    <> Should I list my solution for others who might have the same question? Hello all, I have never had the need to try this technique so I don't know if it is possible, but I am hoping it is. I tried searching the archives but did not find anything that specifically addressed this question. Is it possible to set the contents of one portal to another portal where the relationship in that portal "allows for the creation" of records? I can get it to work for the first row in the portal, but not the next one down that does "not yet exist." Thanks if anyone can help. Steve

    Hello, Well I’m stuck again. I am still working on my “Victim” database here at work and have a question about photos. I have an area with a container for the victim’s photo. What I want to do is have the container that is not used for a victim’s photo default to a “No Photo” image in the container. I have the “No Photo” JPEG constructed, but I do not know how to make the Photo Container default to this image. Hopefully to clarify: when a new victim record is created, the photo container automatically shows my “No Photo” JPEG until the user adds a photo of the victim to that container. Can this be done?     When I create scroll bar in my portal it is invisible. The scroll works but i just cant see the scroll bar. the portal tool makes room for the scroll bar, and the portal looks different when show a vertical scroll is selected, but invisible. Anyone seen this?

    As much as I have tried, I cannot find a way to get the 'Directions' option of Google Maps to work. The basic code I am trying to use is: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&am%20p;saddr=/*source address*/&daddr=/*target address*/ The Google Maps page comes up, but only with a map of the target, it doesn't give me the directions pane.

    I've looked around a bit and not found what I'm looking for, so here goes... For each Contact record I can have several phone numbers. The Phones are in their own related table and shown in a portal window on the Contact layout. What I want to do is allow one and only one of the Phone numbers for each Contact to be marked as "Main", thus making it unique in that portal for that Contact record. If I were doing this in MySQL I'd index the combination of "Main" and "ID", making the combination unique, but I don't see how to do this in FMP.     Hello, Is it possible to enlarge a container image if this field is viewed via a portal? In my experience, portal fields are only large enough for alphnumeric characters which results in container images impossibly small. I would like to be able to adjust an image to about 1-inch in height and also be associated with the portal fields to which it is associated. Or perhaps there is a way to script a larger version of the associated image in the parent file?     Are there any rules regarding amending fields whilst using multiple windows? We are using FMP over Lan network and several users have queried that information they thought they had added to fields has apparrently disappeared. The database is a "One File/Multiple Table" system. Is it possible that it is the use of multiple windows that could cause a problem?

    I'm new with FileMaker and read some of the topics about filtering value lists etc. But I'm having a parent-child problem with my program: say I have a Category-table. I want to make a difference between a main category and a sub-category. When I create a new category, i need to select if it is a subcategory or a main category. In parentID I want a value list that displays only the category's that are marked 'main category'.   16. I want to be able to display something like the attached picture. I have a table with project names that are organized into categories and I want to be able to display them sorted by their categories with category name dividers between the items in the list. This is obviously possible, and quite simple when using a sorted column/list report and having things separated by layout parts. But I want this look when in a standard browse mode looking essentially at a portal. I can probably create a mockup of this by using some graphics and some cumbersome sorting algorythms with relational filters, but I'd think there should be an easier way. Any ideas?

  17. i have filemaker 8 on one computer,networked to 8.5 on another one, It has been working like charm for long time on my EMR in the clinic, now there is a problem, when you are typing inside a field and you hit enter to start a new line it prompts you to save the file and exit the whole think, that happens on both computers, if you restart the main computer it works fine for a while then that behavior happens again, any ideas?

  19. For months I've been trying to come up with a method to 'hide' the first field in a value list after it has been selected. I want to use a value list that draws from a table and stores the key field while always and ONLY displaying the 2nd field. For example, I have a table called reps that has a rep_id field, and a rep_fullname field. On an order table's layout, I have a field for 'rep' which is a value list that draws from the reps table.     I am not sure if this is where I should post this question but.... I have a script that finds the current events in a db (FM 8.5). Current meaning active events that haven't happened yet. The layout I view these events is in list form and I would like to be able to quickly spot the events that share the same date by having their displayed fields ( Artist, Venue, Start date, End date, and Engineer status) backgrounds change from white to a color.     Hi I have a date field in the header section of a report format that is not printing, but can be seen in both Browse and Preview mode. In the header section in Browse mode there are buttons, that are not printed, and a title field that is printed in the finished report. These are set appropriately. When it comes to the print out there is no date just the outline of the field. I have checked the font colour, background colour, sliding/printing settings, but can't seem to find the reasons for the problem. Any help is gratefully received Thanks :)

