A little background. My FM 11 server is slow. Very slow. too many things going on on this poor machine at the same time. * * * * FM server has a huge load connecting to a MySQL external data source and going back and forth making native queries slow. My question becomes: Is there a way to load balance FileMaker server acroos 2 separate machines, in order for the one machine to run the SQL querries back and forth, while the other serves the native Filemaker databases? And than just have the 2 FM servers update each others records? would that help removing the load from the "main" server? I have already set up, in the past, a worker and master s…

2008 R2 Filemaker server 11 installed. Have java v 6 .24 and need to update to the latest version of FM (11.03) - the console on http://localhost:16000 points me to the download page. I go to the download page and find updater 11.03 for server/advanced server, download and attept to run. The updater unpacks and it appears to work but then I get a Windows Installer dialog box with various switches - and I see that the updater is not actually installing. I have disabled AV, swicthed off the FM service etc... Anyone experienced this? Thanks

We were still using FM 7 server on our server-1 running windows server 2003 SP2. So i decided to install FM 9 server on our other server-2 also running windows server 2003 SP2. After installing FM 9 server i copied our data to the new FM 9 server installation and the server runs fine. BUT i cannot use the admin console. Im getting the message "The database server is not available. To edit server deployment, please start the database server first.". The database server is allready running, clients can access the files just fine. I tried diffrent java versions (v5 update 22, v6 update 3, v6 update 7, v6 update 25) but no success. The first 3 java versi…

Am having a problem with my FM Server 10 opening the Admin Console I can launch the Admin Console, login, etc. locally on the server. However, when attempting to view databases, clients, etc. I get an error.... "The Database Server is not available. Admin Console functionality is limited to FileMaker Server Overview and the Log Viewer. To use other functionality, please start the Database Server again." When I attempt to start the Database server, nothing happens. The Server appears to be functioning normally as far as "serving" databases. I can view and log in remotely as usual to all databases hosted on this server. This problem has ap…

Hello, We just got a new desktop in today and it has AVG antivirus on it, it is the business version. I have never heard of AVG but anyway, it is blocking access to our FileMaker server hosted files. Last week we built an opener from a demo on the boards and it works just fine on all our other pcs, we have ESET (or NOD 32 I do not know which they go by)on those. When you run the opener on the new desktop with AVG it will not show the FMS hosted files. We thought it was the opener but one of the teachers said it may be the firewall, so we figured out how to turn it off and it worked like a charm, the hosted files show up when the opener runs. Turn the firewa…

I've been using FM for over 10 years. I'm pretty familiar with many of its functions, but I know nearly nothing about sharing. I want to set up a way to share a database, hosted on my computer, with multiple users (about 5 users) who are on DIFFERENT local networks in different countries. I know FM v.11 can share on the same local network. Can I expand privileges across different users on different networks by setting up sharing in OSX 10.6.7? I could probably figure this out via trial and error, but I want to set it up right. I also looked into FM Server, but it doesn't explicitly say it can share across different networks. Thanks for any information you can provi…

I have set up the appropriate directory structure and scripts steps to auto update plugins from our FileMaker Server (Windows 2003; FMS 11 Advanced)and am unable to get the plugins to update, whether they already existed on the client computer or not. Every script step, from confirming that AutoUpdate exists on the server to confirming that the plugin exists on the server to, finally, updating the plugin gets the intended response, yet the plugin is never copied to any of our clients. I've confirmed that the AutoUpdate plugin is installed and activated on the client, and every time the script runs, the FMSAUC_UpdatePlugin step returns a "0", but the plugin is n…

Hi there, Another poser for everyone, especially the usual angels out there: I’m running a script which is quite simple and works fine on my laptop under FM11 Pro. It involves the export of a field created by the ValueListItems command in one FM11 .fp7 file to a comma delimited .txt file, and the opening of another FM11 .fp7 file which imports records from that .txt file, performing some minor auto-enter calculations during the import. It’s a simple, straightforward operation that works fine and only takes between 10 and 20 seconds on my laptop, which was the pc used to design the dbases and associated scripts. My problem arises when this script is run b…

Well, we've had Version 11 running for over a year. Been wonderful. However, today it has "crashed" twice. The first shutdown referenced a corrupt temporary file. The second didn't reference anything. It just closed all files & disconnected everybody. Admin Console: 11.0.2.217. So, it isn't the latest. However, it has never caused any problems before. Server Specs: Host Server – Windows Server 2008 R2 Guest Server – Windows Server 2003 SP2 Hypervisor – Microsoft Hyper-V Nothing new installed recently. This is not good. I'm looking, but I haven't seen any posts related.

