Quite recently I heard that FMS 5.5 on a computer with multiple processors/dual core/hyperthreading might be a bad idea. That this might cause unknown/weird problems. Is this a known fact? Why would it cause a problem if that is so? I personally have never run into any trouble that I could relate to such hardware with FMS 5.5, but I would appreciate any answer related to this. Thanks!

I'm trying to get FileMaker Server 8.0v4, under OS X 10.4.9, to do backups of my database files to a mounted, encrypted disk image. It seems like everything is set up properly, but I'm not getting it to recognize the backup folder as a valid path. Here's what I've done: 1. created an encrypted disk image 2. mounted the image 3. unchecked "ignore permissions on this volume" (get info on the disk image drive icon) 4. set the entire backup path's permissions to be read+write by group fmsadmin. 5. Entered the correct path in the backup schedule (tried both filemac:/diskName/foldername, and filemac:/Volumes/diskName/foldername ) 6. un-mounted and re-mounted …

I have just posted a new data base using Filemaker server Advanced 8 and I am using the web publishing option. I set up the accounts and priviledges so that when people login they will have to change their password (I checked the box). If I use the data base on my computer it works fine, it walks me throught the password change process. But I want this to work when people hit the database from the web. Right now when they hit the site it pops up that the password has expired. If I leave the change password on login box unchecked a person can log right in. Is this option not available from the web or am I missing somthing? Please send help.

I have installed FMS 8 on a dedicated PC running Windows server 2003 SP2. I can see the sample file and can open it on the remote computer but cannot see or open any other database files. I have put the files in the correct folder and I think they are configured correctly. When I open SAT Remotely, the files show up and all show as normal except the most important one which shows closed and cannot be set to normal. Any Ideas? Thanks in advance.

Just a questions as to how long you should wait before "force quitting" a FileMaker Server. I have FileMaker Server 5.5 running on a Mac and I have issued the "Stop Server" command but it is still stating - "FileMaker Server is stopping...This may take several minutes". This has been going on for about 1.5 hours. Should I wait or just "force quit"? Before issuing the stop server command I logged into the admin interface and there were no open connections to any databases? Is there somewhere else I need to check for database activity? Any help would be greatly appericiated. Thanks

I was wondering if anyone has any idea how I might be able to create a user account management form. The idea is that I want to create a form for a supervisor to use to add/delete user accounts. I know I can use the built in script steps to create/delete/enable/disable accounts, but is there a way to get a list of all the users accounts?

I recently read about how its bad practice to have FMS autostart on restart or login. Two questions to follow this up if I may... 1) How do I stop a FileMaker Server from doing so if I set it up to do so initially, as I can't find this in the FMS preferences or settings. 2) Where can I read more about this or the post? or could someone explain why its bad practice to do so. Thanks

Hi We are running FMS7.04 on an OSX 10.3.9 server with a dual IP address, so that we can access databases from the 2 networks that we we are using. We are a dual platform school running OSX 10.3.9 and Windows XP on the clients. When we go to open a remote file from the Macs it gives us the correct IP address for the server in the 'Hosts' window, however on the pc's it gives us the IP address of the other subnet, and we cannot access the files. I know that I can add the sever with the correct IP address to my favorites, but we have approx 1200 pupils who will need to do this, and I want to make it as simple as possible. Is there any way that I can set the default …

As part of my master's thesis in archaeology I developed a database that holds the information of several excavations in a given site, linking the graphic information (pictures, floorplans, etc) with the written information (publications, notes, etc) and the results of the analysis. I got to a point where I need to share this database with other users, so forth I set up a small network and turn up sharing... then I realize that all the graphic information is not showing in any of the clients (just 1 for now). In another post someone pointed out that maybe I didn't store things using a "network path". True, my bad. How can I do this though? it seems I have to start from sc…

Our product works fine in client server mode until the number of records grows. The core of our application uses 3 Filemaker files; Contacts, Units and Deals. A Deal brings together a Contact and a Unit. There are fairly complex scripts involved, there is some sorting, some finding and on the Contacts and Unit detail screens each has a portal with a list of Contacts and Units, respectively. The numbers of records are rally not that large. For example: Units 6,600 Contacts 7,607 Deals 6432 There are delays transitioning under script control from: Deal to Contacts 6.5 seconds Contact to Deal 4 seconds Deal to Unit 5 seconds …

I'm trying to backup databases that are hosting data over the web. There is a database that has scripting of some sort involved to grant multiple users access to their record only over the web in a system not running server (I think it runs using FMP tasks 2.0?). Obviously I did not set this system up. The problem is that when a database is open, it cannot be reliably backed up (ie, with Retrospect server). I also have a server running FMP Server 7 (soon to be 8 and then 9). With databases hosted in this fashion, server writes a copy on the fly which allows for reliable backup. There are two solutions I can think of, but don't know which would be easier/better. One…