    FMP 8.0v3 Avery 5160 address labels 2.625" x 1.0" The automatically-generated layout for Avery 5160 is only printing 9 rows of labels per page. Should be 10. I'm totally confused by how to configure. The top left corner of the top left label is at 0.5" from the top and 0.375" from the left (of the physical 8.5x11 sheet). Each 2-5/8" x 1" label is separated from the next by a 0.125" gutter horizontally and a 0.0" space vertically.     Hello All: I am new to this forum. Hopefully I am posting this in the right spot. I have a database with a field that is set to auto complete using previously entered values. I am using this field for the names of current client projects. I would like to delete items from the index when a project is completed. But when I go to the Insert Index menu and try to delete an item, it won't let me do this. Can someone tell me if there is a way to do this? If I need to just clear the entire Index periodically I am okay with that. It will get reloaded as I enter current projects again. Thanks Suzanne

Rather than creating separate confidential and nonconfidential fields for each piece of info, I was hoping it might be possible to have a checkbox for fields that can be activated when the info is confidential.   32. I am using 8.5 adv and I am trying to fill a field in my Assignments TO from a related Position TO. I am filtering the portal by programs. I have a dozen programs and almost a thousand positions all total. The filter is working. When I select a program from the filtered global field it enters that program key in the foreign match key of the assignments TO. It also filters the positions for the selected program in the portal of the Position TO.     Is there a reasonably forthright technique to populate a value list using the contents of a repeating field? I have a global repeating field that contains the current acceptable values for a particular user-entered field. The values in the global field can be modified, if ever needed, by a system administrator. There are only six repetitions in the field. I've searched, but haven't been able to find an answer to this simplest of cases. My own efforts have resulted in "this value list will not work because the field cannot be indexed".     I have a value list (company) that has grown too big and I want to move it to a new table. I didn't know it at the time, but I should have created a separate company with a relationship and a pop-up menu from the project table to the company table. I know how to create the relationship but how do I move the company data to the new Company table and still keep it connected with each original project record. I tried auto-enter, calculated result, COMPANY::company = PROJECT::company but it doesn't seem to work across tables.

    I'm working on a database for my babysitting business. Right now, I'm trying to create a portal in the Jobs page that shows what sitters are available for the given job time and date. I have successfully created a portal that shows available sitters but it uses a script to work. I'd like the portal to automatically populate availible sitters for the selected job using time and date criteria. Can anyone help? I've included the work-in-progress database.   39. Hi, How do you assign a script to a tab? Lets say I have a five tab panel. The user is in Tab1. Every tab is assigned an object name (TAB1, TAB2, etc). The user clicks TAB3. I need to execute several actions and checks before going to the selected tab. How do you do it? I do have a solution already, but I do not like it (because of aesthetical reasons).   40. In searching the forum I see the recommended solution to making a multi page cover page is to drag the Title Header down past one page tall. I've dragged and dragged until now it's down to 46 inches. My cover letter text cuts off mid line at the bottom of page 1, and the body of the report starts at the top of page 2. Half the cover letter is cut off. Do I need to drag it further? or am I making a different mistake (margins perhaps?)? The multi page body of the report works fine. I've not tried the multi page bottom material of the report yet.

A simple circle won't show (created with the FM tool) or any other pretty things I added "Unless I change them into a graphic in say photoshop" and cut and paste it in... It works very well for our purposes, and has been highly customized to make our lives easy (this is the truly magical benefit of FileMaker Pro).     Hi I have produced a layout formating a report for printing. Users add info to the two columns and they change the size of the column so there is not too much white space (as and if required). Unfortunately the resize option is not working for the user. I have checked the tick box for resizing columns, checked the priviledges of the individual, checked the page margins, but the user still has no access to resizing the column part of the layout. Am I missing something here? The full access user is able to resize columns in Browse mode but other users are unable to. Thanks for any guidance

    Find via Tabbed Portals ... need a simpler method. The sample file below shows a very basic version of a technique I've been using to enable the user to specify three different groups of results and have them available as tab-selected portals. It has worked just fine up until now. The problem is that I now want to expand the layout to support up to 12 portals. Recently I am favoring just storing the references based on being able to obtain the path to the PDF in question. Here is the problem: I want to print this book. I created a summary that shows the PO total less payments = balance. The problem is the payments total that is a summary field in the payments table won't update when the PO number is changed unless you click in the field and then out of it. Please help.

    I've got no problems with my portals but i have an asthetics question and mb someone has run into this? After i create the first record in the portal row Filemaker seems to automatically jump down and create a new row below and iam seeing the go to releated record arrow i created and some of the calculation fields show zeros etc even though i havent selected something on that row yet. Is this a bug? or is it something i just have to deal with if i want to use a portal.

