Portals

In a portal, each row has a button. This button pops-up a larger window of that same portal row. The problem is, if the user has started typing something in the portal, then runs out of space and so without committing the changes clicks the zoom button to get to a larger view of that record ... ... we have a conflict, because the record is being edited from two different windows. If we use the commit function before calling the popup window then the "go to related record" step is lost. Is there an elegant way to commit before going to a related record ? (right now I have to do some trickery with having both windows and then bringing the previous wind…

I'm sure this must be simple, but I can't figure it out and am going a bit crazy! I have a portal that shows records from a self-join relationship. I want to devise a calculation that automatically highlights the current record in the portal list. I don't want to use a script to do this. Can anyone help? Thanks

The event management template in filemaker allows to add guests in the portal that shows up in the events layout. When clicking on a row in the portal showing related records from the guests table, it takes me to a layout to add guests. This is perfectly fine if attendees for a conference are different all the time. I am trying to modify the template so that I can track the attendance of a set of people in the guest list I already have added in the database before creating an event. Tracking attendance for the people in the guest list should be as easy as checking off checkboxes rather than entering attendee details every time. How do I get this functional…

I have a calender that is represented via portals to days, with initial row offsets to get the month's correct days. Now within each day may be any number of todo items. these items are represented via a portal. so we have a portal within a portal. i have done portal filtering before. but this is on quite a large scale and i would like to get some input before continuing. below is the layout and below that the realational diagram. as u can see all days have the two todo tasks. which are actually from different days. I have a lecture tracking database & I'm trying to figure out if I can send an email that contains data that's displaying in a portal. There are 5 lectures that occur each Thursday. I have a layout that displays the lecture date with a portal that displays the 5 lectures for that date. I'd like to be able to generate an email that has the date, then lists the 5 lectures for that date. Is there any way to do this? Each lecture also displays as an individual record in a different layout--I thought I could generate the email using that layout with a script that first finds the desired date (found set contains the 5 records for that date) but I can't figure…

Hello All - FM9: trying to shrink a portal so it shows no empty lines on a printout. FM Help says: Portals slide like any other non-field object, but objects within a portal can't slide. If you specify that a portal slides up and the enclosing part shrink, FileMaker Pro omits empty portal rows. - But it doesn't seem to work at all. Any help or suggestions very welcome. I hope I can describe this issue accurately! Every year we use IWP to gather data within our organization. When the user logs on he/she sees their user information and a portal that contains the current years issues (unless none of been added). I have added a feature so that the users can looks at issues they have submitted in prior years with the same idea--their user info and a portal that looks at our archive. My relationships appear to look correct. On my desktop in FM PRO ADV 8.5 it looks great and as advertised. However, when I use IWP the to look at the layout with archive portal the portal is blank. I'm trying to get a portal to show data from a related table, but no luck. DB is attached (bowling info). The layout is "Team Info 2". Might as well put it up front, I'm a rank amateur. Sorry if this question has already been asked. I've created a portal that displays related records from a table. Although I have changed the relationship to allow 'creation of related records' it still isn't letting me create them. A row is generated, but I can't enter data in it. I want to be able to enter the first field in the portal record, put in a piece of data (one letter), and have it insert data from the related table across the portal record. I am TOTALLY baffled here! I have a forms db with a portal in a layout showing list of drivers. This portal WORKED FINE initially when I set it up several months ago. All of the sudden, it only shows the first record (portal=show 10 rows). So, I created new layout, copied and pasted the portal to the new layout, and it WORKS FINE. I RE-copied it to the original layout and it DOES NOT WORK! ARRRRRGH! What happened? Please explain the error of my ways...

How do you make the information displayed in a portal read only? I want to be able to let people look at related data in a portal but make them have go to the actual related record to edit it.

I have a layout in my db with multiple portals. I use the printing and sliding options to remove and slide up unwanted portals from the printed report. When previewing the layout all looks well, however when printing it the text areas, i.e. filed labels, from the non printed portals still show in the print out. Has anyone ese had this problem. I have the same issue in 8.5 and now i have tried 9 and get the same.