Hi there, I have just been trying to set up FMSA 8 on a Windows 2003 server using Apache. When trying to open http://localhost/fmi/config I get "Service temporarily unavailable" with an 503 HTTP error. I can't (and don't want to) set up FMSA on this machine using IIS because the server is a virtual private server running at a reseller's location with multiple virtual hosts installed by default with IIS. It took me quite a few hours to get the installing routine of FMSA start running by twirking several virtual directories of IIS. I set up Apache according to FMWebSchool's step by step howto. The FM Web connector error log (web_server_module_log.txt) sa…

Ok, I followed the advice of previous post to re-design my database. This time I put all the images in a different Filemaker file with the pictures embedded on it, store it on a shared drive that can be accessed by everyone, and then relate the two files (Photo.fm7 with Data.fm7) with a foreign key. First test was flawless I could see the pictures in both computers. I thought I finally figured it out. But now, that I re-made my whole database I run into problems again. This time, when I want to see the pictures I get the message "Photo.fm7 could not be found", which is weird since Data.fm7 is working fine in the host computer. When I point out the location of "Photo.fm7" …

Hi, I am currently running FMSA 8v4 on one machine with OS X 10.4.8 on a Dual 1.8 GHz G5 with 2GB of RAM, but I am going to be adding some other services to my lab and will be adding a second machine to do some file serving, and running an Open Directory server for win and mac clients as well as for authenticating FM accounts in some databases. I'm looking for advice on the best way to distribute services across these two machines. I know that I should not use the database server for file serving, so those will be kept separate, but I'm wondering how to best balance the load on the two machines without lengthy trial and error testing. Hi I hope someone will be able to help me with this noob question. I have FMSA installed on a windows install running IIS and am trying to share a database over the web. So far I can get the database to show via IWP on my LAN but can't figure how to do so over the net. I have converted a number of FM databases from FM6 to FM8.5. The converted databases are all copied to the Databases folder of FM Server. When I start FM 8.5 and choose Open Remote I can see all the datases except for one. The ony way to open this database is choose File-Open. When I do this and check under Edit-Sharing-Filemaker Network the box Don't display ... is not ticked. Strange thing is that in the Currently Open Files box the name of the database I just opened is displayed while with the other databases this box is empty. I think this might have something to do with this problem. Anyone an idea?

;) Hi, I'm an archaeologist working for the first time with FileMaker on my ongoing masters thesis. I was always looking for a way to truly share information between different computers since the ammount of data we have to organize is so big its impossible for one person to handle. So, I'm hosting my database with Filemaker Pro 7 and i have a client on another computer using FM Pro 8. Both can see the text and work in both computers and so far sharing seems fine but the graphics, pictures, buttons and other graphic content just appear as "missing" in my client computer. I know this topic comes up a lot. I've read a lot of the posts here on this forum, and still not found an answer to my concerns. The problem in brief: FMS8 performance seems to be lacking. If I open a solution locally on a G3 700MHz machine with 640MB of RAM, it runs a lot faster (400%) than if I open the solution using a remote client on a G5 Dual 2.5GHz connecting over 100MBit LAN to a G5 Dual 2.5GHz FSA server with 4GB RAM. The facts: The TOTAL size of the solution, all files and records, is 12MB. FSA version is 8.0v4. Client is 8.0v3 FSA server cache is set to 128MB. SAT indicates that Cache hit is 100%. Worst cache hit ever (over several days…

I have purchased from my ex-employer all their FM software. It was originally purchased as v7 for which all the keys have been provided. Then v8 was shipped out to them, but they seem to have lost the v8 keys. I have tried installing FMSA v8 from the original CD using the FMSA v7 key, but it reports an invalid key error. We have FMS8A on a dedicated duo core server. We are experiencing performance issues where all queries (via CWP and FMS8 clients) are slowed up to 20 seconds, simultaneously. On the actual client, just about any action will pause with the infamous coffee cup. A user could be clicking in a field to start data entry, or closing a file, or opening a file, or running a query, starting a new record, etc. I feared this was due to load (we often have 15 clients up with 20 files open each in addition to a handful of CWP users). I also thought it might be due to old databases that have been converted several times over the years (originally developed in FM3) with ma…

Hello and I apologize in advance if this question has been answered elsewhere. I recently switched my database to be hosted by Filemaker Server. I now connect to it from FM PRO 8. I used to backup the database by choosing "save a copy", however this function became "grayed out" once I switched. I set the configuration is FM Server to back the database up to an internal harddrive, but it will not create the files. I would like to have scheduled backups to the harddrive as well as to a FTP site. Any suggestions or help welcomed. Thank you.