    Hi, I am a FM newbie. My database is a simple contact list, from which I create mailing labels. I have my contacts categorized for a main category ("category 1"), then a sub-category ("category 2"). I would like to not only sort but create a temporary, isolated or standalone list, so when creating mailing labels, only those relevant contacts are included. I do not want to just rearrange the whole database because quite a few records are irrelevant for certain lists. The sorted listed would only include A and 1, or A and 2, or A and 3. Or B1, B2, B3.   69. I'm experiencing what seems like a strange bug. I've got a layout that has a tab panel w/ two tabs, and a script that determines which of the tabs to activate, using Go To Object. This works fine. However, the script then continues to manipulate the window somewhat. Through debugging, I've found that the "Show/Hide Text Ruler [Hide]" step is causing the tab panel to revert back to the default tab, in those cases where the other tab had been selected. This happens whether or not the text ruler is actually showing when this script step runs. Is this just an obscure bug? Anyone else seen this?

Following the explanation in FM User's Guide, I created the fp7 within the attached archive file.     Hi, I'm using FMP 8.5 Advanced. Simple question: When I have a multiple layouts with the same perfectly-aligned menu buttons, etc. at the top, and I switch among them in "Browse" mode, the transitions between layouts are completely smooth. There is no "bounce" of objects left-right or up-down. However, when I use the same perfectly-aligned menu buttons (and entire layout for that matter) in a layout that is set to List View only, when I nav to that layout, a vertical white line perhaps 3 to 5 pixels wide appears, from the very top to the very bottom of the layout.     Just wondering, what I am calling dynamic layout. I mean, when you sort records usually for printing purpose we do configure a special layout with fields we would want included. This layout has sub-summary part and also a trailing grand summary, and of course head and footer. Lets supose we have product field named A and category product field named B. It is normal to want reports based on field A and another based on B. Is it possible to have a single layout for both reports?     I have an entry layout with some numeric foreign key fields: Location, Client, Worker. How can I make it easy for users to enter the correct numeric key? Currently, I have value lists showing the key and the text name and drop down menus using those value lists but that isn't completely satisfactory.   76. Hi, I was wondering if this is possible: I have a field for a case number. I want to start the number off with the year and then an incremental number following it. I want to make the case number prefix (the current year) change with each New Year.     So I have searched the forum for answers and still can not find something that works. I have a print layout that contains a header, leading sub-summery, body, trailing sub-summery and footer. There is one row of fields in the body and when printed it should look like a spread sheet. The fields are two lines tall and are set for sliding when printing. I would like to have vertical lines between the fields in the body. I have tried to draw in lines and set the left and right borders but nothing works right. Anyone have any ideas?

  88. We're going to be using IWP as a school report card input, so I was excited about the possibility of using multi-line Tooltips to present grading rubrics, etc., to the teachers doing the input. Unfortunately, it seems that one's choice of browser affects the way the tooltip displays. On Macs, Safari shows multiple lines, Firefox does not, at least from my limited testing.     Hi All, I have two databases, within one is a value list that provides preset timings for the start of a booking in the format 10:00 etc. This just fixes the start of the booking at half hour intervals. When i try and link to this value list from the second database, the link is good but the list has added and extra :00 ( i guess seconds indication) to the value list. ie i now get 10:00:00. I have tried all the different formatting options which only seem to affect the data after you have chosen the relevant option from the value list. I used the LIST function on the related table's records to make a list of all the docs in that table (2). I then used a FilterValues function to compare the related records list to a list in the context table (1). The filterValues function results were not correct.   95. I have a layout in my email address table which has a contact id field and Contact full name that displays based on a lookup. The problem is when I click on the contact id field the drop down lists all of my 100K+ records. I would like to filter this dropdown list since not all of my records have a full name given. I would like to filter only on those records with a full name entered but not sure how. NOTE: The contact id field on the layout is set as a dropdown list and currently get the data from the contactid field in the table.

    I am currently use secure fm on developer 7 to manage what my users can do through the menus and am considering upgrading to 8.5. I have had a little hands-on with 8.5 to see how the custom menu feature works, and it looks like I wouldn't need secure fm on 8.5 for what I do if I upgraded. One thing I didn't remember seeing was whether I could manage what Secure fm calls the 'Sytem Menu'. In particular, I don't want users to be able to 'quit' or 'exit' my software any way but through my 'quit' script (I realize they can always do a 'Force Quit' or 'ctl-alt-delete'.     I have a layout with multiple portals. I allow the user to delete portal rows in one of the portals through a script. The other portals do not have the 'allow deletion of portal records' box checked. When the user clicks the 'delete item' button, a script executes the 'delete portal row' script step. This step will delete the selected portal row no matter which portal has been selected. This can create havoc in the database. How can I be sure the user has selected the correct portal before I execute the 'delete portal row' step?     I'm am trying to find a subtotal from 2-tabbed portals. My SubTotal/Total/Tax/Discount/Shipping fields are in the Transactions table. TransactionDetails_Parts (related to Parts table)and TransactionDetails_Labor (related to Labor table)are related to Transactions by TransactionID. Each tab has a Part/Labor (respectively) portal for line items. Each line items totals properly in the ExtPrice Fields. I need to find the SubTotal for all ExtPrice Fields (parts/labor)to finish up the Transactions layout.
