  1. Peer To Peer Sharing · Started by JamesBenzal,

First time poster longtime Fmpro user. I have been using Fmpro 5.5 now for many years. I have had no need to upgrade. Software and data on stand alone system running XP. I would like to know if I can remotely access my data from a laptop running Vista. If yes, how do I set this up or where can I go to read up on setting this up. thanks in advance.

  2. I have an extensive db developed that has about 10-20 users on regular basis. Each user has a copy of FMP9 and accesses it via network and FMSAdvanced 9. I want to add limited access to the db for customers to enter orders themsleves via a touchscreen kiosk. Is this possible? When I use the developer utility in FMA9 to set the db for kiosk mode - will that exclude future changes to the database? Will the current users still be able to access it as normal? This db - like most - is in constant development and improvement.

  3. I am having problems with my database served on fm server 8 I have a main file with 1,600,000 records. It keeps losing records. I`m not sure if the problem is with fm server so I am trying to find out what version of fm8 server I have. I would like to install the latest version

  5. I'm moving our Filemaker 5.5 server to a new PC and have found certain databases that I do not wish to share. Is there a way to prevent certain database files from being shared? Thanks

  6. Some modern programming environments support concurrent development. That is, two or more programmers access a set of files from a server and work simultaneously to modify the code. I'm not talking about doing development work while end users are active. Is this possible in the current release of FMP? If so, what's involved? Kind regards,

  8. Hello, What should the stripe size be set to for optimal performance with Filemaker Server 9 on a three disk RAID 5 array? Our hardware: 4 x 36GB SCSI hard-drives with 3 in the array and a hot spare Adaptec 3210s RAID controller Thanks,

  9. We're currently running FM Server 5.5/FM Pro 6.0 on our Windows network, Server 2003 on the servers, XP SP3 on the workstations. I'm planning on Migrating to FM Server 9/FM Pro 9 on the same domain. I would like to have FM Server installed and tested before we switch over to live data from the Server 5.5/client 6.0 installation we currently have. Doing this would require that Server 5.5 and Server 9 run simultaneously on the same domain (although hopefully on different servers) at least for the testing period, which should be a week or less. Are there any issues I should be aware of (assuming the above is even possible) prior to rolling out Server 9? I assume th…

  10. I'm an admitted noobe trying to get my head wrapped around FileMaker Server. Here's the issue: We have FileMaker Server 9 running on a G5 on the network. The rest of the machines on the network run a mix of FM Pro versions. Accessing the databases through the server while on the network is fine. No problems. Patrick How do I go about accessing the databases from OUTSIDE the network? I'm the administrator by default and don't really have a LOT of network experience. Unfortunately this is a somewhat pressing issue and I'd really appreciate some guidance on this.

  11. I have a single database that I want to share with a colleague. I use FM 9 Advanced to create databases and will soon add FM Server 9 to my Mac OS X Server to share the databases over the local network. As I understand, FM Server 9 doesn't allow you to do instant web publishing. My question, can I set up the one database to share the one database with FM 9 Advanced and share the rest of the databases to the network with FM Server.

  12. Hi all, I have the following problem with File Maker Server 9.03: when I go to my web publishing site in the browser I can see my database, but when I want to open it by clicking on it I get the message "Database not available!" I can open the same database through FileMakerPro and in the administration of FMS everything seems to be OK. The mainboard of my MacBookPro has just been exchanged because of a problem - maybe it has to do something with a connection between the internal computer address or something? Befor it worked liek a charme. Thanks in advance for your help.

  13. I'm trying to establish https on a Mac with FMP Server 8 Advanced to serve web page via XSLT. The certificates have been created (by someone else) and I updated the httpd.conf file to listen on both port 80 and 443. I also enabled the Secure Connection on FMP Server Configuration. When I look at localhost on the machine with either http or https, I can make the connection, but when I try the registered name of the server, only http works. The message I get is that the browser couldn't establish a secure connection to the server. Ports 80 and 443 are both open. Please point me in a direction to go next!! Thanks.

