Hi. We are still running our database in FileMaker 6 for clients and Server 5.5. We have a cross platform environment with most macs on OSX panther and pc's on windows 2000 or NT. Our server is on a standard G5 Dual 2 GHz Power PC running Mac OS X 10.3.5 We want to upgrade our Mac Clients to Tiger so we can upgrade our Adobe Creative Suite. Can we upgrade our FileMaker Mac Clients to Tiger and leave the Server as it is? Or do we need to upgrade our Server G5 as well? In either event, are there any conflicts between Tiger and FileMaker Client 6 or FileMaker Server 5.5 in either of the following Two Scenarios: 1: Server stays at 10.3.5 …

Hi, I created an online ordering system using FMPro 6 unlimited and FMP server 5.5 with IIS. Somehow, internal users can place orders online, but outside customers cannot. If anyone knows what the problem is, please let me know since I've been working with this for awhile and still can't make it work right. Thank you.

Hello! I use Web Publishing with FMS9, and I have a few issues regarding its integration with Apache. My primary concern is that it insists on including its own server-status config into httpd.conf, which in turn has an AddDefaultCharset directive. This turns on the charset header globally, which interferes with the sites hosted on the same server. Is this absolutely unavoidable? Why is it so important for FMS to have Apache serve pages with an UTF-8 header added? I tried adding an "AddDefaultCharset off" line after the FMS Includes, which solved my problem temporarily, while I could access my databases too. Too bad anytime I update the deployment opti…

System: Mac OSX Tiger Filemaker Pro: 6 (upgrade from 5.5) Problem: I had installed about 10 filemakers and only one is giving me problems. This one is not willing to open files remotely due to 'can't find host on network'. So i had checked the 'Filemaker Pro > Preferences > Application' under 'Network Protocol' I should be able to select 'TCP/IP' but it's not listed and the only thing that is listed is ''. I had deleted preferences files, reinstalled under different username administrator, root and etc.. all the posibilites that could alter the network preferences on FileMaker Pro. Thank you.

Hello all, I hope there's some one who can help in the next two hours out there I explain better my problem: today we were trying to set up a second instance of filemaker server database, so we installed it in two machines (as we need a backup server and in the first one it seems to be not properly configured - even if service was running -). Filemaker server remains running on three machines at the same time for hours. I've tried later to enter the admin console of the first (and primary) filemaker server. After clicking on the fms adm. icon on my desktop and after splash windows close, I've been not asked to login by the applet and the consolle didn't start as…

Hi, I have a problem that just came up today - before that everything was running OK. I have a database which I run from FMS9 on OS X 10.4.10 and when I´m opening the database with the FileMaker Client FMS9 I can´t add or change a thing. When I try to open the same database direclty with FMP9 I can type in it and everything works - so I would think that the problem should come from the server and the administration passswords or something. I didn´t changed anything and have my system and an administrator account which should be able to have full possibilities with the database. Are there any settings inside FMS9 that I may have overlooked? Would be very thankful fo…

When defining the 1st task with the Task Scheduling Assistant I got this: "Error occurred while getting the databases size." This on a Windows Server 2003, with VM Ware. I went on to define more within the scheduler itself, with no problem. Resulting backups seem healthy. FMI tech didn't know what that error meant, but thought if the convert into fp7 format without problems, then they are fine. Any one see this before? Could it just be a VM Ware oddity? [replacement post, btw, I think the other was eaten by the server glitch.]

Hi, Hope Im in the right forum. I recently completed a 20 file solution in 8.5 for a client running Terminal server (windows server 2000). To cut a long story short the files look like *******. The colours are not rendering correctly, the resolution looks extremely low. Has anyone had problems with this issue, is there a way to upgrade the terminal server to a higher res, any ideas, they look great from the server console, its only when the files are viewed thru terminal.

