FileMaker Server v7 - v11

Discussing issues with Server version 7 - 11 ( .fp7)

  1. Started by squidley,

I have Filemaker Server 10 installed on a Macmini with OS X Server (Snow Leopard) installed. I can easily upload and open a remote Filemaker DB over my local network. What I can't figure out is how to open access the DB over the internet via our fixed IP. Can someone help me with this or point me to where the instructions are for this? My goal is to allow coworkers to access this DB from their homes via the internet. They each have FM10 client installations. To clarify, I want them to be able to open the actual FM Database, not via a web browser. Thanks!

  2. Actually, I'm not completely sure that the problem is as stated in the subject line, but it sure looks that way. We are running FMP 8.5Adv on a number of platforms (OSX, OS9 and various Windows), connecting to about two dozen files on an OSX (10.4.11) server running FMS9.0.3.325. It has been stable for several years now, with minor ups and downs as we fiddle. In the last week, all of a sudden, a number of files running on the clients have stopped working normally. In particular, a number of fields in particular layouts are marked as requiring values before the layout can be changed. All of a sudden, FMP8.5 clients are insisting that fields on OTHER layouts be comp…

Been a long time since I've been on the forum so please excuse any social gaffes. I have spent several days searching this and other forums and have seen several similar situations but can't find an answer that works, but feel free to point to one if anyone knows of one. Have been running FMSA7 on Dell 1750 with Win2003 and IIS for about 4 years. Solutions are served to remote clients and to web via IWP. This machine also hosts a couple of websites, FTP server, and streaming video. None of these gets a large volume of traffic. Recently lost our access to IWP. I can see the Database Homepage and filenames but get a "Database Not Available" error when tryin…

I am doing a project for a client. They are using fms 8 on a pc server. I built the project in fm10. The file has the extension .fp7, sharing is turned on, accounts have fm network access. The server says the file is open and normal but no one can connect to it (open remote file dialog is NOT checked). Any suggestions??? This is baffling since the server says the files are normal. BTW, the server is properly hosting out other files so it is not a connection issue.

I have not logged in to our FileMaker Server 9 Admin Console in a long time, but this morning after reinstalling FMP Advanced 9 on a new laptop I cannot connect to the server so I wanted to check that the server was ok. But the Admin Console login is clearly something unusual because I can't figure out what the login is. Is there a way I can retrieve or reset my forgotten login?

Can someone help me understand the maximum number of FileMaker files Server 11 Advanced can host simultaneously? The FileMaker site advertises the following, does this mean FMSA11 now can host "unlimited" files per HW constraints? "NEW! FileMaker Server 11 Advanced does not limit the number of FileMaker Pro clients. Connections are limited only by your hardware and operating system." Thanks in advance, much appreciated.

I have a client who's server had a power outage and FileMaker 9 Server was closed improperly (Windows). I was able to successfully recover their database files so that is fine but the problem is I now can't get FileMaker Server Admin Console to open. I've tried stopping and starting the FileMaker service (which seems to work), but when I open the console nothing comes up. I've even tried uninstalling the FileMaker Server software and reinstalling but that didn't fix the problem. Any ideas?

Hi all, I have FileMaker Server 9 running (under Max OS X Server 10.5.5), sharing a database via FM and ODBC. On a Windows PC, I have the Sequelink ODBC 5.5 driver installed, and my system DSN is configured and works fine. The driver seems to take a really long time to run almost any query. This query: SELECT * FROM Shipment WHERE REFERENCE1='18281' returns only 1 record, but my hard drive's grinding away and my client application is hung for a good 30-45 seconds before the data appears in it... Is there any way I can structure my query to improve the speed...? Where is the performance bottleneck?

I'm beginning to move my FM files over to Server 9. I used to have an icon on each workstation that, when clicked on, would take you directly into a specific application and ask for your password. For exactly, to get into the day camp application, click on the day camp icon and you automatically go to the file for day camp where it asks for your password. Now that I use server, I open remote, and then open local or favorite hosts and click on the appropriate file. Is there a way to create an icon on the desktop that will automatically go to the server and open the particular file directly without the additional steps? Sorry for being so long winded on this one. Mike

  20. I have an encryption computation that exists as a command-line tool that I can call from the OS X shell (e.g. `/usr/bin/myEncrypt xyz` returns a value: 12345 ). I need to use this on a server-scheduled script to use this to populate a field in my database. I see that in FMSA11 there is a new class of scripts which has pre and post scripts -- It runs a FileMaker script, then a Shell script, then a FileMaker script -- so I could probably use this to export records, process them in the shell, then re-import. But this seems like overkill. Is there perhaps a simpler way to do this? Maybe using PHP or ODBC in the shell script itself?