  14. I have a small system. FM Server 9 (9.0.3.326) running on one machine sharing 20 .fp7 files. If I run FM 7 on this machine and select "Open Remote" using the "Local Hosts" from the pull-down, the server (name STPI) shows up fine and I can see the files. If I go to another machine running FM 7 and select "Open Remote" using the "Local Hosts" from the pull-down, the server does not even show up. Server is running 10.5.5 and other client is running 10.4.11. Both clients are 7.0v3 and are on the same subnet. If I manually type in the IP address of the server, I can see it, but, I'm trying to get this to work by just using the "Name" that I defined in the server…

This week we are upgrading our FM server version from version 8 to version 9. I am just wondering if there are any problems we should be aware of regarding this change. Our client machines use an array of versions from 7-9 will this cause any problems? Also is there anything I should be aware of with regards to the new version?

  16. I'm having a problem with a new machine on my network connecting to my FileMaker Server. It sees the server under "Local Hosts" but it doesn't see any files that are shared on that server. I don't know what I'm missing. The server is set to "List all databases." I've setup client accounts for this user on the databases that I want them to get into. This is so strange. I have eighteen other computers here that connect to the databases just fine. I appreciate any thoughts any of you have about this. We are all running Macs with OS 10.5.5 and FileMaker Pro 9.0v3. Thanks. Rick

Randomly, FM Pro on a client machine will quit. Upon relaunch the user will get a License conflict. now this has happened before and we had to restart the machine to fix it. That no lnoger works. I have to close all of the DB's and then reopen them. trying to disconnect the just crashed client from FMServer does nothing. I cannot even send a message. Anyone else having similar problems or does anyone have a solution? Thanks

I've taken the sample Autoupdate file and am trying to use this to update the clients, but I've not yet gotten it to work. As I'm tracking down what is going wrong I come across the fact that the external function YourPlugin_Version (referenced in the fm8_autoupdate pdf) does not exist...why on earth? 19. OK I have a FMS 7 serving around 20 FMP 8 clients. I have amended/ added a number of files on FMP 9A and added them to the server, one using the dacons mail-it plugin. On trying to access these files via FMP 9A I get the response "This action cannot be performed because this file is not modifiable" The files have network sharing on, and Network access to file is set to all users so why are they not modifiable???....don't think Im being totally dim, but its a possibility!

  20. I'm running filemaker server 9v3 on mac os x 10.4.11. I have clients running both OS X (regular) 10.5.4, and OS X Server 10.5.4. I just upgraded these clients to 10.5.5, and to FileMaker Advanced 9v3. After this upgrade, one of my clients (the one running OS X Server 10.5.5) can still see the Filemaker Server (e.g. it shows up in the "Hosts" list when you choose "open remote") but it can no longer see any databases to open (e.g. the "Available FIles" list is blank). Another machine running OS X 10.5.5 (normal) plugged into the same network on the same subnet can access the files just fine. I thought perhaps it was a firewall issue, but turning off firewa…

  21. Our office runs Filemaker Server 9 to which appox. 10 Filemaker Pro 9 clients connect. I spend that last few months developing the database on my computer using Filemaker Pro Advanced 9. After testing, I moved the database to the server about two weeks ago and it has been in use since. To create a new record, the user runs a script that opens a window above the list of all records. Once they enter all the data, they run another script that validates the information, set up some relationship, and then closes the data input window. Today, a user followed this procedure to create a new record. However, when she viewed the new record, all of the data that she en…

  22. Greetings all, this is my first post. I work for an Apple dealer in Philly and we have a client for whom we recently installed a pair of Sonicwall Firewalls to provide a VPN Tunnel between 2 remote offices. There are 14 databases (all under 20MB) that are opened and used, Opening the DBs on the internal network where the server resides takes about 15 seconds.. yet over the…