I have developed a database that, PM, the IT person at the college where I teach has finally mounted on our server. He is generally very knowledgeable about IT matters but is a relative neophyte as far as Filemaker goes. I know very little about Filemaker server and don't have any direct access to the server in any case. PM person created a rudimentary arrangement for me to upload and download files to and from the server, so that I can import data into the copy of the database that I develop on my own computer before putting it back up on the server. I have three questions. I would be very grateful for any insight: (1) Since going up on the server I and other u…

We're running FM Server 11 on Windows Server 2003 R2. I've followed the export instructions to the letter, and have read everything I can find on the topic. FMSA is configured to share ODBC & JDBC, and so is the file. I am using360Works JDBC plugin v1.74, and the 'JDBC Example.fp7' file from that plugin for testing. Hello everyone, it has been a while since I have had to ask a question, been lurking and learning, but we have started playing around with a FM server and I have a question about shutting down a server with UPS software. If the battery runs down, the software that comes with our UPS will do a shutdown of our server. If the UPS shuts down the server is that a bad thing? I would think that the FM server software is still running and needs to be stopped before the shutdown. Thanks again for the help from this forum! Michelle

Hi. In my database I have a small script that acts as an activitiy log, whereby as each user moves to and from particular screens or specific record activity, a new record is written to one of the tables with the user's login name, time & date, etc. It works great... except... (theres always a but) - the time recorded in the table is that of the client's workstation - which is fine except for several clients are operating in different timezones so the order of the log gets out of whack. I have considerded a few options to get around this, but none will work satisfactorily. They included having a table that contains the timezone of that user - but they may c…

Hey Community, FileMaker Server 11 Advanced (11.0.2.217) installed and running live databases on Mac OS X Server 10.5.8. I recently ran some software updates on the server, including some Java updates, and that seems to have killed the ability to launch the FMS Java console. I am getting the notorious "Unable to launch the application." error message. It sounded like an FMS update addresses this issue (I have version 11.0.3.309 downloaded and waiting) but the updater, naturally, won't install if FMS is running (which it does on startup). So my normal method for closing databases safely has been denied me. Catch-22. In trying to solve this problem, I dis…

Hello, first post here. I did a search and didn't an answer. I am deploying FM10 server on a Win 2003 Std Server. The clients are FMP10 clients on Win XP. They have fast machines and at least 2GB RAM. When they open the FMP client, it takes almost a full minute or more to launch. Then trying to open a remote DB takes even longer. Just maximizing the window after it does finally open takes an incredibly long time. I am on a Vista machine and it seems to be running well on this machine. But I wanted to get some experience input from the community. What would you think the problem is? Are there known performance issues with FMP10 and WinXP? Anyone might …

I am at the present time nibbling my way into the concepts of filemaker server. This is very new to me so some of these questions will be pretty basic. I appreciate your forbearance. We currently have some databases hosted on a web based server. We pay $80 a month for this service and have fairly limited access. We use this as a way to communicate with my cabinet shop. These databases are used for task management. We embed PDF files (and occasionally jpegs) into container fields. These embedded files explain details about the cabinets we are building. As soon as the information has been harvested we typically delete the record because we don'…

Sorry for the noob questions, but I can't seem to find any proper answers. I am running Filemaker Server Advanced 9 and want to share certain databases with my San Diego office so they can access data. I turned on the server and all looks well, but when I view my server's IP address I only see the Apache default page. From within my own network, what URL should I be using to bring up my databases in a web interface or testing purposes? Something similar to [my server's local IP]:16000 but different since that's for the admin.