I have built a database that keeps track of students, courses, teachers, and enrollment. Both the courses database and the teacher database contain a field for which university they belong to. (We track about 15 different universities.) Within the Courses layout, I have a popup selection button for the teacher of the course that opens a layout with a portal listing all the teachers in the database. I would like to have the portal containing the teachers just show the teachers that teach at the university selected in the Course layout. Is it possible to constrain the portal field to just show the university specific teachers? Any idea?

Hello, I would like to add some portals to my database that is served IWP using FMSA 8.0 and have some questions: 1) Are portals compatible with IWP? 2) How do I make the row count dynamic? For instance, I have set in the layout that the portal should be 10 rows. But I was hoping that I could set it up if a user wanted to add more data that the portal could be dynamic. Is that possible? I am having problems printing layouts/documents with portal information in Filemaker 9. Portals with Sliding Printing set to move up used to behave perfectly running Filemaker 8.5 on several client applications. Using FM9 the print or pdf is a mess on the same documents. Portal rows are missing or only half print. Is this a known issue with FM9? Is it being addressed by FMI? Has anyone else seen the same problem or come up with a solution?

For some reason a "Go to Object" script step when the object is a named portal does not execute. I can move to other objects on the layout, i.e. tabs. What am I missing? Thanks for any help

Hello. I have several portals on a tab layout in my current project. I was hoping there was a way for the "new" row to appear at the top. I set the relationship between the layout's defined table and the portal's defined table to allow creation of new records in the portal's defined table. The blank record where I can enter new data is at the bottom. How can I make it at the top?

Is it possible? In the main table there is a portal to create various sub-categories. The key field is the ID number of the main table. I need to be able to create n-quantity of extra expenses that will be attached to subcategories. For this I made an expenses table and related it to the sub-category table through the same main table ID - and through a sub-category ID. David Kachel in his White Papers (which are quite good I might add) has a technique for editting portal records outside of doing it in the portal by "create an additional relationship to the table in question. Make it a one-to-one relationship using a global field as the Primary key and the existing ID of the related record as the foreign key. Hi, I have a portal with a button on each row (each row is a button with text in front of it - so clicking anywhere on the portal row triggers the button). When the user clicks the button, detailed information about that record gets loaded onto the screen into some global fields, which can then be edited and resaved etc. This sets the scroll-bar on the portal back to the top, which I dont want. I unchecked the "Reset Scroll Bar When Exiting Record" box but no change. Is there anyway to make the portal stay where it is? Or failing that can I script a "goto" action that will go to a certail record on a screen refresh? Thanks in advance, Nick

I have a portal list of over 4,000 records and I would like to put in the ability to jump to the beginning of a letter with a script. Is there a semi-easy way to do this. I can think of a way by sorting the records counting how many before a letter and how many after a letter and then subtracting and then going to the portal row number from a calc. But this would mean a lot of scripts and possibly a slow script. jon

I have an 'invoices' table that contains a portal showing 'extras' that are in a related table ("Extras ID = Invoices ID") but different (remote) fm8.5 file. All the 'extras items' show up as expected in the portal. However, I need the portal to show only the unpaid 'extras items' for each client. Hi, I have a portal set up with 6 rows. "Show vertical scroll bar" is checked, but no scroll bar appears. The weird thing is, I accidentally discovered that the scroll bar really IS there, it is just invisible. If I click where the scroll buttons should be, it scrolls up and down the same as if there was a bar there. In somewhat unrelated matter, the number of related records viewed in the portal isn't always the same. Hey! Just had a quick question above filtering portal content... I have a "case" page that needs to display data from a "contacts" table... the "case" table and the "contacts" table are linked via a joining table that contains simply a "case_ID" and a "contact_ID". The trouble is, is that there are many types of "contacts". A user needs to be able to look at the "case" page and see all the different types of related contacts in their own sections. I think what I want is a self join relationship displaying information in a portal. I have a very simple database of committee members that I want to do one specific thing with. As I complete a record, one of the fields is "Committee Membership" and it indicates with committe the person is a member of. There are about 20 committees each with about 20-30 members. I would like to add a portal that shows all the other members of the committee when you are looking at a persons record. Ideally, i'd even like to be able to click one of the other members to go directly to their record to view detailed info. Is a portal the right tool? Thanks!!