I have a solution that I will be needing to share it's data with a SQL database on the same server. I've been able to do this on a stand alone copy of FM Pro, but now I will need to do this on the Server. I'm running FM Pro Server and I'm assuming that all I need to do is install the ODBC drivers (DataDirect 5.5) that come with FMS 9.0 to have SQL connect the same as I did on the stand alone. I see that FMS comes with ODBC connection, but I believe thats only for FMS Advanced since it's ghosted out. Whats the purpose of the ODBC in FMS, Do we need to have FMS Advanced in order to connect to another data source (such as SQL?). FMP 9.0 does that as a stand alone, I can't se…

Hi, Ever since upgrading to FileMaker Server 9 and Pro 9, performance is very slow on some larger databases. Lowest spec PC here is an Athlon 3400+ with 512MB RAM. Network is 100MB Full Duplex with 2-3 clients at any one time. The databases (7 in total) were upgraded from v5, and read somewhere about old file/ip references - How do I check these? Before the upgrade, the files were hosted on a client pc, as opposed to a dedicated server. Thanks/...

I am running FM Server 9 on a Dual 2.0 Xeon Win2003 R2 server with 4GB of RAM. I have a script that seems to be losing records. It was not doing this when server was 8.04. It looks as though the FM Pro clients are processing the script faster than the server can handle it (even on slower PCs), because by adding a simple 2 second pause or a flush cache to disc to the script corrects the problem. The issue is that now the head of research says he can't trust any of our hundreds of scripts until the flush cache part is added to each script. Has anyone else been having issues with Filemaker Server 9 performance lagging way behind Filemaker Pro?

As part of our nightly back up routine our company runs several win batch scripts. One of the scripts (stopFM)is set to open the server admin console and take down filemaker services, back up the databases, then bring the server back up. With the new remote admin client the script is asked to authenticate (no authentication was needed before). The machine running the script is a member of the fmsadmin group in our active directory. Is there a way to bypass the authentication? Shouldn't AD take care of that? Any help would be appreciated

This is on a windows 2003 server with VMware, configuring a new server set up. When using the Task Scheduling Assistant, I get this error: "Error occurred while getting the databases sizes". It works anyway, and editing schedules directly behave well and run fine. According to FMI tier 1 support, although he had no information on this error, he surmised that if the backed up files are convertable to FM8+ (as a test of health) then they are probably fine. Any comments?

I have a Student database with Calculation fields that will indicate whether a student in the Youngest in the family at a particular school. The Field is marked either "Y" or "N". When the database is stand alone on my desktop, I can do a search on Youngest and the School and it works. When I put the database on my FP8SA, it doesn't work at all (No Records Found). I have no clue why this would be. The Calculation is based on several fields Birth_Date [Date] Self Relationship "Y" on the table Address+school name == Address+school name Birth_Date_D [GetAsDate(Birth_Date)] Born_Last [Max(Y::Birth_Date_D)] Youngest [iF(GetAsNu…

Okay, so I've got a solution from heck here at the office and it's running on a paltry Apple G5 XServe Single Proc 2.0 Ghz with 3Gb RAM... Needless to say the application performance is way under par here. I'm rebuilding the IT Infrastructure for the building and as part of that, I'm replacing the primary FMS. I've got to come up with a server which will be reliable, fast, FAST, **FAST**, and stable. Currently looking at a dual-core Xeon with a ton of RAM, Hardware Raid on the HDD subsystem, and dual NIC's for the internal/external subnets. (assuming that I can get that hack working with FMS) Question is: Is this overkill. I know that FMS has a cache limi…

Unclear on this: I'm setting up Filemaker Server 9 on Windows Server 2003, ONLY for access by filemaker clients over a WAN (ie no web-based access at all). In the server, if I want to use higher security by checking "Secure connections to FileMaker Server", do I need to purchase an SSL certificate? Or is the latter only necessary for web-based connections? Thanks in advance for any help! James Reed Soho Solutions

I have recently converted to FMServer 9 and wanted to start upgrading my clients likewise. The clients that I have switched to 9 work fine except for one problem. Some of my custom graphics on my layouts in FM9 are missing. As you can see in the image below, it's not all of the custom graphics (the tabs and the small circles in the upper right are still there). If you need a closer view, right-click and select 'View Image' to get the full size. I believe the problem lies somewhere in the FM9 client, rather than the server. I run a completely MacOS network and have FM Server 9 running my database (Mac OSX Server -- 10.4.10) with Mac OSX clients: some with FM…

Id really like to move to 9 ASAP to take advantage of the new features, however due to time constraints I wont be able to upgrade our server to 9 for a few months. Is it ok to move the clients to 9 advanced while still running 8 server? any possible got yahs with this set up? (If i remember correctly there were some issues running 8 client with 7 server but i don't remember the specifics) Is this an acceptable practice? I haven't been able to find much information on this. Any help would be appreciated.