I have an ongoing issue with a FileMaker 11 Server (Mac OS). Every 4-6 weeks searches ( ie Finds ) on the database quit working properly. If you are in a table for data stored in the table it works fine, however if you are searching for data stored in a related table or searching a calculation that uses related data the Find returns bad results. The issue presents itself when running Finds from a client or directly on the FMS using server side scripts. The temporary fix for this is to close the database, stop the database server and then restart the database server. The issue goes away for awhile but comes back after several weeks. The whole server does not…

Hi! i am running FMS on SBS_2008 and have XP, Win7 and MacOS_10.6.7 clients attaching to it. Every now and then it seems to happen, that records, generated on a client, do not get handed over to the Server, or at least, they do not gest stored. this is not only dangerous, as information might get lost, but it undermines the trust-level in the it. i have no clue of where to start looking, so if anybody could come up with an idea of where to start looking, this would be highly appreciated! thx a lot, philipp

Hi there, Im running FM 11 Server with various users connecting to it. I want to create a shared folder on my server into which users can create PDF's using a script attached to a button. However, I want the folder to be Read Only to users and only allow Filemaker to have Full Control over the folder. My question is, when a user clicks the button for Filemaker to create the PDF in the shared folder, does the OS use Filemaker Server (and thus Full Control) as the user or will the individual user that creates the doc (and thus Read Only) be used as authentication against the shared folders user privileges?

Hi there, whenever I try to install FileMaker Server from the file fms_10.0.1.64.exe (which came as the developer version of FileMaker Server 10) a dialog with a progress bar comes up with a list of extracted files. About to leave on a business trip for three weeks, I thought I'd check to see if our Filemaker Server Advanced 9 machine (a Mac Pro) needed a software update. The new Java update was there (I think it's 10.6 update 3), and I installed it...little realizing that a monster was sneaking into my house to make my life way more difficult. Now I cannot load the admin at all -- it's totally broken, crashes on startup either giving an "Unable to launch the application" error, or alternately just quitting when I try to load the app via the shortcut on the desktop. This is _really_ a pain. I already reinstalled the OS once, being sure to uncheck the java update when it showed it to …

I just upgraged to FMP 9 Advanced yesterday. We have FMS 7 and FMP 7 on all workstations (except mine now...which has been upgraded). I use a shortcut on the desktop to open our database: fmp7://10.168.1.101/customers.fp7 It doesn't work with FMP 9 Advance. So, I tried the alternative. File > Open > Remote. In the dialog box, it shows the correct host on the left side, but it doesn't show any available files. There should be several. So, I opened FMP 7, File > Open > Remote, and it lists all the files there. I can still open the database under FMP 7 but NOT under FMP 9 Advance. When I manually enter the network file path, it says: "Cu…

I am considering using the plug-in auto update mechanism to distribute a plugin to a number of our Filemaker users who do not have it currently installed. Am I correct in assuming that the update process occurs directly between the Filemaker Client and the server, so there is no requirement to set up special access privileges on the computer hosting Filemaker server? Thanks Brian

Hello, in this forum a few have posted that their FMS 11 on Windows Server 2008 Standard 64-bit, actually slows down after some time due to a memory problem with this setup. I would love to hear from anyone who runs such a setup please. Can you confirm that this combination has a performance problem after some time of operation? If so Im thinking of installing my new FM Server on Windows 2003 as I cannot afford a performance issue here. Thanks for any responses, Spongebob

Hi, I've only used server for small applications but I have a large use and am trying to decide if it is feasible to use Filemaker or have to go with something like Microsoft SQL etc so I can spec out this project. Basically it is for a back end for a point of sale like DB that will connect with about 10-50K systems (not fmp clients but some type of standalone hardware). The clients will collect simple transaction data and that will be sent back to the server. Other users will be able to log on and see see their transaction totals with a front end web page. (kind of like air-miles with points) My questions are: Can FMP be scaled up really large and stil…