Our database has a portal displaying, among other things, a container field which holds images. This portal operates perfectly in FMP 8.5. However, the portal is not operational in FMP 9....no field content is displayed. Furthermore, when viewing the database relationships and fields, the container field is grayed out in FMP 9. If the database is viewed in FMP 8.5, everything works fine. Any ideas?

Newbie question: I'm developing a solution for kids to track the environmental effects of certain waste items. Each item will have many "choices": recycle, send to landfill, etc. Each choice will have many impacts: energy, water, mineral resources, etc. Please see attached PDF. Ideally, I'd like to enter in all this information in one layout: the waste item, it's choices for disposal, and each choices' many impacts. I've been successful in using a basic portal for entering in an item's many choices but not attaching the many impacts to each single choice. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! I have a database that manages all my clients plus all projects plus other items. On the home page I have a portal that is currently showing me all active projects. There is a relationship in the home db in s field called gStatus to the project field called status. I'd like to create a second portal on the home layout that can show me all pending projects. I have a db that uses a series of hierarchical portals (or filtered portals). The portals are different tables and they relate to table called CS (Content Standard). The hierarchy works fine. It goes through Grade, Subject, Area, Topic, Subtopic, Benchmark, and Benchmark Component. The CS T.O. is related to a T.O. (based on a separate table) called "People." Now that I'm almost finished I can tell you what a stupid job I'm doing here. I do catalogue descriptions in both French and Dutch. Some of those descriptions (e.g. for jewelry) contain often the same words and parts of a sentence. I thought I might click them from a portal in stead of typing them over and over again or copy and adapt them. I came up with a tabel containing (for the moment) nine records with each 12 fields. Hello, We have a portal that could have any number or rows so we won't know if there are 3 portals row or 10. The thing is that we want a tab within our portal, is this possible. I have a global Field for the relationship and i have a field in the target file that has all of the keywords for the entries seperated by a return (they are on seperate lines.) What I want to do is enter more words in the Global field and have it Narrow the entries intead of expand. Right now if I enter "Lobster" and a return and then "Johnson" it finds both "...Dave Johnson...","...Devil Lobster..." and "...Lobster Johnson..." when I want it to only bring up "Lobster Johnson" in the Portal. Hi, I am pretty new to Filemaker and I am programing a database to store my to-dos and appointments. I have one table that stores the To-dos, one table that stores the work times that I have to do the tasks, and a 3rd table that combines them so that I can have a many to many relationship. I also have a table that holds appointments and a table for the calendar. I would like to be able to show all of the appointments and worktimes (with included tasks) in one portal (or at least in the correct order sorted by time of day) on the layout for my calendar table. I have a database where the go to related record work on one layout and not the other. It works in a T.O. relationship between Organization and Individual (a one to many relationship in my case). In the Organization layout I have a portal with all the employees of that organization. A button within the portal takes be to that particular employee's record in the Individual layout. Next Transaction Record problem..... As a point of reference , I posted yesterday in regards to a portal/script interaction..... http://www.fmforums.com/forum/showtopic.php?tid/188361/post/258169/hl//fromsearch/1/#258169 ....and the response yielded a fix to my problem. YES! But now a new issue. Even though there are no records in the table the portal refers to, there is a "default entry" that shows up in the portal, which I do not want there. Hope I am in the right for this question... I am using a portal for navigation. I have looked at all the examples I can find on how to highlight the portal row. The portal is not a selfjoin as most of the cases i have seen. The portal is populated from a table called catagory. i have the field acting as buttons that run a find script in the layout that the portal is on. all works well. Now i would like the row to stay highlighted after the script is run. all of the examples i have found relate to portals from a selfjoin. Any Ideas? I have produced a portal containing many container fields which, thanks to other peoples help, works well. I would like to expand this by being able to click on a container object, such as a picture, and have information about the picture displayed in another text box. I tried to create a field in my table called "info" but this just puts up the text for the first picture and does not change when selecting another.

