I'm trying to make a crew list that is first sorted by Department. when I put the Dept. name in a Leading Summary, nothing shows up, and when I put it in a Sub-Summary, it shows up in front of every entry. I just want the Dept. to be listed once in front of the top name. Any ideas?

I have a web viewer configured to view bitmap scans of purchase tickets. Since the bitmap files are named based on the ID field, the file path to the saved file (e.g., c:scans00019.bmp) is easy to calculate. With a script activated with the View button, then, I open a pop-up window with a web viewer for viewing the file. This works well, but if a particular ticket hasn't been scanned, there's no file at the computed path and the web viewer displays an error page. How can I check for the existence of the file before displaying the web viewer? Alternatively, can I trap a web viewer error for a bad URL? OK - this is really puzzling me. I have a field that contains a calculated value - it has to do with student school records. It's a simple text calculation, and it works like so: If (SchoolA not empty), equal to SchoolA, else, If (SchoolB not empty), equal to SchoolB, else, blank result. When I try and have a pull-down index for searching this field via a web page, it obstinately refuses to do anything - the field is locked and allows no input at all, even by hand. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

I have been struggling with FM for a while now, finally have the big things working within the database. I am using a portal to added items to a sales quote. My users now want to be able to add a row to a portal if they need to add an item to the list. The same idea as adding a line in excel. Is this possible? I have a Quotation file, Products file, Line Items file and a Customer file. The customer file has a Price Lookup filed to determine want price the quotation will lookup (10 prices in total). The Quotation layout has a portal showing Line Items. The file works fine except that I have a Calculation field (Unit Price CAL)working filed to look up the Product cost repeating field and displaying correctly. I want to be able to edit this field some times and this cannot be done because it is a calculation field. While we click any button the button color changes to black for the moment the button remains pressed. How can we prevent that or change the 'onclick' color to button color? Actually i want the to suppress the dialog box that appears asking to save(when automatic save is turned off). So i set the button control of the screen to "refresh", but now as i click anywhere the screen momentarily turns black. Is there any other way to supress that dialog? -rksh

I have a tab control with 6 tabs. 1-sheet 1 2-sheet 2 3-sheet 3 """"" """"" Inside each tab i have a container with a picture so in total i can have up to 6 jpegs. So what im trying to do is have a field populate with something like "1 of 6" depending of how many pictures i have in my tabs. So for example is the sales person put 3 Jpegs in Total (utilizing 3 tabs) i want the field to say "1 of 3" in that case everybody know how many pictures we have to a certain record. I've done my best going through documentation and websites, but I can't figure out why portal records disappear after entry. The records in the underlying table do not disappear--they just don't show up in the portal. I have attached the file. The layout in question is "Employees - Form View." Try selecting a project from the drop-down menu in the portal. You can enter data in the other fields, but once you finish, it goes away. You can check that the underlying record still exists by going to the "Assignments" layout. Obviously, I want the records to show up in the portal after I have entered them there. Hi I am trying to create a report that summerizes how many amendments where made on jobs produced in a week. In the Trailing Grand Summary I have a field that I would like to have the count of Unique Job No's. The problem I have is when a job gets ammended it keeps the same Job No so when I do the count it has many duplicates included. Is there a way of summarizing on unique Job No's ?