Server 8 has 3 other databases open, and all is well with those. This 4th database will not open. It is located in the same shared folder as the other 3 databases, and has the same permissions. Sharing is turned on in the database (I have tried it both ways). I brought the file over on a flash drive to mitigate permisions issues. I also tried matching permissions with a file that works. When I start up the server, that file shows CLOSED, and when I try to open it, it blinks, stays closed. I can't figure out anything else to do!! What am I missing???

Our technical chaps say that Windows XP Pro drops connections if there are more than about 10 concurrent users- how does this affect FileMaker Pro 9 guests of FileMaker Server 9. Would it be better to use Windows Server 2003? We are going to need about 30 users. Should we also disable FileSharing on the server? I have FMS 9 on a computer running Windows XP. Whenever I try to configure automatic backups, on the last "Summary" step, I get a pop-up saying "Admin Server Connection Error: An Unknown Error Has Occurred" and when I click OK it exits the FileMaker Server Admin Console. I have tried completely uninstalling and reinstalling the server software, but I still get the same error. Any help would be great!

Does anyone know what Activation Error 103 is, from FMI's activation server? This is what I get when I try to activate a copy of FMPA 9 on a client's server running Terminal Services? FYI I'm using the same license code on my main, local workstation, and I have deactivated the copy that was activated on my laptop. I think this should satisfy FMI's requirements. Anyone know any differently?

I am looking for more details on the 'Server-side scripts' in FMP 9 Server/Server Advanced. Can they be triggered or only scheduled? I'd like to trigger a script to run on the server from a small FMP file offsite or via the internet. I can run the script remotely, from 8.5 client. But a script that takes 5 minutes to run onsite takes about 45 minutes to run offsite. I'd like to trigger it offsite to run onsite, on the server. Can this be done with FMP 9 Server's 'Server-side scripts'? Can someone clue me in or point me to the documentation? Hi friends, I'm a long term FileMaker user, but now I need to use a new feature that I never did before: CWP (php). I'd like to develop a big website to be used by thousands of people. I am aware that FileMaker Server 9 and its php support can handle something like 500 connections at the same time. It's a lot, but what if I need 3.000? Is it scalable? I've notice that I can install the server in multiples machines. Does it do the trick? I mean, if I install it in more MACs will it serve more connections? I've heard that MySql is a strong database server, but the easiness of doing the hard work in FileMaker is fantastic, so I'd like to take advantage o…

Hi All - I just installed FileMaker Pro 8.5v2 and FileMaker Pro 9 on a Windows Vista computer. In either version, when I select Open Remote, I see the FileMaker Server on my network(v8.0.4 on a Windows XP computer). When I click on that server to see the hosted files, I get nothing. I know that files are hosted because I have a computer right next to this one that runs XP and I see the hosted files when I click on the server. Any ideas? Is there some kind of network setting in Vista that I am missing? I can access the server that the FileMaker Server is running on via the Network Neighborhood in Vista no problem.