I've read many similar situations (port 5003, the .pem problem, etc) but not quite the same as what I am experiencing here. I've got 15 or so DBs hosted on a OS X 10.6 machine running FMS11. I currently rent space on a filemaker web server. One of the things I notice about the databases I store on this server is that the option to "SAVE A COPY AS" is dimmed out. I can read and write to the databases but cannot save a copy onto a thumb drive. I have been building some proprietary software for my company and I would like my workers to have unfettered access to it but I do not necessarily want them to own a copy of their own. If they end up going to work for somebody else I do not want my competitors to have a copy of my software. The people who typically work for me are smart enough to know the value of this software and smart enough to kn…

FM 11 - 20 clients running off Server 11 and using Windows XP 2 - While in find mode, three of those clients can't see what they are typing until they click out of the field. This is only happening in FileMaker. No strange behaviour in any other programs. Windows administrator checked that everything is the same on machines with and without the problem. Measures taken: 1. Made sure hardware and Windows settings matched between machines 2. Made sure FM memory settings were the same. Because it looks like a refresh issue, I wondered if this had something to do with the way the client was communicating with FM server. Sorry if this post is in the wro…

Hi Guys, I'm scratching my head over this one and its probably something simple, I have multiple clients, some winXP and some Win7 running FM11, all connecting to a single database via server11 on a Win7 machine. What is the best way to do this? Should we just uninstall 1st and re-install on new server, any pitfalls, etc;? We don't want to have any problems. Thank you very much.

I have a separation model - UI and Data files hosted on FMS11 on windows server 2008. Clients are using FMP11 (I'm using FMP11Adv) on OSX. I have set different levels of access priveleges including [Full Access] for admin (Me). In the past if I closed the UI and Data files on FMS, removed them, copied them to a shared drive and then copied them from there to my local machine these would behave the same as the hosted version in terms of access. Today, these files copied from FMS11, either from backed-up versions or following closure and removal of the current hosted files, only open, via the UI file, on my local machine with Guest privileges. If I open the Data file this o…

I'm trying to create a file with FileMaker Server Scheduler. If I run the script, it works just fine. If I schedule the script to run, I get a "scripting error 800" (Unable to create file on disk). I'm thinking it is some kind of a permissions issue, but I can't seem to figure out what account FMServer 11 is using to try to create the file.

I have a cabinetshop that has several databases which are hosted on a webserver that I rent space on. I have them on this server so that I can upload drawings from a remote location and have the guys be able to access them directly in the shop. The current workpath is to upload a PDF document directly into a container field. I periodically purge unused records because the file size gets bloated and performance starts to slow down. I would like to make more use of referenced images rather than imbedded images but don't know how to make this happen with the web hosted server. I know that I could have a master folder with referenced files if this whole sys…

I have a FM Server 11 (Adv on Win) installation where I need to update one table via a server-side script at 2am every morning. Although most users will be logged off at that time, there is always the possibility that someone will be connected. Is there any feature in FM Server that allows me to force a disconnect of all users of a particular database while a server-script runs? I thought about closing and reopening the database and then having each client check for some value in a table (i.e. the last import date) before they are allowed to connect, but... thought there might be a more elegant built-in feature for doing this since it seems commonplace. Tha…

For files on FileMaker server, simple file references seem to work best and it seems that normally you do not need to take folders into account even if they are being used. Except... I have a client with about 40 files on their server and one of them is much larger than the others. So for backup schedule purposes it has been placed in a separate folder, and it is backed up less frequently. MAIN this.fp7 that.fp7 other.fp7 FOLDER2 bigfile.fp7 All file reference for files to each other are of the form: file:this.fp7 file:that.fp7 file:other.fp7 file:bigfile.fp7 etc Never noticed the slightest problem. All files and table occur…

I have a quick question about using filemaker on your website. I have done this before, however I want to change the setup of the deployment. I have an external web host that I want to use. I have done a lot of reading and what to ensure that I am correct with my thinking. To connect our external web server to our filemaker databases (web publishing engine and the actual databases) I need to install Filemaker Server on the web server so that the web server module is installed and that server is made into a worker? Is this correct, or can I simply include the filemaker API on the web server and go? Because I have included the API on the web server and when I go to change m…