I'm using FileMaker 7 Pro on a Mac, two Macs to be specific. I can open a database, named "Jobs" on the host computer just fine. I can open "Jobs" on a remote computer as the host (as the only one opening the database). If either computer attempts to open "Jobs" when the other computer has "Jobs" open already I get a "file not found" error. Network sharing is enabled and both users have full access priveledges. Thanks in advance for any help! Dave.

This is probably a commonly asked question, but I can't seem to find the answer to it. In the olden days, if you wanted to hide a file from the Open Remote Dialog box, you'd set the file as Multi-User (Hidden). It appears, now, that there's a checkbox in the Sharing -> FileMaker Network that says "Don't display in Open Remote Dialog." However, on files shared over Filemaker Server, that option is grayed out, presumably because that only lists files I have open locally. I can't seem to find an equivalent option in the server options, though I'm sure it must exist somewhere. Help?

Hi, I would like to know if it is possible to restrict access to fmxml resources with the IWP of FMSA7 on Mac, to, by example, a range of IP address. I was thinking of making an .htaccess file, but it seems that fmxml resources are embedded in jakarta tomcat or something like that, I don't know what to do. And on the other hand, I don't want to block access to all the webserver because I still want to share some fmxslt resources over the internet. Any ideas would be appreciated ! Frank

I have 2 databases on FM Server, and recently added a 3rd. I cannot seem to access the new database remotely using FM 8.5. The other 2 show up, but the new one doesn't. The new database is running, I restarted fm server, and I restarted the actual server. I still cannot access it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a file that works perfectly locally. As soon as I get it on the server (FS8) one script stops working. The problem: The entire script works fine except for the create a "new record" step. It performs all steps and goes to TABLE2 but then it won't create a new record! If I run it locally, no problems whatsoever. Computing, new records, etc---no problem locally. So I have no clue why the heck it's doing this on the server. I thought maybe a privilege set problem, but I doubt it... ALL of my privilege sets include this: Access via FileMaker Network (fmapp) Records: Create and Edit in ALL tables. All other databases work perfectly fine. Ju…

I've been pulling my hair out for weeks over this one and I'm hoping that someone might offer some insight as to what the problem is. I'm running FMS 8 on a Mac G4 (DP 1GHz) with OS 10.4 Server. I'm also running Retrospect Workgroup 6.1 for client and server backups. Please note that I an NOT using Retrospect to backup FM files that are being served, as FM Server does that. A few weeks ago I started getting peculiar and intermittent behavior on the server when Retrospect does its nightly client backups. I get error 519 (network communication failed) when backing up client machines. After the "failure" the server displays some very odd behavior, as follows: …

So I've figured out how to setup, and share files on a network. It was actually easier than I thought. Now I'm wondering, is there anyway to let the base computer which is the host, run, and then be able to connect to it from home, outside of the network. Thanks.

Windows 2003, FM server 8.0v4. I have run into this issue several times now and I can't figure it out. Here are the symptoms. FileMaker Server begins to run very slowly and then begins to freeze on new record creation. I close the files on the server and then quit the server. I try to open the File in FileMaker Pro, Windows reports that the file can't be opened because it already opened by some other application. YIKES! This is a problem. I have verified that the neither the Backup app nor the AntiVirus are touching the Live Data folder. I don't know what is opening the file or how to find out what it is. Does anyone have …

Hi, im running fms 5.5 on a Win XP Pro box. The databases displayed within the hosts menu from time to time disappear. I can still access the databases if i specify the IP address...although i dont want my users having to do this each time the dbs drop off the host menu. This problem started when some of the users started to use wireless. Im wondering if this is causing the problem? If i close all dbs and restart the Filemaker server services the dbs are then shown again within the hosts menu. The users are using FMPro 6 Has anyone experienced this issue before? Thanks.

Hi Folks, This is an information request and also maybe a topic to build on. Has anyone heard about any problems or issues with FMSA8 with Server 2003 R2. I have purchased SA and am using it on a developing machine. We are to go live soon but are building up a server to run it on. I am in the process of purchasing the Server OS and am finding that R2 is pretty much all you can buy. I have contacted Filemaker and they have not replied. Has anyone heard anything/read anything or knows if there are issues???