Hey all, I am called upon occasionally to work with filemaker. Hence my novice status. I have been asked to create a db that tracks students successful completion of standards. This is a school setting and I have a db of all students (stinfo.fp5). Yes, need to work with 5.5 on this. I should be able to search for a group of students and come up with the standards (standards.fp5) based on grade level for a subject area. Hi there, I don't know my way around FileMaker at all, though I've been trying to pick it up. I can't figure out how to do something that seems fairly basic. I want a layout that only shows a particular field (and its label) when that field contains data. If the field is empty (and this is the bit where it maybe gets hard) I want the fields beneath it to move up to fill the space. But if the field is over a line, I want it to resize and push everything else down. Hi all, For some months I've been using two filemakerdatabases to generate html-code. Everything was working fine until the line of code became too long. I use a portal to get the data from another database. Using a valuelist I combined the related portalrows in a textfield. What happens now is that when the line gets too long it gets cutoff in this last step. I have a questionnaire (in FM8) that has about 30 questions in it with each question assigned the same radio button'd value list (named Choice) in the same table (named Audit) "YES" = 3 pts.; "NO" = 1 pt., and "N/A" = 0 pts. I have a disclosure database where pages are displayed as single page tif in a portal, and upon going to the record the first tif is displayed and each subsequent page on going to the next row in the portal. I used to have quicktime installed on my pc and it would display the tif (albeit showing the quicktime image first and being a bit slow). Upon removal of quicktime (which is not standard on our pc's so don't particulary want to install it and the refresh was annoying) the tif's will no longer display in the webviewer. The jpg's do so i know it's not the relationship etc. Instead a message displays in the webviewer "Loading /Images/0001.tif" and upon going …

I have a database that has two tables, the first is an "entry" table for customers. One of the entry fields is a portal listing products purchased. It uses a drop down, self populating menu. Hi Forum, I hope I am posting in the good section. I am a newbie in Filemaker Pro and am I doing my very first database. In the database (people) I have for every record a picture of the person. But people can have several pictures and I would like to be able to choose witch one from the list would be on the first page. Ex: In a data base of models, there is the main record of the model with all the details and here picture. Then there is on an other layout all her pictures. I have two templates. 1 is a purchase order template, the other is a contact management template. Have a database used by Macs and PCs. Students use the database to complete online tests. However, if I use a font such as Arial, the setup on the Macs looks different to that on PC. Consequently, some questions appear "hidden" behind a field. I need a font that will leave my layouts appearing identically on both. In an ideal world, I'd stick with century gothic which is on both machines but gives me the problems mentioned. Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi, I am designing a database for a training company. I keep track of client (big companies), learners (the employers of the big companies), and courses. In the courses layout I have a portal that shows which learners did the specific course. In the clients layout I have a portal that shows what learners are employed by them. Now I want to create a portal in the client layout to show what courses has been done for a company. I created the portal and it works (getting the value through the learners), but it repeats every course, for every employee of theirs that did the course. How do I omit the duplicate values in the portal to show only a list of courses done?

I'm trying to mark or highlight certain records in list view based on a condition in another field? I can't change the text colour because I use the text colour already for something else. I want to make a background behind the text. I started with a global container repeating x2 Then I drew a box the size I wanted to use as the 'highlighting/backdrop" for want of a better description. I have suddenly encountered a problem with a layout in a file that has been very stable (up 'til now). This file has 17 different layouts. When I go into Layout mode I can work with 16 of them just fine. But, when go into the other one, FMP crashes. I have tried a recovered copy, and a backup copy from a week ago, and both do the same. I repaired the disk permissions and closed all other applications, except the finder. HELP!!!

I need to show a daily schedule of resources on a layout. I have a Schedule table, where each record is a unique date. Then I have a Job Ticket table where each record has a unique job ticket number, related to above by date. I have a Schedule Line Items table, where records are related by a calculation of Job# and Date. Then I have a Truck Line Item table, where each record is a unique truck that the warehouse owns. Hi, I have a question about creating a DEMO version of an application with a date expiration. I have read several postings, which state that someone has created a DEMO of their application by using a “Date” expiration. However, I have never seen a posting as to how they accomplished the expiration…I have made many attempts to create a “Date” expiration but have yet to accomplish it. Hi! Sometimes when I put text or field on layout, go to browse mode and back in layout mode, text falls 1px down. Then when I double click in text or field it jumps up, but when I go into browse again it falls down. I happened to me on few layouts...I have to create layout from scratch. Hi Everyone, I've got a question about displaying (and manipulating) related images. I've got a related table that I want to display multiple images for one record. The thing is, I'd like to display six pictures (three rows, two columns). Using the portal doesn't seem very flexible, can it be done with the portal? Or is there another way? I was thinking about having a separate related table for each of the six different kinds of pictures, that way I don't have to use a portal right? Is there a way to extract data from a portal, something as simple as text? e.g. Let's say you have an employee's table and an Orders table. One employee to Many Orders. Now let's say in the employee table you have a portal that shows all of the vendors that the employee has done orders for. I'd like to display the total number of records in a table at the bottom of a layout. I want this count to be of all records in the table, not just the records in the current found set. I'm guessing that I need to use a global field to store this, but not sure how to proceed. Can anyone offer any advice? Basically, the bottom of the the layout should have a label along the lines of "## records in the database." where ## is the total number of records. Thanks!