  21. I've got a very basic script that loops through all of the records in a database and updates 1 field (indexed) with the value of another (non-indexed) calc. field. This it to improve performance from PHP API web apps. When I run the script from inside FM Pro myself it works just fine. When I setup a schedule to run the script it says "running" for about 30 seconds and then says "Script aborted" without any information as to why. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

They would like an automated way to copy the most recent FMS backup file from their local drive across their network to their main fileserver running Windows Server 2008. 25. I have written a bespoke solution for a client called ADG. This has a two file structure, interface and a data file. These are constantly crashing and taking down the server too; this has become so bad that the client has resorted to client copy as a host as while this still crashes often the files do not corrupt when doing so. The situation is no longer workable, I have tried everything I know to resolve this problem including a complete rewrite of the data file, checking all of the layouts and rewriting many of the scripts along with the following, which has been sent to FileMaker support who also cannot help me, saying they cannot reproduce the problem: SYSTEM ENVIRO…

BAckup was working fine until last Friday. now when I try to do a backup it says permission denied in the schedule pane's status. When I look at the schedule assistant, it tells me the path is valid. I've tried several locations to no avail. The 3 drives on the Server are all VMWare Virtual Scsi disks. IT tells me nothing has changed.... any ideas on how to resolve? thanks in advanced.

  59. I'm mid-process developing a system comprising around 60+ tables with around 250+ TOs. Some of the layouts feature multiple filtered portals on separate TABS - these are the ones giving the problem. The refresh window command (by hand or script) doesn't always reset the cached results for all the related tables on the separate TABS even though they are on the same window - there are 7 TABS, each with it's own portal from a TO. I'm simply doing: Go to Layout Refresh Window [Flush chached join results] This does NOT happen when using the file single-user, but the caching problems occur when opening the file from a hosted point, either FMS or FMP. My fi…

We have a FM10 database. Someone is offering to host the database for us on a FM8 server. I was wondering if this will cause any problems. Our database was built on the separation model. Here is the scenario: The data file, which has no layouts and very few scripts, on FM8 server; the interface file, which has all the layouts and most script and uses a lot of new FM9 and FM10 features, on FM10 clients.

Hi All, I need some feedback on some issues. I have a solution that is inside an Internal Network (My company's internal network) Having web solutions for our costumer can be a bit difficult since they have to log in to the network, via VPN. Is it possible to build web solutions since the filemaker DB is inside the filewall for my costumer and not have them log in to the network(basically having it accessible to anybody)? If this cannot happen, can I have filemaker on a different server, in which I can build web solutions from that DB? How can I effectively exchange data from this 'new filemaker DB' on a different server outside the firewall to the main DB that…

From time to time with no apparent reason, I find that the FMSA10 admin console seems to stop updating it's status. For instance, it doesn't accurately show the current logged in users (might be data from 2 days back), it shows a script still running from 2 days ago and none others have since run, even though they have (I can see the backups that resulted from a scheduled script, even though the console doesn't show them as having run yet), etc etc. Has anyone else had this issue, and if so, what is the resolution? I am running FMSA10v1 on Windows Server 2003, 4Gb RAM. Thanks.

The process works without issue when I open the file on my client (from the hosted server) and run the script. However, when I try to schedule the same script to run from the server I am getting an '800' error. I tried writing to the local server, different network locations and get the same result. Hi, I'm having problems with my solution and would appreciate any help or suggestion that could solve my problem in the shortrun... I have a solution where users can run scripts that requiere a lot of iterative processes with queries. This ends up with 5 or more users using that kind of functionality at the same time and so the fmserverd process gets to 170% of CPU (although the system has 90% idle). This makes the application run slowly. At the moment I am using the pause scriptsept in scripts to help the server so that it does not get to heavy load that easy and I am considering running those processes in the background of users in future versions.
