back to where I was - font size wise? Appreciatively, Elaine (I've used FMP since it came out & never had this happen in an upgrade)

Greetings, I have a table which has the two fields, Listname and ListID. The ListID is unique per record and auto-entered, the Listname is simple the name. For example a record would have a ListID of "1001" and it's associated Listname would be "Heiroglyphics Today" I created a value list with a pull down menu to populate a global field. Since "1001" doesn't tell the user anything helpful I need them to see the actual Listname. But, I need to store the ListID to assure the correct record will be used later on in scripts, etc. I can make the Listname show in the value list but once selected all I see is the ListID. For reasons best not explained here, I want a valuelist that pulls from a table that contains two fields (Name and Order) that will sort the list by order but only display name. I've created an Order = Order self join and set up a valuelist based on two fields to accomplish this, but I can't find a way to hide the order (second) field when selecting from the valuelist, even though the list only gets populated with name (first) field data. Is there a way to have a list that is sorted by a field that doesn't appear in the list?

I am a FM developer in a firm that does not officially approve FileMaker's use. I am tolerated because, so far, they cannot do what I can do. Hello, I recently upgraded from FM7 to FM8.5 and now many of my reports are printing incorrectly. I did a bit of sleuthing, and it appears that the line spacing settings are slightly different in 8.5. Single-spaced lines are bunched closer together in FM7 than the are in FM 8.5. The upshot of this is that the text on many of my layouts is now getting cut off when I print it (and when displayed on screen). I can go in manually and adjust the line spacing height from 1.0 lines to, say, 0.8 lines (in Text Formatting > Paragraph > Line Spacing), but this is really tedious and would have to be done in ALL of my 40+ layouts. I'm curious as to how others handle the creation, editting and deletion of portal records. I currently have a portal set up with an "Add" & "Delete" button in the row. The remainder of the row I have a button that brings up a new window so the user can edit that portal rows information. On the edit layout I have a Cancel and Save button. When the user clicks a portal row to edit I put the field information in global variables in case the user decides to cancel on the edit layout I can set the fields back to their original values. This may be a simple question, but I haven't figured out the answer yet... I made a subsummary report, that is grouped together by team member. It looks very good, except for when someone's info extends onto the next page, then I cannot tell who's data is on the following page. I am building a database for my cabinetshop. I have a columnar type layout that lists door sizes. To make the math easier to understand I have the dimension fields displayed with a graphic representation of the cabinet. This graphic + dimension is stored in a portal. If the cabinet has two doors a portal with a double door cabinet presents itself. If the cabinet has one door a portal with a single door cabinet presents itself. Hi folks, I use an event-based script trigger to populate the next portal row with looked up or calculated data when data for a field on the previous portal row gets edited, provided that one first clicks outside the portal. But clicking outside of the portal to trigger a script isn't much easier than clicking a button to trigger the script. It would be nice to be able to tab out of the edited field (an action that now tabs me into the next portal row, which stays blank) and have the tabbing trigger population of the next portal row. Is this possible?

Is there a way to make a particular field entry accessible or inacessible based on another flag field? Or better yet, is it possible to make layout items disappear or appear based on the flag? Let me try to explain. I have a layout on which a user will check "Yes" or "No" on a flag field with radio buttons. What I would like to do is make another field box either disappear or become inacessible in browse mode if the flag field is "No", and conversely appear or become accessible if the flag is "Yes". However, I'm not sure how to approach this problem. Any nudge in the right direction would be most appreciated.

Is there a way to mask or disable tabs so that clicking onto them will not cause you to move from one tab location to another. I like the elegance of tabs for minimizing layouts but would like to constrain navigation to scripts (that go to objects within a tab). I can make it disappear visually by laying a graphic object over the top of it but if you click onto the graphic object you still activate the new tab. Any ideas? Thanks, Jarvis

I've figured out how to hide the status bar and the tool bars but I can't figure out how to hide or deactivate the tool bar at the bottom of the window. Particularly the button that lets you switch between Find Mode, Preview Mode, Etc. (directly adjacent to the zoom buttons) I know this seems like a small thing but some of the people I work with can destroy a database by walking by a computer while looking at it! Thanks, Mel

I have a notes field that I want my users to view and be able to scroll BUT I do not want them to be able to enter the field to enter any data. It seems that filemaker will not scroll a field WITHOUT actually entering the field. Hi Gang, I have a small layout which contains a handful of fields. One of the fields is a "Drop Down List" field which shows the contents of a table with a very large number of records. This is a Global field that has no Autocalculation. I have it configured to "Auto complete from value List". The weird behavior is when I click on the desired value, the field gets assigned the value, but the drop-down list drops down again. I have to click on an empty area of the layout o get rid of it. I tried setting the Tab layout order so it's at the begining of the order list with items following it, but it still does this. I tried setting it to a a Popup Menu behavior…

so i want to get rid of the sidebar in a database i'm making, but i'm running into a problem of being able to browse records that i have found in a search. is there any way to create a field that will show you the total number of found records and another one that shows which record you are currently browsing (just like in the sidebar)? i don't like the idea of giving up so much layout space for just a little bit of information, so any help with that would be greatly appreciated!