Hi all, Please could someone help me out with this. TABLE1 has 16 fields. TABLE2 has 9 fields. In the 9 fields in TABLE2 I would like a value list which contains the data in each of the 16 fields in TABLE1. So for example, record 1 will contain a persons name in each of the 16 fields in TABLE1. It also has a key field called serial number. I have a Point of Sale system that I am trying to modify that I made. There are 3 tables Order LineItems Inventory The LineItems is a portal on the POS form. Each product has a custom barcode printed for it. The barcode simply is the product's SKU number. When the SKU is scanned into the SKU field of the portal, it retrieves the ItemName and Price from the INVENTORY table. Is there some way to make it so that the clerk can scan either the custom barcode on the package OR the UPC barcode on the package? All UPCs can be used as primary keys in the system. Here's my dilema - I have two tables - tableOne with fields to populate several value lists, and tableTwo for tracking details that use those value lists for various fields (a little confusing, I hope it makes sense). So I go through records in tableTwo and populate fields using the value lists (from tableOne). I have a report that takes job tasks, rolls those up to a job code level, then summarizes by manager and chief. something like this: Chief -- Manager ---- Job Code Total ------ Task ------ Task ------ Task ---- Job Code Total ------ Task ------ Task -- Manager Total Chief Total For the life of me i cannot figure out how to get the sum of the Job Code costs to calculate on the manager and chief total parts. Hi - I'm trying to create a way for a user to choose a surrogate primary key (serial number) but only see a more descriptive field. FM has the ability to show a value list based on a field, and only show a second variable. However, this seems to only work correctly with popup menus. With a drop down, you see only the second field when you click the field, but when you leave it, you see the actual variable assigned to the field (in this case the surrogate key). This will be confusing to user, but I prefer not to use a popup because it doesn't allow autofill by typing first letters. Any way to do this? Hi, I have a portal that lists in each row different db filename in spec. folder and layout name in that db (all of that coming from another table). I need to have one script that will take that name and open that file only. I am trying to avoid creating scripts for opening each db, bc it might be a lot of them at the end and if I add db to the portal than I'll have to make new script which I don't see practical. Hi all, My problem now is as follows: I have a database up and running that is filled with products (so I can't post it due to privacy issues). My company needs to print out the Specifications of these products in order to send to customers. Hi, I love a good tabbed interface, and I'm trying to build one, but I'm having some problems understanding the nature of how they are supposed to work. When creating my tab set, I'm able to enter the tab titles. Then, I have drug the size of the tab window down to fill the body of my layout. My problem is that when I try to add content to Tab 1, that content is showing up on ALL tabs while in browse mode. In Layout mode, the button/content only appears on Tab 1. Hello, I can't seem to find how to make a link between the results in a portal and a field outside that portal. The portal contains dates from a table. These date are ordered. The newest date is up/the oldest beneith. I want to display 1 (only the most newest) date in a other field not related to the portal. I have a file with student records. Each student has its own information and a parent id. I need to determine how many children are in each family and pritn a report that is sorted by that number. For example Davey Jones might have 5 children in school. Tom Lasorta, 4. Anna Frank, 5. It should come out with a 5 children group displaying Frank and 5 children, and Jones with the 5 children info. BackGround: I have an quote and invoice system to develop, for each quote there are set jobs, from the :Quote table these are saved in :Quote_Details, when creating an invoice they want the ability to select certain jobs from ::Quote_Details - I have the selection working to copy the required fields into a table ::Invoice_Details. ::Invoice is related to ::Quote, and calls ::Invoice_Details via a portal. Hi, I'd like to have a relationship taht only returns the 3 most popular products of each categories of my inventory in a portal. Here is what I was doing lets see if anyone can help. First I created 4 value lists in File 1 (logicFile) Second in File 2 I created 4 values lists using the exact same names as the lists in the other file that pointed to the original lists Third I wanted to add another list in File 1 so I went into the define Value List and selected one that had a similar name to the one I was going to create hit Duplicate and then I lost all my lists Now the value list screen in both files shows blank lines File 1 has 5 lists and file 2 has 4 blank lines where the lists were. I am trying to build a form which uses a field that can self-expand, i.e. is not constrained by set vertical boundaries. For example, if I enter one word into the input field, the resulting field is one line high. If were to I enter a list of items numbered 1-10 or if I enter a long string or paragraph that wraps 10 times, the field adjusts to be 10 lines high. Is this possible in FileMaker?