  27. FileMaker Server v7 - v11 · Started by David Jondreau,

OK, this is really odd. My MBP recently went in for service and I deauthorized by FM9A and installed it and activated it on my home iMac (OSX 10.5.4, FMA 9.0v3). Firewall set to allow "All incoming connections." I maintain several solutions hosted by a 3rd party hoster who has them on a couple different servers. I am unable to access two of those servers at all. As a Favorite host, when I select that server, nothing shows up, when usually all the files do (including my own). Other users (my clients) can see the files, just not me. Customer service at the hosting company has been great, but ultimately unhelpful. The host maintains a handful of ser…

  28. I guess I'm not alone on this, but the java applet used to administer our FM9 Server has just stopped working. I have tried going to local ip:16000 in an attempt to jump start a new java download but it does nothing. When I tried to use the old file it would bring up a status screen and would never get past a part where it said it was "checking for updates" I let it try for several hours but no luck. I have searched on this topic for several weeks now off and on with not much luck. I have read many posts not only on this forum, but on many others that this was a reoccurring issue, but there never seamed to be a solution other than to reinstall the server software. I…

  29. Hi All, We have FMSA7 running on a mac and this server hosts many databases. Suddenly, when we tried to login into the FileMaker Server Admin and when we were prompted to enter the password, the application was not accepting the password. But we feel that the password is correct. All the databases are still being served but we are unable to launch the FileMaker Server Admin application. We went to the unix shell and tried to execute the fmsadmin -v command and we were asked to enter the password. At the command level, the password was accepted and all the server info was displayed. Has anyone encountered a similar problem and how did you resolve this situation. A…

  30. Hey everyone -- I did a little bit of searching around both fmforums as well as the internet at large, but didn't see anything related to this specific issue, so I thought I would start a thread here. My organization runs FM9 Server Advanced 9.0.3.326 (latest version to the best of my knowledge) on OSX 10.5.4 (1 rev behind) quad core Intel Xeon processor. The server was purchased this year, so I am not yet willing to consider that this is a hardware issue. Today, I received notification that the server was inaccessible. I launched the Admin Console and noticed that the console couldn't connect to the DB server. I attempted to manually connect without suc…

  31. Should the OpenURL script step actually work in a server side script? I created a script to launch a web page but anytime the script is run as a schedule, it fails with error 4. If I run it manually, it works fine (yes, I'm using the same account). I do have the "Perform without dialog" checkbox turned on. I also tried using web viewer to accomplish the same thing (with a Set Web Viewer script step), but that gives me error -1. My reasons for doing this is to run a php script once a day. Since the server is a Windows box I can't use AppleScript, and I don't have a clue how to write an external script in Windows to simply go to an URL. Anyone have any help/i…

  35. I upgraded a FileMaker Server Advanced from 8 to 9 last week without difficulty. Today, I'm not able to access the admin console remotely or locally on the server. If I try to run the previously downloaded Java applet, it starts but doesn't do anything. Netstat and ipfw show that the connection is being made on port 16000. 36. I'm not sure this is the correct place for this post, but here goes. I have been having a great number of issues when a file hosted by FP Server Advanced 8v4 is crashing on a particular client's machine (Windows XP2). This client - using FP9v3 - usually runs a large number of databases on his machine over various applications and has a consistent problem of his FP files crashing at different times (e.g. sometimes when only FP9 is open; other times when moving between applications). In particular it seems to happen when running scripts to view different layouts (e.g. arriving on a different layout causes the page to partially draw and will bring up the message: …

  38. This seems to be a repeating topic on these forums. Here is my scenario. Fresh Install of OSX Server 10.4.11 on an Xserve with no connection to the internet. Install Filemaker server 9. I get in, can configure things, looks good. I setup everything for using server, doing backups, etc. then quit admin console. Attempt to launch again, and it sits at the screen saying "checking for latest version" and never goes beyond that. I distinctly made it a point to confirm that the "allow server to check for updates" checkbox was unchecked. Are there any suggestions for geting this to work? I have wiped the server and reinstalled everything, only to get the same symptom. …