Hi, I am not sure this is the correct forum for this question, but here it goes: What are the cons of schema developing using a client machine opening a hosted file in FMServer? Please take into account that I am always referring to a wired LAN, never a WAN, not a wireless LAN. I have read some negative advice, but not the reasons for it. I can see some big advantages: If I develop using the hosted file, then all global fields, calculations, variables, etc would behave exactly as they finally would. If, on the contrary, I develop with a local copy, this might not be the case and I might not be aware of an issue until I finish the development. …

hey there. my name is james, and i'm in the states. i am assisting some friends with their filemaker issues, having given them the caveat that i'm ignorant to filemaker. they still want my help just because i have some knowledge of networking. so, here is where i am at. they are running a local airport mac network (absent a server) all on 10.4.9. each machine has filemaker pro 8.5. what they want to do is be able to access the database for development remotely. my understanding was that such a move would require me setting up a static ip. so here is what i have done so far. i set up static dns service with dyndns.com. i have the airport's port 80 mapped over t…

The ? is does server handle things differently than pier 2 pier? I will have about 15 users running my solution. Economically, server is the best way to go but would I have to ReWrite for Server? I love the fact that we can turn on SSL encryption on the server to secure information between the server and the client, but how good is this encryption? Would it be on par with creating a VPN using SSL for security purposes ? and are there any known vulnerabilities with SSL that would comprimise the information.

Hi, Im getting all muddled. Ive got what seems to be quite a complex database, using some advanced functionality, which doesnt work properly on IWP. I was going to suggest using local clients to remotly access the data (there are 3 sites, 1 would access a local server) BUT some1 told me that doing this is slower than using IWP (apparently thats why IWP exists?). has any1 done this? can anyone validate this either way? I could really use any help, as otherwise i might have to look at some way of syncing 3 separate files! (eek/ cry) thanks in advance!

Pardon me if this has been discussed before. I have tried reading through the old topics but haven't seen anything quite like what I'm after. Here's the deal - we've got a database that we want to be able to host and share using either FMP or Filemaker Pro Advanced. I know that if you're in a LAN, you can open the file and choose sharing, and others in the network can see the hosted files and open them remotely. I also know that it's possible to use Instant Web Publishing to share the databases on the web. However, we have a remote office where we need to have all the capabilities, including exporting/importing and modifying layouts, so that solution doesn't …

Currently there is 1 Filemaker host in the UK (Rapidhost) who host server 8. the problem is that they dont have any graphing installed on thier servers, and dont plan to add any. So, as we have a few clients who want IWP and/or dont want to host their own, we are looking at setting up our own server for FM server advanced and xmCharts here in the UK. my question is simply, is there any benefit in using 1 platform over the other? thanks

FMSA 8.0v4. I use two critical files - SecureFM Menu Table and our main file (Business.fp7) that both reside in /databases. I have watched the databases open (from Admin) and Business.fp7 opens first before SecureFM Menu Table.fp7. The databases appear to always open in alpha order. We have had no problems with this before now. At 7:00 AM yesterday morning, I was replacing the files on the server. I had, of course, turned off services. As I turned on the services, an early-bird User logged on. It opened Business.fp7 but didn't open SecureFM. It opened on the null layout. Our menus were unlocked and exposed and all of the critical features of SecureFM were dead in …

My web server admin console is not working correctly. Even though I can access my data files using filemaker clients, iwp, and custom web publishing, the web server admin console shows nothing under published databases. Also, when I try to use the web server admin console to turn IWP on or off, it tells me to restart the web server and the wpengine, but when I do those things, it still tells me that I have to do those things, and the change I made does not register. Can anyone help me with this? Please?

Hi all, I have a solution that has been running fine on FMSA 7 for a long time. Recently upgraded to FMSA 8 and thought it was fine, but discovered a weird problem today. One layout in the database has a basic "time log" type portal on it. It shows a given day on the layout, and the portal shows any activities for that day. Each record in the portal has a text field for "activity type" (choose from a dropdown that is populated from a value list) and a field for hours (also from a value list). Below the portal is a button linked to a script. The script only has two commands: 1. Commit Record/Request 2. Open Record/Request When viewed via IWP, this h…

I have recently implemented an Ipsec VPN that allows remote FM users to access our work FM 8 Server - no real problems other than fairly fiddly VPN setups at both ends; but eventually got the Billion home wireless modem router to talk to the central Netgear FVS318. But access is limited to a single home location - I cannot take my laptop and connect from somewhere else. I have read about SSL VPNs which seem to allow web based access without relying on hardware "handshaking" (for want of a better term). Does anyone know if FM8.5 can access "remote" FM Server 8.0 files via a SSL VPN (e.g. the Billion Biguard S5)?

I now need to figure out how to simultaneously share the database on three different computers (one in each exam room). Can someone give me the basic options on how to do this? I have heard of "runtime", "server versions", "web browser solutions", etc., but don't understand what the easiest solution is and don't understand whether I have the right version of the software to create this solution or if I need to purchase more copies of FMD 7, a different version, more licenses, etc.?

Does anyone know if it is possible to host a FileMaker database over the Internet so that users can log in using a regular FileMaker Pro client? Rather than building a separate IWP interface. I presume that it may be possible to do this by opening the correct ports on the server and then directing the FileMaker client to the domain or IP address of the server.