I downloaded an example database posted to one of my questions and it had the part labels displayed vertically. Many times I have fields that are mostly covered by the horizontal labels which can be annoying. I searched around trying to find a way to change the direction of the labels but I couldn't find anything. Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks js22

There seems to be an undocumented change in the format of what you get when you go to Preview mode and select Copy. - In versions before 7, you would get a VECTOR image that could be zoomed without pixelating (on a Macintosh, that would be PICT format, not sure what the Windows format was). - In version 7, this was changed - copying in Preview mode would get you a BITMAP image at screen resolution. - Having removed v.8, I cannot say what the situation was there, but with 8.5 you get a VECTOR image again, this time in the form of PDF (this is on OS X, where PDF is the native clipoard format - again, I have no idea what happens on Windows). I have a report layout that has a trailing grand summary. I would like to be able to print a footnote in the footer on the same page as the trailing grand summary. Placing the footnote text in the footer causes it to print on every page which is unacceptable for my audience. I've placed it in the trailing grand summary part itself but again my audience did not like this as it is never in the same location. Can anyone help me with this. Thanks!

Hi All. I have a script that checks for all of the field validations when the user tries to exit the record/layout (I have two buttons that allow navigation away from the layout). If any of the validations fail, the user gets a specific error message and the script exits. This works perfectly, except for one issue. I have several portals on the layout and i do not believe that the validation checks against every related record, only the first one. Is it possible to script a check against every related record? I'm experimenting with the 30 day trial version of 8.5, I've created a local html form and loaded it into a webview in my database using file:///path/filename.htm. This works fine, the form contains a java applet which displays fine the user enters data and the applet performs a calculation and fills in a couple of boxes on the form. Is it possible to now use the form to populate fields in the current record in the database (using Get or Post)? I can't find any examples where this has been done.

Heres my situation. My company is dealing with manufacturing. So we have an order, and we assign employee numbers to work on that order. We are using a field as a Checkbox, with a Valuelist that has all the employee numbers. In a 2nd Layout we want to create a report. We would use Find to filter down to a single Employee. and review the orders that employee worked on. We used the same field, except as an edit box to show the data. Now I have 2 problems: 1) the Editbox does not show the Employee Numbers in numeric order. It shows who was clicked first first, and second is second. 2) The edit box shows only the first chosen number. It does not put them…