I'm starting to use FMP again after a long absence, so I'm a not a newbie, but I am rusty, and new to FMP 8.5. Anyway, I have a problem with a script I'm writing to automatically enter a value into a field in a portal. It's a bit bizarre because the script works as long as I click outside the portal after each use. But if I continue to click (and create) new related records in the portal one after another, the script fails (and some strange FMP behavioir occurs). Hi, hope somebody can help. Here's a simple example of my problem/question. I have two portals on one layout. The main layout is Employee Name. Portal 1 is a TO DO list and Portal 2 is a DONE list. I have a "Done" button in each portal row of the TO DO list and when you click it, it should send the TO DO item to the DONE portal and delete it from the TO DO list. Likewise, there is a "Back" button in the DONE list which sends that data back to the TO DO list and removes it from the DONE list. I can't figure out how to set up the relationships to make it work. I have a customer table, and a Film table. for every customer i have 1 portal with up to 15 rows. Inside the portal i have a field called "need films" and when i click on the email icon it send an email to our art dep, and it puts an "R" in need films. R stands for request. Now not all rows need films, but what i want is to be able to get the total number of "R" per customer and send that number to my home page that displays all my customers. But i can't do it. I am using the filtered selection portal technique discussed in the book: Special Edition Using FileMaker Pro 8. (I wish I had the page numbers for you but the book is at work.)For the most part it works with minor but annoying problem. Three tables: Personnel, Positions and Assignments; the are hundreds of personnel and hundreds of positions. I bring them together on the Assignments table. I am designing a "Call Intake" form to gather information for our Sales department. They want to track, among many other things, what types of calls are being fielded. A call can be a "Catalog" call AND/OR a "Contact Info." call AND/OR a "General Info" call AND/OR an "Order" call. I put a portal on the Call Intake form that allows the user to set one or more "Call Types" for each call by choosing from a drop down list of possible choices. I am trying to do a calcuation that would be equivilent to an if; then statement If number field A is less than or equal to 0, than the calculation field remains as a fixed number (Field but if number field A is greater than 0 than the calculation should take place which is (Field B + Field C) I have only been able to get filemaker to do one or the other calculations but not both. how do i do this? thanks! deborah I am very new to building databases!

Hi, As I click to scroll down in the Portal, the records at the bottom apprear to duplicate again and again as I scroll down until the scroll bar reaches the bottom, but they are not really there in the Table. If I go back to the top and just pull the scroll bar to the bottom they appear fine. Why is the Portal scrolling this way. Hello I would like to create a button and script that will create new records within a portal. However, I do not want the script to actually go to the portal table's layout to create the record, then go back to the initial layout. Is there any way to create the new record in the portal and stay on the same layout? PS: I tried 'go to portal record' , then 'insert record'. This just adds the record to the overall layout's table, not the portal.

HI, I am trying to display the number of current record in total related records. For example, I have table Client and table Contact. In the layout Client I have portal Contact. Because the Contact table has too many fields, so on the portal I display only one record at a time. I need to show the total number of contact for the client, and also the current record is the 1, or 2 or 3 ... of the total contacts. So, I guess I need to have 2 fields in the Client table , one is current and the other is total. I tried to use function Count, but it does not work at all,maybe because I have not learnt enough. Hello I have 3 tables that I want to display on a form. The tables are related parent -> child -> child where the parent table is behind the form and the child tables are two portals. If I select a certain record in a pop-up menu field from the child table (in portal), how can I get the corresponding value to display in the child portal field next to it?