Hi all, I've tried to install filemaker 9 server (trial version) on a machine running windows 2003 server standard edition (R2). installation was successfull (at least, it seems so..), service was properly started and configured. once installation ends I opened the browser (IE7 + JRE 6 as requested from the FMS installer) and a popup message promped out notifying me that Database service was not running. I clicked the option which should start that service but it kept to return the same error, as if the service was still not available, but it was running. Anyone experienced (and solved) the same problem? ;)

I've just installed a developer copy of FMS on an XP Home-SP2 box. The computer meets all the requirements except it has a 2.8Mhz processor instead of the 3.4 or so that is listed as the minimum (I figure I'm limited to 3 users anyway so hopefully it doesn't matter). I downloaded the installer using a different computer then moved it to the 'server'. When trying to run the installer, it would crash the OS. I tried downloading the installer directly from the FM site and have it save on the server. It still crashed the server. I then downloaded the installer setting it to Run rather than Save and this worked. (Evidence of a problem?) I moved 1 file to the server …

Okay, a bit of backstory then the question: We have a Quotation system here that customer services/sales uses to quote parts. We have 2 facilities: FLA and TEN. FLA likes TEN's FileMaker Quotes system, and wants a "COPY" of the system hosted on another server that they can edit at will. Additional forms/tables in the existing DB is not an acceptable option (for no apparent reason). Here's the question: let say there are 13 files associated with this system. Can I host that same set of files on two different FileMaker servers, with the same names and have all the links, etc. continue to funciton? -edit- These servers will be on the same domain on the …

Hey, We are using FileMaker Server 7 or 8 (don't remember) to serve FM7 files to other computers in our office via a little switchboard... We host our website on our own server at the office and filemaker database files are located on that "server"... When we use "open remote" to open our database, it brings up the box with the IP address of our server and we click out database... I was wondering if this is opening the file really "remotely", as in over the internet. It loads extremely slow! Shouldn't I be able to server the databases over the internal network? How do I choose to connect to filemaker internally? Sorry if this is a stupid questi…

In reading the "FileMaker Server Getting Started Guide", I noticed that the requirements went up significantly for FMS9 from 8.04. I have a question regarding the hard drive space. Think way back...I have a client with FMS 5.0 on an iMac, and they cannot open the Schedules window. They report a dialog that claimed that the Prefs file is corrupted. I have a network with about 8 users, and FileMaker Server on a Mac Mini. I'd like to get a small portion of this data to the web, but I seem to be out of luck. I can't share the data through a client, and I have Server, but not Advanced, so I can't do that either, right? If I were smaller or larger, I'd be all set, but I'm in the middle. I tried making a shell database with calculation fields just equalling the data in the shared files, but the calc fields show blank on the web. Any ideas? Do I have to either spend $700 or go back to a client running as server?

A client with a Donations-based solution shut down their dedicated Mini over the 4th. When they started it up again this morning, Server wouldn't open the file. Then I closed it and tried opening it again with Server and it worksed fine. Or at least seems to be working fine. Should I worry about the file? Why would opening it locally help here? Thanks, DJ

Hi friends, I have been dropped into FM admin position by way of last man standing. The company I work for is in need of a Filemaker Server (hardware). Our current Filemaker server is also our file server for the office and we would like to purchase some hardware to use only for Filemaker. We are serving about 14 databases with a total of 71 files (about 200 mg of data). There are about 5 users in this office (LAN), and 3 in an out-of-state office (WAN). Because of our modest needs we were considering a Apple Mini to use as a Filemaker server. But many people have stated that because of the poor disk drives in the Mini, it is a poor choice for a Filemaker server. An xserve or Mac Pro seem like such overkill for our needs. What kind of hardware are o…

Hello, I have a problem with FMP clients that get disconnected from FMS server. There are 7 clients running FMP 8.5 on Intel iMac's (OS X 10.4.9, 2.16 GHz, 1GB RAM) that get disconnected from the FMS (OS X Server 10.4.9, Intel XServe, 2 GHz, 1GB RAM) at random times during the day. Sometimes everyone gets disconnected at the same time. We have looked at several possible problem area's. The XServe is the only Apple server in a Windows network and the main server for a new communications department, running AFP, SMB, FTP access for third parties and Firewall enabled on the server. I'm trying to organize my hosted FM 5.5 files into subfolders. FM server should host everything in the FM server folder and one level of sub folders down. This is an inherited and poorly documented db and so I have limited info as to configuration changes. However, it seems that what I thought was the main FM server folder is itself already a sub folder as FM server will not open sub folders within that directory but it will open fp5 files. The problem is the directory in question appears to be the main directory but it also appears to be a partition on the server. How can I find out there FM server is looking for its main directory of folders to host? Or even chang…