Hi Xperts. I would like to set up a multilingual solution under fm8 and need to give helpsupport with tooltips in the user language. I try to fill a global field in with the user language, global related to the tooltiptable. Each tooltip has a numeric code. To fill the global in, I use the Event plugin and trigger a script in each tooltip, the numeric value is joined as scriptparameter. I would like to display on a layout the order in which the table is presently sorted. If the sort selection is changed, this field would reflect the new sort order. How can this be done ? I tried with a global field and the Get(sortstate) function but this only tells me if the table is sorted or not (0,1)- doesn't give me the field name. I'm also looking for a method where a user could select the sort fields from a dropdown list (where I would put only a few fields-not all of them), and have the sort run after having done the selection. I did a little research (Google is our friend) and it is entirely possible to dynamically generate content inside a WebViewer object without resorting to HTTP calls or loading local files. In other words, you can create any content you want (even graphics if you know the format) without requiring external files or even a connection to a web server. The key is to use the DATA protocol. I have a script that takes the user to a print preview mode for several reports with user abort [off]. The user needs to select the continue button to scroll through all the reports and exit the script, which takes them to another layout. Is there away to allow the user to cancel the print preview at any time and return to the other layout? if i turn user abort [on] it will allow the user to cancel the script but leaves them on the report layout. thanks for any help.

Each record (person) has also checkbox field based on Value List, where I select some status (Contract signed, Can use company cars... etc.). Then I would like to be able to easy check status off all employees. So I created layout, one line = one person. What I would like to do, is to have all checkboxes for that person in one line. There are a number of fields in our database that are check box style value lists. When clicking the mouse on any one of these check boxes, we get this message: " 'Name of field' is defined to contain only specific values. You must enter a valid value." After you hit okay, it puts an "X" in the check box (as it should). Can someone tell me how to get rid of this unnecessary message? Thank you!

I am a new user and I am using FM Pro 8.5 trial version. I can add and reorder fields in the Define Database dialog but when I OK out of it the first time and then reorder fields a subsequent time, the new order does not show up in any of the views. I can add new fields and change their order within the dialog but the new order does not show up in any views when I OK out of it. I can rename fields but any data associated with a field will remain associated with the original field regardless of the new name so this is not a valid work-around. If I delete a field, it leaves a gaping hole where the field was. This is a serious problem as I have no way of maintaining an exist…

i have 6 tabs, all with many fields in them. In layout view, when I click on a tab, I see only the fields in the tab I've clicked on. In find or browse mode, in contrast, something very different happens. Regardless of which tab I've clicked on, I see all fields in all tabs, and they all overlap with eachother and jumble on top of eachother. What do I need to change so that, in browse and find modes, when I click on a tab, only the fields in that tab are displayed? thanksw!

I've got a database where all the fields have 20 repetitions. This is to set up meetings. Any given person can have up to 20 meetings. However, I may be in meeting #3, Joe may be in meeting #5, and Sandy may be in meeting #1. Regardless of what repetition any record is on, I need it to sort and print by date. How do I set up my layout so that it allows for all repetitions, but only prints a repetition if it has a date in the date field?

I have two (2) questions that I cannot seem to locate any documentation on. 1. How can I do an alphabetical search on pop-up menu within a portal? For example, I want to see only the names of customers that start with a particular letter and not the entire customer list so I have to scroll through 300 names. 2. Is there a way to display the results of a calculation field in the [color:red]current layout, without the same result being show in each portal row? I need to be able to see the result of a particular calculation for each customer in each portal row.

my boss (being a designer) is demanding that a portal in the database swaps the axis. (i swapped them from the original design). ive got values across the top and people (who entered them) down the side. my boss wants the values down the side and ppl across the top. new data would then be added to a new column on the right. since i cant seem to simply rotate the portal is there another way?

I have been searching for a method to let my users alphabetically sort a value list. Finally It occured to me ! You can creat a field and have the field be set to the value of ValueListItems ( fileName ; valueList ) of that value list and then use that field's content as a value list. Or an easier way is to set up a table and have only one record in that table, and keep a field for every Value list. Then make valuelists using the content of the new table's fields which will be automatically sorted. I hope this helps. Xoomaster.