Is it better practice to traverse a portal of related records to change data within, or just to go to the related layout, find records, and traverse and change those records from beginning to end?

What I have is a layout form a table called “Main” this contains basic information about a person such as Name, Date Of Birth, Age etc. I have another layout called “Addresses” with a portal which contains address information. What I am attempting to do is create a layout to print containing all the information from the “Main” layout as well as a specific portal row from the “Address” layout. I have the layout to print in place, I just cant seem to figure out how to get the data from a specific portal row into the layout…right now it brings in the data from the first portal row and I need the data from the last portal row. …

I have a portal with about 8 fields and I want to be able to sort the columns by clicking one of the 8 column headers. I have tried to make the header a button and use the sort record function to no avail. What am I doing Wrong?

Can anyone point me to information about using a portal as the user interface? I am doing contract work for a consultant and he likes to have one table as the user interface. The only fields in the table are foreign keys and a primary key. All other data is displayed through a portal to a layout from that one table. I would like to know more about this method. FMP5 & FMP8 Adv, WinXP I have 3 files that represent a piece of a .fp5 database that I've replicated in another file in FMP8. What I really like about this (.fp5 file) is that, in the .fp5 file, when portal B has info in it and you select another subject from the pull down menu, portal B becomes cleared/blank and waits until you select another topic from portal A. In my FMP8 replication file, portal B retains info even after you select a new subject from the pull down menu and only updates with new info when you select the portal row button in Portal A. In my replication file, I want portal B to clear all its info when a new subject is selected. What makes po…

I have a portal behaving very oddly. When I create a new entry in the last row of the portal, then it automatically does a find (which results in an error). When I modify a current entry it does nothing (which is what I expect). I cannot figure out what is triggering the "Find" command. I cannot find any scripts attached to this portal nor the fields in use that would do this. Thanks ahead for any help.

I am semi-new at FileMaker. I have been charged with taking our customer database electronic and I have been able to model the layout of our paper system. We deal with prospects and their contacts and leave notes on the cards. I am interested in knowing if I can add a portal or some list to the right side of the card that lists all of the cards that are scheduled for today showing the following fields (Counselor, Prospect Name, Next Contact Date). Hi Gang, I have a portal which I have to sort by a Timestammps field. This field is automatically populutaed at some point by using the get(timestamp) function. Now when I look at the portal which should be sorted chronologically the dates are sorted like this: 6/8/2007 xx:xx AM 6/7/2007 xx:xx PM 6/2/2007 xx:xx AM 6/12/2007 xx:xx PM 6/1/2007 xx:xx AM (my system uses the American date format of mm/dd/yyyy) The 6/12 date should be first but it's next to the 6/1. I'm using a portal on an invoice layout to show the inventory items and their stock codes. The portal is set up to be filtered by matching strings: if you type a search string into a custom dialog and click search, it does a find, and puts the record id's of the found set into a global field as a new-line-separated list. The portal relationship is simply between the global field and the inventory table. Works great. I want to add another button besides "Search" : "Show All". I know how to make it execute a find that finds everything in the inventory and then shows it in the portal, but it's about a 5-second process to create the record id list. Is there any nea…

I am using a portal to create new records in a related field, however, each time I enter new data it only makes 2 records in the relating table and updates them with the last 2 I entered. It also erases the old records if I start a new record in the layout the protal is in and saves 2 new records based on the new primary key (auto serialized). I am publishing a database solution via IWP that consists of project tasks. Each project manager can edit their tasks within a portal to the tasks table. I haven't been able to re-produce the problem on my end, but I have print screens from the one user showing how the drop-down fields, and subsequently their values, remain static on the page, while everthing else moves as appropriate with left/right or up/down scrolling in edit moe=de. Has anyone else seen anything like this or know how I can alleviate it? Thanks in advance. P.S.The browser with the problem and mine without are both IE 6.