I am an absolute beginner attempting to set up what seems to me to be the simplest of scenarios - one file, hosted by Server on my computer, accessible by two people. The file has all the right permissions, it's showing up nicely in Server Admin, and also in the FMPro Open Remote dialogue, but I can't open it because I get a License Key Conflict Error. I got all excited when I found this thread about License Key Conflicts, but unfortunately it doesn't help. Or maybe it should, I'm just too stupid/too new at this to understand it. As far as I can tell, the Server and the Open Remote are both using the same IP address - I understood from the other thread that i…

I need help configuring FM Server 8 to host databases on my Xserve. I'm using the xserve as a file server in an office of approx. 10 computers. The Xserve has a system hard drive and a 2 drive RAID 1. Our company data is stored on the RAID for back-up reasons. FM Server is installed on the system hard drive, but I would like to store the hosted databases on the RAID. I've created a database folder on the RAID and set it as the alternate directory in FM Server Admin. How do I correctly set the permissions for this folder and database files in Workgroup Manager, so that they can be accessed from the client machines? The documentation that came with the software does …

I'm looking to set up the 5.5 Server on a linux install. I've been running into issues because 5.5 is older and the newer linux kernels are too new. Does anyone have a recommendation for a kernel version that will work with server? Currently I've tried fedora as redhat was the recommended linux version. Thanks.

Hi all, I'm running billing software that uses FM Server 5.5 running on Windows 2000 Professional. We had to reboot the machine and now FileMaker Server 5.5 won't run anymore. When I reboot and check the services, I see that FileMaker is stopping. When I try and restart it I get the following message: "The FileMaker Server service terminated with server-specific error 50" The only mention I've found so far with FileMaker and error 50 indicates that it is a problem with something called Web Companion which we don't have installed. Has anyone else run into this? Thanks

I set up Server 8 on an XP box and I have many PC clients (with FMP8.5) and one mac laptop (with FMP7). The PC clients connect and work great with the server. However, the mac client doesn't show anything in the list when I click "Open Remote..." and it gives me a not found error when I type in the path manually. Why won't my server talk to my mac?

Quite recently I heard that FMS 5.5 on a computer with multiple processors/dual core/hyperthreading might be a bad idea. That this might cause unknown/weird problems. Is this a known fact? Why would it cause a problem if that is so? I personally have never run into any trouble that I could relate to such hardware with FMS 5.5, but I would appreciate any answer related to this. Thanks!

I'm trying to get FileMaker Server 8.0v4, under OS X 10.4.9, to do backups of my database files to a mounted, encrypted disk image. It seems like everything is set up properly, but I'm not getting it to recognize the backup folder as a valid path. Here's what I've done: 1. created an encrypted disk image 2. mounted the image 3. unchecked "ignore permissions on this volume" (get info on the disk image drive icon) 4. set the entire backup path's permissions to be read+write by group fmsadmin. 5. Entered the correct path in the backup schedule (tried both filemac:/diskName/foldername, and filemac:/Volumes/diskName/foldername ) 6. un-mounted and re-mounted …

Just a questions as to how long you should wait before "force quitting" a FileMaker Server. I have FileMaker Server 5.5 running on a Mac and I have issued the "Stop Server" command but it is still stating - "FileMaker Server is stopping...This may take several minutes". This has been going on for about 1.5 hours. Should I wait or just "force quit"? Before issuing the stop server command I logged into the admin interface and there were no open connections to any databases? Is there somewhere else I need to check for database activity? Any help would be greatly appericiated. Thanks

Two questions to follow this up if I may... 1) How do I stop a FileMaker Server from doing so if I set it up to do so initially, as I can't find this in the FMS preferences or settings. 2) Where can I read more about this or the post? or could someone explain why its bad practice to do so. Thanks