Hi, I'm running filemaker server advanced 10 on a Windows Server 2003. I've applied the latest filemaker server updates available. I have a few imports from an Access Database that happen on an hourly basis. Probably about once a week I find the files that the scripts import to are corrupted and I need to run a recovery on them. The filemaker server just marks the database as closed and then refuses to open them. There are several scripts and several files. They don't all corrupt at the same time, it appears to be quite random. Other files are fine, it is only the files that are imported to. I couldn't find any indication in the logs of anything going wrong…

We are using Filemaker 9 Server and Filemaker 9 desktops. The "External Resources" in all 60 of our databases have all contained the following filepaths:"fmnet/xx.xxx.xxx.xxx/filename". I have been having tremendous router trouble on our network, when I change out our router, the computer that hosts the Filemaker files (and filemaker server) IP address changes, causing me to have to manually change the external resources on hundreds of references. I discovered I can do a reference of: "file/filename" and still get the files to open correctly. My question is, do I need to be concerned about having filemaker seek out some old backup file instead of the correct file si…

This is a general question about how filemaker works: Sometimes our database opens a file normally (I can tell because at the top of the database it says the filename, "Customers (djbserver.local)" Other times the filename may have a number after it, "Customers-2 (djbserver.local)." Why does this do this and do I have to be concerned about our staff adding data to the wrong database?? Using FM 9 server and FM 9 desktops. Thank you in advance!

Hey guys, I'm not really sure if this is the right place for this, please direct me elsewhere if I am wrong. I have created a CRM for a company I work with, and have been using IWP to allow multi-user support and such. This has been an OK solution, but not optimal due to the lack of features in IWP and also the layout looks terrible. I'm looking for another solution to how I can get multi-user support with everyone remote opening the file. Would FileMaker Server allow this? If so, how is the best way to set it up, etc. Additionally, we have iPads with FileMaker Go, which are also required to connect to it - does Server support this? Is this …

I was wondering (conceptually) if it would be possible to do the following: Host several different Filemaker Pro 11 advanced databases on Filemaker server with a front-end FM Pro program that would open and allow access to a specific database based on a password or pin entered by a user coming into the front-end program. It appears that one cannot issue the "Open File" command from a script when a FileMaker Pro database is running on FileMaker Server. Is this true? Is there any way to accomplish this? Thanks for any feedback. --Peter Brooks [email protected]

Hi everyone, I searched for this but couldn't find anything. I have a project that I am trying to get a backup of so I can move it to another server. The problem I have is nobody has admin access to the server computer. I can access the solution and I know where the server is but can't get into it to copy the files. I was hoping to set up a schedule through server admin to back up the files to a computer that I know the admin log in for but can't seem to be able to do it. Is there a different path configuration for backing up to a different machine? I am almost positive that the machine has been mapped to the server but i still get an invalid path message. …

So, we have a number of users using our FM Server. About half are on FMP clients, and the other half are only using IWP. Occasionally, we get a call from one of the IWP users saying that either web pages aren't loading, or they get a message saying Service Unavailable. When I look at the processes running on our server (Apple Xserve 10.5.8), it's easy to spot the FM Web Publishing proccess because it is using 100% (or sometimes more, somehow!) of the CPU. Once we stop and restart the service, it runs fine again for anywhere from a few hours to a week. The CPU usage kinda tells me that there is some hidden infinite loop in my code, and I'll keep looking for it, bu…

Hello I have the following problem. I am hosting a file(small example file attached to this post) on "FMS 11 Advanced 11.0.2.217" When I open the file and switch(press ctrl+1 or run script from menu ) to a limited account, the I cannot perform a quickfind or simple search. But when I take the file of the server and access it locally, then I can perform a quickfind or simple find with a limited access account. I do not think that this is a normal behaviour, and I hope somebody points out my mistake. Please feel free to use my attached file. Thanks Robert noaccess.test_2.zip