  40. I apologize if this has been covered before. I didn't find a thread like it, so please provide a link if available. I was recently tasked with helping a small office migrate their FileMaker Server 5.5 installation to a new machine. The old server is running Server 2003 Standard Edition (SP1) 192.168.1.3. Internal DNS was handled by the broadband router and there's no name suffix published to all DHCP clients. A new server was acquired, Server 2003 SP1 installed, patched, promoted as a DC (in the event they wish to use an AD-based network later on), and made to function as the office's new DNS (configured to use the ISP's DNS as the forwarder). We are disappointed with response times. When I go into Task manager, Perf Mon, I can see 4 windows monitoring the processor. First three windows practically no activity. Fourth window : pretty frantic. Zigzagging between 60% and 80%. Is this Good? Bad? Normal? Unfortunate? If it's bad, or unfortunate, is there anything I can do in FMS or in Windows to get it better ? On all previos versions we installed the server to an alternate hard drive using the INSTALLDIR= option in the appropriate file (setup.ini in the case of server 9). When installing Server 9 (or advanced) to any drive other than C, after setup completes (and on all future attempt at launching the FMS 9 Start Page ([install drive:installdir]Adminadmin-serverlaunch-pageprelaunch_single_en.html) to complete the installation, it never gets past the "Please wait while the Admin Server starts..." screen. 43. I have read many many posts regarding Admin Console's flakiness when trying to properly administer a Mac server running FMSA9 advanced. The only way I have managed to get it to work properly is by re-installing FMSA on the server every time Admin Console starts to misbehave. Today I had a power failure and my Mac server re-started itself. All FM files being served OK via IWP. But, once again, Admin Console now tells me that the DB server isn't running (when it is!), so I can't use it to do very much. Proper Shutdowns and managed Restarts etc on the server don't help. I haven't re-installed FMSA but once again it looks as 'though I will have to (for the n'th time!). I'…

  45. I'm in the process of setting up a FileMaker Server v9. (At this point it is a trial, but will be converted to a "real" one in a week or two.) However, I have run into what looks like a bug with the Upload Database Assistant. I try to go through the assistant, but when I select a database to upload (or simply create a subfolder), the "Next" button is always grayed out. (So, I can't get to the next step.) I've been able to work around this problem by manually creating the folders, and copying the databases to the server, but this seems like a pretty basic thing to not work. Any ideas?

  48. Hi all, One of my clients wants to move up from the Mac Mini they're using as a dedicated FMS box. My question is, which is the best Mac machine they can buy to boost their server's speed? Specifically, will FMS benefit from two chips as opposed to just one? We are planning to purchase the Mac Pro tower, with two 3.0GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon chips. Just want to know if buying the two-chip setup is indeed significantly better than just getting the one chip -- and upping the RAM instead. All ideas, advice, vastly appreciated.

  49. (I couldn't find an answer to my question after perusing the threads in this forum so I apologize if this question has been answered already and I missed it.) Howdy, all: I'm biting the bullet and have purchased FM 9.0x Server and FM Web School's FM Studio, and am now gathering opinions as to which Microsoft Server 2008 flavor should I purchase to use with them: Standard or Web? As an FM Pro developer, I want to be best able to assist my customers when installing and using my solution, so I'm leaning a little bit toward the Standard Edition. However, since the solution will be accessed via the Web in many cases then maybe the Web version will do? *puzzled l…

Hi all, my server is behing a airport extreme router, Port forwarding is all done, DBs are hosted no problem, everything works so far but one thing, when opening the server admin console (hosted at home for test purposes)from the office, In the admin console, if i click on any question mark symbol to get help, the web page fetched is the local Ip of the server(10.0.1.xxx)instead of using the Httpd domain name. it looks like if the Java APP only gets the current ip instead of the httpd.conf domain name any idea? would a vhost solve this? 54. I currently have a script that involves finding some records, saving as a pdf file then emailing it. I am running this script via a schedule on FMS9 . The only script line that is not server friendly is 'save as PDF (no dialog)' which is a shame as I have to use a plugin to trigger the script on a client PC (which does work but is a little clunky and temporarily disrupts work on the clients pc while the script is running) I could understand it not working if I was not ticking 'perform without dialog' option. Does anyone know if there is a plugin that would run on the server that can save a pdf file. Thanks

I know some of you have opinions/thoughts on the kinds of machines that FMS9 should be running on. The organization I work for is deciding between using a macmini or an xserve. I'm aware that some of you will say "get an xserve...what is your data worth" while others will say "a mac mini has worked fine for us". I'd like to hear from both of you, and would love to know the reasons why a macmini isn't the way to go. there's 6-12 people in this organization. has someone written an article on this anywhere?