Hi We are running FMS7.04 on an OSX 10.3.9 server with a dual IP address, so that we can access databases from the 2 networks that we we are using. We are a dual platform school running OSX 10.3.9 and Windows XP on the clients. When we go to open a remote file from the Macs it gives us the correct IP address for the server in the 'Hosts' window, however on the pc's it gives us the IP address of the other subnet, and we cannot access the files. I know that I can add the sever with the correct IP address to my favorites, but we have approx 1200 pupils who will need to do this, and I want to make it as simple as possible. Is there any way that I can set the default …

Our product works fine in client server mode until the number of records grows. The core of our application uses 3 Filemaker files; Contacts, Units and Deals. A Deal brings together a Contact and a Unit. There are fairly complex scripts involved, there is some sorting, some finding and on the Contacts and Unit detail screens each has a portal with a list of Contacts and Units, respectively. The numbers of records are rally not that large. For example: Units 6,600 Contacts 7,607 Deals 6432 There are delays transitioning under script control from: Deal to Contacts 6.5 seconds Contact to Deal 4 seconds Deal to Unit 5 seconds …

Does anyone have any experience with creating a Windows batch file that could close all databases. Basically, I would like this batch file to execute when there is a power failure and the system goes on battery backup. I can create the batch file, but my real interest is in issuing the command for the databases to shutdown, without having to do it from the FMS Server Admin or in servises. I was interested in finding one that is already in use. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks, Ron

Attempting to set up SSL to work with Filemaker web hosting. Trying to figure out if Filemaker uses Apache to host it's webpages or not. Anyone know? The filemaker site knowledge base and the help in filemaker don't really say much other than a brief section on how to configure SSL to work with ISS (which suggests Filemaker does not use Apache).

Has anyone had any problems with FMP Server 8 V1 shutting down? I host a database with 10 files and have had no problem for 6 months until a week ago. Now, the server, which is on Windows XP, is down every morning when I come to work. Additionally, one of the files would not open. I condensed the file and it opens find now but I'm concerned that the server problem will corrupt the files eventually. It may be the computer but it's not used for anything else.it's new and has been no problem until now. Thanks for any insight you may have.

I've been pulling my hair out for weeks over this one and I'm hoping that someone might offer some insight as to what the problem is. I'm running FMS 8 on a Mac G4 (DP 1GHz) with OS 10.4 Server. I'm also running Retrospect Workgroup 6.1 for client and server backups. Please note that I an NOT using Retrospect to backup FM files that are being served, as FM Server does that. A few weeks ago I started getting peculiar and intermittent behavior on the server when Retrospect does its nightly client backups. I get error 519 (network communication failed) when backing up client machines. After the "failure" the server displays some very odd behavior, as follows: …

Windows 2003, FM server 8.0v4. I have run into this issue several times now and I can't figure it out. Here are the symptoms. Hi, im running fms 5.5 on a Win XP Pro box. The databases displayed within the hosts menu from time to time disappear. I can still access the databases if i specify the IP address...although i dont want my users having to do this each time the dbs drop off the host menu. This problem started when some of the users started to use wireless. Im wondering if this is causing the problem? If i close all dbs and restart the Filemaker server services the dbs are then shown again within the hosts menu. The users are using FMPro 6 Has anyone experienced this issue before? Thanks.

Hi, Im getting all muddled. Ive got what seems to be quite a complex database, using some advanced functionality, which doesnt work properly on IWP. I was going to suggest using local clients to remotly access the data (there are 3 sites, 1 would access a local server) BUT some1 told me that doing this is slower than using IWP (apparently thats why IWP exists?). has any1 done this? can anyone validate this either way? I could really use any help, as otherwise i might have to look at some way of syncing 3 separate files! (eek/ cry) thanks in advance!

FMSA 8.0v4. I use two critical files - SecureFM Menu Table and our main file (Business.fp7) that both reside in /databases. I have watched the databases open (from Admin) and Business.fp7 opens first before SecureFM Menu Table.fp7. The databases appear to always open in alpha order. We have had no problems with this before now. At 7:00 AM yesterday morning, I was replacing the files on the server. I had, of course, turned off services. As I turned on the services, an early-bird User logged on. It opened Business.fp7 but didn't open SecureFM. It opened on the null layout. Our menus were unlocked and exposed and all of the critical features of SecureFM were dead in …