Hi all, I have tried uploading a database file to FMSA v10. The admin tool reports that the file uploaded successfully, but on finishing with the upload wizard the file is not listed in the databases pane. I have refreshed this view several times and tried uploading the file into its own folder as well as not opening the file on successful upload. Server is Windows 2003 Server, and on checking the file structure the new database is indeed moved to the appropriate folder and its permissions are the same as other files in that folder. Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi all, I need to move FileMaker Server 8 over to a new server (basically our current one is about to die). I've browsed lots of other forums but I've not found an exact guide for total n00bs such as myself : I wasn't involved in the original installation of FM server so I have no idea what I need to do. If anyone could give me a step by step guide I'd really appreciate it. Other info: We're also upgrading our network and PCs as well, so we'll all have new IP addresses (including the server) and we'll all be reinstalling the FileMaker clients on our PCs as well (we use a mixture of v8/v8.5 and v9). The Server will be running on MS Server 2003 x86 …

I've had Filemaker 10 Server for quite a while now. The reason I updated to it was to do server side imports. After months, I cannot get this feature to work on my existing databases. I do import/updates based on a matching ID field. If I make a test database with a couple fields and a few records, I can successfully get an import/update script to run on schedule. My actual production databases just stall. The Filemaker Server admin app just says "Running" and the script never updates anything. I have no idea what is happening. Also, there seems to be no way to end this script once it is stuck in the endless "Running" status. I think I got over my…

Does anyone have any suggestions for a server log viewer? My server's logs are so clogged up with daily mundane-ness that if there ever was something there I should see, I would likely never see it because it's hiding in the mass of log entries. What I'd like to be able to do is omit common/known items from the log so that uncommon/un-known items are the only thing I see. When I say omit, I mean omit from view, not omit from the log entirely. Also, what I am referring to when I say daily mundane-ness/common/known items is these types of entries: Schedule "AutoMailer" running Schedule "AutoMailer" has started FileMaker script "AutoMailer" Client "AutoMail…

Hello all, I'm using SQLserver 2008 with Visual studio and SSID. I'm trying to retreive data from a Filemaker table via ODBC (sequelink) and put them into a MySQL table. In mysql (and in all standard SQL compliant RDBMS) multiple fields doesn't exists, so I have 20 fileds which should receive 20 values from a multiple field with 20 repetitions. I don't know (and I can't figure) how to select every single repetition from filemaker and update MySQL. I'm afraid that this is not possible. Do you know which syntax to use to query Filemaker properly (if any)?

Hi. I have several databases installed on an FMS 11 Advanced on Windows Server 2008 R2 elsewhere on the Internet - ie not here with me. Developing the database can be slow at times and would like to remote into the server and develop it there. Can Fm11ProAdv be installe and run on the same box as server? The specs say so, but I have found that one or the other tend to play up. Am I just unlucky or has somebody else also experienced this? If so, and fixed, what do I look out for? Cheers, Greg

We have a solution running in the office on FMSA. There will probably be many changes to the solution over the next few months and I'm just wondering what is the best way to handle a solution that is being modified often. Especially since we will be entering data into the db regularly. Do we close the solution on server, copy it off, modify it, then re-load it onto the server or is there an easier way? Such as, close it and modify on the server, then re-open?

does anyone have a script that they can share that gracefully shuts down all filemaker databases and then checks to make sure they are all closed and then reboots the server? we're running fmp server 10 on a mac xserve. i know this can be done with fmsadmin but it would ideally require some error checking, etc. and i'd suspect that someone already has created one that possibly could be shared. we find that we need to reboot the server about once a month or we have problems with databases and i'd like to schedule this as an automated process versus having to do it manually. thanks!

Hello All I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this. I am running Server 11 Advance, on a Win 2008 server. The server has two network cards. One network card is set for 192.168.2.x and the other 192.168.21.x. This needs to be this way for some security work the server does. Since the restart of the machine, it grabbed the IP address of 192.168.21.1, instead of the assigned 192.168.2.10. Now the .21 network does not really have a structure (no DNS no router etc.) I need the server to use the other network card. Is there a way to accomplish this? Thanks

I have recently migrated my solution to a UI and data separated model. I am having issues with stopping the data file from appearing in the Open Remote dialog on the server that is hosting the file. I have closed both files and gone to Sharing and clicked the "Don't display in Open Remote File" dialog checkbox but this has not removed the file. I have also removed all Network access to the file but it still displays in the Open Remote Dialog even though users have no access to the file itself. Where else do I have to remove access to the file to prevent users from seeing it while still having access to the data file.