When we went to open the back up versions we noticed the dates were a couple of months old and when we tried opening the files we get the error message "Error occurred unable to open file". The files are set to multi-user and we were able to open them locally. We have tried a recovered version and a copy of version and the same thing occurs.

  59. We've created a database that is shared via the Filemaker IWP (I assume thats the web browser interface) -- but it requires a username/password to access it. We'd really like to set it up so anyone can view it without having to enter a password. Where are the options to enter/edit usernames and passwords for filemaker? Also, bizarrely, the database requires a username & password to open it remotley ... none of our other databases do! Any clues or links to the documentation about user access controls with sharing?

  61. Hi everyone, Our server machine lost connectivity (FMS9). It was re connected and re booted. Since then, the admin console will not launch. When the shortcut icon is clicked, it will show the launch screen initially and then it goes away and nothing. No error, just nothing. I tried opening IE and typing http:the ip :16000 and it freezes. This happens on the host machine as well as any remote pc I try. What could possibly be causing this? Thanks

  62. WPE was working fine until a power outage killed the server unexpectedly. After restarting, the database server works fine, but WPE acts as if it is starting, then after a few minutes dies. Running the server deployment picks up that IIS is installed, but fails on the last step of configuring with the .jpg error message attached. I've checked the Windows Logs but they don't contain any WPE errors. I've double checked enabled anonymous access in IIS with the user account IUSR_FRANSCORPSERVER. I have restarted IIS services, and cleared the Java cache but to no avail. I can see the default IIS web page from all computers on my network so I think IIS is working fine. I've att…

  63. Hi All, I am new here to the forum as well as administering a filemaker server. My company is running a filemaker 8.0V4 server that hosts a dozen or so databases. Recently we remotes started recieveing and error that says host capacity exceeded. FM Server is set to 250 connections; at most, I get 45 clients connected in at any one time. Users who are connected in can continue to work with no issue; users trying to connect in can not. At the moment the only fix is a reboot. In the application log, i get a generic slsocket54 error quite a bit. The socket error occurs regularly, even when users can connect in. Has any one seen this?? With that for the mom…

  64. Hello Thanks for taking a look at this post. I have recently began using Filemaker Pro 9 and have already been able to remotely access my file through a network (I have a office with two computers). All help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance :

What about just putting the FM database file on the server and opening it from any workstation with FM installed? I don't know to what extend this is true and how risky/safe it is to modify a db while in use; I would like the opinion of the experts. Thanks

We had a demo recently by a rep from WorldSync of their product SyncDek. I think it is a pretty cool tool that we may have more uses for than we thought. What I am curious about is if there are any other tools out there that have the same functionality? As of right now, we would only be syncing two(or more) filemaker databases. I did a search, and WorldSync is the only one that comes up. Not that there is anything against WorldSync, but if we are going to spend that kind of money, we would like to be as well informed as we possibly can about all the options. Thanks in Advance. ~Mark

  74. I am trying to get a filemaker script step to work correctly as part of a filemaker schedule. The script step is set web viewer [go to URL...] The url being used 'activate' a RSS service outside of filemaker. This script step is web-compatible and thus is able, in theory, to be run as part of a server schedule activated script. The script works as a standalone script within a filemaker client. Because the schedule runs as a session on the server I tested the URL by pasting it into a browser on the server. This worked. So there is no blocking of the URL on the server either. Is this script step really compatible with filemaker server schedules? Any help…