Is it possible to have a portal show all the records of a particular layout? I have a layout (Vans) with six records. The first five are particular vans and their seating capacity. The six record is labeled "Unassigned." Every person is automatically give the foreign key ID for the "Unassigned" van. I have one portal in the van layout that lists all those people and I have included buttons to change the foreign key and reassigning them to another van. So far so good. I have that up and running. I've got a portal that points to related rows via a simple foreign key in the child table. When I type in one of the portal's fields, the row "disappears" after I leave the field. I know the row I was typing in is supposed to stay there and add a new empty/insertion row at the end of the portal. But this is not occurring. If revisit the parent record, then I can see the proper number of rows in the portal -- so the new record was properly created in the database. But this requires me to flip to a different parent row and then back again. Could this somehow be related to new layouts for the child table? Hi Gang, I am stuck. I have a table which contains a field with "Status" for each entry. The "Status" could be things like "Active", "Submittted", "Completed". I created separate instances of this table to create separate portals which show the different statuses. The tables and the relationships all work fine, but the problem I am running into is when I create a new entry on the table, the newly created entry does NOT show up unless I change the status of an existing item. I have a portal that shows related pictures as thumbnails. Each record can have as few as 1 and as many as 30. I would like to see as many pictures at once as possible - My vertical space on the form is limited to 6 thumbnails, but I could easily have multiple columns of 6. Right now I have two portals next to each other the first one[no scrollbar] showing pic 1-6 and the second one [w/ scrollbar] 7 through [...] Since the pictures are sequential it would be nice to see all of them move up as you scroll down, instead of the first 6 showing all the time and 7 through [...] disappearing. Is there a way to have one portal that has two columns?

Hello, I'm having an issue with a portal that I'm using in my one database. What is happening is I have a portal that is used to display products from another table (invoicing database). The portal pulls all the data fields just fine (e.g. Prod name, color, weight, etc.) when using the PRODUCT SERIAL NUMBER (FMP generated) as the select/trigger field. What I need to happen is all this data to be pulled from the products table using another field instead, I want to use the PRODUCT ID field (not FMP generated) to pull all the products data field information (e.g. Prod name, color, weight, etc.). I have 5 tables: CDs, Songs, Contacts, CDSongs, CDSent CDs - list of CDs in library Songs - Song names Contacts - List of contacts CDSongs - Which songs are on which CDs CDSent - Which contacts got which CDs I've been asked to provide one report that lists the Names of the people that received CDs and the dates they were sent (CDSent) along with the songs they received. I'm guessing if I had a later edition of Filemaker this would be easier, but is there any way to do this with FM5? I want to have a button outside of the portal which will delete the last transaction on the portal. But when i make a script which highlights the previous transaction and then the delete portal row, it deletes the entire point of sale for that particular sale! Plz help.

I'm curious as to how others handle the creation, editting and deletion of portal records. I currently have a portal set up with an "Add" & "Delete" button in the row. The remainder of the row I have a button that brings up a new window so the user can edit that portal rows information. On the edit layout I have a Cancel and Save button. When the user clicks a portal row to edit I put the field information in global variables in case the user decides to cancel on the edit layout I can set the fields back to their original values. I am building a database for my cabinetshop. I have a columnar type layout that lists door sizes. To make the math easier to understand I have the dimension fields displayed with a graphic representation of the cabinet. This graphic + dimension is stored in a portal. If the cabinet has two doors a portal with a double door cabinet presents itself. If the cabinet has one door a portal with a single door cabinet presents itself. I would like to, however, have both portals show up at same spot on the layout (depending of course on which graphic is appropriate). Hi folks, I use an event-based script trigger to populate the next portal row with looked up or calculated data when data for a field on the previous portal row gets edited, provided that one first clicks outside the portal. But clicking outside of the portal to trigger a script isn't much easier than clicking a button to trigger the script. It would be nice to be able to tab out of the edited field (an action that now tabs me into the next portal row, which stays blank) and have the tabbing trigger population of the next portal row. Is this possible?