  76. Hey there, I'm beginning the planning phase of my second FileMaker project. The database will be very easy to implement, because it's mainly a address-book, but the question is, how to set up and what to buy regarding licensing and serving and stuff: We have about eight clients involved, at least two of them need to be able to edit the database. The other clients just need to browse and search. Obviously the first possibility is to run an FM Server and FM Pro on every machine. Is there a cheaper possibility, like, having two FM Pros for the editing-clients, and a web-interface on the server where the other clients can access the data read-only? …

The question is I want that script to run automatically by itself at night, so I want to store the exported file on the same server where FMS is running. I don't know how to specify the export path. If I specify the same as the database containing the script I get the following error: "filename.fp7" could not be created on this disk. Use a different name, make more room on the disk, unlock it or use a different disk. I just have been able to export into the client machine... Btw: I am in a Windows XP pro LAN. Any idea? 78. Just upgraded a server (G5, 4G Ram) to Leopard. Was running FM Server 7.0 in OSX 10.4 just fine (only about 10 files). After installing Leopard and when trying to open FM server to administer the files, got the message "Connection Failure" - Could not connect to FileMaker Server (localhost)" (127.0.0.1). Only option is "OK" and then it closes FM Server. Upgraded FM Server to 8.0.2 and got the same error. Still can't host the files in FM Server as a result. Is Leopard incompatible with versions prior to Server 9, or is there some network setting that may have been reset during Leopard install? Help, please!

  80. In FMP9 is there a way for an administrator to create accounts with passwords and have these pushed to all computers on an FMP Server network? And can we script this so we can provide the administrator with our own interface and record the accounts and passwords in a table located on the server? Yes, I recognize there is a potential security hazard in doing so. However the downside is minimal and reasonable if access to the server room is sufficiently limited (as it should be in any case). The upside is considerable; we can script our own more powerful privilege system than FMP provides natively. With such a system we can provide administrators the option to make ch…

  83. Hi FM Forums, first post here... be gentle I'm using FM Server 8 on a XP Pro box and serving a data base (.fm7) from it. I need to get FM Server to close the database at a predetermined time and then open it again after an hour. Would I have to write 2x scripts for this (one to close the DB and one to open it again) and use the task schedular in FM Server to run them after one another or is there another way of doing this? I'm clueless as how to go about writing these scripts if that is the only way to do it. So any examples (or links to) will be much appreciated.

  84. The prime rules of backups are "1. make them, and 2. test them out". Well, in doing this, I realized today that one of my filemaker files (hosted on FMSA8) is corrupt -- when I try to open one of the daily backup files locally, I get the dreaded "The access privileges have been damaged or possibly tampered with" message. If I go back to the original file which is hosted on FMSA8, and open Accounts & Privileges, it opens up fine, but I notice that one of my accounts is blank, and I can't edit or delete it. Drat, this looks like real corruption. If I'm lucky it's only corruption of the Accounts data, not the entire file. So here's the trick -- the …

I have both plugged into my switch and both are configured manually (i.e. two static IP addresses). We have saved and compacted on an irregular basis in the past to re-establish the backups to a verifying state (irregular being anywhere from two weeks to three days). I'm starting to see a reduction in time between db's failing verification -- currently once a day (12:00 passes, 4:30 fails, then I save and compact). Is this the sign of a corrupted file/database? or some other process/failure? What steps should I be taking to rectify this? I realize that may be a wide-ranging question, any input is appreciated. I then went back to the original version of Apache and even though Apache starts, I can no longer serve on my localhost. I can't even get to localhost/fmi/config. I obviously broke something, but have no clue where to look (I checked the web, but to no avail). Any help would be appreciated!!! I am at a standstill with testing any of my systems right now.

Users have the choice of a faster search against last night's index vs. a (frequently painfully) slower search against live data. I've run into a problem when the data is located in an external source. When the script is run by FMS the result for data from an external source is a blank field, but when I run the script via either IWP or the PHP API it will grab and set the appropriate data as long as the external source is on the same Filemaker server (even if the external source is an ODBC link to a MySQL table).
